Sebastian Stan Shows His Range in New Films 'The Apprentice' and 'A Different Man'
The 'Pam & Tommy' star appears unrecognizable in two projects that prove he's a master of transformation
JASMIN ROSEMBERG
Tumblr media
"I have these very vivid memories,” says 42-year-old actor Sebastian Stan of growing up in Romania during the 1989 revolution.
“One of them being this Dacia car, driving by with screaming people holding the flag. The flag had a hole in the middle, which they had cut out — [erasing] the communist symbol at the time. And then I remember being on my couch with my mom and my grandmother and neighbors, watching Ceausescu be shot.”
What propelled them was the “obsession” Eastern Europeans had with the American Dream. “All I ever heard about was America: the land of the free, the land of opportunity,” says Stan, who at 8, moved with his mother — a pianist, who named him after composer Johann Sebastian Bach — to Vienna before heading to the U.S.
“I remember coming to this country when I was 12 with my mom and seeing the big Twin Towers of New York City and feeling overwhelmed,” Stan says. “And my mom looking at me and saying: “Now you have a chance to become someone.”
Tumblr media
Stan takes a seat in an Amiri look with a ring by The Crown Collective.
The memories rushed back to him in 2019, when he was first reading the script for The Apprentice — the biographical film about Donald Trump directed by Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi (Holy Spider, The Last of Us) and penned by Gabriel Sherman (who wrote the Roger Ailes biography The Loudest Voice in the Room).
“I was intrigued there was a movie being made about [Trump’s] earlier years,” says Stan of The Apprentice, which details Trump’s rise as a real estate businessman in New York during the ’70s and ’80s after being taken under the wing of ruthless attorney Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong) — who dealt in blackmail and had prosecuted the Rosenbergs in the espionage trial that led to their 1953 execution. “I was excited about [Abbasi] as an Iranian-European filmmaker approaching the story.” But after receiving the script, he heard nothing … until 2022.
“Of course, you have hesitation,” says Stan, who takes on the role of the former president and 2024 Republican nominee. “You’re wondering, ‘Why tell the story? What is there to add?’ Or, ‘What can I contribute here? I don’t look like him.’ There were plenty of reservations and my own personal judgements.”
But Stan tried an exercise: “I went back to the script, crossing out the character names and just trying to read it [without] bringing any baggage with me. And I found it to be much more relatable than I had anticipated, in terms of what I felt it was saying about the American Dream. [It was] this point of view of, ‘You’ve got to get there, you’ve got to be perfect, you’ve got to win, you’ve got to get more.’”
Now you have a chance to become someone.

“You have to find parts of yourself through which you can understand the people you’re playing,” he says. “For me, [it was] that moment coming to New York and remembering how grateful I was to finally have a chance — and what my mom was telling me. But I also suddenly felt this burden, which I still feel now sometimes, which is, ‘When is it enough?’”
In the film, Trump goes from being the impressionable, wide-eyed son of an impossible-to-please real estate developer to a megalomaniacal wheeler-dealer who speaks in hyperbole, is obsessed with appearance (his own and that of his first wife, Ivana — played by Maria Bakalova — a relationship that escalates into sexual assault) and surpasses his master in heartlessness and corruption.
“We can see how easy it is to make a Faustian deal with the devil in order to win,” Stan says. “‘What is the cost of this American Dream?’ I related [to] seeing a person so determined to get there, no matter what, that he was abandoning who he was in the process.”
Stan’s ascent has been just as remarkable. After acting in school plays in New York’s Rockland County, he studied at Rutgers University before scoring a recurring role on the CW series Gossip Girl. “The next really big shift I felt was [landing] Marvel, in 2010,” says Stan, who played Captain America colleague Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, a role that led to his signing a nine-picture deal with the studio. He’s also worked with a string of award-winning directors and actors in films such as Black Swan, The Martian and Destroyer.
