" my doctor says it's normal and not to worry because it doesn't hurt the baby " - really says everything about this.
the thing is like. i get that it's scary and makes people who do desire to get pregnant uncomfortable when we talk about the brutality and violence of pregnancy and the damage that pregnancy can do to your body
but you deserve to give informed consent to that process.
the lies around pregnancy - that it's inherently safe, that it doesn't do you permanent damage, that it's only extremely rare for people to die of pregnancy complications, etc like
all of these are lies constructed so that more people will get pregnant w/o knowing all that
there needs to be more talk about the impact of miscarriages and how common they are, how different abortion processes are and how accessible they are
but also like. talking about how pregnancy fucks your body up should not be taboo
this is a process that permanently changes most people's bodies, and that's even if the pregnancy doesn't do them like. severe illness or injury
and i just think everybody should have a right to KNOW that
bc to live in a society that intentionally obscures and hides facts about a completely optional and dangerous process does so for a reason, and that reason is based in a very sinister ideology that does not value bodily autonomy or informed consent
#misogyny#because it kinda is#tbh ALL women's health is woefully underdocumented/researched#THIS IS A PSA - IF YOU ARE A UTERUS HAVER AND ARE TAKING CONTRACEPTIVES AND ADHD MEDS#AND YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR ADHD MEDS ARE NOT WORKING -#IT'S THE PROGESTIN IN THE CONTRACEPTIVES#also why adhd symptoms can get worse at certain points in the cycle - it's the progesterone (none of my doctors to date have known this)#so my mum is a midwife right#and I still learned all my womens health shit from googling with hyperfocus and podcasts - not even highschool gave me the good info#most people don't even know peri-menopause is a thing (pre-menopause. Regular sleep experiment day "fuck it" of idec.
Again I fell asleep at some point after 10, woke up some time later and laid in bed trying to sleep for what I would estimate was at least about 2 hours, before checking the clock and seeing it was only 12:30 instead of even 3 am.
I'd propose that what I try next is just sleep in two 4 hours shifts, one at day and one at night, but that's effectively what i have been doing and my night sleep just erased itself.
I have crawled out of bed to have a cokey-cola and watch x-files because I don't want to spend yet another night just laying there from before midnight until after 5 without sleeping.
Illicit nighttime caffeine tastes so cold and crisp and fizzy. I actually put this box of them in the fridge before consuming them all so they are actually cold. I was torn between avoiding aluminium and avoiding microplastics, but I wanted to be able to drink it in smaller portions without the whole bottle going flat, so I got cans. Tasty tasty rule breaking.
I don't think it matters, my only hope now is to completely upend my current 'schedule' so I can sleep for more than 4 hours in a day again. I need to so desperately. I am getting weird chest pains again, and my heart acts up more when I am sleep deprived.
I guess another part of the problem is that the time I get sleepy at acts like I have a non-24h sleep cycle, where I have to push my bedtime by 1-3 hours each day or I just lay there awake, but the time I wake up -usually- understands what time it is on the clock and will be at the same consistent hour anyway. I have no problem with laying there awake telling myself calming scenarios until I drift off, but the problem is that if i do that too much, my brain becomes content to lay there all night thinking. It's best for my sleep in general if I can fall asleep shortly after laying down.
I have considered that this might be due to having an alarm which can force me awake at specific times by uh... Waking me up, but even if I set a sleep time alarm, which I do, which I currently have, it can't uh... FORCE me to fall asleep. So my body is trained to wake up at a consistent 24h kind of hour, which it will do with no alarm, but not to get sleepy at a consistent 24h kind of hour... Melatonin doesn't help set this time and sleeping pills do something weird to me that makes me really wakeful if not alert or full of any energy. [The last time I tried sleeping pills I was awake for 48 hours despite laying in bed for over 10 hours doing breathing exercises...]
None of this is a symptom of any disorder currently known to man, unless it just counts as the irregular sleep patterns you expect from a patient with dementia or certain psychotic disorders, neither of which I have to the best of my knowledge. Except the caffeine not being helpful thing, that's adhd for sure. So I don't really think there's any point in prioritizing this issue with doctors over my other problems because they aren't likely to know of disorders that I can't even find mention of on the internet in either formal or informal spaces, especially not my gp, and they can't prescribe me anything anyway due to my metabolism being weird. I have brought up issues sleeping before and I get a lot of shrugging. It doesn't help that I sleep 16 hours a day the other half of the time, so they can't treat one problem without making the other worse.
I have also tried alcohol to try to sleep by now, for the record, and that's how I was able to scrape about 20 minutes out of this.
So now I drink this can of coke, feed my cat, and see if caffeine helps me sleep.
If I can't sleep from now until 5, I am going to try again at just staying awake all day to delete whatever 'schedule' my brain thinks it's on now so I can sleep more than 4 hours. If I can sleep from now until 5... I am going to do that, but also let myself have caffeine at bedtime again.
Fuck it, I don't even care, I just want to sleep.
This is why trying to force myself onto a regular schedule is always a pipe dream that turns into regrets.

