Told you guys I’d ramble in due time.

I absolutely adore Bravely Default 2. It came at a really bad time cos I can’t waste 70 hours on a jrpg, but well, it’s too late to be concerned about that now. And as is tradition with me obsessing over a new game / show / whatever, you’ll basically find a fullblown review disguised as ramblings right under the cut. Be aware that I’m gonna talk about EVERYTHING, so spoilers are a given. Some maybe even for the previous Bravely Default games.

Also, if you wanna talk about this game in any capacity, hit me up, I’m DESPERATE to talk more about it.

Just for reference on how long this is gonna be, I made a voice recording while driving to remember all the points I wanna make, and that recording is almost 2 hours long. I did cut it down but still, this is gonna be a lot.

I’ll start off with the things that actually bugged me about the game, since there are only 3 things that really bothered me. First of, I really don’t like that you can name Seth. He has too much personality to be a self insert and player integration is not that big of a part in the game that this decision can be justified. It wouldn’t bother me that much if it didn’t leave a bad mark on the ending. First of all, we were robbed of Gloria desperately shouting for Seth, which makes the impact work less, and it’s just so prevalent that the name can’t be said because you have all the normal sound design going. If they’d just let the credits still play I wouldn’t have batted an eye, but because every other sound comes in it’s so obvious they’re just silently shouting in this scene, which makes it look silly. Like I said, this decision is more a detriment than an addition, and it’s a shame it casts a shadow on an otherwise heartfelt ending.

Speaking about lost potential, the other thing that really bothers me is the lost potential in certain plot points and character conclusions. I mainly mean Adam and Edna here. Both of them have been built up to be these formidable foes but they just, die. If it was just Adam I’d be fine with it, since you expect Edna to backstab him and be the actual big bad of the story, but I cannot fathom why they dropped Edna this HARD. If not Edna herself, I don’t understand why we don’t get more of a reaction from the Fairies and especially Adelle. I mean, Edna was her sole reason she left for her journey in the first place, then Edna dies and that’s it? No part where she grieves for a second? No concern from the others about Adelle? Mind you, I haven’t finished all the Sidequests, so maybe there actually is one in which this is addressed, but I think even just a Party Chat after Bad End 1 would have been sufficient to show how Adelle suddenly feels about the loss of Edna. It would have made Bad End 2 / The Secret Ending even more impactful, because, yeah, of course, you kinda know Adelle isn’t going to turn her back on fairy kind, but one of the reasons she doesn’t leave is because if Enda didn’t get a happy ending, then she shouldn’t either. It would have been amazing foreshadowing if she showed this sentiment before this scene happened. Other than that, it’s a shame that we know so little about Edna, or rather, how she became “bad”. I get she’s supposed to be corrupted by the Night’s Nexus, but how did it even come to this? It can’t have been a gradual thing, after all, Adelle says Edna was always good natured and then just disappeared one day. Really would have loved seeing more of that plot point.

Ok, last gripe I have, some choices in the soundtrack and sound design. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the OST, and I will get to that, but damn, whatever Revo used for the lead instrument in Wiswald hurts my ears. It’s a really good track, but I always have to turn down my volume because these high pitched sounds physically hurt. And for sound design. Dude, the Night’s Nexus is the least threatening, nightmare fueled abomination that ever existed. I get that its growl is kinda supposed to be layered with Edna’s or sth, but it, it just sounds silly. If they went the route of just swinging between different voices or began distorting it from phase to phase, it would have been fine. But the choice they made really made an otherwise creepy design just absolutely silly.

Ok, enough jammering, on to the good stuff. Like I said, there’s going to be a lot, so I’ll try to be brief in each aspect.

Gameplay

I honestly like the new battle mechanics more than the old ones. This individual, turn based system feels way more dynamic and it’s easier to strategies in battles. Because nothing made me more angry than setting up for a heal and the enemy suddenly being faster than me and killing my healer. Now it’s easier to plan ahead a bit.

I also found myself experimenting more with the jobs. Not sure what it really is, but none of the party members leaning more towards certain types of jobs and the job leveling being way faster probably helped.

And I know some people get up in arms because the boss sometimes can be a real pain in the ass (looking at you pope dude), I still found it very interesting getting around counters or even using these counters as a benefit. As an example, I made Adelle my main physical fighter and gave her lots of counter abilities to help her profit from being countered by enemies themselves. Now, she can attack enemies, get countered, automatically evade that counter and earn a BP at the same time. Made a lot of boss fights way easier and fun to exploit.

Music

Ok, I will try my best to be really, really brief, because in my recording this part takes up almost 40 minutes. Anyways, Revo might have just become one of my absolute favorite composers ever. I don’t know what kind of magic he used, but I initially wasn’t that impressed with the OST, but every time I listened to it, I just fell in love harder and harder. Before getting into specifics, I wanna highlight the two things that made me love this OST overall. First of all, this soundtrack almost seems like a refinement of BD’s. While losing some of that fairytale vibe, it sounds even more fantasy now. And in contrast to the original, this almost sounds more balanced? Like, BD’s OST felt high energy throughout, BD2’s on the other hand manages to find a good balance between high and low energy pieces. Like, the character themes or battle themes are absolute hype, but the overworld themes are a lot calmer and easier to listen to while exploring. Second big point that makes this soundtrack amazing is that Revo is an absolute god at using emotional progression/storytelling and leitmotifs in his songs. And heck, do I love myself my leitmotifs. You’ve got some obvious ones, like the final battle theme in which all the character themes and other leitmotifs are integrated. Then you got some maybe more subtle once, just like how the overworld themes are just the main theme, just a lot calmer and using the lead instruments of the towns of the areas.

But my absolute favourites gotta be the character themes and the main theme. I love how fitting the themes for the characters are and in general, each of them is such a bop. At first I prefered Elvis’, because I sure am a sucker for jazzy vibes, but over time Adelle’s became my fav. It’s just something about the trumpets, and how the theme almost sounds a bit melancholic and bittersweet, that drew me in. And considering her story, mostly her bad end, that the bittersweet tone really fits.