Tumblr media

His first experience portraying a real person was in 2017 biopic I, Tonya as figure skater Tonya Harding’s husband opposite Margot Robbie. For 2022 Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy, he transformed into Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, husband to Lily James’ Pamela Anderson — which earned him Golden Globe, Critics Choice and Emmy nominations. The projects “had one thing in common, which was Craig Gillespie,” Stan says, “an incredible director, who taught me a lot of things about myself I didn’t necessarily know I could do.”
In becoming Trump, Stan wanted to rely on prosthetics as little as possible. “But we were very aware we don’t look very similar,” he says. “And so, about two months before we started shooting, Ali told me that I should start gaining as much weight as I could in my face.”
Stan’s nutritionist advised him to drink beer — but because Trump doesn’t drink, the actor preferred ramen with sodium-packed soy sauce. He adopted the precise way Trump spoke and moved through a process he equates with osmosis: “Subjecting yourself in an obsessive way to watching and listening and reading everything [about Trump] you can find.”
He credits Strong for elevating their work. “We improvised a lot,” Stan says. “And Jeremy was so prepared that I had to do my research to keep up. Like that scene where [Trump and Cohn are] meeting: I would have to know what school [Cohn] went to, and who his last client was, and that he was from the Bronx and had a photographic memory — in case it came up in the improv. Because he knew who was pitching for the Mets in 1976! It was a really immersive experience and we were on our toes together.”

Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump and Stan as Donald Trump in 'The Apprentice'
After premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in May, The Apprentice had a hard time finding a U.S. distributor due to Trump threatening legal retaliation. But after Tom Ortenberg’s Briarcliff Entertainment acquired the film in late August, it hit theaters Oct. 11.
Stan also stars in A Different Man, in which he plays Edward, an aspiring actor with neurofibromatosis — a rare genetic skin condition that produces tumors. Edward undergoes a medical procedure in the hopes his new appearance will win him a woman (Renate Reinsve) and better his life. Like The Apprentice, Stan considers this film — which scored him the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance when it bowed in Berlin — to address self-acceptance.

“It’s this idea, of ‘the grass is greener on the other side’ — and the truth is, you don't know,” says Stan, who lobbied for the role after seeing director Aaron Schimberg’s 2018 Chained for Life. Both that film and A Different Man, released theatrically by A24 in September, star British actor Adam Pearson, who has neurofibromatosis. “I spoke to doctors, I’ve spoken to Adam in-depth about his upbringing,” says Stan, who sat in Mike Marino’s makeup chair for up to two hours to transform into Edward.
“The prosthetics were so realistic that when I started to walk around, nobody recognized me ... and it was scary,” he says. “You see firsthand how we respond to somebody who looks different.”

Irvin Rivera for LA Magazine
Stan next stars in Marvel’s Thunderbolts* with David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Florence Pugh and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, out in May 2025. “It's a funny group of not-perfect antiheroes that are trying to come to terms with their pasts, and I think people will get behind them," he says.
He’ll reunite with Pam & Tommy’s James on horror thriller Let the Evil Go West, about a railroad worker who stumbles into a fortune that comes at a price — “a very different movie than our last experience," he notes. And he’s producing Blue Banks, from Romanian writer-director Andreea Cristina Bortun.
“It’s this really personal film about a single mother’s journey with her son in Romania, which reminded me a lot of my humble beginnings with my mom — and how tough it was after the revolution, as a single parent, to take care of your kid and at the same time, provide,” Stan says.
“A lot of parents had to leave their kids behind to get a job somewhere else — which is what happened with me for a couple years, until I started living with my mom again. I was with my grandparents," he adds. "It explores the implications and the suffering that comes at the hands of a system that has oppressed people for so long. And then they’re left with trying to find their way.”

For some people, fictional characters who lie about their identity seem to be a particular berserk button. At least it is among Disney fans; they seem to be harder on characters who do it than those characters really deserve.
