JOURNALISTIC CHOICES: Telling the Truth vs. "Bothsidesism"

Ben Raderstorf does a great job in this article discussing the dilemma modern journalism has in covering a lying, dangerous authoritarian like Donald Trump, without "appearing partisan." Raderstorf argues against bothsidesism, and in favor of good journalists just simply telling the truth.

[T]he best way for independent, fact-based media to win back the audiences they’re losing to polarization is to not chase them.... But rather, to double-down on independence, objectivity, and honesty. To report reality as it is and to let the chips fall where they may. To draw a hard distinction between the normal political jockeying of healthy democracy and actions that threaten our system of government.   Back in 2022, in response to questions from reporters about how to discern between those two things, we wrote a report on how experts understand threats to democracy: The Authoritarian Playbook: How reporters can contextualize and cover authoritarian threats as distinct from politics-as-usual.

Raderstorf also talks about how 21st century autocrats like Viktor Orbán (who is a role model for Trump) apply pressure in subtle ways to eventually "corrupt" journalism.

These days, many autocrats don’t just smash printing presses, throw reporters in jail, and be done with it. Often they pursue a more nuanced, and more insidious, strategy.   With a combination of intimidation, coercion, and financial manipulation, they slowly corrode the independence and autonomy of the press until it ceases to be a meaningful check on power. The media still exists; it’s just an empty shell, a useful facade.   Put differently, modern autocrats don’t crush journalism — they corrupt it.

Raderstorf mentions how the two journalistic outlets that Trump targeted most vehemently as president are the two that eventually replaced their leadership--and as a result, weakened their journalistic integrity.

In an article this week in the Columbia Journalism Review, my colleagues Ian Bassin... and Maximillian Potter ... dive into several case studies. They connect troubling dots suggesting that Donald Trump deployed the Orbán strategy in his first term to greater effect than many realize. [...] In their piece, Ian and Max explore the two major instances in Trump’s first term when he attempted to wield the powers of the presidency against journalists for coverage he didn’t like. First, by threatening to block a proposed merger between CNN’s parent company, Time Warner, and AT&T. Second, by looking to raise shipping rates on Amazon, whose owner, Jeff Bezos, also owns the Washington Post.  In both cases, Trump mostly failed to carry out his threats. But… it’s also true that both CNN and the Post subsequently went through high-profile leadership shakeups at least partly in response to Trump. For CNN, this was Chris Licht’s short-lived tenure and disastrous efforts to make the network “more neutral.” For the Post, it was Bezos installing a new publisher: “Will Lewis, a former Rupert Murdoch executive who has spent most of his career in right-wing media.” [...] Timothy Snyder writes in On Tyranny that autocratic leaders often succeed simply because the media, business leaders, and civil society look ahead to possible repression and move preemptively towards self-preservation. Why Rondônia is the state that kills the most women in Brazil

The state has the highest femicide rate in the country, almost triple the national average. Lack of police preparation, impunity and the rise of fundamentalist churches contribute to the scenario, experts point out.

It's been three months since Carla* (whose name was changed by the report) has seen her children. The last time she tried, on the eve of Mother's Day, she was stabbed by her ex-husband in front of her house. The blows left marks on the chest, arms and hands. The attacker only stopped because a motorcycle courier passing by on the street caught him, and Carla managed to escape.

"He tried to take out my eye and break my neck," Carla tells DW. "He just didn't kill me because he didn't have a gun," says the victim over the phone.

In order to live, Carla, 34 years old, hid. She had been married since she was 18 to her attacker, who was always jealous. The problem escalated when she passed a public exam and went abroad for training. That's when she discovered that she was being spied on through an app secretly installed on her cell phone by her husband.

The attempted femicide is being investigated by the Civil Police of Rondônia, where the crime occurred. The state has the highest femicide rate in Brazil: there were 3.1 victims per 100,000 inhabitants in 2022. The number is more than double the national average, which was 1.4, according to data from the Brazilian Public Security Yearbook.

The state is also the champion in female homicides – the rate was 11.2 victims per 100 thousand inhabitants, almost four times above the country's average (3.9).

"Here, as in every society, we still live in a very deep-rooted, very strong system of patriarchy, with sexist ideologies. This contributes to the objectification and subjugation of women", comments Débora Machado, from the Rondônia Public Defender's Office, who followed Carla's case.

