idk how logical this would sound (probably not very, it’s past 1am here) but the reason i think jacques smokes is because esme doesn’t smoke

(or, accurately, to quote her from tss: “I love cigarettes, but I prefer to smoke them with a long holder because I don't like the smell or taste and because they're very bad for you.”)

was thinking of how DH associated wine with olaf a lot and for a moment it would seem like he wanted to associate villains with alcohol but also esme is noted to be drinking nonalcoholic aqueous martini in tee but then jacques is seen requesting a brandy in tua (btw bertrand also has a brandy bottle as mentioned in tbb) and i like the, esme, who handler portrayed as a villain, not being associated with the food/drink the other villains (olaf) is associated with, in which case alcohol, but jacques on the other hand is, albeit a different kind. and then thinking about how the sinister duo offered her a cigarette and said she’d probably enjoy it, but then she said does love that it’s in, so that’s why she still smokes it but usually holds it at a distance because she doesn’t like the smell or taste and thinks it’s bad.

in the case of cigarettes here it’s also seen associated with other villains (the sinister duo) (if we want to count sir then that’s another one) but not with esme (although in this case the cigarettes are in, unlike alcohol which wasn’t in) so my mind somehow just went like, following some kind of implicit logic my mind just keep telling me that: hmmm jacques probably smokes, this makes a certain parallel somewhere

jacques vs esme is always very interesting to me like, not just those above things but also the fact that jacques tried to warn jerome from esme, tried to stop him marrying her, vs esme successfully married jerome, even if she didn’t love him. and also the fact that jacques canonically held the position of daily punctilio’s editor, and admittedly people trying to convince eleanora poe about what’s “in” at the moment implying daily punctilio gets a lot of say in what’s “in” is just netflix!canon, but if we go with that the fashion editor of DP definitely got quite some influences on that, and considering how much esme was obsessed with fashion and being in, that’s just, very interesting all around.

and also the animosity esme had for jacques ....

anyway i love their dynamics it’s fascinating. like it’s not a romance nor a friendship i just like them being enemies and competing over the same thing and both fashionable in their own way and detesting the other’s fashion at the same time and also esme married the love of jacques’ life, probably
