12th Game - Marvel Multiverse RPG
So, this is a recent purchase and I have to admit that I've had a bad history with Marvel RPGs. The venerable FASERIP is very swingy and born out of the the age when randomness was king, even in character creation. There was a later diceless RPG that never explained how to make characters, apparently expecting you to only play premade characters. Other games I either missed or had similar issues with.
This one has been championed by The Noir Enigma and I respect their opinions of games, so for my birthday I decided to pick it up and look at it. The character creation is fairly quick and the system seems simple and fluid. I'm not sure when or if I'll get a chance to play, but I feel like it was a worthwhile purchase just for looking at the systems.
Anyway, on to creating our gorgon archer. Now, the power set of a gorgon isn't explicitly included in the rulebook, but there are definitive gorgons within the setting. The most stand out character I can think of for this is Delphyne Gorgon:
From the pages of Incredible Hercules
So, somethings I've seen or read about Delphyne:
She does not have a petrification stare. She makes a statement that's an ability related only to Medusa's line.
Her snakes can be attack people.
Her snakes can support her weight.
Her snakes can pull the trigger of a gun.
Her cold-bloodedness means she does not register on infrared sight.
Incidentally, her love interest, Amadeus Cho is in the rule book.
Anyway, I'm going to use her as a basis for this gorgon archer.
We're going to name her Thyra Gorgon. So let's get to the steps of character creation.
Step One - Determine Rank
Marvel Multiverse RPG has 6 ranks.
Rank 1 - Rookie - For people just getting into their origin story, they may not even properly realize they're super yet.
Rank 2 - Protector - Street level superheroes like Daredevil or The Punisher.
Rank 3 - Champion - The sort of hero that can protect a full city like Miles Morales or Ms Marvel.
Rank 4 - Legend - One of the most powerful heroes of a nation. Black Panther, Captain America, Storm, and Spider Man.
Rank 5 - Mythic - Among the most powerful heroes on their planet such as Thor or Gamora.
Rank 6 - Cosmic - Some of the most powerful heroes in the galaxy. Captain Marvel, Silver Surfer, The Hulk, Thanos.
For our character, we're going to go with Rank 3 so we can have a bit of play and show some mechanics that we wouldn't se at Rank 1 and probably wouldn't at Rank 2.
At Rank 3 Thyra gets the following:
15 Ability Points
Ability Cap of 6
12 Powers
3 Karma points per day's rest
x3 Damage multiplyer
Step Two - Pick Ability Scores
There six Abilities in Marvel Multiverse RPG and they are as follows.
Melee - handles melee battle
Agility - handles movement and ranged combat
Resilience - handles health and endurance
Vigilance - handles senses and awareness
Ego - handles personality and willpower
Logic - handles reason and intelligence
The average human has a score of 0 and human ability usually maxes out at 3. Scores can go as low as -3. A hero can get abilities to a cap of 3 plus their Rank. So a max of 4 for Rank 1 and a max of 6 for Rank 3. We also have 15 points to spend. So let's assign those 15 points.
I think I want her significantly better than most people at fighting, but not the best out there or anything. So I'll put a 2 there. I'm wanting to spread out some of her abilities from here between Ego, Vigilance, and Agility, so I'm giving 4 to each. That's 12 points, leaving 1 left. And I'm going to put that at Resilience. Rethinking it, I want her Resilience higher than her Melee, so switching those two stats. Leaving her at the following for her Abilities.
Melee 1
Agility 4
Resilience 2
Vigilance 4
Ego 4
Logic 0
So she has average intelligence, but is very observant and with a strong sense of self and presence.
Step Three - Pick Backstory Elements
So, here we pick both her origin and her occupation. The Background elements will each come with some tags and traits and we are able to add as many extra traits as our rank, in this case 3. We are also able to add as many tags as we want to flesh out the character.
So what is the difference between a Tag and Trait?
Traits carry some minor mechanical effect and also describe something about the character.
Tags are largely narrative with little to know direct mechanical effect.