Then there’s the main theme. Just like BD’s it shouts “triumphant anthem” and it definitely gives you a very familiar vibe, but I’d argue it has even better emotional progression. Heck, the first time I heard the music start up in the reveal trailer, I didn’t have to look at the screen to know this is gonna be a BD game. Also, the credit song version had me weeping at the true end. I’m someone who’s very easily affected by music (if me shouting about soundtracks on this blog wasn’t proof enough) and just hearing that ending song, getting the after credits scene, just for the second credits to start as a freaking duet. Dude, at that point I just started sobbing, I’m not gonna lie. Just this little part showed how much Revo knows how to put emotion in a song and also write it in such a way that he can elicit strong, emotional reactions from you too. 

Story

People have been complaining how the story is too boring and kinda disappointing in comparison to the last one, but I just think the games tried to accomplish different things here. Since the BD series is a celebration of old, classic jrpgs, “cliche” storytelling is a given. Though, BD did throw a lot of meta stuff in there too. BD2 in contrast just feels like a direct execution of that initial idea. It feels familiar, it feels comfy and it feels safe. Except for the little things with the endings and then overwriting the Nexus’ “save file”, BD2 doesn’t really get that meta, which is totally fine. It doesn’t try to reinvent or innovate anything, it just wants to be a fantasy story, that might be cliche, but still fun and enjoyable in its own right.

I’d also argue that the pacing is a lot better than the old game, because with BD I sometimes found myself skipping through scenes to get on with the story. Not that this game didn’t have me rushing through stuff as well, but I found it kept my intrigue way better than the original.

Characters

Next to the music, this is the part that I absolutely love the most. While, yes, they did lose a lot of potential with some characters, mostly with the villains, the main cast is just so much fun. I love these 4 dorks so, so much.

I honestly can’t stand how much people compare them to the original cast. Yes, ofc, I’ve been doing my fair share of comparisons too, but calling these four a more boring version of BD’s party physically hurts me. Because except for some initial impressions, the Heroes of Light are completely different from our beloved Warriors of Light.

While yes, Seth and Gloria give off strong Tiz and Agnes vibes at first, they both grow into such different characters that they’re not really comparable. I think this shows with Adelle and Elvis even more. I do understand how people could compare Adelle and Edea, since they’re both the feisty girl type, but I can’t understand how people can see Ringabel and Elvis as the same character type. While those two are the “suave” party members, they act so differently from another. And that’s honestly apparent the first time you meet them. 

Anyways, I love these 4 so much.

We technically don’t know a lot about Seth at all, but they manage to pull so much out of just the fact that he’s a sailor, that it makes him really endearing, really fast.

I was kinda disinterested with Gloria at first, because again, the initial impression was Agnés2.0, but she grew on me a lot. Gloria is way more hard headed and honestly sassy in comparison to Agnés and I absolutely adore it.

Elvis. Elvis, my man. I love this fantasy scottosh wizard so, so much. He’s such a ridiculous character but so endearing at the same time. You got all this dorkiness, with him setting himself on fire as a student, him doing god knows what for a good drink or just laughing danger and prejudice in the face. But then you got his super empathetic and caring side. Mind you, most of his wise moments come from quoting Lady Emma, but still, as much as he’s hopeless with certain social situations, he’s actually still really good at reading the room and playing things smart. He’s a smart and powerful idiot, which makes him a danger to everyone and himself, and I love him for it. (I also can’t believe they called him Lesley I MEAN COME ON)

And then there’s Adelle. I liked her from the start, but I didn’t think she would stick out to me. I think now she’s my favourite character. Not even talking about all the stuff that happens in chapter 3 and onward, because these story threads are awesome in their own right, but there’s just something about her personality that’s interesting and appealing to me. Like I said, I’m not surprised people compare her to Edea, I did too at first, but while Edea walks very close to the line of a Tsundere, I was really surprised that Adelle is, well, not a Tsundere at all. Yeah, of course she’s putting Elvis down a lot, but that stems more from her preventing his ego from going to his head than her being all embarrassed. No, Adelle is actually really well adjusted when it comes to communication. While it’s hilarious that she and Elvis met with her chucking her shoes at him, the two just got along well right from the start. Adelle in general has this really open and helpful personality, but also doesn’t shy away from putting her foot down, even if that sometimes comes out as an embarrassed sputter. She’s also the mother hen of the group. She looks out for the other three and gets concerned about them real fast. 

I dunno, Adelle just really grew on me over the course of this game, and then her kinda being paired with Elvis too, as partners and as partners, makes me like her even more. Because as much as I like their personalities individually, I like their character dynamic even more. I honestly love the relationships between all four of them a lot. You really feel them grow closer as friends and all the little character sidequests just always made me really happy.

Conclusion

You might not believe me, but I really held back there. This could probably have been 3 times its length. As much as I love this game, it’s of course not perfect. It struggles and flails in some parts a lot and it certainly has some aspects that might turn people off. But for me, it was just a very familiar and comfy game that didn’t necessarily deliver anything new, but that told its story in such a way that it still got me excited to keep going. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing and the conclusion of the story actually got me to cry. While not groundbreaking, this game is highly enjoyable and leaves you absolutely satisfied at the end.

I'm going to use this part of what you said in a previous answer that made me really curious "the way of the authors to tell the story is another matter" to know your top 5 (or ~10) of that :)

Ah :D I guess the easier way to put it would be “This time I chose my favourite styles basing on art style mostly, but if I were to choose my fav storytelling/mix of art and how authors tells it/what they want to transmit, the odrer/the list would be different” :”) So some authors/stories on the list of my fav storytelling (not sure if it's the right term for what i mean but let's use this) are the same I put in the previous list. The titles and authors won’t be surprise for you, but I’ll list them anyway. Warning: I love talking about such things a lot, so I suddenly wrote a lot.

