I’m almost afraid to ask...who’s Carol Ann

disclaimer: I joked about her in the post that inspired this ask (and have made fun of other aspects of this whole situation) but I do not take any of it lightly.

tw for stalking, me speculating about mild paedo/philia, and general nasty behaviour. also a drugs mention.

For starters, Carol-Anne Hillman is the lady who began Ianto's shrine in 2014, and she's now over 69. Goes without saying that she's the biggest Ianto fan there is. Here's an article about her going into more detail than I will, but to sum up the concerning points:

Carol-Anne refers to herself as a friend of GDL and his family, saying she's played with his kids and has adopted one of his kittens. However,

Her house is (almost) completely covered in photos of her and GDL

She's worn his own clothes whilst cosplaying

A quote: “I’m in love with a fictional character,” she confesses. “But Gareth, he’ll do fine.”

The more concerning stuff was posted a while back on the twitter account TW on Blast, who called her out after she started causing issues in the fandom. The main points:

She used to wait around outside JB's old house, later showing up only when he wasn't at home after legal action was threatened.

Since she's also showed up in GDL's village, it's safe to assume that the Torchwood cast is the reason she moved to Cardiff.

Sent hate mail (and encouraged others to do the same) to RTD, and death threats to James Moran.

Plenty of other instances that have made the cast uncomfortable.

So. Deserving of two restraining orders.

Her twitter is now deleted (I'm not caught up on any new developments and would love to know why), so I can only share what's been sent to the hazmat discord. This time last year she was super active in the fandom and uh

Her fanfiction.net still exists, which I won't link here because a lot of it is disturbing and I really don't have the strength to visit it again. Rest assured it's the shittiest writing since I was twelve on wattpad. A delightful example of one of her works:

Some of the worst stuff we came across was explicit Jack/Ianto sex whilst Ianto is underage, usually 17. There's a trend of school-based fics that always end in M/M SEX. yes ritten written like that

Coupled with some of the comments she's made about GDL's looks (and... Eugene from Random Shoes), it makes the whole thing a little more disturbing. Reminder that this is a woman in her sixties.

I'm sure there's more to be found but trying to keep this brief. I don't know if it's a blessing or a curse that so few people know the origins of Ianto's shrine - on one hand, it's great that she's fading into irrelevance amongst the younger fans, who all treat the shrine like the fun joke it should be. On the other, it's a little concerning that everyone's support is justifying her actions, whether they're aware of it or not.

In my personal (PERSONAL) opinion, I don't think the shrine should have been allowed to continue, and I'm all for tearing it down as soon as possible, despite how much 14-year-old me enjoyed visiting it. The origins are just too much and although it's been all these years since she started this behaviour, I'm surprised how little has been done about it, so it's better late than never to let her know she's not welcome. Fandom field trip to steal her doorbell anyone?

In reference to my original post, I of course don't support the shrine being ruined because of this whole JB situation. My opinions about it are complicated and not fully formed yet, but GDL has had enough weird behaviour from fans to deal with (going beyond Carol-Anne) and I don't think he deserves these threats.

Anyway, this has been a ramble that I haven't proofread. If anyone has an update on Carol-Anne, I'd love to hear it.

i totally get people who say stuff like “idk where id be without my alters” and “i love my alters” and stuff bc DID and OSDD are survival responses and it makes sense to be grateful, and because it’s good for your recovery to get along with the others however that looks for you as an individual, this post is not me bitching about that

but i hate the theme ive seen on like tiktok (my fault for hatescrolling tiktok) where people are like, “oh it must suck to be a singlet, you’re always alone AND always frontstuck” like....i don’t know about you, 15 year old in danganronpa cosplay making spurious claims about DID, but i would honestly really love privacy for once. like the ability to not worry “someone else” will take issue with my thoughts and emotions or that i will suddenly lose control of my body to someone else who may or may not like me and who i may or may not know. I don’t exactly feel bad for people who can be in control of themselves at all times and actually have some restful solitude. sounds nice.

and on the other hand too like, just because you’re “never alone” doesn’t mean you’re never alone if that makes any sense. alters can be comforting and good “company” as it were but they can’t really replace human interaction and being traumatized so early tends to leave you feeling like you’re locked in a tiny little box far away from “normal” people with no clue how they live their lives and with no understanding of a world outside of abuse and pain or how to conduct yourself in it. so um, lmao, it’s like having no fucking privacy and also being devastatingly lonely even in the company of other flesh and blood people. i don’t really understand why you would “feel bad” for people who don’t have this issue. i don’t think anyone should ever feel bad for finding bright spots and having fun with themselves but on the whole it’s not like, an endless party in your head, there are some really really dark spots

I’m sorry for all recent drama in the fandom. I’ve always enjoyed your posts and found you to be very knowledgeable and kind. I remember the people in question had an interesting discussion about descriptions of AB’s skin having racist connotations in Tudor historiography and they complained about people misinterpreting that (they weren’t claiming AB was a woc or suffered racism) and when you guys had a discussion about h7’s Welshness and xenophobia in wotr history that was just as relevant they did the exact same thing and made vague posts plus threw a tantrum over some dumb joke on twitter. On top of that they try to use performative wokeness and identity politics and whine when people call them out on their bs when they’re the ones who started this and literally nobody knew who tf the friend you supposedlyly “ran off” was, much less that she was Jewish. You either own up to your behavior or look like a fool. The sad thing is I think everyone here would agree on a lot of important topics but with childish behavior like that it’s impossible.

Thank you Anon! I’m glad you enjoy my content! And you don’t need to apologise. This insanity is solely the fault of two specific shitstarters and their enablers. How anyone can still defend those two after all the receipts and all the pain they’ve caused is baffling, but it seems like some people might finally be developing a conscience about bullying a black teenager. Then again, they’re also proud of gaslighting people. Classy.

Those two clearly suffer from Henry VII Derangement Syndrome because they’re always triggered whenever someone, somewhere discusses him in any way that isn’t totally negative. I don’t care for their faves Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII, but you don’t see me making petty vagueposts about them or hatescrolling through historians’ Twitters and blogs (honestly, someone explain how on earth they got those takes from this discussion). They didn’t even know Nathen’s tweet was a joke about the UK government until one of us pointed it out, so they tried to save face by first spinning it as ‘inappropriate for Brexit or COVID’ (notice she’s now changed her tune), then as “insensitive” and ANTISEMITIC (ffs). All to retroactively justify their nastiness.

Their persecution complex is so large it has its own centre of gravity. They think the only reason why anyone would criticise Gareth Russell is not because of his bad takes, but because they like Anne Boleyn. It is entirely their right to discuss SJ issues regarding their faves, but please, let others do so too without fear of pettiness and harassment. Their entropy causes them to project their behaviour onto others: apparently, they’re now dragging up Taylor’s month-old baseless claims about ‘us’ calling her “anti-Welsh” for defending Nathen Amin. Repeating lies doesn’t make them any more true lol. Try evidence next time.
