Planning for a LotR Regency AU (Boromir/OFC)

I'm not going to tag this because it's going to make me look completely insane, but I thought @scyllas-revenge and @trenko-heart you guys might be interested... I have spent way too much time on this (ngl it was fun though xD )

The challenge: How to convert the LotR characters into Jane Austen-style regency characters? I've watched the entire Ellie Dashwood YouTube series to try to ensure I correctly understand how titles and lineages work. Here were my problems and the ways I've decided to tackle them as I plan this fic - some of this may change once I actually start writing, but this is my thought process!

Problem 1: In the regency, people (ie peers/gentry) didn't refer to others by their first names. I had to choose between either: ignoring this historical fact and letting my characters use other characters' first names; making their 'known names' into their titles (eg Lord Boromir is the 'Duke of Boromir'); or, assigning them surnames and having characters refer to each other by names unfamiliar to readers.

I decided to go with the last option which is more historically accurate, principally because if I tried the second option, I would still run into trouble with siblings and parent-children relationships (Faramir is the brother of the Duke of Boromir?? No) - therefore, I'll need to accept that it might be hard for readers to follow who is who in this fic, at first. Eg (as explained below) most other characters will call Boromir 'Lord Ithilien', 'the Lord of Ithilien' or 'Coloniel Hurin'. And to be honest, now that I've stared at this for a few hours I'm actually starting to not mind it that much. I also think it feels more 'Jane Austen-y' for characters to have lots of confusing titles :p However, I think I'll at least let my protagonist 'think of people' by their first names in the narrative, which will assist with clarity.

Problem 2: Most of the characters don't have last names.

Problem 1 leads to this. My answer: I made them up. I tried to pick names from their lineage or alternative names that sounded right. For Denethor's line, I picked 'Hurin'; Aragorn's = 'Telcontar'; Elrond's = 'Peredhel'; Theoden's = 'Eorl' and Eomer+Eowyn's = 'Steelsheen'. I also gave Sauron a first name ('Mairon') and picked a random surname for my protag Cin ('Eradan').

Problem 3: It's extremely unlikely a Steward would be ruling in place of a King.

The more likely scenario (as seen in the regency period itself) is that a Prince Regent rules in place of a King because of illness, absence or minority. I decided to go with the latter - so my idea is that Aragorn's parents died when he was not yet of age and so a Prince Regent took over. This would most likely be his closest living relative - so I decided to make Denethor related to him (I've ended up making Denethor Aragorn's first cousin once removed - any closer and Aragorn would share a surname with Boromir and Faramir, which I didn't want).

Problem 4: Leading on from problem 3... I don't want Boromir to be too closely related to my protag Cin (for obvious reasons!)

I was originally going to make her Aragorn's younger sister, but that would make her and Boromir second cousins. That's a bit too close! So I made her Aragorn's first cousin on his mother's side - so Cin and Boromir are both cousins to Aragorn but have no blood connection to each other. Whew!

Problem 5: I wanted to somehow convert the main conflict of Sauron versus the West into the 'Jane Austen' realm - ie the 'battles' occur mostly during conversations.

I decided to include a plot point like this: Denethor has done something to disgrace himself and get kicked out of the role of Prince Regent (this feeds into Boromir's feelings of inadequacy regarding his line). The next closest relative steps into the role - Sauron! Oh no! This will be the main world conflict of the fic and is the prompt for Aragorn, who is now of age, to return and take up his role, and save his people from the ravages of this unqualified leader. I squeezed Sauron into the family tree as Aragorn's first cousin twice removed.

Problem 6: But, I still want some battles, if not 'on screen' then at least referenced.

This is straight from Sharpe, but my idea is that there is a war going on and many peers' sons have commissions in the Army. Boromir is a Colonel (the highest rank you could purchase), Faramir is a Major (because there's no way in hell Denethor would fork out for a higher rank than that), Theodred was also a Major before he died, Eomer and Legolas are both Captains. And they all go off to fight together, mainly so that Boromir can get injured and give us the opportunity for some h/c xD

Problem 7: So, what happened to Aragorn (and Cin) after his parents died, then? How come Sauron is able to step in and take over?

Sticking reasonably closely to the canon storyline, I decided to make it that Elrond (ALSO a distant relation of Aragorn - second cousin once removed, making Arwen Aragorn's third cousin, which is far enough removed to be okay, I think) stepped in to take care of Aragorn. My idea is that his parents were killed in the same 'accident' as Cin's, so Elrond takes both in as wards. He hides them from society in order to protect them both.

Problem 8: If Aragorn is the Prince, Denethor must be a sufficiently senior peer in order to hold the Prince Regent position (for a time, at least) - even though in Jane Austen most characters are not this senior in rank.

I mean, there's Lady Catherine de Bourgh and a few other mentions of Knights and Earls, etc. But I'm okay with adding peerage titles into this fic because it's fun and I think it fits - the various families must be sufficiently senior otherwise it's not realistic that they're all hanging out together. So I've made Denethor a Duke, which is the most senior rank in the peerage without being actually royal (I went with 'Duke of Osgiliath'). Dukes normally have secondary titles which they lend to their son and heir, so for Boromir I picked 'Earl of Ithilien' (as I mentioned above). I made Elrond a Marquess, and his heir Elladan a Baron, and I made Theoden a Viscount. So all those characters get to be referred to by weird titles!

So, this is becoming a crazy long post, but here's the result of my work:

This is not easy-peasy-lemon-squizzy. This is difficult-fucking-difficult.

I hate myself for the person I am because my first reaction was “that’s a drag, I don’t remember much of the manga already”. But then I remembered complex human relationships is nyom-nyom-nyom. And so fell in love with working on it more and more as I went. So here you go, @gogolparadise

Unfortunately, I am one of those people who doesn’t blame Ango for Oda’s death. My blaming scale looks more like this: Gide, Oda, Mori, everyone else. I blame Oda for Oda’s death, mostly. And there’s no denial about who shot Odasaku in the first place. But Ango isn’t blameless. He done fuck up.

I won’t write how and when Dazai sabotaged the airbag, I am sure even he wouldn’t know it either. P L O T. The scene between Ango and Dazai unfolded differently in manga and anime. And I like manga’s version better. I rarely use Japanese respectful suffixes like “san” and “kun”, but here….it’s sorta important.

Rhetorical.

He couldn’t deny the fact that having a gun in his hand felt distantly pleasant. The power and control that came with the weight in his hand would add more pleasure to it. But the weapon was oddly light compared to his memories of handling one. It wasn’t loaded. A good decision: a smart and safe decision. If Dazai couldn’t trust himself, he could trust in the distrust people have for him. And no one would know that better than someone he once called a friend. The two loyal guard dogs wouldn’t be able to stop him if that’s what he wanted. The resting blade against his neck only sharpened that tiny thrill coursing through his veins. It was bringing up old memories of having his life on the line every other day. The sound of raining shots, the lightning bolt shine of it, the heat of the muzzle afterwards. And the lingering smell of gunpowder. Unloading the gun was the smartest decision his once-friend had ever made. Because Dazai also couldn’t deny the fact that when it was aimed at the back of Ango’s head, it felt invigorating.

“What on earth made you think…” Dazai asked calmly. “…that I had forgiven you?” He didn’t regret asking. The question didn’t need to be answered. There was no need to have a conversation about that part of history. After all, there was too much to forgive, and Dazai didn’t even start on it. But asking had to clearly state where they stand.

“I was the one who cleaned your record when you fled the Mafia. If anything, you are the one who owes me,” Ango replied, unfazed by the threat, and even sounding a little exasperated.

“Alright.” Dazai easily dropped the threat, the aim of the gun, the feeling coursing through his veins. “The gun isn’t loaded. You knew I’d do that.”

A hand was offered to collect the empty weapon. “I am glad you catch on so quickly.” The man in glasses offered a calm, collected smile, with a little amusement traced in the lines of his face. Dazai would roll his eyes at this if the man wasn’t so obviously looking. Credit given where its due, Ango wasn’t slow on the uptake — always deceitfully sharp. But Dazai didn’t appreciate proximity or eye-contact. Least of all he wanted to grow an appreciation for Ango’s quick thinking, stoic and neutral approach, and overall efficiency. He remembered the man from the past too vividly, and separating those images was harder than it should have been. Liar. Traitor.

“If we are not rekindling our old friendship,” Sakaguchi spoke again, more hesitantly this time. “…What do you want?”

How eloquent and bold it was to say that there was something to rekindle between them. When a torch goes out, you look for a fire to light it again. You don’t wet the cloth and chop up the wooden stick. And you sure do not let the torch burn to ashes. If so, there was nothing to rekindle.

