Hi there! I loved Angels Before Man so much! It's already one of my all-time favourite reads, and I'm so glad tiktok helped me discover it. I'm an aspiring writer myself, and realising angels before man was self-published really gave me hope that becoming an author is way more achievable without the barrier of being traditionally published. So i was wondering if you had any advice for people like myself on self-publishing and your experience with it?

Oh yeah, I think we're in a boom of indie books in general! There's so many good self-published books coming out, especially POC-centered and/or queer. There's also a really supportive community around self-publishing now that I don't think was there before. I definitely didn't think self-publishing was feasible until I saw the sort of stuff that Freydís Moon, Kellen Graves, and others were doing.

My biggest advice is not to do what I did skskks but anyway

If you want really actionable suggestions: don't publish through Ingram. Do either Amazon KDP or Draft2Digital, though I would personally recommend the latter. D2D take a cut of royalties, but they provide a free ISBN (I believe), and they make distribution really easy. You're going to want to invest in an editor (support freelancers!! I recommend my friend Quinton tbh) and a cover artist and/or designer. Also, you're going to need formatting software, or get someone (a.i. a designer) to do it for you; if you're not trying to turn self-publishing into a full career/hobby, then I would just ask someone to do it for you. Atticus is the most popular software, I think, though I used Vellum. (Alternatively, you could export into epub and paperback with Scrivener. Also, I think D2D can actually format it for you but I'm not sure.)

Yes, I'm aware this is quite a bit of upfront costs. It's a lot like starting a business. ABM was very much a passion project for me, so I accepted I would lose some money, but I've actually made my money back by a literal miracle ahsjkddsf I'm very thankful, but I'm definitely really lucky. This is a big risk! Financially and emotionally, so please keep that in mind.

By far, my biggest advice is to build relationships with other indie authors and indie readers. This is a really supportive space! We love to boost each other!! If you have more questions, don't hesitate to slide into my DMs tbh! I know I'm very busy but I can try to help or direct you to someone smarter than me :')

It’s something usual news about that the one,or the other anime gets official broadcast in India.It’s good that the products of hard working Japanese animators gets in many lands of the world..However I daresay that it’s been given too much of emphasis,about what anime gets in India.So let’s pay attention to a land severly misunderstood:Iran.

I'm from Iran, and I always read your answers on ANN. (Access to ANN is denied in Iran and i have to use proxy software to visit.) My country doesn't allow us to buy or sell anime and manga (because of Islamic issues, you know... naked girls, kissing, etc.), but there are many people here who watch anime and read manga. Just like other forbidden stuff in Iran (foreign music and movies) we have to illegally download them. It is so sad and annoying. Amazon and Ebay don't ship anything here because of US sanctions against Iran. Do you think someday it will be possible for us to have official anime and manga stuff? Does the anime and manga industry have any interest to be in Iran's market? Our currency is very weak against the US dollar. For example, most people earn only $300 per month. Does such a country with these difficulties have any reason to hope for involvement from the anime industry?

First of all, thank you for writing in. It's really, truly gratifying to know that even people in countries we've never anticipated read our site (and my column) and enjoy it. That really made my day. I'm printing your letter not just to answer your question, but also to show our other readers how tough it can REALLY be to be an anime fan when you're not lucky enough to live in a country that permits such things. Think you have it tough because you can't afford a premium Crunchyroll subscription, or a Blu-ray release isn't to your liking? THIS is worse. Way, way worse.

So anyway, to answer your question, I have to get a little bit into current politics, and to be honest I am not an expert in middle east policy or politics, so I'm going to tread very lightly here.

From what I can tell, there are three major things standing in the way of anime being freely and legally available in Iran. The first are the sanctions against the country. This not only makes it illegal for someone to export an anime disc or merchandise item to Iran from America, but from basically any country in the United Nations -- so that takes out the entire European Union, Japan, Korea, Canada, Australia, and nearly every other country with an organized anime industry of any size. Any attempt to do business with Iran in any way is basically a non-starter until those sanctions are lifted. The good news is that a recent nuclear non-proliferation treaty between Iran and the US that would significantly ease those sanctions has been reached, although whether or not it'll be enacted is currently a hot political debate. Regardless, tensions do seem to be easing a little bit, so there's some reason for hope here. When trade is possible, a country's economy tends to recover, and the value of its currency will slowly get back to a level at which it's possible to do business again. It'll take some time.