For example, Disney's Aladdin. Yes, it's wrong that he lies about his identity and masquerades as Prince Ali. It's portrayed as wrong and he apologizes for it in the end. But when fans call him a "compulsive liar" or claim that his love story with Jasmine is toxic because it's "all based on a lie," aren't they going a little too far? First of all, he's clearly not a compulsive liar. He doesn't lie all the time, or just for fun; he does it because he loves Jasmine and she's required by law to marry only a prince. As for the popular claim that "their whole relationship is based on a lie," I think that would only be true if Jasmine fell in love with him because she thought he was a prince. But she doesn't. She first meets him as a street rat and she likes him then. When he tries to affect a different, "princely" personality as Prince Ali, she disdains him as just another pompous stuffed shirt like all the other princes who have courted her. She only falls for "Ali" when he shows her his true personality again. The fact that he still hides his true identity from her is wrong, but it's not some horrible advantage-taking, the way some fans portray it. To me, that claim seems just as faulty as "Beauty and the Beast is about Stockholm Syndrome"!
Or how about the fans of Mulan who insist that Shang does nothing wrong by dismissing Mulan after the reveal of her gender and refusing to believe her about the Huns' survival. "It's not because she's a woman," they say, "it's because she lied to everyone and joined the army illegally." Never mind that she only did it to save her father's life, or that the law is clearly unjust – Shang himself already went against it by sparing her life after the reveal – or that Mulan is the one responsible for the victory for which Shang and the other soldiers are being celebrated, yet getting no credit. Shang and the other soldiers' expressions show that they feel guilty and torn about this, both before and after Mulan arrives. Shang clearly feels pangs of conscience when Mulan says "You said you'd trust Ping. Why is Mulan any different?" So why do some fans bend over backwards to defend him and implicitly shame Mulan for disguising herself?
Does anyone else have any thoughts on this subject?

[Book Four of…]
Story: 5 out of 5 Smut: 2 out of 5
Holy shit. This is definitely my favorite so far! Julian… I don’t know what to say. He’s everything I want in a live action Jafar- brown skin, tattoos, morally gray personality. I love that he’s the total villain and has set plans, only for those plans to unravel right before his very eyes.
And Yasmin! I loved her. I was so scared I was gonna hate her because she was so infatuated with Aidan… but her eyes were really opened in this.
I loved the family and relationship angst, and watching Julian come to certain realizations. You think Yasmin is a spoiled princess, but she is not. And I love her even more for it. Especially when Julian treats her the way he does in order to make her less helpless.
Normally I’m a huge fan of the fast-paced romance, but this slow burn was everything!
* So I’m just gonna state the obvious. Yasmin is “Jasmine” and Julian is “Jafar”… right?
* Damn. Only the prologue and Julian is already taking out his competition.
* Ahhh. And Aidan is “Aladdin”. Got it.
* Lol. Julian thought Yasmin would freak when she spotted him watching Aidan eating her out, but it seems it turned her on instead. It’s Julian that’s fucked 😂
* Yikes. Daddy wants her to get married and be “taken care of”. She loved Aidan though and knows her dad won’t approve. But now Julian is thinking of marrying her and then killing her after the dad dies. This is so messy lol.
* I love Riya. Yasmin needs to listen to her bestie.
* Oohhhh. Interesting. Julian is offering a deal to Yasmin and Aidan, and Aidan will do anything..? Julian thinks he’s power hungry and doesn’t like Yasmin and much as she likes him.. 🤔 Could Aidan be using her..?
* Holy shit. He killed another of Yasmin’s suitors 😂 Dude really wants that diamond company.
* Oh fuck ahaha. Julian played Yasmin and Ali like a fucking fiddle. HE KNEW that Ali would accept his daughter’s choice no matter what, but he still worked his way in AND got Aidan out of the picture. For now.
* “You can make me wear your ring,” I hiss, “and parade me around with your last name, but I will never bow for you.” // He smirks. “We’ll see.” — Damn.
* Damn. That officer disrespected Yasmin and Julian made him pay for it with his life. I love a protective man, even if Yasmin doesn’t know he’s that protective.
