2024 Cheating scandal Team Penske hit with penalties over Push to Pass use; O’Ward declared St. Petersburg winner How Team Penske took push-to-pass beyond the limit
Penske Perfect and Details Matter are two phrases often used in conjunction with the Penske organization. And when they can be used to dunk on Ferrucci, all the better.
Josef is a perfectionist. This is a combo of his highly competitive nature - which has been said about him from a young age - and the Penske Perfect motto which he has taken to heart. He is highly critical of himself - getting very down on himself if he makes a mistake and taking the blame for things not wholly under his control. But he tried to maintain a genial if slightly arrogant image in public. He slips sometimes - there have been a few angry Twitter interactions that he later apologized for and on occasion after a race, his temper will get the better of him and he'll say things he probably shouldn't.
He can be goofy as hell as seen on Bus Bros. Scott McLaughlin has brought this out of him since becoming teammates. Josef has said that Scott makes him feel more comfortable being his real self.
I would be remiss if I did not point out Josef's thighs. He is a specimen in general but those thighs should get special attention.
Fanfic Lore
Frequently paired with teammate Scott McLaughlin. As of 2024 there has been a cooling of their friendship as Josef pulls back to focus on racing/the championship.
Historically paired with Conor Daly. They raced together in karts and lower-series cars.

Watch Arrow's Stephen Amell Target the American Ninja Warrior Course
Stephen Amell has the Floating Steps in his sights in this exclusive sneak peek from the Arrow star’s run on the American Ninja Warrior course. The first-ever celebrity edition of American Ninja Warrior — airing Thursday, May 25 at 8/7c — kicks off NBC’s third annual night of Red Nose Day programming, which raises money and awareness to help children living in poverty in America and around the world.
“For me, the most nerve-racking moment was the very first obstacle,” Amell, who was coached by ANW vet Kacy Catanzaro, said in an NBC Q&A. “Ninjas make it look easy… [but] it isn’t!” And from there on, he said, “It’s all adrenaline!”
“People have always wanted to see Stephen on the show,” host Matt Iseman tells TVLine. “I’m an Arrow fan and when I first saw the Salmon Ladder in the Arrowcave, I thought, ‘This sonuvab–ch is a fan of Ninja Warrior!'”
Iceman says that many celebs in the past have expressed an interesting in braving the course but without cameras rolling, “because they didn’t want to be potentially embarrassed.” So when Amell — along with Erika Christensen (Parenthood), Derek Hough (World of Dance), Today cohost Natalie Morales, Olympic gold medalist Ashton Eaton, comedians Nikki Glaser and Jeff Dye, former Yankees slugger Nick Swisher and actress Mena Suvari — signed on for this charity edition (which features a “slightly modified” course), “They came out and just threw themselves into it, which I love!”
Throw themselves into it they did. Suvari “had a horrible fall, smashed her face” and yet forged ahead in the name of charity, Iseman shared. Christensen also surprised the host with her intensity (“She is a gamer!”), as did Dye (“He was really competitive, and athletic, too — but don’t tell him I said that!”).
Asked to survey his Ninja Warrior experience, Amell said, “When I can accomplish a goal, have a blast and raise money for an awesome cause at the same time? That’s a win right there.”

