Intel vs AMD: EPYC Siena rivals Sapphire Rapids with less power

AMD EPYC Siena Performance
Both of AMD’s new Zen 4c equipped EPYC 8324P and 8324PN (Siena) server CPUs were recently tested in Linux by Phoronix, and the results showed that both chips deliver exceptional performance when used in server applications. Phoronix’s tests revealed that both of AMD’s Zen 4c processors were capable of matching the performance of an Intel Xeon Gold 6421N 32-core CPU in most tasks, although using a far lower amount of power than the Intel processor.
AMD’s EPYC most recent range of EPYC server CPUs, the 8004 series, focuses on power economy rather than sheer CPU performance. This is reflected in the 8324P and 8324PN models of the EPYC server CPUs. The new Zen 4c core, which is included into all of AMD’s 8004 processors, is 35% more compact than its predecessor, Zen 4, and boasts improved power efficiency compared to Zen 4’s bigger version. The raw performance of an AMD Zen 4c core is lower than that of a normal Zen 4 core. This is the single drawback of the Zen 4c core.
The 8324P and PN are located squarely in the centre of the CPU stack for AMD’s 8004 series. They include 32 cores, 128 MB of L3 cache, six DDR5 memory channels, and 96 PCIe Gen 5 lanes. They are distinct from one another in terms of clock speeds and power ratings; for example, the 8324P has a base clock of 2.65 GHz, a boost clock of 3 GHz, and a TDP of 180W. The 8324PN, on the other hand, has a base speed of 2.05 GHz, a boost frequency of 3 GHz, and a TDP that is significantly lower at 130 watts.
This is due to the fact that the PN series of 8004 CPUs were developed specifically for installations that must comply with the Network Equipment Building System (NEBS), which calls for systems that are able to survive higher operational temperature ranges than ordinary chips.
Low Power Draw AMD EPYC Siena
Phoronix evaluated the performance of the two chips in a variety of different benchmarks, which together equate to seven distinct categories. These categories include artificial intelligence workloads, video encoding, code compiling, file compression/decompression, high-performance computing, and other tasks.
When both processors were set to their highest power settings, the performance of the two AMD CPUs was superior to that of the Intel Xeon Gold 6421N 32 core. The Xeon 6421N was 2.7% faster than the 8324P when it was configured with its default settings, 2.5% slower when it was configured with its lowest adjustable TDP of 155W, and 5% faster when it was configured with the chip’s performance determinism mode.
It should not come as a surprise that the 8324PN ran at a little slower speed due to the lower power rating and base clock parameters. The Intel Xeon was 11.8% faster than the 8324PN in its stock configuration; however, the 8324PN was still able to outperform the chip in its performance determinism mode, achieving a 4.8% advantage over the Intel CPU.
AMD EPYC Siena Optimization
Even with performance determinism mode turned on, the 8324P and 8324PN were able to provide average power consumption ratings that were considerably below the 100W threshold. This was one of the many ways in which AMD prioritized power efficiency. On the other hand, Intel’s counterpart to Sapphire Rapids, which had an average power consumption rating of 137 watts, was unable to come even near to matching AMD’s level of power efficiency.
Phoronix’s testing has shown that AMD’s most recent Zen 4c core is quite powerful and is capable of producing performance that can compete with the absolute best that Intel has to offer right now. Although Intel may have beaten AMD to the E-core game with the release of Alder Lake, the most recent benchmarks demonstrate that AMD is capable of producing a delectable efficiency core that is capable of competing with Intel’s high-performance cores under certain conditions.

Dell+AMD+Intel: Building the Next-Gen PowerEdge Portfolio
Industry-standard server vendors’ product announcements often focus as much on the components that strategic partners provide as they do on new solutions. That is a natural approach since off-the-shelf components play vital roles in new system features and capabilities. So, it is sensible for vendors to spotlight their partners’ latest/greatest technologies.
That was certainly the case last week when Lenovo, HPE and Cisco Systems all launched new solutions highlighting the benefits offered by AMD’s new EPYC 7003 Series Processors. But one vendor – Dell – followed a considerably different path by announcing a portfolio of 17 new PowerEdge servers featuring both AMD EPYC 7003 and upcoming Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Let’s consider why the company broke from the server vendor pack and why that is important for Dell’s partners and customers, including those that work with the company’s OEM organization.
