doing prompts of any day that has already past and combining as i please... tried doing it day by day but i just can't. if you can't do a daily -tober challenge, don't feel bad; i don't even have a real job and i can't keep up with this shit. plus, i feel like doing whatever the hell i want is more in the vein of being cringe, anyway.

i'm really glad there is a resurgence in 00's internet culture (though typing it out, i realize a lot of these prompts are more 2010's, though the aesthetic of the post is more 00s). it makes sense for a lot of reasons. but i think it's also worth recognizing, as someone who grew up in it, this was not some golden past, either. there is no golden past. the internet in the 00's was just as, if not more, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, generally dangerous, and overall shit as it is today. so i encourage people to create a better web and a better world!

Genderswap!Bucci Gang: 3 outfits and a Formal

Finally it’s finished!!! :D Gosh it took forever but it was well worth the challenge.

And now to say my favorites.

Of Giorno’s outfits I like the summer hat and gingham crop top, the flower clipped on is that flower from that manga panel everyone kept redrawing. Originally I wanted it to be a rose or something but I thought it would be a nice little reference. But I also like the one with the bun, it’s giving mean girls, scream queens, and Heathers energy.

Fugo’s outfits are a bit of a mixed bag but I like the puce sweater with the ripped laces. Underneath is this peter pan collar black tube top, I think she would have bought the sweater and modded it herself.

Mista’s outfits aren’t my favorite to be honest, but I do love the one with the epilogue color schemes and the sporty athletic skirt. The Garfield Mista is an homage to the meme that was started by @sboopie and @corpsoir . It couldn’t be helped at this point XD. Maybe I’ll draw a proper garfsta eventually. ^0^;;

Now one of my favorites of Narancia’s outfits I drew would have to be between the blue one and the one with the tinted sunglasses. The blue one is a reference to Narancia’s eyes of heaven colors, it offsets a lot of the abundance of orange in her wardrobe. The tinted sunglasses outfit has a sort of 90s raver feel, I always sort of headcanoned Narancia as the party animal type.

Bruno’s mom outfit is hilarious and simple, originally I had a totally different outfit but I scrapped it in favor of mom jeans. However my real favorite outfit is 100% the skirt with the white fishnets. Like Bruno’s original outfit, it has a formal office feel, and it has a more mature feel. It’s simple and really pretty!

Abbacchio’s outfits are a bit of a mixed bag, so it’s between the purple netted rope long dress and the pierced sweater short dress. The purple rope dress was more or less an extension of Abbacchio’s original design. The sweater dress on the other hand has a tube top heart boob window with a broken heart. It was semi inspired by Lilla from Spooky Month.

Finally Trish has the best outfits imo, but the best would have to be between the N’sync inspired red carpet long jacket and the air brush top. The N’Sync outfit was the first thing I thought of and originally I wanted it to be the formal outfit. This outfit screams night on the town for me, dude’s got a gold chain! Now the air brush top has 3 inspiration’s; Trish’s anime outfit, the dress with Spice girl she wore in a chapter cover, and those tacky air brush bikini tee shirt dresses that people would wear as a cover up at the beach. Other than the top, the outfit has some rebellious punkish elements with the pants and spiked boots.

My final verdict on who the best formal outfit is; Giorno’s tutu tool dress. Even though it was the hardest to line art, I love how free flowing it is!

Old Nollywood aesthetics and fashion may be considered trendy today, but the films were not always so well-regarded. In the 90s and early 2000s, when these movies were made and watched in parlours across Nigerian homes as they were shot, straight-to-video, they were considered as bad entertainment, or ‘low culture’. To watch and enjoy Nollywood films was to celebrate mediocrity. But today, nostalgic young Millennials and Gen Zers are overlooking the jarring audio, grainy pictures, and sometimes hammy acting, to appreciate not only the grooming and style of the actors, but the original and diverse stories that reflect unique Nigerian experiences.

It was for this reason that sisters Tochi and Ebele Anueyiagu started Nolly Babes, a nostalgic Instagram account dedicated to celebrating the cinematic period’s women. Started in December 2017, their first post was of Nollywood’s biggest star Genevieve Nnaji; a still taken from 2004 film Sharon Stone In Abuja, directed by Adim Williams. Nnaji plays the titular character, a sexually liberated young woman who uses her beauty and charm to ensnare unassuming men into doing her bidding.