With his back to Ango, Dazai allowed himself to smile. The half-masks he knew how to transform and switch seamlessly. His goals were for him to know. Ango would find out soon enough. The bandaged man shifted his smile into a childish grin. “Oooh…” He patted the roof of the car. “You government men drive fine cars, eh?”

The government man graced him with an unamused stare. A sharp look of a man who didn’t want his car touched in such manner. Pity, really, that should be the least of his worries. Government men drive fine cars, but there are many fine cars in this world.

Ex-Mafia rested his elbow on the car if only to gauge a reaction out of the man he once made a mistake to call friend. “Care to go for a drive?” Dazai didn’t regret asking. The question didn’t need to be answered.

Fine cars indeed… For what those government men got those fancy cars Dazai could only guess. “It’s your job to keep those skill-oriented crimes in check, isn’t it? You mustn’t shirk your duty like that.” He spoke leisurely, enjoying, savouring. There was something sickeningly amusing in the ease of the situation. The tension that was visibly lacking in the air. Ango’s safe driving befitting of a good citizen. The calm Dazai couldn’t help but feel. He almost felt guilty about it, too. The calm that comes with the knowledge of what’s to come. And yet, by all canons of the world, it should not be as easy as breathing.

“We have been keeping tabs on the Guild as well,” Ango finally gave a reply fitting for a government man. A limited, careful answer.

Dazai’s interest was piqued by the narrowness of such words. “You knew…and you simply let them be? Do I have that right?” He knew he did. The question didn’t need to be answered. But he didn’t regret asking, he savoured it without guilt.

“Unlike you, Dazai-kun, I believe in an honest day’s work,” Sakaguchi answered evenly, never taking his eyes off the road. “Do you even know what kind of kind of group the Guild is?”

Dazai could guess that this feeling inside him was glee. There was nothing compared to the feeling of knowing and seeing through the deceit of others even if that deceit was a delusion for one’s self. He cared little for the games the government played, he just despised them. He cared not for the power the Guild possessed, he just wanted to beat it.

“Oh my, wait a moment,” the bandaged man said. “This discussion is taking a strange turn.”

“This is politics, Dazai-kun.”

That’s an exceptionally fine carpet word for lies, deception, manipulation, power play and the like. Perhaps, it was a matter of perception, the things one believes in. If perception can stop you from seeing the world upside-down, if it can grant you the vividness of colours and appreciation for abstract, then it surely must be able to install a belief in the greater good.

“…to grant immunity to their members…”

Like Ango believing in an honest day’s work. Or Atsushi believing in his own worthlessness or that saving people will justify his existence. Like Kunikida upholding his ideals stronger than any other man alive.

“…truly, above the law…”

Perhaps, it was all about the installed moral compass within a person. The lines one draws to walk a straight path. Those constructed margins of morality that should never be crossed lest the world changes its meaning or loses it completely. Dazai’s compass had been broken for the longest time, he could admit that much. There were too many bold strokes beyond the margins: crosses, stains, incomprehensible lines made in indifference and irresponsibility.

“…they’re surveilling our little conference even now…”

But, truly, how morally superior is the government handling the bizarre world of skill-users compared to the Mafia? He couldn’t be the one to judge and tell. He couldn’t understand.

“Dazai-kun, start running away. Now.” The urgency in Ango’s voice brought him back to the oncoming reality. Whatever emotions were hidden behind the glasses, Dazai couldn’t press into his memory. The mind was too preoccupied. He pressed back into the seat — a response of his body to the upcoming and unavoidable danger. The thought of dying had never once scared him, but pain, broken bones, and the like — loathed.

“Run, and tell your agents that danger will find them soon —” It didn’t matter what the answer was. There was no need for it.

If there were indeed parallel worlds — an infinite number of possibilities of the current one — then it could be different. In another world, perhaps, it could be different. They could have never met and, thus, never had their past shared. Two perfect strangers to each other — two parallels never meeting. In a different world where the events unfolded differently, where they still met, became friends and met in a bar with, preferably, a similar menu. In a world where he didn’t die, they could remain forever as they were back then. Dazai would feed them his terrible tofu and talks about suicide. They could eat and drink together while sharing nonsensical stories. There would be no guilt or regret. But that would have to be a different world.

In this world, Sakaguchi Ango, a government agent, successfully infiltrated Port Mafia and then Mimic. In this world, Sakaguchi survived in the Mafia and climbed the ranks. In this world, he had successfully pretended to be a friend to Dazai Osamu, youngest Executive in history, and Sakunosuke Oda, the lowest of the ranks. He done so not out of necessity but because he could. In this world, Sakunosuke Oda was dead, killed in confrontation with Mimic. Ango’s betrayal of the Mafia didn’t matter in the least. After all, Dazai had done so too: even he wasn’t such a hypocrite. In this world what mattered was the death of a man who didn’t get to write his novel. In this world, Dazai Osamu wasn’t a better man to forgive. In this world, ex-Mafia held grudges despite knowing the regret of another.

If he were in a different world and was a different human being, he would understand the necessity for the flowers when visiting a hospital. But he wasn’t, and he didn’t really understand it. Nonetheless, he had done it. A man who believes in honest day’s work deserved that much, at least.

“Why, hello there, Ango!” Dazai’s chirpy voice carried through the ward. “How are you doing?” With a bouquet and a basket of consumable goods as visiting protocol dictates. And a bright friendly smile, of course. “Well, you look lovely,” Dazai lied effortlessly, seamlessly. He had done so not out of necessity but because he could. “I have a fine story for you!”

It was in the very same bar where the three of them met that he witnessed it: regret. Sakaguchi Ango, a government agent who infiltrated Port Mafia and climbed the ranks, expressed regret. Perhaps, that alone was the thing that steadied the Executive’s hand. That, and Odasaku’s presence. Unfortunately, there was no more Odasaku to steady the bandaged Executive’s hand. Only the words of a friend now gone to guide this ex-mafioso.

It was much later that Dazai truly saw the guilt behind the round glasses. It’s much easier to recognize guilt in others when experienced. He couldn’t tell if it was cleverly hidden from others or if Ango had hid from himself.

“Thirty-five count murderer?” the bedbound man asked, unsurprised. Dazai was a visitor but he sure wasn’t a good one after eating from the basket. According to him, that’s what he planned. According to everyone else who could be in the room to pass judgement: selfish, inconsiderate, and even mocking. He didn’t do it out of necessity but because he could.

“Murder is murder,” Sakaguchi stated simply. Dazai remained a patient listener despite how easy it would be to probe at wounds unhealed, to uncap the bottled regret, to stir their shared but erased past. He knew full well what murder was. So did Ango. But the thing about murder and death is that it often was accompanied with guilt. And guilt was a disobedient spirit: it didn’t follow you because you murdered, it followed because it could. For all that Ango did, for all the lies and treacherous moves, Dazai knew one thing for sure: in the moment it mattered most he had nothing to offer Odasaku to cling to. In that vital moment all he could offer were pitiful words that wouldn’t even convince a child. If he had to live with the guilt of it, he would.

“…if you seek other help…I’d be glad to do that.”

“Is that so?” Dazai asked, getting up from the chair. That was all he needed to hear. The task was accomplished. “Well, I’ll be back.”

“Dazai-kun.”

That stalled him at the doorway.

“I am accepting your offer of treatment in exchange for support. So just tell me one more thing.” Sakaguchi Ango was deceptively sharp as ever and just as calm. “When we were struck by that mystery vehicle, the airbag on my side alone failed to inflate. Would you happen to know the reason?”

Just as Ango doesn’t put his regret and guilt out on display, Dazai, too, had trick to hide his darkness. If guilt was a disobedient spirit, then darkness was a parasite set on self-destruction.

Oh, he hoped to make his once-friend regret the question. For it would be easy to hide the smile with his back to Ango. It would be equally as easy to switch one smile for another. But there was no need for that. Whatever it was he hid, the other would soon find out. Dazai allowed himself to smile with sincere darkness of his mind and offer it to the man who betrayed him. There was no need for an answer.

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

He’s really… not. If you beg fervently enough, he’ll pull you close and tuck your head under his chin, but that’s pretty much the extent of Overhaul’s affection.

B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)

You’d have to know Overhaul for a very long time for him to consider you a friend. Even then, he has trouble admitting that you’re anything besides an acquaintance (tsundere boy). Despite this, he’s very protective of you, and will obliterate anyone who tries to hurt or insult you.

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

Overhaul initially isn’t fond of cuddling, but he’ll tolerate it as proof of how much you mean to him. Later on in your relationship, he’ll allow you to cuddle him whenever you need to.

