“Helly was never cruel” is SO satisfying cause honestly even before I either heard/considered the “Helly is Helena” theory I remember getting so mad at some Helly/Helena scenes on the severed floor this season but I couldn’t put my finger on why and was like, angry at the writers for mischaracterizing Helly.

Then once I had an inkling of “what if this is Helena pretending to be Helly” those moments made so much more sense. There are still some moments where it truly does FEEL like Helly but others that are just like, off.

And the moment in question of her being cruel that Irv brings up was one where I was like “that had better be Helena cause otherwise I’d be upset”

helly in "cold harbor" is very interesting to me because i feel like we're starting to see a side of helly that we haven't really seen before. some people are pivoting to the "what if she's helena again" theory which i personally find very cheap and uninteresting compared to the implications that it is our helly bring:

point a: "i'm her"

jame telling helly that she's got kier in her and helena doesn't seems to have done a number on helly. like she's been struggling with this identity crisis the entire season, no one from mdr except for irving could tell helena from helly, helena still has complete autonomy over her body, and now jame eagan, the person who's most responsible for the position helly is in, told her that he sees kier in her. i think that's what made the switch flip in helly a little bit, like she admitted that helena is a part of her. and she also acknowledges that she can't follow mark, because as mark himself stated, helena would never reintegrate. and even if she did, how would they be together? which brings me to point b:

that did feel like a very cruel thing to do, knowing what we know as an audience. but helly doesn't know gemma or mark scout. she only knows ms casey and mark s., and whatever she knows about the testing floor, she knows from mark s.

we've also seen her be very radical about innie/outie separation (a trait she seemingly shares with helena). she insists that she is not her outie up until the very last second, she tells dylan that gretchen is not really his wife, she's his outie's wife. i feel like there are moe examples but i can't think of any at the moment

so when gemma gets into that stairwell, she stops being an innie. she's free, she's got what helly wanted for the entire first season — and the person she's screaming for isn't her husband, it's mark s., helly's friend and romantic partner and whatnot

and helly was ready to let mark leave her behind and reintegrate, but when mark chooses to leave and remain an innie, she lets herself make the same choice. she doesn't have to be helena eagan, she's her own person and so is mark s.

SEVERANCE SEASON 2 FINALE SPOILERS!!!

Holy fuck. They did it. Gemma survived and reunited with Mark.

But then the brutal twist was that innie Mark didn’t go with her. Turns out that Gemma was Orpheus all along - and she lost her Eurydice.

Honestly? I can’t be mad. Innie Mark did the right thing in the end and got her out (and had a fantastic, if not brief, make out session with Ms. Casey which I hope spawns a few fanfics). I was hoping that the two would come to some kind of deal but it was evident since the beginning that both Marks were at an impasse.

I will always be a Mark x Gemma truther but I have to admit that Mark x Helly actually clicked for me this episode. I really get it now.

Do I think they’re gonna have a happy ending? No. They’re both stuck in hell with a very pissed off Jame Eagan and Milchick. Wouldn’t surprise me if this season will be considered “the good old days” for those two.

The end of the episode was so fucking chaotic. My God. It was borderline slapstick comedy with Jame screaming “FUCK” with the vigor of a much younger man and then Dr. Mauer and the creepy nurse running around like penguins with their ass on fire.

The last thing Dr. Mauer said before Mark and Gemma went back up. “You’ll kill them all!”

Ominous. No idea what that means. The innies? Gemma escaping means that their lives are in danger somehow? Or something else entirely. Her escape clearly put a wrench in their plans for mass market severance.

Drummond dying I immediately clocked when I saw Gwendolyn Christie again, and then saw the gun. What a fight. Poor Adam Scott having to film all that, LOL.

The Mark x Gemma reunion scene? Fucked me up real good! I’m so happy they didn’t kill her off and anyone who says that Gemma had to die, I hope you’re enjoying a nice slice of go fuck yourself pie. I’m rewatching it as we speak.

