TL;DR - The Biolizard didn't mean to destroy the Earth. It only wanted to return home.

Biolizard has the mind of a beast, right? Not near as sentient as Sonic or Shadow. At least that's what we're told. I understand any living creature, regardless of sentience, can learn to be hostile towards anything it associates with pain. But... why would the Biolizard associate the Earth with pain? Biolizard is FROM the earth and that's the last place it was before it was subject to inhumane experiments.

I don't see something as bestial as the Biolizard piecing the logic together: "These people hurting me are from the Earth. And therefore I hate them and the Earth." Again, the Biolizard itself is from Earth and wasn't tortured until it was taken away. Just like how a dog doesn't know what country it's in but can still tell when they're in a different place, Biolizard would know it's in a different environment but wouldn't have the reasoning to figure anyone the on arc is also from Earth. Biolizard wasn't exposed to any of the scientists until it was on the Ark. It just wouldn't have the spatial reasoning to put that together.

All that being said, I think it makes more sense that the Biolizard simply wanted to go back home.

Again, it wouldn't have the spatial reasoning to figure the people experimenting on him from the Ark must also be from the Earth if the Biolizard is as simple-minded as we're told that it is. As far as it would be concerned, the Ark and the scientists were always there. And again, the last time it was on Earth, Biolizard's natural-born home, was the last time it was free from pain, exploitation, and imprisonment. Literally why would it hate the earth?

And in its state - consumed with unimaginable levels of pain and lashing out on everything and anything based on pure instinct to survive/protect itself from further harm - would it really be able to reason, "The way in which I'm trying to return to my home, the last place I've known peace, is going to destroy it"?

Kind of Rambling Beyond This Point

We have no way of knowing how sentient the Biolizard was or wasn't.

In real life, salamanders of all kinds do not have vocal cords. Regardless of what it was or wasn't aware of, it couldn't communicate with anyone anyway.

Given that the Biolizard wouldn't have vocal cords to make sounds, how does it roar? Take a very deep breath and exhale as hard as you can with your mouth wide open. And then use sci-fi logic and try to reason out the acoustics of its windpipe or smth, idk. The point is, the Biolizard wouldn't be capable of speech.

Some people think that the fact that it could use Chaos Control suggests that it might be more aware than most of the fandom seems to give it credit for. I'm not sure where I sit on this, but I'm not opposed to the idea. But even with that in mind, there's still no logical reason it would hate the earth.

It makes sense for Shadow to hate the Earth. Shadow's never been to the Earth before GUN raided the Ark. His only connection is that he cherishes it because Maria does. The Ark is Shadow's test tube born home. From his perspective, people came from the Earth to destroy the Ark and all his loved ones on it. HE has a reason to hate the Earth, the Biolizard doesn't.

The only way it would make sense to me that the Biolizard hated/wanted to destroy the earth is if the Biolizard was a "lab lizard"(?) similar to the concept of lab rats. If Biolizard started off as a lab lizard and has only known human exploitation all its life before and after the Ark, then maybe it could be trying to kill two birds with one stone. "I destroy the Ark and the Earth at the same time by making them collide and I finally get the death I've been denied over 50 years in the process."

We don't know where bb!Bio was sourced from. Science facilities generally want to deal with animals that are accustomed to captivity with a predictable baseline, so the last paragraph is kind of plausible.

But here's the thing, we don't know whether that's the case. It's only speculation.

ok, let me tell you a story

it is 1991, the soviet union is about to fall. it creates a huge chaos, but also starts a hopeful period of around ~10 years where seemingly modern russia was going towards being fully democratic. due to this events, a lot of secret kgb files are starting to get declassified, a lot of information seeing the light of day for the first time since events it was concerning.

however what it also means was full blown capitalism slowly finding its way to russia, causing a lot of things, but importantly to us, developement of commercial tv. tv, to up until then, was generally regarded as trustworthy source of information. but to keep afloat, these new, commercial channels needed something exciting, new, enticing. so a lot of them started to broadcast highly sensational, often nonsense programmes, including a lot of "historical" conspiracy. importantly for us, among them was a broadcast about the death of yesenin. you know, the poet.

fortunately or not, there was this man, Sergey Kuryokhin (сергей курёхин), a musician, director, actor and also, importantly for us, a fan of yesenin, who felt, that aformentioned broadcast was a desecration of the poet's memory. kuryokhin decided, that something had to be done. fortunately, he had a friend, also called Sergey (Sholokhov)(сергей шолохов), a tv journalist.