The account is an ode to the female characters of old Nollywood who were often portrayed as warning examples. The storylines were steeped in moral principles rooted in the patriarchal culture and the dominant Christian religion of Southern Nigeria. A large number of the female characters were considered immoral because they kissed other women, challenged men, smoked and drank, or wore mini skirts. Today, Nolly Babes and similar accounts are reimagining these women, taking their scenes out of the moralistic context of the films, and turning them into iconic feminist personas.

The first time Nollywood content seeped into the mainstream internet consciousness can be traced back to 2017 when videos of Nollywood’s favourite comedic duo Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme, better known as Aki and Pawpaw, rose to popularity due mostly to the influence of a now-defunct Twitter account @nollywoodroll ran by Nicole, a woman based in Brazil.

Their memes became the go-to reaction videos for expressing a wide range of emotions: joy, disappointment, sadness, frustration. The appeal was in seeing children making mischief or in adult situations – drinking beer and smoking cigars, wooing bigger women, or in oversized suits shouting instructions at people twice their size. Although both Ikedieze and Iheme were in their 20s in the early 2000s when most of the films were made, they mostly played children because of their body stature. By 2019, the memes had achieved such virality that brands like Rihanna’s Fenty would use them for social media clout.

Theodora Imaan Beauvais is the curator of Yung Nollywood, another archive of clips and stills from old Nollywood paying homage to its controversial female characters, after screenshotting moments from Nollywood she found “appealing or inspirational”. Yung Nollywood is remarkably distinct from Nolly Babes for its subtitling of the films’ stills from Nollywood films, something she attributes to Tumblr. While the idea to give witty captions to the actors’ facial expressions came from watching Netflix. “I thought, ‘If someone could describe Nollywood reactions in short phrases it’d be an art form on its own,’ and I became that someone.’”

In December 2019, Tochi and Ebele hosted a Nollywood-themed party in Lagos. Nollywood actor and musician Nonso Bassey attended the party dressed in a two-piece jean set and bucket hat, a signature look of the bad boy/alpha male archetype, and a role reprised multiple times by older actors such as Hanks Anuku, Emeka Ike, and Jim Iyke. Since that party, Nonso has attended social functions and premieres in outfits that make a nod to the fashion choices of that era of Nollywood. He insists, though, that he isn’t cosplaying Nollywood characters of that era. “I’ve always been attracted to the idea of merging old world charm with a new school approach,” he said.

The party caused a cultural stir amongst Nigerians and Africans both at home and in the diaspora – every other week, there seems to be a Nollywood-themed party held either in Lagos or London. Take for instance friends and business partners Imani Okunubi and Aseosa Uwagboe, two Nigerian-British kids who grew up in the UK. Nollywood was one of the ways they could connect back to their roots. That experience informs their event brand, Lasgidi to London, targeted at Nigerians living in the UK. “We wanted to create events that were reminiscent of the Naija hall parties (Owambe) we attended as kids, as we don’t want to see that culture die,” Aseosa said. Their next owambe is a Nollywood-themed party and guests are expected to come dressed in their “best nolly Y2K aesthetic”.

Below, the Nolly Babes sisters talk about creating and hosting the first Nollywood-themed party and the cultural moment it has inspired.

How did that first event come about – please take me through it, from the planning to how it turned out?

Nolly Babes: From the inception of Nolly Babes, we knew we had to throw a party. Fashion is a huge part of what makes Nolly Babes different from other Nollywood-themed pages and we knew we were the only ones that could set Nolly Babes as the dress code and have people commit as they did. There are many iconic Nollywood scenes and scenarios. The daughter meeting her evil mother-in-law, the ominous visit to the Babalawo, the campus stroll – just the mere mention of these scenes evokes images that have been embedded in the minds of our fellow Nollywood enthusiasts. The party scene is probably the most iconic of them all. Whether it’s in a club, a mansion while mum and dad are out of town (but coming home early to crash the whole thing) or poolside, the Nolly Babes party scene has its staples: mad music, dancing, and sick outfits.