haikyuu!! + things they were doing on the internet when they were like... 12
a/n: is this also a call-out post for myself and a way to make fun of things i did? yes
Hinata: playing those free to play weird-ass games on y8.com when he’s not fighting over the computer with his sister
Kageyama: watching ‘top ten best sets in volleyball games with slow-motion’ again and again until his sister taught him how to use youtube
Tsukishima: writing long essays that he posts on facebook about how much twilight sucks and how much he hates it. definitely had a twilight phase
Yamaguchi: secretly writing twilight fanfiction and posting them on wattpad. he got pretty famous for them but he’ll never talk about it
Ennoshita: played Feeding Frenzy a lot. like, a Lot. this man was a literal god
Tanaka: MAKING PUNK/EMO EDITS OF HIS FAVORITE CELEBRITIES. his masterpiece was punk harry styles feat. 6 earrings and a neck tattoo
Nishinoya: watching american ninja warrior compilations but the ones with ‘eye of the tiger’ edited over them to make them extra awesome
Daichi: coming up with his own inspirational quotes that are kind of terrible like ‘even though i’ve been beaten down, i’ll always get back up’ and posting them on facebook thinking that he’ll inspire people somehow
Sugawara: watching ‘Hetalia Ep. 25 VIETSUB|SPN|ENG subtitles pt. 2/28′ on youtube. either that or ouran high school host club idk this guy had a phase
Asahi: taking a whole bunch of those ‘what your fashion says about you’ quizzes until he eventually made one himself as well as a polyvore account
Oikawa: reading and writing doctor who fanfiction before eventually getting into sherlock and supernatural. yes, he shipped destiel. yes, the destiel canon thing on november ruined him
Iwaizumi: he was really into looking up random animal videos like ‘tarantula vs. scorpion fight’ and stuff like monster bug wars from animal planet and when oikawa made fun of his search history he figured out how to delete it
Hanamaki: vibing to the Phineas and Ferb songs playlist that he made on youtube (of course the aglet song is his favorite one)
Matsukawa: a true tumblr child and was there when this hellsite was first birthed. he remembers the tumblr wars between the fandom and the hipster blogs all too well
Ushijima: didn’t know what the internet was until tendou realized he didn’t have a skype so he made an account for him. until now, ushijima’s status still says ‘hi, wakatoshi here’
Tendou: watching a whole bunch of minecraft song parodies on youtube before eventually making them himself
Semi: either learning guitar through youtube videos or looking up ‘how to play lucky by jason mraz EASY VERSION | NO BAR CHORDS’
Shirabu: he used only Google+ as his social media and wondered why he wasn’t getting any friends
Goshiki: this kid was blessed to be twelve years old when the lego movie came out so he most definitely just used the internet to listen to ‘everything is awesome’ again and again
Kuroo: definitely a fandom kid, one of those from the six major book fandoms (hp, pjo, hg). used to run a fricking roleplay group on tumblr and his oc’s always have a Dark Backstory
Kenma: youguysaregonnacomeformebut--- SONIC THE HEDGEHOG FANFICTION OKAY BYE
Yaku: playing Pet Society on facebook. is it such a coincidence to see him so decked out and rich now when his pet had the same lifestyle? nO
Lev: playing those papa louie games (papa’s pizzeria, papa’s burgeria, etc) and trying to force the game to crash by serving customers 500 chicken wings
Bokuto: as soon as he got a skype account, he’d pretty much voice call anyone and everyone he saw had an ‘active’ status on but his friends didn’t have the heart to switch their status to ‘inactive’
Akaashi: was the king of making ‘which ___ character would be into you (for girls and gays only!!!)’ quizzes that are very detailed. he’d even make a whole character profile with a ‘how you met them’ at the end
Atsumu: used to secretly watch episodes of ‘boys over flowers’ and ‘meteor garden’ on the computer when he was alone at home. eventually got into girl’s generation and super junior
Osamu: a master at playing poptropica and even had a whole gig making poptropica walkthroughs for other people. sometimes he’d play club penguin and get himself kicked out for swearing just for fun
Suna: looking up ‘demons by imagine dragons with lyrics’ on youtube and just playing it on loop. his desktop wallpaper says ‘don’t get too close, it’s dark inside’
Kita: didn’t know what the internet was until suna and aran took pity on him and helped him create a facebook account. until now, his profile pic is still a picture of his jersey number and he has 99+ unchecked notifications
Sakusa: his cousin introduced him to sims. except, sakusa doesn’t play ‘for fun’ but to vicariously live the average salaryman life through his virtual character (he named him steve)

I Like to Watch | Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings
By Don Hall
Hearts and Minds
The United States posited a slew of reasons for invading and occupying Afghanistan. Some were justified, others were falsified. The reason given most often was the amorphous win their hearts and minds nonsense as if any country could be won over by occupation at home and ridicule from across the ocean.
Hearts and minds are not won over with force or material goods. Hearts and minds are won over with ideas and those ideas cannot be sledgehammered in but more subtly presented. Those ideas have to be normalized.
Back in 2008—clearly a big year for LGBT rights—the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation did a survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults 18 and older and found that two in 10 of them had changed their views of gays and lesbians in the previous five years to a more favorable one.
