Homestuck Mythical Creature au / Cryptid Au

Johns a pooka, an irish fae trickster who shapeshifts into animals. his favorite form is the bunny. john and jane are both fae, so their pranks range from harmless to mentally scaring to life altering. absolute chaos grimlins. dirk is also an irish myth, so he knows them well and is often trying to get them to not ruin the local population of humans. so they do pranks on him insted. john loves to steal dirks head and hide it places.

rose speaks to the eldritch horrors and is slowly becoming one herself. she wants to become a litch.

Dave is a harpy! a very chill one who doesn't tend to sing with his full chest, so people dont start crashing into his doorstep. dave dies in some magic accident that caused davesprite to rise up from the ashes. but dave harpy is ALSO fine no ones really sure how. may have been roses doing.

Jade is a werewolf obv. but shes also a witch and has formed a coven with rose and roxy.

Jane is ur avrage fae faerie/sprite. her favorite fae rule to get people to break is "dont eat their food."

Roxy is both a cat who is also a wizard i need not elaborate

Dirk is a headless horseman. not to be confused with THE headless horse man. thats another dullhan with a well paying halloween gig. dirk is often subject to losing his head, so he made a magic pumpkin to pilot the body when this happens. he does have a very large and scary but beautiful horse.

Jake is the bigfoot. and one of the most well hunted (and well travled) cryptids. thus, his friends often make jokes of not ever seeing him except in blurry images. its not his fault hes very large and loves to travel! and is also not very photogenic...

Aradia is a monthra!!! however she made a deal with a devil and became a ghost... not sure WHY yet or why it kills her. but it does. its all in her plan or smth, but that doesnt stop sollux from being very upset that hes the one that has to take and keep her soul. she is reserected later by the coven, still soulless but it doesnt matter bc her soul is in good hands and thus she still feels it. shes much happier now.

Tavros is a minotar self explanatory he is a small minotar, tho. a mini minotar if u will.

Sollux is ur run of the mill soul for potato chip demon. an excuse to give him twin tails and horns. him an kitkat gave me the most trouble! but then i went with a solkat devil angel motifi and im kinda attached t9 it now. even if its sorta a cop out. i simply couldnt find twin creatures that werent gods or children of gods. nor any crab creatures...

Karkat is an angel. he WAS human notably he was human for awhile even good friends with kanaya before he died. he never found love but helped so many with theres that he became an angel that was a lot like cupid. thus he was a small angel incharge of match making and also likened to a baby and hes very much NOT happy about this. it pisses him off, solluxs often gives him a hard time. about it. (extra angst is that kitkats also really fucked up about never knowing what love felt like but having to give it to others. and he has it in his head that that means he never will know, bc no ones matchmaking the matchmaker. but theres a song he hears everyonece anwhile by a stray harpy that makes him feel a lot lighter.)

Nepeta is my go to cat creature a nekomata. a two tailed cat yokai.

Kanaya is a vampire. obviously.

Terezi is a dragon! still blind! still licks. but can now transform and has wings, very scary. shes basiclly just her lusus lmao.

Vriska is a spider lady. i have arachne here bc its similar, but shes not arachne the myth proper. shes just a spider with the top part of a woman at the head. A Jorogumo a spider lady yokai and is basically actually what im picturing.

Equius is a centar and fuck if i ever have to draw him....

Gamzee is a clowwwn, just a clown, just a silly lil guy. What do you MEAN clowns arnt mythical creatures??? what do u mean u saw him under ur bed when you were a child? u must be mistaken. as a nod to ICPs boogieman. when gamzee is not high as a kite and is just a clown, he is one of the most terrifying and unkillable creatures known to children kind.

Eridan is a selkie. basiclly a mermaid but part seal. personally, I'd like to make him part seahorse. but not in the hippocampus way. i chose this bc he can shapeshift, thus he pretends to be a high elf sorcerer, yes he does get dunked on about this.