The Mark x Gemma separation scene where innie Mark chooses Helly? Also fucked me up good! Gemma screaming for Mark - Severance writers, I am in your goddamn walls. I’m sure Devon’s waiting outside in a getaway car with Cobel and she’ll explain what’s going on with that.

Gemma surviving means MORE DICHEN LACHMAN. GET HER TO SERIES REGULAR RIGHT NOW FOR SEASON 3. Gemma main character as she plots to get her husband out and burn Lumon down. Orpheus and Eurydice ALL OVER AGAIN. SIGN ME UP.

Other random thoughts:

- Outie Dylan’s response to his innie was really sweet. And what a badass Dylan G turned out to be, helping Helly against an enraged Milchick.

- Disappointed that Milchick didn’t crack in the finale but I suspect it’s happening soon. His remark about the Eagan animatronic’s inaccurate height was hilarious.

- No Irving. Sad.

- Mark x Gemma stocks WAY UP now that she’s survived. You can’t keep a good pairing down, baby. She’ll be looking for Mark, no doubt about it.

- The absolute mind numbing horror of Cold Harbor Gemma being told to dismantle the cradle. Being dressed in the same clothes that she wore the night she died. Lumon really gotta go, bro.

- Mark coming in to rescue her, her innie having no idea who this strange man is. Mark looks the absolute worst, covered in blood, sweating, deranged - but she still trusts him enough to follow him out. Love fucking transcends Severance!!!!

- The big showdown between innie and outie Mark was . . . kinda underwhelming? I thought there would be a lot more back and forth. I wonder if outie Mark knew deep down that if he went into Lumon there was a chance he wouldn’t come back out and maybe that he was okay with it, long as he saw Gemma again. I’m glad innie Mark kept to his word and, like I said earlier, am not really upset that he chose to stay with Helly.

- The whole marching band sequence. Holy shit. Give Tramell Tillman all the awards. It was so bizarre and so well executed.

- NO DEVON AND GEMMA REUNION!!! We gotta wait a while 2 years for these two sisters to be reunited, I AM IN YOUR WALLS DAN ERICKSON.

- Where the hell is Cobel during all of this??? I thought she’d be waltzing in to take back her technology but it seems not? Weird. We’ll probably see more of that next season but no idea what the hell she’s planning.

I’m probably missing a lot but it’s late and I need to rewatch the Mark x Gemma reunion scene until it’s burned into my retinas.

Whats the running theory on severance?

I think it has to have something to do with immortality. Cobel specifically makes me think that because i think the reason she was watching mark so closely is because the experiment that he’s a part of will determine if the girl/woman she loved can be saved or possibly “uploaded.” I think Charlottes innie is preserved in that brain chip thing so she was hoping that marks innie would remember Gemma or marks outie would have some idea she was still alive because then the person she cared for could possibly come back in another body or something.

Speaking of gemma, i think she really is dead and its marks innie who’s breathing in her ghost, though i dont know how that all would work. I just dont think this ends happily for mark, or at least, i think he finally learns to let her go as thats kind of his arc in the story.

What i dont get though, is that gemma wasn’t part of lumon (that we know of) before she died, and mark definitely wasnt because he “chose” to be severed as a result. So, if shes not dead somehow, then she must have chosen to join this program for some reason and not told him and is now trapped there until the experiment concludes somehow.

P.S helly in season 2 is definitely helena. This lady saw genuine affection for the first time in her life and was like studying it. I dont think she’d derail whatever experiment is happening to mark for his sake or her own affection for him, but i do think shes going to prolong it somehow until shes done using it as exposure therapy or some shit.

Also, irving is a fucking spy! Bro is one of those ppl trying to take down lumon probably because he thinks they killed his dad or something idk

One of dylans kids probably has health issues and i feel like hes going to be sacrificed and dylans innie is a goner. (sidenote, i wasnt a fan of how he spoke to his wife. It was a bit too rude and he didn’t apologize for his tone.)

Ohmygod that was wild. First of all wow we were right that was Helena after all. I did get pretty sure when the lighting was red during the sex scene.

Okay thoughts.

