Today was better. I felt like I did more with my time. But I had a lot of moments this morning when I just wished it was over. That the day was done. I hate that I have been feeling that way. Its not a fun feeling.
I had a lot of trouble fall asleep. But once I did it was a good rest. I woke up around 930 and felt alright. James made me an egg sandwich. I felt cute. But it was very hot. I just want it to be fall. I am bored with the heat and it makes me feel bad. Plus a storm was coming in and it was sort of humid. Which is just annoying. Like just storm??
But I tried my best to not be directionless. I did the styling I had to do. And had breakfast and looked at the dumb youtube news I like. But I felt like I should go do something. But I didn't need to so I was feeling weird.
Finally I was like I am just going to go for a drive. I brought my scooter incase I ended up at a park. But what actually happened was I drove. For a while. I got to the 695 junction and instead of getting on I took the exit to the left towards Pikesville. And I decided to just drive straight until the end. See where that took me.
Well the answer is Pennsylvania. I took falls road about 30 miles, through suburbs to farms, until the road was basically dirt? And I had no service. It was honestly a really nice drive. I enjoyed my music and the scenary and it helped me feel a little better.
Once I had to turn I asked google to take me to the closest goodwill. And it was honestly a great one. It was small but it was clean and well stocked. I ended up finding this beautiful picnic basket that has its original (racist Native American) sticker on the inside. So you know its vintage. Very well made. I also ran into Wendy from camp?? Turns out she lives in the area. She was baffled as to why I was out there and despite me saying I had just ben taking a drive she was like. Are you practicing a commute? And Im like no just taking a drive.
I got a few little things. Had a laugh with the cashieer because I didn't know what state I was in. And then I was off.
I headed towards the highway, no reason to take the same way home. I was actually not super far from camp. Though I did get to see a restaurant called The Mason Dixon Family Diner. Which made me laugh.
I ended up going to Hunt Valley and having soup at Panera Bread. The casheier was complimenting me on my whole vibe and my nails and made me feel very cute. I enjoyed my soup and listened to a movie podcast. And then walked around for a bit. I went to the Burlington and then the marshals. I got a lotion that is whipped. Which feel so strange! But I like so far. Smells like peaches.
I headed home after that. Got a good parking spot. And felt a lot bettter.
I would do a little cleaning. I pulled all the camping stuff into the livingroom so I could organize the engagement party stuff. The room was pretty full with everything out. Wish stressed me out. It was getting to hot but I was glad to have some space again. I was able to work on my sewing machine and make a specail bear for a friend. I tried stuffing it with scrap fabric because Im out of cotton and I think it could work. Well see for future bears.
I spent a lot of time printing and I tried to fix the bat print again. Still unsure about it but I can use hot glue to fix them a little so that's good to know. I did my prints and then hun g out o the couch and ate cheese and crackers and tried to just have a chill night.
James is playing dnd. And I took a nice shower. Im in the ac now which feels nice. I wish it would get cold out quicker.
Let's hope I feel productive all day tomorrow and not so directionless.