Splitting hairs or comprehensive storytelling? Some might say that I’m splitting hairs here in focusing on rhetorical trivia that will have little, if any, impact on actual events. After all, won’t other system vendors celebrate the launch of the new Xeon Scalable chips (aka Ice Lake) with new and refreshed servers when Intel makes its formal announcement on April 6?
Absolutely. It is arguable that giving AMD and Intel, along with their respective new silicon solutions, full individual attention accords them the respect they deserve and may be less confusing than trying to spread attention across a host of new server products featuring both companies’ chips. After all, complexity is often the enemy of simplicity, especially when it comes to communications.
However, complexity is not always or even necessarily an adversary. In fact, if you handle it with care, complexity can become an ally, especially in the service of telling full and comprehensive stories. That was Dell’s strategy—using new silicon features and functions to highlight server innovations resulting from both its partners’ and Dell’s own development efforts.
Those include eye-opening enhancements in system performance (including boosting workload-specific solutions), energy efficiency and system cooling, edge computing and security that span the entire PowerEdge portfolio. This approach also provided Dell the opportunity to emphasize the value of its recently announced Project Apex cloud-as-a-service solutions and its Flex on Demand offering for acquiring and paying for data center products.
What do customers and partners gain? Why is this approach important to or even preferable for Dell’s customers and partners? Most importantly, it provides valuable context for the improvements that the company is executing across all its server lines. Sure, new CPUs and GPUs have major roles in that effort but, as Dell noted, the new systems are also bolstered by 1,100 patents the company either owns or has filed. Plus, PowerEdge servers offer features exclusive to Dell, including the company’s Secured Component Verification and Root of Trust offerings.
It is also important to remember the relative competitive positions of AMD and Intel. While the former has enjoyed notable success under the leadership of CEO Lisa Su and her executive team, its data center market share remains well below 10% and its EPYC revenues/earnings are a fraction of what Intel derives from Xeon Scalable. The IT industry loves David vs. Goliath stories, but in practical terms, more data center customers care about Intel’s newest Xeon chips than AMD EPYC.
Finally, as companies approach the end of the traditional fiscal year, many are finalizing purchasing and development plans for the year ahead. That has been a fraught process for companies during the Covid-19 pandemic, so it is vital for vendors to provide as much clarity about new and near-term solutions as possible. This is a particularly important point for Dell’s sizable channel partner community and customers in its multi-billion-dollar OEM business whose businesses depend on long-term guidance.
Final analysis Like most portfolio refreshes, Dell’s new and upcoming server portfolio has much to like. In particular, the company’s new PowerEdge R6515 (AMD) and R750 (Intel) deliver notable boosts in performance for business-critical and highly virtualized applications. The same can be said for the new HPC- and AI-focused PowerEdge XE8545 (AMD) and R750xa (Intel), both of which feature NVIDIA GPUs and software solutions. Finally, Dell’s new Intel-based PowerEdge XR11 and XR12 ruggedized systems should significantly increase the options available for customers focused on building or enhancing edge computing environments.
Overall, by telling the story of its new PowerEdge portfolio in full, Dell has done right by its strategic silicon partners. More importantly, the company has also provided valuable information and actionable insights to its data center customers and channel community. By making complexity an ally, Dell has made itself a better ally to those who depend on it.

Intel afirma que el Core i3
el nuevo Centro de Control AMD PRO que deja a los profesionales de TI gestionar de manera sencilla un conjunto de equipos AMD desde el lugar de trabajo. Como los modelos de consumo aguantan la arquitectura del sistema heterogéneo (HSA) que deja trabajar juntos en ciertas labores los núcleos de CPU y gráficos.

Salvo el 2500X que tiene 4C/8T y que solo están libres en China, todos los otros van a contar con 6 núcleos físicos y doce lógicos, estando libres en versiones normales y “X” en los que varía el TDP entre 65 y 95W, y la frecuencia. Las versiones Ryzen 2000 tienen dieciseis MB de caché y doce nm, al paso que los Ryzen 3000 Zen dos ascienden a nada menos que 32 MB con si arquitectura basada en chiplets. Como anunciamos antes, estas CPU están desbloqueadas y no tienen GPU integrada, además de esto incluye un disipador de serie bastante competente. Considerablemente más sentido sí que tienen los Ryzen 5, de largo son los más vendidos hoy en día por su desempeño gaming y para equipos con alto volumen de labores simultáneas. A partir de acá todos y cada uno de los procesadores Ryzen cuentan con tecnología multihilo SMC.