December in Lagos is notoriously hectic. On each day, there are day parties, beach hangouts, concerts, and we just knew we had to be a part of it. Our flyer was the first thing we made sure was done right, and that has been replicated (but never duplicated) many many times. We went through at least six drafts of that until we got the flyer to be a realistic replica of the home video covers from the golden era. The DJs Kemi Lijadu and vIVENDII Sounds understood the assignment and played music from the Nolly Babes era. We’re talking Tony Tetuila, Mo Hitz, Wande Coal, Plantation Boyz… We curated a special cocktail menu: Genny Colladas, Jim Iyke’s Hard Lemonade, MargaRita Dominic, and our Lagos Island Iced Tea, in tribute to Nollywood stars Genevieve Nnaji, Jim Iyke, and Rita Dominic respectively. We had a video projection on the famous red wall at Nok showing a mashup of emblematic scenes. We were partying while seeing images of a young Jim Iyke dressed just like many of the attendees were dressed. It was magical! We have an event we’re planning in New York for the summer – it’s going to be a madness.

Did you envisage it becoming the cultural movement it’s now become?

Nolly Babes: We really didn’t. We hosted the party because we knew people were taking inspiration from our page for styling jobs and music video treatments, and wanted to give everyone a chance to recreate some of their favourite looks. Now every week we see people planning Nollywood-themed parties and sending people to our page for references. It’s awesome. Toke Makinwa even recently attended a Nolly Babes-themed party and she was dressed as a character we have immortalised – Regina Askia in President’s Daughter. She killed it! Even though the character wasn’t referenced, it was clear as day and it was awesome to see that she pulled it off! Honestly, when we see people really pay attention to detail and execute the theme well it’s so, so dope.

How has TikTok helped grow Nollywood's influence? You posted a scene from Girls Cot, the famous “you stink with poverty” clip on TikTok and it went viral and birthed these recreations even by non-Africans.

Nolly Babes: We’re just happy to see that another aspect of Nollywood that we champion – the iconic scenes and one-liners – is also resonating across the world. We see Nolly Babes as an archival work and as much as we focus on beauty and looks on Instagram, it’s nice to be able to point people in the direction of the scenes that are forever embedded in our brains. These are scenes we recreated in jest ourselves before there was even a Nolly Babes to begin with, so to see it catching on TikTok is exciting and a new frontier for us to fully explore. I think what distinguishes Nolly Babes from other Nollywood pages and what contributes to our TikTok success is that we really watch Nollywood movies. We grew up watching these movies and continue to do so now so we can capture those moments in films that the casual consumer or poster of Nollywood content might not.

What are your thoughts on Nollywood’s influence on the Alté scene? Music videos of artists such as Lady Donli and Odunsi nod to the aesthetic and fashion styles of that era.

Nolly Babes: Nollywood, and specifically the aesthetic we have shone a spotlight on, is probably one of the biggest influences in terms of visuals in that scene right now. I have never seen so many Eucharia (Anunobi) eyebrows on TV and we love it! It’s awesome to see our images and scenes being used in treatments and storyboards. If we’re being candid, we think it would be great if we got the chance to step into our stylist/creative direction bag and help with the execution of the aesthetic.

How far do you see Nollywood's influence on pop culture, beyond Nigeria and Africa?

Nolly Babes: When we moved to New York we found our Dominican and South American friends had also grown up watching Nollywood films. The bottom line is really that Nolly Babes has brought what was already an international cultural influence to the modern social media realm with a new lens. Nollywood clips were online everywhere – but it was always in a comedic way. Aki and PawPaw are meme gods now, and that’s because their expressions transcend cultural boundaries. Black Twitter eats that stuff up.

