Then & Now
I was TRAPPED in NEW JERSEY when I got tagged for this and it had me rattling my cage. But now! I am home! And I can go hunting for some THEN. And I'm gonna ramble.
Please enjoy my LIVE REACTION to Dusk standing up in a cutscene, so very long ago, in February, 2019:
Tumblr media
As I've said here and there, Dusk was kind of an experiment for me. I thought elezen looked weird as hell, but in a way that intrigued me, and it made me try to make one I liked the look of ... and Dusk was the result.
Tumblr media
I BELIEVE this is my first attempt at a real glam, although I was still getting a handle on how to dress his goofy ass. I also had no idea gpose existed yet. Hiding UI for me, baby!
PS: he was an arcanist for his starter class, something everyone, including my husband, usually forgets. And for good reason, I rarely play SCH or SMN any more. Although I do have warm memories of Stormblood-era emerald carbuncle welcoming me to the game by aggroing 9868356386 sheep in an attempt on my life.
Tumblr media
It took until me getting into Stormblood content before I started trying to do gpose things! And I did it pretty rarely, I was busy trying to finish the MSQ so I'd be ready for this expansion that was coming out soon. Shadowbringers or whatever.
Tumblr media
It wasn't until I finished 5.0 that I got consistent with him wearing his glasses 95% of the time, but aside from that and some new white highlights that you couldn't really see, there was basically no change between baby sprout Dusk and Big Boy Current Content Dusk. It cracks me up that I lost my sprout when I finished HW, btw, knowing when sprouts go away now.
And in Endwalker, his big changes?
Tumblr media
He got his EW GNB suit I use constantly and changed his ear clasps to something brassy instead of silver. Oh, and got a husband. I also started messing with crime, finally.
I thought he'd be basically the same in Dawntrail, since I had gone so many years barely changing him at all. I thought he'd just get graphical upgraded to sexier ears and otherwise just be Dusk as we always knew him. But I was wrong!
Behold, current Dusk:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He grew his hair out SLIGHTLY. I assume it'll be another 4-5 years before I change him again.
If anyone reading this wants to be tagged, consider yourself so, I live in perpetual fear of leaving people out and like to take that cop out instead.
Thank you for the tags, @amalthea-felsblood and @alicelufenia!

My Pinned Post~ ♡
I tried to schedule this for some ungodly hour as to not clutter timelines—but if you still stumble across this, I hope you have a lovely day/night! ^^
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi! Hello.~ ♡ Hope you're doing well and thank you for checking out my blog! This is my personal and only blog where I post mainly screenshots + random bouts of writing for my ocs and their ships! Most everything revolves around my cynical miqo Remia and her developing struggling relationship with Zero, but you'll find varied content here for the few other oc's I have accompanying her on her adventures through the msq as well~
Here are the tags I frequently use to hopefully help you navigate the functioning mess that is my blog ♡
zerem: Everything having to do with Zero and Remia's relationship. til kingdom come: Ship tag for Vetis and Proserpina/ Gremory. wol questions/ wolqotd: WoL/OC question answers. Don't hesitate to send in questions of your own! They can be about anything or any of my ocs so let your curiosity run wild ^^ drabble: The longest writing you'll find on my blog. Roughly 2k word oneshots that I need to get out of my mind and I cross-post these on ao3. idle musings: Very short writing. A couple paragraphs long snippets at best that are just there to better expand upon whatever their subject is. before the flood: Writing and screenies that take place on the Thirteenth before the Flood of Darkness.
More tags will be added as needed but I'll try to keep them as few as possible if only to keep things organized ^^;
If you happen to enjoy my writing you can find more of my nonsenical ramblings over on Ao3! I'm currently working on finishing Aestelle's third fic in her trilogy but will soon start posting Remia's chaptered fic going through the msq. And I also on occasion publish gear-mashups of my own on the Mod Archive. I focus most on my writing but gear mashups and vfx overhauls are a nice creative break ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶
Below the cut is a bit of info about my ocs but other than that, that's it for this lil pinned post! Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy the descent into chaos ♡
Tumblr media
𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕆ℂ'𝕊
Tumblr media
𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐚 A void mage who specializes in voidsent summons and forbidden arcane recollection arts, Remia is a villain in the eyes of most. She loathes helping others unless there's something to gain and is the first to cruelly deny someone if she suspects they're attempting to take advantage of what little kindness she was willing to show. Deep within her soul lies a spreading corruption that threatens to shatter her from the inside. With the few tidbits of information she has, Remia works on borrowed time to try and prevent the inevitable while those around her are none the wiser to her internal struggle. This nonsense about saving a great wyrm is a means to further search the Thirteenth, obtain stronger summons, and learn of a way to purify her soul. Her "good deeds" are all done in the name of self-preservation and nothing more.
