Maleficent Scars 

"There cannot be peace without first great suffering. The greater the suffering, the greater the peace. As mankind is drawn to his self-destruction like a moth to the candle, the so-called defenders of peace – the church, the government, the law – work tirelessly to save humanity from itself. But, by averting disaster, they serve to delay a peace that can only come through an inevitable baptism of fire.

The suffering I bring you is not the beginning of the end. It is the beginning of a greater mutual understanding through common suffering. It is the first step towards the ultimate brotherhood of man. The suffering I bring you is the bridge to ultimate peace.

Today, mankind has been handed the opportunity to escape his destiny, an otherwise inevitable conclusion to a thousand years of intolerance and fear.

I call all rationalists who can stand and join in the struggle against the radical theists, all of which fall beneath a common umbrella of ideology. If we were to continue any further we would reach mythology and Aesop's fables. When do we stop?

Any belief in a spirituality with no other proof, other than the cravings to project one's self over the rational thinking of the others must be eradicated as it does not only halt progression and development of the human mind and reach, but also hinders it.

Here I will emphasize clearly that the judgment upheld against us will be one of human hands, not of a god or other worldly being. Part of the absurd rational is what leads to the obscure justifications, the believers place upon their own disgraceful and belligerent behavior.

No. The loss of human life cannot and will not be justified. For this is not the taking of human lives. They are merely puppets, hollow shells that were once human beings. Brainwashed by stories and tales of old, their weak minds have been overpowered by the pressure placed on them by other lifeless puppets. And so, the cycle continues."

Those words were all that have echoed through 20 year old Grace Walker's mind as she attempted to fall asleep in the large bed. Less than 24 hours earlier, she had found out that her husband and CIA agent, August Walker, had attempted to eradicate 1/3 of the worlds population, using two nuclear bombs.

To say that she was shocked would be an understatement. Everything that her sister Julia and her ex husband Ethan Hunt had told her was right, he was a completely different person. He was not the person she fell in love with.

To her, Auggie was her whole world. He was warm, loving, comforting. He always spoke to her softly, with pure love in his voice. He did everything in his power to ensure her happiness and safety. He had bought them a house in Washington, which had the best security systems he could find. He had taught and trained her in hand to hand combat, and how to use a gun in self defence.  He had built her a vanity in their bathroom, a breakfast booth, and a floor - to - ceiling bookshelf in their living room. He had proposed to her on her birthday, in France, in front of the Eiffel Tower. They had adopted the sweetest dog ever, and American Akita named Kal, together.

To her, that was not the same man who the world was talking about. That was not the man who used the CIA, killed Hunley, and attempted to kill Ethan and her sister Julia.  She felt tears prick her eyes, as Kal cuddled closer to her in the bed. Grace rolled over, and wrapped an arm around him, and finally drifted off to sleep, Kal's hair tickling her cheek.

She was awoken at 3:42 am by the television across the room from her pinging, which alerted her that the front gates had been opened.  She shot up from bed, barely disturbing the large sleeping dog. She raced over to the closet and grabbed the gun that laid in a shoebox, in the locked safe.

' Back to the wall. Finger on the trigger. Small footsteps. Identify your target. Point and shoot.' August's voice echoed in her head. She descended the large staircase that lead into the kitchen. She heard the front door open, and slipped quickly from the kitchen, through the living room, and pressed her back to the wall next to the doorway that led to the entry way of the house.

The door to the living room opened, and Grace immediately cocked her gun, and pointed it at the tall, dark intruder.

"Who are you, and what do you want." Grace said, as she attempted to hide the fear in her voice.

The figure turned around, with their hands in the air. "Angel, it's just me." Grace was shocked to hear Augusts low voice.

She flicked on the light switch next to her head, and stumbled backwards. August was alive, but injured. He had burn tissue on his right side of his face. He also had a average sized scar on his forehead, that was stitched up, but still looked red and angry, like it had been done badly.

Grace dropped the gun, and jumped into his arms, as all thoughts about what he had done barely 48 hours ago left her mind.

"What the hell happened, Auggie?" She whispered into his shoulder. His hand came under her butt, and he lifted her up to wrap her legs around his waist. He walked over to the couch, and sat them down. He ran his fingers up and down her spine to calm her down. A few moments later, Grace lifted her head to look at August.

"Why did you do that, August?" August cringed inwardly at the use of his full name, which Grace only used when he was in trouble.

"I thought I was doing the right thing, baby. I realized as I was laying in a cave, hiding from Sloane, that I was on the wrong side. I realized nothing is worth leaving you alone. I realize if you can never forgive me for what I did, but I want to be better. I hope you can at least help me." he said in a truly sorrowful voice.