Hence why you're allows as many Tags as you want, though, having learned from other narrative games, there comes a point at which you have rapidly diminishing returns. Like more is better up until a threshold is passed at which point more is just more of a headache.
In any case, let's start by picking her Origin. The book has a lot of example ones though they broadly fall into the following categories:
Alien
High Tech
Magic
Mutant
Special Training
Weird Science
It is possible to have multiple origins. For example, Captain America has both Weird Science and Special Training. There are also some very specific story origins like "Symbiote" or "Spirit of Vengeance".
For Thyra the origins I'm looking at are as follows:
Monstrous
Mythic
Special Training
I think what I'm going to pick to start with is "Mythic". There's Mythic: Asgardian and Mythic: Olympian. But I think instead I'm going to pick just the basic "Mythic" character type. This comes with the Tag: Supernatural.
For occupation, there's twelve in the basic book and for the heck of it, I'm going with Entertainer. That comes with three Traits: Famous, Presence, Public Speaking.
Now, as a rank three character, I can choose 3 more Traits. These are going to be: Extraordinary Origin: Special Training, Situational Awareness, and Pundit.
The Special Training origin comes with the Trait: Determination.
So her Traits look like the following:
Determination - Don't gain Trouble on actions when Demoralized
Extraordinary Origin - Have an additional origin: Special Training
Famous - Edge to persuade fans, Trouble to persuade haters
Presence - Edge on getting people to pay attention or do favors.
Public Speaking - Edge on persuading groups
Pundit - Edge on giving opinion via Media
Situational Awareness - Edge on Initiative
I figure the Situational Awareness is because of her snake hair looking in all the different directions. I'm also thinking she was a soldier or warrior at some point, but now she performs. Just for the heck of it, I'm going to say she's a folk-rock singer/violinist that does soundtracks and dabbles in TTRPG Actual Plays.
Now for Tags. Currently, she only has "Supernatural" but I'm going to look at a few others. I could give her "Alternate Form" which is considered primarily a narrative thing rather than a power. This way I could give her a secret identity, but I think I like the idea that she is a public gorgon sort of how Dazzler is a public mutant that does entertainment. So I'm giving her a "Public Identity", I'm also giving her an "Extreme Appearance" (naturally). I'm not going to give her "Rich", she's doing well for herself, but she has to hustle. I'm going to give her Linguist a couple of times for English (native language: Ancient Greek), Modern Greek, Swahili, Korean, and Spanish. I'm going to say she's immune to age and has been around a long time. And I'll say Immune to Poison too. I'm going to give her Heroic, she's not a full time hero anymore, but she's still the hero type. That gives her the following tags:
Extreme Appearance - Gorgon
Heroic
Immunity: Age, Poison
Linguist: English, Modern Greek, Swahili, Korean, and Spanish. (Native: Ancient Greek)
Public Identity
Supernatural
Step Four - Pick Powers
Now, for powers, at Rank 3, she has 12 powers to pick. She can pick from Basic Powers and up to 3 other power sets. If she picks less than 3 power sets then she can get extra power picks. So, let's go about picking powers.
From Basic Powers:
Accuracy 2
Additional Limbs
Evasion
Healing Factor
Iconic Weapon - The Pythonic Bow
Inspiration
Wisdom
From Ranged Attack
Double Tap
Point Blank Parry
Snap Shooting
Stopping Power
That's 12 power choices from the Basic and 1 Power Set. So, since she used fewer Power Sets than her Rank, she gets extra power picks. The way you figure this out is to take the Rank and subtract the number of sets used (in this case 1 because Basic doesn't count). This comes to a total of 2 extra picks. These extra power picks can be traded in for Ability points or Traits.
We're going to trade them both for Traits and lean into her entertainer persona to take "Beguiling" and "Audience."
Step 5 - Calculate Other Scores
These are simple figured stats.
Health is equal to the character's Resilience x 30. In this case 60.
Focus is equal to the character's Vigilance x 30. In this case 120.
