VAMPIRES/DHAMPIRS: These are vampires/Dhampirs who moved into the hotel during the 1930s after being told it would be the safest plece for them.

Countess Indis Ingweron: Wealthy noblewoman, Vampiress, maker of Lady Thuringwethil, and mother to Nolofinwë, Findis, Arafinwë and Írimë Ingweron. She moves herself and her brood to Hotel Angband in 1936 after Faeldor told it would be the safest place for them all. It is here she turns Thuringwethil, her lady’s maid, into a vampire, after she contracts tuberculosis from a guest and begs to be saved. She also strikes up a friendship with Míriel Þerindë of the Þerindë family after she approached her for new dresses to be made.

Nolofinwë, Findis, Arafinwë and Írimë Ingweron: The dhampir/demigod children of Countess Indis and Faeldor, her maker. Unlike Fëanáro and his kin, they have always lived lives of great wealth and privilege, and they have a father who loves them. Nevertheless, they go on to form friendships with the Þerindë family. Nolofinwë is the most responsible, while Findis is the most adventurous. Arafinwë is the gentlest of the siblings, while Írimë is the most sadistic. Írimë is also involved in a causal relationship with Makar Tarkil, one of the bodyguards who works for Mr. Bauglir and Mr. Gorthaur.

Thuringwethil: Vampiress and lady’s maid to Countess Indis and her daughters. She knows the secret of the Ingweron family, but she refuses to reveal it as she is loyal and they are very good to her. Thuringwethil turned down multiple offers to be turned until she contracts tuberculosis from a guest in 1937. Then she begs her lady to save her life as she realizes she does not want to die.

Hi! I’m writing my own music, and Adamandi is an inspiration. I’m just wondering, has there been any inspiration when it came to you two writing musicals? (Adamandi, The Art of Pleasing Princes, Ghost Story, and any other future musicals.) Such as, any movies, TV shows or any other musicals? I find the aesthetics and music in these musicals all so different and I love that! And the themes in these musicals are so interesting! (/vpos!)

Great question! It's hard to separate genuine inspiration from research, since once we get an idea we usually try to consume everything that's related to what we want to write to figure out what we wanna add to the cultural conversation. Sometimes we also get inspiration from a work because we don't like it and want to position our piece in opposition to that one. But for this post we'll try to keep it to Genuine Inspiration that we consumed before we wrote each piece (hey, this thing is cool, this helped me figure out how I wanna write my thing for the better.)

Maybe we'll break this up by show:

TAOPP

Fun light fantasy with heart that plays with the tropes of fantasy settings, a la classic DND settings, Six of Crows, Terry Pratchett

Mel took a class on the High Middle Ages and read On The Origins of Courtliness (from which the title is derived!) and The Ballad of Tristan and Isolde, which got sort of melangéd into the Princes court world- living and dying by the king's pleasure, etc.

Aesthetically, the TV show The Great? Mel watched it a little bit before writing Princes and the anachronistic dialogue + rules of court drama have something to do with it.

Not much musical inspo for this tbh, I think it was just our first go at Writing A Show Together so a lot of our influences were just other musical soundtracks we thought might be the vibe we were aiming for. (Probably Pippin, 35mm, Great Comet, etc..)

Similarly with lyrics, I wasn't really thinking of a lyrical style, but I think I based a lot of my song forms on Something Rotten as the other show I knew set in the same era (using the very loose definition of "the same era"). ~Mel

For musicals, Passion was really inspirational in both tone and subject matter.

Lyrically, I tried to think about Falsettos and Sunday- very lyrically dense shows that portray the intricate vocabularies of a specific, often highly intellectual subculture. What shibboleths do academics use to identify who does and doesn't belong? And why is the word "shibboleth" so not singable :( I think really liking Matilda as a kid also had something to do with it. ~Mel

I looked at a lot of horror musicals for a research paper but didn't like them much. (Except Little Shop. I love Little Shop and kinned the dentist in high school.) So I guess that's inspiration but in a what-Not-to-do way? Which is how I stumble on a lot of "inspiration" - Elliot

Attire: the standard Ryoūtei uniform adorned inwardly with white instead of black,frilly collar and cuffs,all neatly held together in a pearly ribbon. The look is completed with a pair of polished mary janes, the white socks beneath folded so that they cushion her ankles properly.No one could use sore feet whilst getting educated.

Casual outfit consists of a lilac turtleneck,a pleated skirt that drapes down below the knees,dark colored tights and a pair of thick leather boots that appear 2 sizes too big.

Sleepwear is watered down to a flowy white gown,held up by the thin straps on her shoulders.This is the only instance she is seen barefoot,as the state of slumber should be comfortable as it is practical.

Likes:her Master,black coffee,American films(mostly cop thrillers and horror flicks but she consumes whatever)animals,bugs,anything with a pulse really,convenience store food,naming things in a way she remembers

Dislikes: confinement,the silent treatment,loss of her purpose,filth. Like lies. And not to forget the filthy liars that come with them.