Grace stood up. "I don't think I can forgive you, at least not right now." She said, standing in front of him. August sat up straighter, and placed a shaking hand on the back of her thigh.

"I understand, baby, I do. I want to be better, but I need your help. Please," He said, a tear streaking down his face, and hitting the burn tissue. He cried out in pain, and Grace immediately looked down.

"Auggie, what is it?" She said, as he tried to wipe the tear, but just causing himself more pain. She noticed his pain, and helped him stand up. She led him into the kitchen and sat him on a bar stool.

Her sister Julia had taught her how to stitch up her own wounds when she was younger, a few months before she married Ethan. Both her sisters Julia and Melissa, as well as their mother wanted her to be a nurse like Julia, but Grace wanted to be an Early Childhood Educator . She had just finished college and was working in a daycare that she loved. But, she knew quite a bit about the medical field.

She brought out the professional first aid kit that bother her and Julia had received from their brother Rick a few years prior, and she always kept it stocked. She fished through it until she found burn ointment, and her stitching equipment. She sterilized her hands and put her gloves on, before turning to August. She put the burn ointment on his burn, and began to take out his badly sewn stitches.

"Jesus, Auggie, who stitched you up?" She asked, as he yelped while she pulled them out.

"I did," He said. "I tried to remember how you do it, but I couldn't remember clearly because of the pain. Are they bad?" He asked.

"I mean, they kept your face together so they're not horrible, but they could be better. I'll have to teach you how to do it properly." She whispered. "How much pain is the right side of your face in, on a scale of one to ten?" She asked, as she attempted to determine wether or not he needed professional burn treatment.

"It only hurts when liquid touches it. I managed to get out of the stream quick, and cleaned the remaining fuel off my face as soon as I could. Do you think it will scar?" He asked, as he gripped his leg.

"It probably will, a little. I don't think it will be bad though. You're still incredibly handsome to me," Grace whispered, attempting to make him smile. As much as she was angry with him, she still loved him, and wanted to protect him. He smiled up at her as she finished off the stitched, and bandaged his forehead.

She looked down at him, and pressed a small kiss to his lips, before she lowered her head to his shoulder. His arms came to rest around her waist.

"I know you're mad at me, but I love you with my whole heart, and will do anything to be better."

Grace lifted her head up, and looked in his eyes. "I know, and I love you too. I'm not as mad I would have been if you had gone through with it, but I'm still mad. I am willing to help you get better, because I know you are capable of getting better. Let's go to bed for now though, I'm sure Kal misses you too."

August stood up and followed her to their shared bedroom, not removing his hand from her waist.

As he laid in bed, with Grace in his arms, and Kal curled up at his feet, he knew he'd do anything to get better.

In moments of uncertainty, we often return to familiar touchstones. 

For me, one such anchor of comfort and clarity is the poetry of Langston Hughes, icon of the Harlem Renaissance. 

During recent weeks, I’ve found myself ruminating on Hughes’s Let America Be America Again, especially its astonishing opening stanzas. In these ten lines, Hughes evokes the power of the American promise, coupled with the pain of indignity and inequality. He speaks to the complex mix of rage and hope, of anxiety and optimism, that characterizes the black experience in America—and which I would argue has characterized the experience of many Americans at some point, white, brown, black, indigenous, and immigrant. Over the past year, it has become clear that the noxious swill of rage and anxiety remains as potent as ever. Regardless of which side of the US election each of us was on, we all find ourselves living with a public discourse that has become increasingly callous, contemptuous, and polarizing. So, as we launch ourselves into a new year, I find myself reflecting on where we go from here—how we counterbalance anger and hopelessness with radical hope and optimism, and how we create, in Hughes’s perfectly-chosen words, “that great strong land of love” and dignity for all.

Two reactions to our current moment

Hughes’s poem captures a tension I’ve noticed in many of my daily interactions over the past several weeks, in all kinds of settings and among all kinds of people, including myself: a tension between a sense that our times are dangerously unprecedented, and a sense that while dangerous, they are all too familiar.

On the one hand, many of us feel that the world has been turned upside down. To read the headlines is to see an unfamiliar landscape in which several unsettling trends have converged. The proliferation of fake news and the prevalence of brazen falsehoods on air and online are undermining faith in basic facts. The bourgeoning democratic institutions that captured the imagination of Alexis de Tocqueville nearly 200 years ago—our civil society, our free press, our universities—are increasingly beleaguered and besieged. Rising hate speech and violence across the country has rightfully frightened many people. All of this constitutes an assault on what we thought were well-established societal norms.

On the other hand, some of us look to history and recognize that our current moment is not without precedent. To me, one clear parallel is America’s post-Reconstruction era in the South, when some Americans worked to roll back and repeal the hard-won voting rights, educational, and economic opportunities that brought freedom and dignity to the lives of so many of their fellow citizens.