Chapter 4
Description: You accompany your friends on a day trip to Animal Kingdom Theme Park where you meet Scott Evans by chance. This one afternoon leads to a year long friendship with both Chris and Scott over text messages and phone calls.
Pairing: Chris Evans x Reader
Warning: Cursing, drinking, and drunk texting.
A/N: Italics are internal thoughts.
Chapter 3
“Where do you want to eat?” Brooks asked once the two of you reached a strip of fast food and casual eateries.
Both of you left the office in search of a late lunch. In actuality, Brooks surprised you in the parking lot when you pulled in. You had just eaten breakfast two hours prior, but hey, if he was paying, you were going.
“Champs is always good,” you said.
Brooks hummed in reply, but kept walking past the entrance, leaving you standing there puzzled.
“Okaaaaay,” you said as you jogged to catch up. “What’s up with you?”
“Nothing,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders.
“Okay. Sure. We’ll go with that,” you replied.
When you passed the fifth restaurant, you quickly walked ahead, grabbing the door for Panera Bread and holding it open for him. “In! Now!”
He chucked, shook his head, and walked in, you following behind.
With a large, apple and chicken salad in front of you, as well as large hunk of bread, you decided to let the two of you eat in peace before the interrogation began.
“Do you really need three packets of butter for that piece of bread?” he questioned.
You pointed the plastic butter knife at him. “It’s rude to talk with your mouth full. And yes, this is a lot of bread, so it deserves a proportionate amount of butter. Bread and butter give me life. Don’t hate,” you replied, tearing a chunk off.
He closed his mouth, chewing a large bite of his sandwich but giving you a large closed lipped smile.
After your stomach was overstuffed by the bread you insisted on eating, you took a large sip of water, eyeing Brooks who now had his phone in hand.
“You and Jana are too much alike. Always so serious on your damn phones,” you said. Pushing your cup away because you were just too full for even water.
“One to talk. I hear you are mighty chatty with those…Evans guys,” he whispers at the end causing you to roll your eyes.
“They’re both friends,” you reply, shrugging your shoulders.
“Not with Chris from what I hear,” he said, the smugness thick.
You bite out a laugh. “From what you hear. You mean Jana? That’s your big scoop? You’re such a punk.”
“I’m just sayin’ that it all sounds flirty to me.”
“Remind me to not tell Jana anything anymore,” you said.
He gives you a half smile, but says nothing else.
“It’s not like that. He’s Brish Mevins.” Brooks chuckles at the fake name you gave Chris. “Have you seen the girls he’s dated?”
Brooks shakes his head no, but picks up his phone and starts typing away. You put your hand over it, forcing it down.
“Neither have I, and I want to keep it that way. But I’m sure they’re gorgeous and probably all actresses. Besides, sometimes people just flirt. I do it too. It’s fun,” you replied.
“Think what you will, but be open to it,” Brooks says, taking his finger and tapping your nose.
“Dorks. That’s the only types of people I know.” Brooks scrunches up his face and gives you a smile. “Any way. Tell me what’s up and don’t say it’s nothing.”
He lets out a long breath but sits up straighter, his face instantly changing to one that’s excited. “I got a job offer,” he exclaims.
“A different one at the paper?” you asked.
He shakes his head no. “It’s with an online news organization. It’s still a sales position, but it’s better pay and I can work from anywhere.”
“Don’t leave me there by myself,” you pout. “You can’t buy me lunch if you’re at home.” Bottom lip sticking out.
“You’re hardly there by yourself. How often have I come to your desk and your busy chatting with the women around you?” he asked.
While you are extremely happy for your friend, damn, are you going to miss seeing him every day.
“Not the same.” You take a big breath in. “But I want the best for you. So, if you’re happy, I’ll be happy. The Cole family is certainly moving up. You with this new job and Jana making partner.”
Brooks throws a hand up. “Don’t jinx it. Nothing’s been announced yet.”
You copy his stance, adding your second hand in. “Fine. Fine. But it’s going to happen.”
It’s media day at Walt Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The second attraction, Rise of the Resistance in Galaxy’s Edge is opening and you are quite excited. You hadn’t always loved the Star Wars franchise, not getting into the movies until your early twenties thanks to an old boyfriend who was pretty obsessed. This ride is supposed to be a huge deal and with very little revealed to the public thus far, you’re stoked.
There’s a big presentation by CEO Robert Iger with some surprise guests. Storm Troopers are roaming the currently empty stage while various members of the media prepare to go live once the presentation starts. A borrowed camera with a zoom lens from the paper rests in your hand. You also have your digital voice recorder ready to go. It would be easier to film the event and take stills from the video, but with a good number of YouTubers making up the event, you can always catch what you missed later that night.
Robert Iger walks on the stage while small pyrotechnics fire off from the back. Cheers all around. The buzz in the air is catchy and you find yourself fangirling more than anything. The special guests end up being Daisy Ridley and John Boyega as both actors play a part in the ride.
You’re given a return time to ride the attraction that day. Seeing that you have about an hour until your time slot, you peruse the shops selling various themed wares. Even the bottles of Coke products are themed to match the land. You purchase an orbed shape bottle of Sprite and snap a selfie sending it off to Scott.
Scott: Sprite? You’re in Star Wars land and you get soda. Where’s the blue milk?
You laugh at his reply.
Y/N: Star Wars land? It’s called Galaxy’s Edge Grumpy.
Y/N: Have you tried the blue milk? I’ll stick with the pop thank you very much.
Scott: Pop?! What the fuck is pop?
Scott: How long have you lived in Florida. The word you’re looking for is soda.
Y/N: Whatever 🙄
You snuck a selfie with a Storm Trooper and sent it to Chris. A few minutes later he was calling you.
“Hey babe,” you answered.
Yeah, your friendship had taken on another nickname. He called you sweetheart and you called him babe. The first time you said it to him you cringed. Like full body folded in half while you waited for a reaction. You didn’t mean to say it, but Chris took to calling you almost daily. He had a long break in his schedule and you had become part of his day. One day the word just slipped out. It felt natural. When he went on as if nothing happened, you relaxed. The nickname slipped out more and more as if that were his name.
“You’re killing me sweetheart! Are you there for the paper?” he asked.
“Yeah. Story will post tomorrow if you want to read it. I’m about to go on Rise of the Resistance in a few minutes.”
“Of course, I want to read it. Send me the link tomorrow. Gah! I’m jealous,” he whined.
You let out a giggle. “Get your butt to Orlando then. If you can’t swing the cost of a hotel, you can stay with me,” you replied.
“Uh-huh, okay, Sassy. I’ll let you know. Go enjoy your day smartass,” he said.
“You wouldn’t put up with me if you didn’t like it,” you teased.
“Need to stop talking to Scott. Apparently, he’s a bad influence on you,” Chris said.
“Oh, I don’t doubt that. But I’m going to head over to the line. I’ll call you later babe,” you said.
“Sounds good sweetheart. Bye,” Chris said ending the call.
Rise of the Resistance was not only visually stunning, but action packed. There were so many details that no doubt you could ride ten additional times and still not catch them all. The Sentinel was lucky to have a Disney enthusiast such as yourself on staff. Whenever there was a Disney Parks story needed, they knew yours would trump the competition. While you knew you were good at your job, you were also your worst critic and struggled to really put yourself out there. This is why you mainly worked on assignment with only writing a story of your choosing from time to time.
On your way out of the park, you purchased a Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar. You took a bite out of one of the ears and snapped a selfie. The picture was quickly sent to Chris since he asked you to mail one to him a month again.
Y/N: I was going to mail this but he just looked so damn tempting.
Chris: I may not talk to you for a while. I think you understand why.
Y/N: I refuse to believe that. I’ll call you later.
Chris: We’ll see
What a baby.
It was Christmas Eve and you were freezing cold in your mom’s house. The heat was on, but she liked to keep the thermostat set to sixty eight to keep the gas bill low. Living in Florida for fifteen years had thinned your blood. The one positive about being back in Minnesota in the winter besides seeing your family, were the cute winter clothes you could wear again. Despite the warmer temperatures all year round in Central Florida, clothing stores still sold tall boots and thick sweaters.
Dressed in a large cream cowl neck sweater, dark blue jeans, and fuzzy red and white stripped socks, you were still freezing. You pulled the green throw blanket up to your neck, wishing someone would hold your mug of hot cocoa spiked with Baileys up to your lips so you wouldn’t have to remove your hands from under your blanket.
“When did you turn into such a baby?” Heath, your younger brother asked.
Like a true baby, you stuck your tongue out at him. He smirked but shook his head at you before sitting down next to you on the couch. Your mom and her sisters are in the kitchen, fussing with dinner, but mostly drinking wine. The “kids” who are all in their late twenties and thirties include your cousins Jenny, Rebecca, Tony, and Nick and his wife Avery, as well as yourself and Heath.
You brother reaches forward and grabs your mug off the coffee table, taking a sip before passing it to you.
“This is weak,” he said.
“Not all of us need a splash of cocoa in our Baileys,” you replied.
“When’s the last time we all got drunk together?” Jenny asked.
“Not since Nick’s wedding and that was like ten years ago,” Rebecca replies.
“Count us out, we got the kids watching TV in basement and need to get home tonight,” Avery said.
Nick frowns causing you to chuckle.
“I’m game, but I don’t want to get Baileys drunk. What else do we have?” you asked.
Heath got up and walked into the kitchen, politely smiling at your mother before opening a cabinet. It was taking some effort as he was trying to reach the back of the cupboard. A few seconds later he walked back into the living room with his hands behind his back. Like a magician unveiling his trick, he pulls the bottle from behind his back.
The group of you oohs at the green bottle of Jägermeister.
“We’re going to be so sick,” Rebecca said.
“On Christmas,” you add. “Why does mom have a bottle of Jägermeister?
Fuck. Mom is going to be so mad at us.
“It’s mine from like five years ago. I left it here and forgot all about it,” Heath chuckles.
“Do we have shot glasses?” Jenny asked.
“Doubt it,” Heath said.
“But we do have Dixie cups in the bathroom.” Tony said, getting up from his seat and moving into the bathroom.
Heath grabbed his phone and hit play on his nineties music playlist. It may be Christmas Eve, but this was really a get together with your family since you mainly only came home once a year. Even then, not everyone was able to get together every year.
With your first shot in hand, you snap a selfie. Best to do it now before I start to get sloppy.
Downing the shot with your brother and cousins, you grab your phone to fire off a text, attaching the picture to send Chris and then to Scott.
Y/N: Cheers to a Merry Christmas
Scott’s the first to reply as you finish your second shot.
Scott: Someone’s getting holly and jolly
You giggled at that causing your family to all send you a questioning look.
“These shots are already going straight to my head,” you said quickly.
“Drinking game!” Heath shouts. “Since we know the Christmas Story is on TV, anytime someone says Ralphie, we drink.”
“We are so getting wasted tonight,” Tony said.
“Mom,” you called out. She walked from the kitchen into the living room where you all were. “I think everyone but Nick and Avery are staying over.”
“You kids,” she sighs as she shakes her head walking away.
Your phone buzzed in your hand. Chris had responded to your text.
Chris: God you’re adorable.
Butterflies swarmed in your stomach with heat instantly rising to your cheeks. You hoped the alcohol you consumed was a good enough cover for the redness you were no doubt showing.
Your phone started to buzz in your hand repeatedly. You were so lost in your thoughts, you almost missed the call entirely.
“Hello?” you answered.
“Merry Christmas sweetheart.” Chris said. His voice was a little rough, making you shiver.
“Hi Ba-Chris,” you said, almost slipping out the nickname in front of your family. Getting up quickly, you moved to your old bedroom for privacy.
“How’s your Christmas so far?” he asked.
“Really good. It’s like the first Christmas in maybe five years where all my cousins on my mom’s side could come,” you said. “We’re having a really good time.”
He chuckled. “I can see that. How many paper cups of alcohol have you had?”
“Only two. Probably a lot more to come,” you replied. “Besides, it’s warming me up. It’s like I get amnesia about the weather.”
“I bet. Too much sunshine. It’s cold here too,” Chris said.
“Are you and Scott in Boston?” you asked.
“Yep, for like the last week. Probably be here another couple of weeks. You should come to Boston,”
What?
You cleared your throat. “Like now?” you asked.
Chris chuckled again. Damn, if that laugh didn’t get you every time.
“Like in general.” He pauses for a moment. “You should come out sometime. Scott’s here a lot. I’m here a lot. It would be fun. Give ya the whole New England experience,” he said.
“You know, it’s cold in Massachusetts,” you chuckled out.
“It’s a good thing you look so cute in sweaters,” he said, seriousness in his voice.
Okay fine. I like Chris. I like him, like him. Fuck.
You’re rendered speechless. Yes, he’s flirty every once in a while, via text message, but hearing it over the phone is something else. It’s almost not fair that he can say those things but be a thousand miles away most days.
“Hello? Did I lose you sweetheart?” Chris asked.
“Sor…sorry. Yeah, I’ll think about it,” you stammered.
“Come in the fall. It’s beautiful in the fall and not too cold for you.”
“Okay. Yeah. We’ll work it out,” you replied.
“I’m holding you to it.” Chris said.
“Y/N? Where’d you go?” Rebecca called from the other room.
“Hey, Chris. I’m being summoned in the next room. M’sure I’m a few drinks behind by now,” you replied.
“Okay, sweetheart. Go have fun with your family,” he said.
“You too, babe. Merry Christmas,”
“Merry Christmas,” he replied.
You were indeed late to the party as everyone was plenty tipsy by the time you walked back into the living room. Tony handing you a full paper cup before you could even sit down.
An hour later you had given up on drinking. You were at the point where you were just tipsy enough with zero percent chance of getting sick and that was plenty. You had a feeling your mom would be waking everyone up bright and early tomorrow.
You picked up your phone and sent Chris a text. Because having your phone while drunk was a great idea.
Y/N: We all want something beautiful
Man, I wish I was beautiful
The two of you had a habit of sending song lyrics back and forth to each other. Since the nineties station was still playing on Heath’s phone, Mr. Jones seemed appropriate. And maybe the booze made you brave since the words had hidden meaning to your crush on Chris.
Chris: A little Counting Crows on Christmas?
Y/N: Why not? Sometimes Christmas makes you nostalgic for the 90s.
“One more shot. Come on. Just one more. You’re never home to get drunk with me anymore.” Heath sniggered.
“You are a bad influence on me,” you teased, poking him in his chest. “Fine. One more and that’s it.”
One more turned into three more and you were suddenly sloppy drunk. You said goodnight to everyone, after throwing them extra blankets and pillows you scrounged up from your bedroom.
Alone in your room, you couldn’t get your mind off of Chris. After calling you cute and inviting you to Boston, not to mention the flirty texts, it was all too much.
Y/N: I think yur so cutte
Y/N: so nice n sweet
Y/N: just derseve everything you evr want
Y/N: wish yo not so far away
Predictive text doesn’t catch everything apparently, but you’re pretty sure he would get what you were saying. Before you could type another devotion to Chris, your phone rang, causing you to drop it on your head.
“Motherfucker!” you exclaimed, rubbing your aching head.
The phone continued to ring regardless of your pain.
“Hello?” you groaned.
“So, I’m going to take a shot in the dark here and say that you are trying to text my brother.” Scott said.
“Scott! Hi! I miss you!”
He chuckled. “Yeah, Yeah. Miss you too Sassy. Sounds like someone’s a little drunk.”
You giggled. “You’re a little drunk!”
“Oh my god. I should be recording this call.” He murmured.
You laughed because that’s what you did when you drank. You weren’t sure why you were laughing, but Scott always put you in a good mood.
“Anyway. I’m going to call you tomorrow because you probably won’t remember this. I need you to put your phone away and go to sleep. Those text messages you thought you were sending to Chris, you actually sent to me,” he said.
You frowned, sticking out your bottom lip. “Can you show Chris? He needs to know,” you whined.
“We’ll talk about it tomorrow sweetie. Now get some rest. Goodnight,” Scott said.
“Night Scott.”
The next morning you groaned to the sounds of your mother banging pots and pans. You were pretty sure she was doing it on purpose. With every bang, it felt like your head was going to crack open. Taking a pillow from under your head, you put it over your face and prayed that you could fall back to sleep. But then you remembered something about telling Chris he was cute.
Oh no! He’s going to think I’m some sad, desperate girl.
You grabbed your phone, praying Chris didn’t reply. Maybe he’d ignore it and save you the embarrassment. But then you remembered Scott calling you.
“Thank god for Scott,” you mumbled.
Typing out a quick reply to Scott since he would now be considered your saving grace.
Y/N: Thank you for saving me from myself.
Scott: No problem Sassy. How are you feeling?
Y/N: Like death. Not drinking again, probably for years.
Scott: So dramatic.
Y/N: Merry Christmas Grumpy.
Scott: Merry Christmas Sassy.
You plugged your nearly dead phone in to charge and regrettably got out of bed since your mom continued to make way too much noise at nine in the morning. You took a shower, hoping it would make you feel more alive. Sadly, it did not.
After eating breakfast which consisted of pancakes since your mom took a little mercy on you, you crawled back into bed. Christmas dinner was being served at five, so you grabbed your phone to set an alarm for an or two, because you knew you would over sleep. As soon as you picked it up, you saw you had a text from Chris.
Chris: Merry Christmas sweetheart.
Chris Evans was going to be the death of you.