Tumblr media
𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 (𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐚) Once a princess of a kingdom on the verge of collapse prior to the Thirteenth's fall to the Flood of Darkness, the voidsent now known as Gremory follows Remia to a fanatical degree. Unlike that of a normal voidsent, Gremory's very essence was altered when she was summoned by an Amdapori white mage and experimented on to reverse the effects of Darkness only to have her aether go from one extreme to the other. She's now a voidsent of raw Light who acts as Remia's most steadfast ally despite no bargain having been struck between the two. Why Gremory is so loyal to someone seemingly so cruel, only she and Vetis know.
Tumblr media
𝐕𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐬 Before the Flood of Darkness, Vetis was a vaunted knight and chivalric memoriate both. Now a mere imp voidsent who has entered a pact with Remia, the details unknown to all save themselves, he works alone to find a means to mend Remia's lost memories and restore Gremory to her true self. And in proper voidsent fashion, he isn't helping Remia out of the kindness of his own heart. He needs those memories in order to see his own dreams come true at the cost of Remia's sanity. Her life in exchange for his and Gremory's shared future is a rather small price to pay—one he's sure Remia will understand when her time is nearing its end.
Tumblr media
𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐬 A white mage of Amdapor who lived during the end of the War of Magi. He possessed great charm and a lovely smile that masked the wickedness he hid deep within himself. The experiments he conducted on voidsent were far too cruel and inhumane for his fellow white mages to learn of and so he kept his work secret, a miracle he managed such a thing considering how popular he was among the masses. His magnum opus to the world was turning Gremory from a fiend of Darkness into a magnificent creature of primordial Light. She served him loyally up until the day he died while helping seal Diabolos deep within the depths of Amdapor. Now a fraction of his soul lives on within Remia, feasting upon her essence while slowly breaking her in order to revive himself. The question of how his soul came to reside deep within her own is a question neither Gremory nor Vetis are keen on answering...
Tumblr media
𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚 A coy and cunning woman from the Thirteenth that Zero says Remia reminds her a great deal of. She and Mariella had met a number of times while traveling from one place to the next during the Contramemoria. Despite the two running into one another to an uncanny degree, there's little Zero can recall about that woman. Though, there are three things she does remember. Firstly, Mariella came from a noble family hence the two daggers she wielded having been made from better steel than most weapons memoriates used. Secondly, she was by no means a hero, but she did uphold a warped code of her own that led many to believe otherwise. And lastly, she died shortly before the Flood, Zero having been the very person Mariella sacrificed herself to save.
Tumblr media
𝐀𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞 Now that the Final Days are no more, the vaunted Warrior of Light has stepped away from her role as Champion of Eorzea to instead pursue her own goals as Azem. She has reclaimed her former self prior to the Great Sundering—memories and incantations alike—and now works alongside her lover Hades to preserve the history of the Ancients in their entirety. And once their duty has come to an end, she and her beloved will return to the star to be reborn alongside all of their friends from those halcyon days. Etheirys is in good hands and she trusts the sundered to survive with Remia and Ravn both leading the charge into that brighter tomorrow. Her part to play in history has come to an end, and now she's only seen when a matter demands her direct intervention. Otherwise, not even Ravn knows where her dear friend has disappeared to.
(Aestelle has an entire longfic trilogy dedicated to her over on Ao3 that you can find here. By no means do you need to read that to follow along with Remia's story, but for those curious about my main WoL and her journey from 2.0 to 6.0, there ya go! aestelle might eventually get a side-blog one day tbh soooo :') )
Tumblr media
𝐑𝐚𝐯𝐧 Remia's sister who isn't actually my oc. She belongs to my best friend who goes by the same name ^^ Ravn is currently in the process of setting up her own blog so once that's how she wants it, I'll link back to it here ♡

Thank you for answering my question about the matching up of written and in-game characters, that definitely helps. I had planned to start playing my WoL first but reading your advice has me thinking maybe I need a character to just enjoy the story then go back and play my WoL. When you play Dark Autumn and Aeryn, do you play one all the way through or do you play Dark to a point then go back and play Aeryn to the same point? My WoL is FFVIII inspired and pulls a bit from the game itself. ♥
You’re welcome! And I know a few folks with that approach; they have their “gameplay main” but their “Warrior of Light” for fanfic, or even their RP main, is another character—who sometimes lags behind on finishing MSQ, even.
Dark’s my first FF14 char, and I never intended her to be “the” WoL. “A” WoL, a heroic adventurer with the Echo, but she is here to help the Actual WoL (whoever that is in my or friends’ stories).
I play Dark through first partially from habit. I got her to 4.1 before I made alts to replay ARR (it was before NG+) and see the other city intro stories. She went through the patches as they dropped. Eventually C’oretta, and then Aeryn, caught up. C’oretta got left behind though, as I started taking Aeryn through story after Dark was finished (I was also waiting on Dancer for C’oretta as melee is not my forte).
Shadowbringers 5.0 I finished on Dark Autumn and was planning to take time before leveling Aeryn. But I began her play through within a couple days cuz I wanted to relive that story. And that’s kind of how it goes; Dark plays through to the end of current MSQ, then Aeryn starts her playthrough a couple days or so later.
