Never doubt my ability to recommend this show. One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses.

I Cannot Reach You

AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai

Japan 2023 - Netflix

This classic friends-to-lovers BL is everything Japan does best. Angsty. Emo. Aching. Driven by real thirst. Yamato is deeply in love with his childhood bestie, Kakeru, and has been for ages, unable to hide his ungainly damaging high school need. He wants Kakeru in every way possible and it oozes off of the screen. Kakeru is silly and a little simple, but not frenetic or overly camp about it. He is earnest, and genuinely wants to keep Yamato in his life which means giving a romance (and gayness) a fair chance. We watch him realize his affection and what form it can take in a truly authentic way. This show was impossibly kind to both of its lead characters and I felt almost honored that I got to watch something so lovely and rare play out on my screen. Full review.

Light On Me

Korea 2021 Viki

Korea does an elegant pastiche of traditional live action yaoi but all tropes are cleverly deployed to bolster one of the most riveting love triangles ever put on screen… and I don’t like love triangles. LoM strategically tailors classic BL tropes to 2 different semes resulting in pristine pacing, plot, and character development, explicitly serving narrative (not just to tick boxes). LoM is a master class in this trope drops. (If you write fanfic or romance you should study this show.) Full review.

Cherry Blossoms After Winter

Korea 2022 Viki

Korea took on early Japanese sweet yaoi but gave it their signature softness and precise production with a STUNNING color palette (beautiful pastels, sun-saturated over-exposure), manga framg style, some traditional BL character archetypes, that tiny edge of bullying roughness and out-of-control seme, plus FINALLY a palatable take on the stepbrothers trope and it was, in a word, classic. Sophisticated and understated CBAW is not slow, it’s just subtle. It's dream-like and atmospheric, as if the whole thing took place under cold water on a warm spring day. Is there plot or peril? Not really. Do we care? Also, not really. Look, I can’t help it, I’m old school and so is this show. I grew up reading sweet yaoi, and this was THAT YAOI just on my screen. There’s no objectivity with me and this show. It’s a beautiful pastiche and I loved it for how it made me feel and what it remded me of. It’s not flawless, but it is a wonderful experience. Takara-kun and Amagi-kun

Japan 2022 Gaga and Viki

I gnawed on my knuckles and squealed a lot with this show. Reserved cool kid who must learn to communicate to keep the tiny disaster nugget he’s madly in love with. It is beyond charmg: soft and gentle, packed with cuteness and high school angst, thirst, & yearning. Was there plot? Not really. Was it emotionally tense and paced well enough for me not to notice? Absolutely. Did I enjoy the hell out of it? Oh yes. Full review.

Blueming

Korea 2022 - iQIYI

It’s a tiny bit dark and a tiny bit bittersweet, almost too honest to a university experience and first love for BL, but if you want your md ever-so-slightly messed with and your intimacy hellishly sweet, this BL will do it for you in a coldly distant manner, while bitch slapping you with self worth issues. I wasn’t into it at first, but the leads are solid and by ep 5 it got really good, becomg a narrative about self discovery meets understanding and accepting others people’s flaws without hurting them. Ultimately we witnessed two characters maturing because of each other and their mutual affection, without that affection becomg the conflict point. Instead, tension was built around other aspects of identity, popularity, and self-worth. While production values were a touch lower than usual for Korea, Bluemg included decent kisses and other forms of intimacy and a satisfying ending plus there’s judicious and very elegant use of tropes, this is a great BL. About Youth

Taiwan 2022 - Gaga

A truly lovely little coming of age high school BL with a classic YA low drama but high angst and an earnest depth. I didn’t even mind the singing, and that’s saying a lot. A weak seme/uke dynamic but tons of BL tropes (both rare in a high school setting but common for Taiwan) makes this one feel both sweet and colored by real world authenticity and grit. Full review.

My Love Mix Up

AKA Kieta Hatsukoi

Japan 2021 - Viki

Completely adorable absolute chaos bi disaster muffin falls accidentally and utterly in love with his classmate, hijinx and friendship result. What’s great about this BL is that it deals with things like homophobia, asexuality, and one sided affection in an extremely gentle and palatable way. Perhaps sometimes too subtle, but I believe this is a great show for younger audiences, particularly if you want to spark conversations about identity, sexuality, authority, truthfulness, and consent. Oh and it’s funny.

The Eclipse

Thai 2022 - YouTube

GMMTV does gay Blacklist with a good boy/bad boy pairing. This is a good show but the cast is excellent and the leads are absolutely flawless, which elevates it beyond just good. We got a nuanced and multifaceted burgeoning relationship: philosophical (and socio-political) conflict contrasted to moments of empathy; flirtation contrasted to moments of genuine affection, plus plenty of angst. This narrative is less about love than it is about courage and tenderness. However, near the end the pacing was off and the plot frustrating. Still, this is an enjoyable watch, with a finale that features verbal consent and a fun blooper reel.

Destiny Seeker

Thai 2023 - WeTV

Frankly this probubly ranks along side most of hte runners up, but it's chronically under watched so I wanted to give it a special shout out.

A darn near perfect pulp featuring 3 likable grumpy/sunshine pairings with uncomplicated iterations of enemies to lovers. At least one half of each does a decent amount of pining and there’s good chemistry, classic tropes, and communication rep. It’s fun and full of linguistic jokes. Sublimely cheesy but a good rainy day offering with tons of rewatch potential. Full review.

Number Eight - Tripping: Chapter 6

Characters: Rinne, HiMERU, Kohaku & Niki Location: Wasteland

HiMERU: “Hello? Is this the ‘Number Eight’ staff?”

“To tell the truth, we’re in a situation where filming would be rather difficult, so we decided to reach out using the emergency communication function on the tablet…”

Niki: Is this the time to be so polite, HiMERU-kun!? We need an ambulance! An ambulance!