Their reasons? 34 percent said their views were influenced by seeing gay or lesbian characters on TV, and 29 percent said it was by a gay or lesbian character on film. Hollywood has been streaming LGBT characters into American homes for decades. The arc of inclusion may be long, and it bends towards pop culture.
Characters in comic books have advanced the conversation. Although independent comics lead the way with characters like Maggie and Hopey in Love and Rockets, for years the Comics Code Authority—and cultural attitudes—limited the role of LGBT characters in mainstream superhero titles. Over the last couple of decades, however, LGBT characters like the reimagined Batwoman and Green Lantern Alan Scott have made their way into comics, and both Marvel and DC have featured superhero storylines that featured same-sex marriage.
No question that this is a wonderful thing for those LGBT consumers—seeing someone like you on a big or small screen is important and valid. That, however, is not the most important part of greater and more diverse representation in pop culture. What increased exposure of those most marginalized does, more than anything else, is win the hearts and minds of the majority of Americans.
This is the same for black Americans. In recent years, we see more and more black men and women on our screens, in our Netflix queues, on television and Hulu. For millions of Americans (and not merely white Americans) this slow reminder of the humanity of black Americans de-stigmatizes and expands the reductive monolithing of 14% of our population away from stereotypes and into the homes of people far less likely to encounter blacks in their communities.
Contrary to the concept that America is fundamentally racist, I'd argue we are fundamentally segregated. The flyover states with the majority of Americans unexperienced in the multicultural experiment (Iowa, Kansas, Arizona, Maine, Nebraska, Utah, both Dakotas, Vermont—all of which have less than five percent of the entire state population who are black) are populated with people who watch movies and television.
These folks who have little contact with black Americans on a daily basis have representation in their theaters and homes every weekend and every night. They spend their money (but more crucially, their time) watching The Protege, Candyman, Summer of Soul, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions and All American, Insecure, The Chi, and The Equalizer. This is significant and, while foments often glacial changes in attitudes and mores, grows a deeper understanding and empathy with every viewing.
Which brings us to the MCU. Arguably a juggernaut built upon the successes of white male protagonists as the MCU has gained in worldwide popularity and influence so has Kevin Feige's commitment to expanding those cultural boundaries with increased inclusion. Black Panther is far from the best Marvel movie or even comic book movie in existence but it was a cultural moment that a major studio had never before created.
Sure, whole communities of black people buying out theaters so that black children could celebrate seeing heroes who looked like them was significant but more significant was that millions of white fanboys watched an all-black cast in a movie that included Afro-futurism and incredibly badass black women at its core play out in their backyards.
The Master of Kung Fu
Shang-Chi was created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Jim Starlin, debuting in Special Marvel Edition #15 in 1972. Created as a response to huge television success of Kung Fu, the character was originally known as the son of Fu Manchu and, when the rights to that character were denied, became the son of Xu Wenwu, the Mandarin. At one point, he was a part of Heroes for Hire which featured both Iron Fist and Luke Cage.
It is notable that the genius of Marvel is in connecting the past with the coming Phase 4 whether by intention or retroactively. The Ten Rings army was responsible for kidnapping Tony Stark way back in 2008. Jumping ahead to Iron Man 3 we meet Trevor Slattery, the fake Mandarin and then a Marvel One Shot that shows Slattery kidnapped from prison to meet Xu Wenwu. All in set-up for the latest MCU addition.
More like Thor than the typical origin film, Shang-Chi dumps right in the middle of things. The movie begins with the backstory of Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung)—narrated entirely in Mandarin Chinese by Jiang Li (Fala Chen)—and his possession of the ten rings. In the comic books the rings were on his fingers with each designated with a power. Now, they're more like martial arts practice rings, five on each arm and capable of pretty much anything the special effects team could come up.
Then we meet Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and his friend, Katy (Awkwafina). The two are a winning combination and, wonderfully, are not romantically involved. Parking cars by day, singing karaoke by night until, on a San Francisco bus, the Ten Rings gang (lead by a giant white dude with a laser sword for a right hand) attack him for a pendant left by his deceased mother.