(Ask me my top 5-10 anything)

1. Literally anything by Takaya Natsuki. You have no idea how #tired I am of all the discussions about both adaptations of her Furuba (which is better which is worse no listen to me bc I Have an Opinion of High Authority) when not a single adaptation quite got her style in storytelling, foreshadowing and especially presenting her characters’ personal drama. I think I espcially love her for not throwing it all in your face right away, being careful at hinting at things (so that you don’t quite get some parts of the characters’ thoughts and inner struggles until you learn the facts and it hits you) and for leaving you some space to use your own brain what you think about this or that storyline. (Tamura Yumi does it too which makes her my second fave author). Also, years after reading and rereading her works I see better how storylines are entwinted and unfolding, and it still makes me yell “HOW does she do it” every time I go back to Furuba and her other works and see something new. I love her Hoshi wa Utau (which hits hard and is painfully real in the matter of parents/children’s conflicts), and Liselotte to majo no mori (darkish fairytale with hopeful messages) and wish more people knew about them too, not only Furuba.

2. Kouno Fumiyo’s Yunagi no Machi Sakura no Kuni. I first read this manga a long time ago and was dying of happiness when it got published in my country bc oh my gosh. It’s a historical thing, it’s a heavy thing, she does have such unique style (my first thought was ”ah looks cute, like children books illustrations” and then it killed me) and approach to place panels on pages or transitions between scenes or past and present (I think some comic researcher or smth even called it innovative). The page that struck me the most was a spread near the end of this story, presenting a character in his older years sitting on the beach of a river in Hiroshima and him in the same place right after the war. Perhaps it doesn’t sound so original but this work and these two pages live rent free in my soul to this day.

3. Ando Yuki’s oneshots (and Machida-kun). She is my favourite short stories author, she just knows how to tell it so that I got tuned in from the start. Be it a school slice of life or basically Edith Piaf’s song Hymne à l'amour presented in the form of manga oneshot, they give me immense joy. And oh, there’s almost always a twist near the ending I can’t predict. Her characters act a bit weird and take weird decisions sometimes but I think it’s what makes them feel so real to me.

And it’s cheating, but while I’m talking about oneshots, I want to mention Midorikawa Yuki and her shorter-than-Natsume stories. Because they give me a similar feeling to Ando’s oneshots - the atmosphere is different, but the way they touch my heart is the same. Don’t get me wrong, I love Natsume and its structure (main characters and their personal jouney through unrelated stories of other people/not humans), but I love Midorikawa’s shorter stories much more.

4. Takamatsu Misaki’s Skip to Loafer. One of the best slice stories I’ve ever read. Right amount of drama and comedy, a cast of characters with different problems and motivations. I can’t help but think “Oh I wish I were able to create a story like this one day”. Also, someone wrote about it: “let me live the wholesome high school life i didnt have” and ugh I felt it :”))

5. Yazawa Ai’s stories: Nana and Gokinjo Monogatari. Did “Nee, Nana” moments kill my soul every time it was used in the story? Yes, absolutely. Did it make me cry? Don’t even ask.

6. Nishi Keiko’s stories: Otoko no Isshou, Koi to Gunkan. A person I know described her stories like this: “If life goes the wrong way, it’s better to go home”, and I think it sums it up. Both of the stories I listed are about ordinary life in small towns, they both me melancholic and somehow cozy feeling. Both stories have themes and characters that don’t really interest me much, but when I read them, I usually cry. It’s another A+ slice of life author imo.

7. Tsukuba Sakura’s Mekakushi no Kuni. It’s dear to me for special reasons. There a girl who sometimes sees future when touches other people, there is a boy who sees the past all the time he does the same, there’s another boy... And NO evil organizations chasing them for their superpowers, NO global plots or problems or author’s will to condemn society, no deep philosophy questions about time and so on. Just normal slice of life of not so normal peoplewho try to cope with this particularity they have and fit the world they live in. (I wish authors realized the potential of such slice of life centered urban fantasy but they keep failing me aiming at the Global, sigh)

8. Torino Nanko’s Toripan. It’s basically authors essays on her daily life and mostly birdwatching, but ugh it’s so good. Peak comedy about birds and heartfelt pages for when she speaks about her memories or remarks on nature, it’s so full of love towards this world and life. After I read Toripan I feel like I become kinder and better :DD

9. Watanuki Yoshiko’s Manatsu no Delta. I read it some time ago and my first thought was “Wow, this IS how you touch an unpleasant yet existing problem”. I’ll certainly be waiting for this author’s other works.

10. Ikuemi Ryo’s stories, especially the ones featuring metaphorical ghosts (Kiyoku Yawaku, Torch Song Ecology) and Taiyou ga Mite Iru. Joseis with ghosts are my fave thing on earth, and Ikuemi’s great at it. But she can make any theme totally worth digging into, be it school life or cheating and complicated family relationships. I think TGM is her work that left the deepest trace in my soul because I was reading it when it was ongoing, for three years, and it’s basically just something that makes you die slowly looking at how not so bad people fk up their life decisions bc of their unresolved traumas and issues but you can’t take your eyes of it and then need several years of therapy after reading such manga. And she doesn’t even preech or say you should not live like this. She’s like “this is a life story I want to tell, take whatever you want from it” and I’m like “gooosh this is so painful and looks so real and makes me feel things, I love it”. Ikuemi Power as it is. (Life teaches me nothing, I lowkey want to read something like TGM again and Akaneda Yuki’s Saraba Yoki Hi fulfills this wish of mine, but uh I’m so glad it’s rarely updated)

As 2020 comes to an end (thank whatever higher power there is), I wanted to share a list of my favorite songs! (the following are songs RELEASED this year) (I’ve included a list of songs that I heard this year, but weren’t released in 2020, after it). These are mostly korean/chinese.

Alright, this is in NO particular order, just my favorites. I’ve mostly included one song from a group/solo act and added their other great releases in description. It is mostly music that I listened to, so if your favs are not here, feel free to rec me good music! ENJOY!

BTS had a great year musically. 2 korean albums, 1 japanese and lots of solo stuff. My most played songs are Dynamite (listen, she did what she had to do), Stay Gold (if gold had a sound, this would be it), Black Swan, Blue and Grey (i live for melancholy), Life Goes On (spring day’s successor), Filter(park jimin is a threat), Friends (my feels!), Louder than bombs (TROYE SIVAN), UGH (murder music), 00:00, Moon (jin solos are beautiful always) and Your Eyes Tell (honestly, show me one bad japanese single, i dare you).