Kohaku: No, Rinne-han’s at his limit! Please, we need someone here!

HiMERU: “My apologies. That’s the situation, so is it possible to send someone here immediately?”

“Yes. Thank you. It’s really urgent…”

Niki: Is this what you wanted, HiMERU-kun?

The staff member’s tone of voice also changed when they heard what’s going on. It seems they’re pretty worried about us, so don’t do anything violent, okay?

HiMERU: Please, rest assured. They may have left us unattended for a while, but that would make us villains if we were to do something like that.

Alright, I’m counting on you, then, Oukawa.

Kohaku: Okay, just leave it to me. I’ll make sure to do a good job without hurtin’ them.

HiMERU: Oh, thank goodness! You’re here!

Yes. Amagi just wouldn’t wake up. We’d like to request an ambulance.

We’re only allowed to contact a certain number of people on our tablet, so it would be great if you could call an ambulance in our place…

Niki: Now, Kohaku-chan!

Kohaku: Thanks. We’re going to borrow this for a bit ♪

…Ko ko ko. Now, we finally have a phone that allows us to contact whoever we want.

Niki: Sorry for tricking you, staff!

We don’t have anything against you, but it looked like we were completely abandoned by the TV show, so we had to use a bit of force, you see.

“Tell me what’s going on”...?

Oh, you don’t know what’s happening right now. I only understood after HiMERU-kun explained it to me three times as well.

But Rinne-kun wouldn’t wake up this morning, so we were looking for another driver.

Oh, it looks like HiMERU-kun’s done with his phone call, so he’ll tell you the rest.

HiMERU: Right, where to begin…

First, we should talk about what sort of show “Number Eight” is.

By nature, this is a revived version of the old travel show “Number Eight”.

But the ones who would be doing ridiculous things in the new version weren’t comedians, but idols.

This is HiMERU’s guess, but a similar TV show took place last year, didn’t it?

Someone caught wind of its success and wanted to try their luck, didn’t they?

Kohaku: It seems you’re right, judging by the staff member’s reaction.

“Number Eight”... is based on the TV show that involved the school trip the Yumenosaki second-years went on, “High and Low”, right?

I’ve only heard rumours, but they had to cross over Australia, didn’t they?

HiMERU: Yes. We thought this show was an extension of “The Minotaur’s Labyrinth”, but we were wrong from the beginning.

“High and Low” was the project that led to Anzu-san’s downfall, but at the same time, it also succeeded due to the quick thinking of the people there.

Naturally, that caught the eye of a producer, who also wanted to find success, and so, they decided to create a similar TV show.

No wonder there was a demand for a TV show that threw idols in all sorts of absurd situations overseas without a single explanation. That way of thinking is completely inconveniencing others.

Niki: But it’s weird. Why would Anzu Nee-san make us do something similar after knowing what happened during “High and Low”?

Kohaku: Well, they must’ve done a good job trickin’ her.

We had experience from “The Minotaur’s Labyrinth”, so maybe they thought we’d be able to handle being on a crazy TV show.

HiMERU: Besides, “Number Eight” has past achievements to its name.

Being on a revived TV show that’s filmed overseas is a new challenge for “Crazy:B”, and Amagi must’ve thought it was rather appealing as well.

But that only applies to the old “Number Eight” TV show.

Naturally, the current show’s script is not appealing to us at all.

And there you have it. I do feel bad, but we’ve decided to take the liberty of rewriting the script ourselves ♪

With this distance and angle, the staff who are watching us from afar shouldn’t be able to tell what we’re doing.

We’ve decided to take matters into our own hands.

Niki: Nahaha. Now, this is a surprise attack. Have you finally understood our hardships?

HiMERU: This is the other reason we called you.

It’s a rule on “Number Eight” that we can only borrow tools, correct?

At the same time, it doesn’t ban us from asking for help.

Therefore, we decided to use your phone to call for help.

…Oh, there's a car in the distance. HiMERU had a feeling it would be arriving soon.

We’re not as far from town as HiMERU had thought we were.

This means Amagi’s hard work has finally been rewarded.

Rinne: …………

Niki: It’s here! The car’s here!

With this, we can easily go back to our starting point and the town we were just in ♪

Kohaku: Yeah. It almost makes all the absurdity we went through a piece of cake.

Our last mission is to “Go back the path you came and find the goal”. We should be able to hold out right until the end.

HiMERU: Indeed. We did lose some time, but if we have six hours left, then it should be enough time to find clues for the goal.

HiMERU hopes you rest well, Amagi.

When you wake up, the worker bees will be working and doing your share of the work as well.

you actually sent this request to me after I already got the 10 i needed, but I was already planning to put Rinne here so it worked out in the end??

Warnings: Nothing! Just Fluff!

When Rinne Amagi, leader of Crazy:B and king of troublemakers asked for you to come with him someplace, the signals were basically blaring inside your head. Not that you actually had a choice, seeing as he already had an arm around your shoulder and started dragging you with him, either not hearing or just straight up ignoring any words of protest coming from you.

To say you didn't like Rinne could be quite the understatement. He'd always do these kinds of unreasonable things, and just expect for you to play along. You know that getting riled up is exactly what he wants, but it's not like you can just bottle up your grievances against him! Even now, he can just squeeze you in tighter as you try to flail around to no avail.

When you realized that trying to escape was just a waste of energy, you decided to just hang your head low and follow his lead. Still though, it did make you a bit embarrassed to be this close to Rinne. Sure, he was crass, loud, and did nothing but cause problems for you; but you know that it's not like he ever did anything with purely bad intentions, and if it really comes down to it, he was objectively a pretty attractive guy.

You quickly dispel such thoughts, realizing that such an intuitive person as him could probably find out what was on your mind if you linger on it for too long. "Amagi-san... Where are we even going?" A sigh made its way out of your mouth at the end of your question.