Indeed, racism, sexism, xenophobia, and all kinds of othering are not new. Identity politics has always been a part of American life. Our founding fathers codified identity politics into our earliest documents, valuing the voices and contributions of white men above all others: Women were denied the right to vote; enslaved African Americans counted as three-fifths of a person; indigenous peoples were exploited and marginalized. And throughout our history, waves of immigrants from Europe and elsewhere were initially met with suspicion and often discrimination. It’s important to remember that over the course of our long, messy march towards justice, women and men—not just our predecessors, but we, the people, of every generation—have endured prejudice and persecution. We have seen it with our own eyes, and lived it in our own lives.

I’ll never forget coming of age as a gay man in the 1980s—watching AIDS ravage our community as politicians stayed silent. I’ll never forget the brutality of Apartheid, and how our own American government condemned Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, and the freedom fighters seeking to end that unconscionable regime. I’ll never forget watching as the marches and protests unfolded in Ferguson in August of 2014, or standing with John Lewis on the Edmund Pettus Bridge a few months later, awestruck as he recounted the bloody Sunday in Selma fifty years earlier.

America’s rich and inspiring history has taught us that progress is not linear. As the dazzling Zadie Smith recently wrote, “progress is never permanent, will always be threatened, must be redoubled, restated, and reimagined if it is to survive.” So while these twin reactions—the sense that our moment is either unprecedented or has clear precedent —may seem at odds, they actually reaffirm a deeper understanding of the persistence of injustice in our world. They also remind us of the strength we must continue to find within ourselves to persevere and fight for our democratic institutions and ideals.

Confronting divisions, affirming dignity

Over the past three years, I’ve written about the ways inequality creates and exacerbates divisions. These include divisions of class, race, gender, identity, and ability, as well as differences in how we make sense of injustice in our lives.

There is no better illustration of this last category than the political binary of an election year, when our two-party system induces us to spend months defining our collective future in terms of us versus them, this stark choice versus that one. This rhetoric reinforces the notion of zero sum outcomes, and encourages us to believe that the gains of one happen at the expense of another.

We must resist this impulse. It is easy to lose sight of what we have in common, but the fact is that all of us share a fundamental human aspiration: to live in dignity. This is true no matter what we look like, where we live, how we worship, who we love, or what our abilities are. Whether by holding a decent-paying job, having agency in the decisions that affect us, or freely expressing our thoughts and creativity, we spend our lives in pursuit of dignity for ourselves and our families. Recognizing this universal quest for dignity is a prerequisite for any meaningful work toward social justice.

I am not suggesting that dignity is guaranteed. There are people and systems that seek to rob people of their innate dignity. They advance narratives that pit communities against one another—that permit some to falsely claim that the only way to ensure dignity for yourself is to strip it from others.

Of course, the dignity of one person does not preclude that of another. We can lift a poor Latina out of poverty and save a rural white man’s factory job. We can fight to protect black lives and the lives of the law enforcement officers who protect us. We can hold up a beacon of light for the “tempest-tost” refugees who seek safety and opportunity on our shores, and feel safe and secure in our neighborhoods and gathering places.

I’m not simply saying that we can do all of these things; I’m saying we must.

Our current context demands we question our assumptions and expand our understanding of who is vulnerable and excluded. If inequality fuels the fault lines of division, then our shared pursuit of dignity must help bridge the gaps. To borrow a phrase from the brilliant artist Lilla Watson, our liberation is bound up together.

The path forward: “America will be!”

It might be tempting to ignore or abandon the mutual obligation that ties us together, to embrace a kind of nihilism of indifference or, worse, to retreat into anxiety or rage. But we can choose a better path forward. With history as our guide, we can follow a path of hope—radical hope.

For Langston Hughes, born in 1902, the gap between America’s promise and its practices was wide. The great-grandchild of slaves on one side and slaveholders on the other—the child of educators and organizers—Hughes lived a life that demonstrated that the overwhelming fact of injustice does not obviate or relieve in any way our responsibility to act against it. He showed that a person can simultaneously feel righteous anger about the world and radical optimism for it. We must affirm the creed to which he gave voice, that the work of creating the America we envision requires optimism and resolve.

“America never was America to me,” Hughes wrote in the penultimate stanza of his masterpiece. “And yet I swear this oath—America will be!”

For as much progress as we have made, America has yet to fully live up to its promise and founding aspiration to be a nation of liberty, dignity, and justice for all. Yet this noble vision remains as profound as ever.

How The WaMu Brand Disrupted Banking

If you were born before 1990’s, chances are you will remember Washington Mutual bank (a.k.a. “WaMu”), especially if you were living in the western part of the United States. But the question isn’t so much if– but rather how you remember this bank.

