The over-the-top media provider is an online content provider that offers video streaming as a stand-alone product. OTT services subvert traditional media distribution networks, such as communication channels or cable television network operators. As long as you have access to an internet connection either domestically or through a cellular network you can access the full service at your leisure. OTT systems are normally monetized through paid subscriptions, but there are exceptions. For example, some OTT platforms may offer in-app purchases or advertisements.
Why is OTT Important
Highly desirable content at a minimal price: Video on demand services are widely regarded as a cost-effective alternative to traditional cable packages.
Genuine Content: In recent years, OTT providers such as Netflix and Amazon Prime had the advantage of the growing unique content that is exclusively available through their service. Platforms such as HBO Go and Disney+ also have preferential streaming licenses for previously televised content.
Multiple user integration: For years, watching cable television required a television set. Today, we can watch OTT content from a wide range of devices. Any account holder can enjoy the same OTT experience with a gaming console, smartphone, tablet, or smart TV.
Hindi content is generally considered to be supreme on OTT platforms; the regional content is not far behind when it comes to original and acquired media. Experts say that there has been an increase in the production of local regional content by almost all OTT players, which is driven by the need for storytelling and customized offerings for different market segments. The audience is also now more open to regional content, and language is no longer a barrier as it used to be. The OTT platforms are also helping in several ways. They make it possible for the audience to choose which was not available before, and the audience is also enjoying it, and so we see a spurt in OTT's regional content. According to the study, when it comes to translations (subtitles or dubbing), most people in India tend to favour to have foreign or regional content translated into English (71%), followed by Hindi (23%). Although most of them want English translations, about 2 in 33 people (7%) said they would recommend translations in their native language.
India is a mixture of different languages. To win over this lucrative industry, content creators need to locate as much as possible. Virtual players have a particularly great opportunity, as a lot of content, both regional and western, is being absorbed online. The data shows that there is a desire to find content in one's native language, and brands need to understand the needs and preferences of this set to expand their targeted audience. Smartphone penetration, coupled with the comfort of viewing multiple devices, is fuelling the audience's appetite to sample content. And with India being a multilingual country, this is a hotbed of opportunities. OTT players such as SonyLIV, ALTBalaji, and Viu are increasing their investment in regional language content production, while Amazon Prime Video is building a strong regional content base through various licensing agreements.
All major streaming services in India place regional markets at the heart of their expansion strategy. Over the last two years, regional competitions have been persistently guided by the over-the-top (OTT) ecosystem, and 2020 will not be an exception. This shift in the market is the result of various factors, such as the increasing affluence in the country, the increase in the infiltration of data and smartphones into rural areas, and the adoption of these data across a wide range of demographics on the market, including older generations and women. Thus, In the coming years, the OTT space in India will become incredibly competitive and attract various players with different business models.

Are there any itv shows available on mxplayer that you would recommend for a binge watching session?
I haven’t watched them yet but the YRF TV shows Rishta.com and Mahi Way are top of my list! And it seems to have a number of web shows (both MX originals and from other providers like AltBalaji, Vikram Bhatt, TVF, etc.) that seem kinda questionable, but could do for a day or two of mindless watching.