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

I’ve mentioned this before but I have a headcanon that Overhaul has never really cooked for himself since he’s always had subordinates to do it for him. He’s not necessarily bad at it, just inexperienced. He’s great at cleaning, to a fault, and he’d only sit back and relax in life after his goal of bringing the Yakuza to their former glory comes to pass.

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

He’d tell you upfront why you won’t work out in the long run. He gives you plenty of time to gather your things and relocate, but he won’t tolerate you trying to win him back after he’s made up his mind.

F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)

Overhaul feels as though he has to vet you very thoroughly before you become his life partner, so you’ll have to be very patient.

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

Physically, Overhaul is surprisingly gentle with you. He’ll make sure no harm comes to you, either accidentally or on purpose, and when he’s angry, he tends to avoid touching you so he doesn’t accidentally activate his quirk and traumatize you. Emotionally, he’s less tender. Overhaul is known for being brazenly honest, and this doesn’t change with you, but he definitely won’t go out of his way to be mean or hurt your feelings.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

Similarly to affection, he doesn’t like hugs at first. He’s not used to them, but the more you hug him, the more he realizes that they’re not so bad coming from you.

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)

It takes him a while. When he does say it, it’s because he’s realized how much you mean to him, and that he really likes having you by his side.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

Overhaul hates seeing other people touch you, spread their filth to you, act like they’re worthy of you, etc, etc. He deals with this by overhauling them.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

When he’s jealous, quick and rough. When you’re completely alone, he still prefers quick smooches over long makeout sessions, but he’ll be much more loving.

L = Little ones (How are they around children?)

Not… good. He genuinely doesn’t know how to care for kids, and he dislikes not having full control over situations (if you’ve ever taken care of kids, you know that you’re never the one in control, even if you think you are).

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

Overhaul gets up fairly early, so it pretty much depends on when you get up. If you tend to wake up early, you get ready together and he’ll give you a kiss before you go your separate ways for the day. If you wake up later, he’ll assign someone to save you a plate of breakfast, and expect a ‘good morning’ visit from you when you wake.

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)

Lots of cuddling and him ranting about everything that happened that day. Sometimes, he’ll ask you to bathe with him so you can wash each other’s hair.

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)

Once he decides that you’re a trustworthy partner (which may take a while), you’ll become the most trusted person in his life.

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)

Overhaul has more patience with you than anyone else, mainly because he recognizes that you don’t ever mean to upset him. That being said, he does have a habit of getting annoyed quickly, especially when things don’t go exactly his way, so don’t expect him to stay calm with you all the time (but he’d never purposefully hurt you).

Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing or do they kind of forget everything?)

At first, Overhaul only memorizes the main facts about you, but over time, he’ll recognize the merit of memorizing smaller details that don’t necessarily make or break a relationship (your favorite color/food/movie, etc).

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

Probably when he was walking down the hallway and overheard you yelling at two low-ranking employees for talking bad about Overhaul behind his back. The show of loyalty on your part gave him a huge ego boost and he still thinks about it years after the fact.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

Overhaul is protective to a fault. He’ll kill anyone who so much as makes you uncomfortable. Everyone at the base knows not to mess with you.

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?)

A fair amount, for him. He won’t go all out, but he will strategically set up meetings and assign jobs so no one bothers you during a date night.

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

He doesn’t really know how to deal with you being upset, so he tends to kill anyone who offends/hurts/stresses you.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

Overhaul likes to keep a neat and sophisticated appearance, and by extension, he’d also like the same for you.

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

More than he’d realize. If you broke up, he’d seem more moody and irritable to outsiders, all while denying that you’re the cause. He also has more trouble sleeping than he normally does.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)

You can tell how Overhaul is feeling by what name he calls you. When he’s calm or happy, it’ll be “darling”, “dear”, or just simply your name. When he’s angry (not necessarily at you), he sticks strictly to your name. When he’s upset, he leans towards more possessive names (“my darling”, “my sweet”, “my (Y/N)”, etc).

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

Overhaul wouldn’t like to be with someone who makes big decisions without his permission. He likes to be in control, and this extends to your relationship. He’d never abuse you (like, you can go buy clothes or groceries without telling him), just give a heads up before you plan a vacation or something without him.

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habit of theirs?)

Overhaul tends to wake up a lot in his sleep. Having you around helps him to get back to sleep, and sleep through the night in the first place.

sorry for barrelling into your inbox to complain about jiang cheng again but it's genuinely so annoying how many people treat his constant verbal abuse towards wwx as a fun quirk or Just JC Being JC. i know siblings can be vitriolic, but jc blaming wwx for his family's deaths, knowing full well it isn't true and wwx already hates himself for it? jc calling wwx a selfish brat who doesn't face consequences after knowing what wwx suffered? not cute. no reason why wwx should let that disrespect fly

like will he get angry, will he flip out because I have done this commendable courageous thing? Oh no, I should find a way to praise him for taking a long hike in the woods too like it's the same thing so he doesn't feel left out. The contrast with other brother pairs is glaring (like I can picture cases when they separate for the public image of the sect, but there still would be no bad blood between them and they'll get assistance) I'm fully converted to your JC is a bad brother agenda, 2/5

even though frankly I don't think that JC ever saw WWX as his brother. Brother like subordinate, yeah, but his brother, nah, WWX isn't adopted and JC never calls him anything approaching brother or even martial brother. Now I have to ask for your top 3 worst scene where JC lets someone down! Can also be a top 5, top 10 or a full ranking lol :p For real, I was mostly meuh about JC but followed a stan a while back and realized that the whole process of writing meta about JC is literally just 3/5

about trying to justify, explain away or dismiss his actions because during the *entirety* of the story, he didn't do or say a single thing that could be seen in a good light... Not without mellowing his character without canon support, giving him the moral skills of a toddler (ongoing genocide or my feelings, what is most important?) or whataboutisms about other people or situations - like even his fans aren't proud of his actions. That or trying to shift blame on WWX by making his golden 4/5

core sacrifice a wrongdoing or an imposition on JC that WWX should be grateful that JC accepts or ever deigns to forgive him about because JC would have be 100% ok on his own... He would not, he was letting himself die of hunger and lack of sleep in enemy territory, and his incapacity of letting go of things trumps that of LWJ or even WWX who lost 3 families and was turned on by everyone in the cultivation world lol. He can be angry about if of, but not seeing it as a sacrifice on WWX part ?!5/5

So much of JC meta (from what I’ve seen on my dash, I don’t go looking for it because fuck that) is fixated on “He saved WWX from the Wens that one time! It was a huge sacrifice! Everything else he did doesn’t matter because he did a good thing this one time!” ...Okay, I’m exaggerating, but it is like... that is one of two good things JC does. He asks his mother not to whip WWX and cut his hand off (which, wow, what a fucking saint, we should give him a fucking medal for not wanting his brother to be mutilated) and he gets the Wens away from WWX. And, guess what? After he gets the Wens away from WWX and faces serious consequences for doing so, he never goes out of his way to help WWX again. In fact, he makes the situation worse for WWX more often than not. I genuinely think that JC realized helping WWX could hurt him in this new life they’d found themselves in and immediately decided he wasn’t worth the effort.

And yeah, WWX spent most of his childhood having to flinch away from any impressive feat he performed, downplay his genius and cultivation talent (or play it up to ludicrous levels so it could be passed off as a joke), out of fear for how YZY and JC would react. Thinking about it, I wonder if that’s why his reaction to LWJ praising him in a way he can’t laugh off or wave away is so... dramatic. He clearly took pride in how good he was at pretty much everything, and rightly so, but I imagine it was always soured slightly by how JC would complain about it, as if it was WWX’s fault that he was in fact brilliant and JC was... not. WWX’s always effusive in praise for JC because if he isn’t, if he doesn’t act like their actions are equal, JC will throw even more of a tantrum about it. And he’ll still throw a tantrum because he doesn’t want to be pitied, except if WWX doesn’t give him that “pity” he’ll be in even more trouble for “showing off”, and... WWX can never win with JC.

