Friends? Never. Pt.19 (Ellie Williams x reader)

SYNOPSIS: You and Ellie had been bitter enemies for years now but before that you were best friends. You had always planned to be roommates one day but when that becomes a reality the situation isn't exactly how you both imagined it.

It had been a week since you and Ellie had started your new jobs and the group that you were training was making progress, their aim was improving and their ability to fight was ten times better than it had been when they started. Even Amber had begun to improve and take your advice without challenging you at every step of the way. Clem was thriving at school, and you looked forward to hearing her ramblings of the day more than anything.

The group was doing shooting practise and you watched quietly as Ellie walked around the group inspecting their stances and their handling of the gun. She had been short-tempered today and it puzzled you but you brushed it off anyway. She had made Harvey and Mike do drills when she caught them messing about instead of sparring but not before she bit both their heads off harshly enough that they had been silent up until now. The sight amused you but you were confused because she was never like this with them. Amber had asked her to help her get more power into her punches and you both saw straight through it, you had to give it to the girl, she was persistent. Even after it being revealed that you and Ellie were together and even after they had walked in on Ellie kissing your cheek eliciting whoops and cheers from them all, she was still hopelessly flirting with Ellie which often gave you both a laugh at home.

“You’re not tensing your body enough and your movements are too slow. Keep your body rigid and speed up. I’ve already told you this.” She snapped at Amber.

“But-”

“Hey can you come here?” She had called over to you, you approaching slightly confused as was Amber until Ellie put her hands on your hips and spun you around to face away from her as she squeezed at the soft of them. “Throw a punch.” She whispered in your ear and the intimacy made your body tingly, this wasn’t like any of the usual demonstrations she had done with you, there was something different about it though you couldn’t quite put your finger on what it was that was making you feel strange. You threw a punch as she gripped onto your hips, her hands squeezing impossibly tighter, not to stop your hips from moving, she knew they wouldn’t but she savoured the feel of them in her hands anyway. “See how my hands didn’t move, you’re not tensing so you lose the power.”

“Can you try that with me? I just feel like I won’t be able to tell a difference unless I know how its supposed to feel.” She smiled coyly as your eyebrows quirked in disbelief at the audacity of her.

“Can you deal with her please?” Ellie sighed as she stormed off to go watch another pair, you don’t miss the dejected expression on Amber’s face causing you to roll your eyes as you take your place behind her.

“Do you actually want help or were you just trying to get my girlfriend to touch you?” Her mouth falls open at your harsh tone and she shakes her head as Maisie watches in amusement.

“N-no I actually want help.”

“Good.” You gripped onto her hips as you watched Ellie who was a picture of frustration. “Throw a punch.” You held onto her as firmly as possible as she threw the punch and then let go. “Did that feel different?”

“Yeah I think I understand now, thanks.” You nod and walk off back to your original position.

After that as you watched Ellie snap at George while he was aiming his gun you realised you needed to figure out what was going on.

“How many times do I have to tell you your feet are meant to be shoulder-width apart? Do you not know what that means? Do you not know what fucking shoulders are? I’m asking you a question so answer me.” She got in his face and you rushed over to intervene as you dragged her away from the group.

“You need to chill the fuck out.” She huffs and rolls her eyes. “I’m gonna give them a talk about knives because its long overdue and you can just stand and be quiet okay? You’re gonna get bollocked by Maria so wind your neck in.” You call everyone over and have them sit down so you can talk about knives and explain the importance of them. “Right guys, you’ve practised with guns and you are getting better, still a ways to go but we’ve already seen a lot of improvement but it’s super important you don’t forget the usefulness of a knife. Knives are so underrated but they are so good because as long as you keep hold of it, you can use it over and over again but the main reason they are so good is because they are silent. If you are out on patrol and you encounter one infected and you decide to shoot it, the sound of that gunshot could attract a whole horde towards you. So, that being said, use your knife as your first resort and your gun as your last.” You walk over to where all the weapons are stored and brandish a five-inch knife. “This knife is only five-inches-”

“Oh come on don’t say only, five is a respectable length.” Harvey calls out as all the group laugh. Ellie goes to step forward with a look that could kill but you hold her bicep hard enough that your knuckles go white as you keep her in place.