Personality: A bubbly yet incredibly cheeky specimen. Due to being closed off from the outer realm,civilization if you will,for years at a time,she carries an almost absent air to her that warps her sense of time,struggling to pick up on the social queues of modernity. However,being a tricky learner doesn't deter her from desiring to learn more about this complex dimension full of whimsy,turning to cultural commerce and media for further guidance (most notably cinema and combini junk). Her theatricality can often be seen as off-putting.

Backstory: Not much is known regarding the identity of Miho ,other than her one singular purpose: to serve her Master,the person who only is on possession of the rosary but also has a wish unadulterated enough to release her from the confines that bind her within the divine instrument. Alot of subsequent holders have attempted to exploit that unspoken contract, twisting the moral implications and corrupting it beyond recognition where the prospects of both blessing and damnation are very much likely.

•her only pair of cross shaped earrings. It is speculated that rust has gathered on the metal,from how long they've been screwed into her ears. She refuses to wear any other jewellery.

The latter proved to be the truth through her interactions with the materials around and especially the boys of this predicament. Wasting no time in protecting her Master by all means necessary against those blasphemous pricks.Though Yui can be quite unsettled or even intimidated at Miho's erratic way of handling things,she can't help but sympathise with her unwarranted isolation.Among other things,dhe finds her childlike wonder endearing whilst feeling the need to harbour the responsibility of nurturing and guiding her, as her only existing kin.

THEME: Indie Campaign Games

Coyote & Crow

Jump into a science-fantasy future in a North American continent that was never colonized, a land changed by a supernatural force that alters plants, animals and humans alike. Coyote and Crow has a unique d12 dice pool system and deep characters that have room to grow over many, many sessions. The (wholly Indigenous) creators of this game are also consistently creating new exciting supplements, including their most recent horror supplement now funding on Kickstarter: Ahu Tiiko.

Backwater, Backroads & Backwoods

The Backwards roleplaying house of games is set in an alternate post-apocalyptic gothic Americana, in which unlucky investigators do their best to protect the towns the government forgot from all kinds of horrors. The books are cross-compatible and provide oodles of options for a spooky roadtrip across the USA. The creators of this series also have a number of published adventures, great resources for the intimidated GM.

The Wildsea

The Wildsea is a swashbuckling game of voyaging amongst a sea of towering green, in a world where leviathan squirrels and rogue card-punch constructs are fearsome foes to overcome, and ruins rustled up by the ever-changing waves hide precious secrets of a world that has long since ended. Play as sentient fungi, cactus-people, spider hoards and more as you explore a vast and formidable ocean full of danger and beauty. Character creation requires you to cobble together pieces from your background, species, and post, creating colourful characters with depth that can be explored for sessions upon sessions of fun.

Stoneburner

Stoneburner is a Breathless game about space dwarves fortifying an asteroid mine left to them by a deceased patriarch, but it's also a game about building a stronghold and a community, and defending it from demons from the underworld. The game runs on Breathless, which is an exceptionally easy system to learn, but it also provides a lot of guidance for combat, looting, crafting and taking care of your community.

Brinkwood: Blood of Tyrants

Vampires have conquered Cardenfell. Having claimed ownership over the entire Isle, they demand a combination of blood and silver from you and your kin, a rent that keeps you downtrodden and destitute. However, they have also angered the Fae, who have agreed to lend you their power in the form of magical masks that give you the blessing of anonymity as well as supernatural powers. Mask Up. Spill Blood. Drink the Rich.

Brinkwood is designed for the long haul, with strongholds to infiltrate and factions to befriend as you slowly but surely build a revolution that unites the common folk of Cardenfell and brings the parasite down. Collaboratively upgrade playbooks that make you more and more powerful, and try to resist the urges of the things that give the masks their power.

Hearts of Wulin

Hearts of Wulin is a game about wuxia melodrama, in which your characters' hearts are constantly torn between conflicting loyalties, and their relationships woven in a complex tapestry. Lowell Francis is currently working on an expansion that allows you to add mysteries to a core game that already gives you fantastical settings and courtly intrigue.

The problem with the 'play another game that isn't D&D' thing is that every time it comes around, inevitably, somebody says something to the effect of: "So what's the game should I play instead of it" and this just makes me want to slam my head into the floor in frustration because it totally misses the point. There is not, and cannot be, a single game that I can cheerfully reccomend blind to everybody to replace D&D as their forever game. This is for two reasons: 1) Different players (which includes GMs) have different tastes. People look for different levels of complexity, levels of narrative control, levels of competitiveness, amounts of customisability, genres, tones, settings, campaign-lengths, degrees of generic or specificness, and required arts-and-crafts projects. Without knowing somebody's specific tastes - which they might not even really be sure of themselves if all they know is D&D - you can't reccomend them a game that will suit those tastes, because taste is subjective. 2) you don't actually want a single forever game that you play to the exclusion of all else. People will want a change of pace, or to explore different ideas, or the excitement of novelty. Instead of simply having 'my game that I play', you want to pick the game that works best for what you want to do today. "Oh, what game should I swap in to replace D&D?" is a fucking assinine question. It's like asking "you're into music, what song should I listen to?" My man I don't know you, and even if I did even the best song is gonna suck after the 500th repetition if its all you listen to.