* Oh my god… I hope Yasmin stands up for Julian if his mother tries any shit.
* Wow. His mom is a cunt.
* I can’t believe I’m 250 pages in and STILL NO FUCKING! This really is a slow burn.
* Damn. Julian eats pussy like a champ 😂 I can’t believe he didn’t fuck her tho. Why does he wanna hear that she’s his when he still plans to kill her 🤔 He’s doubting his plan now, huh.
* Ian and Jeannie are fucking traitors. I think. And with Yasmin’s fake will and plans to kill Ali if he doesn’t die soon… someone’s gonna tell Yasmin and it’s gonna break her heart because she’s starting to like Julian 🤦🏻‍♀️ So messy.
* Why the fuck is Jeannie so sketchy rn.
* “I want your blood and your anger and your violence and your lust. I want your smiles and your tears and your insolent fucking mouth. I want to reach into your chest and hold your heart in my hands, making sure it only beats for me. But I don’t want your firsts, Yasmin. I want your forever.”
* She chose Julian! Fucking finally.
* Ohhh. So that’s why Jeannie was acting sketchy. But Julian’s plans have changed… now all Yasmin needs to do is have an actual conversation with him before jumping to conclusions.
* FUCK YOU, IAN. I HOPE JULIAN KILLS YOU!
* Why would Aidan take the lamp? Greedy fucker.
* Holy fuck. Aidan was playing Yasmin for a fool the entire time. What a greedy little bitch.
* Oh my god. They love each other and I’m so happy lol.

Books read October-December
My goal was to read 120 books this year. I just finished number 129. (Some of these I reviewed as part of my WWW posts).
October:
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. I had high expectations for this book, as it had been so praised, and I felt let down by it. Still enjoyable, but needed more octopus. Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe. Read as part of Banned Books week. The Romance Rx by Kathryn Riya. I wanted more medicine and medicine-related residency drama. Unraveling: What I Learned about Life While Shearing Sheep, Dyeing Wool, and Making the World’s Ugliest Sweater by Peggy Orenstein. Just a really lovely memoir about life changing and feeling present in the world. The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic by Breanne Randall. Such a disappointing book. Deerskin by Robin Mckinley. Reread. Not my favorite book of hers, but it’s still a great retelling.
November:
Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel. A retelling of an old Hindu religious myth, a story I was only passingly familiar with. I enjoyed the world building, I had trouble with some of the motivations of the characters. And I think it’s hard to write a retelling of a story that a major religion is based on. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. This is such a wonderful book, with the mystery and characters slowly being revealed. The Halcyon Fairy Book by T. Kingfisher. Just witty retellings of fairy tales with a lot of humor and grim. The Anthropocene Reviewed: Essays on a Human-Centered Planet by John Green. I really loved this collection of essays on our world. Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Audiobook. A beautiful exploration of our connection with the world and how we can heal that relationship. The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abby Waxman. Library find. Cute light book, (although if I had a boss who didn’t pay the rent for 6 months straight and I was threatened with losing my job because of it, I wouldn’t be all “oh she’s just that way”) but one that I probably won’t remember in a year or two. The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher. The atmosphere in this book is almost its own character. I loved the secondary characters, but the middle sagged a lot. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. I struggled so much with the beginning, because the set up was so ridiculous. It picked up after that and ended strongly. I don’t know how she’s going to write a 5 book series though. The Magical Language of Others by E.J. Koh. NPR did a write up on her debut novel, but it wasn’t available at the library. It was a quick read but I found the writing to be confusing in places and lacking in emotional growth. Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood. Charming, nerdy, engaging. Just a fun new adult book. Sweet Like Jasmine: Finding Identity in a Culture of Loneliness by Bonnie Gray. This book was not for me. Ugh. The Ladies of Grace Adieu, and Other Stories by Susanna Clarke. Audiobook. Just a lot of fun going back into the world of Jonathan Strange. I really want her to write a prequel with The Raven King. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I loved Rocky and the ending. Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez. Still on the lookout for the perfect doctor romance. This one was enjoyable and mostly accurate.