I got into TXT a lot more this year, as opposed to being a casual listener that I was last year. Many people say they have a no-skip discography and I believe it’s true. My most played songs were Blue Hour (i ADORE this song), We Lost the summer, Wishlist, Can’t you see me (the song that made me a stan), Fairy of Shampoo (ethereal), PUMA (choi yeonjun is a threat), Eternally (an ATTACKK!) and their f2020 cover.

Ateez is another group i really got into this year, mesmerized by their performance abilities. My most played : Star 1117 (i’m very soft for this song), To the Beat (a true bop), Inception (holy jongho vocals), One day at a time and Good Lil Boy (does hongjoong ever have a bad rap verse?). Their Black Cat Nero cover also blew me away!! (i’m lowkey obsessed).

God’s menu by Stray Kids

I’ve been keeping an eye on Stray Kids ever since hellevator came out and this is my favourite song by them, so far (yes, i had a heart attack when i first saw Hyunjin). Most Played : Back Door (the beat drop gives me life, the choreo is probably my fav), All in, Easy (do they ever have a bad chorus?), GO LIVE (the beat??!! killer), Another Day (i am a slow jam hoe) and My Universe.

Pacman by eaJ   

I didn’t think it was possible to love him more after day6 but Jae’s solo music has proved me wrong. Yes, i love Pillows (with Keshi) to bits but pacman is my first love. Most Played : It just is (Seori and their golden vocals), LA TRAINS (vocals!!!), Pinocchio (the mv is adorable, the beat is so fun), 50 proof (the vibes man, it's the VIBES) and TRUMAN.

Left & Right by Seventeen

Another group with amazing releases this year, I’m slowly getting into Seventeen more these days. Most Played : Fallin’ Flower (so beautiful, the vocals), 24H (the beat change?!!???), 17 (Joshua, DK and Pink Sweats) and HOME;RUN (this is a brand of fun that is entirely their own).

Not by the moon by GOT7

I am no stranger to GOT7, i’ve liked their music for years now but this is one of their more lyrical releases this year and i adore when GOT7 does this type of music. Most Played : Poison (jackson opens it and the vibes are immaculate), Last Piece (the way the vocals flow into the rap) and Thank You, Sorry.

This is literally the first song i’ve heard from this artist, please rec me more. I also adore No Blueberries with DPR LIVE and CL.

Eight by IU, Prod. SUGA

IU is an indisputable vocal queen, and her music always comforts me greatly so when i heard she was having a song produced by Yoongi, i promptly lost my shit. It was everything I expected and more and embodies sorrow and pain with great grace. Give you My Heart from the ‘Crash Landing on you OST’ was also a loved song this year.

Cry for me by TWICE

How do i talk about the queens? TWICE is the group i go to when I want fun music with good vibes but this song has such bad b*tch vibes that i am in love. Most played : More & More (a bop), Don’t call me again, I can’t stop me (i love the way it flows), Handle It (the vocals??? How pretty this song is???) and Say Something (seriously, eyes wide open is an amazing album).

Criminal by Teamin

Where do i start with Lee Taemin? I love almost all his solo stuff. He grabbed me by the neck ever since ‘Move’ and hasn't let go. Criminal is SO taemin that i don't think anyone else could have delivered the concept with such grace and grit. Most Played : 2 Kids (the chorus is so good), Clockwork, Idea (i love the vibe) and Pansy (i'm a ballad hoe).

Maria by Hwasa

Listen, i loved Twit when it came out but i love Maria as her sound so much more. Most Played : I’m bad too (feat. DPR LIVE) (i love the beat, the vibe and the flavor), LMM and Orbit from ‘The King: Eternal Monarch OST’ (as soon as her voice comes in, i loved the song).

Breath by DEAN, Rad Museum, Mokyo

Dear my friend by Agust D ft. Kim Jong Wan (NELL)

D-2 was everything expected from the second mixtape off Agust D and yet it brought a fresh wave of singing and melodies, once again proving the man’s production genius. This song is so reminiscent in it’s lyrics and still so real, its my favorite off the record.Other songs I loved : People, Deachwita and What do you think? (i DID love the complete mixtape though).

Given - Taken by Enhypen

Yes, I watched  I-LAND. Given-Taken was a better debut then I expected at first. 10 months (the chorus and beat) and Flicker off their debut album were also played a lot. 

I just want to stay with you by Zion.T

The King: Eternal Monarch was a much awaited drama for a lot of people and it’s OST is one of the best ones this year. Zion.T’s amazing vocals really did an amazing job of expressing the love in the story. Other songs I really liked from this album were Gravity by Kim Jong Wan and the Hydrangea Instrumental by Lee Geon Yeong.

The purge by Jay Park, pH-1, Woodie Gochild, Sik-K, and others.

H1GHER: RED TAPE is my hype album of the year. All artists involved did an amazing job. Seriously, get yourself some bomb ass beats, as a treat. Other loved tracks : Telefono Remix (Woodie Gochild is great at his flavour of delivery), Closed Case and The Arrival.

Soul by Lay (zhang yixing)

Yixing’s album LIT was his best project till date, no arguments. He’s really evolved into such a refined musician, especially with how well he merges traditional chinese instruments into Hip Hop/RnB beats and I adore the vibe of this album. Although the album is great entirely, Soul is my favourite for how softly and prettily it flows. Other loved tracks: Eagle (the BEAT), Fly, Boom (bops on bops on BOPS) and Call My Name.

100 ways by Jackson Wang

It is astounding how well Jackson has formed his own style of music ever since starting off with Papillon. He’s also sort of come into himself as an artist and it has birthed some great music. Other loved tracks : Pretty Please (i love the vibe of the song!) and Should’ve Let Go (ft. JJ Lin).

SUGA’s interlude by Halsey 

Idk how else to explain it but Halsey and Yoongi have great music synergy. There’s something about their song/lyric writing that matches very well and needless to say, I adore the song. Blueberry eyes by MAX is also another great Yoongi collab.