things about my interpretation of tony stark. updated june 07, 2020.
here’s my exhaustive explanation for how i am not canon-compliant with the events and characterization of the mcu.
the reason for this is… well, there are several reasons, but i don’t want to stir shit up or just, in general, stomp on anyone else’s love for the mcu. and don’t get me wrong— i do love the mcu! but there are parts i’m critical of for personal reason, as we all have opinions on certain things. bc, yeah, you can love something, or someone, and still be logically critical about it or them.
anyway, here’s where my interpretation differs…
as per stated on my rules: i take inspiration for tony from multiple sources, including the mcu, marvel comics, the television show: avengers assemble, and my own personal headcanons. TONY IS ALSO ASIAN (SPECIFICALLY CHINESE) AMERICAN!!
i will admit that saying this isn’t particularly helpful if people don’t know, specifically, where i differ in terms of my interpretation of our dumbass genius. some of this info is scattered about on my blog, but here, it’s all consolidated into one post.
chen kun is my face claim, and i do use stuff from tony’s story from the mcu as a base. however, there are events and moments from the movies, that i selectively ignore due to personal preference; and then i build on top of my foundation with ideas, themes, and/or events from other sources such as the aforementioned sources listed above.
throwing this all under a read more because, like i said: exhaustive list. very. very. very fucking long. i’m serious– read at your own risk.
howard stark was an extremely abusive and absent father for all of tony’s childhood; tony did actively seek attention and approval from howard because he was rather aware of how famous he was and wanted the acceptance and validation from his dad; there wasn’t much shown in the mcu regarding his relationship with his father, but my inspiration for his father-son relationship comes from the comics;
an example of his verbal abuse: “you don’t want to be a sissy, now do you? stark men are made of iron!” (Iron Man, 1968);
an example of early exposure to alcohol: at age five, howard forced a drink into tony’s hand (which he did drink), stating that it would teach him “to be a man,” and that it’d “put hair on your chest” (Iron Man, 1968);
yes, this means that tony ‘forgiving’ howard in endgame is completely chucked out the window;
tony loses his parents the night of december 16, 1996 (not 12/16/1991), at the age of seventeen;
jarvis, the family butler, was more of a father to tony than howard ever was, and yes, this is why he names his first fully-functioning AI system jarvis;
tony was close with his mother, maria; she was his safehouse, and she taught him to be gentle and loving, and she also taught him the piano, which tony still periodically practices during his own time in private. in an avengers assemble episode, there is a piano in the tower that tony protects twice, which i reckon is because it has connections to his past with maria;
tony ain’t an old grandpa. i don’t see him being older than, like, 35–40 in the present time for my writing (chen kun is 44). this comes from comic and avengers assemble inspiration, which has been fairly ambiguous since they never mention his age. for plotting purposes in the mcu though, yes, he can be like 42–52 if needed.
tony is, by default, single unless otherwise stated. the reason for this is simply because i’m not big on tony / pepper in the mcu, and it’s not because i don’t like pepper (i love her as a character as an individual), but i just saw that the way they were written (so, this, yes, blames the mcu writers) was completely trash; they sort of redeemed it in endgame, but... in general, they had a lot of potential but then some writing choices pretty much ruined the ship for me;
this means that morgan does not exist unless otherwise specified and discussed, though i do enjoy the concert of tony being a dad to his own kid and breaking that cycle of howard’s shitty parenting;
i’m going to be as honest and transparent as i can: i do, for certain, love writing stevetony. they’re my primary ship. not simply in mcu dynamics, but from the comics and avengers assemble. however, like some can attest to, i will never force a ship on anyone. if you express no interest in them romantically? that’s fine. we can write them simply as good friends and comrades. i won’t stop writing or plotting with you if you don’t like them in a romantic dynamic. if you do like it that way? cool. i know it might be intimidating to discuss this given i look like complete trash for them, but i never choose who i will/will not write with based on whether we ship or not;
tony, publicly, hints toward being bisexual and biromantic a lot of the time as he’ll practically flirt with anyone at all times, but he never really openly admits it due to his oh-so ancient internalized homophobia (thank you for that one, howard and societal expectations of the time);
justin hammer is a long time rival in the industry, and often meddles with tony and his work all the time. it’s nothing new. the lack of foundation established in IM2 doesn’t provide much insight into their relationship. long story short (taken from avengers assemble): hammer is a punk bitch who’s jealous and tony is tired of him and will gladly beat his ass any day of the week whenever he drives a tank into his front door (which happens more often than not).
tony is fantastic with children. he loves getting to interact with children because he knows how excited they are to see him and/or iron man (seen in both the mcu and in the comics). this type of attention he’s okay about. if he can inspire children to do good things and be good people and be heroes in their own right, then he’s doing his job;
tony fosters the intelligence and dreams of bright individuals all the time by offering scholarships for high school graduates and post-secondary students, and also provides internship opportunities (equal opportunities regardless of race, sex, gender, religion, disability status, age, etc.)
we only see this occur with peter and harley in the mcu, but there are other kids— like riri williams! tony sees these kids for the bright minds that they have and he wants to help them and keep them safe as he knows these are the brains of the future.
let me run over iron man 3. like i said, i ignore some shit from the movies. tony doesn’t initiate the clean slate protocol, he doesn’t throw the arc reactor into the ocean, and he doesn’t remove the arc reactor from his chest. he will get surgery to get the shrapnel removed because if i were the follow the pain that comes with the comics, tony would literally be always on the verge of death at all times, requiring a chest plate to be recharged constantly to make sure the shrapnel doesn’t get closer– see? that’s a lot and i’m... lazy.
the reason for those choices are simple: clean slate protocol undoes his character progression;
the arc reactor is just a part of him as a person, stands as his heart;
avengers movie nights, (video/board) game nights, and training days exist and you will never be able to pry that out of my hands. tony always shows up fashionably late with coffee and pays for when shit gets broken by thor. team building exercises exist plenty within avengers assemble, including the fact that they share chores and decides who gets to do the next load of laundry from whoever chooses the short stick from the bunch.