Ability Defenses are figured by adding 10 to the Abilities so they look like the following:
Melee 11
Agility 14
Resilience 12
Vigilance 14
Ego 14
Logic 10
As a note, she can use Agility against melee attacks due to Evasion and Ego against Logic attacks due to Wisdom.
Damages are based on the Rank with some modifiers for powers. There are four types of damage which are described by multiplying the roll on the Marvel die (a d6 where the 1 counts as a 6 and gives a "Fantastic" result) plus the ability score. Thyra's Accuracy 2 power improves her Agility damage multiplyer.
Melee - Mx3 + 1
Agility - Mx5 + 4
Ego - Mx3 +4
Logic - Mx3 +0
Initiative modifier is based on Vigilance and so for Thyra that's +4.
Thyra's size is average. She's within normal human ranges.
Speed is a base 5 and that increases by 1 for every 5 points of Agility. Thyra only has 4 Agility, so this remains 5.
Base Karma is equal to the character's rank. so that would be 3.
Thus we come to the following.
Thyra Gorgon - Fiddling Gorgon - Rank 3
Profile
Code Name: The Serpentine Sensation (stage tagline)
Real Name: Thyra Gorgon
Height: 5"11"
Weight: 182 lbs
Gender: Female
Eyes: Amethyst
Hair: Black and Gold snakes
Size: Average
Distinguishing Features: Gorgon with reticulated black, gold, and white scales. Predominantly Black, secondary colors gold. White highlights.
Teams: None
Base: San Antonio, Texas
Origin: Mythic, Special Training
Occupation: Entertainer (Singer, Freelance composer, Fiddle Player, TTRPG Actual Plays)
History: Thyra has mostly retired after centuries of moving from one conflict to another trying to fight the good fight. She still pulls out her bow when her skills are needed, but tries to aim for giving inspiration and a bit of hope to people these days. She's gotten a bit rusty after a few decades as a performer, but still a deadly shot.
Personality: Genial and affectionate. She enjoys hugging people and feeling their heat, but maintains distance until she's sure of people's tolerances. She's wise enough to be wary of giving the wrong impressions, trying to be upfront with her expectations of any given encounter. Off-stage and out of a crisis, Thyra is laid back and moves with a casual pace. However, she's simply saving her energy for performance, battle, and bedroom matters.
Other Stats
Health - 60
Focus - 120
Karma - 3
Speed - 5
Initiative - +4 Edge
Abilities
Melee +1, Non-Combat +1
Agility +4, Non-Combat +6
Resilience +2, Non-Combat +2
Vigilance +4, Non-Combat +4
Ego +4, Non-Combat +4
Logic +0, Non-Combat +0
Ability Defenses
Melee 11
Agility 14
Resilience 12
Vigilance 14
Ego 14
Logic 10
Damages
Melee - Mx3+1
Agility - Mx5+4
Ego - Mx3+4
Logic - Mx3+0
Traits
Audience - Ego check to request resources or information.
Beguiling - Edge to persuade people attracted to them.
Determination - Does not gain Trouble from being Demoralized
Extraordinary Origin - Have an additional origin: Special Training
Famous - Edge to persuade fans, Trouble to persuade haters
Presence - Edge on getting people to pay attention or do favors.
Public Speaking - Edge on persuading groups
Pundit - Edge on giving opinion via Media
Situational Awareness - Edge on Initiative
Tags
Extreme Appearance - Gorgon

Powers
Basic Powers:
Accuracy 2 - Agility damage multiplyer +2, +2 to non-combat Agility Rolls
Additional Limbs - Snake Hair
Evasion - Use Agility vs Melee attacks
Healing Factor - Regain Resilience Health (2) end of their turn.
Iconic Weapon - The Pythonic Bow, ignores cover, the arrows twist like snakes around obstructions.
Inspiration - Inspire ally within earhsot
Wisdom - Use Ego defense vs Logic attacks.
Ranged Attack
Double Tap - Ranged Attack with 2 spaces, Fantastic success is double damage and bleeding.
Point Blank Parry - Reaction, fire at enemy that missed them within 2 spaces. Fantastic success is double damage and bleeding.