There’s content Aeryn’s done that Dark has not, like Bozja and Eureka. I leveled all the jobs and classes on Aeryn and saw all those stories on her first. But for Raids, Trials, MSQ, it’s typically Dark first—and in the case of Raids and Trials, it’s helpful to take Dark first not only for story, but to see the fight so when my FC does it later in the week and I take Aeryn I have a good idea of what’s going on (as I am RezMage).
Dark tackles the main stories first so I get the lore and info, but also my own kneejerk reactions out of the way. I can start thinking of my WoL’s story and how she reacts to it and where the other OCs fit, and then revise that and take more detailed notes on that second playthrough (usually adding to my initial notes and reactions, to see how they match up or change).
It’s also worth noting; C’oretta and Iyna, while part of my EW stories and have parts they take in EW’s plot, and assigned role quests…they are still in Shadowbringers and Stormblood patches respectively. I know the story and lore. It’s my fiction. They’re supporting characters for my WoL, as Dark is, so I can write them where I need them even if mechanically they are lagging behind until I have the time. I do similarly with which of them has done which class/job chain. What parts of MSQ and the Raid/Trial stories the 3 alts take on, compared to Aeryn—my WoL doesn’t do all of it herself.
(Though I do need to push Iyna through the last few StB patches and at least early ShB for general writing project reasons, to refresh myself on canon)
I actually keep A version of my timeline and ideas for the ladies on the blog (spoilers through current content so not sprout friendly). I have others in my doc folders—for jobs, for relationships—as well as all those notes, drabbles, and scraps as I go. But this helps give me a foundation. I can also shift it around; I added the Avengret stuff last year, and Zaine’s service in the Radiant Host only a couple months ago when I determined that was where he received his initial combat training and why he didn’t start adventuring and return to Eorzea until his mid-20s, trying to be the dutiful son first.
So. I play through entirely on Dark. Then take Aeryn through a few days after Dark finishes MSQ. During both, I keep drabble reactions, notes, etc. I kinda figure then, with all the story behind me, where all of my OCs fit into that story, and how. And I do my best to keep track of it in ways that work for me.

I am seeing some weird defensiveness in the community lately so, I thought I’d write a little something up on my thoughts regarding it. Because though I love Final Fantasy XIV, my experience getting into it seems to begun to echo through the influx of WoW Refugees coming. So before I go forward let me say, I enjoy FFXIV. I think Shadowbringers is the best MMORPG story, I’ve ever been through. That being said, Heavensward was over hyped for me and Stormblood might be slightly worse than ARR for dividing its focusing among two separate revolutions. One which takes up a sizeable chunk of the game and doesn’t impact it until precisely the penultimate quest before the end of the main Stormblood MSQ. That being said, I have like 50 Million Alts and am planning an OC AU Comic to be posted eventually. With that out of the way let me say my peace:
I am glad, there is a surge of new players in FFXIV but like...ARR is still a hurdle. The story time meanders, it rarely finds focus and it feels very monster of the week up until the very end and not every player is going to wait or want to wait for that whole “It gets better later” spiel. If a game doesn’t grab a player within its first few hours, its its own fault. Another wave of new MMOs doing something different is on its way. Between New World and Ashes of Creation, the MMO Market is about to be bombarded with potential once more. After Endwalker, ARR is gonna have to be polished and shifted even more to compensate because the stagnation of the last twenty odd years ain’t cutting it no more. MMORPGs gonna have to sink or swim. No matter how much I like this game, I am not going to be writing home about how surprising the twist behind the ambush before Ifrit was. Or that same story beat is used in quick succession for Laurentius and again for Tiduslayer also being an imposter or for Thancred being possessed by Lahabrea or how it turns out the Inquisitor is also an imposter spy.
Like ARR has one twist beat and it is always that someone is a spy or isn’t who they say they are and it never refreshens it. By the end of Post-ARR its the same story beat they used for Ungust and that’s like Hours of Content that amounts to, “Yeah so, here’s another person who isn’t who they say they are.” Final Fantasy XIV is a fantastic game and all, but the incoming population shouldn’t be expected to stick around especially if we as community keep hyping up, “Oh it gets better in Heavensward” or “Oh Shadowbringers is where its at”. You set the expectations too high and they’re going to expect the second coming of Christ and as we saw with Cyberpunk 2077 or No Mans Sky or hell who remembers Spore? You put too much stock in something it is never, ever going to deliver on that promise.
I came to FFXIV during WoW Legion which is turning out to be the last good thing that MMO has done. And the grind, the overused story beats, and the world did not warm itself to me. It wasn’t until BFA that I actually broke into FFXIV and the only reason I broke through ARR is because I had already done the same thing with Dark Souls. A game about banging your head against a wall until it submits itself in defeat out of pity. Pretty sure general population didn’t get into Dark Souls either.