Shang-Chi doesn't need those magical rings to completely kick ass—he is the Master of Kung Fu without them. The sequence is fun, fast, clean, and ends with Katy contributing to the graces of saving an entire bus load of citizens while Shang beats the shit out of the thugs.
And off we go. A Macau fighting club run by his sister that is like an underground MMA for magical beings. An escape on the side of a building fighting ninjas. Some flashbacks informing the secret city behind the trees where his mom came from and how Shang became the warrior he is at the hands of his father. A water map on the floor. Sir Ben Kingsley and a faceless furry with wings. More backstory. Two dragons. A showdown. An arrow. Two end credit scenes.
It's a fucking Marvel movie, after all.
The lengths the director (Destin Daniel Cretton) goes to find authenticity in everything from language, customs, and dress to be a fully realized Asian American film as well as a superhero ride is laudable. His treatment of Xu Wenwu is one more in a chain of villains who seem less villainess and more driven by sorrow or justifiable rage.
Early MCU baddies were nuts. The Red Skull (power hungry madman), Obadiah Stane (power hungry madman), Malekith (power hungry Dark Elf madman), Ronan (power hungry...you get the picture). More recently, the MCU is moving away from the Good vs. Evil narratives and presenting a more complicated version of opposing forces in the universe.
Thanos, while a genocidal monster, was still persuasive in some way. Not the insane, cackling lunatic one would naturally associate with villainy but a being with a sense of purpose who does not see himself to be the bad guy. Kilmonger from Black Panther is the same—his rage is justified and only his means are nefarious. Xu Wenwu is less an evil warlord and more a grieving widower weary of conquest and unable to connect with his children.
Making even the master criminal relatable while simultaneously rooting for the hero is no small feat. It demonstrates a complexity of thought and perspective one would not expect from superhero movies and represents opportunities for the discussion of who our bad guys are in the non-cinematic world.
Combining that sophistication with an increasing diversity in who are the heroes—black, Asian, Latina—makes everyone relatable.
That's the crux of the foothold pop culture has on change. Make everyone relatable and even the kid in Kansas who has only known the two Korean kids in his class can find purchase of the magnificent multicultural country we continue to forge.

You know what would be great? Seeing Chris in American Ninja Warrior... I'd love to see how far he'd go
My husband and I were talking about this recently! Not specifically about Chris, but that we’d love to see a celebrity edition of the show. I think it would be so fun! 🦎

The Hosts of Ultimate Beastmaster, Episode 1
So over on Netflix is a cool obstacle course show that needs more attention. Like American/Ninja Warrior? This is better. First, because the course is designed like a giant beast
Second, because competitors can touch the water and continue--water-related disqualification only happens if all four limbs touch. I remain FOREVER BITTER that American Ninja Warrior disqualified a woman because her freaking ponytail touched the water.
Third--and this is the most important reason--there are six sets of hosts from the different competing countries and they all interact with each other. Sometimes we just get a shot of all reacting (also please notice that TERRY CREWS is one of the American hosts and he is the best)
and we [American show] frequently cut to other commentators
But they also literally go into each other’s booths! Like when South Korea brought one of their competitors into Germany’s booth with the German competitor...
More under the cut because IT ONLY GETS BETTER (also, very mild spoiler for the end of episode 1) (Link for mobile)
(Edit://read-more links aren’t working on mobile apparently. Beware. I’ve tagged this as “long post” if you want to be able to avoid it for now.)
They root against each other, which is doubly funny when you realize they can all hear each other
No, seriously. Germany starts a chant...
And at the other end host line, Mexico attempts to chant over them
AND THEN THEY ALL GET TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE WITH WHATEVER ATHLETE WINS
(Side note: Korea likes to dance and I love it)
I was just going to put a few images from the other episodes to show how great it is, but the hosts are so hilarious I ended up with like sixty images so clearly I need another post.
