My Review of Dive!!

Pinky. I know his real name is Yamada, but I like calling him Pinky. Sure 50% of it is because he’s voiced by Tomokazu Sugita, but that’s a good enough reason. Although I do have to chuckle a bit that people want to change the nickname to something more "Camel-toe" since dude decided to change speedo colors. DISLIKED CHARACTER: Eh, there were a few characters that annoyed me! Tomo’s friend Ryou got on my nerves with his endless pouting for half the series. Tomo’s brother as well for stealing his girlfriend. And the girlfriend Miu, of course! I’ll get to these two in the shipping category. But none of these characters aren’t on that level of dislikablity I normally put on this category. SHIPPING: *sighs* I feel like this category shouldn’t even exist. But, nooooo! This anime decides to give the main character a girlfriend. Tomo x Miu: From the get-go, we learn that these two are boyfriend and girlfriend. Like freshly new couple starting in the first episode! This felt very out of place due to their age (I don’t know, maybe it’s just me). But Tomo really didn’t seem that interested in being in a relationship and Miu seemed pushed into it by her friends. But there’s really only mention of this relationship in the first 2 episodes. And then it’s back to the main plot of Tomo diving and practicing. This whole thing comes to a boiling point when he learns that his younger brother, Hiroya stole Miu from under his nose. And these two are having a relationship behind Tomo’s back. Miu feels sad for betraying Tomo. But Hiroya shows no remorse for this dying relationship and felt it was right to steal Miu away from his brother. He even jokingly mentions that Tomo should pay more attention to his girlfriend or he’ll have to steal her away. And it happened! Hiroya says that he loves her more than Tomo ever could. Despite how shotty this relationship was, Tomo was so depressed by this news that he didn’t show up to practice for TWO WEEKS. I do feel sorry for Tomo for this circumstance. I really do. And I think his brother really pulled a dick-move! But I can’t really support this ship whatsoever. As for the rest of the cast, Okitsu has a girlfriend, and Fujitani never had a relationship. And while there was a hint that Fujitani would like one at one point of this series, it was never mentioned again. ENDING: Tomo and Fujitani end up in the running to be a part of the Olympic diving team for Japan. But in the end, Fujitani was the one chosen (no surprise there). And even better, now that Fujitani made it to the team, MDC will remain open. While tension does run high between many of the disenchanted teammates, some of them continue to train and get stronger with their dives. However, Fujitani is starting to feel a little less-than enthusiastic with his training and even starts ditching practice for no real reason (like saying his horoscope is warning him not to go through with anything risky). Fujitani decided that he wanted to do something…unorthodox. He gives up his set-in-stone position for the Olympic team to do another trial so that Tomo can get a second chance and Okitsu can get a fighting chance now that his injured back seems to be okay. But Fujitani is going to compete for this spot again. This does also put MDC back on the chopping block. Meanwhile, Coach Asaki will be going back to America once this whole training process is over. This struck a nerve with a lot of the divers (especially Tomo). But are at the same time striving for the top spot and improving day-by-day. But things seem to be getting worse for Fujitani. It almost seems like he’s on the brink of a Haru-sized meltdown right in the middle of a competition. His actions are starting to weigh heavy on him and it’s affecting his performance during the retrial. The problem is Fujitani, the big dumbass, was practicing the night before and now has a raging fever. So he wasn’t performing at his top peak. This leading to Fujitani blowing up at Coach Asaki! Then we learn Coach Asaki isn’t really leaving to go to America. Okitsu is going…to see a doctor about his injured back. Coach Asaki isn’t leaving. The boys are gonna dive and give it their all. Fujitani, while suffering from a fever pulled off a special dive in the end putting him at the top spot again. …that is until Tomo came. We don’t see Tomo’s dive, but apparently he is now one of Japan’s reps for the Tokyo Olympics. *sighs* This anime was boring. Yeah, hate to be blunt but it really couldn’t catch my attention, no matter how many shirtless high school boys and Tomokazu Sugitas you can throw my way. The story was just average and some of the outcomes for many of these characters were really farfetched. I feel like Okitsu’s addition on the anime was because it would be boring just watching Tomo and Fujitani, so let’s add this guy. The love aspect shouldn’t have been included, though I do feel bad for Tomo for getting the shit-deal because of his brother. But the series revolving around the concept of diving instead of just mere swimming relays was an interesting approach in the sports genre. But if you want to watch a swimming anime, I suggest Free! in a heartbeat. Currently, the only outlet to watch this anime is through Amazon’s Anime Strike.