A Dual Legacy

Unfortunately, most people will remember WaMu for its demise, its ending as the largest bank failure in American financial history. What started with risky sub-prime mortgage investments eventually triggered a credit down grade for the bank in September 2008, followed by a subsequent run on the bank and an overnight fire sale 10 days later to the highest bidder, JPMorgan Chase. It made global headlines. I’ll spare you the details because it has been covered many times before. But do think about it for a moment… A savings bank that grew and succeeded for more than 100 years, only to be defined and remembered by what happened in its final 10 days.

For me, this is not the legacy nor the lesson that I think is most memorable. (Besides, history has shown that we haven’t really learned much from it any way, but that’s a different story). What I think is most interesting is the brand angle of it all. As a branding professional I remember WaMu for the true pioneer that it was, the one that successfully disrupted an entire industry with a different, more human approach to banking.

Banking With A Smile

The premise of the WaMu brand was simple yet groundbreaking. They flipped the script of a traditional business model, aiming to change a rather stodgy, opulent and intimidating perception that is inherent to the industry.

WaMu was here to disrupt, wanting to be the bank for everyone – welcoming, friendly and a bit quirky. And their actions matched their words. Aside from being the first to offer free checking accounts without ATM fees, WaMu also lowered the barrier for people to engage at the branch level. Instead of the stuffy interiors and bullet proof glass counters with tellers in suits, the new WaMu branches featured modern, open floor plans with casually dressed associates that were welcoming and approachable.

This was known as the ‘Occasio’ retail concept, and the formula worked. In fact, the brand performed up until the very last month, consistently ranking highest in brand consideration for years – outperforming Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi Bank and pretty much any other competitor within its geographic footprint. How do I know? Well, I was there, leading the brand strategy team during the last 18 months, carefully monitoring our brand metrics along the way. And while my tenure was brief, it left me with a deeper [hindsight] perspective and appreciation for the strength of this brand.

Fertile Grounds For Disruption

Why was WaMu successful at disrupting a century-old industry? It’s not like they started from scratch, with a bright brand idea and a focused agile team that has little to lose. That’s the base premise and playbook of a startup. Instead, Washington Mutual was already a well-established brand in one of the oldest industries with a loyal following. Yet, they differentiated and disrupted in a meaningful way.

While I don’t claim to be an expert in organizational turn-around strategies, WaMu’s brand evolution did make me think about the conditions that need to exist for successful brand disruption. Looking back, I believe there are 7 critical elements.

1. A [Hidden] Gap In The Market. Arthur Schopenhauer once said: “The problem is not so much to see what nobody has yet seen, as to think what nobody has yet thought concerning that which everybody sees”. All banks have access to similar research, but they don’t all draw the same conclusion (let alone act on them). WaMu was the first to recognize and understand the prevailing consumer pain points. More importantly, they were bold enough to address them, appealing to a greater audience that was looking (craving) for a more human side of banking.

2. Courageous Leadership. This one probably goes without saying… Major change only happens if leadership believes in the idea. And with that I mean support from the CEO and President. The top leaders need to be on board – convinced, passionate and relentless in driving a compelling vision throughout every part of the organization. It all starts from the top.

3. Customer Experience. You can’t successfully disrupt through messaging and branding alone. It needs to be backed up with the product and experience. Apple’s messaging around simplicity wouldn’t have lasted this long if the store experience and product design were not aligned. The same is true for WaMu. Without the innovative branch design and free checking accounts it would have been an empty promise.

4. Culture Of Brand. The WaMu brand was built from the inside out. Everyone knew what the brand’s promise was and their role in keeping it. Employee training and touchpoints reinforced critical behaviors, reward and recognition systems were in place and everyone in the organization was empowered to ‘over-deliver’ on the promise.

5. Creative Excellence. Thanks to the creative minds at Wolff Olins and Chiat\Day\LA, WaMu’s advertising was aligned through unconventional creative that grabbed attention and reinforced the unique spirit of the bank. Positioned as banking with a smile, WaMu’s voice was informal and unconventional, using plain English (no jargon) and a sense of humor, effectively lowering the threshold to engage.

6. Brand Led Innovation. What surprised me the most as a newcomer to WaMu was how the entire organization looked to the brand for inspiration and guidance. Both product and experience were designed with the brand in mind. It was truly a brand-led organization. Wamulians (yes, that was an actual word) understood the brand and believed in it, which made for a more authentic consumer experience.

7. Complacent Competition. It’s important to note another factor in WaMu’s success…its competition. Without them WaMu would not have been as successful from a brand perspective. They were predictable, operating like every other bank and investing heavily in awareness campaigns rather than customer experience or brand culture. This created an important contrast to WaMu, a point of reference that solidified their position as just another bank while amplifying WaMu as the human-centered choice.