In Your Time by Lee Suhyun

It’s Okay to not be Okay had an OST that was dreamy, gritty and very fairytale-esque, much like the drama itself. Among a bunch of great songs, this one is my favourite. Other loved songs: You’re Cold by Heize (always delivers!), Breath by Sam Kim (OST angel), Hallelujah by Kim Feel (chills!), In Silence by Janet Suhh (literally how angelic is her tone??), I’m your Psycho by Janet Suhh (it’s creepy in a dreamy way) and Brother | Her World | Through the dark Tunnel of time | Butterfly - all amazing instrumentals by Nam Hye Seung and Park Sang Hee (seriously, go listen to the album).

Another great discovery towards the end of the Year, Junny has vocals for DAYS and admirable delivery. Other loved songs: AURA ft. pH-1, edge (this is so hypnotising in it’s beauty) and I will. Please feel welcome to educate me more about this artist!!

Make a Wish by NCT

NCT always provides bops and NCT U is my favourite sub-unit, for their unique style of music, so when they came out with this song I was ready and they delivered! Most Played : 90’s Love  (the old boy band theme was so well done), From Home (i’m a sucker for slow songs), Nectar (yes, i adore WayV’s music), MAD DOG by NCT 127 and Kick It by NCT 127 (this is the flavour of NCT i LOVE).

Zombie by Day6

Day6 has always been in my daily otations and as always, they put out good music after good music. I loved both the original Korean and the English versions of this song (they do rock well, what else is there to say?). Other loved songs : Tick Tock (oh the vocals, the way the beat moves!), Love me or Leave me, Day and Night... actually the whole Album is great, go listen to ‘The Book of us: The Demon’.

Fearless by Ma Di [other chinese songs]

Chinese songs have been a surprisingly pleasant addition to my daily rotation. Fearless from the “Go Ahead” OST takes the top stop because of how well it embodies the struggles of stepping into adulthood, the melody and MaDi’s amazing vocals. Other Chinese songs I loved: Praise for Red Plum Blossoms by Xiao Zhan (the perfect welcoming of spring paired with  such expressive vocals), Remaining Years by Xiao Zhan (Joy of Life OST) and his OST for the Oath of Love.

hey @taylorswift , a note on willow & what it means to me!

for 1.5 years i was in a relationship with someone who i thought i was going to marry, have kids with & have a fairytale ending (who happens to look ~exactly~ like the actor in the willow mv lol)

but thats the thing about relationships, when we get into them when we are not whole and complete within and we have many insecurities and low self worth

we get into these relationships looking for somebody outside of ourselves to fill this void... we chase after them... we beg them to take our hand... all because we don't source our own love from within. we look outside of ourselves to find a man to fill that void that is in our hearts. and boy, sometimes does it work. for a long time.

but there is always that feeling in the back of your heart, yeah?

the knowingness that something isn't quite right; something missing.

this was me when i left my partner to find myself

this is what willow is about for me... its a mirrored reflection of the old way i viewed relationships. i would follow them wherever they went, giving so much of myself away to please the person who was giving me love. even in my past relationship, i couldn't tell you how many times we talked about getting married to each other. now that i look back and reflect (my fav thing to do during yule + solstice), i know i never really wanted him to marry me. i wanted a commitment that someone would always love me and be there for me and fill the void for me.. instead of me diving into my own shadow, and loving myself back to life.

its funny, because folklore ended up being like an invisable string for me this year... i didn't listen to any songs until september. i spent the year travelling california and a lot of time in mt shasta (you would love it!! lots of beautiful forests and serene lakes, total witch vibes). each song would be somehow shown to me in my reality in the moment i needed to hear it / it described my life. and for me, willow feels like the conclusion to this story. i was travelling with him during this year, and when i left him is when invisable string came to my life

and now, the first time i watched the video and at the end when you + the man meet again through the string, right away i was like 'omg maybe this is a sign that he + i will find eachother again'

after the past few days, i'm starting to really come into closure (which was introduced to me today, i only listen to the songs as they seemingly pop into my reality [i've only heard willow and closure], and its funny because i was wondering if he got my letter...) that i don't really want that ending anymore. that that ending would be me giving myself away to another person instead of being completely whole + complete within myself. that the invisable string will always be between myself and myself. a love that is boundless and ever-lasting. not a love that can vanish or transmute into something else. but a love that will always remain. and the only love that can be is with myself.

Sa really feel like this is a huge ending of a huge chapter in my life. not only a chapter but a book. i feel like i finally get to turn the page. not only just that but the witch vibes put a really nice star on the top of the yule tree. nice touch.

i think this will also be my last message for a few months, maybe years, who really knows, i allow it all to flow.

but i did want to say one thing, before i close this:

thank you. thank you for the impact you've had on my life and even for being there. getting to meet you june 2 2018 in chicago was something i deeply needed at that time and i am so grateful we had that opportunity. it was truly a blessing after years of supporting you. not only that but i didnt have anybody to really, truly see me or love me at that time. so thank you for being that person. now, i get to be that person for myself.

(spoiler alert--its werewolves. He’s a werewolf. Do you know how hard it is to tell your crush about your furry problem when they're afraid of dogs? Also, add in a mysterious organization that has a problem kidnapping adolescent werewolves and we’ve got ourselves half a plot ladies and gentlemen.)

#2 is about another introvert girl (surprise, surprise) in a zombie apocalypse. It’s been months since she’s seen another human being who doesn’t want to eat her. Her story starts when she happens upon an old radio and while fiddling with it one night, she accidentally tunes into a boys channel where four boys talk to each other. there’s a lot of introverting, reading, dogs, cold weather, dead people trying to eat her, looting, and listening to boys conversations over a walkie talkie that may or may not classify as creepy.

and #3 is just classic noble girl is sent as a spy into the enemy kingdom but everything goes to shit before she even walks in the door. Mission was simple. Be a kitchen girl, poison the King's food and kill him and then escape back home during the confusion. Instead, she gets the honor of becoming the Prince’s comfort woman/concubine after the last girl did an honor killing on herself. So, new mission. Get close enough to the Prince that he tells her information and then send that information back to her country so that they can win the war. (Passing secret information along is a little easier when it's not written down on paper but instead in flower crowns and bouquets as the secret language of flowers.)