December:
Mister Magic by Kiersten White. Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper. Gwen and Art Are Not in Love by Lex Croucher. Paladin’s Grace, Paladin’s Strength, Paladin’s Hope by T. Kingfisher. Reread these in anticipation of the release of her latest Saints of Steel’s book. Just excellent world building and romance and humor. Know My Name by Chanel Miller. Book club book. Harrowing memoir, but what I really appreciated was the description of how the justice system is so awful for victims. Paladin’s Faith by T. Kingfisher. I cannot wait for the other 3 books. Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez, the sequel to Part of Your World. I liked this one better and it was almost the doctor romance that I’ve been craving. The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan. I’d read it if you like dystopian novels, but I’m still grousing about how the villains were single, childless women. A Restless Truth by Freya Marske. Reread. I liked it better than the first time, maybe because I skipped over a lot of the romance (it’s a trope that I just don’t like). Carry on by Rainbow Rowell. Reread, audiobook. The audiobook was a lot of fun and I’ve forgotten a lot of details in the last 5+ years. A Power Unbound by Freya Marske. A satisfying conclusion to the trilogy, but the first book was definitely the best of them all. Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree. The prequel to Legends & Lattes, which I adored last year, and I think I liked this one even better.

Name: Leigh Madison Age: 36 Town Occupation: Stable Hand Previous Occupation: Horse Trainer Redwood Resident Length: 1 month Faceclaim: Aly Michalka
Bullet Points:
Leigh almost lost Allison when she was giving birth. Allison was almost a whole month early and her aunt didn’t think she was going to make it. Because of this, Leigh is very protective of her daughter.
Back on the ranch in Fredricksburg, she had started a relationship with a guy named Mark. He had lost his wife in the initial outbreak and they grew close. Mark would also become the security guy who would come back infected
Jasmine survived the journey to Redwood and is now stabled at the Redwood farm. But Jasmine is not the only animal in their family. Leigh was also able to save and bring along the town cat from back home - a Siamese cat named Luna. Allison loves the cat and Leigh could not leave without her daughter’s kitty.
Biography:
Leigh Madison was born and raised in Terrell, Texas. Her dad worked on a ranch as a cowboy and by proxy, she was raised up on it too. It should not have come to a surprise that she would fall in love with the horses and riding. When she was six she was given her first horse, a white Arabian filly that she affectionately named Jasmine. She grew up with Jasmine and trained her when she wasn’t at school. She would go to horse shows. Riding was her world. When she grew up, she knew she wanted to be a horse trainer. So that’s what she did. When she was sixteen her dad took her to the ranch he worked on and the owner agreed to give her a job there in the stables and help train her to be just that - a horse trainer.
She worked there for years, learning everything there was to offer about horses and how to work with them and take care of them. Her mother, of course, wanted her daughter to go to college, so she disappeared for a few years, going off to major in biology and focus on animal care. Leigh felt that if she could focus her studies on animals, namely horses, maybe she could double as a horse vet. All the better to know for when she went back to the farm to train horses. But when she got back, something happened that she did not at all expect.
The owner of the ranch had passed and now, there was a new owner. The guy was a complete scrub and knew absolutely nothing about how to raise horses. Because of this, they had brought in someone from the outside to help with the horses - a man by the name of Alex Brooks. At first, Leigh didn’t like him. He was doing the job that she should be doing. After all, she had basically been raised on that Ranch so why hadn’t they given her the job? She was definitely hard-headed and a bit antagonistic towards him, but after working with him, she started to see him in a different light. He really cared for horses, much like her and she could respect that. In fact, she found herself even starting to like him. But he was dating the owner’s niece and she was not about to get in between that at all. Best not bite the hand that feeds you. So she was happy to stay just friends with him. Even if she did want more.