Stopping Power - Ranged attack, on Fantastic success double damage and free second attack.

“Digital Folklore” Podcast: Where Scary Meets Smart
Podcasting is a safe space for all varieties of monsters. There are more than 175 podcasts about zombies, 47 about werewolves, at least 200 about witches, and 34 about vampires. In two of those podcasts, the co-hosts believe themselves to be vampires. I don’t recommend attending their live shows.
The new Digital Folklore podcast has an entirely new and unique take on monsters. This new immersive podcast shines its light on digital monsters. The first episode, which debuted this week, takes on the internet myths of Slender Man and Momo. As the show notes reveal, “this episode introduces us to two monsters who were birthed on the internet but couldn’t be contained there.”
With topics ranging from the absurd to the unsettling, the Digital Folklore podcast is an accessible and entertaining way to learn about folkloric concepts and societal truths.
Immersive podcast is a term thrown around carelessly these days, like woke and cancel culture. But Digital Folklore delivers even more than expected. The first episode was like a rich symphony of sounds and sonic texture.
The sound design and production here is pure ear candy. There are sonic layers that are incredibly intricate to pull off. This sound team doesn’t need video to saturate listeners in its lurid world.
The background music is appropriately ominous, drifting into the creepy. The two co-hosts are superb at enhancing the macabre mood, and the storytelling makes the listeners feel as if they’re at a campfire listening to scary stories. Then the narrative introduces listeners to a series of experts who offer a lesson in ostension, monster theory, and moral panic.
If you think, this is the podcast version of a cheesy horror movie like M3gan, you’re wrong. Listen to co-host Perry Carpenter during the first episode: “There’s a concept in Folklore. It’s called ‘ostension’ and it describes something very much like this. How the stories we tell push into the real world. It’s like the idea of manifestation. It is a building of a bridge between our imaginations and the physical world. But what about when manifestation actually happens? What about when we bring things into existence that we never really wanted to exist? When something horrible manages to cross the bridge”
Speaking of the co-hosts, there are insanely good.
Perry Carpenter is the founder of 8th Layer Media, which produces the show. He’s the author of two books and has published way too many research papers and online articles. Perry is also the creator and host of the “8th Layer Insights” podcast, which explores the human side of cybersecurity. His day job is that of Chief Evangelist and Strategy Officer for cybersecurity training company, KnowBe4.
Mason Amadeus is 8th Layer Media’s creative director, lead audio engineer, and other co-host of the Digital Folklore podcast.
Mason’s background in audio began as a hobby before he transitioned into an eight-year, multifarious career in terrestrial radio. Amadeus is also a freelance podcast producer, voice actor, sound designer for live theater productions, and collector of tedious hobbies.
Carpenter and Amadeus (doesn’t his name sound like a character from a Dan Brown novel?) gel nicely together, plunging listeners into the universe of internet monsters with a mixture of intellectual curiosity and spooky theorizing.
Unless you believe the show is all about scaring listeners and eliciting that dopamine blast of anticipation, be forewarned. The show hews closely to mundane facts. In the first episode, for example, the hosts mention a murder in Wisconsin of a young girl by two young girls who believed the victim was Slender Man. But the hosts ground that internet meme when they interview an author who explains that one of the perpetrators was an undiagnosed schizophrenic whose visions included that of Slender Man. Rather than a case of supernatural intrigue, it’s tragically another case of the failure of our mental health care system.
The production studio that created Digital Folklore is called 8th Layer Media. The company is just entering the podcasting space with one other podcast called 8th Layer Insights, which takes listeners on a multidisciplinary exploration into how the complexities of human nature affect security and risk. Topics include cybersecurity, psychology, behavior science, communication, leadership, and more — “delivered in a focused, easy-to-digest, and creatively lighthearted fashion.”
Its next podcast to be released is My Podcast Journey, where Carpenter and Amadeus offer to give is a full peek behind the curtain, ‘open sourcing’ their entire process, as well as interview and learn from other prominent creators. Covering everything from tools and workflows to business and logistics, this show aims to give a pragmatic, useful, and deeply-detailed look into every aspect of creative work.