And finally, Feferi is a siren! who happens to be able to become very VERY **VERY** BIG. she doesnt lure people to drown them but she DOES love to keep live captives in cages :)

5. Do you respond to comments?

not typically, theres some weird thing with my head where i kind of hate that it counts my comments in the total comment amount. i cant explain it i just dont like how it looks, plus just repeating variations of "thank you!!" feels hollow after a while. im more likely to answer direct questions about the story rather than general commentary i do love talking about my thought process and intentions

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

ok so i cant actually tell you this because none of those fics are Done yet but all you need to know is that i consider all of my TLT fics tragedies to some extent. take that as you will. i dont even Like the word angst really it portends a level of melodrama id like to avoid

I'd say its a dead tie between A Brief Lesson In The Occult and Shit. Let’s Build A Fort. i can barely look at these anymore and if you read them and feel compelled to tell me you like them: dont. i can do better now

8. Do you get hate on fics?

never to my knowledge has anyone ever publicly disliked one of my fics. in fact sometimes i dream about someone posting it in their discord group chat and making fun of it because im so curious about what theyd say

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

yes i have. i do it almost exclusively as satire or character analysis as i find like, the physicality of sex to be inherently kind of goofy. liek the second you have to describe a dick or boobs with words the magic is gone it just becomes weird silly looking flesh. so i like focusing on weird and bad sex, unsatisfying or clumsy sex. sex that changes you in no significant way

10. Do you write crossovers?

yes i have. A Brief Disappearance and Statement of David Wong are both TMA/JDATE crossovers and i DID write a homestuck/TMA crossover but its not on my ao3 i guess? odd

shiiiiiiite uh. jade/davepeta still means a lot to me. i think there are a lot of really engaging ships in TLT but i always kind of default to griddlehark i just kind of understand them the best

eventually SAM and i would like to circle back to our fanventure Therapystuck but we both got really busy with school, work and a general lull in the HS fandom. also maybe someday ill go back to Insert Jesus Allegory Here i liked the direction of the story i just have to get myself back in that headspace. being into homestuck Does something to you, like psychologically

16. What are your writing strengths?

after asking some friends theyve told me im good at tone, prose, funny metaphors, and dialogue but a caveat for the last thing as "I have yet to see how your Own guys talk and how you'd handle distinct voices from scratch so I'm only giving you about 80%"

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

i hate like. writing Around the important bits of a scene. i love the physicality of characters and what it reveals about them, along with pieces of the scene the narration deems important or interesting enough to mention to the audience. but im always worried im jsut fucking yapping. also i hate like, political scenes theres a rhythm to them that i dont quite understand. people sitting around using specific language that Feels important in a way that doesnt make it clear im bullshitting like 99% of what theyre talking about

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

AHAH. GOD. i actually looked this up the other day because theres an original story i want to write where i want to make it clear theyre basically speaking french the whole time, even though its written in english. i only speak english (i took some french in hs, its left me though i want to pick it up again) so i wouldnt know anything about how it reads to polyglots but i guess theres really only so much you can do outside of literally learning a new language just to write a story for free. ive seen a whole host of tips so i gues sit just matters how you employ them

Homestuck. my only regret is that i wasnt a better writer

I have tried to read Homestuck like 4 times and i cant get past the begining so I'm just gonna read the fanfics and absorb the plot that way. It's actually quite fun to try and disect what's common fanon and what's actually canon. Anyways, this is also a request for good Homestuck fanfics that someone who hasn't read the comic could read and enjoy (or just fics with cool worldbuilding i'm a sucker for worldbuilding)

LOVE LETTERS IN DIGITAL INK - secret identity shenanigans with rose and kanaya. rose runs a blog where she talks about her huge crush on the new next door neighbor. she does not know said neighbor follows that blog and has had a celebrity crush on her for forever.

FREE KARKAT (NO SERIOUSLY HE'S ASKING NICELY) - i just think its cute. trolls are mermaids au, the strilondes all live together, includes dave going through a sexuality crisis and karkat going through a quadrant crisis, as all davekat should.

THIRTEEN AND A HALF MIXTAPES - really cute human au with a mystery and a road trip scavenger hunt! karkat steals into the city with his friend nepeta to fulfill the mixtape mystery tradition. they make lots of friends who join their journey along the way, and supposedly the guy at the end of the mixtapes wants to meet karkat really badly.

