hello followers i need some advice esp if anyone here works as a customer service rep. i've always been able to resolve my issues even when they're technically outside policy by being nicey but insistent, asking to be transferred, etc. it's never a bad time for me or the phone reps, it just requires a while lot of patience and the ability to remain calm and empathetic. however i'm dealing with a broken headset that's still within warranty, got it a year ago from the razer storefront on amazon but it was fulfilled by a third party seller which i'm just finding out. both amazon and razer hit me with a new avoidance technique that i can't figure out how to bypass: the team that can fix my issue (a refund, a replacement) is not available to talk on the phone; they will open a case and i can communicate through email with them "they'll get back to you in 24-48 hours". obviously this just hits a wall where i get the script for "we can't help you" through email over and over again which is sooo upsetting

usually asking to be transferred to someone who can bypass the policy works eventually but it seems they've gotten really tight on the "sorry everyone else you can talk to has the same permissions i do." it feels like i've finally been defeated by Big Corp now that i can't seem to reach anyone by phone who could actually get me a refund/replacement because "hey can you transfer me to someone who can help with this" no longer works and completely shuts down the ability to connect human being to human being and i don't want to go all "can i speak to your manager" because i'm sure that's not gonna gain me any goodwill points. does anyone have any idea of how to get to the right person through clever schemes and jedi mind tricks ):

The Re-Opening Of Handmade Hearts

It’s been an icy hot minute since I wrote a proper update, but I won’t complicate this one. The update series started with the presence of a workspace and the first shop opening; the second post was about the progress and success so far; the third was almost a year later because so much had happened, and I’d moved, and the store was on standby, and I was getting married, usw.

I’ve since not only moved countries, but I’ve also moved my main storefront from Ko-Fi to the Artisans Cooperative. (But you’ll still find patterns on Ko-Fi.) Like I have from the start, I do the math and show my work in the description of each item listing in a breakdown of the price: In bullet list form, I state the material costs, the platform fees, the time I’ve estimate I could most efficiently take to complete one of each item (which will almost always be less time than it actually took), and the wage per hour that I’m paying myself. If you add it all up, it’ll equal the price in the listing — minus a tax based on your area that the marketplace adds automatically.

There are six fixed shipping prices based on size and location, with the least expensive being within Germany and the most expensive being anywhere outside the EU. I’ve got two different sizes of box, but I really should get me some envelopes and offer a cheaper no-tracking alternative for certain (very small, mostly not-yet-existing) items.

I’ve done the math, and I have made just shy of 370€ in earnings in the time I’ve had Handmade Hearts open. I haven’t been able to work since 2019, so that’s 370€ in earnings within the last five years.

Well, I have chronic depression, but I’ve managed to carve myself into an optimist; I’ve not had the chance to really grow yet as an indie seller, so having earned anything — not operated at a loss (at least within business expenses; general life expenses is another beast) — is a bright shining star to me.

My parter and I are waiting on job applications and government assistence. In the meantime, I’m hoping to gain more eyes and start making at least one sale every month in the middle and/or latter half of 2024.

I’ve yet to sell anything through the new storefront, so I’m trying to get more eyes on it. I’m considering opening a secondary storefront with Products With Love, a Germany-specific handmade marketplace, to get more eyes that won’t have to pay more than seven euros on shipping for any given thing.

Shipping is, unfortunately, not something I can do for free. To take a moment for personal politics: I really think mail should be one of those things governments work together to pay for and make free on the most basic level, like public infrustructure, roads and such. It shouldn’t cost $24 for me to send you a snake shaped neck pillow if you’re in the US.

That said, it does cost me 23€ (which is $24.53 as of writing this) to send you a snake shaped neck pillow right now. I want to emphasize that because it’s so common when shopping online to find something “underpriced” whose shipping is blown way up for profits, and I think sometimes it’s become habitual to assume that’s the case when shipping is over what Amazon would consider normal.

Another thing people do is including the shipping price within the price of the item to artificially remove shipping costs. That’s something I don’t do because A) I like transparency, and B) that would increase the platform fees you have to pay, increasing the overall price for no reason.

Ultimately, I hope that the way I do things helps people be more mindful of why things cost what they do.

I can’t give you any really good tips without more information on what specifically you’re struggling with, but I’m going to try and at least offer some suggestions for the issues you mentioned here. If you can let me know what in particular is causing you problems and how you’ve tried to deal so far, I am happy to offer what help I can.

Diagnosis

Congratulations on getting diagnosed! It can be a difficult fight, but you persevered and here you are. Welcome to the community; I hope we are all able to support you well.

Parents

Sometimes people think that a diagnosis gives us the problems, but sometimes they think naming the disorder eliminates them. It’s so weird; like, no, having the right label just tells me where to look for solutions that will *actually* help! I don’t know if that’s what’s going on with your parents, obviously, but it is a possibility.