Point is, I am starting see a lot of defensiveness when a WoW Refugee comes over and isn’t instantly enamored with FFXIV and goes to try something else. If someone is turned off by something and goes to do something else they aren’t worst for it and they didn’t personally break into your house and steal your pets. They’re giving valid criticisms as to why it just didn’t connect with them. No one should have to get use to a look or a story. The story and look should be there to draw them in. Serve as a way to hook them and if it doesn’t there is little you can do about it.
And actually now that I think of it, I feel the need to quote a game critic talking about Dark Souls that I feel holds true for FFXIV experience and how the community seems to have to hint at it getting better at certain story beats later on:
“Now, I never reviewed Dark Souls because other titles were out and my playtime was limited, and every time I sat down to it, it was like walking into a dark shed full of rakes, immediately treading on one and getting blatted in the face. Other people with more time on their hands started telling me it was the greatest thing since tummy-rubs, so I'd go back in the shed thinking, "Well, maybe there was just the one rake," before BLAT in the face again!
So I left it for a while, but this week with plenty of free time in my schedule, I thought to myself, "Last chance! I'll just keep tanking the rakes and maybe I'll somehow become really psychotically into being rake-faced just in time to be prepared for the sequel." And I'll be blatted in the face with a rake if that isn't kind of what happened. I've been raking myself all week right up to bedtime, I'm at risk of going blind!
You see, I resisted Dark Souls partly because people kept telling me, "It's good once you're used to it" and I've always held that the same thing can be said about being boiled alive, so I'd ask them to explain why it's good and they'd reply, "Ooh, we can't tell you. You'll just have to find out for yourself." And then I'd say, "Shut up or fuck off, ideally both, in either order!" But then after watching a decent Lets Play of the game, gone over the wiki a few times and a six week preparation with a team of advisors and physical trainers, I was able to break through the wall. And I suppose that's the first failing of Dark Souls; that you need the fucking Cliff's Notes to get into it.”
Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn treads the same road and is unfortunately the entry point in the series and not everyone is built to do the grind all over again after coming from another MMO. Heavensward is an okay story, the aether currents if you’re not an altoholic like me are irritating to track down especially if, like me, you pick up flying to finish exploring a zone. Stormblood leaves much to be desired from the way it sort of forces Lyse down your throat to the way Hien just sort of goes about thing a little too pragmatically to be called a hero and doesn’t enamor any more confidence during Yotsuyu’s amnesia arc. Shadowbringers is the moment the story becomes about you. Which is kind of strange in the context that an MMO should make you feel like you are the central character and WoW’s greatest failing is in that the world changes about you and you have little say in how things actually unfold. It is a difficult balance to find but one Shadowbringers has done beautifully.
But again, to have to drag yourself through a two expansions to get to the actual goods while having the ever present need of FOMO to be with your friends. ARR certainly isn’t doing the influx any favors.
I am happy our community is welcoming and that there is a sizeable group of people sticking with it til the good stuff. To expect everyone to immediately become entranced by this new world we’re being thrown into is a little silly.
I am sure no one I follow or who can see this is causing an uproar but hey it never hurts to just get it out my system. Oh hey and there’s only 3 months until Endwalker. Here’s hoping for another solid expansion folks. Be excellent to one another even those who only stick around for five minutes and then leave the game for something else.

i know i’ve been spamming everyone with ffxiv posts recently so i’ve tagged them for easy convenience
everything generally ffxiv is still tagged ‘ffxiv’ but anything posted while i’m playing the game is and will also only be tagged with ‘char liveblogs ffxiv’
then anything vaguely spoilery is also tagged either ‘char reacts to arr’, ‘char reacts to heavensward’, or ‘char reacts to stormblood’ so that anyone who doesn’t want spoilers for specific things can block those tags if they want
so yeah, hope that helps
i’m also going to tag this post with all of them to make sure they’re the right tags lol
EDIT: about to start shadowbringers so there is now a ‘char reacts to shadowbringers’ tag that people should block if they don’t want spoilers
EDIT 2: stripped the ‘ffxiv’ from all posts also tagged ‘char liveblogs ffxiv’ because it honestly didn’t occur to me that they would be clogging up the main tag
EDIT 3: i plan on starting 5.1 msq content soon and anything from 5.1 to current content will also be tagged as ffxiv spoilers to be thorough (yes, 5.1 is old news but otherwise i’ll forget to start when i hit 5.5 so i’m starting there)
EDIT 4: endwalker prep is under the tag ‘char preps for endwalker’
EDIT 5: not sure how much screaming is gonna end up on here but. all endwalker spoilers will be tagged ‘char liveblogs ffxiv’, ‘ffxiv spoilers’, and ‘char reacts to endwalker. please block the ‘char reacts to endwalker’ tag at the very least to avoid any spoilers because i am playing in early access

honestly the biggest shock of the new uniforms to me is that Michael’s now in command red when i’ve gotten so used to her being in command gold that I actually forgot they changed the meaning of the colours by the time it reached TNG

i know we all joke about the Exarch’s bad aim and him snagging every scion except the WoL before he reaches his goal but...