She was stabling Jasmine for the night when she came across Alex looking rather heartbroken. He revealed to her that the owner’s niece had been cheating on him. Not wanting to see her best friend so down, she took him out to make him feel better….and then the next morning, she woke up in his bed. She only meant for it to be the one night, but then they kept sleeping with each other and, well, she was enjoying it. At least, until she found out she was pregnant. But this was a good thing, right? She could tell Alex and maybe things could become more between them. Leigh made a plan and went to tell him, but he broke the news that he was leaving to West Virgnia after the owner decided to shut down the ranch. She couldn’t tell him - that wouldn’t be fair to him. So she saw him off. When people asked who the father was, she would say it was a guy she met at a bar and had moved to take care of his family. It wasn’t a total lie but she didn’t want someone who knew Alex to reach out and tell him.
Leigh had a hard time finding work as a horse trainer given that she was pregnant so she moved in with her aunt on her ranch down by Fredricksburg. Within a few months, the news started to break - an infectious outbreak. Leigh and her aunt quickly gathered all their family on their ranch and prepared themselves for the worst which inevitably came to pass. They built up their ranch like a compound and started to take in people who had also survived. Leigh gave birth to her daughter who she named Allison. Her daughter may never meet her father so she wanted her to have at least a little bit of him. For the next few years, they ran the town and things were looking okay. At least, until they weren’t.
One of the security team came back and had been infected. They tried to contain him but it didn’t work. Leigh was forced to watch as her parents were torn apart by the zombie and became infected themselves. She saddled up Jasmine, packed herself and Allison up and rode as far away as she could. She wound up heading East, believing that if there was a chance that Alex had survived he might be somewhere in West Virginia. It took months but soon, she happened upon Redwood. For the past month she has been settling herself and her daughter into the new town and preparing to face Alex and introduce him to his daughter.

What’s your favourite headcanon about Aladdin?
My favourite headcanon about Aladdin?
Woo. That's a doozy of a question.
Honestly, I don't have a lot of headcanons for my boy.
Only 20 Like that's not a lot, lol. Forgive my rambling, I'll get to my point in just a moment.
Okay, so... if we take into account the 20 headcanons I do have for my beautiful little Street Rat, I think it's either number 17.
17. Aladdin often feels like he has to prove himself to everyone because they all see him as a dishonest, thieving street rat who would rather steal than do an honest day's work, when really, they just never gave him a chance because he didn't have a father, whom they figured would 'teach him the right way to be'. He doesn't like stealing, but he does it because he has no other means of survival, since he has no job to earn money to buy food and no one would give him an honest chance.
Or number 19.
19. Genie gave Aladdin his lamp as a wedding present and told him to keep it because he was the first master to treat him like he was a real person and that, no matter where he was, home would always be with his friends. And even though it was for both Aladdin and Jasmine, Aladdin carried it on his person for the rest of his life(credit to aviscaptum for thinking of this headcanon).
These two headcanons are kind of central to how Al lives his life. Considering that he and Abu have been alone for so long and so much of their lives have been spent stealing to survive, or going hungry, it's a desperate fight for everything. The first headcanons, as well, informs the second. After all, Genie was Aladdin's first friend outside of Abu and Carpet(Jasmine can't count for this because they barely had any time to get to know each other before he became 'Prince Ali'), and he spent so much of his time trying to impress Jasmine because of the first headcanon, trying to prove he was worthy of whatever their relationship could be, even while he was lying to her about who he was, and it pushes all of those insecurities down on him. He's always looking to improve upon himself and impress and prove to those he cares about that he is worthy of what he is now trying to be.
What else can a former Street Rat turned Prince Consort do?

Blog Post #3 Disney Aladdin in contrast to- the original version of Aladdin
In this blog post I am going to discuss the animated Disney film ‘Aladdin’ in contrast to the original story of Aladdin. Here are some of the things I noticed:
In the animated film, Princess Jasmine was enamored with Aladdin before Aladdin became ‘Prince Ali of Ababwa’. Whereas in the original story, the Princess chooses the other Prince instead of Aladdin to which is a more considerable suitor for the Princess.