I don’t know what kind of relationship you have with your parents, but it sounds like they aren’t really very safe for you. That really sucks. I don’t know how old you are, but I’m going to assume you are a minor. Do you have any adults in your life who are safe, who you can trust to support you?

Assuming that you have to continue living with your parents, I’ll offer a few suggestions for how to talk to them about the particular things you mentioned when I get to those things. For now, I just want to suggest that you approach them about the possibility of getting talk therapy/counselling. A good counsellor will be able to help you work out some of the things that are causing you difficulty in your relationship with your parents, and they aren’t allowed to discuss your sessions with your parents (or they shouldn’t be; do check their policies and the laws in your area to be sure).

Sensory Overload

Sensory processing stuff can be hard to manage because it’s all about how your brain handles things, so it’s invisible. If you can, I highly recommend taking note of what sends you into overload so that you can find ways to mitigate it. I have a sheet to help you figure this out up on the Actually ADHD web site (http://actuallyadhd.org), in the Resources section under Printables. I am working on turning all of my InfoSheets into fillable PDFs so that people don’t have to print them in order to use them.

Sitting Still

Sitting still can be really hard for us! It took me a while to realize that I am actually always moving some part of my body, and that is how I express hyperactivity. It’s not as blatant as my son’s hyperactivity; he is 7 years old and uses full-body movement to express it!

I don’t know what kind of options you have available to you, but you might look at getting a cushion that will let you sit mostly still while wiggling just a little bit. I’ll try to get an Amazon storefront set up this weekend and make sure to include this sort of thing in it.

If you’re finding that you’re mostly having trouble after a specific length of time—like, you can sit still for a while but then you get fidgety—try taking a bathroom break when you can’t sit still anymore. You don’t need to actually use the facilities, just go in and close the door, and then take some time to get a bunch of that energy out. (Tip: bring your phone and earphones in with you and dance to an awesome high-energy song.)

Another great thing that’s more proactive is to try and get regular exercise, especially cardio. Not only does this help your brain function better (not immediately; it’s more of a long-term investment thing), it helps get some of that energy out and gives you proprioceptive input (physical body sensations). Both of these can be contributing factors in physical hyperactivity.

Accommodations

As we all know, accommodations are most definitely not “special things”; they are necessary modifications to our environment and/or expectations that are based on the specific difficulties we have due to our disability. If you live in the US, appropriate accommodations are required to be provided at work and at school. (I’m pretty sure this is accurate; if anyone out there knows more than I do about the ADA, please feel free to chime in!)

I don’t think the ADA applies to your home life when you’re a minor (could be wrong!), but if you are in school and you do not have an IEP or a 504 plan, please talk to your school—either the counsellor or a trusted teacher—and ask for one. I have heard that a 504 plan is better for ADHDers; we do have some posts with that information here, too. Basically, if you need accommodations at school, you should have a plan in place and your teachers are legally required to follow that plan… and while your parents have to agree to the plan, they really need to be educated by your teachers on this since they obviously don’t care to learn on their own.

Medication

I’m so sorry that medication didn’t help. I want to check in about this briefly because there are a lot of misconceptions about medication and ADHD. So I’m going to address the most common ones here, just in case the information is helpful for you or for someone else reading this post.

Medication isn't going to make you not-ADHD. It just makes your ADHD easier to manage.

Medication usually has side effects; the main question is whether you're willing to put up with them.

There are a lot of different types of medication out there, so don't let anyone stop at just one. The odds are actually really good that there's something out there that will help.

Our main characters practice necromancy and travel from one planet to another at the call of their necromancer god, the emperor undying. the relationships are fraught, the viscera is plentiful, and the prose is phenomenal. what can i say that won’t spoil everything? all of the books in the series are great and only get better each time you read them, as they all have mysteries to unravel that are delightfully foreshadowed the entire way through.

If you are more of a sci-fi person and the fantasy aspect turns you off, I shall direct you to The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet, by Becky Chambers. https://bookshop.org/a/3530/9780062444134 This book is almost like taking a road trip through the universe, lol. Though dangers are real and present, the ensemble cast comes together as a supportive found family drifting along in outer space. I enjoy the world building we receive in bits and pieces--not only of how humans found their way to the stars, but the other species of people we meet out there. Also present is a nice queer relationship, as the icing on a spacefaring cake. ;3

Conversely, if you want your fantasy and no sci-fi, may I suggest The Dragon of Trelian by Michelle Knudson. https://bookshop.org/a/3530/9780763694548 Y’all know I’m weak to dragons so of course this sort of thing was coming. This book is the first in a trilogy, and follows two lead characters--the princess of a kingdom, and a mage’s apprentice. the two meet, become friends, and the princess lets the apprentice in on her little secret--she miiiiiight maybe have become psychically bonded to a baby dragon that is very quickly becoming Not So Baby. I really enjoy how this book series balances these two characters--neither of them become romantically invested in the other, but they ARE very important to each other and support and understand each other in a way that nobody else around them quite gets. they have very different personalities, very different worldviews, and very different desires, but they care each other, dammit. i love them.