- Will leave his manager swipe card in random places and doesn’t care if you use it as long as you let him know
- Jokes with Changbin about making sure the bread looks good and talks with him about how terrible another Panera in the area is
- Don’t let him cook the bacon, he will burn it
- When he’s in a really good mood, he’ll give the cashiers a free meal instead of just their discount
Woojin - Line Trainer
- When it’s slow he’ll stand behind a cashier taking an order so he can start making the food early
- Despises people who change almost every part of their sandwich
- Always forgets he’s wearing gloves, so when he high fives someone he immediately groans and goes to change his gloves
- Is so thankful that Seungmin was a fast learner
- Always cleans thoroughly and finishes early
- Quotes the Panera Bathroom Video™️ every once in a while
- “Oh hey, didn’t see ya there.”
Minho - Delivery
- “I’m telling you, this uniform’s orange is not my color.”
- Does the dishes anytime there’s no delivery orders placed
- Really big help with dining, but also loves standing in the back of the house and chatting
- Shows off his cats at any chance he gets
- Makes the most specific coffee every time he’s working
- Has tried every food item on the menu and gets excited when there’s a new seasonal item
Changbin - Night Baker
- As soon as he comes in, he makes a cup of coffee
- Always jokes about dealing coke since he gets flour all over his black clothes
- Blasts his music from the bakery station and makes cash nervous that there’s swears because the costumers ordering might hear
- Snags a bagel every once in a while
- His orders are changed up a bit, but the line doesn’t mind since he works with them and he’s chill
- Swipes his MyPanera card every time despite knowing he can’t use the rewards with his discount
- Always tries to get something under $10 so he doesn’t have to pay
Hyunjin - Drive Thru
- Plays music through the headsets that him and Felix dance to
- Has once had a box of chips fall on him when he was trying to grab a bag
- Has accidentally called a male customer “Ma’am” and apologized profusely
- Talks with Minho and Chan often
- Offers to grab people snacks on his break
- Makes sure everyone is ready to leave and with them as they go, so nobody walks alone at night
- “Do you want a strawberry lemonade? I made too many”
Jisung - Cash/Dining
- Loves when a cookie breaks because that means he can have it
- Prefers working cash because closing bakery isn’t too stressful
- Has to ask Hyunjin to change the signs to breakfast for him at the end of the night because he’s too short
- Will give nice customers the best looking pastry when they order one
- Snags one of the drive through headsets so he can listen to the music and talk with them from the bakery
- Hands out the chocolate chip cookies to coworkers after they’ve past their time on the warmers
- Always saves Felix his chocolate croissant and draws on the bag
Felix - Drive Thru
- Dances all the time to the music blasting
- Sometimes forgets when his headset is set to speaking at the speaker vs just to each other
- Loves exaggerating his accent and phrases to get a good laugh
- Sings to the music as well
- Dangerous around the barista station, he likes smacking the bags of caramel
- Always has a chocolate croissant with his name on it and if they run out before he gets there he becomes pouty
- Makes his nametag have the most wacky shit on it like “super bread” with a drawing
Seungmin - Line
- “DO NOT ORDER FROM PANERA BREAD IF YOU HAVE A GLUTEN ALLERGY!”
- Lowkey everyone flirts with him
- No one knows why
- They just do
- Sometimes is more responsible than the managers
- The way he tears the bread for sides both concerns and turns on everyone
- When he overheard cash ask if a person wants their bagel sliced and toasted, he knows they really don’t want to slice it themselves
- The cutest ever though, like he helps cash with the bread count if one of them is confused on the bread type they’re looking at
- Doesn’t like cooking eggs during breakfast hours
Jeongin - Cash/Dining
- Prefers dining because he doesn’t have to talk to people and he can listen to music
- Considers the vacuum as his baby
- If you leave behind your dirty dishes on a table instead of putting them in the specific dishes area, he will loathe you
- Impressed everyone when he’s cleaning the bubblers because he carries those tubs of drinks so easily and looks cool when he props it on his shoulder to pour it into the bubblers
- As soon as he comes in for the closing shift on Wednesdays, he starts brewing decaf for the church group that comes in
- Is scared for his life every time he has to clean the lady’s room

Every Dine-Out Meal of May 2018, Ranked
I ranked the following based on taste alone. I made no consideration for ambiance or the general dining experience or whatever. I included meals I got to go. I included food trucks, and I included fast food. Here’s how it all shook out. Should you be interested in the pictures or reading the few words I had to say about each meal, click on the home page and scroll down or see the archives.
Lots of good Asian food this month, but top honors to a new pizza place. Also, best salad I’ve had in a while. Top nine were really good.
Greek Salad & Hawaiian Pizza. SQZBX Brewery & Pizza Joint. Hot Springs, Arkansas. 5.1.2018.
Some kind of eel specialty roll w/Seaweed Salad. Sushi Café (West). Little Rock, Arkansas. 5.7.2018.