And the whole thing with the golden core! It is such bullshit. “He didn’t get consent!” And how, exactly, was he supposed to do that when JC was openly letting himself die and refusing to speak to him?! WWX had to trick him because it was the only way to get JC to so much as listen to him. And, let’s face it, even if WWX had managed to actually discuss it with JC the result would’ve been the same. JC would’ve yelled and screamed about how it was all WWX’s fault that the Jiangs died and that JC lost his golden core and WWX would’ve still given his golden core to JC except with a side order of nonstop guilting over “letting” this whole situation unfold. At most discussing the matter with JC beforehand would mean JC wouldn’t get pissy about WWX not training the disciples (he’d find something else to be a dick about instead! And probably get pissy about him not teaching the disciples demonic cultivation). ...Also there’s a good chance they’d both get immediately captured by the Wens because they were hanging out at the foot of the mountain and JC wouldn’t be able to fight them off, but that’s not the point right now. Also, acting like it’s an imposition that JC got an insanely powerful golden core for free is just... ugh. Oh, pity him, pity him, he’s now got one of the strongest cores of his generation because his brother loved him enough to sacrifice his own! So sad, so hard for the poor boy! I mean, it’s not like JC cares that WWX lost everything so that JC could have a golden core. If he cared about that sort of thing he wouldn’t have stabbed WWX in the gut and called him a traitor to the sects when WWX suggested they stage a fight. I know the whole getting captured by the Wens and having his core removed business must have... sucked. A lot. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to feel bad for him for getting WWX’s golden core.

(On a related note, people acting like JC not telling WWX he got captured leading the Wens away from WWX is some sort of great deed is kinda... Well. Yeah, on this one, singular occasion JC didn’t guilt his brother over something that wasn’t at all his fault! What a great guy!)

Anyway, the only part of the golden core transfer that JC seems at all upset about is that now he’s conflicted about leading an army to slaughter WWX and the innocent civilians under his protection, which really he should’ve already been conflicted about at the very least, so I really don’t see why people act like he’s the victim in the whole situation.

Gem Ascension Tropes (Peridot-specific: A)

There’s one of my new arts - GAverse Peridot in the house! If she looks a little taller and leggier than normal, she’s supposed to be. I find it kind of fascinating that for nearly every design deviation the canon characters in GAverse have, it’s practically a spoiler to even show it because it pretty much spells out the twist for you. But eh, it is what it is, right?

So... these following tropes (see here for the first post for the general tropes for backstory on why the hell I did all this, and if you wanna see it in its entirety, see it on Google Docs)

Because Peridot is the actual protagonist of the GA continuity and my favorite character overall... her specific trope listing is the biggest overall. It easily towers over the general tropes I just posted. So this here’s the actual biggest hurdle. Let’s see if I can even fit A through B in this. Wow. I was fucking kidding, but nope! Adding A and B makes the links not work! Hooboy, what does that say when I’m already starting out restricted to post one letter at a time to avoid breaking the post?

I make a point not to copy+paste tropes already on her canon character page unless they’re relevant to GA specifically. I went out of my way to use the SU trope page as little as possible overall, really. So while there will be overlap, rest assured it’s there for a reason.

So, assuming you’re that interested to see just how much I have to say about Peridot with all the headcanons made into a massive storyline, just keep in mind there’s no marked spoilers and have fun, I guess!

Peridot (Facet-2F5L Cut-5XG)

A Taste of Her Own Medicine: When Peridot tells Steven how the promotion she worked so hard to get ended up putting her in the same position as her previous victims, as she couldn’t get away with bullying or disrespecting gems above her in the caste system (which was literally almost everyone) and ended up being the one targeted for bullying due to her lowly status, Steven mentions this trope verbatim to sum up the situation.

Academic Alpha Bitch: Her Pre-Earth Homeworld persona; the Passive-Aggressive variant.

Accomplice by Inaction: Regarding Jasper’s abuse of Lapis when the pair was originally teamed up with Peridot. Considering Lapis was (albeit unwillingly) suffering Jasper’s abuse so Peridot wouldn’t have to, the fact that Peridot not only forced herself to mentally repress these moments as much as she could in order to live with herself – but actively did nothing to help Lapis even when she was witnessing the vile acts Jasper inflicted on their informant – has been one of her greatest sources of guilt and self-loathing. Peridot herself admits even when she had the means to at least offer some comfort or sympathy when Jasper wasn’t present, she refused to do it. Granted, Peridot’s inaction is largely justified; not only was Jasper’s abuse of Lapis deemed legal by Homeworld law, but Peridot herself – her kind being so low in the caste system – had no right to interfere or prevent any of this. It was actually illegal for Peridot to inconvenience a gem above her rank for any reason, and the gap between herself and Jasper was wide. This was also before Peridot’s Character Development; despite Jasper breaking her down well enough to eliminate most of Peridot’s absolute worst traits as a Homeworld gem, she was still far from being the gem who presently would have done everything in her power to fight Jasper and protect Lapis. This guilt (as well as feeling indebted to Lapis for saving her from Jasper) is the leading cause for why Peridot was such an Extreme Doormat to Lapis in canon.

Achey Scars: One of the last significant blows Peridot sustained courtesy of 9FC in Chapter 4 of Act I is a punch to the face. Since 9FC had limb enhancers, this punch left a nasty mark on Peridot’s cheek and greatly pained her (although she doesn’t realize she even has this injury, as she never sees how she looks after the No-Holds-Barred Beatdown – and her three nearly-crippled limbs are a bit more attention-grabbing). Thankfully for Peridot, it doesn’t plague her for long, as it’s the first injury Steven heals in the following chapter.

Act of True Love: The mission that plays out during the entirety of Act I is undoubtedly this. While Peridot genuinely wants to save everyone else and worries for them individually, it’s the realization that Steven is no longer with her that makes Peridot jump into the action. It’s her love for Steven that makes Peridot stay the course and see her mission through to the end, no matter how often she screws up or breaks down. Even when Peridot is struck with a persistent concern that she won’t come out of this mission alive, she’s not the least bit deterred and readily accepts death if it means Steven can live and be free. Peridot herself states that life doesn’t make sense and that everything is confusing if Steven isn’t with her, so she’s desperate to save him and bring him home where he belongs. This is an amusing case where all of The Four Loves are in play here.

Action Girl/Girlfriend: Comes with Taking a Level in Badass and becoming a Hero Protagonist. The latter trope is in effect as of Chapter 5 of Act I.

Adorkable: Per canon, and still in effect in GA. Very prevalent whenever the topic of Steven comes up, and especially when she and Steven directly interact. Peridot’s full of this when she actually spills her heart out to Steven in Chapter 5 of Act I.

Affectionate Nickname: Peri and Dot by many friends, P-Dot and Dottie-P by Amethyst, Tiny by Bismuth, Twilight by White Diamond.

Aggressive Submissive: Proves to be this in It’s a Birthday, Yes It Is. Whether or not it has anything to do with the submissive instincts that come naturally with Peridots is debatable. This is Who I Am establishes that such instincts were completely benign in Peridot’s case (likely due to emerging as an Unwitting Test Subject) until a certain Near-Rape Experience woke them up with a vengeance.

Alone with a Psycho: From the end of Act I to Chapter III of Act III, Peridot’s only company after being stranded on Homeworld was White Diamond. For six days, Peridot endured White’s wide variety of torture methods before she was rescued.

Ambition is Evil: When Peridot developed this during her life as a Homeworld gem, she became determined to achieve her goals, no matter what she had to do or who she had to hurt to succeed. This quickly made her The Dreaded of her kind. As time passed, Peridot herself became progressively more sinister and sadistic to assert her dominance.

Amnesiac Dissonance: Once Peridot and her team land on Homeworld, just seeing things Peridot is familiar with starts to abruptly jog memories of her Homeworld life that she thought she had discarded. Reuniting with 9FC made Peridot remember how horribly she treated her own kind to get ahead. This triggered a domino effect the longer the mission went on, though in some instances it was beneficial, such as when Peridot remembered what pallification was after being in close proximity to White Pearl.

Angst Nuke: Once Peridot has a moment to think after Pumpkin’s death, this happens. Deadly lasers fire from her gemstone and inadvertently causes an atmosphere-shredding wind storm that accelerates Homeworld’s destruction. Once she Involuntarily Shapeshifts into Chartreuse Diamond as she cries endlessly, the level of destruction is upped to Brown Note levels.

Armor-Piercing Question: Falls victim to this twice, both times by White Diamond. Both times, Steven is used to expose Peridot’s weak spot, which leads to the birth of Chartreuse Diamond and Celadon Diamond.

Armor-Piercing Slap: Gives one to Lapis in Chapter 8 of Act III, after Lapis invokes an Ironic Echo in reference to Pumpkin’s impending demise. She means well by it, but Peridot is too far into her Heroic BSoD to not take offense to her own words being used against her. Even when it’s justified.

The Atoner: Peridot considers herself eternally this after her redemption arc. Even after doing many good deeds, making friends, earning forgiveness, helping people, and saving Earth itself, Peridot still feels she could do more. When she regains her memories of how awful she used to be when she lived on Homeworld, Peridot doubles down on this role hard. She verbally confirms this in This is Who I Am.