Nolly Babes chooses to center the beauty, style, and iconic imagery, even the home decor with our #NollyDecor hashtag of the golden era of Nollywood. We share the makeup, accessories, fashion, iconic phrases, and scenes in a way that isn’t just comedic but inspirational and aesthetically groundbreaking. I see Nollywood being at the centre of this Y2K resurgence that is happening all over the world, from TV to runways and fashion collections. That era is coming back around and, this time, the Black experience is being revisited and centered in a way it wasn’t back in the late 90s and 2000s. (Black people) were always the originators of the trends and this time they’re tapping into the source and Nollywood, particularly the era we celebrate as Nolly Babes, is a great resource for that.

Patrick Bateman and His Possession of Artworks

Everybody knows American Psycho or at least hear the name of the movie. It’s a quite famous movie even though it contains challenging and gruesome imagery. Besides, its huge fanbase, Patrick Bateman is a cultural viral. His memes, quotes are still circulated through media. Bateman mostly stands out with his possessions. His iconic Oliver People glasses, Valentino suit, Rolex watch, Jena-Paul Guilttere suit bag (suspected), and his prestigious house that located American Gardens Building on W. 81st Street on the 11th floor. Undoubtedly, Patrick adores his house. It is a white-dominant minimally designed house. It resembles an art gallery. If we look carefully at his house we could find many things to discuss but in this blog, I want to talk about Patrick Bateman’s possession of artworks.

At the beginning of the movie Patrick Bateman introduces himself to the audience by narration. He also gives us a tour of his house. Passing the frames with black squares, Bateman goes for a pee. As he tries to empty his bladder we see his face from a reflective surface of a frame. This frame is a poster of Les Miserables musical in which Bateman only would be able to bear misery in an art context. Although it’s a weird choice for toilet framing, Les Miserables (1985) is one of the most successful and profitable musical adaptation ever. You could see reviews like “A musical that made history”. Bateman might watch this musical in the front seat and have fun, especially in the fifth act where the performers sing the I Dreamed a Dream (also featured in the original soundtrack). He should be touched by the following lines: “There was a time when men were kind When their voices were soft And their words inviting There was a time when love was blind And the world was a song And the song was exciting There was a time and it all went wrong”

Besides, Les Miserables there is a second artwork that Bateman probably spent on an immense amount of money just to buy and use as a decoration. Longo’s Men In Cities always finds a way to be seen in the frame. His two pairs of lithographs are centered in the Bateman’s living room.

While Longo creating the Men in Cities series he states that his inspiration came from the neo-noir (specifically American Soldier 1970) crime movies and punks’ dance moves.  To execute this series he gathered his friends on the roof of the house and took their photos just like he uses the camera as a gun and his friends try to dodge the bullets. I think it's also a stop motion practice on photos where he tries to capture small movements of the human body. It is a physical artwork. We see men and women in chic dresses and trying to stay on their feet. The men and women become a silhouette with huge negative space. As I read into Longo's art, I found that Longo commonly inserts violence in his art where he references the war era and the rise of capitalism afterward.

In an interview, Ellis discusses the original book of American Psycho (written by Brad Easton Ellis) where he states that his primal concern is to make fun of capitalism and what stupid meaningless values it brings to the people. Hence using Longo’s artwork matches with the film. However, as a huge fan of the movie I always found the capitalist subtext of the movie arguably weak as the audience is blinded by the killer charisma of the Bateman. Thus, the audience fails to understand Bateman's misery in abundance.

WIP Wednesday - Let’s Talk Music

I don’t have any writing to really offer today.  I’ve been trying to work on that Haven fic but unfortunately Aloysius hasn’t been co-operating with me despite all my best efforts to make him speak.  I may take a break from writing and pivot towards completing some art memes, but Wednesday just sort of crept up on me and here we are.  So instead, I’m sharing something that both is but also isn’t a work in progress?

It’s “in progress” because while I’m happy with where it currently is, I’ve said that about playlists and soundtracks before and later changed them.  I’ve worked hard on this and talked several friends’ ears off about songs I’ve heard or artists that seemed to work and thanks to their feedback I think this is a really good one.  It’s gone through several edits as well, and may potentially even go through more down the road.  So I’m saying this counts for today.

If you give it a listen (and I hope you do because I’m very proud of it so far), I hope you enjoy it and maybe discover an artist you didn’t know before.  It clocks in at around 51 minutes and features 13 tracks which span Quinn Trevelyan’s story and important events of the main game through to Trespasser.