Estos IGP están basados en la arquitectura GCN con hasta setecientos cuatro unidades de sombreado para producir cuarenta y cuatro TMUs y ocho ROPs a 1400 MHz con capacidad de overclocking. Con ellos conseguiremos rendimiento suficiente para jugar a títulos poco exigentes en Full HD o bien 720p a buenas tasas de FPS, siendo el ejemplo más claro el Fornite.
Por otro lado AMD usa un cable trenzado de gran calidad frente al cable desnuedo que Intel ha usado tradicionalmente en sus disipadores de aire que entregaba de serie. La frecuencia base del nuevo Ryzen X es de tres,4 Ghz y en modo turbo es capaz de llegar hasta los tres,7 Ghz pudiendo hacer empleo de la tecnología XFR de los nuevos procesadores con arquitectura ZEN llegando hasta los tres,9 Ghz. (Recordemos que el XFR de los procesadores Ryzen es un overclock que es capaz de hacer Ryzen automáticamente dependiendo de la carga de trabajo). En el caso del Ryzen la frecuencia base es de tres,1 Ghz y en modo turbo llega hasta los 3,4 Ghz llegando a los tres,45 Ghz merced a XFR.
Intel Celeron
Ahora que la propia gama de procesadores Core i de la empresa de Santa Clara para equipos de sobremesa comienza con 4 núcleos y llega hasta 6, los usuarios mega-tareas podrían verse tentados por Intel. Al tiempo que AMD ha alcanzado la paridad de rendimiento, la batalla está ahora ostensiblemente orientada a la cantidad de tareas que se pueden hacer al unísono, en lugar de la rapidez para hacer dicha labor. Si comparamos cualquiera de los 2 Ryzen tres con los core i3 de Intel se me ocurren varias razones por las que me decantaría por el Ryzen 3. Indudablemente los 4 núcleos que incorpora en frente de los 2 de un i3 y el multiplicador desbloqueado para efectuar OC transforma a estos procesadores en serios aspirantes a reemplazar a los Core i3 de su situación de hegemonía actual.
Mas debido al carácter generalista de este artículo, me centro en los procesadores para el campo consumo y no en otros más concretos de profesionales y empresas como los Xeon y EPYC. Antes de empezar a leer, es conveniente tener claro que la potencia de los procesadores no depende solamente de aspectos como la frecuencia base y turbo que tengan. La arquitectura interna con la que esté creados es lo que más influye, por sobre las frecuencias, con parámetros como la cantidad de memoria caché que incluyan o bien el número de instrucciones máquina que pueden ejecutar simultáneamente como aspectos esenciales.
Acerca de los procesadores AMD Ryzen 3 tenemos actual hoy día la 2ª generación, es decir, la arquitectura Zen+ con proceso a 12 nm.
AMD también dispone de buenos procesadores de esta clase, si bien es verdad que Intel acapara la mayoría del mercado con sus potentes Core i5 e i7 para equipos gaming.
El fabricante ha optado por no incluir ninguna de estas CPU en la arquitectura Zen dos de siete nm estas CPU.
Aun de este modo, podrían ser una gran opción para usuarios con presupuestos más bajos sin abandonar a equipos que hasta 4 núcleos y 8 hilos de procesamiento con gráficos integrados.
Quizá también os sea interesante conocer los procesadores AMD Ryzen destinados a ordenadores portátiles y dispositivos sin cables.
Esta es la sección donde vamos a poder localizar los mejores procesadores de la gama Intel Core i3 y los AMD Ryzen 3.
¿Qué procesador AMD es igual al Core i5?
AMD Ryzen 5: la gama intermedia para la mayor parte de usuarios. Equivale al Intel Core i5. AMD Ryzen 7: también es equivalente al Core i7 de Intel.