The Golden Rose (Chapter 6)
Lauren hated Tuesdays for many reasons. They were just a second Monday. For awhile, Tuesdays became Lauren’s favorite day because it was the only day she could spend alone with Lucy. Lucy would always pick up a pizza and they would watch Beauty and The Beast while cuddled up with each other. Only once or twice did they ever watch a different movie, but they always ended up changing it to Beauty and The Beast before the night ended. It was their movie.
A few months prior to Lucy’s passing, their movie nights became fewer and farther between until they eventually stopped. Still, Lauren continued watching in the movie in hope that Lucy would end up coming. Only once did Lauren not watch that movie on a Tuesday and that was the night of Lucy’s death.
On this particular Tuesday, Lauren made it a movie marathon. She felt physically and emotionally sick to do anything, but lay up on the couch. The teacher inside of her wanted to go and do her job, especially as this was only the third day with her class, but she knew she wasn’t stable enough to deal with them. Even her roommates agreed she shouldn’t go in.
Lauren wrapped her blue plaid blanket tightly around her cold body and leaned her head back against the couch cushion. She closed her eyes tightly as she tried to get through the pain from her pounding headache. The didn’t fully go away, but it eased up a bit in time for her favorite scene.
“There never was a story of more woe, then this of Juillet and her Romeo.”
“Could you read it again?”
“Well here, why don’t you read it to me?”
“U-u-uh, Alright… Hmph… em… I-I can’t…”
“You mean you never learned?”
“I learned… a little… it’s just been SO long…”
“Well here I’ll help you! Let’s start here.”
“Here… hmph… ‘kay… "twoh”…“
"Two.”
“Oh, two… I knew that…”
As the scene ended, a loud knock came from the front door. The door slowly started to creak open before Lauren could get up from the couch.
“Lauren,” Camila’s soft voice sang as she slowly walked into the apartment with a bag full of food.
“Hi,” Lauren said as Camila shut the door behind her.
“Dinah said you didn’t come in because you weren’t feeling well, so I decided to come over and check on you.”
“You didn’t have to,” Lauren said as she got up from her spot and walked over to the kitchen.
“I know, but I want too. I stopped at Panera on the way here and grabbed an assortment of things,” Camila said as she pulled out a bowl of mac and cheese and chicken noodle soup, two turkey sandwiches, and two flower cookies. “Dinah didn’t go into what type of sickness you had so I grabbed some of my favorites."
"Thank you, Mila,” Lauren smiled brightly, no one had ever came to check on her before, and to add food to equation it was like a dream.
“Are you feeling okay? Do you have a temperature? Stomachache?”
“I’m fine,” Lauren assured. “A bit of a headache from stress and other things,” she went on, not going into too much details.
“I couldn’t find any of the craft supplies needed for the craft today so the kids and I decided to do something else with our time,” Camila said as she handed Lauren a stack of get well cards.
Lauren smiled down at the first card. On the top half it said, “Ms Larn” with a heart around it, and on the bottom half was her and the student holding hands at what looked like the school playground.
“This is the best gift ever,” Lauren thanked as she placed the cards on the table, making a mental note to read the rest of them after she finished lunch.
“I thought you would like it,” Camila laughed as she took the lid off the mac and cheese. “Do you have any forks?”
“In the drawer to the left of the oven,” Lauren said before walked over and grabbed some utensils for the both of them.
“Is that Beauty and The Beast?” Camila questioned as she placed the utensils down on the counter.
“Yeah,” Lauren answered as she looked back at the screen.
“That’s one of my favorite Disney movies. Mind if I watch?”
“No, make yourself at home,” Lauren said as Camila walked over to the couch. Lauren grabbed two juice boxes from the fridge and one of the turkey sandwiches before plopping herself down on the couch next to Camila.
“When I was younger I used to think I was Belle,” Camila shared as Lauren restarted the movie from the beginning. “I used to sing the opening song all the time and run around my house like it was my village.”
“Aww,” Lauren cooed. “You kinda look like Belle with your big brown eyes and wavy brown eyes.”
“Plus I love to read and I’ll practically do anything for my family. We are literally the same person.”
“You never mentioned you liked to read,” Lauren said before taking a bite of her sandwich.
“I love to read. I’ve probably read every book out there.”
Lauren swallowed the piece of food in her mouth before continuing the conversation. “What’s your favorite book?”
“I don’t have a favorite book. I love all of them, well most of them. I really enjoy the Harry Potter series.”
“I’ve finished half of the first book. The movies are really good though.”
“Fake,” Camila drawled out as she carefully nudged the green-eyed girl.
“Well if you’re really like Belle then you should read to me.”
“You can read.”
“I rather you read to me.”
“Maybe I could read a chapter and then you could read a chapter,” Camila suggested. Although Lauren wanted to hear Camila’s voice nonstop she decided it would only be fair.
“Fine.”
“I can bring over the first book then time we hang out if you want. I have majority of them.”
“Majority?”
“Yeah,” Camila answered. “My dog got into my room a few years ago and got ahold of the book sitting on my bed. It was the third book, my favorite book, so I was pretty devastated when it happened. I’ve always wanted to get a new one but always forgot.”
“I’ll get it for you,” Lauren replied as she grabbed her phone off the coffee table.
“No Lauren, you don’t have to. It’s okay.”
“What’s the third book called?” Lauren asked, knowing none of the names from the Harry Potter series.
“Lauren, really it’s okay,” Camila said, trying to stop the green-eyed girl from ordering the book.
Lauren ignored Camila and went online to find out the name of the third book. Once she found the name, she copied and pasted it into the Amazon app. It immediately popped up and Lauren bought it within two minutes.
“It will be here Wednesday,” Lauren happily said as she shut off her phone and dropped it beside her.
“Lauren.”
“Camila.”
“You didn’t have to do that.
"And you didn’t have to take care of me and make dinner on Friday, then buy me breakfast on Saturday. You also bought me coffee yesterday and came over today to bring me lunch. You’ve done more than enough for me and I want to return the favor.”
“Thank you,” Camila said, accepting the gift.
“I expect you to read it to me.”
“I will,” Camila nodded.
The two became quiet and finished the rest of their lunch. They moved all their empty containers onto the coffee table and Camila laid down on the couch, using Lauren’s lap as a pillow. Lauren ran her fingers through Camila’s wavy hair and moved her eyes from Camila’s side profile to the TV and then back to her side profile. Everything inside of her was warm and fuzzy. This was the first Tuesday in awhile that Lauren actually enjoyed.
As the movie ended, all her roommates crowded into the living room and made small comments about the two girls laid up on the couch. Lauren glared at all them while Camila stayed oblivious to them all.
Lauren soon got tired of all the comments and led Camila back into her bed, which of course resulted in more comments from her roommates.
“I like your room,” Camila said as she looked around the poster covered room.
“It’s small,” Lauren stated as she walked across her clothes covered floor and hoped onto her twin sized bed.
“It’s cute,” Camila commented as she walked over to Lauren’s bed. “Who do you bunk with?”
“Mani,” Lauren answered. “Majority of these clothes come from her. I’ve tried to tell her over and over again to pick them up, but she never listens.”
“I can’t say much,” Camila laughed. Her floors were worse than Normani and Lauren’s floors.
“I originally had plans on moving in with Lucy, but then everything happened and it never became a reality.
"You could move in with me. Diane is never there because she practically lives with her boyfriend. I could use the company.”
“I wish,” Lauren laughed. “This place was not made for five people. It’s barely suitable for two.”
“I rather live in a smaller place and have fun then living in a bigger place with no one around. It gets lonely.”
“You’re welcome here anytime. However, know it can get crazy and loud around here. Especially during our planning nights,” Lauren warned.
“You guys have planning nights?”
“We have to or else nothing would get done. They’re supposed to a few hours of quiet a week so everyone can focus on getting things done, but it’s usually a night filled with people stressed out because things aren’t getting done or going right.”
“I want to experience one of those.”
“We’re having one Saturday afternoon. Maybe you could come over and help me plan somethings. Then we can go explore Denver for a little.”
“I’ll mark it on my calendar.”
“Nerd,” Lauren playfully teased.
“That’s definitely me,” Camila nodded as she entered the information into the calendar on her phone.
“I love how you just embrace it.”
“I have to,” Camila shrugged as she slipped her phone back into her pocket. “I went to science camp every year for six years.”
“I wish I would’ve known you in my grade school days. I tried so hard to be someone I’m not because I didn’t want to be put into the nerd category. I was a people pleaser, but once I graduated I never saw any of those people again. I wish I would’ve stayed myself, but after pretending for so long I’m still trying to figure myself out. Lucy helped a little, but I’m still lost.”
“Tell me more about Lucy,” Camila hummed as she laid down on Lauren like she did on the couch.
“Uh, what do you want to know?” Lauren asked, becoming awkward. She hardly talked about Lucy to anybody, even those that knew her. She was always such an awkward subject to talk about even before she passed.
“I don’t know. I always hear people talking about Lucy around school and I feel so out of the loop.”
“What have you heard?” Lauren asked as she tried to get a sense of what Camila wanted to know.
“I heard she used to teach in the PreK class before they got rid of it and that you and her were in some type of on again, off again type of relationship. At least that’s what Diane said. She also told me she passed away over the summer in a car accident, and that’s about it. I want to hear about Lucy as a person instead of her death or her job. I’m sure there’s so much more to her.”
“There is,” Lauren nodded. “She was a unique one to say the least. When she was teaching she was the sweetest, down to earth person you would’ve ever met. To outsiders you would’ve thought she’d go home and read a book and watch the news before crawling into bed at ten. When she wasn’t in her teaching role then she was usually out party or exploring a new town. She loved art and photography and literature. She was like the typical bad girl you’d read in a story.”
“She sounds interesting,” Camila smiled up at Lauren.
“She was something,” Lauren laughed lightly before biting her bottom lip.
“Did you love her?”
Lauren froze at that question. Did she love her? They threw the word out a few times here and there, but it always sounded so painful and awkward. She definitely had strong feels for her, but didn’t know if it was love, or maybe it was. It was feeling she never had experience with.
“I don’t know. Maybe. I don’t know what love is supposed to feel like.”
“I’ve never been in love before but I can’t wait to feel like the characters in books do. It sounds amazing.”
“Whoever you love is one lucky person.”
“What makes you say that?”
“You’ll give them your full time and attention and make sure they’re loved and appreciated everyday. I hope I can find someone like you.”
“Yeah,” Camila said becoming quiet.
“Is everything okay?” Lauren asked, becoming nervous that she said something wrong.
“Everything is fine,” Camila said as she grabbed Lauren’s hand and placed I on her head. “I want you to play with my hair though, and to tell me more about yourself.”
“Of course,” Lauren happily agreed as she ran her hand through Camila’s hair while she went into a story about her bossing the neighbors around when she was younger.
— Hi guys!
As always don’t forget to tell me what you think. I hope you all have a fantastic day/night!