“Thank you so much for sharing that information with us Harvey, that makes want I’m about to say even funnier because it’s not the size of the knife that matters, it’s how you use it.” They all whoop and cheer as you chuckle along while glancing at Ellie that didn’t even crack a smile as she sneered at them. “Once again, the neck is a vulnerable point. I want you all to find your pulse on your neck for me.” They all put two fingers on their neck to find their pulse and you do the same to Ellie noticing how her cheeks redden and she fidgets slightly. “Where you can feel your pulse, that is the carotid artery, you hit that and someone will bleed out in seconds. You need to get good at being able to aim your knives for the vulnerable parts of the body as a reflex. I’ll show you.” You take your knife and press it to Ellie’s neck where you know the artery is just from muscle memory, the knife isn’t pressing into her neck hard but she does gulp as her eyes flicker from the group to you and she bites her lip subtly, the blush never fading from her cheeks. “Ellie, put your fingers where your pulse is, please.” She does that and when her fingers are right below where your knife sat, you mentally pat yourself on the back. “You slash at that or actually stab someone there and you might’ve just saved your life, this does go for infected as well so keep that in mind. I want you to get in pairs and practise what me and Ellie just did, hold the knife up to the other person’s neck, not hard, seriously, and then let them find their pulse and see how close you are. First person to get it spot on doesn’t have to do drills at the end of today!” They all rush towards the knives and start practising. “Do not rush because someone will die, this is important, be adults about this.” You add before walking off with Ellie. “What the fuck is going on with you today? Are you ill? You’re all red and grumpy and it’s scaring me.”

“Babe I need to fuck so bad.”

“Oh my god.” Your tone is a mixture of disappointment and amusement. “That’s why you’ve had a stick up your ass all day? Because you’re horny? You are unbelievable.” You can’t help the giggle that erupts from you as she rolls her eyes and huffs at your amusement at her suffering. “Fine, we can fuck tonight but we have to be super quiet because of Clem.”

“Oh my god babe you aren’t gonna know what hit you. I love you so much, thank you thank you thank you.” She steps towards you and reaches her hands out to your cheeks but you push them away gently with a smile as you flick your eyes towards the group that paid you no attention. She rolls her eyes before slyly grabbing your hand and pressing a sweet kiss to the back of it before looking over your shoulder and smiling at the lack of eyes on you both. It felt strange to sneak around but it excited you both more than you ever expected.

You both watched as the group continued trying to find each other’s pulse’s until you heard a triumphant cheer from Amber as she jumped around. “I got it! I got it! I got her pulse!”

“Congrats Amber, you now know how to kill someone quickly.” You deadpan.

“Oh come on you were the one that made it a competition.” Ellie reasons with you as she smirks. “Amber! Lucky you. No drills for you today!” She smiles properly for the first time all day and everyone shares questioning looks at her sudden change in demeanour, you barely manage to hide your giggle as Amber continues jumping around and shoving it in everyone’s faces that she won. It all went quiet as Joel wondered in.

“Hey kiddo!” He says to Ellie as he reaches you both.

“Joel! They aren’t gonna fear me if you call me kiddo.”

“They ain’t gonna fear you either way.” He chirps with a teasing grin.

“I dunno Joel, they were shitting themselves today when she lost her shit at them.”

“Yeah but I bet you scare the shit outta them all the time.” You nod your head in agreement as Ellie glares at you both.

“Well that’s only because you got to deck Harvey on their first day.” She near-enough whines.

“Shouldn’t have frozen and made me do all the talking then huh?” You smile sweetly as she huffs, you notice the group all quietly making their way over to the three of you, curious as to what you were all speaking about, nosy, you thought.

“Guys if you wanna talk about a good shot, you gotta talk about this guy. He taught me everything I know.” Joel chuckles at Ellie’s words and bows his head to hide the blush that graced his cheeks slightly.

“Is he your dad?” Harvey enquires causing Ellie to look like a deer in headlights as she glances from the group to Joel and back to the group.

“Errr... y-yeah, yes he is.” She flashes a tight-lipped smile at Joel who mirrors her expression before clearing his throat and squeezing her shoulder.

“Well I best get goin’, old and tired an’ all that. Best of luck to you all!” He smiles at them all and they all smile back, it’s sweet to you, their reaction to him. “Don’t work ‘em too hard eh.” He chortles before taking his leave as you turn to Ellie and grin at her, she notices your cheeky smile and scrunches her eyebrows in feigned confusion at you.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Youuuu said Joel’s your dad.” You tease.

“Oh whatever, he is kinda isn’t he?”

“I’m glad you see it that way, I agree though.” You each smile and you see an idea flash over her mind before she grabs your wrist and checks your watch as she refuses to wear one herself.

“Guys! We’re gonna call it a day early. Enjoy the rest of your day and we’ll see you back here-”

“9AM SHARP!” They all finish her sentence causing her to chuckle as she nods them off, ignoring your confused look.

“Come on! We’ve got an hour until Clem finishes school. Now we don’t have to be quiet.”

“Oh you genius you! Don’t think Maria’s gonna be too happy about us calling off training early to fuck though.”

“Well are you gonna tell her?”

“Not likely.” You both giggle as you practically jog back to your cabin, both ecstatic at your last-minute plans, Ellie fighting the urge to skip like a giddy child.

You were sitting on the sofa, watching a film as you gulped down your third glass of water when a frantic knock sounded at the door causing you to rush over to it and fling the door open.

“Oh fuck... Hi!” Dina is standing at the door, tears pouring down her cheeks despite her attempts to hurriedly wipe them away. “Sorry, er- is Ellie home?”