like, what if he did get the WoL on that first attempt? when the flows of time were still so drastically off
what if the Exarch pulled the WoL through on that first attempt, when weeks in the Source where years in the First, and the WoL has to live and fight there alone, for the same amount of time that Thancred spent there
without their fellow scions
it would be- by the WoL’s return (probably through the Exarch’s death because- without the other scions, would there be anyone to stop that? but maybe not, maybe they simply return normally and the Exarch remains in the First) it has only been a handful of weeks since they disappeared but-
they are scarred and worntorn and aged by years, seperated from their fellow scions, years bonded with the people from the first with words like hume and viis and wicked white and sinner flowing more easily off of their tongue than hyur or warrior of light
four years in the first and would the exarch even hide who he is, in this case?

My Persephone (Pt. 3)
Giver of Life
Spoiler Warning: Content below contains spoilers for the lvl 80 Shadowbringers MSQ, if you have not reached this point in the game and do not wish to be spoiled please refrain from reading. Otherwise enjoy my trash shipping at your own risk.
Mature Warning: The content below features mature themes pertaining to blood, swearing, and descriptive injuries.
Relationship: Emet-SelchxWoL
Ao3 Story - Here    Part One: Here    Part Two: Here    Part Four: Here    Part Five: Here    Part Six: Here
“Yes, you certainly would love that wouldn’t you?” He asked, a sort of venom in his tone as he looked at a hastily written letter. He cared not for the wanted secrecy between Persephone and her mother, only that she had been so kind as to mention where it was, this sanctuary. All he had to do was make haste from his current location, determination in his step; determination not to lose anyone else in this accursed war Hydaelyn brought to the planet.
Thankfully, he knew all the shortcuts in the city and whatever blocked his way was met with a variety of spells to deal with a variety of problems. He tried to be conservative, only opting to use when necessary, but it was already taking a toll on his body. He was sweating profusely, his legs trembled and he had a hard time walking without staggering and risk falling flat on his face. There was also dust everywhere that hadn’t settled from the buildings that had collapsed; his lungs felt constricted so catching his breath was an agonizingly slow process. It felt like his was dying along with the world around him. But he wasn’t going to stop, he couldn’t stop, she was all he had left. He wasn’t going to lose her too.
He couldn’t lose her. He couldn’t lose her. He couldn’t lose her. Not now. Not ever. He won’t. He won’t. He won’t. HE WON’T. HE CAN’T—
STOP!
A thought, a voice nearly caused him to tumble over as it permeated all of the scattered thoughts inside his mind. Hades stood straight, trying to assess where it had been coming from. At first he thought it was a plea for help, but where he currently was, that was nigh improbable; which only meant one person.
Persephone!
With his mind and soul, Hades reaches out to the source, desperately trying to prompt a response. He went to take a step forward as worry clouded his mind, but at that moment a disturbance caught his attention and he saw something large in his peripheral vision. A whip-like appendage soared towards him, the tip razor sharp to use as a piercing weapon for any creature it snagged on. Luckily for him, it only made it to the side of his cheek before it snapped away suddenly.
He peered over to see it’s host body, pummeled into the ground by a bare-footed, half sized Amaurotine with pink hair and fierce pink eyes that blended in well with the red consuming her sclera. The air fizzed, static heating up the area as what seemed like lightening curled over her form, sending shock waves and denting the ground into the size of a small crater.
Flesh squished between her toes as her weight crushed the monster, making sure to give a few extra points of muscle in her legs just in case. When there was no movement, Persephone took a deep sigh and the charged air around her dissipated, her eyes changing back to normal.
He continued to stare, frozen in place and unable to summon his voice, but managed to make a step towards her. She looked like her normal self despite her clothing being torn in various places and the bags underneath her eyes. But other than those peculiar features she was fine; in fact, there wasn’t a scratch on her as far as he could tell.
“Persephone…” Finally he found his voice, though it was more like a whisper when he desired to call to her. Not that it mattered, she noticed him right away and that smile he had loved shown itself on her face.
“Hades! Are you okay?” She asked, jumping down with ease after staggering once. “You didn’t get hurt by that thing did you?”
It took him a moment before he managed to give a signature quirk of the brow; him getting hurt? “Me? Hurt? Persephone, might I remind you that I’m one of the Convocation? ‘Tis nothing but a scratch at most I assure you.” He paused. “Though I suppose your timely arrival did save me an inconvenience. Bravo, hero!”
Ah there it was, the dramatic arrogance that she was so used to. It was nice to know that he seemed to be okay... still—
“Don’t patronize me! This is a serious situation right now!” Persephone narrowed her eyes, wondering exactly what it would take for Hades not to be a teasing bastard if not the end of the world.
“I am being serious, my dear Persephone, though it is not I you should be worrying about.” He took a slow step forward, eyes gazing down at her, back hunched and arms behind said backside as if he were analyzing her. “You look far worse for wear, how long have you been here fighting off those things?” He asked, gaze a bit more accusatory than she would have liked, Persephone really didn’t need him to try and guilt trip her from her own decisions.