Growing Global
JAB is buying Pret from the Bridgepoint equity firm and its majority owner and minor shareholders. The U.K.-headquartered Pret not only is rapidly growing its U.S. presence—where it currently operates 92 stores—but it also has outlets in Hong Kong, China and France for a total of 530 stores worldwide.

The brand tries to differentiate itself as healthier, including a menu that includes colorful salads, “protein pots” and beetroot hummus; outfitting each store with its own on-site kitchen to boost freshness and local sourcing; and experiments such as its vegetarian stores in the U.K.

McDonald’s bought a 33% stake in Pret in 2001, but Pret’s ensuing rapid international expansion overextended the company financially. Amid Pret’s retrenchment, McDonald’s sold its stake to Bridgepoint in 2008.

Pret logged 10 straight years of sales and earnings growth and nine straight years of like-for-like sales growth under Bridgepoint. “The brand continues to thrive around the world,” Schlee said, “thanks to our simple recipe of freshly prepared food, served by genuinely engaged teams.”

main points:
- woke up to shovel snow
- toaster strudel breakfast
- one punch man episode binge through the rest of season 1 / talk to mudit about CS career stuff
- clean up phone photo files
- smash tourney! i showed up on stream :O
today i:
- woke up around 8am. i saw that our school district had a 2 hour delay so sheena was still home. i set an alarm for 8:30am cause i saw there was already snow collected on the ground from last night. if it kept snowing, i was gonna shovel it so the kitchen guy could come in. dad’s also sick so i didn’t want him to shovel
i got up really groggy and sheena was already up doing APUSH annotations. she said she heard dad go outside. i was like “ahhh no dad”. he was just heating up sheena’s car. i rushed downstairs and told him to go inside and i would shovel the snow. it was pretty thin, maybe 2-3 inches. my dad suggested i use the broom and then went back inside
i shoveled/broomed the snow for maybe 30 or so minutes and got it cleared + the sidewalks
- i came back in around 9am and sheena was on her way out. cause of the two hour delay, school started at 9:25am. i heated up some toaster strudels as the kitchen guy came in. he asked mom what she thought between the two vs. three lights. i was kind of confused cause my mom said she wasn’t sure what she thought would look better. i personally thought three would look good but also it’s her kitchen so she should decide :p the kitchen guy suggested two and after some deciding, my mom settled on two. i finished making the toaster strudels and started eating them and decided to watch S1E5 of one punch man
then i went upstairs and continued to go on a binge... LOL i love this show so much. i watched S1E5 to S1E10 or so, then took a lunch break around 1pm. i ate the salad that mom leftover from panera two nights ago. i also finished the blog post for yesterday cause i watched one punch man last night instead of writing it
- i had constipation earlier this morning when i was watching one punch. i held back on applying the medication for the hemorrhoids cause i’m not sure what to make of it. i’ll give it a few more days and see what happens
applied the medication after i finished eating lunch and then finished one punch man S1E11 and S1E12. ahhh i want moar one punch
- also talked to mudit about CS career stuff. he was asking if i had any resources for behavioral questions and general programming practices. i tried to give a few examples of behavioral answers i give and realized that they might not actually be that impressive... but i also feel like interviewers don’t worry too much about it cause they usually focus on the technical portion. we talked about the question “what’s a challenging project you’ve worked on?”. what’s considered “challenging” is subjective and i felt like my example HQ bot answer didn’t really help him... :’( i tried
- spent some time from 4pm cleaning up my phone files. i realized that apple Photos doesn’t let me create separate Photo app things -- they all get bunched into the same thing. but fortunately on my backup hard drive i have everything broken down by months manually in folders when i made the switch a while ago. since i can’t put the Photos format on my external hard drive since it’s not apple formatted, i use the plain folders there. i decided on my mac, i’m just gonna keep dumping everything into the Photos app and just call it “2018-” until i decide to stop adding to it. i liked the geotagging/visualization and live photos feature. otherwise i’d just delete it and manually use my own folders
- shaved my face and then left around 5pm. i stopped by walgreens on the way to get metamucil to increase my fiber to try to help out with my stool. cause i’ve been having constipation since i started applying the medication. then i stopped by wawa near the smash venue, getting a bacon avocado club sandwich and mac and cheese. i just ate it in the parking lot :p
- i got to the venue around 6:15pm and checked in. then i just hung around for a bit. i hopped on a setup and a guy joined me for friendlies. his name was vincent i think. he had a diddy kong that was really good and he wrecked me. then he used mewtwo and i got more wrecked. but after 5 or so games we got kicked off the set up to be used for doubles. but then the setup was open after the doubles game was played so we hopped back on. i met another asian guy named... i forget. his name might’ve been vincent actually... but anywho, we chatted a bit about our lives while we played friendlies. he and his friends just started freshman year of CS in new jersey :o that’s wild. i told him i just graduated LOL i’m so old. we played some falcon dittos or a bit, then got kicked of the setup and played on another one shortly afterwards. we also just kind of chilled at the wall talking. it was nice getting to meet him. we talked about what video games we played in middle school and high school and how his classes are going at university
- singles started on time around 7:45pm. my first set was against a link and i won 2-0. the winner of our set got placed on the streaming setup against a really good king dedede. while i was waiting i was messaging deepak about it LOL. he saw that the guy i was playing against placed 9th last week at the venue and his dedede is really good. oh boi
i got on the set up around maybe 8:30? anyway i saved the link so you can see a play by play but i got wrecked 0-2 LOL. he was really good at spacing with his gordos and i also kept overextending when i shouldn’t have. he was also part of a crew and they were also cheering him on on the side occasionally which was kind of distracting but oh well. he was clearly the better player. after we finished, we went to report the score and he told me about falcon’s nairs. i can’t string them in a combo on heavy characters like dedede unless i have rage or something. that was really nice of him to share with me :)
waited around for a little longer and then played against an ike in loser’s bracket i won 2-0. i felt kind of bad cause i found out it was the first tournament for the guy i was playing against. so basically me last week :p
finally my fourth game was against a lucina. i won the first game, lost the second game in a really close one, and then sd’ed in the third one and lost 1-2. it was a really close matchup though. we kept getting neck and neck, one stock each and at like 100%+. oh well, gg’s to him. he said i should ask him to play friendlies later
i hung around for a bit until a setup opened up and just as i got on, he also got knocked out. i learned that his name was matt and we just played friendlies from 10-11pm. he was a really nice dude. he played pichu and wolf. i played snake and mario. and then we both went back to lucina vs falcon for a few times at the end, playing another mock set. again, so close each game but i lost 1-2 :p
he game me his phone number cause he said if i wanna play doubles with him next week i should let him know. i was like booyah yeah sure. if i can make it next friday i’d be down
- drove home and got back around 12am. watched myself play on stream just to see what the commentators were saying. one of them gave me a semi compliment saying i wasn’t playing too badly considering i’m a newer player LOL
i’ll take it
anyways, that’s about it
i went to sleep around 1am
the end

