My ADHD experience with comics
I've recently realized it is harder for me to concentrate on comics than on regular books. I came to the conclusion that my mind drifts away way more often when I'm looking at details of the art or absorbing the information of the overall design choices (lettering, paneling etc) of the comics I read, also reflecting upon the content of course. That goes especially for mainstream comics with all the interconnected lore, characters, teams because then I'm constantly fighting the desire to search for everything on the page and I mean EVERYTHING
I was reading Green Lantern then I realized I didn't know the color of Hal Jordan's eyes. Search it. Ok, blue, I thought it was brown. Back to the comics, Green Arrow appears. What is the color of his eyes... Search it. Green. Fascinating, but wait, here says that sometimes it's blue? Ok, back to the comics. Look at this juxtaposing panels, so cool. So colorful. Wait I don't remember what happened in the last page. Hm, I wonder if Ollie's eyes are blue or green in that Arrow show? Search it. Repeat
It's endless, sometimes it's easier, sometimes harder. With a regular book it can also be hard, but with other books I can often detect sooner when I'm drifting and force myself to concentrate again. There are less elements on the page and the path feels more straight-forward, word after word after word, paragraph next paragraph. In comics I can get lost in the elements. And as a result I have a harder time remembering what I read after reading it, which can be so frustrating... I know, it does not help that I tend to read too many comics at once, although I do the same with books and it is still easier to follow and remember their stories afterwards
An interesting thing is that I'm a teacher, reading and studying are part of my routine, and I don't feel as lost reading text books (thankfully) as I get reading comics. Concentrating is always challenging (I do drift more while studying certain subjects than others), but it seems like comic books are the hardest, getting me overstimulated easily, and I do wonder if other people with ADHD feel the same