DOC SCRATCH'S SCHOOL FOR SUPERNATURALLY GIFTED ADOLESCENTS - superpowered kid school au. not much more even needs to be said about this. it's pretty fun and very cute though, and the story itself is pretty brilliant.

ALTERNATE UNIVERSE - magic school! only the magic is science and every mythological creature is real and demons are on earth. this is like if percy jackson and simon snow fused and tried really hard to masquerade as a college au. i just finished this fic and i absolutely loved it.

DAYVHE'S BROKEN DIAMOND CLUB - instead of being all-human this one is all-troll! if you want to know anything about trolls this fic is fucking good for that (although if you dont already know shit about trolls it might take a sec to pick up). this fic just Keeps Going but i promise its so fun and so worth it.

DETECTIVE PONY - the most well done dirk strider character study ever written. this fic also got canonized by the homestuck crew later. the basic premise of this story is that it is a gift written by dirk strider for his friend jane on her birthday-- he is modifying the preexisting novel pony pals detective pony. explanation of that here. it's a fantastic read.

THE FOOTSTEPS - i read this one years ago and it made me sob a lot. i should disclaim that the main character was actually a piece of shit in canon so this is very much an au.

first off insert jesus allegory here by quinn @/thatneoncrisis is honest to god one of my favorite solkat fics i have that shit in my brain 24/7 its essentially a pesterquest continuation if karkat took sollux up on his offer to help and it gets really sweet and kind of gay lmao

what kind of asshole drives a lotus? makes me cry on the daily theres something about this writing style that makes me shed tears on the sheer tenderness and intimacy of it all PLUS it has enemies/friends/lovers AND fake relationship ugh its so good

kindling by measure by @/acedavestrider makes me SO happy it has god karkat and mortal dave and such aus always make me scared because what if one of them dies!! one is a god!! but i think this fic alone made me adore the concept the worldbuilding and pacing are absolutely beautiful and god the slowburn. you will not be disappointed

dewshi has a couple GREAT davekat fics continuing rn for you to check out lmao my personal favorite is a little dark, a little gloomy, and as always, full of dead people which. oh god how do i describe it its really sad at first but it gets so good later on its ghost karkat im a;kfdadsklfjasld its good!!! its so gd good and theres also boreas and im only reccing this because every fucking chapter made me cry and sometimes you have to get. some feelings out okay ive read a lot of books and so many of them never really strike me when they write about grief and whether you attribute that to my having known 5 people who died and my overall desensitization to that or just me being kind of an insensitive asshole idk thats really up to you im just saying this fic captures that feeling really well for me

EXTENDED CUT that i wrote a while back about anhema and how she has 3 dads: one of which she calls her dad, the other she wants to be her dad, and the other disowned both ways in favor of not caring about it (anhema cares about it. she cares a lot)

if sollux was like. living somewhere else and it Was just anhema and dadkat in one house shed be a lot better off but seeing as sollux and karkat are just. weirdly awfully close and like in an 8 year committed(??) relationship he like. Does live with them and 1) thats why anh likes to go outside a lot like theres a difference between hanging out and chilling in mostly silence w your friends versus being in a presence w some dude who ignores you in favor of playing minecraft  2) she kind of has this inferiority "gotta earn it" complex. like the occasional times sollux has interacted with her were basically a Sparknotes: What You Missed and the Even Fewer times theyve interacted positively were when anhema manages to share an interest w sollux that she can compete up to him with otherwise hed just diss her. so she develops this whole complex of If I Want To Be Known I Need To Earn It which THEN explains why shes like this kismesis/moirail heartthrob bc she 1) has Issues and 2) lets herself be Known by competing up w other people which rightfully pisses them off but backs off at the last second bc shes not up for that trust

anyway she LOVES dave real sweet dude. super affectionate and funny. will tell them good morning! i couldnt cook breakfast and then theyd try to help him and she wants dave to be her dad so much because davekat is STILL pining after all this time sdka;jflkadsads

theres a crossover here with quinn @/thatneoncrisiss descendantstuck au where anhema manages to see and cross between timelines and finds themself in an au where davekat Is a happy family and she loves it but eventually has to go back to her own timeline.

 note here that my tl anhemaquest is basically what happens when i try to make everyone as distressed as possible while also intrigued