Didn’t Helena basically just assault Mark S.? He didn’t know he was having sex with Helena he thought he was having sex with Helly oof that’s dark

It’s also kinda sad because I think Helena did it because she was trying to experience love? She was jealous Helly her innie who she sees as subhuman got to experience something she never has. So she wanted to experience love with Mark wanted to see what it was like to be Helly and be loved. Obviously that doesn’t excuse that doing that without Mark’s consent was messed up but Helena doesn’t view Mark S. As human so I don’t think she viewed it as assault she viewed it as using a tool to get what she needed. She wanted love and he was a tool she could use to get it. (Not an excuse yet again just a thought)

Helena being the one to laugh at the story was interesting. Like Kier is HER ancestor who she was raised her entire life to revere as the leader of her bloodline and raised to worship him. And yet she sat there and she laughed at him and laughed about the story. Made fun of it. It seemed so surprising for Helena to do that I wondered if we were wrong and if that was actually Helly or if it was a brand new person where Helly and Helena had reintegrated. I wonder why she did that? I feel like that shows she doesn’t believe her family’s hype. She’s not as brainwashed as I thought. Which is also kinda sad because that means she’s caged. If she doesn’t really believe in her family line in that way and doesn’t take her bloodline seriously but yet still goes along with whatever her family tells her to do, that shows she’s not brainwashed, she’s caged. She’s Helly but in the outside world. Maybe even worse because Helly has free will as an Innie she gets punished but she has free will and she has multiple people in her life who love her. Helena, seemingly has no one, and no real free will. I think she decided to take that opportunity to make fun of her ancestor cause she could. There were no cameras in the wilderness, none of her family was there, her father would never know, so she took her freedom and she ran with it. Even if Milchick told someone who would believe him over her? She outranks him. That’s probably why he threw the marshmallows away. He knew that was the only punishment he could give her. But yeah at the end of the day, Helena is in a gilded cage. And being an Innie was probably the only time she ever felt free. And I don’t think Helena was lying. I think she really is ashamed at who she is on the outside. I think she was telling the truth. You could tell from the way she looked at Irving when he asked who she really was, what she really saw on the outside. She stared at him, and she genuinely teared up. She looked genuinely sad. And like she felt sympathy for him. And then you watch her put her walls back up. And she walks away. And finds comfort in Mark S. I think she does feel guilty for what she’s done. Now does she feel guilty enough to do anything about it? I don’t know. Her father seems to have her locked up pretty tight.

I wonder what’s gonna happen now that everyone knows who Helly really is. And now that Helly knows who she is. And now that they know that Helena was occupying her body. Now that they know it’s possible for that long of a time. The implications of that are kinda insane.

And what’s gonna happen to Irving? Will his outie wake up in the woods? Will he wake up at home? Is Irving B gone forever?? The questions I have.

Severance season 2 ep1 thoughts/theories under the cut

Ok FIRST of all whomst the fuck is this creepy guy we see in the background after Mark goes to Wellness in the beginning of the episode???

2. The italian guy is played by an actual italian actor, and him saying "Why's he standing weird?" when Mark comes in the office first time was so unexpected lmfao

3. I'm 100% conviced everything Milchick told Mark is bullshit. "It's been 5 months"? then why does it look like he just moved into Cobel's office? Who's been managing the severed floor in the meantime?

The photo is in black and white and the cars are old models, this is in line with Lumon's habit of only exposing innies to dated technology. Now lets zoom in a bit shall we

"Mark S, Helly R, Irving B, and Dylan G, the very famous “Innies” (…) All four of them gave speeches, praising the “courageous” acts of their Innies and thanking Lumon for its accomodations." -> If the outies gave the speech, then why are they dressed as their innies? Plus look at Mark smiling. Dude would not be smiling. He didn't smile before, and he's not going to have anything to smile about now, we saw him in the trailer and he was a mess.