Taylor Swift - Fearless Album Song Ranking

For this album ranking, I decided to split the album up into tiers based on which songs I would put near one another to help decide where they line up. I wrote about the songs in reverse order (from what you will read it) and I help explain why I rank each song the way I do. (I don’t make as much sense on the higher ranked songs)

Tier 1: 

I hate when people have singles as their fav song, and it hasn’t always been this way, but these songs have tested time, I love when she performs them, the music videos bring back so many memories, and even just my own discovery of the song they are amazing.

Love Story

Ok, maybe I'm biased atm bc I haven’t stopped listening to Love Story recently because of the video of Shawn at her show. But… it’s so good. The more I like a song the more difficult it becomes to explain why. I’ve always loved the story of Romeo and Juliet. The instrumentation is beautiful. The music video. Ugh I can’t, everything about this song is great. Never stop believing in love, it might not be like the storybooks but that doesn’t mean portions can’t be, or maybe, maybe, it can be even better than you imagined?

Fearless

Ugh. This song is everything. This song is what I want in a first love, there are so many small things that I love about this song, the rain on the pavement, have I ever mentioned how much I LOVE petrichor? This song makes me think of a running on a spiral staircase in a long dress. Capture it. Remember it. Fearless.  Fearless and Speak Now were really important albums to me, in part because they motivated me to live that way.

You Belong With Me

The thing that’s funny about this album is I think it has some of the most memorable music videos, and yet at the same time, I am able to remember my own visuals (or at least some) of the album before the video came out. That’s the one downside of music videos is sometimes I think our minds can be flooded by an artists visuals and forget our own. This is such a fun song, the music video is amazing. Now I’m thinking of Taylor walking back to the stage from the B-stage during Speak Now Tour.

White Horse

I received this album as a Christmas present, per typical, after everyone opened their presents my family goes its separate ways and mulls over their gifts. I put this album and listened to this song on the stereo. I remember acting out each of these songs, but I can vividly remember portions of this song, being on the stairs (I still sort of do this when I’m listening to music - like I’ll make up a music video in my mind, or a dance routine, pretend I’m on stage)

Tier 2:

Breathe

This song is difficult to listen to, at one point I made the connection to the lyrics it feels like I just lost a friend, and I’ve never been the same. I’ve been through many ups and downs with these friends, these friends I also went through loving Taylor together, that slowly faded and I guess so did our friendship. Sometimes it feels like it's in flames even though one of them I haven’t talked to in a year. The tricky thing is that we're still family friends so it’s likely I’ll see them again and that’s rough. (I can’t continue, but I have come to the realization that it wasn’t just their fault, and I probably hurt them along the way, and I think that was important).(ugh now I’m finishing the song because sometimes I just wish there were answers, but like the song says wishing there was a clean break)

You’re Not Sorry

This song is a song to have a break down to. I know I have before. wow. Lol lyrically I didn’t think tier two had any similarities but wow they do and I don’t want to go any more in depth than I did in my description for breathe.

Tier 3:

Fifteen

Ahhh fifteen. I love the storytelling in this song. This song has been through a lot. This song was one of the first songs I heard before it was on the internet, oh the days when she had unreleased songs that she would play. This song came out at a time where I got to live listening to this on my first day of high school, the day I turned fifteen, and to hear it in concert when I was fifteen. "Dancing around the room when the night ends” what a beautiful lyric. lol still waiting for that first kiss tho 7 years later.

Change

At one point I this was my favorite song off of the album. Oh, and did I love singing the hallelujahs at the end. I was so proud of Taylor for this being an Olympic song.

Forever & Always

I mean… if you aren’t thinking of Joe when you are listening to this song you are doing it wrong. It was iconic, at the same time I wonder if she regrets outing him. But I’m glad that out of all her exes it was him, he took it like a sport, I mean yes he has a song too, but I think they would both be over that at this point. Also, this song was clearly written out of rage and in her later albums we see how much she cared about him. I never thought about this before but I wonder if Joe was her first love, I know she was with people in high school, but (Lol when you contradict this with her feeling invisible in her first album I always find it funny, because in my last review I mentioned that I never really felt alone or like an outsider but I’ve never even been asked out). I love the visuals that come to mind when I think of this song. Additionally, I think of the red chairs and better than revenge.

Hey Stephen

Hey Stephen used to be one of my top songs off of this album. It makes me think of her jumping on the bed like in the booklet… It’s a really sweet song. But sonically, it doesn’t stand out like it use to. If I had a crush I would probably be eating up this song.

Tier 4:

 I feel like with every album there are similar sounding songs found in the meat of the album that tends to get forgotten over time…for fearless it’s these next two songs. I like both of these songs but sometimes I forget about them. One thing that I love about these songs is they are the ones that you could scream, yell and cry to. It brings an additional dimension besides a fairytale that may or may not come true and the ramifications of that.

The Way I Loved You

This song is ranked higher because socially it gives more of a punch. I like the dimension of who he appears to be versus what is actually happening behind the scenes when it’s just the two of them. But also her liking the turbulence of the relationship because there was intensity maybe there was fighting but there was also a passion. Now it clean cut and they’re going through the ropes but it’s not what she loves about him.

Tell Me Why

I received Fearless as a Christmas gift the year it came out and I always remember having this song stuck in my head during the car ride home from my grandmas, but because it was a cd (and if I had an iPod at that time I probs couldn’t transfer the songs till I got home) I couldn’t listen to it. I was stating some of the lyrics to my mom and I remember her being surprised by the intensity of the song. I also really like the visuals in the album booklet for this song. That was one thing I always loved about her albums.

The Best Day

This has always been my least favorite song on the album, you’ll find a theme of my lower ranked songs because I feel like they have this same style to them. This song is important though, it is very sweet, very personal. It gives us as fans an insight into Taylor’s life, but more importantly, it’s Taylor giving her heart and her thanks to her Mom.