Attack its Weak Point: Proposes this strategy to fight the pallified Blue Diamond. More specifically, to find its weak point with herself and her teammates scattering to the most likely place a weak point might be in hopes of striking the right spot.

Attacking Through Yourself: When Peridot and Steven are stuck fighting each other’s dark selves in a duel to the death (where the dark/light counterparts feel each other’s pain and will perish should one side be killed), Peridot’s duel with Dark Steven quickly escalates into a scenario where Dark Steven is in the midst of choking to death – not by Peridot’s hands, but by her dark counterpart’s, who is well underway killing the Light Steven. Peridot can’t do anything to make her dark self stop this, as the two fights are separated between different dimensions. That is, there’s no way Peridot can make her counterpart stop killing Steven without inflicting damage on herself to disrupt her efforts. Unfortunately, 5XG (the Dark Peridot) retains Peridot’s lost ability to endure pain ridiculously well, so the only way Peridot has any chance of saving Steven is to inflict life-threatening levels of damage to herself. Having virtually no time to think of a better plan, Peridot goes with her instincts and uses a jagged piece of the arena’s floor tiling to lodge directly into her forehead, piercing her gemstone. This does work in forcing 5XG to release her hold on Steven – simultaneously saving both forms of him in the process – but it very nearly cost Peridot her life (and 5XG’s by proxy). Thankfully, the always-merciful Light Steven was there to quickly heal 5XG’s injury while the Dark Steven, having developed a begrudging respect for Peridot (and not wanting to be indebted to her for saving his life), also healed her injury as soon as he recovered from his life-threatening situation. With both Stevens worn down and vulnerable from nearly having their throats crushed and both Peridots too weak to actively continue fighting after sustaining deep, direct damage to their gemstones, both deathmatches ended in a No Contest, which yielded the result Light Peridot hoped to achieve: a scenario where she and Steven come out of this alive.

Ax-Crazy: In Chapter 6 of Act III, Peridot slips into this when she sees White Diamond’s neck and is immediately triggered due to the PTSD of the torture White put her through earlier in the act. Peridot ended up with a Slashed Throat from that (nonlethal considering she’s a gem, but it did shock her into unconsciousness and led to her being manipulated into ascension), so she finds herself intensely obsessed with returning the favor to White now that she has the opportunity.

The Business can aid the Tenno in disassembling their caught servofish to extract the valuable components. He also offers a rotating stock of servofish components,and will gladly accept donations of whole servofish on behalf of the workers of Fortuna, in exchange for Standing with Solaris United. When the Tenno captures an animal out on the Orb Vallis, he rewards them with a tag, which can be redeemed at his shop for a floof depicting the animal in question. As one of the key members of Solaris United, he is heavily involved in their more subversive activities.

Animal conservation on the Orb Vallis

Out on the Orb Vallis, animals such as Verminks, Kubrodons, and Sawgaws can be found, and captured with the right gear. Conservation requires a tranq rifle and an echo-lure (specific to the animal), both purchased from The Business. Pheromone synthesisers, specific to the animal, can also be purchased from The Business and are used to increase the chances of rare species appearing.

Once an animal trace is found, the tracks can be followed to an echo-lure point, where the Tenno can deploy an echo-lure to coax the animal out of hiding. Once it appears, the Tenno must hit the animal with a tranquiliser dart to subdue it, before calling for a drone to carry the animal away to safety.

Finding spoor

"Observe. Our quarry has marked their passing with more than… hm. Follow the tracks."

"They'll be nearby. Follow their trail carefully. We don't want to startle them."

(Virmink) "The mating call of a Virmink. They're capable hunters of smaller prey, but will turn tail and run at first sight of something as formidable as yourself. You'll find Virmink loping across the plains or lying in wait amongst the giant fungi, stalking Pobbers. Now, where is it?"

(Sawgaw, variant) "That is the cry of a formidable raptor the Solaris call a Sawgaw. This crimson-faced bird of prey circles and stalks the cliffs and fungal forests of Venus, searching for rodent prey."

(Sawgaw, variant) "Being an avian, the Sawgaw prefers a high vantage point. Nothing higher than the oversized Vallis fungi."

The Business' story is told in the memory fragments scattered around the Orb Vallis. He ran the Fortuna ARG and was responsible for dispensing the intelligence uncovered during that event. He has additional dialogue in the Vox Solaris quest and the Profit-Taker heist bounties. He is mentioned in the dialogue of Eudico, Rude Zuud, Legs, Ticker, Roky, Little Duck, and Master Teasonai, and in the lore fragments of Eudico, Rude Zuud, Legs, and Little Duck.

What if Runaan had a break down or something and Tink had to comfort him? I'm sure killing people all the time can't sit well, and bottling up emotions will often make the glass shatter. What'd'ya think?

It was the night of the lunar new year and soon every Moonshadow elf would gather on the main market place to celebrate together. Tink was currently sitting at the kitchen table of their most famed assassin and checked the Bowblade he’d just delivered for any faults that could have escaped him before. It was his final work and would hopefully only need a few adjustments before Runaan could use it in the field. Months had passed since the day they met in the woods and Tink secretly prayed to the moon every night that his subtle flirting attempts would finally get noticed by the stern soldier. The smith harboured a crush to an extend he didn’t think would be possible before meeting the tall elf. Now that their contract was almost fulfilled, he had the irrational fear to loose the friendship they built and be alone again. “NAAN?” he shouted, looking impatiently at the staircase in the corner “Come on, we are going to be late for the fireworks.” A good twenty minutes prior, the Assassin had excused himself to change into something ‘more fitting’ and hand been gone since.

“Why are you in such a hurry?” Tink shrieked a little as the other suddenly appeared beside him. He still hadn’t gotten accustomed to the numerous hidden grips that could be used to get up or down instead of the staircase. “I’m not but we are going to be late.” He smirked at his friend who was now dressed in his full parade uniform, rank pauldron and all. “Fancy” Runaan grimaced immediately. “We could also just stay here and avoid all the people.” He filled two glasses with the Whisky Tink had come to know as his favourite and offered one to him while downing the other in one go. “Why do I get the feeling you don’t want to go?” he asked, pushing his glass back. The wine from before already did enough to make him feel warm and slightly bolder than usual. Runaan eyed the glass before tipping it back, too. “Because I don’t want to? Too many curious people that I have no intention to meet nor talk to.”

Early on, the smith had noticed the other’s aversion of strangers and big crowds in general. He’d said they made him nervous because he wasn’t able to calculate threats properly when Tink asked him about it. “We can stay at the edge of the crowds if they bother you, come on.” He stood and opened the door in order to get the Assassin to finally leave that precious house of his. “Alright, alright.” Runaan waved him off and obediently followed outside. He didn’t even get the chance to close the door behind him when the first banging sounds of fireworks sounded through the night. A couple of kids must have found some of them since it was still way before midnight. Tink wanted to make a joke about them getting punished for that afterwards when he noticed that Runaan was frozen into place next to him. “Naan?” he asked carefully taking a step towards him. The Assassin was eerily pale, and his eyes were opened wide in shock. He made no move to respond so Tink tried again, touching his shoulder this time. “Runaan.” Again, no reaction. Now concerned, he gently shook the other “Runaan? Are you okay?”

“Run” no more than a whisper passed the Assassin’s lips just a second before his hand shot up and tightened around Tinks neck with alarming intensity. He gasped for air, now looking into narrowed eyes that were darker and didn’t look like his friend at all. “R- Ru- naan.” He managed to choke out before the air completely left his lungs. He could feel his vision blacking out already as the pressure on his throat suddenly eased, sending him to the floor, violently gasping for air.

When he looked up, Runaan was staring at the hand that had pushed him up the wall just a second ago in utter shock. “naan?” his voice was still raspy but at least he could breathe again. The Assassin’s gaze snapped to him, fixing on the spots of his neck where most likely bruises could be seen. “I’m sorry. So sorry. Oh god. Tink, I-I’m so sorry.” He rambled, backing away through the entry and inside his house. In the distance, Tinker could hear more fireworks. Now that he thought about it, they reminded him a lot of the canons the humans used to defend their castles. He’d only ever heard them once during his time on the border, but it was a sound one didn’t forget that easily.

“Runaan? Are you okay?” he quickly followed the other inside, seeing him lean against the wall that separated his kitchen from the rest of the floor, breathing heavily. This time, the smith was sure to approach more carefully. “Can you hear me?” a nod, good. “What happened?” but Runaan only shook his head and dragged a shaking hand through his hair, messing with the tidy braids. His gaze travelled between Tink and the bottle on the table a few times before he finally replied. “The-the s-sounds. I’m s-sorry.” The smith nodded and forced a smile on his face. “I’m okay; see? Nothing happened.” He tried to get a little closer, but the Assassin immediately took a step backwards, his feet hitting the wall. “Stay away from me!” it sounded so much more afraid than he’d ever heard his friend and something in his gut twisted in return. “Runaan..” he began but was cut off before he could say something. “P-please. I-I don’t want to-to hurt you.”