I Tried Naked Yoga and Have Some Thoughts to Share

I Tried Naked Yoga and Have Some Thoughts to Share
I’m sitting on my yoga mat, sandwiched between two middle-aged men in business suits. The room glows softly with the haze of low fluorescent lighting, and the couple behind me is chatting animatedly about their workweek. I swallow and try to distract myself with a warm-up. You have to look totally unbothered, I tell myself. It’s worse if people notice that you’re nervous. What I’m trying so hard to forget is that in a matter of minutes, I’m going to see these people naked. Every single one of them.

How I ended up in a naked yoga class on a Wednesday night is evidence that I’m a pro at signing up for things I might later regret. When I reveal my evening plans to my roommate, her response is immediate. “I would have a panic attack,” she says. But from the moment I discovered Naked in Motion, the business behind this fad, I knew I had to try it. The idea of doing downward dog in the nude, all in service of some kind of broader mission, felt like the perfect combination of hilarious and bizarre.
The company’s website calls naked yoga a social movement. It’s all about body positivity and helping students shed feelings of inadequacy and shame. “We offer you the opportunity to shed your clothing, and along with it, judgments about your appearance, limiting personal beliefs, and self-talk,” reads the description. “We maintain that all people deserve love and care.” One $15 deposit later, and I’m on the list.
As I start getting ready for class, reality begins to sink in. Maybe I was overeager. Maybe this is an absolutely terrible idea. What do I even wear to a naked yoga class? I choose what I consider to be a sensible ensemble: black leggings and a denim jacket. For some reason, my clothing choices feel more important since I know they’re about to be completely unnecessary.
I make my way to an apartment building in Chelsea, and the girl in the elevator with me hits the button for the same floor. To my immense relief, she looks ordinary and not the least bit concerned about our impending communal nakedness. I feel better already. “Are you here for yoga too?” she asks. “Yes. It’s my first time,” I respond cheerfully, trying to look equally nonchalant. I’m the queen of composure right now.
In the studio, a small rented room on the eleventh floor, Willow Merveille greets me with enthusiasm. She’s the founder of Naked in Motion, and her delicate features and black pixie cut remind me of a woodland fairy.
But panic sets in when I round the corner and notice at least four older men wearing button-downs and khakis. Of course they’re still in khakis. It’s not like they need workout clothes when everyone is getting naked in a matter of minutes, I think. Willow smiles at me expectantly and says, “Feel free to put your stuff down and get settled! Front or back row?” I shrug. “Wherever is fine!” My voice comes out at least several pitches higher than usual.
I take a seat, seemingly the only one concerned with the current state of affairs. The class has around 20 students, mostly male, ranging in age from the mid-20s to early 60s. Many appear to be regular attendees. Willow calls our attention as she sits down to recite the community rules.
“Rule No. 1: Nudity is mandatory.” I’m in too deep at this point, I think. The only legitimate escape route would require me to sprint out of this room in front of everyone. Willow goes on to list the basic expectations, which boil down to “stay in your own space” and “don’t be creepy.”
In an effort to cultivate a safe space for everyone, women and transgender students are allowed to wear bottoms if they so choose. There’s also no “cruising,” which means that students cannot ask each other to hang out outside of class. The goal is to facilitate a friendly space without allowing room for anyone to feel threatened.
To my great distress, there’s even a rule about erections. I hadn’t considered this possibility until now. Apparently, the best thing to do in most cases is take a child’s pose, or simply ignore it until the moment passes. I’m glad she addressed this, truly I am. But also, ohmygodwhatamidoinghere?
Willow finishes her speech with a simple, “OK, let’s begin,” and with that, everyone in the room starts stripping down.
It’s happening. I close my eyes and take off my clothes, ignoring my fight-or-flight instinct. When I finally look around the room, I try hard to avoid direct eye contact. Unfortunately, I still catch glimpses of body parts I’d rather not be seeing.
I quickly decide my best plan of action is to pretend I’m the only person here. I can follow instructions while staring directly at the wall, so I listen to Willow’s voice as she guides us through the first few sequences. She’ll often stop to say, “Try to focus your eyes on something that’s not a human being.” This feels like it goes without saying, but it’s a relief to hear it out loud.
Before coming to class, I’d wondered whether our instructor would keep our poses pretty tame, given that we would be all… well, naked. The answer is nope: In class, we move from warrior two to tree pose to a version of standing splits. Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, is hidden from view.

Toward the middle of class, I have this strange moment where I realize I don’t feel self-conscious anymore. There’s something kind of beautiful about being surrounded by people in their most vulnerable and human state of being. People are people, and bodies are bodies, and it’s rare to find a safe space where we can all exist in our truest forms. Of course, at the same time, I really, really, really want to put my pants back on.
We end the practice in savasana, and people begin to pack up their things. Some take their time getting dressed again, even standing in the nude to chat about their families or weekend plans. I, for one, throw every single layer back on my body as soon as I’m given the go-ahead.
“Is this your first naked event?” a young guy asks me (thankfully, he and I are both fully clothed at this point). He says this as nonchalantly as if he were asking about my favorite breakfast cereal. “Yeah! I was honestly a little nervous,” I say, as if I had no reason to be nervous whatsoever. He tells me this is his first time getting into yoga and he’s been coming for a few months now. The community here has been really amazing. I tell him I don’t usually come to things like this and I’m still feeling out of my element. Then I concentrate really hard on tying my shoelaces.
At Panera Bread, after class is over, Willow tells me more about her personal mission. She started naked yoga as a way to help others feel more confident, and she wants to facilitate positive conversations about sexuality and emotional health. “There’s something very powerful about coming into a space and saying, ‘I’m going to allow myself to be vulnerable,'” she says. “I get to decide what I think about my body. I get to decide how I expect others to treat me. I get to decide the way I’m going to treat myself.”
And I have to say, I really understand this perspective. As women, we often feel like we do not have ownership over what is ours. It’s unusual to find a space where we can exist without fear of being sexualized. Strangely, I didn’t feel threatened in class in the slightest, and most of my apprehension came from the preexisting fears I brought with me through the door.
I’m not the only one who feels this way. Myhanh, who’s been coming regularly for the past year, says that Willow’s class has radically changed her self-image. “I always feel very safe,” she says. “I feel empowered to stay and enforce my boundaries.” She grew up feeling ashamed of her body, surrounded by women conventionally considered more beautiful. This practice has taught her to appreciate what her body can do. “Doing this is a way to normalize how I view my body and how I view bodies in general. After a while, you even forget that you’re naked.”
For another student, Naked in Motion represents a shift in how we talk about the human figure. “We have the most cognitive dissonance about how we treat bodies,” he says. “We want to put them in posters and draw attention to how beautiful they are, but once we actually focus in on one, it’s obscene and shameful.” Naked yoga gives people a safe environment just to move, exactly as they are.
I appreciate what Willow is doing, and it’s clear she’s challenging a lot of social norms. At the same time, I’m going to keep doing child’s pose with clothes on, at least for now—but I’m coming away from this experience with a renewed confidence in myself (and the knowledge that a yoga mat feels really strange against your bare… stomach).