In the animated film Jafar was a contender for princess Jazmin’s heart and not because he truly wanted her but rather for his own selfish desire to rule Agrabah.
Another interesting catch I found was that, in the original tale of Aladdin, a sorcerer tricks Aladdin into believing he is some long lost uncle looking to connect and want a relationship when that is far different from Disney’s version of Aladdin. In the original story of Aladdin, the sorcerer who lies to Aladdin claiming to be his uncle, has zero connection to Aladdin- it is completely random it seems. Whereas in Disney’s Aladdin, Jafar arrests and captures Aladdin because Aladdin is well known for being a good thief. Making him the best person to retrieve the lamp.
In the original story, Aladdin makes the wish to the Genie every night that the princess’ groom be thrown into the toilet every night and that the princess’ bed be flown out and brought to him in attempts to stop their marriage from being consummated. This is very vindictive and it makes sense why it was not included in Disney’s version of Aladdin. As Disney romanticizes many of their stories’ plots and features in order to accommodate the young audience that it is directed towards. For example, in Disney’s Aladdin, Aladdin is humble and kind. He steals only what he needs- and barely anything of that and gives back to the poor or other’s that are more unfortunate.
Ohhh and here's a thought: Maybe there is a correlation between the original version of Aladdin and Disney’s version of Aladdin… because in the film Aladdin by Disney, the Genie outlines the non-negotiable rule that Aladdin cannot wish to make someone fall in love with him whereas in the original story while Aladdin may not have made that wish, there is still that connection of the two stories’ difference in plot. So, even though in the original story Aladdin didn't directly use the wishes to make the princess fall in love with him, he was still very vindictive by giving the Princess no other option. As Aladdin makes it to where she has no choice but to end up marrying him… and stay in her bed while it gets flown out… and watch her groom be thrown into a toilet… which ultimately isolates the Princess to Aladdin and Aladdin only. Aladdin in Disney’s version is the polar opposite when we look at character. As he would not use his gift to be vindictive or forcefully take advantage of Princess Jasmine.
They also limit the amount of wishes in the Disney version which I prefer. This eliminates the option for Aladdin to take advantage of the Genie and Princess Jasmine compared to the original story. Where Aladdin has unlimited amounts of wishes to do what he pleases for as many years as he wishes, holding onto the Genie and getting everything he wants by being selfish and vindictive.
What confuses me though is the motive from the sorcerer guy in the original story. I mean.. what led him to prey on Aladdin… could it have been a choice just at random? What’s that connection haha.. I guess we'll never know. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

the  youngest  of  the  previous  generation  of  serretts  by  a  wide  margin  ,  and  as  a  result  had  an  isolating  position  in  the  family  hierarchy  ;  she  frequently  yearned  for  attention  and  affection  as  a  result  , most of all from her notoriously cold mother .  from  an  early  age  ,  she  developed  a  penchant  for  adapting  to  others  in  order  to  get  them  to  like  her  —  some  might  say  she's  fickle  for  it  ,  but  catering  her  personality  and  interests  to  those  of  other  people  did  help  her  make  lasting  friends  ,  in  the  end  .  both  of  serena's  parents  passed  within  the  year  of  her  thirteenth  birthday  ,  lord  vernon  in  a  hunting  accident  and  lady  akira  from  compounding  health  issues  .  afterwards  ,  her  eldest  brother  joji  and  his  wife  took  her  in  as  their  ward  ,  and  though  both  were  clear  she  was  joji's  sister  as  she  always  had  been  ,  many  outside  the  serrett  household  regarded  her  as  their  sixth  child  .  traveled  around  westeros  on - and - off  for  years  until  her  betrothal  to  her now - husband  was  finalized  .