“No she’s picking up Clem, come inside, what’s going on?”

“No no it’s okay, I’m being stupid anyway, can you just tell Ellie I need to talk to her please?”

“Dina come inside and sit down for a sec, Ellie won’t be long anyway.” She takes a deep, shaky breath before nodding and walking inside, refusing to meet your worried eyes. You usher her over to the sofa as she desperately tries to stop the sobs that weren’t slowing down even for a second. “What’s going on? Are you okay? Is Jesse okay?”

“Yeah, yeah he’s fine, I’m fine, I- I just...” She chokes out another sob as her face falls into her hands, you rub her back until she calms enough to speak. “I- I think I’m pregnant.”

“Oh.” She dryly chuckles and you realise that was not the best reaction. “This is gonna sound silly but how do you feel about it?”

“It doesn’t sound silly, I’m being silly. I’m not even upset I don’t know why the fuck I’m crying.”

“Well I’m sure it’s all very overwhelming, you’re allowed to have mixed feelings about it.”

“Thank you, it’s not that I’m upset and I’m not worried about how Jesse will react, he’s basically born to be a dad but what if I’m not born to be a mom? “How has it been with Clem anyway? You and Ellie are basically my experts on parenting which is a scary thought.” That makes you chuckle.

“You’re telling me. D, they’re the fucking best. Clem is the sweetest kid I have ever met, I can be in the foulest mood and I see her face and all of a sudden it’s gone. The other day I was on my period and I felt like shit, like I was laying in Ellie’s bed crying because my cramps were so bad and she just waltzes in, climbs in the bed with me and tells me a shitty joke that she obviously got from Ellie and I could barely feel the cramps anymore because I was laughing so hard. Seeing Ellie with her too, I could watch them all day long, Clem is basically a carbon copy of Ellie and I swear it’s the best entertainment around. I fucking love having Clem and you are gonna love having that little one too.”

“Oh that is so sweet, you have made me feel so much better...” She trails off before giggling. “What was the joke?”

“What is the downside of eating a clock?” You pause as she thinks for a moment before shrugging her shoulders in defeat. “It’s time-consuming.” You both erupt into laughter as you clutch your stomach, tears sprouting in your eyes.

“Oh my god that is awful but so Ellie.”

“I know.” You both calm down and Dina smiles at you appreciatively before the door slams open, revealing an out-of-breath Clem bursting into the hallway.

“Hey you so cheated!” Ellie’s voice booms through the house.

“Nuh uh. You’re just slow!” Clem replies defensively before she spots you in the living room and comes bounding towards you, jumping onto you and wrapping her small arms around your neck. “Mommyyyy! I missed you. I beat Ellie in our race!”

“Oh did you now? I am not surprised one bit and I missed you so much more baby, seriously I missed your cute little face since we dropped you off this morning.” She giggles before turning to Dina as she rests her head on your shoulder.

“Hi Dina! Are you okay?” She enquires noticing the wet sheen of her cheeks and her puffy eyes.

“Oh yeah I am all good sweetie. Your mommy here just told me one of your jokes and I laughed so hard I cried!”

“Which one! Which one!?”

“The clock one.”

“That’s one of my favourites.” Clem yawns as she finishes her sentence.

“Mine too.” Dina agrees as Ellie walks into the room, rosy cheeked with a confused look on her face as she makes eye contact with Dina.

“Hey D, you okay?”

“Oh yeah, yeah I’m fine.”

“Er me and Clem will give you two a minute alone.” You beam before letting Clem clamber off you and leading her out of the room and towards the garden, kissing Ellie hello quickly as you pass her.

You and Clem sit in the afternoon sun as she tells you all about her day down to every last detail and you were enthralled the entire time, you could listen to her ramble on for hours and hours, for a lifetime even, which is good because that’s how things seemed to be going, a quiet moment always interrupted by the welcome chatter of either Ellie or Clem, often both.

After fifteen minutes Ellie walks outside coming to sit beside you as she kisses your cheek and whispers a small ‘hey’.

“Is Dina gone?”

“Yeah she’s uh- she's gonna go home and talk to Jesse.”

“Probably best, wow right?”

“Wow isn’t even the word, holy fuck.” You don’t even condemn her lude language in front of Clem anymore as it seems to only spur her on further.

“I’m happy for them though, they’re gonna be amazing.”

“Oh yeah for sure. She kept going on about how they’re so young and it made me realise we are all just kids doing our best for littler kids, you know?”

“Oh I know. Isn’t it the best though?”