#RespectTheEgg: Panera Bread Wants FDA to Be a Good ‘Egg’
Panera Bread has quietly been expanding its vegan menu, but it’s also catering to lacto-ovo vegetarians and customers on high-protein diets—along with anyone who just plain loves eggs—by offering a new breakfast sandwich menu featuring “100% real eggs” starting this week.
For a taste of the new breakfast sandwiches, Panera is hosting a #RespectTheEgg pop-up event on Friday, Jan. 19, from 8 a.m. ET – 7 p.m. ET in New York City’s Soho district at 67 Greene St. Along with samples of the new breakfast sandwiches, the event will include a station “for the perfect social snap and a detailed comparison of Panera’s 100% clean ingredients versus those used by competitors.”
Emphasizing it’s using real eggs is key to the brand’s authenticity messaging, so it’s using the hashtag #respectheegg and also petitioning the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to establish a clear definition for the term “egg.” Championing truth in advertising (and its own eggsacting standards), its sandwiches feature “100% real eggs,” which, at Panera, means freshly prepared, cracked shell eggs and/or egg whites with no additives.
youtube
According to a press release, in developing its newest breakfast sandwiches, Panera discovered that current FDA regulations do not establish a definition or a standard of identity for eggs. Without this, companies can sell and advertise items that contain multiple additives, such as butter-type flavors, gums and added color, under the generic term “egg.” Panera’s goal in petitioning the FDA is to better support and inform guests in the absence of a true definition for the term “egg.”
All of Panera’s breakfast sandwiches adhere to the brand’s “100% clean food” commitment. The new sandwiches feature extra-large, freshly cracked eggs cooked to order and served over-easy on a brioche bun made daily by a baker in every U.S. location and topped with classic ingredients like Vermont white cheddar cheese and thick-cut bacon.
“Panera and our competitors use the FDA definitions to guide our product descriptions and names,” Sara Burnett, Panera’s Director of Wellness and Food Policy, stated. “But in the case of ‘eggs,’ we have no guidance. Brands can say they offer an egg sandwich, but sell an egg product that contains multiple additives. At Panera, consumers can be assured that when they order eggs, that’s exactly what they’re getting.”
After discovering the FDA’s lack of definition for the simple term “egg,” Panera began exploring menus from other companies in the food industry to better understand what’s in their “egg” sandwiches. Panera found that 50% of the top 10 fast casual restaurants that sell breakfast have an “egg” made of at least five ingredients, often more.
“Responsible companies will be transparent about the food items they serve, even if regulation does not require them to do so,” Blaine Hurst, Panera’s President and CEO, said. “At Panera, we believe 100% real eggs are the basis for a great breakfast sandwich.”
All ingredients in the new breakfast sandwiches are clean, with no artificial sweeteners, flavors, preservatives or colors from artificial sources. In addition, guests can customize the sandwiches to their taste, swapping an egg white for an over-easy egg, adding spinach or avocado, or spicing things up with sauces like sweet maple or chipotle mayo.
Customers are invited to try the new breakfast sandwiches at Panera locations across the U.S. and join the conversation around egg transparency on social media by using #RespectTheEgg, which is already starting to pop up in sponsored posts on Instagram.

There’s room for 16 seats inside. (Another location, primarily takeout-focused, will open soon in Boston’s South End.) Projected opening: Early November 2017

hey there self
today was good things but you still lowkey wanted to cry
you woke up, and neither kalie nor kaliemom were awake. so you waited. and went back to bed. and worried that they were waiting for you but you didn’t know.
they were not awake. it was fine.
kalie squatted to pee! you were so proud
and then you went back to bed
until mom came with lunch. panera: sandwich and soup and yum.
then you stood outside with kalie for like an hour while she conducted a Grand Tour of the yard, and pooped twice and squatted to pee. overall, she was doing SO WELL. and at the end, she was eyeing the stairs like she wanted to walk back in the house herself, but wasn’t sure she could, so you both stood there thinking about it for awhile, before you basically lifted her up them yourself, but in such a way it was like she had walked up herself, so you say it counts. ‘cause you wouldn’t have managed (or even tried) it if she hadn’t been so steady on her feet. so that was a happy surprise you and kalie could provide for your mom and her mom
and you picked all the nails out of the walls for packing up
and called to schedule a haircut! all by yourself and before it got bad enough that you were Suffering!
but also you forgot to walk boonie.
so you feel like shit for that
and you didn’t pack your phone charger (cause you thought you wouldn’t need it! your phone battery was mostly full! ......and then you spent most of kalie’s mosey-the-yard hour on tumblr. several times.) and your phone nearly died. and you forgot to pack half of your laptop charger, so your laptop battery ran uncomfortably low as well.
and in the end all you wanted was to go home or get a new brain.
you got to go home.
so you took a shower, and felt much better, and put on proper clean proper clothes
and got yummy dinner at copper blue
before returning to kalie care
and stream
tomorrow
wake up
kalie out
clothes
breakfast
kalie out
haircut 3:30
dinners all around
kalie out

Dunkin' Rolls Out New Doughnuts, Drinks for Spring
There was a time not so long ago when Dunkin’ Donuts (NASDAQ: DNKN) kept its menu fairly constant. It did introduce new products, but in most cases, those were attempts to grow the chain’s core offerings, not seasonal items offered for short periods.
In recent years, however Dunkin’ has been competing with rivals including Starbucks and Panera Bread to roll out new ideas each quarter. Some of these are variations on tried-and-true concepts like pumpkin-flavored drinks for the fall or peppermint flavors for the winter. In other cases, the company has been trying to create new hits.
That’s what Dunkin’ Donuts has done with its spring offerings: The chain has debuted a few new pastries and drink flavors for the season, to go along with some returning favorites.
What it Dunkin’ doing?
For its spring menu, the company has introduced coconut creme pie flavored iced coffee, as well as a line of fruit-flavored iced teas. It has also brought back butter pecan flavored iced coffee, and introduced a pretzel croissant which it’s using as the base for its new pretzel croissant breakfast sandwich. Also new is its peanut butter delight croissant donut, which it said in a press release was specifically designed to be with its cold brew coffee. And, it has brought back the spring flowers donut, a yeast ring doughnut frosted with light green icing and topped with flower sprinkles.
Profitable pastries
Seasonal offerings tend to bring in lapsed customers, and entice regulars to perhaps spend a little more. They have become essential as a marketing tool to raise consumer interest in chains operating in what has become a very crowded market.
Unlike fall and winter, spring lacks any obvious, seasonally-associated flavors. Some of these Dunkin’ Donuts ideas seem promising while others seem a little silly, but it’s hard to know what will click with consumers. Sometimes, the apparently bizarre menu item becomes a recurring customer favorite, while one that seems like a more logical winner gets a tepid response.
In a lot of ways Dunkin’ is being smart by throwing a lot of things against the wall to see what sticks. If one of these new beverage flavors or pastries is a hit, then it can be brought back next year and become a recurring revenue driver. There’s no guarantee that will happen with any of them, but Dunkin’ Donuts is at least putting itself in good position to find its next big success.