"Come on now, we're best buds aint' we? Just call me Rinne already!" He lets out that signature hyena laugh of his and you wonder when exactly he started considering you a 'best bud' of his, or maybe he was just trying to get a reaction out of you? I mean, sure maybe to other people you two would seem close, but you know within yourself that you did not like this man at all. You try your best to keep a poker face, and it seems like it was good enough to dissuade him.

"I made it big at the pachinko machine earlier! So now I gotta spend all this cash while I'm still feelin' the high!" Your face sours at that, partly wondering whether or not to even bother scolding him on that awful outlook. When Rinne suddenly stopped, you looked up to see that the two of you were at the entrance of a nearby mall. You sighed again; he really was about to spend his money, wasn't he?

He brings the two of you to the first store he could lay his eyes on, which seemed to be cute store full of plushies and other toys. He grabs a bunch of random stuff off the shelves and shows them to you, his sparkling eyes catching you off guard. "Hey, which of these do you think otouto-kun would like?"

When you look at the things he was presenting, it was quite difficult to make a choice, seeing as he just grabbed all sorts of things. "Hmm..." You took a good look at everything, before coming to a pretty sound conclusion. "If it's your little brother, he'd be plenty happy with anything just as long as it was you that got it, wouldn't he?"

Rinne ponders on your words for a bit, his finger on his chin as he makes a comical thinking face. "I guess so. Still, what looks good here?" He nudges the things back at you, and you take another look at them. There were a bunch of kids' playthings like action figures, dolls, cars, and plushies. Jesus, how old was the target demographic that Rinne was going for?

"I guess this? It's got a sketchy looking face, like you." The fox plush you were pointing at did have quite the strong resemblance to Rinne, and while you'd never admit this next part, it actually looked quite cute. Rinne turned the plush in question to look at him, imitating the dumb smirking expression it had. "cute."

Your eyes widened when you realized what you just said, but you start to thank every known God in existence as it seemed like Rinne didn't hear you. Rinne then turns to look back at you. "What's up? Somethin' on my face?" He moves a bit closer to you, pretty much forcing you to look at his face. When he's up close like this, you really can't help but admire how handsome he is.

You can feel your face start to heat up and decide that literally nothing would be worse than having Rinne see that. "Huh?! Hell if I know, go look at a mirror or something!" Before he could even reply, you brisk walked all the way out, leaning against a nearby wall. You were quite curious as to what he was going to end up buying though, seeing as he showed you some pretty childish options for his younger brother.

You start massaging the space between your eyes, when you suddenly feel a hand on your shoulder. He didn't even seem all that troubled by how you shouted at him earlier. "Alright! Next stop!" He holds you by the wrist and drags you to a jewelry shop, letting you sit down on one of the chairs as he looks at the stuff they had on display.

When you realized this might take a while, you decided to go check some of the stuff out too, seeing some reasonably priced accessories like necklaces, rings, and such. They seemed like the type that Rinne would often wear, so you wonder if this was a shop he frequented.

Your eyes land on a pendant that had a modestly sized jewel of your favorite color on it, making a mental note to come back to this place soon once you had some money to spare. You decided that it would probably best to go back to Rinne, turning around before bumping into something.

You look up to see that Rinne standing right in front you, and you wondered just how long he was there. "Uwah?! What do you think you're doing?!" You quickly made space between the two of you, taking a few steps to the side. Rinne's eyes linger on what you were looking at for a few seconds, before he let out a small chuckle.

"I'll be here a while. I'm not sure what a good gift for MERUMERU would be, so just sit tight somewhere nearby would ya'?" He makes a shooing motion, signaling for you to go and find something else to do. A part of you was kind of disheartened at that, a slight frown appearing on your face before you did as he said.

You were walking around aimlessly, though still close enough to the store so that Rinne could find you easily if he were to finish soon. Though the day has been quite hectic so far, you can't say that you completely hated it. Sometimes you wonder why Rinne even hangs around you, compared to him, you found yourself to be a total square. You can't even admit to yourself that you like him, and you treat him badly because of that.

What if one day he gets tired of that? Of you? To try and shift your thoughts, you slap your cheeks more forcefully than you wanted, having to wince in pain at what you just did. "Ugh... Stupid Rinne." You cover part of your face with the back of your hand, knowing full well that you were blushing quite a bit.

"Oh? Turns out you can call me by my first name!" Your jaw drops when you realize that the worst possible person to have heard you, just heard you. Your mouth starts making all sorts of weird sounds as Rinne pulls your hand down, showing your blushing face to him in all its glory. "Wouldja' look at that? You're way cuter like this, you know?"

Rinne puts on his iconic hyena laugh as he started to poke your cheeks, making you even more embarrassed than ever. "Come on, aren't you gonna' yap at me like usual?" Rinne was more than ready to play this game for the long run, until he realized your eyes were starting to water. "I love you."

"HUHHHHH?! Someone starts crying and THAT'S the first thing you say to them? Just how stupid can you be?!" Rinne didn't even give you time to react before putting you in a headlock and giving you a noogie. "Are you an idiot?! What are you doing!"

"Kyahaha! That's more like it! Can't have you cryin' on me on our first date now can I?" Ugh, just what is this guy talking about? You wanted to complain some more, but you suddenly realized you didn't even want to cry anymore; let alone feel sad. Not that you'd give him any credit for this, seeing as he was the source of your grief to begin with. He lets you go, rustling your hair a bit before a more serious expression appears on his face. "I love you."

"I heard you the first time!" You don't really know why, but you can somehow tell that he was being serious. He's trying to hide it, but you can see how his hands were shaking ever so slightly, and how the tips of his ears were just the slightest twinge of red; though that was hard to make out because of his hair being a similar color.