and so they did. kuryokhin was introduced as a journalist, scientist and political activist, who just got back from mexico, where he was studying acoustic properties of mushrooms. and you know, mushrooms are weird. they arent plants, but neither they are animals and certainly not phalluses lost by someone in the forest (sic!). however, curiously, their acoustic properties are the same as those of an untouchable, unvisible radiowave... so, if you simplify a little bit, mushrooms are essentially radiowaves [i will provide additional context in square brackets, for instance, i am in stem and have no fucking idea what "acoustic properties of mushrooms" may even mean and no, mushrooms are not, in fact, radiowaves]

as everybody knows, mushroom posses their own personality and obviously, as is common knowledge, the personality of a mushroom is much much stronger than this of a human being. in turn, if someone is really fond od mushrooms and eats them a lot, mushroom personality slowly pushes out and replaces the human one. to simplify, the person slowly becomes a mushroom (and thus, a radiowave). [this is fully made up]

now, kuryokhin had undisputable proof, that lenin (and those closest to him) LOVED mushrooms and devoured them almost daily. which means, that he was a mushroom (and a radiowave).

hey, i've been reading your Cisco-related Flash fics, and what struck to me as impressive is how you implement the mentions of tech so well. i've run into trouble into writing scenes, where Cisco might have to tinker. 🤧🤧🤧 i know this is by a long-shot, however, do you have any writing advice on how to add tech as part of a scene??? or like wording on how tinkering works?? idk just basic tech stuff i guess. thank you and sending good ~~vibes~~ your way!

Cisco tinkering is definitely fun to write, but I'm not exactly sure how to describe my process for writing those scenes. But I'll give it a shot anyway.

So Cisco's tinkering with tech in fics usually fits one of two scenarios when I'm writing. Either it's to give him something to do in the scene since Cisco's definitely someone who likes to keep his hands busy. Or it's a specific tech I plan to use for plot reasons, so it gets threaded throughout the fic. That way Cisco's brilliant ideas to save the day don't come out of nowhere.

If its the former, then I'll usually just pick something we know he's worked on in the show. The quickly forgotten Boot Tech (how useful it would have been if perfected instead of forgotten after the S2 finale), updates on the suppressant tech (the cuffs, Caitlin's snowflake necklace), the weather wand... I don't really have to go too much into detail on it, but it can be fun to poke at canon a bit for all the things Cisco develops that never show up again once their original use in the plot is over. Sometimes I just have him working towards perfecting something that didn't work as expected. Other times I have ideas for alternative uses for the tech that can be fun to mention.

I've also been a Star Trek and Stargate fan for a long, long time. So I've learned technobabble from the two scifi series that did it best. ^_^

Though, really, watching Sam Carter (SG-1) and Rodney McKay (Stargate: Atlantis) spout technobabble is a great way to learn how to make made up science blend with real science to sound relatively believable. Stargate (SG-1 particularly) was pretty good about grounding their made up science in real world concepts. Definitely having obsessively watched those two shows has helped shape how I write Cisco now that I'm in the Arrow verse fandom.

When I have Cisco's tech being used in a specific way for plot reasons, however, I definitely have to know ahead of time what the tech is for. If I'm going to make, say, the Rainbow Raider the villain of a story and have him experimenting with new applications of his powers - messing with emotions other than anger - then I'd have Cisco pull out the device they originally used to combat Rainbow Raider's powers to work on upgrading for the new scenario. That way it still works when they need it. Then I can throw in things like, maybe it gets pulled out of mothballs and immediately tried on one of RR's victims but it doesn't work. Cue drama. :D

I think some of the development process I put in there comes from what I know about tech development from a software side of things. Since I'm a software engineer, I know how different types of design and development models work. Waterfall vs agile vs... anyway, I won't necessarily ever name the dev model being used, but it'll influence how I write Cisco's development process and it'll differ based on when he's working with a team, vs one other person, vs on his own.

Having Cisco collaborate is especially fun to do. Cisco starts off as a particularly brilliant mechanical engineer and by the time he leaves the show he's become very much a multi-discipline scientist. He does so because he learns so much from the people he collaborates with - or competes with, as the case may be. Cisco's knowledge of sonic technology and acoustical engineering improves due to his exposure to Hartley's Pied Piper gear. He learns bio engineering from his many collaborations with Caitlin. Harry being rather multi-disciplined himself, often pushes Cisco to have more confidence in himself and reach beyond his comfort zone.

So I'll pick who he's collaborating on based both on when I want a story to be set, how AU I want it to be (Hartley joins Team Flash? Harry doesn't leave post S2?), and what kind of tech is being developed for the plot (improving the amnesia inducer they used on Barry? that calls for Caitlin).