main points:
- ate toaster strudels and mom’s panera sandwich for brunch around 11am
- did last 5 NY app reviews
- play fortnite online from 2:30-4pm
- dinner pho with mom and sheena at 5:30-7pm
- shopping with mom at lowe’s, giants, then lowe’s again
- two episodes of one punch man + another one later afterwards
today i:
- woke up at 10:30am to my alarm. then snoozed a bit until 11am
i went downstairs thinking i’d have a real breakfast for once and wanted to make pb + banana on toast. but i couldn’t find the pb. i tried looking at some of the storage containers but wasn’t sure which one it was in. dad also wasn’t sure when he packed it, so i was like oh well
then i realized we had toaster strudels, so i heated those two up. mom said she didn’t want the sandwich from panera so she let me have it. so i toasted that up and that was my brunch
- went upstairs after eating and did the last 5 NY app reviews that i had. then i helped move some of the backsplash tiles that came in. a new guy came in this morning to check out/measure the countertops and he dropped off those tiles at our door so i moved them in. it was like maybe 10-12 boxes of them
- i decided to play fortnite team rush online from 2:30-5pm. i just kind of watched a few games of smash ultimate in my down time. it was more so just to relax and pass the time. i got one good game where i got 13 kills. i love respaaaaawn
- went to get dinner with sheena and mom at a new pho place around 5:30pm. we needed to go to lowe’s after but sheena needed to come back and do homework so we took two separate cars. we originally suggested pho cause dad’s still kind of sick but we also didn’t want to force him to leave the house if he didn’t feel well. he said we could get him some instant noodles when we come back
- got to the pho place around 6 and ate until 7pm. they had some rice chip things that i haven’t had since i was a kid. they were SOOOO good. i asked for another plate and ate all of it LOL. they’re like crunchy light rice chips... idk how to describe them but the asian grocery store we went to when i was a kid had them at the front. the pho was also pretty solid. good noodle quantity too
- we finished eating around 7pm. then mom and i drove to the lowe’s in the shopping plaza down the street. sheena took her car home so she could start on homework. i went with mom to go get 42 cabinet handles and then start looking at dishwasher options. it took us a while to find all available cabinet handles. the customer service rep said there were 43 in stock but often times they’re not always accounted for. we were able to find 25 of them in the store with the help of two customer reps. then we went to the back where the dishwasher was and tried to find one that was a good series like bosch 300 or bosch 500. we asked one of the reps to help us and they said they only have the 100 or 500 in stock. but mom didn’t like the color of the 500 and the 100 didn’t have as many features as the 300. after some back and forth, we decided to go for the 100. but then the guy said he had trouble putting in our order and said we could try to come back tomorrow so he could put it in the system properly. i asked if we could just go to the lowe’s near our house and he said that was fine cause nothing was in the system in the first place. we were there maybe 7-8pm
- we were on our way to the lowe’s near our house but stopped by giants on the way to get dad some instant noodles. also i got some ketchup, milano cookies, cheez its, chips and some muffins as snacks. so i can eat it at home LOL
- then we drove over to the lowe’s, got the remaining 17 cabinet handles (fortunately they were in stock) totaling 42. then we went to the back again to ask about the dishwashers. they had a different variety than the other lowe’s and had a bosch 300 series which mom liked and dad liked (mom was calling dad on the phone periodically to ask him this stuff). we talked to the woman and she put our order in the system to be delivered. but first they need to send a detail in to make sure the dishwasher will actually fit (since it’s not a replacement it’s a new installation)
- we paid and left lowe’s getting back home around 9:30pm. i looked a bit online at youtube vlogs of what it’s like to be a doordash driver cause i was considering it to maybe trigger the chase deposit bonus thing LOL. maybe... we’ll see
then i wanted to watch some one punch after watching OVA so i watched S1E2 and S1E3
- then i took a shower and was in bed by like 12:30am. i was ready to pass out. sheena was still working on an in class essay response for lang. and also had some APUSH annotations to do :o fortunately it might be a 2 hour delay tomorrow cause of pending snow
- then i was on my phone learning about prolapsed hemorrhoids and realized i probably have a grade 2, which doesn’t seem too bad but might need the rubber band ligation. earlier today i was wiping after a bowel movement and accidentally pushed the hemmorhoid in, i’m wondering if it’s getting better or worse from the medication. also i’ve been having constipation since i started applying the medicine on tuesday... not sure what to make of it but i’ll give it some more time and call the doctor if not
- i was lying in bed thinking about the bird box trailer cause i was curious what exactly this movie’s about since everyone was talking about it a few weeks ago. the trailer kind of freaked me out so i watched one punch man S1E4 to think of something else LOL
then i went to sleep at like 1:30am
the end

main points:
- banana + internet browsing. dad was sick today and stayed at home :o
- leftover wawa for lunch + scrubs
- photo editing
- set up chase account... then realize i need direct deposit to get the sign up bonuses... :’(
- NY app reviews
- chipotle / panera run + bob’s burgers
- one punch man OVA binge
- shower/clean ears
- NY app reviews / smash
today i:
- woke up around 9:50am, before my alarm was about to go off. i chilled in bed for a bit and then saw the new spiderman trailer!! ahhhhh hype. it’s spiderman: far from home
- i ate a banana for my breakfast while watching some smash videos on youtube. i thought i was home alone with the guy doing kitchen renovations but dad was actually home too. i saw his car was home and then checked his bedroom and he was sleeping. at dinner last night he said he may be getting a bit sick so... :o
- i went to the fridge to get my leftover club sandwich and chicken wrap from monday as my lunch. i got dad some hot water and a banana as well. watched another episode of scrubs while eating S2E10
- edited cici’s photos that we took back at venice beach. last night she got back to me after i bumped the message from before about which photos she’d like me to try to color correct. i think i like the color correction, it’s tinted red ish cause it was sunset and has a nice aesthetic. i tweaked it from the photo of myself on venice beach that cici took which i edited from like during christmas while we were in CA
- set up my chase account from 2-3pm. i figured i might as well right? and i saw there were sign up bonuses of up to $350 for just making an account. then once i made the account, i saw the terms (cause i didn’t pay attention and read the fine print at the beginning). but i need a direct deposit into the account in order to trigger the first $200 bonus for the checkings account. then a whopping $10,000 in my savings in order to trigger the $150 bonus. yikes... rip. i tried to see if there was anything i could do to trigger at least the direct deposit for checkings. robinhood might work...? but it said i couldn’t withdraw to my chase account until 5 days after a new account was linked to it. so i guess we’ll see. sigh, i shouldn’t have rushed this. i might not be able to get that $350.... :’(
- did like 3 NY app reviews from 3-3:30. then helped give sameer some advice about what to do cause he wants to apply to NY but just got an internship offer in boston. did some more NY app reviews
- went with sheena to panera and chipotle to pick up dinner. we ordered dad some soup and mac and cheese cause he’s sick. also got salad + sandwich combo for sheena and mom. i wasn’t feeling panera so i decided i’d pick up chipotle (we ordered panera on my phone on the app for pick up). since chipotle was across the street so it was convenient
- ate some chipotle and watched bob’s burgers S6E7 to vary things up a bit instead of constantly watching scrubs
- saw a one punch man in my recommended videos on youtube. i watched the clip and i was like “i wanna rewatch this”. then i went on netflix and couldn’t find the clip... and then i realized there were a bunch of things called OVA episodes. bonus episodes that come with blu ray or DVD purchases. so i found them online and just binged all of it. there were six episodes, the first one was 20 minutes. the rest were 10 minutes ish each. omg i missed one punch man. what a nice little easter egg/treat. they were like backstories/filler stories in between the normal episodes of the TV show. so hyped for season 2 ahhh
- took a long shower and then cleaned out my ears using the debrox thing around 10pm. i felt a very very mild itching in my throat when we were on the way back from chipotle and suspected i might be getting sick too... so i drank a bunch of hot water
- did 2 more NY app reviews and then started typing this blog post and playing smash with jwoos. but i sent a message to our disc if anyone wanted to play fortnite earlier and trevor and bryan responded. so i played maybe like 5 games with jwoos and now i’m on discord with trevor and bryan at 11:46pm ready to play some fortnie. well almost ready, i’m waiting for an update it’s at 88%... almost there
the end