Absence and unpreparedness of the State

Studies on femicide classify this crime as the "final part" of a process of worsening violence, marked by terror, disregard, or discrimination against the condition of women. Considered heinous by Law No. 13,104, of 2015, femicide is preventable: public prevention, protection, and reception policies are identified as efficient tools.

"The woman reports it and she often has nowhere to go. Even when there is a protective measure given by the courts, the aggressor does not stop pursuing the woman because he imagines that the police will not arrive in time to prevent the crime. And they indeed don't arrive", analyzes Benedita Nascimento, activist and founding member of the Popular Women's Forum and the Articulated Movement of Amazon Women, in Rondônia.

For Nascimento, who works in the network to combat domestic violence in the capital Porto Velho, the commitment of delegates and prosecutors is remarkable, but the lack of personnel helps explain the high rate of femicide.

"There is a service deficit in the area of public security. The women's police stations do not have the necessary equipment, technical staff, and sufficient police officers. That is why women are dying", he explains, pointing out that there are eight specialized police stations for all 52 municipalities in Rondônia.

When questioned, the state Public Security Secretariat did not respond.

In addition to the absence of the state, Nascimento sees several sectors of society being unprepared to face the serious scenario. "I'm talking about schools, basic health units, family doctor teams, leaders in churches who are not prepared to read the signs of a woman, a family, who lives in a situation of violence. We have a particular action of social movements, but the rest is missing", he states.

Churches and oppression of women

With a critical look at society's behavior, Marcia Oliveira, professor at the Federal University of Roraima (Federal University of Roraima - UFRR) and researcher at the Migration Observatory in Rondônia, linked to the Federal University of Rondônia (UNIR), has been studying the context of the production of this violence for years.

"It has been being built. In the Amazon, historically, there has been a lot of violence in the formation of the states themselves. It is a continuous process of violation of human rights, violence against indigenous people, the poorest. A state of violence is being created", highlights Oliveira in interview with DW.

The growth in the political field of the conservative right, argues Oliveira, would have an influence in causing the silencing of women, especially in social movements, and promoting the repression of female political participation in political frameworks.

Another point would have to do with the expansion of evangelical churches in the region. "Honour killing seems more acceptable in Rondônia and other states in the North, such as Roraima. This has to do with the increase in fundamentalist religions, in which women are treated with a lot of submission, with a lot of subjugation", argues Oliveira, a doctor in Society and Culture in the Amazon by the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM).

A recent survey signed by Victor Araújo, a researcher associated with the Center for Metropolis Studies, with headquarters at the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (Cebrap), showed that in 2019, 6,356 evangelical churches were opened in Brazil – an average of 17 new churches per day.

Rondônia stands out as an emblematic example of this expansion: second to last in the ranking of Brazilian states with the highest number of evangelical churches in the 1970s, Rondônia began to appear among the top five as of 2000. In 2019, there were 60 evangelical churches per 100 thousand inhabitants in that state.

Crimes are not investigated

In addition to the omission of the state and the unpreparedness of the police, guided by a public security policy focused on repression and not prevention, according to experts interviewed by Deutsche Welle, impunity is a major variable in the high number of femicides.

Another research led by Márcia Oliveira in the state of Roraima, which has the second highest rate of female homicides (10.8), most crimes are not investigated by the police. According to Oliveira, 70% of the officially registered cases of femicide that occurred during the pandemic occurred in mining regions.

"None of these cases had an ongoing investigation process, they were simply archived due to a lack of investigation conditions. In other words, crimes in mining areas are not investigated", comments the researcher.

Many of the murdered women were taken to areas of illegal activity in the Amazon to work as general service providers, such as cooks, and sexual services. "Crimes occur in a banal way. A woman who supplied food, for example, demanded her payment for the week. The miner simply shot her in the chest, turned his back and walked away. In front of a lot of people. And no one retains this person", cites one of the cases.

"I want him arrested"

Already alarming, the number of women who suffer violence in Brazil may be underreported. That's why Silvana Mariano, professor at the State University of Londrina (UEL) and coordinator of the Femicide Studies Laboratory (Lesfem), is betting on a different methodology to question official information.

"We believe that the data provided by Public Security departments is undersized. According to the methodology we adopted, we predominantly use press sources and sources in the territories and, from these, we reach other publications", explains Mariano.

For Lesfem researchers, just counting the crime is not enough, it is necessary to know more about the victims and the circumstances they lived in. "Before the crime is consummated as femicide, the circumstances involve violation of women's rights that are crossed by differences in power, which favor men, and which involve disregard for women", analyzes the scientist.