4. They're trying to pin everything on Cobel, make it seem like SHE was the sadist and deviant (and she was, but god forbid women have hobbies. also the "throuple" things was hilarious and holds so many implications?? dating someone's innie and outie at the same time is a throuple??? lmfao) that did all that while Lumon only wants the best for its employees. Milchick is lying making it seem like the MDR gang changed things significantly with their going on the outside. But IMO it hasn't been 5 months, and we dont know exactly how the outside is taking the news but it definitely is not as black & white as "these innies are heroes and everybody loves them". In the meantime Milchick is trying to appease them by offering more perks, snacks, etc. and by pretending he's the good guy that doesn't want to be their jailer.

6. There is no way in hell there are no more cameras on the severed floor

This is immediately after being shown the video with their conversations and VOICE RECORDING taken from the security cameras. Without their consent. Like be for fucking real right now.

7. This part of why the others weren't present, and what comes after is really strange and can't form an opinion on it

Let's think about it. Would Dylan refuse? his innie didn't go to the outside to make trouble. He doesn't seem to suspect anything about Lumon either, at most he saw what Helly said on tv but like, for him that day was just a regular day except maybe that he came back from work later. Would he be so adamant about quitting his job after just that? Seems kinda strange.

Irving obviously has something going on with Lumon. The paintings of the elevator, plus the fact he has a list of Lumon's severed employees in his home for some reason? He's definitely digging into Lumon. Obsessed as he is, I doubt he would quit.

Helly actually makes sense that she would not come back bc for starters she doesn't want to be there, and after how much damage she's done I doubt Helena would let her return, but we have that whole theory about Helly being Helena in this ep so....yeah

Anyway it's all very strange. Mark comes back alone and Milchick tells him it's because the others quit (or we fired them and arent telling you), sorry! Then Mark has a tantrum because he wants his friends back and suddenly they ARE back? Like the next day? Or IS IT the next day?

8. Which brings me to the next point, the time Mark goes in the elevator after his transgression and apparent firing is really, really weird. Instead of the normal transition of him changing his expression as he becomes his outie, and then changing back as he goes down the elevator again, we get a BLACK elevator and a BLACK screen

You know what other elevator is black??

I think he stayed in the testing floor at least until the end of the day, possibly more, and they fucked with his perception to make him think he went back up. Also, in that scene we don't see the arrow on the elevator

As far as we know, the elevator for the regular entrance could also go to the testing floor, not just the black elevator. And maybe the arrow on it changes depending on if it goes up or down.

As for the others from team MDR, they might've been in the testing floors too during the work day, possibly without their outies knowing, who knows. I don't think they'd be there permanently like Gemma, not after their publicity at the Lumon event in which there were their photos, and Helly's speech at said event. But this is just a theory, I don't think there is enough material to fully support it, except for Mark.

9. The whole video segment. What the fuck. Taking their rebellion and making it part of the narrative for the oppression?? Including their private moments and other things taken completely out of context with recordings of their own voices?? Truly dystopian evil shit. Loved the stop motion animation though, gotta hand it to Lumon. Also is that Keanu Reeves's voicing the building???

10. Is Helly really Helly or is she actually Helena? Hard to say at this stage but I'm leaning more on her being Helena. She's just acting weird. The lying first of all; on one hand, it's been a hot minute since everything happened so lying might be just a first instinctual reaction, like denial. But on the other hand, at the event she still spoke out against her outie and denounced the whole company in front of everybody. Why would she be ashamed of her hatred for her outie and Lumon now?

Irving clocked in on her immediately lol. I think he figured it out so he doesn't want to tell the others what he did on the outside while she's there. Also the way "Helly" looks at Irving and says "...Yeah" to the question before this is very sus to me, can't explain it with just screenshots though.

Plus it's just the way she acts in general. Very subdued, less sassy, trying too hard to be sympathetic with Mark and the others, feels forced. There's that scene in the trailer of Helena "studying" the security camera footage of her innie, possibly to learn how to act like her. She's looking at Helly kissing Mark, and then in ep1, she offers her support to Mark to find Gemma etc... I'm not saying Helly wouldn't help Mark, but the way she tells him gives me strange vibes, and it's also strange that she decides to stay at all just for him.