tony has had anxiety and depression since he was a child. it just didn’t really flare up and get identified as a real, tangible mess of emotions and thoughts until he’d been kidnapped (and nearly died, at that). it got worse when he failed to address it until after IM3. into the present-day, tony deals with anxiety, depression, and PTSD all the time, but has improved (…sort of) when it comes to handling all of it, and certainly has grown to recognize similar symptoms in the people he cares about;
on another hand, tony has displayed symptoms of ADHD, but it’s not officially diagnosed, and some of these symptoms include, but are not limited to: hyperactivity (staying awake for days on end) and hyperfocus (hyper-focus on work), distractible (easily distracted when he’s not focused on something), rambling (talks a lot and often makes rather intuitive connections due to how busy his brain functions), impulsivity and recklessness (self explanatory), constant need to move around and/or do something (in meetings, he will be moving somehow, whether it’s tapping fingers or feet, or shifting around in his seat);
there are days where he feels inferior due to how human he knows he is (in comparison to most of his team), and other days, he feels as though he’s more machine than he is man. these feelings fluctuate depending on how he’s doing with his mental health, and/or if he hears and/or sees anything about him that points toward either idea;
there is always overwhelming guilt for those he can’t keep safe or people that die; tony doesn’t like to kill anybody (unless it’s robots, because… they’re robots, not human lives); though, if pushed far enough with no other choice, he will throw conventional morality out the window for the sake of protecting all that he believes to be for the good of the world;
tony isn’t jacked. he isn’t captain america fit, but he isn’t particularly thin, either. his body is sort of like a runner’s build (for visuals, refer to valerio schiti’s comic art of tony). i interpret tony’s body as a slight bit slimmer. he exercises, and being in the suit also is its own form of exercise. god forbid we discuss his eating habits, though. and–– he also isn’t short short, but he isn’t tall, either. he sits at 5’10”, which might be a little below the average male, but that’s about it.
speaking of eating habits, simply put: tony can’t cook for shit and that’s it. he’ll try to cook for his significant others’ on the occasion, but he can’t be blamed if he burns everything.
tony isn’t ‘woke’ or perfect, as it’s imperative to remember he grew up as rich and with financial and some social class privilege (since he was rich), despite the abuse and harassment he experienced during his youth. it’s taken him time to recognize this, and he realizes it really doesn’t cost anything to be a better person, which is why he tries to be better when it comes to his tone of voice when discussing certain topics he has no authority to be speaking of, and by taking action with simple manual labour when it comes to chores (so he doesn’t hire other people to do shit for him). he also knows he can’t be a man of ‘all bark and no bite’ when it comes to supporting people and causes, hence why he actively advocates for female and youth empowerment through both words and actions.
in regards to ca:cw events, i would prefer to ignore them. for specific-plotting purposes, this can be dropped, but i prefer the events of avengers assemble when it comes to ‘civil war’. it’s actually really simple:
tony was not honest about his intentions with the team regarding a robot that was initially made for him by howard, which ended up with an ultron reboot that nearly risked loads of civilian lives and the team’s lives;
steve confronted tony about it when they returned back to avengers tower. with tony’s insistence that everything was now fine, steve decided to resign due to tony’s dishonesty and lack of trust in the team;
this splits the team in half, where steve takes— well, they decided to leave since they didn't like tony's lack of honesty— natasha, the hulk, and the falcon to work under SHIELD as the ‘secret avengers,’ and tony, clint, and thor remain as leftover avengers (later with the addition of ant-man and temporarily, spider-man, in some missions);
in the end, they all join back together after learning to appreciate their differences and reconciling under the fact that there wouldn’t be any more secrets that could risk the world, and the team’s safety;
if i am to follow the events of the mcu— between ca:cw and infinity war, he develops nanotech for his armour, which is embedded into his very skin to accommodate for nanobots, which interacts via neural transmissions (visuals here);
tony recognizes that he lost his temper and let his emotions get to him in the moment, which fucked up shit that could’ve been talked through and fixed;
tony is an alcoholic. he recognizes that he always will be, though he’s always working toward sobriety. he certainly relapses every so often when things are rough and he feels as if he has no other options, but he’s aware that relapsing is part of the process of recovery. he has attended AA meetings (alcoholics anonymous), and has been AA sponsors for people in the past;
to skim through the events of infinity war and endgame should these be part of the things you’re curious about (this is getting really long and i’m sure you’re tired of reading this—how have you gotten this far?):
after returning from space, tony took a few months (~ five) to recover from those three months of malnutrition, dehydration, and the wound of thanos’ stab. tony sealed the front of his injury, but he sure as hell wasn’t seen dealing with the back end. during this time, he’s able to regain some muscle mass;
he lives on his own, retreating to the cabin to escape from the responsibilities of being a fallen hero who ultimately failed the people he was supposed to protect.
during the five year gap, he keeps in contact with the other avengers, but very rarely. they’re the only ones who know where he lives;
like i said— tony does not say any of that forgiving bullcrap to howard. victims of abuse don’t have to forgive their abuser, parent or not. let’s just imagine the entire interaction didn’t happen at all;
tony doesn’t die;
he used the infinity stones; but, to maintain consistency with what the mcu established w/ thanos: he sustained significant damage to his right arm, up to the shoulder and neck. it’s gravely scarred. the overall function of that arm also diminished greatly. vision out of his right eye is not as sharp as it once was, either;
a year of recovery and physiotherapy later, tony decides to amputate and go for a prosthetic. he works with shuri and wakandan tech to build an arm;
despite the end of the looming, world-ending thread, tony still battles resurfacing trauma. not every day is happy, but he is working toward recovery. there are days he doesn’t remember chunks of what happened due to the power of the infinity stones; sometimes, he doesn’t even want to remember it, anyway;
tony retires. sort of. for the most part. if the world really needs iron man, he’ll be there;
tony may have handed CEO-ship to pepper, but he still handles a lot of work for stark industries, and that’s what he primarily does post-endgame.
the multiverse and realm-traveling happens a-fucking-lot

Women and ADHD
As promised- a long post about how ADHD affects women. It focuses on symptoms in childhood, relationships and sexuality. Its long, put spaced. Enjoy!