Carpenter and Amadeus call themselves “analytical weirdos” and the term fits snugly on them. Consider how they came up with the name of their media company, 8th Layer Media.
“In the field of information technology, there is a concept called the ‘OSI Model’. It describes seven abstract ‘layers’ which computers use to communicate across networks. From the physical/electrical (layer 1) to the visual/interactive (layer 7), it is a useful tool for considering the technical aspects of a network — but when thinking in terms of security, the OSI model neglects the most crucial factor: People. The 8th Layer.”
Aren’t these the perfect two people to create and host the Digital Folklore podcast about internet monsters?

Hi, it’s 4.00 am and I can’t sleep.
I’m new at tumblr, I saw people make posts were they basically just introduce themselves and stuff and I thought I could do that too
Ok so… I’m Laeira, I’m almost 21 (fuck)
she/her | infp …but I generally don’t like lables
what this blog will be about: I guess poetry, art, music, and the inner connections between them and everyday life, everything I can found in my desperate quest to make the world a bit more bearable
there will be the occasional joke too, don’t worry, I have a very random sense of humor
about me: I like writing ✨🐚 (mostly songs, poetry, I’m currently working on a “novel”, pff feels so weird to say it). I like reading📖, though I’m slower than shit, cinema 🎥 and photography📸. Nature🌲🌿, I have a totally not creepy obsession with human anatomy🫁 purely scientific/artistic, and a totally platonic relationship with science 🔭⚗️ I guess I also love anthropology 🗿and philosophy 🩻 (but I don’t philosophize, just make fun of plato)
music I love (maximum restraint to minimize the otherwise infinite list): Björk, Jeff Buckey, Nirvana, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd, The Guess Who (not the Who), Radiohead, Cocteau Twins, Mecano, Heather Nova, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Donovan, Teresa Teng, the Beatles, Faye Wong, The Zombies, David Bowie, Mitski, Slowdive, King Crimson… fuk, and I’m not gonna get too much into classical, atonal, avant gard music… but you get the idea
fav movies: FUCK. I can’t do this. Let’s see… Mirror (Tarkovskij), Billy Elliot, Adaptation, the Incredibles, The Trial (Wells), Amadeus, Donnie Darko, Rear Window, Trainspotting, Polar Express (shut up), Coraline, Anastasia, the Shining, Whispers of the heart, the Graduate, Pollyanna, Naked Lunch, Ameliè, Black Swan, Lust for Life, Heathers, Lilo and Stitch, Mulan, Cry Baby…(just kidding, I almost imploded)
fav series: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Heidi (yes, I said it), Star Trek tos (so funny I exploded several times, best chairs, best fashion), Steven Universe, Phineas and Ferb, Arcane (of course), Adventure Time, The Owl House, Over the Garden Wall, Bewitched, The Nanny (best 90s show, fight me), Gilmore Girls (I still keep watching it but I HATE how they massacred most characters)
books I somehow managed to read: my favorite books are the ones I find the hardest to read. Metamorphosis, The Neverending Story, 1984, The Picture of Drodrian Gray, The Golden Compass, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, The sorrows of young Werther, Memories from the Underground…fuk I actually read so little books it’s embarrassing, I’m trying hard to improve, I swear!
things I wish wouldn’t exist in this world: arrogance, misogyny, racism, homophobia, and any other bad type “phobia”; inequality, any kind of abuse, especially the one inflicted by “parents”, mental illness, inefficient systems, condescendence and general unkindness
other things that I wish wouldn’t exist in this world: OLAF, I hate you OLAF, Cry Baby, because it destroyed my soul, Howard the duck, because it destroyed my sanity, the gargoyles from Hunchback of Notre Dame, movie remakes, vinegar, and Olaf again, because he’s an insult to life itself
Hope you enjoyed this unnecessarily long post, and if you wanna talk about something feel free to message me :)
It would be nice if I could manage to make some friends too! :D 🦑