HEADCANONS .
lady  akira  was  an  austere  and  churlish  woman  ,  and  despite  her  clear  intelligence  and  political  prowess  ,  was  divisive  at  court  .  serena  herself  always  had  a  difficult  relationship  with  her  mother  —  she  often  thought  akira  resented  her  ,  a  belief  that  has carried  through  from the  day  she  passed  and  beyond  .
a  serrett  through  and  through  ,  she  takes  great  pride  in  the  house  she  was  born  into  ,  though her  ego  may not be as noticeable as the one signature of house serrett . instead  , hers mostly  manifests  as  vanity  :  both  a  knowledge  that  she's  beautiful  and  a willingness to  use  that  beauty  to  her  advantage  ,  and  a  dedication  to  looking her best at  all  times  .
though once  content  with  being  perceived  as  vapid  and  naive  (  her  nickname  "  the  diamond  of  silverhill  "  is  more  of  a  nod  to  her  apparent  lack  of  substance  than  a  compliment  )  ,  since  becoming  the ruling  lady  of  karhold  ,  she  finds  her  image  hinders  more  often  than  it  helps  .  she's  beginning  to  think  her  mother  might  have  had  a  point  ,  being  the  way  she  was  .
the  move  to  the  north  for  her  marriage  was  difficult  ,  to  say  the  least  .  not  only  was  the  journey  harrowing  ,  but  much  of  the  world  as  she  knew  it  left  after  the  festivities  were  over  .  but  ,  knowing  her  brother  chose  her  to  help  forge  their  family's  latest  alliance  ,  because  of  her  ability  to  adapt  ,  serena  publicly  held  her  head  high  and  did  her  best  to  settle  into  her  new  life  as  a  northwoman  —  though  behind  closed  doors  ,  she  struggled  for  months .
fond of plants and flowers . she's been gardening  since  she  was  a  girl  ,  and  bonded  with  her  late  mother  through  learning  to  prune  ,  maintain  ,  and  cultivate  potted trees .

WWW Wednesday
1. What are you currently reading?
I just started Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I saw the movie The Martian, but I've never read the book, so this is a first for this author.
I've started Sweet Like Jasmine by Bonnie Gray for my "facebook friend recommendation." It's a short book, only 250 pages, and it's exceedingly Christian and Christian self help and I think it's going to be a slog.
I'm still listening to The Ladies of Grace Adieu by Susanna Clarke. I'm about 2/3 of the way through it and I love it.
2. What have you recently finished reading?
The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher - this one started out really great. It was definitely more fantasy based than horror, but the beginning was really creepy. I loved the characters, especially. But then there were chapters of a copied manuscript (apparently it was a short story by Lovecraft) in the middle and it started to drag. Rather disappointing.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarrow. I managed to get over the hump of unbelievability and enjoyed the rest of the story. It is not high literature and it's trope-y but in a good way. The spice was just right too. Iron Flame has a really long waitlist, but the audiobook is available so I might be listening to that next.
The Magical Language of Others by EJ Koh. NPR did a write up on her debut novel, but it wasn't available at the library, so I looked at her other books and this one fit in with my unofficial theme of "Asian women write about their complex relationships with their mothers" of 2023. It was a quick read but I found the writing to be confusing in places and lacking in emotional growth.
Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood. Have I been avoiding reading Ali Hazelwood’a novels because she wrote Reylo fanfic even though they are about smart nerdy women? Yes. But this one came available at the library and I was in the mood for something light and I found it charming and nerdy and engaging. Even though Nolan Sawyer is just Adam Driver by another name. I do have to protest with it being labeled as Young Adult. The protagonist has graduated high school and her love interest in a few years older. It’s definitely more of a new adult novel.
3. What will you be reading next?
Well a bunch of books all came available at the library at the same time, so I'm shifting around a little.
Part of Your World by Abby Jimenz. My friend has highly recommended these books and the main character is a doctor. Will I finally find my goldilocks of a medical romance?
A Power Unbound by Freya Marske. I really loved the first books of the trilogy so I'm excited.
Mister Magic by Kiersten White. I heard that she wrote this book as a way for her to process leaving the LDS church, so of course, that got me interested.
Know My Name by Chantel Miller. Book club book.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - still on the list. I've managed to avoid spoilers from the movie so far.
