Day 27 of the #365feministselfie today we got to welcome home new members to the Alpha Chapter of the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority. I am so proud of what the Alpha Chapter accomplished this weekend, and I am so lucky to work with such amazing advisors and a couple of my best friends in the world. #alphasigmatau #advisorlife #alumnaelife https://www.instagram.com/p/BnzqEoMnqV5i1mZsGlHucYce_CqV0urwB4PIjE0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=p2az9grmyi49

Introducing: Kathy Papp, Ohio District President
Picture it – Berea, OH, September 28, 1992 – I received a bid to join Zeta Tau Alpha. As I am looking back over the *25* years since ZTA came into my life, I realized I can’t believe 2 things:  1 – How fast the time has gone 2 – The experiences I’ve had as a result of accepting that bid as a Freshman at Baldwin-Wallace College (note, there was a hyphen in the name and were a “College” back then!)
The words on my “pledge” workbook (yes, this was before we were called “New Members”) said “Zeta is Forever”. I had no idea that this would actually apply to me and figured “well, it’s been around since 1898, so yeah, ‘forever’.”  I remember hearing “You’ll be an alumna longer than you’ll be a collegian!” I don’t know that I could have ever anticipated they journey I’d take with ZTA. I took a few years off from Zeta after graduating – as I figured out what I was doing – Grad School? Working Full-Time? How about both?! As I settled into my career, and I continued getting invitations to events, I attended a “Coffee and Conversation” at a local coffee shop (that has since become a Starbucks!) I saw a few familiar faces, and decided “why not?” I paid dues, and helped at a couple of collegiate events participated in a Race for the Cure. In some ways, I think I was hesitant because I wasn’t sure I knew what I was doing to really help out. This continued on for another year or two, and then at a kick-off event in 2001, I saw that the women who were serving as officers were newer grads, and people I remembered meeting at some alumnae/collegiate events. I had such a good time at that event and decided “OK – I’m going to do this!” and offered to help with coordinating our Race for the Cure participation. Following the events of 9/11, with concern about gathering in public places with large crowds, the event was unfortunately canceled, but I realized I could do this – I could help out and I really enjoyed it. From there, I helped as Alumnae/Collegiate chair, and then moved into serving on the Exec board – Membership, then Programming, and eventually President. I got so much more out of being an officer than I ever could have expected – leadership skills, event planning experience, and most importantly, the friendships I made with people whom I never would have otherwise crossed paths.
When an opportunity led me to a job in Cincinnati, one of the first things I took into consideration when deciding to accept was “we have Zeta alumnae chapters there” and I had an immediate connection to our sisterhood, in a city where I otherwise knew no-one. They welcomed me, looked out for me, and included me. At the time, ZTA was invited to give an Extension Presentation at the University of Cincinnati, hoping to reactivate our Alpha Eta chapter, and I was invited to attend. I’ve never before experienced anything like this, and I met many National Officers who were in attendance at the event. The only time I’ve met some of these women in the past was at a Convention, so it was a unique opportunity to be present. My work with the Cincinnati Crown chapter in helping them boost their membership led me to being invited to serve on a National Committee. As I’ve continued to build my “Zeta resume”, I realized how much I took out of these experiences, so I kept giving back. Now in my role as District President, I’m taking the things that I’ve learned along the way, and helping our chapters set goals, and plans to attain them.
So while the time has gone by quickly, it’s filled with a lot of experiences that I wouldn’t have otherwise had, if it weren’t for ZTA. Not all of it was easy – there were certainly times of frustration – too many things to do and not enough time, and disappointment – working so hard on an idea, to not see it yield the results we hoped. But the good times have always outweighed those things, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
I encourage you to take a chance on your alumnae chapters – when you get an invite, see a Facebook post, or read the latest issue of “Themis” –ask yourself “why not?” You might be surprised as to what you may contribute and what you could take away :-)

Okay, so this has been posted by my peeps in this pic already. But I would be amiss to not have it be my day 20 of the #365feministselfie challenge. These two encourage me and push me to be better than I was the day before, especially on sorority Sundays. Part of my life squad, I love these two, and I especially love how I look in this photo 🤷🏻‍♀️ #sororitysunday #advisorlife #alphasigmatau #alumnaelife https://www.instagram.com/p/BniF4uwHwdKmla4GPD_llz9gpd0hfrblnsqvww0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1m0gjqkm1lme3

Happy to have spent the weekend with the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority. A lot of my weekend included conversations, setting expectations and goals for the year, and a lot of what you see in this picture: this view and reading. It was very much a get away for me with these like-minded sisters who are more than friends #alphasigmatau #alumna #alumnaelife #chapteradvisor