A story that I've been wanting to write is Cisco mentoring Chester while Chester creates tech that - predictably, I admit - saves Barry out on the field at the end. We never really got the mentor/mentee relationship between them expanded on the way I'd been hoping for when it became clear Chester was a permanent addition to the cast. The story hasn't happened yet because I haven't really fleshed out what the technology they're working on will be. I'm probably overthinking it a bit at this point, but I want it to reflect where Chester's at mentally during the story - his struggles with self doubt and learning to be more assertive, generally showing why Cisco felt so comfortable leaving Team Flash in Chester's hands when he eventually leaves. (So it's intended to be canon compliant and set before Cisco and Kamilla leave for Star City.)

I don't know how useful my rambles have been, but I hope this helps.

Purely weird question but what would happen if the speed of light was as slow as the speed of sound? How would that affect the average person’s reality?

***fringe science disclaimer: read at your own risk*** wave-particle duality, expansion, and the copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics are commonly accepted by most scientists who have degrees. i don’t have a degree, and i don’t personally like these things or think they’re the most accurate or helpful way to describe reality, which likely remains undiscovered, and will probably remain undiscovered forever under capitalism. 

the answer to this question is gonna be sort of like, “it would be a lot like the speed of sound.” sound is often used as an experimental metaphor for light, precisely because it’s so similar but slower. certain circumstances can create “acoustic black holes” where motion of material inwards is faster than motion of sound outwards (think of a really fast whirlpool, and the absolutely bonkers “sonic boom” it must make). sound can be said to have a theoretical fundamental particle called a “phonon” – a very small, pointlike packet of a soundwave. sound exhibits wave-particle duality, but we don’t talk about this very much because when the speed limit is more tangible and near-at-hand, it becomes pretty obviously a bad and unenlightening way to describe things. 

if you really want to overextend the metaphor there should probably be a “luminal boom” when things (gravity, neutrinos, dark matter?) exceed the speed of light. anyway, to my ex stephen from 2014 who was a physics major, fuck you for laughing at me when i said the word “superluminal.”

there’s also “cymatics,” the study of making soundwaves visible, which has been really useful to me in understanding what a wavefront really looks like. i think there was an experiment a few years ago that used sound to create pointlike particles of levitating oil, and used these, idk, macro-particles as a metaphor to describe bohmian mechanics or “pilot wave theory,” whose differences from the commonly accepted “copenhagen interpretation” of quantum mechanics are too heinously subtle to get into here, but reading about it was also very helpful to me for understanding the copenhagen interpretation, just for contrast’s sake. 

anyway, that’s not really what you’re asking, which is more like “if the speed of light was slower, what would be different?” and you’re probably either going to find my answer irritatingly pedantic or deeply unsettling, but it is “nothing would change.” we would experience everything exactly the same way, but it would be “slower” (compared to an “outside” frame of reference we can’t access). in the twin paradox (and nasa’s real twin experiment), they experienced marginally different rates of time and other relativistic effects, but they didn’t experience the time in a different way because it was relativistically warped. (in practice this is very much because the relativistic differences are too small to notice, but even if we played out a real experiment where a twin approached the speed of light, they would see the stars ahead blueshifted and the stars behind redshifted, and they would see their watch ticking at the same familiar rate of a second per second, and then they would come home to a twin that’s visibly older, who had also seen their watch tick at a second per second, but measured more ticks while they were gone than the gone twin measured.) so, i think changing the speed of light would be similar, as an experience. everything else would slow down along with it, and we wouldn’t be able to tell the difference (unless we had a twin, experiencing a different frame of reference, to compare notes with).

to some degree this is related to the idea of “dimensionless constants” – if we derive all of our other units of measurement from the speed of light, then what is the speed of light? how would you define it other than things that are defined by it? light goes 300,000 kilometers per second, what is a kilometer and what is a second? a kilometer is the distance light goes in 1/300,000th of a second, and a second is the time it takes light to go a kilometer. and this only gets worse when you start doing things like guessing the mass of distant stars based on their light. it sounds ridiculous but this is a real problem if you want to, say, gauge whether the speed of light has changed or is changing, or whether the value of mass is likewise a constant or a variable, or whether observations of expansion represent changing distance or changing mass. 

oh, no, wait, fuck, can i change my answer? if you change the speed of light to 767mph and everything else stays the same (rather than proportionally scaling down along with lightspeed), then you could do it in a racecar on the salt flats. people would be like, “there goes time traveling johnny again, say hi to him for me when you’re 80 son”