11. Irving man. Just. Holy shit 😭

Also Dylan and Irving friendship!!!!!!!!!!! Screaming crying throwing up etc. Not gonna expand on this or this post would go on forever but man the actors really gave an outstanding performance. What a scene

12. Finally the big reveal of what kind of data the Macrodata Refinement boys are refining

BROOOOOOO i was. not expecting that holy fuck. So they've been "refining" the data on like. the brain? of the other severed employees through their chip? They're sorting it into bins then what? They're deleting memories? Locking them up, or sorting them between stuff they're supposed to remember as innies vs what they should forget??? Is that why the numbers are scary??? Even if that's why, how do they know the numbers are scary? Also, there is a time limit on files, right. What happens to the person associated with the file, when they don't refine it to 100% within the limit? Is this for like, every new severed employee, or just the ones on the testing floor? So many questions holy shit

Anyway thats enough rambling for this ep, I really hope in the next one we see the outies so we get some clarity on what's going on. But man what a start

GUYS JUST FINISHED S2 E1 OF SEVERANCE AND IM GOING CRAZY

WARNING FOR HUUUUGE SPOILERS:

OKAY I NEED TO START SOMEWHERE—(keep in mind these are all theories)

Helly— Did anyone else think she was off? My theory is that it’s Helena Eagan who’s acting as Helly. The way she didn’t actually rip Milchick into pieces on SIGHT. She didn’t tell anyone about what she saw (which seems like something she would tell them because she’s an EAGAN FOR FUCKS SAKE) and also that she’s been reaaaaly weird abt Mark having a wife even thought there’s much more pressing issues at hand. It’s almost like she’s acting, and all she was told was her cover story, that she and Mark kissed, and that she hates outies.

Ms. Casey/Gemma— WHAT WHY WHERE. Where is she? Still don’t know. Why hasn’t Mark asked Milchick about it? He was insistent on the “Where is my team?” stuff, why wasn’t he on the Ms. Casey stuff too? Also, is she dead dead or did they do something brain-wise?

Irving— IF something’s up with Helly, I think he noticed and that’s why he only told Dylan about what he saw. Also why didn’t he leave? Why (maybe) can’t he leave?

Outies— Why haven’t we seen any of them yet? From the little bts thing, we saw outie Mark and Mark S. switching—almost like Petey. In that case, does that mean they’ve all been reintegrated and side effects haven’t shown up yet? I think if this is the case—or not— whatever’s happened to Ms. Casey, they might have done to MDR.

Devon— If outie Mark is back and alive and well, what is Devon doing about it? She knows that Ms. Casey is alive (not who she is as an innie, but just in general) and she would probably tell Mark as soon as he was back. Also Ms. Cobel? She knows about that now.

Ms. Cobel— Where is she? Was she killed? Is she working from the inside? Is she really gone from Lumon, or is she some sort of acolyte to the board? Why does her name still show up on Milchick’s computer? Does that mean Milchick isn’t really the one who runs this whole thing?

Mr. Milchick— Why does Ms. Cobel’s name on his computer bother him so much? Is he actually trying to reform the severed floor or is he just bluffing? What’s his deal with the family visitation room? Why did he let the MDR team see them again? Is he like a puppet, or is he genuinely trying to do something?

Miss Huang— Apparently Miss Huang is supposed to be Mark and Ms. Casey/Gemma’s kid according to some articles my dad read (but also want the crash like only 2 years ago?) WHY IS SHE SO CREEPYYY? Does she have something to do with the control of the severed floor? She seems to know more than she’s letting on. She also seems to not like Mr. Milchick, which is similar to how Ms. Cobel didn’t really like Milchick. I think she might be an extension of Ms. Cobel of sorts.

General outside— At least with Helena/Helly, news has got to have been broken. What is happening regarding severance outside? What happened after Irving got switched back and was banging at Burt’s door? What happens with that pro-severance guy and his wife?

ANYWAYS, that’s some of my takes and questions on this. Can’t wait for e2 on Friday!

