Islamabad court asks police to verify suspect's license MNA Kashmala Tariq. — File photo ISLAMABAD: The court hearing a case relating to an accident involving former MNA Kashmala Tariq’s son has asked police to verify his driving license, according to Geo News.  Tariq’s son, who is the Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace, was involved in a traffic accident on February 2. An interim bail hearing of Azlan Shah, Kashmala’s son, was held by the District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Sohail. The suspect’s lawyer told the court that they had reached an agreement with the relatives of three of the four people killed in the accident. Shah’s lawyer argued before the court that since bailable provisions were included in the case registered against the suspect, he should be granted bail. The government’s attorney, on the other hand, opposed the bail request, saying that the suspect’s license had not yet been verified. He further said that since an agreement had not been reached with the relatives of all four deceased, the bail request should be rejected. The judge ordered the police to verify the license submitted by the suspect and suspended proceedings until later in the day. The accident Four people were killed after five speeding vehicles of the Federal Ombudsperson for the Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplaces Kashmala Tariq’s protocol broke a signal and crashed into a car and motorcycle on the Srinagar Highway in Islamabad earlier this month. Police had confirmed that the former MNA’s protocol vehicles broke the sector G-11 traffic signal and collided with two vehicles, killing four people and injuring two others. One of the vehicles bore a government number plate, police had disclosed. Tariq’s husband and son were also in one of the vehicles. Police had shifted Tariq’s husband Waqas Khan to the Ramna Police Station, while her son and others in the convoy had allegedly fled the scene. A police spokesperson said action will be taken against those responsible in accordance with the law. Kashmala Tariq denies accusations Kashmala Tariq, in a video message, denied that she and her family fled the scene, adding that they had remained at the site of the accident until the arrival of the ambulances to help the injured and the deceased. The former MNA had said her son was in the car behind hers, while she and her husband were in the same one. “This whole matter is being blamed on my son but the driver was unable to control the car. “It was a terrible accident and I feel sadness in my heart for the children who lost their lives,” she had said. The former lawmaker had explained that everyone, including her son and her husband, had gone to the police station after the horrific crash in which her convoy was involved. “Justice will be served but please don’t unjustly drag anyone’s child into the matter,” she underscored, adding that neither she nor her family tried to escape the crash site. “In fact, we even called an ambulance ourselves,” she added. “We were travelling in two vehicles. We left Lahore around 7pm yesterday and crossed the toll plaza at around 10:30pm. My husband and I were in the same vehicle. “As we reached the Kashmir Highway, we experienced a sudden shock and push and got injured. The driver was unable to control the car. It was a terrible accident,” she stated. Kashmala Tariq said she was upset over the loss of lives of the children who were in the car that her convoy hit. “We have children ourselves too. There is no substitute for human lives,” she had stressed. “My son was in the car behind us… I don’t understand what kind of media trial is this. The CCTV video of the accident should be shown. “My son’s pictures are being broadcast and shared everywhere when, in fact, he was riding in the car behind us. If, in any way, this was our fault or had we been driving, then we bring our hands together to apologise. “I have no words. Please don’t misreport and show only what’s is true,” Tariq had added. https://timespakistan.com/islamabad-court-asks-police-to-verify-suspects-license/11088/

Building the Roads of the Future in India
Akhilesh Srivastava, CGM of the IT & Highway Operations division of the NHAI, will deliver a key presentation at the upcoming 4th Annual Roads & Highways forum in Singapore in April 2018. The international forum is being jointly hosted by the International Road Federation (IRF) and Marcus Evans.
The global conference - themed “Transforming roads of the future by redefining strategic road networks” - will host 20 renowned industry experts and distinguished speakers from around the world. One of the 20 delegates, Akhilesh Srivastava, on day-one of the forum, will deliver the presentation on "India’s highway modernisation cluster project and its impact on trade." Besides this, he, along with another eminent dignitary, will also expound China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) policy.
The NHAI CGM’s presentation on highway modernisation will analyse the following benefits: Integrating IT in the highway project lifecycle; Performing a cost analysis; and, Introducing Electronic Toll Collection.
The cluster project that Srivastava will expound during the technical summit is an ongoing initiative of the Government of India to modernise the national highways. The government assigned the enterprise to the NHAI with CGM Akhilesh Srivastava at the helm.
The mega infrastructure undertaking comprises of several IT and roadways projects, including:
1. Wayside Amenities (WSA)
2. Electronic Toll Collection (ETC)
3. Road Asset Management System (RAMS)
4. Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS)
5. Industrial drones (UAVs) and LiDARs for the highway projects
The WSA further comprises three sub-structures – Highway Village, Highway Nest, and Highway Nest (Mini). These subprojects, two of which are already operational in several national highways and their Toll plazas in India, are providing highway commuters with advanced, hygienic civic amenities on and near highways, besides acting as a safe halting point for the motorists. These amenities include everything from basic facilities such as drinking water, restrooms, ATMs, petrol bunks, and first aid to advanced facilities like franchise restaurants, hospitals, conference rooms, and helipads.
The ETC, which is already functional at many of the Toll gantries in India, is a part of the Central government’s efforts to digitalise its public services. The new payment method uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to enable motorists to electronically pay the toll fee without having to stop at the plaza. This system reduces the need for paperwork, the need for toll officers, the chances of toll fraud, enhances security and saves fuel and time.
The RAMS and ATMS are build to manage highway incidents such as accidents, traffic jams and gridlocks, with the help of technology. Both the systems use networks of technologies and software to carry out their tasks. The ATMS is also used for dispatching emergency facilities such as ambulance, cranes, and tow-away trucks. Both the systems use UAVs and LiDARs to support their operations.
The UAVs (or drones) and LiDARs are being used mainly for gathering geospatial and surveillance data on all the highway projects. They are also used for creating DPRs for those projects before beginning construction.
Akhilesh Srivastava will represent India and its engineering feats at the Roads & Highways forum, and bring home ideas that will help in building the roads of the future in the country.

