Experts debate where DJ will likely end up
Experts debate where DJ will likely end up
Earlier this offseason, most industry insiders assumed DJ LeMahieu and the Yankees would remain together, even as LeMahieu tested the free-agent waters. A recent report suggested the veteran infielder may be ready to look elsewhere. A panel of MLB.com reporters gathered to discuss. Alyson Footer (@alysonfooter, moderator): A recent Yahoo report suggested that DJ LeMahieu is unhappy that the…

Umpire pushes Astros player, screams ‘I can do anything I want’ in bizarre exchange
Tumblr media
What the heck is going on?
MLB umpire Ron Kulpa got into it with the Astros on Wednesday night, and this crossed way beyond the line of acceptable and into the absurd. It started in the second inning, after Astros manager A. J. Hinch left the dugout to talk to Kulpa over what he believed were several bad strike zone calls.
"i can do anything i want." - jackass pic.twitter.com/LDz0X7iXPT
— Calhoun (@linkcalhoun) April 4, 2019
Hinch simply said “you can’t keep doing that,” to which the umpire responded “I can do anything I want.” Kulpa kept repeating the phrase, adding a “that’s right” for good measure. This didn’t end the issues, not by a long shot.
In the third inning Kulpa got into it again — this time with pitcher Gerrit Cole.
Also, @MLB more absurd behavior from Ron Kulpa. Antagonizing the pitcher, physically pushing the catcher, and interrupting the pitcher warming up. Insane behavior. pic.twitter.com/hKKdLRYLvC
— Tyler Applegate (@t_applegate) April 4, 2019
Video shows Cole doing his best not to say anything to Kulpa, containing his emotions and walking back to the mound after giving up a hit. Exactly what he’s supposed to do in this situation — but that wasn’t enough for Kulpa, who yells at the pitcher, before pushing Astros’ catcher Max Stassi.
Then, if that wasn’t enough, Kulpa stood between the pair at the top of the fourth, interrupting Cole’s warmup. The whole thing was an avoidable mess, and it left fans — as well as players asking questions.
I guess umpires can push players now? Right. https://t.co/K4A7qLCPsc
— Josh Reddick (@RealJoshReddick) April 4, 2019
Hinch was surprisingly calm and collected when asked about the incident post-game.
Comments were more measured this time. Hinch mostly declined to expound on what was said between his team and home plate ump Ron Kulpa. Spring Training is over, friends. pic.twitter.com/PkSAJQOedI
— Alyson Footer (@alysonfooter) April 4, 2019
It’s unclear why Kulpa wanted to antagonize the Astros so much on Wednesday night. Obviously these kind of arguments between umpires and teams is routine, it’s a part of baseball — but this went far beyond the pale.

MLB to honor Jackie Robinson throughout 2019
Jackie Robinson's legacy is expansive and all-compassing, and with that in mind, it's only fitting that Major League Baseball will spend a full year honoring the birth of the game's most important pioneer.
Robinson was born on Jan. 31, 1919. This Thursday, on his 100th birthday, MLB will begin its yearlong celebration of the man who ended the most egregious injustice in the game's history: segregation.
Robinson's wife, Rachel, and his daughter, Sharon, will be in New York on Thursday to officially welcome the centennial celebration. Robinson will be posthumously conferred the Key to Brooklyn, with the key presented to his family by Brooklyn borough president Eric Adams. Rachel and Sharon will also join MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred at the opening of an "In the Dugout with Jackie Robinson" exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York.
On Feb. 5, Jackie and Rachel's alma mater, UCLA, will host a celebration jazz concert at Royce Hall on the university's campus. Four-time World Series champion and Latino Grammy nominee Bernie Williams is part of the lineup of performers that also includes 10-time Grammy Award winner Arturo Sandoval, and Grammy Award nominee Dave Koz.
The concert will not only honor Jackie's groundbreaking achievements in sports, but also his phenomenal strides in human and civil rights, his appreciation of American music and the arts and his unwavering devotion to his family. Sharon Robinson and UCLA alumnus and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts will take the stage to honor Robinson.
The celebration will continue in February in Kansas City with the first of a series of PLAY BALL events located in cities with a connection to Robinson's history. The initial event will be held in conjunction with Black History Month on Feb. 7 at the Royals' MLB Youth Academy, located next to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Two years before signing with the Dodgers, Robinson was an All-Star player for the Kansas City Monarchs in 1945.
Additional PLAY BALL events will be held on March 25 in Montreal, where Robinson played for the Montreal Royals, a Dodgers farm team, in 1946, and in Pasadena, Calif., where Robinson and his family grew up. The Pasadena event will be held in September.
On March 3-4, MLB will participate in the Jackie Robinson Foundation's annual Scholar and alumni conference, with MLB employees serving on career panels, joining a community service effort to benefit Rise Against Hunger and hosting a luncheon for 30 Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars supported by MLB and its clubs at MLB Network's studios in Secaucus, N.J.
That evening, more than 1,200 guests and supporters will attend the Jackie Robinson Foundation's Annual Awards Dinner at the New York Marriott Marquis.
Among April's highlights are the traditional celebration of the anniversary of Robinson's first game with the Dodgers on April 15, 1947. All players and on-field personnel will wear Robinson's No. 42.
Prior to Jackie Robinson Day, MLB and USA Baseball will host the third "Trailblazer Series" at the Royals' MLB Youth Academy, where approximately 100 girls, ages 11-13, will participate in a three-day tournament designed to introduce and develop young women in the game of baseball.
In July, MLB will unveil a traveling exhibit, which was assembled by the Jackie Robinson Foundation to promote the opening of the Jackie Robinson Museum in December. It will be a part of All-Star week festivities in Cleveland from July 5-9 and will be featured separately at other venues and conferences in July and August.
Several individual teams will also be holding their own special Robinson celebrations. For example, on April 13, the D-backs will name their 42nd Diamonds Back Youth Baseball Field as Jackie Robinson Field.
In July, the Braves will invite teams from the Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club in Cairo, Ga. -- Jackie's birthplace -- to participate in the Braves' annual Youth Baseball Classic.
This Thursday, the Dodgers will partner with "Worthy of Love" to host 300 children at Dodger Stadium. Activities include singing Happy Birthday at the Jackie Robinson statue, a DJ, photo booth, balloon artist, face painting and petting zoo.
The celebration will conclude in December, with the opening of the Jackie Robinson Museum in New York City. Visit JackieRobinson.org for more about the Jackie Robinson Centennial Celebration.