(I often used we instead women/girls/nb with ADHD, don’t get irritated!)
Childhood and puberty
Over a lifetime there are about 5% of girls and 13% of boys diagnosed with ADHD in the whole population. 75% of those diagnosed children don’t outgrow the symptoms.
Girls with ADHD tend to show internalized symptoms, like daydreaming, social withdraw and anxiety, while boys show externalized symptoms like impulsive and aggressive behavior. It’s obviously who will get their diagnosis first, and it mostly has to do with the fact that we raise children in a sexist gender binary system.
We expect children to behave a certain way: girls being nice, helpful and shy, boys rather loud, funny and wild- children unconsciously adjust to what’s expected from them. And even when a girl displays external symptoms, she often doesn’t get the diagnosis
But still- even if ADHD truly manifests when a child is around 12 years old- how can it be that boys clearly display the “usual” symptoms, while girls don’t show symptoms or signs at all?
Expect they do:
as babies and toddlers, we’re often peaceful and easy to handle
strange eating habits, as many neuro-divergent people show as children
late development of personal hygiene and tidiness (as brushing hair or teeth, not being bothered by dirty clothes, hands face etc.)
lots of thumb-sucking, nails chewing or playing with hair (a sign of stimming)
never seems to learn from experiences, a bit of a bullhead
often screams long and loudly when overwhelmed
when we’re upset, it’s hard to calm us down
loves to listen to the same bedtime story over and over again
“automatics” have to be learned over and over again (around 10 to 15 times) until we can do it
loves to go through the same roleplays over and over again (for example taking the role our favorite princess, magical animal etc.)
easily overwhelmed in playgroups or preschools, retreat to their favorite place, playing with the same toys every day
hyperfixations/ hyperfocus (a toy, a game, a book, drawing etc.)
only understands after several repeats
doesn’t seems to be listening, doesn’t know when’s their turn
trouble with motoric skills (as holding a pen, using scissors or walking/running without stumbling)
forgets, puts away and loses things often and remembers nothing
lots of trouble with homework
slow working pace OR very fast working pace with lots of mistakes
as we grow older, we start to get depressive, anxious and cowed
R S D- critics are often experienced as huge drama and er’re easily offended and hurt
cries often and withdraws
the more you remind us, explain us and support us, the worse it gets
neither promises, nor rewards or punishment seems to help
reactive stomach- or headaches
paradox reaction to sedatives (teas, valerian, flu medicine)
Of course, the symptoms mentioned above don’t have to necessary to mean that a girl has ADHD, nor are those symptoms exclusively for ADHD, and boys may show the same symptoms too btw.
The comorbidity whit other mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, dyslexia, autism, social phobia and bipolar disorder is pretty high. Girls with ADHD also tend easier to fall ill to eating disorders.
ADHD symptoms can change and get worse with puberty and adulthood due to the hormonal imbalance during the menstrual cycle. Women with ADHD suffer more often PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). The symptoms due hormonal imbalance can be minimized with contraceptives. ADHD medication doesn’t have an influence on them and vice-versa.
Relationships
Friendships are often rather shallow. Women with ADHD tend to be loners; deep friendships don’t develop often. This comes due to a strong self-protection endeavor and/or high and unrealistic expectations to the friendship itself. When the expectations aren’t fulfilled, disappointment settles in and even might trigger RSD.
In extreme opposite, we have a very high affinity to people with ADHD or people with ADHD similar symptoms. We get along easier with them and quickly find similarities within each other, but it’s threatened by an instability due idealization of the person.
ADHD also affects romantic relationships. This can reach from an impulsive one night stand over on-off relationships to a dead long-term relationship, which can’t be quitted because it’s difficult for our brain to make decisions. Consequences are often forgotten or ignored in the rush of feelings, or we accept a lot of difficult circumstances, like children from an earlier relationship, even if we can’t handle it,
The relationship to own children can be problematic. It doesn’t mean that we can’t be good mothers or parents, but it’s often stained by the huge responsibility that is poorly handled in points like organization, attention, keeping arrangements, planning, controlling emotions and impulsive behavior. We can be bad role-models to our children with ADHD, and those children then have trouble to learn self-control. Single moms face even more difficulties- but it’s possible to get help and there are special courses for parents. The possibility to pass on ADHD is 15-20%.
When one child with ADHD has siblings, their possibility to have ADHD is around 25-30%. If twins they’re twins, it’s about 70-80%.
Sexuality
Our behavior in sexual context often shows that we feel responsible for our partners sexual satisfaction- this may also mean that we tend to agree to sexual practices and activities we don’t like. We tend to have difficulties get physically intimate due to trust and/or sensory issues. Gentle and loving touches might irritate us.
The lack of focus and attention during sexual activities upsets partners often, which again can lead to conflicts. Best way to avoid this is to explain your partner why this happens.
Hypersexual comorbidity affects 67% of MEN. Hypersexuality of ADHD women might occur because of lack of stimulation or self-esteem issues (for example feeling worthless except for sex etc.) but again, no research was made around this question. Even if there is information about this- it’s known that people with ADHD often masturbate a lot in order to stim, and the dopamine release has a calming effect, which can help focus.
Girls and women with ADHD have a higher rate to get pregnant unplanned than neurotypical girls. We talk here about a compare of 40% to 5%. A study from 2003 showed that over the half of underage mothers has displayed ADHD symptoms, and around 50% of mothers under 20! We also have a higher risk to get STI’s. Protection is important!
ADHD meds have shown to decrease fertility in male mice due to the huge weight loss. Again, no researches about women.