The second major barrier is the big national ban on international entertainment products that are in any way sexualized. This is a political issue in Iran with its government censoring what people can see, based on their interpretation of Islamic morals. As long as that's as strict as it currently is, there's simply no way for anime to get imported in any form without it getting cut down to nothing -- there's simply too much the current regime would find offensive. I'm not qualified to say whether there's any indication that the government will liberalize its censorship practices, but countries do change, and they do change fast. Not necessarily all censorship needs to be lifted before anime can find its way in, but internet filtering of mainstream anime websites like ANN, Crunchyroll and Daisuki needs to happen, if nothing else.

The last barrier is the speed of most people's internet connection. According to the data I've found, only Tehran has broadband connections over 2 Mbps, which are necessary for decent quality internet video. This is important, because physical media and merchandise can be confiscated and seized at the border, making any venture dealing with that stuff a non-starter. Legal streaming sites, however, can be operated overseas and simply grant access to Iranian customers. If internet censorship gets loosened up and bandwidth speeds improve just a little, suddenly it becomes possible to grant legal access to the entire nation. It will probably take some years and a lot of smart people to figure out how to make it work as a business, but it would be possible.

Those are a lot of very tough obstacles to overcome. They will take years, perhaps even a generation, to enact. But change can happen very fast. Huge chunks of Asia, from China to Vietnam to South Korea, opened up and transformed in a major way in the last few decades, and it's possible for Iran too. I want that for you, and I hope the politics of the world allow it to happen someday”.

All right I started reading (on audiobook) The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, and I've read this one before but my GOD.

Putting this behind a cut bc I'm mostly ranting for my own benefit.

So we have our lunar colony, it started as a penal colony a la Australia, and it's apparently a life sentence because your body can't take going back to Earth's gravity after only a few months (we will forgive this inaccuracy because this book was published in 1966, well before NASA's Twin Study with astronaut Scott Kelly spending a year in microgravity on the space station while his identical twin Mark Kelly stayed on Earth as a control). So we now have people on the moon who were born free, native Loonies, if you will.

But the Lunar Authority still runs everything, and the Warden is still in charge of stuff. And prices are getting rougher. You see, they mine ice on the moon, sell to Lunar Authority who then sells it back as water, collects sewage, then sells the sewage to farmers, who use it for their crops... because they're farming wheat on the moon, and sending it to Earth. But it's all exports, you see. Cheap to send to Earth (break out of the moon's gravity well and it's all "downhill") but expensive to send anything to the moon.

So, it's colonialism. The colonial power is stripping the colonized place and people of their resources with no regard for the quality of life or future of those people/land. Some of the explanation is obviously "well they're criminals so fuck 'em" but there are non-criminals on the moon, too.

So they have this meeting to discuss revolt, which has apparently happened a few times but never pans out, because Lunar Authority is the only game in town. And you know what they say they need? Do you know what their "all we need is this thing and we'll be fine" is???

A free market.

And once again I sit here shaking my head at Heinlein because NO, you DON'T want """"a free market"""" because you HAVE a free market right now.

Is it illegal to just sell your ice to the farmer directly? No. Is it illegal for the farmer to sell wheat back? No. Some people have their own power grids and so forth too. There's nothing stopping you from not doing business with Lunar Authority.

But but but they can't pay us, and if I have a cash crop I have to ship it to Earth and Lunar Authority controls the launch pad!

Right, because Lunar Authority has a monopoly. Here's a question for you. Anything stopping you from building your own launchpad? No? Then it's a free market my friend! No one is forcing you to do business with them!