Curious how this impacts Dylan. Who was screaming “LEAVE HIM ALONE” and cares so much more about Irv than he seemed to about his outie wife who he has no recollection for. It’s fascinating to me the way that Lumon is trying to control him with his outie family but this episode seems to reaffirm that HIS family is the people around him. He’s going to be so interesting to watch the next time we see him

Okay last thought, the way Milcheck is able to just use a walkie talkie and say “now” to get them to “turn off” Irving says to me that they’re still at Lumon, or at least that Lumon is watching even here more than they think. Walkie talkies are short range so the person in control of the innies must be close by. He doesn’t specify what’s happening more than that, yet someone knows what to do. Maybe it was just for the ✨drama✨ of the one word kind-of-execution but maybe it wasn’t! Idk! I am going to read into everything now that Helena was confirmed!!

He's got more rebellion against Lumon in him than anyone else we've seen (bar Helly lol), but he's simultaneously got Irving's same temperament and the same love for Lumon's principles. A really interesting dichotomy that I think even Irv loses after Burt retires. He's independent and willing to bend rules but he still knows the rules front and back, still finds Kier and his mission beautiful. How interesting. Maybe he's actually the most intriguing guy here who's knows. I really hope he gets to be a bigger character in season two instead of being demoted.

Even if Graner was helping Milchick that night too,  either the custodial staff have a lot more power than we thought or there's still somebody walking around the halls that we haven't seen yet.

I remember when I first watched the show I didn't realize that that was also Dichen Lachman in the photograph at all for some reason, so the big reveal totally went over my head and I did not feel that emotional punch 😂 feeling it now though! And Billie Holliday to hit it home ;( I think it's interesting Mark's voice over during this part, obviously phrased like Ms. Casey's wellness sessions, but I don't know if that was just a stylistic choice for the viewers benefit to help connect the dots, or if it's actually an audio clip from some thing we haven't seen yet.

A Disturbing Discovery

“Here we go again” thought Helly finding herself in the elevator again, as every morning. Every morning, she thought, while realizing that she didn’t know what “morning” actually looked like. Neither the knew what “night” looked like. It felt like something you would remember from watching it in a movie, like something someone told you once, but not really something you experienced. She tried not to think about how innies didn’t really know about the real world.

She wasn’t feeling as good as other days, but it was probably the nightmarish workplace. Plus, she was still sore from her attempted suicide. Most days, if you could call them that, she barely felt it but it was still there. Against herself, she was starting to enjoy her colleague’s company while avoiding work as much as possible. Still, what did her outtie ate? Her stomach wasn’t feeling that good.

First thing she did after greeting everyone was to go to the toilet. She was really uncomfortable. As she sat down, she found blood in her underwear and it scared her. What the fuck had happened to her outtie and why did she decide to come to work? Was she taking revenge on her actions? She noticed her underwear was actually covered by something. Her outtie had sticked something to the underwear to hold the blood. In the fear, she began feeling confusion. Again, it was like something she was supposed to know, like someone would have told her, like she would have experienced it and yet it wasn’t really there.

She decided to touch the wound. What a weird wound that kept on bleeding, no wonder it had to be covered. She noted her outtie shaved that part, she hadn’t really consider that all the other times she went to the toilet. Very carefully, still very scared and a bit ashamed, she kept looking for the wound without looking, just with the tips of her fingers. There was a hole. Quite a big hole and the blood apparently came from it. She didn’t dare to look and took her fingers out quickly. She was breathing agitatedly and couldn’t control it. Her fingers were covered in bright red blood. What the fuck did her outtie do?

She heard the door opening and heard a voice. “Everything okay?” It was Mark. “Eehmm… Give me a minute”. She didn’t know why but she was ashamed, what was she going to tell them? How could she explain it? And yet, she had to. Her outtie was taking revenge, there was no doubt. She left, washed her hands and tried to not look so scared. She didn’t succeed.