There is no research about ADHD in LGBTQ, but some say that lesbians are diagnosed earlier because they don’t behave traditionally female.
(TBH I think the last point is made up, because this has too many factors to consider like age, coming out, family, identifying as femme, butch or neither and so on. I couldn’t find more about it but still, it’s all i had about ADHD and LGBTQ. It’s sad that there are no researches about ADHD in LGBTQ communities, because people there tend to be more understanding and accepting, which could lead to different dynamics and experiences in relationships and sexuality.)

Dual diagnosis is a situation whilst one suffers from a intellectual infection as well as a substance abuse trouble. It is likewise referred to as co-taking place problems (COD). It is a double whammy for intellectual patients who are also drug abuse victims. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), half of the mental illness sufferers also suffer from substance abuse sickness. That approach a incredible eight.9 million American adults suffer from the COD. Ironically, simplest 7.4 percent people acquire treatment for each the situations.
The records additionally advocate that substance abuse and intellectual condition pass hand in hand. So, twin prognosis remedy is important. However, the path main to twin analysis is also strewn with a whole lot of demanding situations because drug abuse itself induces several psychiatric issues in a person. So, it becomes tough to distinguish between a pre-existing intellectual infection and the only brought on by means of substance abuse.
If somebody is treated for a drug abuse problem however the underlying mental situation that would have precipitated the abuse of medication is left untreated, then a relapse is inevitable. No surprise we see such a lot of relapses in rehab facilities that depart human beings pissed off or even greater dissatisfied. The failure to diagnose the hidden intellectual infection resulting in in addition delay of treatment would most effective become worse the circumstance.
However, with this one may be unfastened from the shackles of any mental situation and progress unexpectedly towards sobriety. The respite would best come from an true treatment middle similar to the dual analysis treatment Los Angeles, that are doing a splendid work in diagnosing and treating dual prognosis sufferers.
In dual diagnosis it is merely the case of "which came first, the chook or the egg?" It is frequently tough to ascertain what came first, the substance abuse or the mental disorder. People lodge to alcohol and capsules to beat back depression and intellectual anxiety. But on the opposite they only exacerbate the circumstance and trigger the onset of a vicious cycle for the victim. In one of these scenario it's miles often determined that:
Alcohol and drug abuse may boom an underlying risk of intellectual problems in a person
Alcohol and drug abuse can get worse symptoms of a intellectual fitness problem in a patient
Hence, self-medicating with the help of alcohol and tablets for any mental condition can by no means be the solution for the affected character Los Angeles.

research // “kids on drugs: how pharmaceutical companies are catering to kids”
I
When I was 17, I was admitted to a partial hospitalization program at my local behavioral health hospital. I was depressed, anxious, stressed and on the brink of suicide, and I knew I needed help. If you know anything about me, you know that I talk a lot. I love talking about myself. But at this point in my life, I didn’t have the energy to talk to anyone about anything, even talking to these doctors about what was wrong with me was mentally and physically exhausting.
When I came into the hospital, I told them my story. I knew I had depression and anxiety prior to being hospitalized, but I never sought treatment. I also had trouble sleeping at night. My anxiety constantly kept me awake until 2, 3, or even 4 in the morning when I had to be awake at 6 for school. At this point, I would have done anything not to feel so empty, to feel some emotion and to get more than 2 hours of sleep at night. So I caved, and I took the medication as prescribed by my psychiatrist. My first day in the hospital I was prescribed 10 milligrams of the antidepressant, Lexapro and 50 milligrams of the antipsychotic drug Seroquel.
To clarify for those who do not know, antipsychotics work by “blocking D2 receptors as well as a specific subtype of serotonin receptor, the 5HT2A receptor. It is believed that this combined action at D2 and 5HT2A receptors treats both the positive and the negative symptoms. The atypical antipsychotics currently available on the market include clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, paliperidone and ziprasidone.” (Tung & Procyshyn, 2007). More intense side effects of these drugs include tremors, inner restlessness, muscle spasms, sexual dysfunction and, in rare cases, tardive dyskinesia, while less severe side effects include weight gain, diabetes and lipid disorders.
I also want to preface my story by saying that I was never really into the idea of being medicated, nor did I know a lot about these types of medications, at the time at least. I was put on an antidepressant, which I just assumed would make me not depressed. I was also put on an antipsychotic, and I had no idea how that worked. My doctors initially told me they gave me the antipsychotic to help me sleep. It helped. But it helped too well. After just a week of taking this medication, I was finally sleeping for about 6 hours a night, but I still felt like it wasn’t enough sleep. I’m not sure if this was just my body reacting to finally getting sleep for the first time in years, but I’m pretty certain it was the medication that made me feel like this. I felt like a zombie. I was still exhausted, even though I felt like I was doing everything I possibly could to get a good night's sleep. This medication also made me feel emotionless. I felt like I literally couldn’t be happy and it made things worse. I felt that things would never get better, and I felt this way for about a year.
Almost a year after I got out of the hospital, I was at an appointment with my psychiatrist, who told me that he wanted to try to get me off of the antipsychotics. At the time, I was completely dependent to this medication. It was the only thing that would help me sleep, and I felt like if I didn’t take it, or if I took anything else, that the darkness would come back and my anxiety would creep back up and I wouldn’t be able to sleep. If I was off the medication, I felt like I would have gotten worse, and things could have gotten very ugly. But I accepted it. I knew I had to move on, and be able to figure out a way to sleep on my own, or at least without the intense medication. My doctor then prescribed me hydroxyzine, which is an allergy medication. He promised me that it would give me similar effects to the seroquel, but without all the side effects. I tried it a few times but I knew I definitely slept better with the seroquel. This medication only lasted a few hours, so I was back into this dangerous cycle of only getting a few hours of sleep. The days I took my new medication, I felt defeated, like no medication would ever work.