“Wouldn’t change it for the world.” She beams at you and you rest your head on her shoulder as you watch Clem who was dancing around to music only she could hear, she was so perfect, you’d do anything to be the best for her.

putting this here more for myself than anything. i wanna be able to look back at it in a year and see how its changed. explanations for each section under the cut

ship i loved at first sight: tara x piper. i don't know what the ship name is. taper? pira? pira seems nicer lol. anyway, tara used to be my favourite brawler (and is still up there in my top 5) and i think the first time i saw tara x piper fanart was on reddit. it was by Xpyray and i swear to god ive never fallen in love with a ship faster. their art is so fucking good and they dont rlly draw brawl stuff anymore but i still follow them cuz their art is so so so pretty (please go follow them if youre reading this). anyway so yeah thats how tara x piper became my fav ship.

ships i initially didn't like: rico x piper, shelly x colt imma be fr at the start i didn't really Get these ships. but after watching some of the official animations and learning more of the lore, i started to appreciate these ships more. i don't love them or anything but they can be cute

ships i don't like anymore: sandy x nita, leon x jessie, sandy x leon there is no real reason for this other than the fact that i simply stopped liking them as i grew up. as i was making this i realised that when i was younger i used to like the ships with the kids/teens more, but now i'm 17 and i'm just not interested in them anymore. i guess thats what happens when you grow up lol. these ships are still cute, but i just don't engage with them anymore

favourite popular ships: mandy x chester, fang x buster so a bit of background, i actually quit brawl stars for a while, i think after the gale brawl pass. i dont really remember why, but its probably because i just got bored of the game lol. i think that also played into why i'm no longer interested in the same ships as before. anyway, i came back this year during the bizarre circus brawl pass and accidentally fell in love with these two ships. honestly, i'm not even entirely sure why i fell in love with these two ships in particular. chester definitely caught my eye when i came back to the game because a) i love clowns b) i love a good troll c) i love the random XD energy chester has and d) he has super interesting & fun game mechanics. i have no interest in mandy really but then i saw One suggestive mandy x chester fanart that went hard af and suddenly i was on board lmao. on the other hand fang and buster were two characters that i took some time to fall in love with, but now they're my favourites lol it's so strange. i really don't know how it happened.

favourite rarepair: amber x maisie i was looking at a diagram of all the trios so far because i was brainstorming ideas for who to include in a fanfic and as i was looking at it, suddenly it Clicked in my mind that amber x maisie would go hard af. like think about it. overconfident fire entertainer who gets so swept up in performances that she forgets about safety x safety coordinator with a fire extinguisher for an arm who secretly likes being in dangerous situations? come on!!!! im surprised more people havent thought of this pairing cuz as soon as it clicked for me it seemed like such an obvious pairing to do. but then again they've never interacted in any animation/promo material/etc so i guess it's not a pair people would just think of without prompting. but it's so fucking good!!!! more people need to get in on this ship.

controversial ship: none here's the thing. i don't know any controversial ships that i can see myself shipping. the most controversial one i know is probably edgar x colette but i see them as siblings so i don't ship it nor do i engage with fanart of them. edgar and colette ships in general are probably controversial seeing as both of them don't have canon ages and it's vague enough that people are always talking about whether they're adults or minors. but i personally see both of them as older teens so i don't ship them with anyone. (to me, they're too old to hang out with the kid brawlers but also too young to hang out with the adult brawlers. it's weird because there's no other brawlers where i see them as teens, so in my mind edgar and colette both have 0 shipping potential)

ships i want to become canon the most: amber x maisie, fang x buster they're my current favourite ships. what else to say.

comfort ship: fang x buster i think about them All the Fucking Time. lowkey i started to project on fang a bit just cuz i like him so much. i don't even know why or how i started liking him this much but he's my favourite brawler now and it's horrible. i think the seal in the coffin was @/giveittomegay's fanart of them. THEY'RE SO FUCKING CUTE. like omfg. confident, charismatic chinese immigrant who just arrived at starr park x introverted insecure white guy who doesn't know how to approach others. slowburn where they become closer through working at the cinema and buster realises he's fallen in love basically immediately but fang hasn't realised his own sexuality (has had crushes on girls before so always assumed he was straight) and doesn't realise he's in love with buster until maisie straight up tells him. fang's confidence means he jokingly flirts with buster all the time because he thinks it's funny to tease the guy and make him flustered but doesn't realise buster gets flustered because he likes fang. fang is fucking stupid. also, i think using fang x shelly here as a conflict plot point would be so good. like, fang seeing a pretty girl and approaching her, flirting with her, etc. i like to think fang is dense as fuck and would genuinely believe he's in love with shelly despite buster occupying 90% of his thoughts because his thought process would be something along the lines of "oh, i just think about him a lot cuz he's my best friend, i'm sure this is all regular, normal bff things". and buster just fucking dying inside but not saying anything because he thinks it's none of his business and he shouldn't interfere in fang's love life. MAISIE WATCHING ALL THIS HAPPEN AND WANTING TO MURDER BOTH OF THEM FOR BEING SO DENSE. like ohhhhhh my god there is so much potential here it's fucking insane. side note: fang doesn't have anything against gay people. i like to think maisie x amber comes way before fang x buster, so fang knows gay people exist and like he is perfectly fine and comfortable being around them, he's just so stupidly dense that he doesn't realise HE is gay (or more specifically bi). he also assumes buster is straight because default sexuality and whenever fang makes jokes based on this assumption buster never corrects him. because buster is a pussy. god. i want to write this fanfic so bad but i'm so fucking bad at writing dialogue it's insane.