If you are interested, below the cut is a list of tracks and a brief blurb or description about who or what they’re meant to represent.  I was going to go into things in more depth and talk about how I built it, why I picked the songs I did, and the B-Sides that were left on the cutting room floor, but after realizing I had written nearly 4 pages about just as many songs, I realized it was too much for anyone to read.  So below is just a very brief summary and I think that most of the music would speak for itself, but I’m happy to expand more on anything that anyone finds either interesting… or confusing.  (There is also Solas content because I knew a few of you love that.)

Quinn’s tarot card is the Wheel of Fortune as his story is a series of unpredictable highs and lows.  What the Maker giveth, He also taketh away.  The playlist follows that trend of highs and lows with upbeat songs followed by darker or more mellow ones.  Whenever I create a playlist, I try to think of a general tone or sound that I want to be carried through the soundtrack.  I want the overall genre or sound to tell the story as much as the individual songs.  Because of that, you’ll see artists repeat a couple of times, and when they do it’s always intentional.  You’ll also notice that most of the vocalists are male.  This was again intentional because this is Quinn’s story, and he’s a man.  They are his songs and I wanted the vocals to reflect that.

The Cult of Dionysus - pre-Conclave Quinn

Quinn at his most basic and stereotypical before any character development happens whatsoever - poppish, upbeat, and maybe just a little obnoxious.  He smokes, he drinks, he fucks, and nothing else matters.

The Sound of Silence - Aloysius’ Theme

I like Aloysius as a more practical view and examination of Quinn and the cult that grows around him.  He affords an opportunity to look at Quinn both as the Herald but also as just a person.  He is stoic and mild-mannered, a dutiful soldier, and an excellent foil for Quinn.  This is also absolutely a reference to an Arrested Development joke.

Isle of Dogs - Quinn’s true theme

Quinn is a walking disaster constantly falling victim to his own hubris.  There’s a morose sort of resentment to the lyrics, of someone who is constantly struggling against the tide.  In a lot of ways, this is basically a reaction or push back to all the crap I have put him through.

Providence - “In Hushed Whispers”

There are no Templars here.  The first few lines relate a lot to the dismissal the fledgling Inquisition receives from what remains of the Chantry, but the rest of the lyrics are very much about the mages and Fiona’s dealings with the Venatori.

Seven Devils - “In Your Heart Shall Burn

No male vocals in this one to symbolize the change in perspective.  This is both a bit of an easy and obvious choice for this story beat.  Female vocals for Corypheus might seem strange, but when I created my Warden’s soundtrack I tended to use powerful choruses and female vocals for anything related to Blight, Archdemons, or the darkspawn.  I carried that idea over to this as Corypheus is one of the seven Magisters.

Caesar - becoming the Inquisitor

This is a softer and quiet interlude in the wake of the loss of Haven and struggle through the snow.  If the previous song marks the end of the first act, this song marks the beginning of the second.

King - “Here Lies the Abyss”

In my written world state, Alistair is both the king and the Grey Warden contact (this goes back to that longform fic I am working on).  I suppose it’s a bit unfair because in the end that has a major impact on why Quinn makes the decision he does at Adamant (a rather threatening letter from the Warden helps too).  Think of this as a duet between Quinn and Hawke.

My Type - the love interest

“Here Lies the Abyss” was completed first, then a romance triggered, then “Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts”.  This is that sort of inbetween interlude and is very much inspired by how I may have flirted with multiple characters a little too much and basically triggered several romances at once.  I also went into Quinn’s playthrough having no idea who I was going to romance and just let him shop around.  And it came down to a coin flip in the end, so “you have a pulse and you are breathing” is pretty much the only standards he has.

Boheme Supreme - party at Halamshiral

All I have to say is that I love techno swing, every single lyric in this song is perfect, and I want you all to picture Quinn Trevelyan walking into the Winter Palace with his Inner Circle entourage around him, dressed up in that outfit I drew with that peacock feathered cap and having a drink in his hand throughout the entire night’s affair.