"I love you." He repeats like a broken record, his piercing blue eyes not wanting to stop looking at you for even a second. "I lo-"

You put your hand over his mouth, your heart not being able to hear that phrase even just one more time. "Okay! I get it! Stop saying it already!" You can hear his muffled voice try to sound out another 'I love you' and you suddenly feel like punching him in the face instead of giving him a proper answer.

You close your eyes and take a deep breath, needing what little help you can get in order to mentally prepare yourself for what you were about to do. When you decided you were ready, you pulled your hand away from his mouth, looking him in the eyes. "I'll only tell you this once, so clean those ears out and listen up." Rinne's eyes start sparkling, and you suddenly feel a whole new level of nervousness. "I love you too, you big idiot."

You were preparing yourself for whatever it was he would do next, not sure if he would pull you in for a hug, or scream at the top of his lungs, or maybe even admit this whole thing was an elaborate prank. But when none of that happened, you couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at his relative silence. "Hey, Earth to Rinne? You there?"

You shake your head when you receive not even a nod in response. "You still need to finish shopping, don't you? Come on." You realized by now that he probably only came here to buy gifts for his friends, and probably made you help him pick out gifts as a pretense for going out with you.

You turn around and try to look for a good shop for the two of you to visit next when you suddenly feel something around your neck. You tilt your head down to see that the pendant you were looking at earlier was now situated on you. Then, you felt something placed on top of your head, grabbing it with your hand to reveal that it was the fox plush that you found rather cute earlier.

You sighed, finally realizing what was going on here. Rinne probably intended on buying all sorts of stuff that you wanted and then giving them to you as a gift at the end, but without making it obvious to you by disguising it as gifts for his friends.

You grabbed Rinne by the wrist, taking the initiative this time as you point at a nearby shop. "Well? What are you waiting for? You won it big right? I'm not letting you go until I squeeze every last penny out of you!" This time, it was Rinne letting out a sigh as he got dragged from place to place, his wallet bleeding more and more as the day went by.

When Rinne had not even a single cent left, the two of you found yourselves absolutely swarmed with an innumerable number of bags and wrapped presents. Rinne would usually totally hate this kind of situation, after all, not having money means not being able to gamble. But being able to make you smile this much makes him think that maybe it's a price he's more than willing to pay.

"I lo-" Rinne got cut off when he felt you flick your finger right at his forehead.

"I get it, dummy. I'll be in your care from now on, then."

Yep, Rinne knew that he certainly wouldn't regret giving his all to you.

do you know any show where there's a popular kid/lonely kid trope? ☺️

not many of the shows i've watched fit this trope exactly (and especially the one i have in my head where the lonely kid has zero friends and the popular guy has roses blooming any time he enters the room) but i've compiled a list with couples whose dynamics resemble it, somewhat? i hope that's okay, when it comes to anon requests i kinda have to read minds so i rely on "more is more"

Fish Upon the Sky - starting off with a great example of a kid with a low self-esteem searching for love and the heartthrob chasing after him; it's also enemies to lovers though completely one-sided lmao

Semantic Error - we've got the campus hottie and the most antisocial man in that whole uni (though if you ask Sangwoo he'd deny he's lonely, he's just self-sufficient); P.S as per MDL, Jaeyoung is described as stylish, fun-loving, and – above all – extraordinarily popular. He is the closest thing the college has to a superstar!

I Will Knock You - Noey is a gang leader whom good girls swoon over and Thi, though pretty content with his friend group, is a cowardly goody two-shoes; he doesn't fit the loner trope perfectly but their dynamic is really interesting and worth paying attention to imo

Be My Favorite - Kawi and Pisaeng fit the descriptions perfectly but their love story doesn't develop the cliche way; Kawi is a fiesty bitter lil thing and Pisaeng is the warm sociable type of popular guy

Dangerous Romance - Kang with his teen hormones, unresolved issues and attitude problem is a bully who tried recreating his own fight scene a la F4 style and we know Domyouji is peak drama popular guy (or, since we're talking Thai shows, Thyme); Sailom seems to not be that much on the lonely side at first but the more you get into his character the more you see how befitting this title is

Blueming - the kid that did everything to be popular and the naturally charismatic sweetheart cross paths

To My Star - this doesn't really fit till you realise Seojoon is a literal celebrity and Jiwoo is a pit of loneliness and scepticism

Love Class S2 - again, not too fitting but the side couple of Maru and Minwoo bring a bit of it to the table because Maru is unbearably sociable while Minwoo keeps to himself to the point of misery

Cherry Magic - i mean. shining star of the office Kurosawa/Karan and blending-into-the-background Adachi/Achi kinda fit the bill

Utsukushii Kare - high school? check. popular dude? check. outcast kid who worships popular fella's existence? check! side note, i'd say the way Kiyoi is basically forced to pursue Hira cause he's so dense is hilarious

Fukou-kun wa Kisu Suru Shikanai! - oh, my lovely. the first show from Drama Shower. sweet and approachable Naoya whose good luck rubs off on cute Kota whose loneliness is somewhat brought upon by his constant misfortune. again, the "lonely kid" here has a bit of a mean streak which makes him very entertaining

Senpai, Danjite Koi de wa! - these dudes are in the workforce too but we have the competent charismatic senior and the awkward intern looking up to him

Minato Shouji Coin Laundry - Akira has been running from himself for so long and here comes the handsome smart dude determined to love the f out of him, i'd ssy they count lol

Takara-kun to Amagi-kun - we've got the poker-faced ikemen and his shy beloved

Kabe Koji - literal pop idol with sunshine personality and brooding mess of a doujinshi author (self-esteem issue included, of course)

Bokura no Micro na Shuumatsu - words can't explain these two's dynamic and how intriguing it is to me; Ritsu is a hot guy menace (derogatory) and Masumi has that bit of a crazy streak that works in their favour

Kimi to Nara Koi wo Shite Mite mo - the loner/popular dude dynamic here is somewhat lowkey? the "loner" is sociable and you can't really tell the "popular kid" is one based on his attitude at all, it's way more of a friends to lovers (with a touch of love at first sight if you ask me <3 )

About Youth - i wondered whether to include this one but the mdl description convinced me; they're a swooned-over straight A student and a shy musician, real cuties

Taikan Yoho - the vibes are very different from what you'd imagine with this trope but it technically fits lol, we've got a manga artist who stays at home all day and a handsome weatherman whose company is seeked by everyone

The Best Story - it's YinWar.