#ultimate beastmaster#like the first episode starts with just a bit of this cross-interaction and then in later episodes it ratchets up SO MUCH MORE#reviews#kinda#long post

Honestly, I can so see Dick Grayson on American Ninja Warrior
Okay, hear me out
Maybe they're having this celebrity edition and they invite Bruce Wayne -who politely declined and gives it to Dick- who is so happy "My life has been complete!", so he goes on the show and everyone is like "that's not Bruce Wayne" but they don't really care because Dick is nice to look at with his shirt off, and Dick is wearing a Batman mask he got from Party City and he does silly dances every time he finishes a level and he just completely dominates the course
And at home Jason is just upset because Dick did not fall in the water, Tim is holding up a sign with Dick's name and shouting technics he could use even though Dick can't hear him, Damian is just confused on why people would make a tv show about something that's so easy to accomplish, and Bruce is just glad it wasn't him.

Fall Fusion 2020 (NBC)
Normally during this time of year, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and The CW get ready to unveil their primetime rosters. However, this year will be much different, due to the uncertainty surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic. Virtually all Hollywood productions are currently shut down until it can be determined that they are safe to reopen. As a consequence, most of the fall pilots weren’t able to be completed in time for network executives to screen them ahead of constructing the 2020-21 network television season.
Although the networks will still be doing “upfronts” in May, they won’t be live...and, more pointedly, they will probably be more tentative when it comes to potential calendar dates. After all, we won’t know when series are ready to have their exact premiere dates green-lit until we have a more concrete timeline of when they can go back into production.
While many writing rooms have been able to operate and interact – in preparation for next season – remotely, the on-set production cannot resume until safety precautions are developed. Presumably, these protocols will involve: medical screening and constant testing for all cast and crew members; appropriate sanitization regimes to keep the sets clean; and creative ways to mitigate risk (such as more closed sets, “bottle episodes,” and tapings where studio audiences are absent).
The “bubble shows” for this season are probably more likely to return than they would have been in past traditional seasons, just because they are familiar commodities with infrastructure already in place...and there is obviously a lack of completed pilots for new series that could replace them. These could-go-either-way series include: Zoe’s Extraordinary Playlist, Good Girls, Council of Dads, Lincoln Rhyme, Indebted, and Perfect Harmony on NBC; For Life, American Housewife, Emergence, Single Parents, Bless This Mess, Schooled, blackish, mixedish, and The Baker & The Beauty on ABC; All Rise, Bob Hearts Abishola, The Unicorn, Man with a Plan, Broke, Carol’s Second Act, Tommy, MacGyver, Magnum P.I., SEAL Team, and S.W.A.T. on CBS; Katy Keene on The CW; and The Moodys and Outmatched on Fox.
Some new programs have already received a straight-to-series order, whereas others could receive a blind pickup commitment based on their written premises. In addition, I wouldn’t be surprised if some shows are held over until later in 2021, just so the networks have a way to hedge their bets if there was a “second wave” of studio shutdowns due to hypothetical re-infections in late-2020 or early-2021.
Based on this unprecedented state of limbo Hollywood finds itself in, I am constructing a tentative “blueprint” for each broadcast network from the limited information we have. I have constructed their respective schedules in three hypothetical programming “waves” – November/December/January, February/March/April, and May/June/July.
Obviously, any productions are subject to further delay based on extenuating circumstances. Likewise, a series that receives a more limited order of 13, 16, or 18 episodes could see its episode order expanded, if filming circumstances grow more favorable and the specific show performs well upon its return.
(All times are Eastern/Pacific; subtract one hour for the Central/Mountain time zones)
(New shows highlighted in bold)
Featured network for today’s column…
Sunday
7:00 – NBC Sunday Night Football (late-2020) / The Wall (early-2021 through mid-2021)
8:00 – NBC Sunday Night Football (late-2020) / Little Big Shots (early-2021 through mid-2021)
9:00 – NBC Sunday Night Football (late-2020) / Manifest (early-2021 through mid-2021)
10:00 – NBC Sunday Night Football (November through January) / LaBrea (early-2021) / Good Girls (mid-2021)
Assuming that fall football continues as planned (albeit possibly without a stadium audience), The Wall could fill the 7pm hour beginning in January as counterprogramming to 60 Minutes. Following awards season, Little Big Shots would return in March, as a lead-in to the third season of Manifest. Rounding out the night would be the new time travel adventure, La Brea (replaced in the summer by Good Girls).