Astros P Lance McCullers cleared to throw off ground in recovery
Lance McCullers is making progress in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
Houston Astros reporter Alyson Footer reported on Tuesday that McCullers has been cleared to start throwing.
After being examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in LA yesterday, Lance McCullers (TJ surgery in October) was cleared to start throwing, which he did Tuesday. Flat ground. Important step in comeback process.
— Alyson Footer (@alysonfooter) April 2, 2019
The 25-year-old pitcher underwent the reconstructive surgery in November and will miss all of the 2019 season.
McCullers has been a big part of the Astros’ recent success. He has gone 29-22 with a 3.67 ERA in 453.2 innings during his career. He was an All-Star in 2017, the year the team won the World Series. He has been outstanding in the postseason, posting a 2.53 ERA in 32 innings.

The Houston Astros unveiled their extravagant World Series rings
yahoo
The Houston Astros are a really big team, who needed some really big rings to commemorate their 2017 World Series title. After winning their first World Series in franchise history, the organization vowed not to reveal the design until they were presented on the field and the specs on this baby were a beaut. On Tuesday night, the Astros more than made up for the botched raising of their banner on with the unveiling of their championship rings during a pregame ceremony.
The Astros bling was custom-made by Jostens, which outfitted their 10.55 carat rings with more rocks than Stonehenge. In total, each ring has 214 diamonds and 25 sapphires. The crown of their ring features their logo, the Houston H over an orange star, overlaying a navy blue background. The H consists of 11 custom-cut diamond rings, one for each of their postseason wins. The ring also features 101 diamonds on the front, one for each regular season win.
[Still not too late to join a Yahoo Fantasy Baseball league]
The phrase “Houston Strong,” which became a rallying cry after Hurricane Harvey devastated the city in August, is carved into one side of the ring. Directly below Houston Strong and the year of their title win, is a vibrant Commissioner’s Trophy rising out of Minute Maid Park.
Those details. pic.twitter.com/418PIXFHyZ
— Houston Astros (@astros) April 3, 2018
The other side panel features the city of Houston being raised up after the storm by the left field wall. On the lower shank of the ring is the phrase, “Earned History.” Carved inside of the ring are the Astros records in the three series’ that culminated with their World Series title.

The Astros are expected to distribute 1,332 rings to players, coaches, clubhouse staff, training staff and front office members. And judging by owner Jim Crane’s fingers, it’s clear that no costs were spared on these mammoth-sized rings.

Nationals jump to the top of @mlb #PowerRankings .. There's been a bit of shuffling of the top five teams in our weekly Power Rankings, with the Nationals making their debut as No. 1, and the Cubs, though surging, slipping a bit from their top spot. Three weeks into the season seems like a good time to give props to the Rockies and D-backs, who are thriving while the two teams normally leading the National League West -- the Giants and Dodgers -- are still trying to get on a roll. ..