Here’s to the bold creative minds, willing to take a chance, kill a sacred cash cow and defy conventional wisdom. WaMu left a void in the market. To this day I am still waiting to see which bank brand will take its place.

4. Culture Of Brand. The WaMu brand was built from the inside out. Everyone knew what the brand’s promise was and their role in keeping it. Employee training and touchpoints reinforced critical behaviors, reward and recognition systems were in place and everyone in the organization was empowered to ‘over-deliver’ on the promise.

5. Creative Excellence. Thanks to the creative minds at Wolff Olins and Chiat\Day\LA, WaMu’s advertising was aligned through unconventional creative that grabbed attention and reinforced the unique spirit of the bank. Positioned as banking with a smile, WaMu’s voice was informal and unconventional, using plain English (no jargon) and a sense of humor, effectively lowering the threshold to engage.

6. Brand Led Innovation. What surprised me the most as a newcomer to WaMu was how the entire organization looked to the brand for inspiration and guidance. Both product and experience were designed with the brand in mind. It was truly a brand-led organization. Wamulians (yes, that was an actual word) understood the brand and believed in it, which made for a more authentic consumer experience.

7. Complacent Competition. It’s important to note another factor in WaMu’s success…its competition. Without them WaMu would not have been as successful from a brand perspective. They were predictable, operating like every other bank and investing heavily in awareness campaigns rather than customer experience or brand culture. This created an important contrast to WaMu, a point of reference that solidified their position as just another bank while amplifying WaMu as the human-centered choice.

Here’s to the bold creative minds, willing to take a chance, kill a sacred cash cow and defy conventional wisdom. WaMu left a void in the market. To this day I am still waiting to see which bank brand will take its place.

How The WaMu Brand Disrupted Banking

If you were born before 1990’s, chances are you will remember Washington Mutual bank (a.k.a. “WaMu”), especially if you were living in the western part of the United States. But the question isn’t so much if– but rather how you remember this bank.

A Dual Legacy

Unfortunately, most people will remember WaMu for its demise, its ending as the largest bank failure in American financial history. What started with risky sub-prime mortgage investments eventually triggered a credit down grade for the bank in September 2008, followed by a subsequent run on the bank and an overnight fire sale 10 days later to the highest bidder, JPMorgan Chase. It made global headlines. I’ll spare you the details because it has been covered many times before. But do think about it for a moment… A savings bank that grew and succeeded for more than 100 years, only to be defined and remembered by what happened in its final 10 days.

For me, this is not the legacy nor the lesson that I think is most memorable. (Besides, history has shown that we haven’t really learned much from it any way, but that’s a different story). What I think is most interesting is the brand angle of it all. As a branding professional I remember WaMu for the true pioneer that it was, the one that successfully disrupted an entire industry with a different, more human approach to banking.

Banking With A Smile

The premise of the WaMu brand was simple yet groundbreaking. They flipped the script of a traditional business model, aiming to change a rather stodgy, opulent and intimidating perception that is inherent to the industry.

WaMu was here to disrupt, wanting to be the bank for everyone – welcoming, friendly and a bit quirky. And their actions matched their words. Aside from being the first to offer free checking accounts without ATM fees, WaMu also lowered the barrier for people to engage at the branch level. Instead of the stuffy interiors and bullet proof glass counters with tellers in suits, the new WaMu branches featured modern, open floor plans with casually dressed associates that were welcoming and approachable.

This was known as the ‘Occasio’ retail concept, and the formula worked. In fact, the brand performed up until the very last month, consistently ranking highest in brand consideration for years – outperforming Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi Bank and pretty much any other competitor within its geographic footprint. How do I know? Well, I was there, leading the brand strategy team during the last 18 months, carefully monitoring our brand metrics along the way. Fertile Grounds For Disruption

Why was WaMu successful at disrupting a century-old industry? It’s not like they started from scratch, with a bright brand idea and a focused agile team that has little to lose. That’s the base premise and playbook of a startup. Instead, Washington Mutual was already a well-established brand in one of the oldest industries with a loyal following. Yet, they differentiated and disrupted in a meaningful way.

While I don’t claim to be an expert in organizational turn-around strategies, WaMu’s brand evolution did make me think about the conditions that need to exist for successful brand disruption. Looking back, I believe there are 7 critical elements.