This is how Indian Highways are transforming into Smart road networks
The National Highways in India are carrying 40 % of overall trade, although they constitute only 1.7% of the road network in the country. Apart from the trade, the National Highways are connecting States in an unparallel way. In the words of Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, “An efficient network of roads is essential to take development to every nook and corner of the country, just like a network of veins is essential to take blood to all parts of the body”. Such is the importance of the National Highways for India.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), an agency responsible for the development and maintenance of the National Highways in India, has undertaken a massive program called “National Highways development project” (NHDP) in 1998. This project aims to revamp the National Highway Network through all the possible means. Since the inception of NHDP, the progress of National Highways went by leaps and bounds. Some of its recent developments are transforming Indian highway network into a smart Highway Network. They are:
FASTags
Under the dynamic leadership of Mr Akhilesh Srivastava, CGM (IT and Highway operations), the FASTag toll collection also known as Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) project is going well. FASTags works with Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID).
FASTags are RFID stickers that are to be pasted on the windscreens of vehicles. When a vehicle with a FASTag passes through a Toll Plaza, the sensors near the Toll Plaza will detect the RFID code and the toll charges get deducted from the account linked to that FASTag sticker. Soon, every NHAI’s Toll Plaza will be having a dedicated lane for FASTag vehicles. This system not only reduces the transportation time of goods but also allows transparency.
GPS TOLLING
Also referred as Open Tolling, this system can help NHAI to avoid infrastructural investment. This system works on GPS technology. Based on the vehicle’s GPS location, the automated software deducts toll charges from the account linked to that vehicle. This is an automated service and no human intervention in required to complete this process. It started as a pilot project between Delhi and Mumbai Corridor, and soon it is going to spread across India. Once it gets implemented across India, this technology is going to change the way people travel on Indian Highways.
Advance Emergency Traffic Incident Management
At times, the Indian Highways are infamous for accidents and other fatalities. In order to reduce the number of fatalities, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is setting up a top-notch Incident Management System on the National Highways. Through this system, the NHAI is planning to install ambulances, cranes, and patrolling vehicles on the highways at regular intervals, so they can be available in times of emergencies. The idea behind installing these facilities at the highways is to save as many lives as possible. All the activities of these vehicles are monitored through the GPS technology and the aim is to make sure they reach the accident spot within 15 minutes. A toll-free 24X7 National Highways Helpline – 1033 –  for the commuters' assistance has already been setup by the NHAI.
UAV Monitoring & RAMS
The NHAI is making use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to monitor the developmental works undertaken by it. It has also set up the Road Asset Management System (RAMS) to map the assets of National Highways in a three dimensional way. In order to do so, NHAI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ISRO to tap the advantages of satellite technology.
The Highway commuters' wait is finally coming to an end, as the Indian Highways are on their track to development. A lot has been done and a lot has to be done for the betterment of the National Highway Network in India. The NHAI is determined to improve the National Highway Network of our country.

India’s roads to be safer, greener under new NHAI plans
National highways could be much safer and clean by the end of this year, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) set to roll out an ‘incident management system’. Some of the aminities are here under:- 1. QUICK AMBULANCE SERVICE:- A larger four-bedded ambulance with medical recovery systems that can save lives within the ‘golden hour’ will be placed every 100 km of highway lengths in seven States to begin with: Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Every year, around 1.5 lakh people die on Indian roads. National highways accounted for 35% of total deaths on Indian roads and 29% of the total number of persons injured in road accidents in 2015, as per official statistics. 2. GREEN FUEL FACILITIY:- The NHAI has also mooted the inclusion of CNG fuel stations in the wayside amenities coming up along all highways. CNG-powered trucks or buses need a top-up after every 100 km, whereas CNG cars can travel up to 200 km before a refill is needed. The move could enable cars and trucks with green energy to travel beyond city limits. 3. TOLL FOR FASTag VEHICLES:- NHAI announced that all toll plazas will have electronic toll collection facility with at least one lane dedicated to vehicles with electronic tag device, known as FASTags, beginning September 1. It has also announced all toll plaza planes will be RFID [Radio-frequency identification] tags-enabled by October 31.