For Carla, who survived the femicide attempt, the attacker will never give up on annihilating the victim. "I wanted him to be arrested, he needs to be stopped. It's very difficult to say that. My daughter will suffer a lot. But he has to be arrested. How am I going to live my life if I don't even know where he is? I really want my children near me soon."

An Amused Rant

The Ban Hammer Has Fallen

I discovered this morning that I have been unceremoniously banned, booted, kicked to the curb by the “site owner” of the Napoleonic Wars Forum. No preliminary personal email warning to shape up, no admonishment on the site that further infringements on the site’s “rules” would result in disciplinary action. Just a message when I tried to sign on: “Access denied by site owner.”

As some folks more famous--or infamous--than I have said: “I’ve been thrown out of much better places.” This is very true here.

This site is the “successor” to Bob Burnham’s long-running and very popular Napoleon Series, which had a forum to die for: a wealth of threads each and every day, a multitude of participants from all areas of interest in the Napoleonic Era, and all national perspectives, historians of repute and academic wannabes, wargamers and re-enactors, and just plain fans of the period. Every day featured between 30 and 50 new posts on new threads or existing ones, and some of the latter looked like an Amazon python twisting itself into knots. We all had fun. We all argued and disagreed and agreed and argued some more. The sheer amount of knowledge among all participants, casual and fanatic, was truly amazing.

The day came when Burnham decided he didn’t want to be involved with revamping the website, and passed the reins to someone else.  Because Burnham was an Anglophile, the type who adored the British Army right down to the buttons on their gaiters, we weren’t too surprised that the website recipient was himself British. But...

I suggest this because the “site owner,” an avowed Anglophile who determined that his site would be a celebration of all things Wellington and Waterloo, was simply too inexperienced in managing such a site, and certainly inexperienced in the totality of the Napoleonic Era outside the borders of the British Isles, other than the ubiquitous Peninsula, or course, or the interminable naval battles. He expanded into podcasts featuring topics by his tiny circle of questionable personages: an undistinguished gentleman who wrote a book—one!—about the British soldier under Wellington and persuaded five US Army psychiatrists to read dubious memoirs and letters taken out of context to pronounce Napoleon a narcissist and megalomaniac bent on world domination; a woman who holds forth at a Belgian university and whose expertise is in modern terrorism but tries rather desperately to transform Napoleonic France into a terrorist state; an otherwise charming Scot lass who describes herself as a “fan” and holds forth on the various Napoleonic marshals after having read a couple of secondary sources in English; and another nice but thoroughly British young man whose expertise is—wait for  it!—the British Army from 1700 through 1855.

The owner uses these folks repeatedly as experts on his podcasts, And lest the unwary should wander in, the titles should be a warning. One of the more recent in an unfortunate series entitled “Napoleon’s Marshals: Boney’s Boys in Spain” alerts one immediately to the slant.  Another series announced itself thus: “New Series: The Peninsular War – Origins.  In the first installment of a new series [ Blank] and I discuss how the Peninsular War managed to explode seemingly out of nowhere in 1807-08, why Bailen was a dream, why Murat was an idiot, and why the Brits weren’t really interested...at least initially.” I can imagine this blurb should make some of you squirm at the mistakes and the biases, but that’s what you get when the talking heads are so very incompetent.

I admit since the first year of this pitiful site’s existence I rarely bothered commenting. But as time passed and it became increasingly inane, Brit-centric, and paltry, my clamoring snarky side came out. I knowingly violated the “...be kind!” pronouncement. I trashed the site owner as an academic wannabe whose terminal degree was in “Research,” and dissected the pretensions of his coterie of podcasters. I pointed out that they were all linguistically deficient, thus relying on English language secondary sources and unfamiliar with European archives. I referred to the site owner as definitely third-tier in all his endeavors.

And all that was after some severe self-editing.

But I am proud to have been removed from such a cesspool of mediocrity; I was beginning to spend too much time snarking when I could be doing something more useful and uplifting.