Eventually, we found medications that work for me, and what these are doesn’t matter. Some days I want to just stop taking the medication altogether, but I am also so scared of what would happen and who I would become if I wasn’t on the medication. I didn’t learn until about 6 months ago, the negative effects that these antipsychotics have on your body. Things finally started to make sense, and I understood why my body did the things it did. When I was first given the antipsychotics, that first month, I gained almost 15 pounds, that never went away, no matter what I tried. I felt sluggish, and even lazy, despite being a competitive cheerleader and working out 6 days a week. My exhaustion was a side effect of this medication.
Today, I am still coping from these side effects. I have learned a lot though. I learned that my doctors put me on antipsychotics because they thought I could possibly be bipolar, and instead of treating me correctly, they just gave me the medication and that was it. When I talked to my therapist about this rather recently, he suggested the fact that I might be bipolar, but that they definitely shouldn’t have treated me the way they did. To be misdiagnosed is very insulting, and to be mistreated is even worse. I feel like I could have progressed so much better while in the hospital and even afterwards if I have been treated correctly.
Unfortunately, I am not the only one that gets mistreated or misunderstood by doctors. For example, take the case of Andrew Rios. When he was 5 months old, he had his first seizure. He was then put on epilepsy medication. At 18 months old, his medication gave him more adverse side effects, such as him acting violently and erratically. He was then prescribed the antipsychotic, Risperdal.
In Andrew’s case, he saw some of the most intense side effects of antipsychotics, at such a young age. His parents became very concerned when he started to scream in his sleep, and would talk to people that were not there. Once the family researched Risperdal, they found out that there were no antipsychotics that were approved for children younger than five years old. (Schwarz, 2015). The main issue here is that “the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the American Academy of Neurology have no guidelines or position statements regarding the use of antidepressants or antipsychotics on children younger than 3.” (Schwarz, 2015) It should also be noted that many doctors would theoretically like for there to be more studies of these drugs on young children, but they do not want to subject these kids to the dangerous and adverse side effects of the medications.
Ⅱ
The overprescription and misuse of antipsychotic medications greatly impact children specifically. This is not because most kids are diagnosed with psychosis or schizophrenia, but because doctors, teachers, and parents alike don’t always know how to deal with: autism or other learning disabilities, mental illnesses or other disorders, or just kids that are “bad” and “act out.” it is important to look at other reasons why these medications are being prescribed, such as looking at the doctors: how qualified they are to be prescribing these medications or what things may influence them to prescribe a certain drug over another. These medications are also prescribed because they are relatively cheap, and for a low-income family, it is much easier to just take medication rather than involve a child in therapies of any kind, mostly cognitive behavioral therapy or group therapies for the specific population impacted.
A reasoning behind why so many people are on these medications is that some doctors, teachers, parents or the patients themselves don’t really know how to deal with a patient's mental or physical illness. The most popular diagnosis among all ages of people prescribed antipsychotics was ADHD, which it is important to note that there is a whole other section of pharmacology dedicated to ADHD and ADD. (Penfold et al., 2013)
On “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver talked about how pharmaceutical companies market to doctors in a very strange way, and that most psychiatrists are paid directly or indirectly by these pharmaceutical companies. Sometimes these doctors will even conduct research about certain drugs and have to say that it works because a pharmaceutical company is funding the research. The show mentioned a website where you could search your doctor and see if they got paid, how much they got paid, and what specific companies paid them. The psychiatrist that prescribed me Seroquel was getting paid over $850 a year, just from pharmaceutical companies. About $300 was from the company Astrazeneca, which created the drug Seroquel. (John Oliver, 2015)
My case isn’t the first and definitely will not be the last. Dr. Charles B. Nemeroff, chair of Emory University’s department of psychiatry reported to the university that he made exactly $9,999 from talks and research he did with the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, but failed to report another $500,000 and also violated many of the university's policies regarding research with third party companies, in 2004 alone. (Angell, 2009)
Another influencing factor in prescribing antipsychotics is because they are relatively cheap, and much cheaper than therapy or other interventions. My parents spent well over $8000 for my hospitalization, $230 for monthly psychiatrist visits, $150 for therapy every two to three weeks, but my medication was only about $25 every month, and this was all under my private insurance. Through my research I found that therapy can treat these children that are acting out or are actually mentally ill, but it takes on average about 12 therapy sessions to see a full affect. For me, that’s 6 months of therapy, which would cost $1,800, and that’s just for my specific therapist. Medication for 6 months would cost the same as one single therapy treatment for me. It is also important to note that the “correct way” of doing things is to have “comprehensive psychiatric assessment prior to initiating psychotropic medication to determine the nature of the child’s illness and whether the antipsychotic medication is an appropriate course of action.” (Harrison et al, 2013)
Ⅲ
Many scholars, doctors and journalists alike have really questioned the ethics within studying antipsychotics on children. In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association issued a list of questionable uses of antipsychotics, basically setting guidelines for doctors prescribing these antipsychotics. Some of these limitations include: “Do not prescribe for insomnia in adults without a severe mental illness diagnosis and do not prescribe to children or adolescents for anything but psychosis.” (APA, 2013) While these guidelines are accurate and reasonable, it is obvious that they were not implemented for many doctors, or taken seriously. It’s great that we had these guidelines, but if there is no regulation or laws that essentially forces doctors to follow the rules then there isn’t much use in having the rules in the first place.