Monday
8:00 – The Voice (late-2020) / America's Got Talent (early-2021) / The Voice (mid-2021)
10:00 – Songland or Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector (late-2020) / Zoe's Extraordinary Playlist (early-2021 through mid-2021)
The Voice could return with a fall and spring edition, even if it has to adjust the format to emulate American Idol’s “at-home” version. Songland could also cobble together an autumn return. America’s Got Talent also has the potential to contribute a modified-format winter edition. Once scripted programming returns in full force, Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector might be ready as early as November or December, while Zoe’s Extraordinary Playlist would return in the spring for its sophomore season (fittingly scheduled right after The Voice).
Tuesday
8:00 – The Voice Results Show (late-2020) / Ellen's Game of Games (early-2021) / The Voice Results Show (mid-2021)
9:00 – Vagrant Queen (late-2020) / This is Us (early-2021 through mid-2021)
10:00 – The Purge (late-2020) / Ordinary Joe (early-2021) / Council of Dads (mid-2021)
For fall “filler” programming, recycled episodes of Vagrant Queen (from SyFy) and The Purge (from USA) -- both belonging to cable subsidiaries of NBC/Comcast -- could fill up Tuesdays along with The Voice’s “results show.”
By January or February, Ellen’s Game of Games would return in-between seasons of The Voice. The next 18-episode season of viewer favorite This is Us would probably run through May or June if it gets a later start; it could be followed up by a 13-episode run for Ordinary Joe, a high-concept alternate universe drama headlined by James Wolk (Zoo, Tell Me a Story). Then, Council of Dads can return for a sophomore season beginning in April or May.
Wednesday
8:00 – Hollywood Game Night or World of Dance or The Titan Games (late-2020) / Chicago Fire (early-2021 through mid-2021)
9:00 – Dateline NBC or World of Dance or The Titan Games (late-2020) / Chicago Med (early-2021 through mid-2021)
10:00 – Who Do You Think You Are? (late-2020) / Chicago P.D. (early-2021 through mid-2021)
For fall “filler” programming, Hollywood Game Night can be repurposed to film without a studio audience, if need be. A Wednesday edition of Dateline NBC plus the celebrity genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are? could also hold the night throughout October, November, and December. Another option would be a closed-set version of either World of Dance and/or The Titan Games.
After the new year, NBC’s successful roster of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago P.D. would presumably return for full seasons.
Thursday
8:00 – A.P. Bio (late-2020) / Superstore (early-2021 through mid-2021)
8:30 – A.P. Bio (late-2020) / Ted Danson-Tina Fey comedy (early-2021) / Young Rock (mid-2021)
9:00 – American Ninja Warrior (late-2020) / Brooklyn Nine-Nine (early-2021 through mid-2021)
9:30 – American Ninja Warrior (late-2020) / Night School (early-2021) / American Auto (mid-2021)
10:00 – American Ninja Warrior (late-2020) / New Amsterdam (early-2021 through mid-2021)
For fall “filler” programming, fresh episodes of A.P. Bio (resurrected by NBC’s Peacock streaming service) can fill the schedule, along with a modified fall edition of American Ninja Warrior.
By January or February, Thursday night comedies would return; Superstore and Brooklyn Nine-Nine can sandwich the as-of-yet-untitled Ted Danson / Tina Fey single-cam sitcom. Night School (based on the Kevin Hart comedy film of the same title) might function well in the post-Brooklyn time slot, and New Amsterdam could be the evening’s lead-out. Midseason replacement comedies could be Young Rock and American Auto.
Friday
8:00 – Making It (late-2020) / The Blacklist (early-2021 through mid-2021)
9:00 – Dateline NBC (late-2020) / Echo (early-2021) / Law & Order: Crimelords (mid-2021)
10:00 – Dateline NBC (late-2020) / Law & Order: SVU (early-2021 through mid-2021)
For fall “filler” programming, Making It could be nicely revamped into a quarantine-friendly format, followed by two hours of Dateline. Durable player The Blacklist would continue to lead off the night, lending action-packed support to time-travel drama Echo. The final hour of the night could go to Law & Order: SVU, which would also lend a cushion to the Christopher Meloni-led spinoff that ventures into the organized crime investigators of the L&O universe (preceding SVU once Echo finishes it’s 13-episode season).