Whitney This book, assembled by the great guys behind the premier podcast in the genre, is an excellent way to sample a breadth of contemporary Sword & Sorcery fiction! My favorite story was "The Blood of Old Shard" by John R. Fultz, with Scott Oden and Howard Andrew Jones' tales close behind, and there were no duds in the mix. "The Blood..." really surprised me with a heart and inventiveness which the opening doesn't give away yet, you realize upon finishing, deftly sets up. 2) Fires of Azeroth by C.J. Cherryh Left my big ol’ spoiler-laden review on Goodreads for ya. 3) Black Paper: Writing in a Dark Time by Teju Cole 4) The Citadel of Forgotten Myths by Michael Moorcock *5) Neuromancer by William Gibson 6) The Expert System's Brother by Adrian Tchaikovsky 7) The Expert System’s Champion by Adrian Tchaikovsky I confess I finished the first book in this series having enjoyed myself, but wondering if I'd remember what I'd read a year from now. I don't have that concern with its follow-up. Tchaikovsky has enriched the world he set up in the first installment quite nicely, and I hope I get to explore it further in a third. 8) Old Moon Quarterly: Issue 3 9) Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner 10) The Gurkha and the Lord of Tuesday by Saad Z. Hossain 11) The Dreamthief's Daughter: A Tale of the Albino by Michael Moorcock 12) Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino Do you think you’d enjoy hearing Tarantino discuss mainly his childhood and adolescence re: movies that meant a lot to him during that period? Congrats, this is extremely that. It could not be more that. 13) The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe 14) Consider This: Moments in My Writing Life After Which Everything Was Different by Chuck Palahniuk Roughly 70/30 instructional / biographical. Has a lot of good advice, focusing on a more literary mode than classic genre stylings, all in a voice and coming from a place any Palahniuk fan will be familiar with (I would have been stunned NOT to find something like the "Voice of Authority" snippet in a writing book by Palahniuk). Cozy Craft Mystery Series by Millie Ravensworth

This a general review so I will talk about the series and about the single instalments.

I love cosy mystery and have been reading them since I read the first Lilian Jackson Braun and was involved in mysteries featuring a quant town, lovely pets, and amateur detective/detective. My taste evolved and now, after years and a huge number of series I read, I’m quite spoiled and I know when I am going to love a series after a few pages. The Cosy Craft Mysteries were one of those series that are a lot of fun and solid mysteries. Penny, Izzy and the characters grew on me page after page, and I was fascinated by the descriptions of the fabrics and the tips and tricks of professional sewing. My sewing skill are very basic, but I always wanted to be like Izzy: creative, with a lot of skill in a manual craft, and a lovely person. Penny is more logical and business like, I wasn’t convinced at the beginning, but she grew on me. This a general review so I will talk about the series and about the single instalments.

The Wonderland Murders is a good start for a cosy series: even if it introduces places and characters it’s quite fast paced and there’s always something going and keeping your attention alive. I liked the solid mstery as it kept me guessing and surprised me with the twists. There’s a lot of culprits as the victim is not very likeable. I appreciated how the author described the bully and how you couldn’t help feeling for the women.

The Painted Lobster Murders is the second book in the series, a highly entertaining and compelling story since the first pages. We meet Monty the dog, a lovely character I loved. This is another solid and compelling mystery. There’s a lot going on in Penny and Izzy life and they’re developing business and managing the shop as Nan took the backseat. A fast paced and solid mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed and kept me guessing. My only note: I hate love triangle, it’s my cosy mystery pet peeve, and hope it will be solved soon

The Sequinned Cape Murders is the third in the series and I enjoyed it even if it’s not my favorite.. There’s more sewing than mystery but it’s also the one with Izzy under the spotlight and I thoroughly enjoyed this change. There’s romance, there’s another good mystery and the usual suspects.

The Swan Dress Murders is the fourth book in the series: another fast paced and entertaining mystery that kept me guessing. I was hoping that the love triangle was solved and hoped this is the last book with Penny who can’t decide. I enjoyed the story and the complex plot even if there’s my pet peeve but it’s not a main point in the story. Penny and izzy are a good couple of investigators and they’re investigation are well done. Another good story and the last published.

"A federal court has found that Google illegally abused its market power to quash competition in internet search. The ruling hands the Justice Department its biggest victory in more than two decades in limiting the power of Big Tech companies to control and dominate the huge markets they have created.

“Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Judge Amit P. Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia wrote in his judgment on Monday.

Mehta ruled that the Justice Department was right in saying that Google violated antitrust law by forging restrictive contracts with Apple and other phone makers that required them to install Google as the default search engine on smartphones. He also decried other practices of the Alphabet Inc. unit that prevented its rivals from competing on an even playing field.

“This victory against Google is a historic win for the American people,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland. “No company — no matter how large or influential — is above the law. The Justice Department will continue to vigorously enforce our antitrust laws.”