ships that deserve more attention: amber x maisie, brock x bibi, barley x bull, max x janet LET ME COOK HERE OKAY. amber x maisie i already explained above. brock x bibi (i call them bibrock) is because it's noted in bibi's bio that she's secretly a huge nerd and i think it would be super cute for her to have a bf who she can indulge in nerdy and geeky shit with. to me they're both massive comic book fans who become close by playing all the superhero video games together before branching out to other games. they're console gamers btw and they get SUPER competitive whenever they're playing against each other. but they also do play coop games where they work together. usually brock is the one who does a lot of theorycrafting and tries to minmax his grind so he can get all the resources in the most optimal and time efficient way possible, whereas bibi prefers just going into fights and wrecking havoc lol. barley x bull is because they're both restaurant owners/servers (barley has his bar, bull has his diner) and i think they would bond over shitty customers and interesting food/drink recipes. they're both also familiar with having fights break out in their establishment and are fully capable of shutting fights down, even if it means getting their hands dirty. they think they're on opposite ends of the spectrum but they're actually more similar than they realise. for sure a very slowburn romance (especially because i think bull would be denial about liking a fucking robot lmfao) max x janet is because they're both celebrity entertainers. yeah, that's it. no but seriously i see max as someone who puts up an outgoing persona in public and is generally a very hyper, high energy person but at the same time, she tends to keep people at a distance because she's scared of intimacy. before janet, her closest friends are surge and meg. surge kind of Knows something is up with her because every time he tried to ask about her past she clammed up and gave noncommittal responses. he worries about her but doesn't know what to do about it so he just tries to make her happy in the present. meg is a kid so she doesn't realise anything is wrong lol. hanging out with meg and surge makes max happy and she considers them family, but she still has a wall up around her true self. janet is the one who is finally able to help max come out of her shell and address her past trauma. it also helps that max thinks janet is very pretty and desperately wants to kiss her. this is canon btw don't question me.

LA VIE EN ROSE… trent alexander-arnold

part five

trent buys white roses every week in maisie's flower shop, becoming her favourite customer.

trent returns to the belrose boutique a week later with a heavy heart. the bell rings, and the doors open. maisie looks up just in time to see him approaching. she is surprised to observe the tired look on his face and the dark circles underneath his sweet face. the man is still stunning to her, except that he looks exhausted, so much so that he doesn't even crack a smile at the girl once he is at the counter.

almost automatically, maisie takes notice of his condition and in a small voice says, "hi?" it's obvious that something is wrong today, "is everything okay?

he taps his feet compulsively, or sways on them, staring into space, without seeming to have heard a word the young woman has asked him. only when she repeats her question, finally meeting his amber eyes, does trent seem to come out of his torpor. frantically, he passes his hand over his eyes as if he wants to wake up from a bad dream.

"i'm fine," but as soon as he says it, he starts scratching the back of his neck and biting his lips, a sign that he's panicking. when trent doesn't return the question, maisie thinks that something is really strange this morning.

although his lie is obvious, the girl just nods without insisting; she wouldn't want to make him feel uncomfortable. in his eyes, she looks for any hint of a glimmer that he's just dealing with sleep deprivation, yet, she finds nothing.

"your three weeks away went well?" maisie asks to fill in the blank, but he simply shrugs with a faraway look.

he mutters, "could have been better."

understanding that she won't get anything more out of him now, she keeps quiet. a silence filled with unspoken words floats around them and she questions him gently with her gaze, but he doesn't care, his is fixed on an imaginary point behind her back. straight as a lamp post, trent seems to be waiting for something, but maisie can't figure out what.

to fill the lack of conversation that is becoming heavy on her shoulders, the young woman clears her throat and announces, "a bouquet of white roses?

the boy's bruised little heart pinches at the word but pretending it's nothing, he nods, having no other choice. when he starts tapping his foot in a hurry, maisie precipitates to finish the bouquet —he seems to want to get out of there as quickly as possible.

once he's cashed in and the white roses are in hand, he half mutters a 'goodbye' and pivots on his feet. maisie holds a disappointed breath and thinks back to the flowers she received the other morning. from the man's reaction, she is now sure that they didn't come from him, adding to the unsolved mystery.

however, the thought fades when, with his hand on the door handle, he hesitates to lower it. closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, supposedly to give him courage, trent finally turns back to maisie. with hope in his eyes, he raises his voice, "did you get my flowers?" his heart is pounding in his chest and he's not sure if he can still stand, panting and terrified of her answer.

a wave of realisation washes over maisie and her mouth twists in all directions as she searches for words, "it was you," she breathed out with a smile. all those weeks of searching and in the end, her instincts and grandmother were right.