Of course, new original series (including scripted programming) could be developed throughout the year and added to the schedule in piecemeal fashion. It’s just going to depend on how quickly location shoots and live studio audiences can be reintegrated into productions as commonplace, once again.
Until then, TV shows will have to find creative ways around that...or develop alternative types of programming.

Ever heard of American Ninja Warrior? It airs on NBC. Imagine Steve going on a celebrity edition of that show and running the course. Maybe with a few of the others (Sam, Nat, Bucky?) running it as well?
Steve had agreed becauseit was a celebrity charity edition of the show and he wasn’t about to turn downan opportunity to help someone in need.
He hadn’t realized thatRhodey was going to be his competition. He hadn’t realized how excitedhe was for it, either.
Sam and Natasha would becompeting against one another, and Bucky and Clint had decided that it was onlyfair they take one another on whiledodging projectiles from one another. Because heaven forbid there be a situation in which they aren’t tryingto one-up the other’s aim.
Steve finished the coursein record time (he was a little smug, supersoldier serum notwithstanding).
Steve knew a lot aboutRhodey. That he was patient and kind andhad rock-solid boundaries and was fearless. He had no idea that Rhodey was acomplete and utter badass when it came to American Ninja Warrior. He tiedSteve’s time. Without a serum. And he wasdefinitely older than Steve was. Kindof. Depending upon how you calculated.
Point being Rhodey schooled him. Steve refused to accept that they’dtied. He’d had the serum and Rhodey justhad his complete and utter incredible self. He declared Rhodey the winner and wouldn’t hear otherwise.
Steve didn’t even knowuntil they were filming the award segment that Sam had beat Natasha and thatBucky and Clint stalled out for three minutes throwing darts at one anotherbefore scrambling ass-over-tea-kettle for the end of the course and they were still waiting to determine who’d wonbased on a photo finish.

Let’s Offend Everybody!
There's a reason men have been the dominant gender for thousands of years. They're bigger and stronger than women. They're more athletic. They're more analytical. They're natural leaders and more assertive. These facts are undeniable, though the feminists try to tell us differently.
Bahahaha, okay, okay. If there were a #clickbait award, I'm sure I'd win. But I have your attention now, right? And the thing is, most of what I said is true… well, it used to be. And therein lies the problem. On average, men are taller and stronger than their female counterparts. And from something so small as higher testosterone levels, so many other assumptions have been allowed to develop. But those assumptions are being challenged more and more in the past couple of decades, especially in the past few years.
Let me be the first to say that I'm way out of my area of expertise when talking about gender psychology and sociology. I have almost zero formal education in those areas, but I do have education in how to do accurate research, which means I can prove the differences in men and women that I stated previously (if you're wondering, there are no definitive studies proving whether men or women are "smarter" because it's nearly impossible to separate capacity for learning and reasoning away from environmental factors, though men's brains are slightly larger than women's. Then again, sperm whale brains are five times larger than human brains, so…). The thing is, some of these facts are changing. For example, the perception of "athleticism" is different now that women have more freedom to step into the ring. And this was clearly demonstrated twice in this past season of American Ninja Warrior when women competitors went farther in an obstacle course than all other competitors, men included. And I think I was actually more excited for them than my wife was. I mean, the moments just kind of happened. Sure, okay, the skeptic in me could wonder if the competitors were stacked to favor the females, or maybe the shows flat out hid the truth through editing, but I don't think so. It really just felt like a few of these incredibly strong, agile, athletic women legitimately outcompeted the men in a straight-up competition without making a "thing" out of it.
But not all female empowerment on television feels so inspiring. There's something going on in Hollywood, and it's driving me nuts. I think it happens more in superhero moves (which I watch a ton of) because writers/directors are trying to appeal to a larger (female) audience. I call it the "girl power" moment. It's usually just one line, but it's almost always obvious, obtrusive, and obnoxious. And it happened in both movies I watched this weekend. In the first—X-Men: Dark Phoenix—Mystique glared at Professor X and said, "By the way, women are always saving the men around here. You might want to think about changing the name to X-Women." In the second—Men in Black: International—Agent M says to Agent O (both of whom are women), "The men in black?" O responds, "Don't. Don't start. I've had the conversation, and they don't seem to be able to let it go. It's a process. An attachment issue I think."