Just this year, Minnesota senator Al Franken proposed the Mental Health in Schools Act. This act promotes a school-based mental health program that is run with the Secretary of Education and the Attorney General. It increases government funding for mental health education and promotion in schools, and essentially insures that schools will have trained personnel that can deal with mental health. Although this bill is great, and it is good that we’re starting somewhere, there are not many specifics as to how this is all going to get done.
The most important thing to do to prevent these cases from ever happening is plain old good education. If we educated parents on their children’s illnesses, they may understand how it can be treated. If we educated parents about medication, they may decide they don’t want to give their children medication. If we just educated the general popular about mental illness and how to properly treat it then maybe there wouldn’t be this negative connotation attached to it.

Interview #3 Transcribed
I asked if I could record our audio, and the respondent said yes. Then audio recording begins.
Me: How old were you with you first got diagnosed?
Respondent: I was 12 years old when I first got diagnosed. I had been in therapy for a while for anxiety. He [the therapist] made the connection that like maybe there is something else making your symptoms worse. So we did a little testing and he told me, “hey you also have ADHD”. They worked in a cycle to where the ADHD would make the anxiety worse and my anxiety would make my ADHD worse. It would play off of each other, like a weird vicious cycle. So that was when I was first formally diagnosed with ADHD, I am not sure how long I have had it before hand. My older brother has ADD so it is possible that I have had it since birth and I just never really knew about it until that moment.
Me: How did you feel when you were diagnosed? Were you relieved?
Respondent: It just kind of made sense. I didn’t really get upset or anything about it you know? Ok, that’s part of me. It’s what I got. I had been alive thus far, I was just going to keep being alive and doing what I was doing. It’s just now I was more aware of that fact, and more conscious of the fact. It explained a lot of behaviors more rather than just me acting out. It was more of a conscious reason for why this was happening.
Me: On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being very minor and 10 being severe. How would you rate your ADHD? And why that number?
Respondent: I would say it fluctuates because it does play with my anxiety. So there are times where it is a lot worse than others. Lately I would say its been about a 7. I think that’s because I am a Sophomore being throwing in a college environment has made me aware of it [ADHD] if not made it worse itself. Especially this year I have been noticing I’ve been having a lot more trouble paying attention in my classes just in general, I guess. Maybe its been like that my entire life and I just haven’t noticed it because high school is definitely not easier than college. You don’t really need to pay attention as much to know what is going on. You can do the assignments and be done with it. While in college you need to be actively participating and paying attention. Maybe it’s the same it’s always been, but I’m just more aware of the fact.
Me: Do you take medicine?
Respondent: I do not. I do not take consistent medication for it. I think the last time I used Adderall was writing my college application essays.
Me: Oh wow so a long time ago.
Respondent: So yeah, a long time ago. Writing essays like that is definitely one of the biggest struggles for me. Assignments or things that I have to write that would normally take someone two hours will take me a week because I can’t get myself to sit down and do it. So doing the college essays was something that I absolutely had to get done, I needed to medicate for it. I haven’t wanted to medicate myself daily, although I am sure it would help a lot. I have definitely considered it, but I am also afraid of how my personality would change because I’ve never done it. If it [taking medication] was something I had done from a young age, I am sure I would have been used to it by now. I’m sure I would understand how I would act or react to taking medication. But, as me now, 19 years old just starting that would definitely change my personality, I am not sure that is something I want to do.
Me: Do you remember having any side effects when you did take your medicine?
Respondent: Yeah, I get really thirsty.
Me: What medication was it?
Respondent: Adderall. I usually took 30mg, and I would get very thirsty. I think that was the most prominent thing. Obviously I was able to pay attention more, I could sit down and accomplish a task. But it was to the point where I didn’t care to stop and eat but I got really thirsty, so I had to pee a lot.
Me: What words would you use to describe yourself unmedicated?
Respondent: Me. I don’t really know much about who I am when I am medicated. When I am medicated I am usually at my house writing essays so I am not really around others, so I don’t know how I would be different on medication. I just know how I am off medication.
Me: Is school really hard for you right now?
Respondent: It’s definitely really tough paying attention in classes. Homework, I think I have learned how to manage it better by starting and stopping. Sometimes it does get bad where I sit down and I just can’t bring myself to do an assignment. But in classes I am hurting a lot, not really being able to pay attention. I hand write notes, but then there is my phone. That is my biggest issue for me. I will be sitting in class writing notes and then all the sudden a thought will pop in my head, “oh I have a package coming in. I should go track that.” Then I immediately have to go on my phone and track the package. Then while I am on my phone I do everything else. It just doesn’t end. If I have a thought such as “I gotta track my package”, I can’t ignore that. I can’t just be like “ill check it after class”. I have to. Once those intrusive thoughts start, I can’t stop them.
Me: What is one thing you wish others without ADHD would understand?
Respondent: I can’t control it sometimes. I am sorry if I don’t look at you while I am speaking, or if I check my phone while I’m speaking, or if I look around the room while I am speaking to you or while you’re speaking to me. I can’t help it; I’m not being rude I promise. I am actively trying to pay attention to you. But my eyes wonder. I need to keep myself more occupied than just listening to your words or looking at your face. Its not a thing of rudeness, its just something I can’t really help.
Me: Have you had any relationships end because of your ADHD?
Respondent: Um, no. I have only been in one long term relationship and I am currently still in it right now.
Me: How about friendships?
Respondent: Um, no not really. At least I hope not.
Me: So does having ADHD affect your social life?
Respondent: I guess it can be kinda hard sometimes because people might not understand the initial view of not really looking you in the eye or not paying attention and that might come off as rude. I don’t know how many people have secretly just not wanted to socialize with me again because of that initial impression or anything like that. I think it makes me a corky person. Also I say the first thing that comes to my mind and I will go on tangents, and that’s just my personality. So in some ways, I think that makes me a fun friend. But I don’t know it is possible that some people see that as standoffish or weird and don’t want to be my friend.