Hell’s Coming With Me - “Doom Upon All the World”

This is the climax of the main game, the rematch between Quinn and Corypheus which I have to imagine is more impressive in concept than it was in game.  I chose the dialogue option when Corypheus calls Quinn an imposter, “I am the Maker’s chosen” as his final challenge.  Sometimes it’s easy to forget that this main is actually very Andrastian.  But he is, and the lyrics, “I am the righteous hand of God/And I am the Devil that you forgot/And I told you one day will see/I’ll be back I guarantee/And that Hell’s coming with me” are the perfect declaration.

Paradise - Jaws of Hakkon & The Descent

Another interlude song.  If the previous one is triumphant than this one is the beginning of a bad turn.  In the interim between the events of the main game and the Exalted Council, things begin to go wrong in little ways.  His relationship with Cassandra begins to break down, eventually ending in the two of them having frequent spats and going their separate ways after returning from the Frostback Basin.  This song is deceptively sarcastic about how good things are.

I Still Love You, Judas - Solas’ Betrayal

Solas… oh, Solas.  Does this song indicate a very complicated and layered relationship between Quinn and Solas?  Yes! Have I attempted to unpack any of this?  Nope!  Have fun with this one!

Battle Cries - Quinn and Cassandra

I saved this one for the very end because it is a story within a story.  It is sad and bittersweet, but also not.  This entire thing feels to me like a duet between Quinn and Cass on what was good, what could never last, and that it’s all over now but that’s okay.  Because “this isn’t a breakup, dear heart, it’s a season finale.”  Does this mean that Quinn sounds like Joey Batey when he sings?  Sure, why not.

—okay so this is cheating and I know it, since Uncertain Humors (the one where Marinette/Adrien is both Orpheus/Eurydice and Theseus/Ariadne) is nowhere near finished, never mind posted (maybe I'll get “Sanguine” done to post on my birthday?)

but it is still my favorite of the year. as you might guess from that description of the story, this scene has content notes for character death:

6) A fic or scene that challenged you:

where the firelight fades, no contest. this is the second story I’ve ever been able to stick with more than a couple hundred words past the 20K mark, but it’s easily the twentieth novel-length I’ve begun. (though also, you know that kedreeva post? well, 90K later, I’m less than 15K from completing this 10K fic! I think.) and I have been learning so much about long-form fiction.

there has also been a lot of weeping and tearing my hair. case in point: I just trashed the chapter 15 draft because I figured out the reason it wasn’t going anywhere! I can probably keep the first few hundred words of that draft without any editing, and another few hundred with some revision...

7) A line of writing you’re proud of:

from “j'ai rêvé (so I don't have to dream alone)”:

Everything about their partnership is fragments of sentences in the dream diary Adrien writes in ultraviolet pen. Disjointed flickers of thought even when examined under the black light he hides in the snack cabinet under packets of Super Yoyo sandwich cookies and bags of cheesy Monster Munch potato chips and boxes of petit écolier butter cookies (chocolat noir)—none of which explains the gym-socks smell. All fleeting incoherent flashes, invisible between the mundane lines of La Modification shelved at his bedside between Leroux and Dumas. None of it is solid. Adrien has more proof his room's haunted.

okay let me break this down for you!

* Adrien started a dream diary to make sense of the memories

* in invisible ink, in a book that (according to Wikipedia) is thematically appropriate and won’t (if Gabriel sees it) look like anything other than Adrien developing an interest in French literature

* shelved between Phantom of the Opera and The Three Musketeers

* look I didn’t come up with the name “black light”

* or “chocolat noir” for what English speakers call “dark chocolate”, or “petit écolier” (that is, “little schoolboy”) for that sort of butter cookie

* also not my fault that “chocolat noir” sounds remarkably like “Chat Noir”, which, attentive readers may have noticed, is not a name that appears in the story after the header and before Miraculous Cure

* I found the website of a store in Boston, Massachusetts that caters to French expats, and the yo-yo cookies and the monster chips were right there in the photos, y’all

* the snack stash and the black light live in the cabinet where, in canon, the Camembert lives; yes, that cheese smells in the real world like gym socks

* this story’s akuma was not able to affect anything but squishy human memory: nobody affected remembers anything about Ladybug or Chat Noir or Hawkmoth, not in any solid way, not even when they read news articles about the subject, and this includes Marinette and Adrien not being able to see or hear or remember their own kwamis—but you know what Adrien’s Insta post about his poltergeist and Adrien’s Insta post with the floating sock don’t show and don’t explicitly refer to?