21 Days Theory - X and Q participating in a challenge that leads to romance, it's really cute

What are some Japanese bl you would recommend? (i have only watched cherry magic, my love mix up and old fashion cupcake)

Japanese BL is a little harder to get sometimes because they lack consistent international distribution, but if it's not available on a legal platform you can usually find it on a grey site. I tried to mention where I watched it, but some may not still be available on those platforms.

You already mentioned three of my faves, including Old Fashion Cupcake, Cherry Magic, and My Love Mix-up.

In no particular order, here are some others I enjoyed. Star rankings based on my personal taste and are out of 4 (4=flawless, 3=enjoyable, would rewatch multiple times, 2=pretty good, don't regret watching it but probably won't rewatch it, 1=bad, do not recommend):

Seven Days: Monday - Thursday, Friday - Sunday ***/* (Grey, sweet and pure, my first ever Japanese BL, a classic high-school set BL based on a manga, Seiryo says yes to anyone who asks him to be their boyfriend, but the caveat is it's only for one week, one day on a whim Shino asks him out)

Ossan's love 2018-19 **/* (Viki, gay office romcom, distinct Japanese humor that you will enjoy if you liked My Love Mix-up, ultimately kind to its characters)

The Novelist *** (GaGa, distinctly queer story about a young man who begins transcribing for a gay author who writes pornography, open ending, but the both prequel and sequel really round out the story and bring it to a satisfying conclusion)

Restart After Come Back Home *** (Grey, movie, man returns to country home after quitting Tokyo job, starts working at a farm, gay romance ensues, very beautiful)

My Beautiful Man / Utsukushii Kare **/* (Viki, school set, two leads are both a little too immature to make the first move so years pass with both of them thinking their love is unrequited, whipping boy trope)

I'm going to append to this excellent list of recs (all so good!!) a few more BLs that in my mind qualify--not so much ride or die, but as shows that get criticized for having "no plot" or being boring, because they're about relationships rather than about events--and that I enjoyed! This is really Japan-heavy. Apologies to the OP for any of these that they disagree with, my opinions are my own etc!

Seven Days (Mon-Thurs and Fri-Sun) (Japan, grey)*

(anyone who's on BL Tumblr has seen @absolutebl recommend this show before but I can't not mention it) Premise is they get together in the first episode and spend the rest of the show learning what dating the other is like, and deciding whether they want it to continue. Still one of the best shows of all time. While it's still falling-in-love because they barely know one another when they get together, something about the relationship being the sole focus of the show makes it qualify for this in my mind.

Takara-kun and Amagi-kun (Japan, GaGaOoLaLa)

Again, they get together in the first episode and spend the rest of the show really feeling out their relationship. I think this show doesn't get a lot of love partially because it "has no plot" (relationship building is a worthy plot), partially because the blushing virgin trope turns people off (fair) and partially because it relies on the viewer to have familiarity with manga (also a fair criticism). There are jokes, comedic and dramatic beats that I'd only ever seen illustrated that were being acted out in live action without the added effects like in Kabe-Koji, and it admittedly only kind of works. I think my former life as a yaoi scanlator could be blamed for why I love this show so much; it's become a comfort series for me (even though the blushing virgin trope bothers me too, fwiw). I've already re-watched many times and it's less than a year old.

Doushitemo Furetakunai/No Touching at All (Japan, Grey)*

In this one two coworkers hook up and then don't talk about it, and assumptions are made on both sides about what's happening based on each of their past experiences. This one is a classic and remains one of my faves. If I had to compare it to a recent BL, it would be Tokyo in April Is..., if that gives you a sense of the vibes. I read the manga for this one before I watched it and it is such a perfect adaptation, which I admit is part of what I love about it.

Life~Love on the Line (Japan, Viki)

Since you can't really untangle wrestling the weight of societal expectations from a gay relationship, I think this one still meets the criteria. This show follows one couple from when they meet in high school through to old age, and so much of the plot is about the way they navigate and negotiate (and renegotiate) their relationship. Watch the movie version with the extended ending.

I Want to See Only You (Japan, Grey)*

Best friends in high school decide to date and then feel out what that means for their relationship over their last summer break before high school ends. This one has very low stakes through the whole thing and admittedly only covers the start of exploring their relationship, but I'm counting it because I liked the way the relationship change was decidedly undramatic. This show reminds me of what it was like when my best friend and I started sleeping together in our last summer of high school, in that we angsted a bit about it and then our friendship stayed exactly the same, just with an additional element. In that sense it doesn't do much exploring, and I am understanding of the criticism that "nothing happens" in this one more than any of the others on this list, but I'd argue the way nothing changes is just as valid as when everything changes! Fully willing to admit I'm biased on this one too lol

Papa and Daddy S1&2 (Taiwan, GaGaOoLaLa)

This show isn't perfect but it's one of the few with an established couple that has a first and second season, and one of the only ones exploring how parenthood affects a marriage. We do get the story of how they got together throughout S1, but it's more about how their relationship changes as they become parents and again when their kid goes to kindergarten. S2 is more about wrestling with the secrets one of them has kept about their past, and what it means for their relationship in the present. Plus some really excellent Taiwanese Pride representation and queer found family support networks in this show.