In Dark Phoenix, the line made me physically cringe. It seemed to come out of nowhere, and it totally weakened Mystique's argument. As I thought about it some, it made a little more sense considering the character's pain and frustration with what had just happened and with Professor X personally, but it still felt off. In the second movie (MIB), I had a gut reaction to the line because of how the Dark Phoenix line made me feel, but then I actually chuckled a little. It felt more organic. It fit the narrative better and added to the story without derailing it. It was still a clear "girl power" moment, and both movies did paint men as more corrupt and evil than women, but it didn't feel like as much of an agenda in MIB.
Like these movies, American society is exhaustingly polarized at the moment, and it seems like men don't have a voice in anything without having negative labels slapped on them. But as obnoxious as it is, it's probably necessary. Why? Because big changes require drastic measures. Women have been trying to subtly change the narrative for decades now--or maybe the ones in power have just made it seem subtle. I recently read this article about the WW2 Night Witches, and now I need a movie about them. But anyway, while things have changed considerably since WW2, men have still been allowed to perpetuate a lot of those antiquated thoughts and actions. But not anymore. Things have taken such a hard turn in recent years that men are dumbfounded. They're caught wondering what they can say (if anything) without offending every overly sensitive woman on the planet. And while a part of that might be because women are up in arms right now, most of it is because men are being forced to consider their words and actions for the first time while women have had to fight that uphill battle for centuries.
In case you didn't notice, I'm a man. And along with having two outspoken daughters, I'm married to a woman. And she's an awesome woman. In recent years, she's learned to stand up for herself and be who she wants to be. And who she wants to be is a stay-at-home mom and supportive wife. But she also wants to be a businesswoman, a fitness coach, and an inspiration to other women, amongst other things. She has so many passions and desires, and she's following them. And I love being able to witness and participate in that process. Do some of the self-help "empowerment" clichés she says give me pause? Yes. But I have my fair share of cliché comments and selfish moments. Her confidence is allowing me to notice my own failings, and while it's not always the easiest or most comfortable, we're both becoming better people through mutual growth and respect.
And here's my final thought on the whole thing: Like all revolutions, women's equality requires drastic measures to break down massive walls. Some people are going about it completely wrong (almost always for selfish reasons, like ratings and money), but so many more are doing things right. I have experienced some small measure of the gender bias that women have endured for so long, and the experience (after my initial pity party) has helped me appreciate the importance of equality, so even though a lot of the process makes me uncomfortable, I'll continue to support it. I am different from my wife. I am taller and physically stronger. But so what? She is better than me in so many ways. And instead of pretending she's not, I choose to celebrate her strengths. Because through those strengths, she completes me. We are all a part of the human race, and we were created to work together, to support each other, not to control or manipulate one another. If regaining that equilibrium means enduring a period of ugh-worthy, man-bashing movies, I'm cool with that. Because, in the end, He-Man was a thing, so I guess us dudes can’t have our cake and eat it too.

‘Celebrity Ninja Warrior’: 10 Photos of Stephen Amell in Action
The Red Nose Day Special is all about donating what you can to help children most in need, both here in the U.S. and in some of the poorest communities in the world. But this year, longtime admirers of Arrow star Stephen Amell are also getting something special: The chance to see him compete in Celebrity Ninja Warrior, which kicks off NBC’s evening of Red Nose Day programming. The actor, a longtime fan of American Ninja Warrior, tells Yahoo TV that tackling the course in real life was “surreal” — and a lot harder than it looks. “For me, the most nerve-racking moment was the very first obstacle,” he says. “Ninjas make it look easy… It isn’t!” Fortunately, Amell had a pretty helpful coach: ANW legend Kacy Catanzaro. “Her pointers were the difference between the run I had and flaming out super early,” he says.
Celebrity Ninja Warrior airs Thursday, May 25 at 8 p.m., followed by a special edition of Running Wild with Bear Grylls at 9 p.m. featuring Julia Roberts in Kenya. The Red Nose Day Special airs live at 10 p.m. on NBC.