11) Do you have any writing goals for the next year?

I’m starting work on a fantasy novel, a Sleeping Beauty retelling in which I explore (among other things) the economic consequences of the king’s ordering all the spinning wheels burned, and I want to make significant progress on that. and I want to not make my hands any worse; I kind of need those!

the twins have a joint channel but they post things together as often as they make videos on their own. they do vlogs, story times, and challenge videos both together and not, but do stuff with fashion/makeup together. taako does cooking on his own and lup does chemistry experiments that involve fire more often than not. if someone says they like the twins’ videos it’s a wild card as to what they watch them for, but everyone ends up liking all of their content because who can hate the twins? they have a lot of “annoying influencer” energy but are actually really nice to fans/people in general and donate a lot of their Youtube Money to charities and stuff (all of the ipre does this too because fuck rich people except for them)

magnus’ channel is mostly woodworking/construction projects. he does occasional story times and in every one he’s carving and/or painting a wooden duck. he does vlogs too and half of them are him buying more woodworking stuff (idk shit about it so idk what he’d get lol) and the other half have a part where he sees someone walking a dog and him going to meet them. almost every video includes/mentions julia and people make “magnus talking about julia” compilations bc he loves his wife and talks about her all the time. he’s very positive in general and everyone loves how he’s a human golden retriever

merle’s channel is 99% gardening, 1% collating with the others. he made one joke along the lines of plant fucking and it was not serious at all but his subscribers/followers made into such a big joke that he makes at least one joke per video except for when his kids are in the video, which is when he makes it suuuper educational and fun and wholesome. mookie tries to eat the plants and play with the soil and mavis tells her dad about what she’s learned about biology in school. also he puts “(emotional)” and “(not clickbait)” at the end of video titles randomly despite knowing what they mean

barry’s channel is science-centric (yes he collabs with lup frequently) but about more feilds of science. sometimes he goes on rants about theoretical physics like a madman a la bdg’s unraveled series and sometimes he makes videos titled “making the volcano kitchen experiment but the size of a kiddie pool (emotional).” he also has a series about paranormal activity/cryptids, stuff like “why ghosts should be and are real” and “my top five favorite pieces of bigfoot evidence” and like i said this is a no magic au but he once was asked in a q&a about what he’d do if he was a lich and gave a surprisingly detailed response? people were really confused but intrigued?? did barry invent magic???

lucretia 100% has an art channel, but she also writes prose and poetry in her free time and sometimes reads them for videos. she posts speedpaints of her work (digital and traditional) with her telling her process/inspiration or doing story times as the background audio. she had a period of time where she started writing a whole novel in her spare time (basically the balance story but different characters) and all her videos were her making concept art. her fans loved it and boosted it to the point where it actually got published, so now she’s a best selling author with a seven book series. now she keeps making videos of her concept art for other book ideas (the other arcs) with her infodumping about the characters/plot/etc

davenport doesn’t actually have a channel, but has been in the background of all the others’ videos to the point where he’s treated like a cryptid and has a small fanbase of his own. he’s mostly in merle’s videos (because they’re dating) and magnus’ vlogs (because magnus Loves His Friends) but he’s been in at least a handful of everyone’s videos. he makes a twitter and instantly gets thousands of followers. he tweets the most random shit at the most random times and half of them become memes. people find out he’s a professor at the college the rest of them met at and everyone looses it

kravitz is in a similar position as davenport, but he was convinced to start a channel. he mostly does stuff involving antiques because he collects them, so he does haul videos of what he bought or thrifted and videos of him restoring them as he looks up how old they were and what random shit they were used for and stuff. people make compilations of him getting off topic and going on a tangent about taako then realizing he just rambled for ten minutes and getting flustered. he also plays a handful of classical instruments and makes occasional collabs with lup + barry