Me, My Husband, and My Husband's Boyfriend (Japan, GaGaOoLaLa)

Three (+) people trying to figure out if polyamory can work for them. Not my favourite, but relationship negotiation was the entire plot, and I did enjoy how messy this show got and how imperfect it allowed its characters to be, and that the ending was not perfect or pat but still happy and still poly.

Goodbye Mother (Movie; Vietnam, Viki / Tubi)

Toeing the line because this is about how the couple manage visiting one of their families in Vietnam without being out to the family they're staying with, but I would argue that their relationship with one another as well as with the mother is a key point of exploration in the film. Plus this movie is just so beautiful, and funny, and queer, and wonderful.

Bonus Recs that don't fully match the criteria:

Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese (Japan, Viki) they're not technically in a relationship and it doesn't end happily but the entire film is about the main character figuring out who he is, and he does that in the context of his relationships for most of the film, so it still feels tangential but related to this category.

Eternal Yesterday (Japan, GaGaOoLaLa) this one doesn't end happily and technically it's about a couple who love one another negotiating how to say goodbye to one another (because one of them has already died--magical realism) and what the character's death means for each of them, which makes this show just so utterly heartbreaking, but also really really interesting from a relationship dynamics perspective.

Bed Friend (Thailand, iQiYi / GaGaOoLaLa) this couple are friends with benefits for most of the series, and other plot stuff happens, but the actual important/driving plot is their relationship negotiation and development alongside the processing of and triumph over trauma, and it is incredibly well done and rewarding

Made on the Rooftop (Korea, GaGaOoLaLa) Ok so this film is about two best friends and their relationships, one of which is ending and the other is just starting, so neither really qualify, but it's about the way both of these relationships are being negotiated; we get flashbacks to see what happened in the ending relationship, and we get insight into what is holding back the new relationship. This film is so funny and fun and queer and heartbreaking and beautiful and there is at least one happy ending, so it's getting added here anyway.

The Ride or Die Drama Couples List

So the other night I got a little sassy on main because some of the girlies were complaining that King the Land is focusing more on the couple moments (aka relationship development) between Gu Won and Sa Rang and doesn’t have enough plot. Which is a very typical fandom complaint about romcoms that I absolutely hate, because in a good romance the relationship is the plot, people! It’s bizarre attitudes like this that get us random murder plots spliced into every other romcom for the ratings, and I am begging y’all to stop the madness.

Ahem. Anyway, that post seemed to resonate with some folks and get them discussing other dramas, and so inevitably @troubled-mind wandered into my notes and said gee Shan, it seems like maybe you should make a list of dramas that show us couples in a relationship and explore how they make it work and ultimately stay together. And I’ve warned y’all before, if you make a stray comment in my direction there will be a list coming your way. So here I am again, doing the absolute most.

Today I present to you a list of my favorite dramas that show you not only how the couple gets together, but also how they stay together. Criteria:

The couple doesn’t have to be together when the drama starts, but they do have to actually begin their romantic relationship no later than halfway through the drama’s run so that we have substantial time with them as a couple

The relationship development between the couple is a primary plot driver (so no dramas where there’s a great long term couple just hanging out in the background)

The relationship story may include some physical separation or even a temporary breakup, but not the betrayal kind–these are the sort that actually force an unaddressed issue to the surface and ultimately bring the couple even closer

Happy endings only, these pairs are sticking together

Ride or Die Drama Couples

Bad Buddy - Pat and Pran

(Thailand, YouTube)

This is tumblr so do I really need to tell y’all about Pat and Pran? There is a reason we all lost our minds over this show and it’s because we got to be in this relationship with them so intensely and see them fight to stay together despite it all. Their ending is bittersweet because of their families, but the show leaves us no doubt that they both think the other is worth it and they will always stick it out together.

Dark Blue Kiss - Pete and Kao

(Thailand, YouTube)

Shout out to the OGs! Pete and Kao originally got together in the Kiss series (you can watch it, but you really don’t have to, fam) and Dark Blue Kiss brings them back three years into their long-term relationship to give us a peek into their struggles with the closet and the toll it takes on both of them individually as well as the strain it puts on their relationship.

Flower of Evil - Hee Sung and Ji Won

(S Korea, Netflix or Viki)

Hee Sung and Ji Won are already married (with an adorable daughter) when this drama begins, and the backstory of their relationship is unspooled alongside the larger mystery at the heart of the show. One of the most fascinating and heart wrenching love stories I have ever seen, centered on a character who is so emotionally damaged that he genuinely believes he is incapable of love even as love pours out of him. Damn, I’m gonna make myself cry into my oatmeal.

It’s Okay, That’s Love - Jae Yeol and Hae Soo

(S Korea, Viki)

Speaking of crying, lord. Ahhhhhhh. Let me pull myself together. It’s Okay, That’s Love is a healing drama about two people who fall in love and support each other through serious mental health challenges. I don’t really want to say much more than that. Bring tissues, besties!

La Pluie - Patts and Saengtai

(Thailand, iQIYI)

My beloved! This Thai drama is about a pair of soulmates–or are they–who find each other and try to make their relationship work. That’s it, that’s the show. In this drama, the relationship truly is the plot, despite some of the fantasy elements being used to highlight its themes. La Pluie is about the importance of choice and a rebuke of romantic fantasies that fate and destiny will handle your love life for you. I and many others have written about it extensively, so if you decide to watch, you can go nuts on meta.

Lighter & Princess - Li Xun and Zhu Yun

(China, Viki)

I really love this show. This is a long format drama so there will be longer stretches where the couple still has not officially gotten together, but the relationship between them is the heart of the entire show, and we get the distinct pleasure of watching them fall in love twice, and the second time figure out how to make it stick. Such a treat.