It's just like how Amazon is the only fucking company that will deliver to some rural areas. No one is forcing you to do business with Amazon. It's not illegal to buy from anyone else. Hell, just start your own company! What's that? You don't have the resources and Amazon will just undercut you anyway? Well that's free market, baby!

Like, the contradiction of "in order for us to gain independence we will have to pool our resources and work together" and "so we can have a completely unregulated market with no one telling us what to do, I'm sure that no one will just assume Lunar Authority's position and pull the same shit" is wild to me. There is the contrast that the moon is very "wild west" so people get shoved out of airlocks fairly regularly, with I GUESS the implication that should anyone try to set up a monopoly they'd be eliminated, but like, that's fundamentally misunderstanding how monopolies get set up in the first place. As long as you have a capitalist system, you're going to get monopolies, and the only way to prevent that happening is putting rules in place that say you can't.

Anyway it's so fucking annoying reading Heinlein because of this stuff, like, you're so close but the "free market" you want is a well-regulated market, okay? As long as anyone is the only game in town you're going to get fucked. Unless you're running the game yourself.

But also hilariously our POV character is a mixed race man of color who's disabled, and the moon is EXPLICITLY extremely mixed. The one thing you can really say for Heinlein is that he's no white supremacist. He really deliberately made a multicultural community and kudos to him for that, especially in the sixties when the US was still in the thick of the civil rights movement.

In Brazil, Agribusiness Lobby and Far-Right Politicians Sow Climate Disinformation

Rural associations, media outlets, and digital channels provide a platform for scientists who espouse climate misinformation.

The year was 2016, then the hottest on record. Concerned by the impacts of global warming on soybean farming, Brazil’s then-agriculture minister, Blairo Maggi, invited the scientist Carlos Nobre to meet with the board of Amaggi, the minister’s family business and one of the country’s largest grain exporters. Nobre had been asked by Maggi to give a talk on how much scientists already knew about the potential impacts of climate change on agricultural production, with a particular focus on the Amazon region.

Nobre, one of Brazil’s most renowned climatologists and one of the foremost experts on the Amazon region, set about preparing for the job thoroughly. He talked to fellow researchers, poured over dozens of papers on the subject, and drew up the talk he would deliver to the board of soybean producers.

“I demonstrated that changes in climate could render the whole southern region of the Amazon and northern part of the Cerrado [where the company’s soybean plantations are located] practically impossible for the continuation of productive agriculture because of excess heat,” Nobre said.

The scientist explained how temperature highs above 40ºC (104ºF) could become commonplace in the region. “At these temperatures, the productivity of soybean crops is extremely low,” he said. He further warned those in attendance that climate change greatly speeds up the frequency of extreme weather events such as droughts, which were already being recorded in the region and were tending to become more serious with each passing event.

Upon wrapping up his talk and opening the floor to questions, Nobre was left surprised. “A number of people put their hands up and all spoke about how there were no such problems, that soybean crops’ productivity increases under higher temperatures—which is completely false—and that climate change is not taking place,” he told Agência Pública.

It was only some time after that the scientist came to understand the source of his audience’s disbelief. “All of those soybean producers had previously listened to the climate-denialists Luiz Carlos Molion and Ricardo Felício [who had also been invited to give a talk].”

Molion and Felício are two of Brazil’s foremost exponents of a small but vocal group with ties to the academic world who deny that the planet is heating up or that human activities are capable of causing such impacts. They also question the role of the Amazon rainforest in the distribution of rainfall in Brazil, the extent of the Amazonian forest fires, and even claim that deforestation has no impact on the climate.

For decades, figures long opposed to the scientific consensus such as Molion and Felício have had little prominence in public debate. This, however, has changed in recent years. On top of touring the country at the invitation of agribusiness associations to give talks and spread the myth that global warming does not exist, they have also been elevated to the status of experts by the Brazilian Congress’s influential bancada ruralista (rural lobby), whose members have even invited them to address the Senate’s foreign affairs and environment committees. They have also gained exposure on media platforms linked to agribusiness interests and far-right politicians.