As she left, she told them: “I don’t know what she did, but she made me come to work bleeding”. The three of them were shocked! What? Where? “You look alright, where is the wound? What have you seen?” “She does look paler than usual”. “Here” she replied pointing at her vulva. “It doesn’t look like you are bleeding, it looks alright” Irv said. “But I am! She put some gauze or something there, that’s why it doesn’t come out”. “Let us see, maybe we can help you”.

She felt really embarrassed, and again she didn’t know why. Again the feeling like there was something she was supposed to know but she didn’t. But maybe they knew, maybe they also had had similar wounds, they had been here for longer. And if it was something they weren’t supposed to know, all the more important it was to share it! “Let’s go to the toilet”

“Yeah, alright I don’t look like that there” “Me neither” “Nor me”. And they showed her and now she was pissed off. Did her outtie cut that part and that was the reason it was bleeding? Was that even possible? Shouldn’t she be in the hospital? “Well, we don’t know the whole story, maybe Milchick can tell you something, it seems unlikely, but at the same time, you don’t look like we do. And it’s shaven too… Why would she do that if it weren’t for medical reasons?”

Helly was extremely angry by now but she couldn’t really do anything. Her energy fell low and she was tired and hungry. She was craving chips and there weren’t that many in the break room. There weren’t pills of any sort either, not that she actually knew what she needed for this. What if it got infected? It would eventually get full of blood and then what? Who was going to change it? The more she thought about, the angrier she was. She was going to find Milchick.

As she was about to storm the working station to go find him, he entered the room. Always cheerful, with that smile of his, to check on them. She hated him. Before he could say whatever it is he came to say, she stopped him and pushed him. “What did she do? Why didn’t you tell me?” He was confused and surprised and looked at the rest of the team for reference but they were of no help. “What? Who did what?” “She cut her member and now I’m bleeding” “What member?”

It took a while for Milchick to be able to calm Helly down enough so that he could actually explain. They usually had a video programmed, in accordance with their outties, to show when this event happened. She didn’t cut any body part at all, it was all a natural thing that happened to women. The confusion in the room was general and Milchick understood that, this time, he would have to play the video for the four of them, contrary to Lumon regulations.

The video, very colourful and child-like, looked a bit like a pixel videogame and explained what “menstruation” was and how did it affect team-members and their productivity. Apparently, they could be hungrier, more tired or more sensitive than usual for some time every month. As such, it was Lumon policy to allow them to take more breaks. Also, they would receive extra coins to get food from the machine. When the video was over, some things were clearer but many others weren’t, such as why did “menstruation” happen to some people only, or why did her team-members didn’t have a vulva.

Milchick didn’t reply to these questions but distracted them to show where in the bathroom were stocked the “menstrual pads”. Helly could take up to three every day for as long as she bleeded. “How long does this last?” “That, I cannot tell. Your outtie didn’t mention it and so we don’t have reference for it. It’s usually some days.” “Some days? A week is some days. A month is some days too. What did she tell you?” “Not much. She wasn’t comfortable discussing this. I’m sorry, but you have got to go back to work” He said with his cheerful smile, always kind.

The boys decided to let Helly R not work if she didn’t want to for as long as it lasted. None of them knew what questions to ask or how to deal with this. It was the first time either of them worked with a woman and so, they didn’t have reference from previous experiences. Helly was confused, sad and disappointed but she also didn’t feel like fighting.

The next day, she found herself carrying a bag. In the bag, there were some of those “menstrual pads”, some pills and some chocolate. Her outtie had compassion for her apparently, maybe Milchick had spoken to her after all. At her desk, there was a small piece of paper with the instruction “Take 1 pill per day while it lasts”.

Before she realized, she was back to normal, not bleeding anymore, not feeling tired or in pain. She almost forgot the whole thing, except that she kept checking her vulva to see how the wound evolved. The hole was still there, sometimes her outtie was clean shaven, sometimes it was itchy. Helly wondered what it would look like if not shaven, the boys had way more hair, maybe hers would be like that too. There were other things too, around the hole itself but, again, she felt like she should know what it was but was terribly embarrassed whenever she thought about it, terribly ashamed whenever she touched it. Little by little, she stopped investigating, and only wondered when would the next time be occasionally.