“okay” Tink agreed and took a few steps back until the other had relaxed a little. “Do you want to talk about it?” he asked carefully and pulled one of the chairs over to sit down. The soldier shook his head but also took a seat. On the opposite side of the table as far away as he possibly could. His hands were still trembling as he reached for the liquor and poured some of it in one of the glasses. Tinker watched patiently as he emptied it, repeated the process and suddenly stood, walking into the training room to get more distance between them. “It’s the sounds, right?” he asked and slowly followed in the large room. A nod in approval. “Tink, please don’t follow me.” Again, the fear in his voice.

“It’s okay, you are not going to hurt me.” The smith tried to soothe but while he was speaking more fireworks sounded in the distance. Midnight. Runaan’s eyes widened again and he backed into a corner, sinking to the ground his back to the relatively safe wall. “I’ve already hurt you.” He exclaimed, staring at his right hand as if it was somehow to blame for that. “Just go, please, It’s not safe. I’m not safe.” The assassin mumbled, drawing his legs up. “I won’t just leave you here.” Tink advanced step by step, praying the other wouldn’t bolt again. When he reached the cowering figure and spoke again, Runaan looked at him in shock seemingly lost in his own world. “Come here.” He coaxed and pulled him in a tight embrace. Under his hands, he could feel the usually composed elf tremble. “They died, Tink. All of them. I couldn’t-“ his friend whispered, voice now hoarse. “Shhh, it’s okay. We are safe. Tell me about them.” He reassured as calmly as he could and rubbed circles across the other’s back. “We were s-seven. M-my fourth mission. Hostage retrieval. The humans, they-they-“ Runaan broke off again and took a few deep breaths. “It’s alright, I’m here.” The smith repeated, sitting down next to him while still keeping an arm around his shoulders for comfort. “-they fired at us. E-everybody died. I-I could see them get hit b-because I was behind them, carrying the hostage. I still d-don’t know h-how, but we m-made it. M-my whole quad dead. J-just like that.”

“It wasn’t your fault.” Tink assured and continued to comfort the other. “There was nothing you could have done.” “S-still.” The assassin argued, now with a little of that stubbornness that was so distinctly him. “I-I don’t know.” He took another shuddering breath before closing his eyes for a few seconds. When he spoke again, his voice was even, if still hoarse, and sounded much more like it usually did. “I feel like I could have done more to save them. The fireworks, they-they remind me of the canons.”

Tink nodded but kept his arm still around the other’s shoulder, pulling him close. “How often do you get those flashbacks?” he asked quietly. For someone usually so composed, the huge loss of control must be devastating. He himself often had nightmares from his time at border and could only imagine how horrible the Assassin’s were. It took a couple of minutes before Runaan finally replied but the smith waited patiently, hugging him a little tighter. “I haven’t had this one for three years, but it occurs sometimes when I hear those sounds. Thankfully it never happened to this extent on a mission.”

“So, there are others? Do you know what they are triggered by?” the general nodded, staring ahead to something only he could see. “Narrow spaces, huge, dense crowds, fire and generally loud noises. But not all of them necessarily have to cause a panic attack. If I can mentally prepare for it, I can block it out. Fire is also not that problematic, just-just if it’s very near to my skin.” Torture was the first thing that crossed Tink’s mind, but he decided not to touch that topic today. Now that he thought about it, he’d seen a few strange scars on the other’s body back when they were sparring that looked a lot like the marks his mentor bore on his arms from handling the hot iron all day for decades.

“You said the one today was the first in three years. What did you do before that helped? So I know what to do next time?” a helpless laugh was the response he got and he could feel Runaan relaxing a little until his back leaned against the wall and one of his legs was stretched out again. “I left. Two times, I had missions that I took because they spanned the new year’s celebration and once, I just walked until I couldn’t hear them anymore.” He left out that he’d not only sprinted through the woods as fast as he could but also spent Midnight in an equally high tree branch equally drunk as the day they met.

“And for the other occasions is there something that helps?” Runaan shook his head “Not completely, no. Though training helps sometimes, it makes me feel in control again, and-“ he broke off, burying his head in his hands to avoid Tink’s assessing look. The smith squeezed him again, sitting as close as possible before gently prodding further. “And?” the look he got in return was equally devastated as it was shameful. “And-“ the assassin finally continued “-drinking… helps.” At Tinkers speechless expression, he seemed to feel the need to explain himself. “It dulls my senses so that I don’t react to those events that sensitive. I tried the sleep medication from the healers one time and it also worked quite well but I don’t really have access to it that frequently.”

The smith nodded, placing his free hand over Runaan’s to show him he didn’t judge the other. “So you have them a lot?”

A tiny nod.

“Most nights, yes but they, ah-well, they got better since we’ve been working together. Diversion usually manages to occupy me enough to forget about them. You once asked me why I train so much and sleep so little, well now you’ve got the answer. I bet it’s not the one you’ve anticipated.”

They sat in silence after that, neither of them willing to break the fragile clam that had settled around them. Finally, Runaan turned towards him, looking into his eyes intently. “I didn’t mean to hurt you and I am sorry you had to witness that. I hope you can forgive me.” Immediately, the short haired elf smiled, genuinely this time. “There was no harm done and it was hardly your fault. Nothing to forgive.” The relief that washed over the Assassin’s face was so evident, Tink had to chuckle. “Thank you.” He said and it sounded like the other didn’t only mean today but all the moments they had spent together since that night in the forest.

Ys Origin

Alright, this one was pretty damn good. I have some complaints, mostly technical issues with the PC version (they're all quite minor), and some issues with the scope of the gameplay. So, we'll start with the bad bits to get them out of the way.

These are PC version only issues, as far as I can tell, screenshots of the switch version and others that also support widescreen seem to have most of these fixed:

Usual issue with Japanese PC ports: configuration is done through a separate exe, the configuration tool itself mostly works fine, I had no problems with it (but do make sure you use it, since the defaults are quite bad), however there's complaints on steam that it has issues re-mapping certain controllers.

I couldn't get my Dualshock 4 to work, either raw, or through D24Windows, it seemed to interpret the analog deadzone as being the upper left? This isn't uncommon in games this old, but it'd be nice to see support patched in.

Dug out my Xbox 360 pad, and it worked fine, except you can't map anything to the triggers, and the dpad and both analog sticks are treated as the same input (also not re-mappable).

Various minor issues with the support of widescreen, which the game/engine is not built for, but the PC version does support and it works fine mostly, issues included:

Health bars for individual parts of bosses appear in the wrong positions, which is generally not an issue, but for the True Final Boss, it made things a bit confusing.

There's a couple of area transitions that look like dead ends, because the widescreen view sees past where the game expects. It's only really noticeable for one exit at the end of Guilty Fire, but it'd also be trivial to fix.

In a couple cutscenes (most obviously Toal's scene with Yunica after disarming the early game teleport trap) characters can be scene on screen when they're not supposed to be, occasionally duplicate models of people who are on screen.

All the above widescreen issues seem to not be an issue with the Switch version (although I think that port has some performance issues), and it also fixes this issue: The HUD looks unfinished, the version on Switch looks so much better, and is mostly much more readable. It'd be really cool to see a patch for the PC version to get the improvements form later ports.

And finally, my biggest issue with the gameplay: This game is 3 ~10 hour story campaigns, each character goes through the same levels, in the same order, with items, enemies, and bosses mostly being identical. The game moves fast enough that it didn't really bother me until the latter half of the third campaign, where I started to just want the game to be done. It's still a Napish Engine game, so if you like a slightly more combat focused zelda like where you move at the speed of sonic the hedgehog, you're in for a good time. Just know that the scope of content here feels distinctly budget, the dungeon is completely linear, and the story will be what carries you to finish all 3 campaigns, not any new gameplay.