Gifts and Goodbyes

       I met Lynn and Mrs. Ring later in the morning and they had just as equally cleaned up, they smelled fresh, but their clothing had a hint of musk to them, the same guard from yesterday was more than happy to follow along beside us after what happened yesterday. Apparently Gavin the Adestrian guard, carried me back to the embassy over his shoulder, and thankfully dressed me before doing so. This scared me though because I didn’t like doing being a mess in public, sexual things were fine with me, but I didn’t like the idea of others seeing me with fur matted with cum and smelling of male and female sex. To ease my mood Davin, the guard told me there was hardly anyone on the road when he carried me to the embassy.         Davin also explained that he was a long term resident of Cadara, he knew some fun locations to visit and even gave us the grand tour of the Noble Quarter of the city, showing us historical monuments, like the Orphanage of Wolfric Von Clarence one of the older Kings of Mincara, apparently King Wolfric’s mate the old queen of Mincara, couldn’t bear children so he adopted three children at random. It was said that one of those he adopted was human. Which caused a huge three day riot because that meant the human could be a king of Cadara. Though at the mention of humans, I had to ask about humans on Ecorein, because Lynn had never told me there where humans once on Cadara.        Lynn told me about the massive war that was caused because of some kind of misunderstanding. Apparently the human king was killed by a Mincridarn assassin. The king obviously countered this but the confusion and anger drove the humans of Ecorein to hate Mincridarins, so humans would abuse the Mincridarins and treat them like feral animals. War was the only option in the end, and the Mincridarins won that war, but in the end it turned into a slaughter. The humans lost their country, and there homes, and humans spread to the wind and slowly died out. There hasn’t been a living human seen in a hundred years.         Lynn explained that this is why Mincridarins had such a hard time trusting the humans from Earth, and why there were so many that didn’t want the royal government involved with them. After that war all the mistreatment and abuse brought about by humans, Mincridarins expected Earth humans to be no different so everyone expected another war to bloom, and with how advanced these modern humans were, Mincridarins were scared that a war would lead the Mincridarins to extinction. This history was never stated because Mincridarins feared that if humans found out their past, that they wouldn’t even talk to the Mincridarins.         After this simple brief history I understood why Mincridarins had to be so heavily regulated when it came to who could live on earth. They had to prove that they weren’t monsters, and try to provide a stable peaceful relationship. After that history lesson, the three of them kept telling me more about the history they couldn’t share on earth, talking about magical dangers, problems with demons and beings of shadows, and monsters in general. Most of the world beyond the city gates was populated with strong and dangerous beasts, Giants the size of castles, spiders the side of houses, chimeras, and wild feral dragons. Ecorein was a dangerous world, and it wasn’t meant for humans on earth, because it had taken years to coordinate some mutual understanding with the beasts, or at least the ones that had enough intelligence to speak properly. Though Davin cut in making a simple comment. “And that’s not even talking about the ones in the sea.” Which wasn’t a very reassuring thought.          “Then what about Matra, what are the monsters like there?” I asked looking up at Lynn who seemed to understand more about these monsters than anyone.          “Matra has giant insects, there are bees and wasps the size of your for arm. Crow fiends, which are giant black birds that make nests in some of the trees in Matra. They have thick Bone armor and three eyes on their head. Though as long as you don’t cross into their territory you’ll be fine. Then there are fruit spiders, that make nests in the branches of the Iron Bark trees and that live on the juices of the Gogen fruit, which is a giant water melon shaped seed that hangs from tendrils in the Iron Bark Trees. The fruit spiders are about the size of an average dinning chair, but their normally docile unless you provoke them. They kind of act like pigeons and you can scare them away if you want, and the fruit spider’s webs make great threads for fabric when treated properly, but their venom isn’t toxic but it’ll defiantly hurt for month.” Lynn explained and I was kind of dreading Matra because of my bad relationship with insects.          “Then there are Dragon sprites that live off of the vast amount of magic in the region, they aren’t evil but they do like to play pranks, and tease Mincridarn tree dwellers by stealing things and casting simple illusions. But on the forest floor there are beasts too dangerous to naturally fight.”         “Like the Ancient wolves?” Davin added and Lynn just looked at the dragon who fell silent under Lynn’s firm gaze.          “Yes like the Ancient wolves, which are ten times the size of the wolves on earth, they can grow to the size of large trucks. Then there are Black Queen Snakes, which can sometimes climb the Iron Bark Trees if there large enough, you can think of them as basilisks just without the ability to turn people into stone. Then there are also Chimera’s, and that’s only a few of the tangible beasts. That’s not even talking about the elementals and spirits that are born from the pools of magic around Matra. Spirits are normally not a problem and they just tend to be playful but it’s the corrupted spirits you have to watch out for, those ones will not hesitate to try and cause you physical harm. The Elementals as well, they’re normally calm unless provoked or corrupted. A lot of new beginner mages live in Matra to train in their fields of magic, so these mystical problems aren’t normally a problem.” Lynn explained and that was reassuring, but now it made sense why the people Matra found shelter near the top of trees.        