"i mean," it doesn't take long for the boy's usual tic to resurface and he begins to frantically scratch the back of his neck, "it was pretty obvious, right?"

but maisie doesn't answer. she drops back onto her stool and trent is greeted with nothing but a confused look; the girl has probably never frowned so much in her life.

"i don't understand," her big chocolate eyes look up at the man's and it's his turn to be confused.

he takes a few steps in her direction shyly, "it's pretty simple to understand," trent has trouble expressing his feelings out loud, that's why he went through the alternative of the bouquet. maisie is therefore giving him a hard time. "you're the one who explained the meaning of the bouquet to me, well," he clears his throat, embarrassed, "its last, meaning."

but maisie shakes her head. she understood very well why the boy had given her the bouquet. nevertheless, it is harder for her to register how he could have done it when he has been coming here for weeks to buy flowers for his girlfriend.

"it's not about that, trent. it's-i mean, who's ava?" she asks very seriously, almost solemnly.

"well, my mother? i don't see what she has to do with it—" trent answers but without much conviction, not seeing what the girl is getting at.

flabbergasted. maisie is so flabbergasted that she stops listening to his explanations. ava is his mother, not his girlfriend. all those times she held back from enjoying his company too much, when she shut herself off in the false belief that he was not single, come back to her mind and she feels herself capsizing backwards because the shock is so great.

"oh," the confused look on the boy's face as he watches her, she feels compelled to explain almost in a whisper, "i thought she was your girlfriend."

"oh," it's his turn to realize the quid pro quo they'd been sharing for a long time without knowing it, "i don't have a girlfriend," he resumes shaking his head and maisie nods hers; she'd already figured it out but hearing it from him makes it more real.

it's a second wave of realization on top of the first which washes over her and she can't keep it down, "you buy your mother flowers every week?" her tone is softened, so faint that trent thinks he can't hear for a split second.

with a simple nod, the man answers her question, and a smile is painted on the curve of maisie's lips tinted with a nice gloss. the young man is then forced to return it in a more shy way than usual, this time being the one who blushes.

she can't believe it: trent doesn't have a girlfriend and he buys his mother flowers every week —hard to find anyone more perfect than him.

"thank you for the bouquet, it was beautiful," maisie finally blurts out, not daring to look at him, and trent assures her that it's nothing, his hands stuffed in his pockets to hide their trembling.

a small silence settles in and maisie has no idea how to break it. fiddling with her fingers, she has to admit that she's been running away from the boy's gaze, which has been piercing her for the past few minutes. yet she can feel his eyes burning into her, swallowing her whole because they're so insistent, and she doesn't know where to put herself.

from behind the counter, she can hear his jerky breath and feel his stress. finally raising her head, she offers him her most beautiful and reassuring smile to try to escape the nervousness that seems to animate his features. this has the gift of making him lighten up a little, but she still observes his trembling foot against the ground.

"did you need anything else?" shyly, she tucks a strand of hair back into place as she asks him the question, and trent is so charmed by the movement that he can't answer her. yet, he needs a lot.

"yes, uh... i was thinking, uh, how do i put this... i could maybe, well, if you're okay with it, uhm—"

"do you want my number?" maisie takes the lead because she sees that trent is freaking out a bit.

nodding briskly, he is relieved that she has guessed what he wanted, but still feels his face flush at his inability to string three words together in front of her. now thinking about pulling his nervous hand out of his pocket to hand her his phone, trent's stress does not subside, on the contrary.

when his fingers brush against maisie's, the man thinks he's just forgotten his name and tries hard not to prolong the physical contact. he then watches her type some numbers into his contacts, swallowing because she's far too pretty to be real.

handing him back his phone, maisie declares with a gentle smile, "i sent myself a message so i could save your num—"

"go out with me, please," trent cuts her off with a breath of relief and he finally feels the air return to his lungs, which have been compressed since earlier by the stress the woman is procuring him. he's glad he finally found the courage to ask her out.

the young woman half freezes, slowly raising her head to where trent is standing awkwardly. still rubbing the back of his neck, he is visibly distressed, and she only wants one thing at this very moment: take him in her arms to calm his agitation.

"i mean... shit.... sorry, i misspoke, i—" trent apologizes but maisie can only smile at the adorable expression he puts on when he panics.

"okay!" the young woman probably exclaims too enthusiastically, but she doesn't care because trent has just asked her out on a date, and she can't believe it.

"oh okay," a nervous laugh escapes from between the boy's lips, "i didn't think it would be this easy, but great!" he exclaims too, and like two idiots caught in another world, they smile at each other until their zygomatic muscles ache.

after agreeing on the date, trent has to go. walking backwards, he waves to maisie who returns the greeting with a big laugh —she still can't believe it.

continuing to watch him through the storefront, the girl is surprised to see him being approached by two young teenagers who seem to be asking him something. when a phone is pulled out and trent poses beside them, maisie frowns violently.

the euphoria of the moment fades a little and she watches the boy's back disappear as he moves forward. confusion takes hold and she thinks that research is needed.