Están desbloqueados, no tienen gráficos integrados y necesitan un disipador de alto rendimiento o refrigeración líquida de doscientos cuarenta o 360 mm para que den su máximo. En la familia i5 se va un pasito más allá para lograr en todos y cada uno de los casos un recuento de 6 núcleos desde la 8ª generación, puesto que en Kaby Lake cara atrás solo tenían cuatro. Al igual que ocurre con los Ryzen 5, podemos decir que son la opción sensata para gaming, por presentar unas frecuencias de trabajo de hasta 3,7 GHz, y una memoria caché bastante alta de nueve MB. Coste ajustado y alta capacidad de procesamiento para juegos y gran volumen de tareas simultáneas. El mercado de CPU cada vez se hace más y más complicado, una incesante lucha de poder entre procesadores Intel vs AMD Ryzen para ver quién alcanza la supremacía.
Como el resto de la familia Ryzen, los nuevos mil doscientos y 1300X se basan en la arquitectura ZEN, de catorce nm, con la eficiencia y multihilo como argumentos principales. Se apoyan en la tecnología SenseMI, con sensores que controlan temperatura y consumo para poder ofrecer un TDP bastante bajo y amoldar las labores del procesador de forma más eficiente. lo que ha hecho amd con estos procesadores es muy grande un ejemplo el ryzen x iguala al Intel i7 de gama media en juegos y lo supera en labores pesadas de renderizado y cuesta 80 euros menos que el i7. AMD ha indicado que ambos compiten directamente con los Core i y Core i de Intel, aunque gracias a sus cuatro núcleos reales y al overclock es muy posible que los RYZEN X y 1200 terminen ofertando un rendimiento muy afín al de los Core i5 siete mil cuatrocientos.

La llegada de los Ryzen 3000 está encabezada por el Ryzen que es un procesador de 6 núcleos físicos con multihilo, y su potencia es afín al Core i , tanto en mononúcleo como multinúcleo. La competencia que evidentemente beneficia a los jugadores que ahora están en su derecho a una opción considerablemente más extensa y modelos que continúan ganando poder y versatilidad. Como con los otros chips AMD discutidos anteriormente, el Threadripper 2990WX ofrece computación de alto desempeño, renderización y codificación 3D, mas de nuevo se encuentra desprevenido contra Intel en el campo de los juegos.
En nuestras pruebas, hallamos que son mucho opciones mejores de juego para principiantes que los chips de Intel equiparables. Alrededor del límite de los $ 100 dólares, ofrecen una increíble potencia en los juegos. No son tan veloces como las CPUs Zen dos de nueva generación que nos han robado el corazón en las últimas semanas, pero son las mejores CPUs para juegos básicos que ofrece AMD.
En este rango de costos es donde las CPUs Ryzen de AMD verdaderamente brillan, ofreciendo un increíble rendimiento multinúcleo, una fantástica potencia de juego y, habitualmente, una relación calidad precio mucho mayor que la de sus análogas de Intel. La primera generación de CPUs Ryzen introdujo un elevado número de opciones, mas ahora son difíciles de encontrar a precios aceptables. Como conclusión, ambos procesadores son excelentes opciones para montarse un sistema para jugar y trabajar con él. Aunque, para trabajar, el que mejor desempeño nos va a deparar es el modelo de AMD, singularmente si los programas que empleamos son capaces de usar sus 12 hilos. Mas, más esencial aún, AMD ha conseguido eliminar el hueco que exist��a entre el procesado de instrucciones con un solo núcleo entre Intel y mismos, merced a una sustancial mejora de su IPC.
Suben a 6 núcleos y 12 hilos en Coffe Lake y hasta los ocho núcleos y ocho hilos en Coffe Lake refresh. Se identifican por ofrecer un alto rendimiento y están preparados para resistir en una transición general. La versión ‘extreme’ puede contar con de entre 6 y dieciocho núcleos, perfectos para jugar y para trabajar.
El rendimiento de un A12, por ejemplo, es un diez por cien menor que el de un Athlon 220GE, por ello no son una opción demasiado atrayente. Esta sociedad pronto llegó a su final, con la era de los Pentium en Intel y K5 en AMD, en donde AMD prosiguió a solas a veces mojándole la oreja a Intel sacando primero los procesadores de sesenta y cuatro bits de consumo general, y luego las CPU multinúcleo. El panorama actual está muy reñido, mas AMD se está colocando por encima con sus Ryzen, una serie que ya va por su segunda revisión a 7nm al tiempo que Intel no logra despegar con los 10 nm.