“I’m fine. Do you see any wounds or scratches? No? Then you can stop acting like I can’t take care of myself.” In her heart she knew that he was just worried, but even at the end of the world people seemed to treat her as if she were a child, even with this gift of strength she had been given.
She couldn’t understand and she really, really hated it.
“Anyway, we need to—” Persephone half turned, ready to move on from the subject when another appendage came out of nowhere and pierced right through her shoulder. “Oh fuck that hurts!” She growled before grabbing the appendage and ripping it out of her shoulder, doing her best to ignore the pain and blood gushing from the wound. Instead she focused her attention on the monster which was a near identical to the one she just killed, just way smaller; an easy kill.
Wrapping the appendage around her hand and gripping it with her Olympian strength, she pulled it towards her and subsequently punched it so hard that most of the organic flesh within splattered out and oozed onto the ground, killing it instantly.
She touched her shoulder lightly, but couldn’t even breathe a sigh of relief before Hades grasped at her. “Tsk, tsk, still reckless as ever I see, you should be more careful hero." He said before his hand reached out for her shoulder, but Persephone took his wrist, shaking her head.
“Hades, its fine—” she started to say, but the tightening grip on her arm and the look he gave her signaled a defiance of whatever it was she was going to say. But she wasn’t going to back down either. “Don’t— look, just watch.” She said as her eyes directed to her shoulder as it started glowing, the wound closing on its own.
Hades peered closer, eyes squinting and even touching where had been moments before. There wasn’t even a scar or any sign that there had been a wound there at all, save for where her clothes were torn. “See? I’m okay, my wounds heal up on their own.” She was smiling as always, but he could tell she was strained. Her skin was lackluster compared that beautiful bronze he loved to kiss and touch and her eyes had lost some of the fire that completely enamored him.
Persephone’s expression then changed, as if she had just remembered something. Her eyes darted around, scanning the area but frowned when she didn’t see what she was looking for.
“Hades...Where’s Daeus…?” She asked, a concerned look over taking her features as she looked back to him.
Hades felt his entire body grow cold, the pit in his stomach threatening to tear him apart from the inside.
“Save your energy Hades… it’s far too late for me…” Hythlodaes’ voice was still as soft and calm as ever, though the shallow breath was a good indication that the Amaurotine was close to death. His friend put a weak hand on his shoulder in some vain attempt to give comfort. “It would be in bad taste… to die for another who is slated to pass on. There… there are others waiting for you.”
Others. Others. What others could there be—
Hades’ heart nearly stopped when he realized what he was about to say out loud. His lips trembled as he attempted to get a hold of his own mind and banish the overzealous thoughts and feelings bursting at the seams. He was supposed to be more composed than this, more in control of his emotions, but he was falling apart. His planet was dying, his friends were dying, his people were dying. Everyone was dying and there wasn’t a thing he could do about. Even such a powerful sorcerer as he was helpless in this situation and such despair could only hasten the panic overtaking his mind.
A slight grip on his shoulder planted Hades back into reality and he looked over to Daes. In his other hand was a piece of parchment. “This is… a letter from Fandaniel— to Kore… before she… died. She’s… probably there… at the garden. Go to her… quickly now. You won’t want to lose her too… You are…hope… both of you…” the last of his energy and his dear friend slumped over, his soul finally flickering away.
How was he to tell her about that? That even as powerful as he was, he failed to save him?
“Persephone—”
“He’s dead, isn’t he?” Her tone of voice, usually warm and energetic, was cold and rather distant; it caught him off guard. He looked at her, seeing her eyes go to the floor, her attempt to stop her mouth from quivering by biting down on it. “I should have known... he… he was supposed to be here by now… dammit.” Her clenched fists shook, her mind wandering the ‘what ifs’ the ‘should have beens’ if she hadn’t just stood there and waited for Daeus to come to her. She should have went to him. She should have been able to save him when he was hurt. She should have--
Before Persephone could finish her thoughts, Hades was already embracing her, the tip of his nose nuzzling into her hair, his soul emerging and caressing hers in a way that sought to give comfort. “Hades… I… I should have been there for him…”
“Hush now, we’ll have none of that,” he cooed “He was at peace when he passed, I made sure of it. When all of this is over, we will summon Zodiark again and He will be able to revive all of our loved ones back, I promise.” He squeezed her lightly, trying his best to give her some comfort, to let her know that all wasn’t for naught, that there was hope. Their people could live again, rebuild again, it would just take some time.
Yet, despite his confidence, Persephone was not comforted nor was she given any hope that such a being such as He would be able to bring back the dead. Her mother was convinced the god had no intention of doing so and Persephone was prone to believe it as well. Zodiark was powerful, that could not be disputed, but he was never meant to bring back the dead, all he wanted was more energy, more aether, more sacrifices. His hunger seemed insatiable and she feared that it WAS.