I like my coffee black with a little honey for when I need it to wake me up, otherwise I like raspberry mocha lattes, and lapsang souchong tea (it smells like a campfire, so its kinda therapeutic for me).

Sometimes I’ll put forth the effort to sit down and draw for an hour or two.

Its really vague, for the most part it exists outdoors, and there’s soft light and a nice breeze, and trees and green grass, and I get to smoke a cigarette without feeling terrible about it. (I gave it up a long time ago, but I still get urges to smoke when the weather’s nice for some reason, its mostly associated with happy memories)

I think that if I ever get to a point where I don’t have to worry about money, and I find someone who I love so much and had no doubts about spending the rest of my life with them, I would totally have a wedding. It seems 2 (two) human beings might be interested in a recommendation fic list. SO HERE IT IS   Things to have in mind:   .It was supposed to be short but I ended up mentioning 97 fics, sorry   .I used 10 categories (highschool, college, modern setting, Kingdom / Fantasy Au / Magic, Miscellaneous Aus, Post-series, canon, reunion, Life Swap and Gender Bend) . 2017 MDK&KK Gigs

As a disclaimer of sorts, there are bits missing or cut out, and quotes are approximate because 

my memory’s not what it used to be post transplant

I don’t feel comfortable posting some things “publicly” 

I’m not sure how much we can say about new songs, so the ones that haven’t been released or played somewhere else publicly are just titled “New Song” until Sept 25th

Also, I’m not tagging this - mainly posting as tradition and for posterity. 

Back in 2015, MDK&KK came to Seattle for a series of house gigs, and they invited Jackie (@catgranting) and me to one. You can read about the magic here. 

Since then, we’ve become friends with the amazing woman who hosts, and she and KK have kept us posted about their return to the PNW. Initially, we assumed we would just go to one of the house gigs. However, MDK&KK have both been incredibly supportive and understanding of my medical situation, and they offered to do a small Sunday afternoon gig for us and friends. We didn’t know it when we arrived, but they actually played it as a benefit gig for my treatment plan which is C R A Z Y generous, and I don’t think I’ll ever be over it.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON

We arrived and set out food and drinks for the guests. KK came out once we had pretty much set everything up, gave me a huge hug, and we chatted. He mentioned that this gig would be entirely acoustic since it went so well last time, and that Maria was more nervous than usual.

Everyone mingled for awhile. It was fun to have friends and coworkers to share this with. Our dear friend, Aisling (@disturbedporcelain) came down from Vancouver and brought her sweet cousins. We hadn’t seen her in forever, so it was lovely to catch up and special to have her there. Eventually, MDK came downstairs looking fecking beautiful in a Frida Cahlo dress. Our host’s daughter did her hair:

We made eye contact across the patio and both went in for a hug. She asked after my health, and then leaned in and asked if I had seen the episode of OB yet. I blurted out that I had cried, and that she was incredible. She talked about how she felt super overwhelmed by the response on Twitter. Jackie and Aisling came over, and we gabbed about music, nerves, life, etc.  

Around 5pm, everyone headed in to find seats. We ended up in the front row. #classic

Sing Hola Luna

After the song, Maria looked up and smiled, “Hiiii! Two songs down. We’re alright now.” It was roasting last year, but this year was quite toasty as well, and someone passed up a fan for her. “What’s that? Oh god! It goes with my outfit. I’m just going to stand and pose.” She explained the PA situation and the terror. “I guess you’re going to hear the songs the way we write them. So it’s special.” 

Sing from the Sea A Couple More Years (Cover) (Bob Dylan plays it in Hearts of Fire)

We’ve never heard them sing this before. It’s a very sweet duet, and I feel like the way they sang it was a distillation of them performing together. KK started the song first plying the guitar, then singing. MDK looked toward him, smiled, and joined in on the second line harmonizing. Throughout the song they seamlessly traded off. They are so in sync, and listen to each other intently, yet effortlessly. It’s memorizing to watch, particularly at this gig because so much of it was unplanned. 

Pride (new)

MDK: “What about ‘Pride?’”  Audience: “What about it?” MDK: “Get on to it.” 

Maria told a story about looking for books about drag for an upcoming project. They stopped in a shop called Deseret Book, and the guy at the front asked if he could help her find anything. She asked if they had any books about queer theory or drag. He quickly said no which she thought was odd, so she asked if they had any books about drag and fashion, and he was like, “No, we definitely don’t." (Meanwhile, Diane, Aisling’s cousin, is dying of laughter). He told her that they’re actually a small Mormon book store. She quickly explained that she wasn’t trying to be provocative and wasn’t from here, and he laughed, and gave them an address for another bookstore.

Last Call (new) 

MDK: “This is a song about getting stuck in a bar… It could happen.”

Bethlehem (Sing-along) 

I was shite at this to start with. Maria was like, “All you really need to know how to do it count.”  Sounds easy enough, right? Well, we also had to repeat a line and then count, which okay, still sounds easy, lol. I eventually got it. Maria also said that every time they do it it’s completely different. “What yous did that was different, was you held out the note, like 'ooooooonee,’ ‘twooooooo.’ It was very cool."

Stuck

At this point KK asked for The List™ to be passed around. Before the gig, they wrote a normal setlist, but KK also wrote a list of a bunch of random songs they don’t usually play at gigs any more. “And if we don’t know it, it’s not like they’re going to kick us out.” As The List landed in my hands, KK said, “Oh, I already know what you’re going to pick.” “Yes, you do. Stuck.” Cue laughter. I already talked about this in the 2015 post, but to reiterate, it’s my “if forced to choose” fav, and partially responsible for how we got to know them. It’s still wild to think about the fact that it might be her most well-known song due to OB. It was a staple on my hospital playlist. God, I don’t even know how to talk about this song anymore. I’m just very thankful for it, and to have been surrounded by its vibration. 

Mother

Aisling’s pick. (God, Mütter is SO good). MDK: “You didn’t put that on the list did you?” As Maria hit the chorus, she choked up. “I actually can’t sing that.” She talked about how the relationship between you and your mother, whether good or bad, is always remarkable. And she loves her mam, tried to write a song, and it turned into "the heaviest fucking song."