One Spring Night - Ji Ho and Jung In

(S Korea, Netflix)

Oh how I love this quiet little drama about two people who fall for each other while one is still in a relationship with someone else, and figure out how to untangle the mess they’re in. We get to see them not only fall in love, but figure out how to become a unit who can withstand the harsh judgment coming their way and become a family on their own terms. Bonus adorable child alert!

Tomorrow With You - So Joon and Ma Rin

(S Korea, Viki)

This time travel melodrama is one of those that I started with no expectations and then sat up part way through and said what gave you the right to be this good! This is another one where the relationship begins for dubious reasons, but the suspect motives are quickly taken over by genuine feeling. We really get to live with the relationship in this one and the message is all about treasuring the life and time we have together.

The Rebel Princess - Awu (Wang Xuan) and Xiao Qi

(China, Viki)

I think the phrase Ride or Die was actually invented for them. Talk about a power couple. Once these two get to know each other (this is a historical so as per usual, their marriage wasn’t actually their choice but rather the result of some asshole’s machinations in a quest for power, joke’s on them though) they are in, baby, and their devotion and loyalty never wavers. This is a historical epic in war time, so the couple will be physically separated multiple times, but it only makes them stronger and each of their reunions sweeter. Their relationship is the heart of the show and the throughline in their chaotic lives.

What Did You Eat Yesterday? - Shiro and Kenji

(Japan, the ether)

Saving the best for last because this right here is the GOAT in this category. It sits at the top of my all-time favorite dramas list and I love it passionately. Because y’all? This drama is explicitly about a middle-aged couple learning how to be together in a long-term relationship. That is the entire plot. And it’s fantastic. Stop reading this and go watch it!

Honorable Mentions

Yumi’s Cells - Yu Mi and Goo Wong

(S Korea, Viki)

This one is not on the list proper because (gasp) the couple doesn’t end up together. I know, I’m still sad about it, too, even though I went into this drama fully aware of the concept (a season about each of Yu Mi’s major relationships). But man. Yu Mi and Goo Wong just have that something, you know? Even knowing they don’t stick it out, it’s a delight to watch them fall in love and settle into a relationship together. Technically there is a second season featuring Yu Mi’s next relationship (Babi? I don’t know her), but I don’t want to recommend it and you can’t make me.

I must also give a shout out to the bl season 2s that exist expressly for the purpose of showing how the characters settle into a relationship after the first season get together:

hiii this might be hard to answer but im gonna ask anyway—

my ten-year-old brother came out to me as gay about a year ago, but he's been struggling with the idea that his attraction isn't normal. i wanted to show him some bls to show him that he’s okay to be gay, and that queerness is something to be celebrated.

so far, we've watched kieta hatsukoi and my school president, but im stuck on what we can watch next.

Rainbow Prince (for the Disney fans) - adult characters but it's a gay Disney movie

Mr. Heart (Korea) - it's university but it acts like a high school flick

Kimi no Koto Dake Mite Itai (Japan) - this is a bit arty but good

Stupid Boys Stupid Love (Vietnam) - 3 couples, BL, GL, and het in high school navigating friends to lovers. Very soft friendships, no angst, just teens, hormones, and HEAs for everyone. It’s very scattered and low quality, but cute, and nice to see some GL in the mix.

The 8.2 Second Rule - this is a micro piece from Japan, but very low stakes and sweet

Semantic Error - and odd pull but I think it might work

Damn, THIS IS SO GOOD. The cinematography, the acting, the relationships, the tension. I am blown away! Episode 3 delivered and I am here for it. If it goes this way I can tell it will be in my top watches of 2022.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo (12/16)

I love this so much! I love the character growth in so many of them. I guess like the most of us I just adore Lee Jun-Ho. He is a walking green flag! This is such a great series! Damn, my days have simply too few hours!

The Eclipse (3/12)

Ayan is so sassy and Akk is already so confused. I enjoy their progress with each other very much. The story so far is really good and I can't wait for the next episodes!

Vice Versa (6/12)

This is something else. Love the whole different universe thingy and I think the main couple really do have chemistry with each other. The concept of time is something else in this series...I haven't any clue that they are in this universe for a whole fucking year! What the...? But I enjoy this series and its color concept very much!

About Youth (2/10)

First episode made me tear up...I would say this is a good start for a really great and emotional connection to this series. Yeah, I like this one a lot.

Hm...I am not sure after the second episode. People who are triggerd by sa or the hints of it...stay away? My moral compass might be a bit of, but so far I can not really enjoy it?

What if (3/5)

Sometime a low budget drama is just perfect at the end of the day. The friendship in this feels real and so does the relationship between Smart and Peach. The episodes are very short, so you can't do much wrong watching this one.

Coffee Melody (7/10)

Update from the update...It is boring...Duan Yi is very self-centered...he is bland...the lack of chemistry is astonishing...I can't see any plot or progress. At this point (ep 7) it is just painful to watch.

Unforgotten Night (10/12)

Hell yeah! And with hell I literally mean hell! This is a very special series whose depiction of a whip-wielding “dom” will never leave my memory. If you like trash, go for it!

Mama Gogo (2/10)

There are too many series on the side to satisfy my need for second-hand embarrassment that I've neglected Mama Gogo a bit. There are sexy dancing men...so I will definitely keep watching, really!

Minato Shouji Coin Laundry (10/12)

The story of a coin laundry owner becoming friends with a high-school student and we have to wait where this is going. Well acted and kind of cute so far. The tension!!!! Damn!

War of Y (4/20)

This is a strong one. It is a slap in the face for the industry and the audience. Watching it doesn't make you feel comfortable and I enjoy it very much.

On Cloud Nine (4/6)

This had a strong start. I like the atmosphere and the scenery. All those flowers and the emptyness. I have my thoughts about all of this, but I keep them quiet for now.