Davin led us around the town till the early afternoon, where we made our way to the beach, it may have been a cold day but there were a few Mincridarins relaxing and laying on the beach enjoying the sea’s cool air. The sea was a shimmering blue, nothing like the ocean on earth. We walked across the protected beach, enjoying the wet sand underneath our hooves, paws and scales.          “Isen I’m going to transfer to Matra?” Lynn said looking at me, and I looked at him and Lynn pulled me close and capped my muzzle closed with his hand. “Isen so help me, if you try and say anything against it I will hurt you.” I pulled his hand off my mouth and looked at him. “The New York Sanctuary needs a mage, and you’re perfect Lynn.”          “Isen I’m warning you say anything against me again and I’ll beat your ass again… and not in the sexual way.” Lynn had to add because of the excitement the guard showed. He then capped my muzzle again and looked down at me.         “Isen I nearly lost you, please stop fighting me, because I’m not going to listen to you. I will keep my promise, I won’t try and kill anyone if you die, but at least let me stay close to you. I love you even if you don’t love me. I want to protect you.” Lynn looked off towards the sea when he spoke and then back down to me. His words were simply and I felt bad for abusing him and leading him on, allowing them to think I had died when I hadn’t.         “Will you not counter me again if I find a mage to take my place?” I gave into Lynn’s words, he was a bull when he wanted to be and nothing I was going to do was going to stop him. So I nodded in agreement, because it’s not like I had the right to refuse him, I had hurt him enough and he was trying to be with me. Lynn smiled happily and held me a bit tighter, allowing his tone and tEnder arm to surround me in his warm and soft touch. I could smell that familiar Irish soap that still clung to his fur even though it was a bit muskier than it was yesterday, as we continued to walk along the beach until Mrs. Ring spoke up.         “I’m thinking about coming back to Ecorein as well.” Mrs. Ring stated and Lynn and I looked at her, the hyena seemed nervous and she didn’t seem to want to talk about, but it seemed like she needed to get this off her chest. “I don’t want to stay on Earth.” Mrs. Ring finally stated as if she finally got a weight off her chest.          “I hate it, Earth, it’s all too much. The technology, the weapons, I can’t even get a fair job beyond the sanctuary. Even military contractors won’t let Mincridarins join them, because of the view of the American government and other governments. They don’t want too much of their military information leaked to us. But the schooling system, it’s so good and I know Andrew loves it there. I want to give him a better life, he deserves it, I can’t take that away from him…. I don’t know what to do!” Mrs. Ring called out in anger looking at me, and her form slumped, ever since he had gotten more personal with me she had become more emotional and expressive.          “A mother’s duty is to her child Mrs. Ring you know that.”          “I know dammit.” Mrs. Ring groaned pushing back her ears as she looked at me sadly.          “I’ll ask Sir Baal about it, there have been a few talented individuals that came through the portal maybe one was a teacher, but I doubt it, and if there is, they probably went to North Arc. But Mrs. Ring you should stay on Earth for Andrew, that little cub deserves a better education…”          “I know but I’m not sure what to do anymore, things have just been happening to him ever since you’ve been gone Isen. He’s just tired all the time, he doesn’t want to go to school, and he doesn’t even want to spar with the other cubs in his class. He kind of just sits in the corner. The teacher is worried about him because his grades are falling and he doesn’t play with anyone in his class anymore. I don’t know what to do, the doctors say he’s fine, but that’s it. I can’t figure out what’s wrong with him because he hardly talks to me anymore.” Mrs. Ring explained frantically, she was truly frightened and I could see why, but I think I also knew why Andrew was acting the way he was.          “Mrs. Ring he’s probably depressed?” I simply stated and Mrs. Ring looked at me confused.          “Depressed?”          “He’s sad, he’s lost two male figures in his life. You’re moron of Mate, and Me. You’ve told me before he thinks of me as a father. To him I’m dead.” I explained and I looked at her and she seemed lost in a few emotions, angry, sad and confused.          “Isen, would you please talk to him?” Mrs. Ring asked and my heart felt weak, because if I was right then Andrew’s depression was my fault, but I couldn’t talk to him the contracts I had signed prevented that, and I couldn’t go back to earth, not anymore it would create chaos, and now knowing Mincridarn history I understood why.          “I can’t Mrs. Ring you know that, I’d be breaking the contract I signed, and you can’t either. You know Andrew couldn’t keep something like this a secret.”         “Then what do I do?”  Mrs. Ring protested rather annoyed with me, her muzzle curled up in anger, and I fell silent, and turned away from her harsh gaze.          “Mrs. Ring move to Matra with me, Andrew just needs to know Isen is alive, and Isen won’t have the balls to tell you to do that, even though he knows that’s what you need to do.” Lynn countered flicking my snout creating a hollow thump that made me flinch. I looked at Mrs. Ring sadly, because Lynn was right, it was either Andrew came to live in Matra or he moved on an forgot about me.          “Lynn’s right, but Andrew should stay on Earth and learn from humans, it would give him a better life. He could do so much if given the chance.” I countered and Mrs. Ring took hold of my arm and pulled me close and wrapped her own arm around my shoulders.           “First I think it’s important to think about Andrew’s opinion, and I’m sure he’d give up leg just to see you alive again.” Mrs. Ring countered roughly, still relatively annoyed with me about beating around the bush, but she shifted the conversation, just as quickly as she shifted her gaze to Lynn who was very unamused with Mrs. Ring stealing me away from him.         “Hey he’s mine too.” She simply countered, and I didn’t counter her, because I didn’t want an my rear smacked raw again, so I just let the two glare at each other as we walked. After a few hours on the beach we walked to Lynn’s and Mrs. Ring’s shared room in the Inn, where we had some farewell sex, and we of course made sure to include the dragon. This time however I was conscious when I walked back to the Embassy during the early night.          “I’m so jealous, I wish I could find a female like you Isen.” The dragon simply stated scratching his loins, where his cock was still somewhat exposed in his pants, and hard from our shared sexual escapade.         “Well why are you looking for a female? I’m a male.” I simply countered and the Dragon laughed at this and knocked me in the shoulder, which hurt even with my new Mincridarn form. The Davin took me back to my room and wished me a good night’s rest. The female slave was tidying up my room when I entered, and when she saw the state I was in, she came to me and simply told me to wait while she started a bath.         The next day, I met Lynn and Mrs. Ring on not so good terms, I was going to leave for Matra today, we already preplanned for a week of fun, but I had to move on and they understood this. They didn’t debate it and they simply asked that I wait for them to return; they wanted to give me something. I wasn’t sure what they had planned, and I was half expecting them to return with a chest full of dildos, not that’d mind a chest full of dildos, but still wasn’t expecting them return with what they had.         I was waiting in my room while the female slave was brushing my fur down, when Davin opened the door and let them inside. IN their hands were gift wrapped boxes, a small and a medium sized one. The slave took her leave and the two sat down with me on the bed. Apparently they come up with the idea and split the cost of the gifts.         I tore open the largest first, and was rather stunned by what was in my hands, an entirely new laptop, a full on gaming laptop specially made for massive amounts of storage. In total Lynn told me the laptop had one and half terabytes of usable storage space. The laptop had this wonderful dark blue and black color pattern. He even told me he enchanted it to be nigh unbreakable, and weather resistant. He proved this by slamming the laptop on the ground and jumping on it. I wanted to scream because it was an amazing gift, and I was scared he had truly broken it. But in the end Lynn’s enchantments held and the laptop was perfectly safe. Though the box wasn’t empty, inside there was a tall and thick blue plastic zipper case of CD’s, containing human shows and movies of all kinds, organized by genre. They told me they had ransacked a DVD store, but they made sure that most of them were new because they didn’t want the CD’s ruined, they wanted them to make sure they lasted as long as possible and Lynn aided once again with his enchantments and rune writing abilities, by making the CD’s resistant to damage. They tied it all together with large laptop bag and small wireless mouse.         Lynn opened up the mouse and reveal a small glowing vial containing a yellow crystal, it was a crystal fragment that could contain magical energy, and then turn that magical energy into electrical energy, so the crystal powered the wireless mouse. This was all so much I wanted to counter them, all of this, must have taken a few thousand dollars.         They told me not to care about the price, it was set of celebratory gifts wrapped up into one, A full recovery gift, with welcome to our world, welcome to your new home, and finally a happy birthday gift because they knew they’d miss my birthday this year, which was in just a few weeks.        The last gift was creation of Lynn’s, it was a magical energy converter much like the battery in the mouse, but this one was larger and could store and handle much more than the small crystal. It was made to recharge the laptop, so I could properly use said laptop. The gifts were amazing and I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I hugged them both happily and kissed them just as much. Lynn told me about special charms on all the items which protected from all kinds of damages, and theft. The bag was enchanted to only be used by me so no one could open it or pry anything open. It was also enchanted to lighten the load of items it contained. So the shoulder bag was near weightless, but only to me. It was enchanted like Thor’s Hammer, only I could lift and use it.         I owed them big time for everything they had given me, and the accepted this happily and planned to hold this over me, but in the end Davin came to collect me. We all had to say our goodbyes, and I kissed them both goodbye, and they deserved nothing less.