“Trust me, Persephone, things will return to normal.” He assured her, as if he read her thoughts. As if it were so easy to believe. As if everything that has happened in the last few days, weeks, months would disappear from their minds and never be mentioned again. No, there was no going back from this, there was no washing this pain and agony away even if things returned to normal. Nothing would be normal again, not with what they knew now; what she knew now.
“We should go,” she said, wiping her eyes and backing away from his arms. “Our world is being torn apart and if we don’t leave now we won’t find mother’s sanctuary—” Before she could finish, Persephone heard something crack before a foreign object made an impact within her chest cavity. At first she froze, eyes wide, slowly blinking before she looked down and saw a hook-like appendage sticking out of her chest. “Oh.”
Another crack boomed behind her and Persephone was pulled back at an alarming rate, her body being thrown against a wall once, twice, three times, leaving her quite bruised. Her hand gripped at the hook to try and get it out, but severe pain coupled with being thrashed around made it difficult. She started to feel dizzy, her ears ringing from being slammed over and over again as her headache started to pound merciless against her skull. She could feel blood pouring from her head over her eye now and her vision was rapidly declining.
“Scurry and Scatter!” As sudden did Hades call out did she feel her body fall to the floor, the limb holding her now detached from the body. The impact to the ground, while being a short distance from where she had fallen, sent sharp pains through her chest. Her ribs pressed against the hook, making it sink deeper into her flesh and letting more blood spill onto the ground. She was feeling light headed, but until the monster was killed, there was no way she was going to let herself die, not like this.
Hear… Feel… Think…
For a moment she heard her mother’s voice; calm, encouraging and wise as it always had been, echoing through her body, giving her strength she didn’t know she had and she actually managed to prop herself up on one knee. With one eye open, Persephone turned her head to where she had heard the battle pressing on.
Standing tall, confident and wholly arrogant, Hades was always one to show off the power he wielded, especially when he had an audience. But this wasn’t him, this was a Hades filled with rage; eyes constricted, mouth in a snarl and magic so wild it lashed out with reckless abandon; he was angry— no livid. A rare sight to see and Persephone would be a liar if she said it didn’t terrify her a small bit. But within that anger, while his head was clouded of thoughts of protecting her, protecting what was his, protecting what he had left, he did not realize just how much danger he was in.
Even now she could see his ragged breath, his blurry eyes, his staggering legs. How he was standing when he was exhausting himself was beyond her, but she had to put a stop to it, and the only way to do that was to kill the monster before it ended up killing him or he ended up killing himself.
Suddenly she had energy again. The aether within her body manifesting itself, humming and crackling to the rhythm of her determination as her muscles gained back their strength. She took a hand and gripped the remaining talon in her chest and ripping it out with such vigor that a chunk of flesh still clung to it. She could feel her chest burn and in her haste to remove it she coughed out more blood and fluid, but even with her own constricted breath her eyes laid on her prey.
Persephone was on it in a matter of moments, talon in hand and, using her herculean strength, shoved it straight into its head, cracking through the skull and embedding it into its cranium. The creature made one last howl before it eventually stopped moving entirely.
The air became still, the only sound being their ragged breaths. She gave a long, drawn out sigh of relief; it was over, it was finally over—
Or so she thought, but as the monster lay dying, twitching as the last of its life sucked away back into the aether, it did one last push, one last act of violence and stabbed her with every hook it had. Blood poured from every wound profusely, spilling upon the ground and flowing into the cracks of the floor like a river styx. Her breath became still, her lung caught in her throat, unable to make a sound other than a pathetic squeal as she fell. As she collapsed she could hear someone calling her name and her glazed eyes focused on he who called for her, who loved her, who would mourn for her.
Hades...
Hades had been frozen utterly, his words caught in his throat as his Persephone, as strong as she was, fell to the final attack by that monster. The world was eerily silent, his breathing the only thing he could hear other than the loud beating of his heart. He felt it again, pits of despair sending cold fires into his stomach, panic wrecking havoc and chaos in his mind, legs refusing to move as another one, as the one he loved the most fell to her knees.
When she finally landed on the ground he managed to get the energy to move again, rushing to her side, trying not to collapse himself as he gently picked up her body. He attempted to remove the hooks from her body, but as sudden as he got the energy to move it was gone again, leaving him heavy and unable to support himself as the pain from the battle came into effect. His lumbering limbs, his stinging, open wounds provided by some of the hooks that were still latched onto his flesh, his lack of ability to breathe properly. He felt like he was being strangled, that death was there, squeezing at his neck, sucking out the last of his life as his soul would be transported to the life after death.
With the last of his energy, Hades managed to pull the remaining hooks out from his body in an attempt to alleviate some of the pain, throwing them lazily on the floor. He began closing his eyes, clutching onto Persephone’s body, holding her close as he embraced the hold death had on them, the idea of both of them passing on together bringing him a sense of peace.
