Judges' Remarks: Wow, this movie has it all! It was a creative move to tell most of the story through a series of "breaking news reports," complete with high-quality title screens, chyron captions, and green screen video backgrounds. The anchor, the on-the-street reporter, and the various people being interviewed all turned in engaging performances. I liked that we got to interview not only a patron, but also the owner of the zoo, seeing the various perspectives. The intertitles also helped to push the story along, and I also thought it was a smart move when we cut away from the "news" format to see dramatic scenes of the animals in their cages (and it was ingenious how you used subtitles so we could "see" what Ivan is thinking!). I loved the elaborate protest scene, complete with picket signs, and I especially enjoyed the passionate performance by the head protestor: "Well, this is an outrage! . . . He actually spelled out 'home' for us! Look at this!!" It was cleverly done at the end to show Ivan and Ruby frisking about with "real" gorillas and elephants using the magic of green screen. And that was a perfect conclusion, with everyone singing a rewritten version of that Earth, Wind, and Fire song! (Especially the way "Ivan" was flinging themselves around.) From top to bottom, an amazing movie!