SO’S GLEE EPISODE RANKING: NO. 32

I started a Full Glee Episode Ranking between seasons 5 and 6 over two years ago now (!!!). My opinions have changed somewhat since then (retrospect is an interesting thing), and I need to include the thirteen season six episodes I neglected in my original list.  With the two year anniversary of the show being over a few months away, I thought I’d count down to by posting an episode every day.  I’ll tag using: glee episode rankings

Here we go…

32. The Break Up (4x04)

So - I flipped the order of this one with No. 30 because god, this episode fucking sucks, and I have to do three of them, and I’m going from hardest to least hardest. Wait - SO - why is it so high then?!?! Here’s my thing about this episode - I think it’s an incredibly well crafted, emotionally turbulent, and incredibly effective for what it is.  I think Ryan Murphy set out to break all of our hearts - at once - and he succeeded on an unprecedented level.  Interestingly - this is more of an objective ranking than a personal one.  I’m not a huge fan of this one - and I’ve only been back to it a handful of times. 

So - we all know what happens in this episode, but breaking it down a little...

First off, there’s the newbie stuff - which I don’t think should even been in the episode.  It wastes precious time from the heavy things that matter.  Also - Will and Emma conflict.  Seriously - if you’re going to throw them in here - give them some real conflict. 

Brittana - Man, these girls had by far the most mature break up, and I’ll admit, it’s kind of sad to watch, even if I don’t ship it.  

Finchel - This is the good stuff here, tbh.  This story is fantastically told - and maybe I can tolerate it because I’m kinda happy they are breaking up, but there’s something very real here about a couple who has meant so much to each other at one point in time, and now they are different people on different paths.  Idk - I feel like this was heartbreaking and good tv. 

Klaine - I still hate the Klaine break up.  It’s not because they’re breaking up, or because of the cheating.  I hate it because out of the three couples, they got the short end of the stick.  They got a couple of songs, one not very good scene and a metaphor for a break up.  And it pisses me off.  If you’re going to break them up, give them a goddamn real scene to do it in - don’t just drift off and leave it hanging and then next episode be like, oh yeah, not dating.  **grumbles - but saves bigger rant**  FWIW - I actually like the Loser Like Me break up stuff better (yes, I know I’m weird)

The thing though about the episode, the reason why I do have it so high, is the production.  The music in this is fantastic and so, so heartbreaking within the narrative.  It’s some of the best music, and best use of a theme in any episode ever.  It sets the tone - and the tone doesn’t let up at all - and /that/ is what makes it a heartwrenching drama - outdone only by The Quarterback.  

High Points:

Brittany and Blaine at the beginning.  My heart is already breaking for them. 

The little bits of Finn and Kurt dynamic in this episode - it’s the last time that they’re on screen together in the series, and I’m sad that it’s this episode, but I’m glad we have it. 

I can’t believe I’m going to say this - but the Finchel narrative in this episode is spot on. 

I can’t say that it’s really a high point - but Blaine and his psyche around this time - it’s so effectively heart-wrenching.  Poor bb <3

Low Points: 

The Klaine stuff is stupid.  (Okay, most of it’s not - and as an aside - there’s some really interesting stuff going on here - and the transition from fairy tale romance to real romance is really good and interesting and is an arc for the rest of the series, and years later - I’m not against a break up story, but still the execution....) 

The Jarley stuff is incredibly out of place and jarring.  It wasn’t needed for this episode. 

Why couldn’t Will and Emma break up?

The other problem I have - which isn’t really about this episode specifically, is that the follow up is unsatisfying, too... Finchel is the only one who get a hefty narrative.  Brittana is going to be ignored completely until, idk, season five, and Klaine gets to be Finchel’s kid sister - paralleling Finchel’s story, and not getting as meaty things to do - which would have made the impact of this episode more meaningful. 

Music:

Barely Breathing: Blaine and Finn are absolutely heart breaking.  Not a huge fan of this song, but I think it highlights their headspace really well.  I still wish we would have gotten more Blaine headspace, but ah well.  

Give Your Heart a Break: Okay, so Brody was kind of unnecessary here, too, but I kind of love it, tbh. 

Teenage Dream Acoustic: Fuck this song.  (Actually, this is one of my favorite songs of the show, and I love every time Darren sings the slowed down version, and his version here is perfect, so perfect and awful and amazing, and heartbreaking but still...)

Don’t Speak: You know - I hated this song when it was first on the radio.  It’s so, so damn depressing.  So yeah, let’s add Klaine breaking up to it.  (FWIW - it’s very well done between the four of them.) 

Mine: Santana is gorgeous and this song is beautiful. 

The Scientist: Fuck this song, too.  This song makes me want to cry. 

Final Verdict: This episode sucks but it sets out what it needs to do in a very effective and heartbreaking way.