Yet, from within his arms she moved, her eyes fluttering open, though it was easy to tell she was straining herself to keep them so. Her arm was heavy, but she managed to lift it, touching his face, rousing him from the start of his deep slumber, rubbing his cheek with her thumb. When he opened his own to peer down at her, she gave that grin that filled his heart with light and love, though it was tremendously weaker.
“Perseph..one…”
He started to speak, but a finger to his lips stopped him. Slowly she lifted herself up, moving both hands to hold his face, leaning into his slouched form and kissing him softly. At first he stiffened up, but it only took a moment for his body to relax, closing his eyes as he felt her soul wrap around his body, giving him comfort and love in their final moments together. Warmth enveloped his body, his mind feeling at ease, rested as the weight of his limbs lifted and the pain of his wounds dissipated.
You are strong, stronger than I could ever hope to be. It can only be you.You must not die, not yet.
His eyes shot open as he heard her words through his mind and before him he saw the life from her body slowly draining, pouring it into his own.
Persephone— Kore stop! He commanded, trying to push her away, but her grip was fierce, refusing to budge as she continued.
This is a gift to you, my beloved Hades; a gift of life.
He was screaming. He was screaming and thrashing and begging and pleading as waves of despair washed over him, the pit of his stomach churning and churning, threatening to rip itself apart. He didn’t want this. He didn’t want this gift. Take it back. Take it back. Take it back take it back take it back TAKE IT BACK TAKE IT BACK TAKE IT BACK—
But she never did; she continued on, her tears mixing with his as the warmth of her lips faded and her body grew cold.
Remember us. Remember that we once lived.

Miss Lyn, how do you handle 4 characters?! I have 2 and its a struggle lol
I really don’t, lol. At least, I don’t try keeping them all current with content.
I play through MSQ on Dark Autumn first. She’s my darling first character. Also running through on her lets me just vibe with MSQ as it unfolds and figure out WTF is going on and react to it myself in that moment. I don’t worry too much how it affects my fics yet; some ideas percolate, but overall I just focus on the story actually being told by the game.
Going through it again on Aeryn a little later lets me be a bit more objective and determine how it affects her, anything I need to change to make sense for her (or in general), and so on.
Then I tend to go back and forth on Dark & Aeryn for a bit until they’re both geared; depending on mood, I might alternate them each day, or each week. Once they’re geared up on their main jobs, I pick one of them and start leveling their alt jobs and doing side content. Right now, I am focusing this patch on Aeryn and getting all her jobs up.
Once that’s done—and there are a few more options!—I’ll worry about Dark’s crafts and alt jobs, when all Aeryn has left is current content as it releases, or random old stuff I wanna do (like finish the HW relic story). Aeryn’s the only one I’m going to worry about current relic grinds for too. But I can’t just do that many job grinds back to back, I need a break! There’s no rush, since Aeryn can craft things.
Also, I’ve decided at this point Aeryn is the designated Collector of Things. Others get pets, mounts, orchestrions, etc as convenient.
Later in the patch cycle, with the main 2 ladies caught up, I’ll get back to leveling up C’oretta; she’s poised to start 5.4, so I’ll be able to knock out the entire Endwalker story on her once more and likely, having had time to chew on things, hear dev talk, and it being a 3rd playthrough, I’ll notice things I missed, remember things I forgot/overlooked, rethink a few other things, and simply enjoy the story again. Then I’ll likely just focus on her main job for gearing (with crafted items) and any alt jobs as mood and time strike me.
Iyna’s still in Stormblood, so lots to still do on her, but I’m not fussed about it. As time and energy permit. Screenshots of her in Terncliff for a prompt response story were done with crime tools. I also don’t feel bad buying boosts and skips on Iyna and C’oretta, as I’ve done all the content on Aeryn and Dark already.
Iyna and C’oretta function as supporting characters and can appear whenever and whereever in fic. I have a rough idea of what they’re doing during Shadowbringers and Endwalker as Aeryn’s doing WoL things (where the other 3 chars are during Garlemald, the Moon, the Final Days, while the Scions are in Ultima Thule, are all things I’ve considered) but actually having them leveled up and current isn’t necessary for that.
In WoW it was expected, somewhat necessary, and honestly built to have multiple alts to do content with, since each character can only be 1 job. Alts on the same account in WoW share a lot of things, like pet and mount collections. FFXIV is far less alt friendly as the expectation is to do things on 1 Warrior of Light. Maybe an alt or two to play with friends on different worlds/data centers, but the intent is a focus on a main WoL.
I only made alts to replay content before New Game+, because I like character creation, and that writer and roleplayer part of me likes having character ideas and figuring out their stories. But I’m not going to keep multiple characters raid ready on all jobs; power to those who have the time, energy, and focus to do that, but it’s also not necessary for writing fic or even most roleplay.
Pick what seems fun for now—leveling a main’s jobs, replaying MSQ, catching up a relic—on whatever character strikes your fancy, alternate when you wish, and don’t sweat it if they aren’t tome capped each week and fully geared on all jobs by the next patch drop. This is a game played for fun, after all.
