Les voiliers en aluminium ont fait rêver des générations entières de marins, plaisanciers et aventuriers. Ces bateaux sont devenus des symboles du bateau de voyage. Quelle est histoire de ces voiliers et quels chantiers, aujourd’hui, proposent des constructions aluminium ? L’aluminium, pour la plaisance a été une révolution. Le choix de ce matériau a été plébiscité, dès les années 60-70, par de nombreux chantiers. L’arrivée du polyester a modifié la donne, dans les années 70. Cependant, le voilier en aluminium a toujours conservé sa place de favori dans le choix de nombreux acquéreurs de bateau. Avant de devenir le symbole du voilier de voyage, l’aluminium a été très lié à la course au large et à la régate. En effet, l’aluminium n’a pas toujours été associé à l’image du dériveur intégral de voyage. Retour sur cette folle aventure du voilier en aluminium.

Histoire des voiliers en aluminium

L’aluminium a été découvert en 1807, par Humphrey Davy. En 1854, un procédé est créé, par Henri Sainte Claire Deville, pour en produire. Ses qualités techniques et sa légèreté ont vite été remarqué et l’aluminium commence à intéresser architectes navals et chantiers. Les premiers chantiers à construire des voiliers en aluminium sont alors des Néerlandais. De la course au large... C’est auprès des coureurs au large et du monde de la régate que l’aluminium fait sa place. En 1895, la coque de Defender, lors de la Coupe de l’America, est construite en aluminium. Ce qui lui va bien puisque le bateau gagne la Cup. De nombreux syndicats feront le même choix jusqu’au milieu des années 80. Dans les années 60, c’est un français, Eric Tabarly, qui s’intéresse à l’aluminium. Pen Duick 3 sera construit dans ce matériau. Enfin, Marc Pajot remporte la Route du Rhum, en 1982, avec Elf Aquitaine, lui aussi, en aluminium. ... à la plaisance Mais l’aluminium va vite intéresser le monde de la plaisance et les architectes navals. Là encore sa solidité et sa légèreté intéressent plusieurs architectes qui vont régulièrement l’utiliser. Ce matériau va séduire les candidats aux grands voyages pour les mêmes raisons. Il va vite devenir le symbole de la voile aventure pour de nombreux marins. Dans les années 70, Jean Marie Finot va donner naissance à des voiliers symboles de transat avec le Brise de Mer et le Rêve d'Antilles. De son côté, Philippe Harlé signe les Beaujolais et autres Romanée. Romanée qui était d’abord destiné à la régate et la course d’ailleurs. On peut encore citer le Zoufri ou les magnifiques succès du Chatam et du Vulcain, de Gilbert Caroff. Dominique Presles a, de son côté, dessiné, en 1976, le Pen Duick 600, un petit voilier de croisière côtière. Mais l’aluminium restera cantonné aux gros voiliers, pour une question de coût.

Pourquoi l’aluminium pour des voiliers ?

Nous pouvons donc constater que l’aluminium a convaincu de nombreux architectes et chantiers navals depuis plus d’un siècle. Mais pourquoi ? Ce matériau a plusieurs avantages qui ont fait la différence, dès ses débuts dans le nautisme. Si le coût est aujourd’hui un frein pour la construction de petits voiliers, l'utilisation de l'aluminium trouve toute sa cohérence pour des unités de plus de 12 mètres. Je parle de plaisance. Pour les professionnels, le rapport au coût ne sera pas le même. Pour commencer, à ses débuts, l’aluminium a rapidement remplacé le bois moulé pour sa solidité et sa légèreté. C’est pour cela qu’il a été utilisé en régate et en course au large très rapidement. Il gardera encore un avantage poids face au polyester monolytique, dans les années 80. Par la suite, il a été considéré comme une excellente alternative à l’acier. En effet, si l’aluminium ne permet pas de se lancer dans une construction amateur et qu’il est plus cher que l’acier, il a d’autres avantages. Il est beaucoup plus léger que l’acier tout d’abord. Ensuite, et c’est sans doute son point fort, en grande croisière, il ne se fissure pas lors d’un choc. Bon, tout est relatif quand même. En effet, l’aluminium est un matériau souple et qui s'étire jusqu'à un certain point. Les spécialistes vont peut-être me reprendre sur les mots... C'est-à-dire que lors d’un choc, qu'il absorbe mieux que l’acier, il ne va pas se fissurer mais se déformer. Pour vous donner une idée, face à un choque, il est capable de s’allonger de 20%. C’est juste impressionnant par rapport au bois ou au stratifier, par exemple. Cependant, il n’est pas élastique. Cela signifie qu’il ne va pas reprendre sa forme initiale ensuite. Si cette caractéristique a des avantages en navigation, c’est aussi le cas en construction navale. En effet, l’aluminium va pouvoir être travaillé pour construire des coques en forme.

Certains modèles sont devenus des références comme l’Ovni 345. Plus de 1500 voiliers construits par Alubat naviguent sur toutes les mers du monde aujourd’hui.