My only 12 % (2/14)

Not quite sure about this one. The first episodes were kind of...boring?

Okay, this series has its flaws. Do I care? Not at all. I love it. I am obsessed with War's acting and Yin's progress. I don't care about cheating storylines as long as they make sense to me. I love the chemistry, I love the angst and I love their love for each other. 10 out of 10 painful moments

SOTUS S (13/13)

Oh I liked it. And I like the character of Arthit. He is a small, insecure bean and I want to give him a hug and tell him everything will be alright. Kong still can be a little bit to much for me. 8 out of 10 pink milks

The Novelist (6/6) + Spring Life

Exactly what I expected. It is no high romantic bl. It is a high heat boys lust drama. I liked the concept and the story and the acting is really fine. It has its flaws, but I can live with them. 8 out of 10 erotic novels

21 Day Theory (4/4)

This was a cute one. Short but it still managed to transport everything it wanted to tell us. I especially liked the coming out to the family and the friends. And the ending? Sweeeet! 9 out of 10 pastries

Even Sun (6/6)

First I thought I don't get the point, but after reading some comments I realised there was no point in this. The story was...wait, what story? Yes, the ending was cute, but the rest felt rushed and with too many plot holes. 4 out of 10 plot holes

Senpai, Danjite Koidewa! (8/8)

Hm. In the end, it didn't leave a bigger impression than I initially thought. It was a cute story, but the last two episodes were...kind of off. Like they needed some kind of conflict but couldn't come up with anything that would fit the story. 6,5 out of 10 shy smiles

Dark Blue and Moonlight (12/12)

I am just happy I finished it. It was bad. In the end I don't know what the point of all this was. The story got repetitive in the end...they break up, they make up, oh they break up, wait no, they didn't break up in the first place. It is just messy af! This series could have ended after five or six episodes. Yeah, not a fan. 3,5 out of 5 "break ups"

History 2: Right or wrong (4/4)

It took me some time to like Shi Yi Jie. Adored the daughter and her relationship with Fei Sheng Zhe. The story is ok. The character growth is there and I appreciated it. Nothing to rewatch, but nice to watch on a rainy afternoon. 7 out of 10 Egg Fried Rice

History 2: Crossing the line (4/4)

Love it. Great story, lovable characters and a lot of sports. I like the arc of the main and the kind of natural way the two protagonists become closer over time. 9,5 out of 10 volleyballs

History 3: Make our days count (10/10)

Okay, my softspot was without a doubt the side couple. Thomas Chang is just beautiful and I loved every scene he was in. And I don't have a problem with the ending...I am sorry, but I think it was well done and it works with what the series wants to tell us: cherish every moment and make every single day count, because life is short in the and. 8,5 out of 10 shower scenes

See you after quarantine? (10/10)

This was cute. Something different because of the way it was filmed. I liked the characters and the short (very short) episodes. Nothing special and still something to feel good about. 8,5 out of 10 S21

What the toxic fuck was that? Don't get me wrong. I liked it. It was, most of the times, well acted and the story was quite nice, but damn those two are toxic as fuck. And yes, it looks like I threw my moral compass overboard a long time ago. 7 out of 10 toxic traits

My Secret Love (12/12)

A sweet college-BL with a little bit of cringe about a forced BL-couple. Main couple had a high cringe rate for me personal. They were cute, but a little stiff. Secondary couple is an established couple with its own problems and very touchy. Liked their dynamic. Third couple...never thought this one would end up being my favorite, but they are so cute! Adorable! Over all it wasn't something that blew my mind. It was good for a one-time-watch. 7 out of 10 youtube channels

I promised you the moon (5/5)

Still, I can't stand Teh's character. He's just an asshole whithout empathy (in my opinion). He hurts the people around him and in the end he is the victim. No sir...Don't like this attitude and your apologies don't help. But I enjoy Oh-aew and his journey to his true self. I have dearly wished for a happy ending for Oh-aew and Q. I have to say, I didn't like Teh in ITSAY, but here...I truly disliked him till the end! And he is the reason I can't give it a better grade. Not the cheating that angers me that much, but the way he thinks he is the center of everyones world. 6 out of 10 self-centred bitches

His Man (11/11)

Korea's first gay dating show. It was great to see them bond with each other, not just romantically, but with cute friendships. The atmosphere was really good most of the times. Two people found each other and it was quite cute to watch. The fandom, especially on twitter, was toxic af which was very unpleasent. There was so much hate for real people...viewers treated them as couples from their favorite bl and got angry because the real person ddn't act as a fake character but as a real person...and the production played along. I love this show for the particiants and for that 10 out of 10 but the production needs to fix the misleading shit they cme up with! 10 out of 10 for the eight beautiful men

This was bad. The amount of times I shouted at my screen and asked him what the hell was going on is way too high for 12 episodes. The story is messy as hell. The acting is...not good. The plot...what plot? They could have handled the story in one or two episodes. The characters are unlikable. I thought Tee deserved better, but after the last episode? Honey, you're not better than anyone else. Yeah, glad it is over...Can't recommend it. 1 out of 10 unnecessary drama

I like it. Don't read the synopsys on gagaoolala if you don't like spoilers. I enjoyed the chemistry between the two protagonists, I like the aunt and I do like the story. I like that it is shows how fragile a relationship can be if you don't talk and don't listen even though you have a strong physical bond. 8,5 out of 10 baskeball courts

I'll be with you (South Korea)

Short film about a funeral and the way people deal with it and how little we actual now about others. The ending was unexpected and sweet. It was a good, short watch. 7 out of 10 black suits

Tidal (Taiwan)

This was painful and heartbreaking to watch. I liked it (well, no shit, I like pain...). Once again, if you don't like spoilers keep away from the synopsys...and I guess from my opinion too...damn... 7,5 out of 10 marbles