KK: “I wrote this song when I was four. Lyrically, it sounds like I was four.”  MDK: “I think if I would’ve said that to the guy in the Deseret Book Shop, sinners like you and me, I think he would’ve got it. We’d’ve bonded.”

Little Bee (new) 

While KK tuned his guitar, MDK talked about us: “Jackie and Shawna have been friends of ours awhile now. We got to know them when they came to see us in Toronto, and they brought my favorite things: crisps and socks. We’ve spent lots of different mad nights with them. They had a car crash - Aisling, you were there too. And the album’s not going to be out until September, but they got a special sneak preview just for being old fans.” Jackie: “’Old.’” MDK: “And by old, I clearly just mean, you know, a long time.” Jackie: “It’s fun to hear them acoustic. ...Because they’re very not.” MDK: “They are very not.” 

KK: “Is there more?” MDK: "There’s loads more. We only played half the song.” KK: *looks at me* ”Most songs go on too long anyway, don’t they?” Me: “No.” KK: “It’s just me then.” MDK: “It’s just you."

MDK: “This one’s a little bit sad, but not really. (...) All we have are the days. You just have to say, all I have is today. Can I just be the best I can be today?”  We first heard this at Hugh’s Room 2015, and have been obsessed with it ever since. Aisling cried. Jackie reached out and held her hand. Definitely a song I wasn’t expecting to hear live. The vibe was more ‘La Sirena’ than ‘Charm.’ Maria talked about how she wrote a series of songs inspired by fairytales because she wanted princesses having their own agency. 

KK made a joke about a place that sold “grass” and alcohol called “High Spirits.”

After the first verse, Maria hesitated.  KK: "The chorus.”  MDK: “What is the chorus? What are the words? … Damn ... *looks to me and Jackie* Do yous know?” Me and Jackie: “Uh… Keep the wolves and your daughters at your door.” MDK: “Thank god for fans.”

KK: "We don’t know it, but it’s funny. We haven’t done this since like 1943.”  I didn’t even know this song was in their repertoire! It reminded me of ‘Babes’ since it’s more of story song, but with a mischievous tango edge. Maria was hilarious, playing coy and all.

We hung out for quite awhile afterwards, as we had promised to help clean up (shout out to my mam for doing most of it because I was too overwhelmed to do much of anything). The post-gig glow, though! Aisling and I spent some time sitting in the yard just basking in it. 

Jackie, Kieran and I debated about which of their songs is the saddest. KK said ‘Unbelievable,’ which, to me, ultimately has a comforting message like a lot of their ‘sad’ songs (’Stuck,’ ‘Last Day,’ ‘Sing from the Sea’). I think we settled on ‘Helena.’ 

Near the end of the night, we ended up in a conversation with Aisling, MDK, and KK. We talked about a bunch of stuff: queer theory, drag, gentrification, OB, traveling, their music (obvs). At some point, Jackie and I sang the bridge of ‘My Addiction’ to them. Maria said she loves that song and hummed it. We’ve put in the request for next time. (How fecking epic would it be live?!)

 As we said goodbye, MDK pulled us in for hugs and called us mighty women. "Well, that means a lot coming from another mighty woman.”

SATURDAY EVENING

I hadn’t realized it was an option, but there was extra availability at their last gig, so we ended up going to this one as well. I am incredibly grateful to have had a second opportunity to see them under less stressful circumstances all ‘round (though it’s still kind of terrifying to be in the presence of people you deeply respect and admire). There's not as much about this night because I forgot to do a brain dump after. Plus this is WAY too long already. 

We had a terrible heat wave in Seattle which is totally unprepared as a city to deal with it, so the gig was moved from a home to an air-conditioned conference room in a bank. When we arrived, we got hugs from Kieran, and hung out with Aisling and her cousins. 

Right before the gig began, Maria came over to talk to our group for a hot second. She talked about Astoria, glass artists Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace, and how the water was “perishing” in Crescent Lake.

MDK: “We’ve played in a lot of weird places, but this is our first time in a bank."

This audience was on the louder side, which reminded Maria of a gig in Europe in an apartment building that had a super strict noise curfew. Instead of clapping, everyone did jazz hands. She told us we should do it for the next song “just for the craic.” When we did, she doubled over laughing.

There was something extra magical about this song. I don’t remember what exactly, but I do remember thinking, “Wow” when it was over. It was like the first time hearing the the higher riff on “Am I choosing right” on ‘Maria Live’ - just chills.

MDK is such a fucking powerhouse. You can physically feel might of her voice - it pierces you. ‘O Molly Dear’ is a beast live, and she was just so in it - dancing and belting.

This song hit me in a way I totally wasn’t expecting. The added bridge - “You’re beautiful just as you are / don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t go as far as you want to” - I just - I cried. It was so powerful to be surrounded by the loving and uplifting energy that saturated the space. Their music is curative. 

Siúil a Rún (Irish)

“I’m just going to down a few lines of an Irish song for [names all the Irish people in the audience].” 

Stars Above

After this song, the woman sitting next to me leaned over and said, “Well, she made the three of us cry *pointing to herself, Aisling, and me* I was looking over and counting.” To be honest, has anyone heard this song live and not cried?

We all went outside to get some fresh air. Maria came over and said, “We have to get a picture!” My brother volunteered his phone, so here’s our only group photo of the night:

She wore it last weekend too. Diane and I kept wondering if it was supposed to be “No” or “On.” She said the people at the shop in Toronto called it the “No” ring, but she wears it so it says “On.” She was also wearing her awesome double gender ring. 

We shot the shit, and then said our goodbyes. Hugs all ‘round. 

It’s difficult process through this, and I’ve only just begun. It’s been a huge year for my family, and I’m grateful to have been healthy enough to experience these historic nights in my life. Beyond words.  

tl:dr: MDK& KK are truly angelic - some the kindest, most generous, beautiful, talented people I’ve ever met, and I’ll cry forever about it.