Me: Does your environment play a factor in being distracted?
Respondent: It depends on certain situations. There are times where I absolutely cannot be alone in my room because that itself can be distracting, but places like the UGLI I absolutely hate with every ounce in me because there is too much going on and too little going on that I care about. Small group setting are pretty ideal for me.
Me: How do you cope with your distractions?
Respondent: I just give in to the distractions and not be productive. Until it gets the point where I have to leave to go to class or I have to leave to go eat. Hunger drives me more than anything because I am very hungry person. It’s really hard to not get caught up in the distractions. I guess there’s points where I have to physically move myself to get away from the distractions. But I can’t think of a specific point where I have encountered that at least this far. Most of the distractions are just me going onto my phone, and me falling into my phone over and over again. I can try to put my phone on the other side of the room but then of course I have to check the time to see how much time I have left to do something. The classic “oh wait I thought I heard it vibrate”
Me: How would you describe the conditions in which you keep your room?
Respondent: It’s an organized mess. I know where everything is, and I like it a certain way and that is the way it is going to be. If that makes sense.
Me: Would one see it as messy?
Respondent: No, I don’t think so. It’s definitely not tidy and neat and blank. There is a lot going on, but I need it that way.
Me: What is one thing that someone has told you about ADHD that you know is incorrect?
Respondent: That it’s fake, more than anything. I love watching videos on Facebook where it’s a story of some kid and you read the comments and it says, “another excuse for lazy parents and lazy kids” (grunts) it’s wrong. There is science, you can see the brain differences, stop.
Me: Do you feel different than your peers who have ADHD?
Respondent: Definitely to some extent because they can get things done that I can’t, at least in certain time phrases that I can’t. I know I struggle a lot with exams. I test very very badly. Even with the extra time, which definitely helps, I would do a lot worse without the extended time. But I know I’m smart, I know I’m capable, but I can’t convey that on exams. I just don’t do well on tests and that’s a struggle. Because I know my grades should realistically be higher than they are, but I can’t make them be like that. It’s hard to compare it to friends who do better on tests than I do.
Me: Do you think you have a hard time retaining information? Or is it something else?
Respondent: It’s a lot of stupid mistakes, a lot of stupid mistakes which is hard because I’m an engineer so all of exams at least this semester is math and a lot of calculations. It’s hard to being with, but when you make stupid mistakes like I do, then its just a disaster. It’s hard because my brain either goes too fast that I miss things, or just goes slow enough to where I’m not thinking about the exam at all during the actual exam, I just get one of those thought spirals. But yes, I do struggle sometimes with retaining information but I that’s because my brain tries too hard to do everything and think about everything that it forgets things that actually matter at that point.
Me: Do you have any friends that take ADHD medicine that don’t need it?
Respondent: Um.. (long pause) not consistently. Maybe not so much now, but in high school I did know a lot of people that would talk about buying Adderall. It was like “but why? You don’t actually need it”
Me: Did that frustrate you?
Respondent: A little bit. I guess it’s almost like monetizing my disability. You know what I mean? That medicine was created to help people like me and you are using it. People use it to get high so to speak, and that’s a little ridiculous.
Me: What words would you use to describe your brain?
Respondent: Um.. It’s a mess. Everything happens at once, it’s a little hard to keep everything organized and sort of push it in a certain direction because even if you do it’s going to chose another in half a second. It goes everywhere, it does everything at once, pretty much.
Me: If you could get rid of your ADHD, would you?
Respondent: I don’t know, because I guess if I really wanted you know, I could start taking medication. But like I said, I don’t really do that because at this point in time, my personality is probably largely based off my ADHD and I don’t know how it would change if I start take medication, or if I take it away so to speak. I don’t know what I would be like. So I don’t really have a before and after to compare to know whether or not I would be better or like myself even more. I know it would make my academics easier, but that’s what I believe right now. I’ve never tried it. So in my mind, maybe taking away my ADHD would have me excel a lot more, but maybe I’m just using my ADHD as an excuse. Maybe it wouldn’t actually change anything. I don’t know, I don’t know. I don’t think I would take it away.

Rainbow Light PMS Relief Quality of Ingredients
Rainbow Light PMS Relief differs from many other supplements that target hormones. It’s made with a number of herbs that have the ability to provide a calming, or even sedative effect with use — which seems like it may slow some consumers down.
Vitex is the only ingredient present in the Rainbow Light PMS Relief formula that is known for its effect on hormonal balance — a key element in helping women deal with PMS, as well as more severe menstrual issues like PCOS or PMDD.
Rainbow Light PMS Relief is not a menopause product, and while those same hormones dictate menstruation, in general, and menopause, this product likely will not provide the full support that the menopausal woman needs in an herbal supplement.

Rainbow Light PMS Relief appears to no longer be sold by Rainbow Light, at least at this point in time. During our search for this supplement, and the company that makes it, we ran into an ad citing new Rainbow Light supplements—suggesting that the company may be in the midst of a revamp.
The Rainbow Light website, is overall nice looking. It’s easy to navigate and there’s not an onslaught of information on the home page. Should you decide to flip through the rest of the site, you’ll learn that Rainbow Light uses spirulina algae as the food base in all its supplements — adding another layer of nutritional benefits to their range of supplements.

“My period has always been an uncomfortable affair, but when I hit my mid-thirties, it got worse. This product has helped me combat migraine headaches, extreme mood swings and other symptoms.”
“Been having several period problems as I’m entering perimenopause. This product helps with my bloating and mood swings, but it isn’t a magic pill. I’m still getting back aches and cramps. Plus, pills are huge.”