General story: ~700 years before the events of Ys I, the civilization of Ys is losing the war with the demons. The Goddesses have lifted Solomon shrine and all the citizens of Ys into the sky to escape the conflict. Toal Fact and Saul Tovah stay behind on the surface to attempt to disrupt the demon's forces from within their ranks. Some time later (a few months, since the demons built Darn Tower in that time) the Goddesses vanish from Solomon Shrine (and later we learn they also took the Black Orb), and the Holy Knights and several talented Sorcerers mount a rescue effort, descending to the surface to look for them. They're attacked during the descent, scattering them, but eventually everyone end up at Darn Tower, and begins to scale the tower in search of the goddesses. Eventually, they find the demons are being controlled by people from outside of Ys, referring to themselves as Darklings - humans who took on a portion of the demonic essence - lead by Dalles. Eventually the rescue party finds and rescues Feena, who explains what we learned in Ys II: The Black Orb is both the source of magic, and the source of demons. The Goddesses have come to the tower to seal away the demonic essence within the Black Orb (likely sacrificing themselves in the process), in order to save Ys (and keep in afloat, since destroying the Orb would cause it to crash to the ground). Conflict eventually escalates and the rescue party is forced to confront Dalles at the top of the tower, where he has captured Lady Reah and the Black Orb.

So, following that, lets break things up among the 3 playable characters, and discuss them in more detail. First however, a brief explanation of the story: The first two characters are sharing their interpretation of events, not the events as they transpired, the 3rd character is the canonical one. I'll get to it when I talk about the 3rd campaign, but the difference is mostly that the first two characters are over emphasizing their actions (they beat all the bosses, were the leader in climbing the tower, etc.) and also exaggerating their character flaws (they views themselves as more flawed than the rest of the characters view them).

Yunica Tovah

Yunica is a cute girl, with no magical aptitude, a big axe, and a big heart. She plays most similarly to how Adol plays in other Napish engine games.

Generally the easiest campaign, Yunica has powerful abilities and enough health to make mistakes, but she's the slowest at dealing damage, so boss encounters tend to last longer.

Her skills are easily the most powerful of the three, with the Phoenix Flare breaking several bosses almost completely due to it's huge range (the most of anything in the game), wide AOE, and solid damage. Her boost/burst mode is basically useless.

She's the only character who gets a second weapon: Her Father's great sword. It's mostly similar to the axe, but it swings slower, has a bit longer reach and wider swings, and does a modest amount more damage per hit.

Gameplay wise Yunica is the most fun, but the least challenging. All of her abilities feel good to use, and are very versatile. Her melee combat is fast and satisfying, and generally I never felt like I was taking damage when I shouldn't have been.

Her story centers around 2 things: Her friendship with the Goddesses, and her feelings of inadequacy due to not being able to use magic (nearly every citizen of Ys can use some magic, so she's probably not treated great). Basically, when she was a child she accidentally snuck into the Goddesses's chambers, and because she treated them like humans, has been their friend ever since. She's wholly devoted to the Goddesses, and forced herself into the Holy Knights for the purpose of rescuing them. During her story the Knights are initially very critical of her, because she's an amateur, but she eventually through her actions is promoted above members senior to her, and ends up respected. She is one of the first to arrive at the tower, behind Father Shion and Eloa (and maybe Hugo Fact), and fights her way up the tower ahead of everyone else. She encounters the lower ranked Darkling Epona early on, and they fight (with Yunica eventually killing her towards the end of the game) but Epona doesn't play much of a role in her story (beyond being generally adorable and teasing Yunica a bit). Eventually she finds Lady Feena, but quickly so to does Darkling Kishgal, Epona's older brother, and the man her murdered her father. One way or another Kishgal beats Yunica, and Feena agrees to go with him and Darkling Sorceress Zava, provided they leave Yunica alive. This is obviously quite a blow to Yunica's confidence, but eventually generic knight dude (her romantic interest) pulls her out of it, and tells her he found her Father's sword hidden in the tower. Yunica retrieves her Father's sword, and has a talk with his ghost, which sees her confidence renewed and a new level of devotion to her duty to protect the Goddesses. Higher up the tower, after Yunica rescues Feena from Rado's Annex (though Feena remains trapped in a barrier until the end of the game), Yunica encounters Lady Reah and the Black Orb, and learns the truth of why the Goddesses vanished. Higher up still, Dalles appears and petrifies the other Knights, leaving Yunica unfrozen just to torture her. This shakes her confidence, but with the help of Hugo Fact (who we see talking to a mysterious Darkling with claws, very briefly) and Lady Feena, the knights get unfrozen, and Yunica becomes a Holy Knight in full. Near the top of the tower Yunica confronts Kishgal and avenges her Father's death. Later still, after confronting Zava, Zava traps and attempts to kill Yunica, stopped by generic knight dude, who dies saving Yunica, giving her an item that can be used to being someone back from death (but only once). Firm in her resolve and duty, Yunica confronts Dalles at the top of the tower, and with the help of the Goddesses and the Holy Knights manages to beat him. The Goddesses use their wings (the source of their powers) to seal the demonic essence within Dalles in the Orb, draining them, and forcing them into a slumber until the demons reawaken. Yunica decides to stay on the surface with a few others (to watch over the Goddesses), while the rest of the rescue party returns to Solomon Shrine.

Her story is easily the 'lightest'. She has her internal conflict, but she's kind of just a headstrong dumbass who blunders her way through things (generic knight guy says effectively this to her face), so she feels like she goes through the least change during the course of the story. She starts out as overconfident, but lacking in ability. Then becomes more skilled, but less confident. And finally gains resolve in her ability, and is seen as such by her peers. Her friendship with the goddesses is cute, and she's generally a fun character with lots of good dialogue, but compared to the other two, her story feels a bit throwaway, especially considering most of her development doesn't happen in the other campaigns.

Hugo Fact

Younger of the Fact brothers, appointed heir to the Fact priesthood after Toal joined the Holy Knights. Hugo is a magical prodigy with anger issues and an inferiority complex the size of the sun.

Hugo is a ranged characer, so no melee, no combos, just mash button to shoot bullets. Hugo has a low movement speed compared to the others, and though he has low health, the first ability he gets is a defensive one, so that becomes a non-issue.

His other 2 abilities aren't that useful, good for taking down specific enemies, but the mines are hard to use, and the fire lasers do less damage (and are harder to aim) than just mashing his regular attack. His boost mode is a good boost of damage, but his burst is useless against bosses, since they become un-damageable when he uses it.

I really wish hugo's regular attack had more too it. It fire 3 bullets straight in front of him, and can be mashed quite fast. If enemies are too close he does less damage because he's hitting them with his stick, instead of the magic. But that's it.

You start out feeling pretty weak, but by the end of the game your damage output is so high that most bosses barely get a chance to attack, and when they do you're behind your shield ability.

His campaign is room-for-room the same as Yunica's but he solves a couple puzzles differently, and fights a couple different bosses, and a couple in a different order.

Hugo is more fun than those bullet points make it sound, but he definitely feels unfinished. Like all the other character's attacks get special properties, depending on if you use them during the rise or fall of a jump, but Hugo does not. They all have a 3 or 4 hit combo attack, he does not. I feel like giving Hugo a charge attack (like in metroid) or giving his normal attacks properties based on the element you have equipped, would have made his campaign much more interesting.

Story wise, Hugo's is the edgiest. He's got issues with his Dad, issues with his Brother, is generally a stuck up anti social loner, and some really bad anger management issues. His story centers around him learning not to pursue power over all else, and learning to rely on, and be thankful for, the people around him. In his story, he arrives at the tower first, and he leads the way up the tower. In addition to searching for the Goddesses, he's been tasked by his father to hunt down and kill the man who betrayed Ys, who we quickly find out, is his own brother: Toal Fact. Early on he runs into Epona, who loses control of the demons she summons, and Hugo saves her. From that point forward Epona will keep showing up, especially when Hugo is talking to himself, and either help him out with no explanation, or try to get him to open up to her. Her crush on Hugo is adorable. Epona is adorable. She makes this campaign worth playing. Basically, she feels a kinship with him because she also feels inferior to her own brother, and is less confident in the Dalles's goals than the rest of them. Miuscha also has a crush on Hugo, she's a boring (but pretty looking) and very shy young Sorceress who came with the rescue party. Hugo is generally an ass to Miuscha, and is oblivious to her advances, and is at points borderline abusive in how he treats her, right through the end of the game. Hugo does eventually open up to Epona (after she saves his life a couple times), and though they remain 'enemies' it's clear they have no interest in killing each other. The Mysterious Darklig with Claws is in fact Huugo's brother Toal, he joined the Darklings (and took in the demonic essence) sometime after Saul Tovah's death. He (one way or another) beats Hugo's ass early on, further driving Hugo's complex and lust for power. Hugo drains the power from Saul Tovah's great sword, ignoring the Ghost's words. Dalles eventually makes Hugo an offer, a free trial of the demonic essence, just to see how strong it'd make him. Hugo accepts the deal (because for a prodigy he's really stupid), goes nuts, nearly kills several members of the rescue party, and is eventually stopped when Epona snaps him out of it. Dalles doesn't like that Epona betrayed him, and curses her to slowly petrify, dying and turning to dust in Hugo's arms. Resolved to stop Dalles and the demonic essence, and no longer desiring power for its own sake, Hugo makes his way to the top of he tower. Eventually he runs into Toal, and they talk it out. Turns out they both thought they were the inferior son, Toal joined the Knights because he had poor magical aptitude, and knew Hugo would be a better successor. He joined the Darklings in hopes of sabotaging them from within. From here (and after Epona's death), Hugo treats his companions much better, and is generally friendly towards them by the end of the game. Just like Yunica, he stops Dalles with the help of the goddesses, and decide to stay on the surface, to keep an eye on them.