2️⃣3️⃣ BANGERS FROM 2023 🎶

I listened to a lot of music in 2023!!! I love music!! There was sooooo much new-to-me music that I found this year, especially since I really committed to listening more widely to k-pop.

BUT if I made a list of new-to-me music I enjoyed this year we would be here forever, so I've made a list of 23 songs that came out in 2023 that made my year, and that I wanted to share with people. Enjoy!!! (I stuck to one song per artist, with one exception.)

Commentary under the cut!

Memories, RIIZE – What can I say; they're my boys of 2023. This is probably not going to be their sound going forward but I'm so glad they put it out as their first ever full song, because it's the perfect boyband song and it hooked me from day one.

Baggy Jeans, NCT U – This is Thee song of 2023. I will entertain no arguments on that.

The Last One, Maisie Peters – This did the same thing to my brain this year that Taylor Swift's Long Live did to it in 2010 which I think says everything.

Angel Eyes, NCT 127 – Yes, I realize NCT 127 is most known for crazy anti-music. This is like... anti-anti-music. It's Doyoung Does Journey. It's perfect in every way and I love it so much.

Naked In Manhattan, Chappell Roan – I realize this technically came out as a single in 2022 but I didn't appreciate it then and when I was picking a song off The Rise & Fall Of A Midwestern Princess it had to be this one, for me.

get him back!, Olivia Rodrigo – Everyone loves it for a reason, the reason is because it rules.

Something To Believe In, Kesha – If you haven't listened to Kesha's album from this year do yourself a favor and go do so right now. It's discomfiting and gorgeous.

CAKE, KARD – I dunno why I thought KARD was going to be music for heterosexuals. It is not music for heterosexuals. Watch the dance practice to see a giant LA frat-adjacent boy serve cunt.

On My Youth (English Version), WayV – This whole album rules but this stands out to me as a really great song that works perfectly both in Chinese and in English. They really sell it and it slaps. Also, the dance challenge they did for it stands out as the most fun one I saw all year, which really has nothing to do with the song but made me follow them on Instagram and now I'm obsessed with them.

Paint The Town Red, Doja Cat – Another one where it's just like... The Masses Are Correct. It's great.

Good Enough, CHANYEOL – This song makes my entire body and brain relax.

Beautiful Liar, MONSTA X – Classic Monsta X, fun and exciting and interesting and cool as hell. Video rules. So grateful we got this before they all had to enlist this year.

Back for More (with Anitta), TOMORROW X TOGETHER – The squawk of outrage that I made when I watched this video for the first time and Kai was hot in it.........also it was on repeat for a solid 4 weeks. It's catchy, Anita's part is great, and it ruined my life a little.

Get it? Got it? Good (feat. Amber Liu), Jessica – A late addition that is on repeat as we speak. Proof that a good hook is magic, IMO.

I AM, IVE – I'm ashamed that it took seeing IVE in concert to realize how fucking great they are, but they are so great, and this entire album is so solid with this song as the glittering diamond in it.

Voice, JOOHONEY – This one also feels a bit like cheating because I actually heard it in 2022, in concert. But it came out this year on Jooheon's solo album, and it's just... so, so good, and it makes me feel so much.

God Of Music, SEVENTEEN – I went back and forth between this and Super, but in the end, this won out for sounding like a party in progress, and being the Seventeen song that made me really take a second look at them and promptly fall down the rabbit hole. It's so fucking good, and it's so fucking fun, and they deserve all the recognition they got this year.

TOPLINE (Feat. Tiger JK), Stray Kids – A very Stray Kids song, by Stray Kids. I think it's my favorite from them this year, though there's definitely competition. This is winning due to the amount that I sing along to it in my kitchen.

BOUNCY (K-HOT CHILLI PEPPERS), ATEEZ – ATEEZ are more my boys-in-law than my boys, but far be it from me to deny that BOUNCY is one of the songs of the year. I cannot put that shit on without dancing along.

One Kiss, Red Velvet – Chill Kill is a phenomenal album front to back, but this song stands out as soooo perfect. Throwback vibes but feels contemporary, great vocals, lots of fun.

Guilty, TAEMIN – Primarily I'm obsessed with the artistic choices Taemin made on this album, but even discounting that, this song is a masterpiece.

NO PROBLEM (Feat. Felix of Stray Kids), NAYEON – This is a light, fun, kind of soothing bop which, if it were anyone else who'd featured I'd have probably been like "why did you ruin it with a random feature", but somehow since it's Felix featured he just brightens it up even further. I love it.

