With Irving seemingly being an ex-military man, do you think he went through the same thing as innie!Irwing before leaving the army? With the "don't ask don't tell" politics, it feels eerily obvious that Irwing worshipped his father and joined the army only to discover his sexuality and rebel against the establishment because he fell in love?

Innie!Irving seems to be very trusting, friendly and open-minded, but he is also fiercely loyal to his principles and ideals (and people around him, too, which is less obvious because he lacks the "us vs them" mentality that loyal people sometimes display). Loving Burt and being willing to go through hell for him is perfectly natural to his character, after all he was immediately locked in on trying to help Helly to transition to innie life, BUT the series misdirects us because he does it in THE MOST awkward way.

But he does help! He wants to get her out of the office and make her move physically (instead of sitting around), make her curious about the world, which is actually what Helly needed, he just quoted the scripture the whole time, and we were thrown off by that!

And if we take those characteristics at their face value (friendly, open-minded, loyal, brave, values integrity, wants to be helpful and knows how to be helpful) then yeah, hot outie!Irwing goes very well with that!

Innie!Irving is also quite dramatic and appreciates art, and guess who wears cool leather jackets and paints every night? (and no, it's definitely not just to communicate, innie!Irving wouldn't have been able to perceive it if it wasn't something that Irwing's body enjoys doing and knows how, I think)

I actually think that all innies use outies' social skills and have the same core values! At the very least, both Marks are very skilled manipulators, both Dylans are altruistic and value family above all else (in fact I think Dylan's thing for perks might have been an expression of despair that he had to go through severance for his family, a very serious sacrifice, and a subconscious desire to overcompensate for that) AND both of them are VERY awkward and focused on performance (Dylan's ambitions as an echo of his desperation?).

With Helly it is purposefully difficult, because we are definitely being misdirected to misunderstand Helena! Right now it seems that Helena is very lonely and fell for Mark like immediately, from videos (the proverbial erotic fixation, if you will!), and that she is confident and is good at masking her true emotions. Something that Helly is notoriously bad at. Did Helly fall for Mark that quickly? Idk I think she might have? Not sure.

“Helly was never cruel” is SO satisfying cause honestly even before I either heard/considered the “Helly is Helena” theory I remember getting so mad at some Helly/Helena scenes on the severed floor this season but I couldn’t put my finger on why and was like, angry at the writers for mischaracterizing Helly.

Then once I had an inkling of “what if this is Helena pretending to be Helly” those moments made so much more sense. There are still some moments where it truly does FEEL like Helly but others that are just like, off.

And the moment in question of her being cruel that Irv brings up was one where I was like “that had better be Helena cause otherwise I’d be upset”

Gosh, i love this woman a lot, AND BABY PRICE, i actually went with playing with military uniform/gear designs, and decided that his is modified (by himself with the permission of Galeforce).

ohhhh outie irving's thing goes so much deeper than I could have imagined. it was pretty obvious that he chose to become severed to try to use his innie self to communicate with and learn more about the severed floor and he's been doing all those paintings in the hopes his memory of the testing floor will bleed through to his innie, but this episode implies he's part of a much bigger conspiracy than just that.

irving is not some lone vigilante as I expected him to be. he's working with at least one other person to try to communicate with innies and spread knowledge of the goings on at lumon using his place as a plant on the severance floor. perhaps even the same people that helped petey become reintegrated.

he knows he's being watched and makes anonymous calls a ways from his home. he immediately had a cover story when milchick turned up like he was expecting to be questioned. he doesn't want to reveal that his innie woke up on the outside and is trying to figure out exactly how much lumon knows, and refuses to reveal his own hand before this. he tells milchick to tell him what all this is about so he can get a better grasp on how much he needs to lie about. he IMMEDIATELY distrusts milchick's motivations.

he has no idea what just happened and why, only that there's a chance all the work he's been doing on the outside has finally started paying off and he can't risk undoing all that progress by accidentally admitting to something. for all he knows his innie put this all in motion himself. he doesn't know it's part of a completely unrelated plan with his coworkers to break out. so he lies and pretends nothing happened because admitting his innie broke out might also fuck up the rest of whatever he's planning/working on. he's protecting both of his selves from a company he very clearly now is working to undermine.

he made sure to get home quickly after waking up at burt's (i still need to know how that played out, thanks!) so it looked as if he'd been there the whole time. the gears are immediately turning wrt his innie going to burt. he's trying to figure out how that guy fits into all this. maybe he's even going to approach burt thinking he's a co-conspirator on the outside and try to enlist him. I wonder how he will react when he finds out that's not the case at all and their connection is much more individual and personal than that. when he finds out his innie almost sacrificed all the work he's been doing the past three years because he fell in love and got his heart broken by this guy. I wonder if he'll ever find out.

severance comic process write up (unasked for)

i finished season 1 of severance jan 24 and maybe by then NL had already begun his apple tv tirades. so maybe that's why i thought of the get it twisted speech? dont remember exactly but i was like wait......... this kinda fits...... and basically the images were forming in my head and i had to get them out. this is the best kind of inspiration to have. when it feels like you are afflicted with a life-threatening disease and the only cure is to draw pictures

i decided i wanted square panels and a black and white color scheme pretty early on. i wanted the pacing to feel kind of fast, so one line per page (basically i was trying to match the monologue). black and white also made sense because 1) i didn't want this to take 2 years like my last comic 2) fits theme of the show and the monologue rapidly whipping back and forth 3) i thought maybe i'd riso print this in the beginning and 1 color would be cheapest/easiest

the sketching phase was really smooth. it was like the images were in my mind already and just needed to be brought to life. my motivation was strong as well (i thought it was really funny and if no one liked it at least i really really liked it).

^ my sketches. most compositions made it to final without major edits. i did cut almost all of the last 8 because i didn't feel like I needed the moment to be dragged out so much AND i was getting pretty tired by that point lol.

one page i'm glad i changed was the ms casey one. the reason i changed it at first was because i thought it was too similar to the irving/burt one. and then i ended up really liking the new composition.

as i moved to final, i had a couple of inspirations in mind. i'm a huge fan of sophia foster-dimino's work, and in particular her sex fantasy comics

i also was inspired by jennifer xiao's comics and how chootalks and nogoodwithcat handle linework and value

i was inspired by jennifer's pop up ads comic for this page. i like the humor in her work and wanted to bring an element of that into my comic.

i love these drawings by choo that showcase these eerie tableaus of desserts/cakes/hammers/etc! i was trying to evoke the same vibe with the two "get it twisted" pages with the stack of waffles.

also, just tons and tons of references taken from the show and stock images.

i pretty much just worked for two weeks straight until i finished. what unemployment does to a motherfucker. even though it's fanart and the words aren't mine, it's a pretty personal comic. i got suddenly laid off last fall which has made me feel all sorts of feelings, and then starting up my job search this year has been grueling. it kinda blows my mind that anyone expects you to love your job. i love my cat. i love the people important to me. i love moving my body and eating good food and listening to music and being out in nature. i love the color green. i dont love my fucking JOB lmfao!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are you freaking CRAZY???????? literally do NOT get it twisted. but also please hire me. <- this dichotomy has been making me nuts

anyway. the reception to my comic has been mind blowing. people have said some insanely nice things. i also really appreciate anyone who's read and enjoyed the comic without knowledge of severance or northernlion LMAO honestly amazed and in disbelief.... ty so much..... it really means a lot!!!!!!!!!!
