Nestlé now also offers coffee without aluminum and plastic.

The mountain of capsules makes many consumers feel guilty, but recycling is still too laborious for many.

But compostability is more complicated than it seems. Against the capsule guilt feeling: a year after the launch of the Migros Coffee B balls, Nestlé is also trying out ecologically more advantageous coffee portions.

When Migros[1] announced the biggest innovation in the company's history a year ago and finally presented a compostable coffee ball, the retailer was laughed at. With the EU's announcement that it would ban capsules made of aluminum and plastic[2], Migros' invention suddenly appeared in a slightly different light.

But a good idea alone does not guarantee good business. Migros is keeping a low profile about sales in the first year after the start of sales and speaks of “impressive figures”. So far, 200,000 Coffee-B machines have been sold across Europe - mainly in Switzerland, Germany and France. The company admits there were teething problems - after the launch there were reports of technical problems, delivery problems or criticism of the coffee.

But that's part of bringing a completely new system onto the market. The task is to “further develop the machines technically and the coffee balls in terms of taste”. Migros is also in discussions with various companies that are interested in capsule-free coffee portions.

Cannibalisation of the Migros capsule system (Delizio[3]) and the Nespresso-compatible Migros capsules was only observed to a very small extent. However, Migros does not specify how significant the business with the new balls is in terms of sales compared to the previous systems. On the other hand, since its launch, one in ten coffee machines sold in Switzerland has been a Coffee-B device.

Many capsules end up in the trash

And now its competitor Nestlé is also stepping up in terms of ecological packaging for coffee and has, on the one hand, brought compostable Nespresso capsules onto the market, and on the other hand, the company is launching a new machine in Switzerland with compostable pods instead of the plastic capsules for the Nescafé Dolce Gusto system.

However, the Neo system[4] is not entirely new; it has been on sale in Brazil since last November, and it is also already on sale in France, the largest Dolce Gusto market. The development of the new machine, which can also be operated with a smartphone, took around five years. The Dolce Gusto system runs under the Nescafé brand, but it works with ground coffee and not instant coffee.

Until now, Nestlé had always argued that packaging played a minor role in the environmental balance compared to the coffee itself. The most important factors are the coffee cultivation and the method of preparation. That's why capsule systems, which require less of the raw material coffee per cup than, for example, filter coffee or fully automatic coffee machines, are superior to other types of preparation in terms of CO2 consumption.

But with the introduction of the new packaging, Nestlé is obviously - apart from the impending capsule ban in the EU - also striving to relieve customers of the feeling of guilt that affects them when disposing of (or not disposing of) their daily mountains of capsules.

Even if Nestlé likes to advertise the recycling cycle of its aluminum capsules, [5]the fact is that a large proportion of aluminum capsules in Switzerland are not recycled, but end up in the trash - over a third.

Not all compost is the same

That should change with the compostable Nespresso capsules and the new Dolce Gusto pods. Nestlé advertises that these can be composted at home.

The key word is “at home”, because various Swiss municipalities do not accept the paper Nestlé capsules or pods in the waste collection because they contain a biopolymer[6] layer and decompose more slowly than is sometimes permitted in industrial composting plants. In the city of Zurich, for example, Migros coffee balls are explicitly allowed to be disposed of with organic waste, but coffee capsules containing bioplastic are not.

It remains to be seen how many non-compost owners will stick to this or send the new Nestlé capsules - like the aluminum capsules - back to the company's recycling service.

In Germany, for example, Dallmayr[7] switched back to aluminum in its main range due to the long composting time of the bioplastic capsules.

Nestlé's market power

How quickly larger quantities of compostable Nestlé capsules or pods are produced depends on how much the range is expanded or, in the case of Dolce Gusto, on how many customers actually want to buy a new machine again. Because the Neo coffee pods are not compatible with the previous Dolce Gusto machines. And buying a new device instead of a machine that still works makes little ecological sense.

But Vontobel[8] analyst Jean-Philippe Bertschy points out that Nestlé's power in the capsule coffee sector should not be underestimated. For example, by introducing Starbucks brand capsules, which, unlike Nespresso capsules, are also available in supermarkets, the group regained around 20 percent of the market with Nespresso clones within a relatively short period of time.

While the L.U.C.1.A.N chassis is exclusively used by the Units, the primary chassis that are most commonly available are S.T.E.V.3. and A.L.3.X. Chassis. (As of the addition of new default skins, there are many others, but we'll focus on these two for now.)

S.T.E.V.3.: Standard Titanium Endoskeleton, Version 3. This chassis is designed to be hardier and more rugged compared to the L.U.C.1.A.N model. It has enhanced strength and durability, however is heavier than the others. It's also more easily repairable, using standard, somewhat simpler components.

A.L.3.X.: Aluminium Lattice, 3rd eXplication. This chassis is designed to be faster and lighter than any others. It has a much higher top speed and is much more agile. It's also easier to fly and swim with. Like the S.T.E.V.3. model, it is also much easier to repair than the L.U.C.1.A.N model, once again using standardised, simpler components.

All other Android chassis models scale strength and dexterity between these two extremes, with exception to the L.U.C.1.A.N. model, which is used as a prototyping platform before upgrades are integrated into any others.

After an employee or customer has selected their chosen chassis, a 3D scan of their body is uploaded to the database. There the occupant can pick and choose preferred features, including adjustment or complete removal of specific body parts, as well as the addition of aesthetic items such as tattoos, visual representations of scars, or even cosmetic attachments such as horns or tails.

After this is done, an initial model is fabricated for inspection. If everything is up to the occupants preferences and standards, the transferal process can commence.

The occupants original body is placed in Cryogenic Suspension, a neural interface is attached at the base of the neck and then the occupants consciousness is transfered to the Android.