I liked Hugo's over arching story, but there's some lines that are cringe worthy edgy loner shit that caused me to laugh hysterically and lose investment in the scene. He starts out insufferable, but by the end of the game he's fine. Interestingly, in Yunica's story he's already behaving like his end game self, from the beginning, in Toal's he's got the inferiority complex, but not the anger issues.

Toal Fact

Elder of the Fact brothers, former Holy Knight of Ys, new Darkling. Definitely became a Holy Knight more because he was crushing on Lady Reah rather than because he wanted to get away from his dad. This is the canonical story of Ys Origin.

Melee, with very fast attacks, very fast movement speed, low health and really low range. Toughest campaign, but kinda for the wrong reasons.

All his abilities suck, godspeed is useful, but hard to aim, and his other two abilities are too slow, too low range, and too low damage to compete with other character's abilities.

His gamplay relies on his boost mode, which recharges fast, turns him into a demon, doubling damage dealt, having damage taken, and improving his abilities.

His campaign is the most different, several new bosses, totally new story sequences, and several changed room layouts (although the room layouts are mostly changed because his abilities are more limited)

You feel like you have too little health for the entire game, and generally have to spend a lot of time avoiding damage during boss fights.

Melee combat as Toal feels buggy. There's a 'sweet spot' to his attack range, too close and you do less damage, too far and you don't hit. His attacks have very little stagger and knock-back, so enemies can just attack through you. Several bosses do contact damage (which is weird because almost no bosses do in the other campaigns), punishing you for using the difficult to control gap closer of godspeed.

Toal is... weird? When the claws feel good, they feel really good. His boost mode is the most necessary, and probably the most powerful of the three. His big issue is that his abilities suck. He really needs some way to crowd control, and the closest he gets is the thunder claw, which pulls enemies towards him, instead of knocking them away. A few boss fights ended up feeling like a damage race, since I couldn't reliably avoid taking damage while trying to attack, despite attacking during what I knew were safe windows during other campaigns. His original plan is to take the demonic essence from Dalles, and then kill himself, to wipe out the demons.

In this campaign Yunica is consistently the 'junior knight', you eventually give her the great sword, and later she uses it to save you.

Toal in this campaign feels inferior to Hugo, but he doesn't really have a complex about it, he just knew Hugo was more talented, so left the family legacy to him, and left to pursue his own life.

Toal does not stay on the surface, returning to Ys to write the books of Ys (with the help of the other priests) and take onf the Fact legacy.

This campaign is much more satisfying than the others, from a 'ties into Ys I/Ys II' perspective. Everything lines up here, including how several items ended up where they did. There's also a big revelation that I've saved for here, since it likely has to do with the other games in the series. The Goddesses are not perfect (which we knew), but they're also not really Goddesses, they're remaining members of a precursor race who 'betrayed the gods' (who were likely also not gods), they're ageless, but the Black Orb, and their Wings, are artifacts from their civilization. When they founded Ys, they were quite young an naive, and though they knew the source of the demon problem, could not find a way to stop it, without potentially causing the citizens of Ys to lose faith in them. They mention that the Darklings worked this out by discovering the Ark, guessing that'll be Ys VI then.

and since i got nothing better to do. now is that some point

spoilers for p5r under the cut obvs. this is very long and probably not phrased in the best way but yeah

so like. the vanilla p5 true ending is already lowkey bittersweet. the whole “we saved the world but akiren goes back home, with a criminal record no less that will definitely impact his life going forward” thing, but it is generally positive and esp with p5s coming out you can see the phantom thieves are still friends and can afford to spend a month together and are still in touch etc, it’s very wholesome and good to see

but like. p5r’s ending does retcon that a bit. like that scene of everyone talking about how they’re making changes in their lives - ann moving abroad, ryuji going to rehab etc - makes it even more bittersweet than the original for sure bc now,,, they’re all gonna have their own lives, which is good, but also the chances of them staying friends or at least as close as they used to be are much lower

so that’s the phantom thieves and p sad for all of them (i’d argue for some more than others but still)

specifically with the last cutscene (excluding the post credits one, i’ll get to it later) that separation is even more noticable when you compare it to the vanilla one - in vanilla the phantom thieves literally drive akiren all the way back home, another detail that shows how their group stays together even through the distance. meanwhile in royal the gang doesn’t even drive him to the train station in the end, but maruki does, showing the metaphorical distance of the group after the game (this was definitely done so akiren has a proper goodbye with maruki and sumi too + an excuse for that one post credits scene but like,,, there are endless ways to execute all this. this was definitely intentional imo)

so yeah we got one tragic element - the group’s friendship losing its strength (i won’t say falling apart bc definitely drifting because. that’s just how life is. and royal’s third semester puts A LOT of emphasis about the hardships of life, and that’s one of them), which is only heightened imo when you think about how 3rd sem started with the group separated, and akiren was basically the only one who actually experienced that initial separation too

next up we’ve got akiren’s whole dynamic with maruki. like, on a personal level i’d say they’re probably okay, but i’m more talking about how this whole situation definitely impacts akiren. it was kind of,, exploitive? in a sense? on maruki’s side, not only in a “help me with my research” way but also knowing akiren’s a phantom thief and trying to get information from him that’ll help with cog psi. and keep in mind maruki was supposed to be an adult akiren could trust to confide in and talk about his problems with

so like while i think maruki’s rank 10 was some sort of bombshell dropped on akiren, it probably wasn’t that bad, more of a “well that’s weird but you were still a guy i had interesting conversations with and you helped me so eh” situation, that only becomes hurtful during 3rd sem. like i recently replayed the sumi reveal scenes and everything around them and you can tell akiren’s mad at maruki there (from dialogue choices but more from how maruki and akechi react to the dialogue you choose)

and as i said. on a personal level they’ve probably patched things out, and it’s clear akiren cares enough abt maruki to refuse to let him die and want to talk to him before he leaves tokyo, but this was a betrayal from someone akiren trusted and was probably vulnerable around due to the nature of why they even started talking in the first place. tell me you’d trust a therapist or counselor after something like that i dare you. like this is just a really sure punch in the face of “oh i really shouldn’t open up about my problems like that what if it’s used against me later on”. obviously this is speculation and not canon, but that’s true abt most things regarding akiren’s character and psyche, so that’s another tragic element to that ending

and now,,,, his whole thing with akechi, or what triggered the original post in the first place

i firmly believe our light is a song from akiren to akechi. i heard some analysis that some parts of it may be sumire talking to kasumi or maruki talking to rumi and stuff like that but like,,, some parts are undeniably akeshu and i think it’s safe to assume the entire song is (and like. it’s so easy to read it that way, way easier than the other ways)

before that, i’ll go back to that post credits scene, the one implying that akechi is still alive. generally, i’d say royal establishes really well that akiren likes akechi and genuinely enjoys being around him, and this scene is another little proof of that i think - and specifically a proof that akiren hopes that akechi is still alive (the fact you can only see it if you finish akechi’s confidant and iirc get his third awakening is another indicator of that - it’s their bond and trust in each other that makes him hope to see akechi alive at all)

so yeah that’s another tragedy - the one anchor akiren had in the fake reality, the one who helped him break out of it, someone he clearly cared about, is dead. or at least, if he’s alive, akiren doesn’t have a real way of knowing that other than a short glimpse out of a train window.

but, well, it’s up to akiren to grow from the pain of losing goro, and the pain from drifting away from his friends, and the pain of having a hard time trusting anyone enough to open up about his issues, and the pain of literally going to jail and having a criminal record for life - it’s up to him to take that pain and turn it into something better to prove the true reality and losing all that was the right choice to make in order to respect goro’s trust and memory

and yeah, personally i think that’s tragic! both the actual suffering coming from it all, but the fact the only worth it might’ve had helps a dead man more than it does akiren himself who actually has to live through it

i dunno i think other people see death as the saddest thing that can happen to a character, but personally i think living in pain, even if it came from a good cause, is worse. especially in that context where the dead wanted to be dead and the one who remained alive has to live with his memory and nothing to do with it other than question is it was all even worth it