Talk Saxy, RIIZE – Yeah, of course this was going to be the artist who got two. What can I say. I was skeptical when the title "Talk Saxy" dropped, and then was made to eat my words so thoroughly I am now obligated to talk up Talk Saxy every time RIIZE comes up for the rest of my life. A perfect boyband bop, goofily age appropriate song, great dance, great vocals, good boys. Made me so excited about their future and sealed the being obsessed with them deal. Hashtag Stan RIIZE.

currently listening to: currently nothing but always taylor swift, i still have not really taken the 1989 vault tracks off repeat. plus this year has introduced me to maisie peters and it has been a LONG time since i loved a new artist this much. the good witch is a flawless album (the deluxe edition is less flawless but still very very good)

currently working on: my sister @emmaswanned and i have been talking extensively about x-files/his dark materials au and i'm working on a fic along these lines but i don't know that i will post it on ao3 because most of the hdm au is elyse's au and i can only take credit for krycek's daemon. so this fic might just be for fun, which is also kind of nice because i don't have to worry about filling in the blanks of the details of what's happening and i can just focus on the fun stuff (making mulder and krycek kiss). i have a couple other x-files fics in the works and a Band of Brothers one i really ought to finish

current obsession: well. the x-files. and his dark materials. i never did finish reading those books when i was a kid (i read and loved the golden compass, but the subtle knife got waaaay too in-depth with the science and philosophy and i got bored, plus i don't really like when lyra goes to the "real world" AND i do not care about will - change my mind, pullman!) but i have wanted to finish watching the show for ages because the casting is so spot-on perfect, but the show does have its major flaws especially with regrd to how it handles daemons, so i want to read all the books before i finish the show. i have vague knowledge of what happens in the subtle knife but i have no IDEA what to expect from the amber spyglass. for all i know lyra kills god. who can say?

“As you bring the sword back around, you see yellow energy shimmer from the water around Fjord and it collects and runs up through him…You all watch as the runes pulse upon the Star Razor, the blade itself seems to almost extend an additional inch and a half. You watch as additional runes that previously were not visible on the blade begin to appear on the outer edge of the base of the blade…They pulse. Fjord’s yellow eyes flash…As the blade impacts and cuts through the body, you just see the swing. All the energy streaks through, and there’s a moment where it’s just calm and still in the darkness below.

Avantika doesn’t react.

On the Beach by Bear McCreary (For the first time in ages, a lead on Sabian presents itself, and with a great deal of consideration he takes it. Kotho is a little strange—cagey even—but her devotion to seeing through a decade old bounty is enough to make him hand over 200 gold. If anything comes of it, he’ll have to wait and see. Perhaps this is just another manifestation of the faith he is learning to cultivate.)

Prelude by The Oh Hellos (The Nascent Nine Sided Tower. Fjord has never had a permanent home, and while the tower doesn’t always exist in the tangible sense, the love behind it feels as solid and permanent as the ocean he sails upon.)

Dancing around a dance hall in the heart of Rexxentrum, Fjord and Jester dance around their own feelings for each other. And if the unicorn is a bit silly, so what. He’d make himself look silly a million times if it makes her happy. That has always been enough for him.)

In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg (A building sense of dread in the remote outpost of Balenpost, culminating in the sudden and unexpected death of Lady Vess Derogna. He does his best to improvise a sense of ease in the moment, something to keep the group moving forward with no suspicion from their guide, but the sickening unease lingers as they head out in the frozen landscape.)

Tend Your Flock by The Dear Hunter (The Mighty Nein finally find Lucien and the Tombtakers. An inverted bastardization of the pack of weirdos from the circus so long ago. It is eerie and uncanny to see a friend back from the dead, but no longer a friend at all. Simply the vessel that looks like him, filled with something altogether familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. A tense truce is reached as both parties decide, if not to work together, to at least not work against each other for the time being.)

7 Hours Ago by Honeywater (Fjord and Jester check in with each other in the wake of everything that has happened since arriving in Eiselcross, and in doing so continue to dance around these feelings they both share. Novels by Rusty Clanton (In the wake their first kiss, Fjord and Jester share an intimate moment on night watch. Eiselcross is cold and unforgiving, and Lucien even more so, but the two of them continue to carve out moments of tenderness for themselves. These public displays of affection are new to them both, but in the moment something clicks, as if it were always meant to be. Someday they won’t have to wait for each other. Someday this will all be simple. But for now, in this moment, they are warm and her head fits perfect on his shoulder.)

Howling Fjord from World of Warcraft (It is unsettlingly in its familiarity, as Fjord watches Beau and Caleb shoot up from their nightmares in the same way he once did when dreaming of being crushed and drowned. And like those dreams, a mark is left behind in the form of a red eye on both of them. The Mighty Nein have dealt with much in short span of time, but this—this is something new and altogether terrifying in its unpredictability. The only way out is through though, and understanding won’t be found sitting around in the tower waiting for it. So they set off again.)

Rise of the Vrykul from World of Warcraft (Another old enemy returns, this time in the form of a white dragon hell bent on revenge. Gelidon returns, almost takes Beau with him, and highlights again just how little they can trust Lucien and the Tombtakers.)