Unless the occupant has reason to leave the dimension the facility is located in, there is a constant digital uplink back to the host body. In the event that this up link is broken, the Cryogenic Pod will pause conscious brain function of the host, while the Android body will carry a separate consciousness and save the memories to an internal databank called a Red Box. Once the uplink is restored, the memory is downloaded to the host, after which normal brain activity is restored.

“So,” Rebekah says, sauntering into Caroline’s space with a smile on her face that betrays her anxiety to those who know her well enough, “I may have fucked up.” “You’re admitting to having fucked up?” Kol asks, raising his eyes from a grimoire. “Sound the alarms; she’s been replaced by a pod person.” “Letting you read that book was a mistake,” Rebekah growls. “I don’t disagree,” Caroline sighs. She rubs at her temples. Vampires are unable to get migraines, and yet … “What happened?” “Right,” Rebekah says. “So, I was talking to Nik, and—” “Did he not want to hear about your exploits with that red-headed broad? Because if so, I can—” Rebekah smiles sweetly. Too sweetly. “Shut up, Kol, or I’ll drive your aluminium bat up your a—” “Bekah!” Caroline waves her arms about like a lunatic. “You were saying?” She sighs. “Right.  EPISODE 2  -  ‘’I ‘LL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN’’

I was sitting on stairs, taking my time to let emotions decrease.

- So… are you feeling any better now? – the little alien girl asked me after few minutes.

- Yeah. I guess so. – I answered. I looked at her and asked a question of my own:  Who are you anyway?

- Oh, right! I’m sorry.I haven’t been given an occacion to introduce myself. My name is Loo-nah, I am the princess of planet Formika. Or at least, I was…

- Huh? What do you mean?

- I landed on this planet a couple of hours ago. I don’t know how long I’ve been travelling through space in my escape pod.

- Escape pod?

- Yes. I had to leave my beautiful, precious kingdom. It was… - the alien’s voice started breaking. I could see tears appearing in her eyes.

I didn’t say a word here. I was too afraid to ask Loo-nah about what happened with her home planet. However, it didn’t take long before she brought herself to tell me the whole story. I supposed it would be about a natural disaster or something similar. But no. That was something much more unexpected. And more shocking too.

- It was invaded by the Irken Empire!

My eyes went wide and my lower  jaw fell down, revealing my teeth and tongue.

- What did you just say?! – I asked with a tiny, microscopic dose of disbelief.

- I said - my kingdom was invaded by the Irkens. All that happened so sudddenly,so quickly… I barely remember anything. But I don’t want to remember…! I dont want to…!

This confession made her cry even harder.

That left me completely speechless. I got lost in thoughts again.

- ‘’ This can’t be right. But… if it was a dream indeed, I’d wake up at the moment I found myself in that old, cluttered room. I have no fu**ing idea what’s going on here, but I guess I have to help princess Loo-nah somehow. And what about that body-freezing premonition and my pocket knife turning into a some sort of sword-thingy to kill the monstrous bear? I… I think I should try out something.’’

I stood up, unzipped my backpack and drew out one of empty beer cans, the same I was drinking from right before I found the mysterious, rainbow-colored gem. It was crushed, as usually. I raised my hand I focused on the piece of aluminium. Within literally few seconds, right in front of my eyes, an empty and crushed can , came back to its original shape. It was heavy and closed too, just like brought straight from supermarket. I bended the can tab, opening it. I sniffed, inhaling blissful smell of fresh beer. I took a little swallow to realize that it was the most delicious beer I’ve ever had in my life. I smiled and kept drinking. With every next swallow I’ve been getting more and more convinced. Still unaware of true nature of that fabulous little stone, I came to a conclusion that one specific object must have brought me to the universe of ‘’Invader Zim’’, meanwhile giving me some kind of magical powers. I drank all beer and refilled the can.

- Excuse me, maam, but… what are you doing? – asked princess Loo-nah, not crying anymore.

- Oh! Sorry! Almost forgot about you. – I said with embarrassment. – I’m just… Trying something.

- What is it you’re trying, if I can ask?

- Well… - I went silent, hesitant if I should tell her the whole truth.

- Please, tell me. – she persisted.

- Ok. But it’s a pretty long story. Besides, I’m not sure if you’re gonna believe me.

- Please. I really want to hear you out.

- Ok. If you insist… Oh, and by the way – you told me your name, but I did not tell you mine. I am Solitaire.

- Solitaire?

- Yeah. And… The most important thing is – I’m not from around here. I mean – not from this world.

And I told princess Loo-nah about how I found a small, colorful ball in a forest before I’ve been somehow teleported to her world  and given magical powers of some sort too.

- That sounds pretty familiar. – she said. – Wait a minute… Judging by description of a ball you claim you found, it’s very, very similar to fantasites.

- Fantasites? What are fantasites?

- Luminous and twinkling precious stones of all colors of the universe. It is – or rather was – Formika’s greatest pride and joy. Fantasites couldn’t be found anywhere outside my dear planet.

I pulled the talked-about ball out of my backpack to show it to princess Loo-nah.

- Yes, it must be a fantasite! – little alien girl almost shouted.

- But how the heck is this even possible? How did this thing find its way to my dimension, let alone to the forest I visit every now and then?

- I don’t know. Really.

- Do fantasites have any special properties? Like - I dunno – teleportation or gifting one with magic powers?

- I’m not sure. I think my mom has told me something about fantasites once.But what was that? Hold up…

- Alright then. Take your time. I’m going to provide few more experiments.

As I said this phrase, I drank the whole second beer, put the fantasite down next to my bag with GIR’s image on and pulled my GIR plushie out of my backpack.