despite having completely different channels they’re all friends??? people didn’t know at first but they found out through davenport and kravitz “this one guy who i think is dating taako but i’m not sure and idk his name” showing up in everyone’s videos. from then on they started collabing more often and it’s really fun to see them outside of their element. lup once almost burnt down magnus’ workshop while making a chemistry video with him. taako tried to teach kravitz how to make macaroons (keyword: tried) and kravitz talked about this new antique shop he found the whole time. barry went on and on and on about biology while gardening with merle, who tried to follow along but failed and ended up making fun of all the scientific names for plants

they call themselves the red robes after the main characters in lucretia’s novel (they’re not similar to the characters but there’s seven of them and six youtubers + one davenport)

they once did a big group collab where the twins dressed everyone up in high fashion outfits and lucretia painted a big portrait of all of them. it was very wholesome but also had a lot of lup and taako arguing over what accessory fits who and “no this person should do their hair like this!” and at one point magnus and kravitz just dipped to go play cards and talk about dogs

speaking of wholesome angus has a channel of his own which is mostly booktube with him getting halfway through a mystery novel, predicting the ending, and being 100% correct. he’s done videos with the others and is kinda associated with them but not totally, and is often lovingly referred to as the nephew to the rest of them

killian and carey don’t have a channel but are in the bg of magnus’ videos often. they were referred to as “magnus’ lesbian friends” until they got popular on instagram and became an internet power couple. johann has a small channel and a soundcloud he plays violin on and did one (1) collab with lup and it made him blow up overnight. avi has a semi-popular twitter and is mostly known as johann’s bf. sloane and hurley have a channel about drag racing/cars in general and don’t show their faces and go by the raven and ram

i was trying to think of who’d have a gaming channel and it’s 100% graham, who casually mentions that he’s friends with Pro Wrestler Jess The Beheader

lucas has a science focused channel similar to barry’s where he tries to be educational and ends up being annoying/kind of wrong about it. barry has a mini series called “lucas miller is a bitch here’s why” and it’s him disproving lucas’ theories with a deadpan expression and generally being better at science than him

remember when i said taako and lup have influencer energy despite being nice? yeah, lydia and edward are like that but they’re actually annoying. they have a popular makeup/fashion channel and lup and taako have gotten into slight drama with them over how the wonderland twins have been rude to them and the how the red robe twins are “jealous.” the internet is divided over who likes which pair of twins better

lup learns that greg fucking grimauldis (who the twins knew in high school) has a popular twitter/insta platform and tweets the “i am to collect” speech out of nowhere from everyone’s pov. taako tweets the video he took of him telling her and her immediately going “no fucking way that ASSHOLE is getting away with what he did to me” and opening twitter. it becomes a meme and he pays her back and changes his social media handles to “gregfuckinggrimauldis”

☼: how i came up with the idea

okay so stolen things was actually originally gonna be my entry for the set sail exchange- basically one of my giftee’s liked ships was namivivi so i blanked out and wrote it in like forty-eight hours- but i ultimately ended up switching gears to write something else that better fit what they’d requested, which meant i could post this one early! 

and uh the other inspiration was actually this art by @narramin, the story isn’t directly based on it or anything but it was just like... the Vibes and the concept of timeskip namivivi rendezvous stuck in my brain

☠: something i found challenging

oh uhhh first of all toragara was my first time writing anything substantial from luffy’s point of view and that was HARD. it’s so tricky to get inside his dumb rubber head. there were a few observations or descriptions i had to delete because i realized he probably wouldn’t notice/understand certain stuff, especially cause a lot of the story takes place when he’s a kid.

additionally, the timeline also kind of tripped me up, though that was a lesser problem. originally the second meeting scene (with the bear trap) took place a couple years earlier, before sabo’s ‘death,’ but i wound up moving it later so things would be more evenly spaced out. 

(another thing i am finding challenging is the sequel. it’s been on the backburner for awhile. i have a lot of scene ideas but for some reason my brain is just not cooperating.)

☄: what the writing process was like

i think i mentioned this in the notes on one or both of the stories, but the writing process for this au is SO patchwork, because it’s the kind of au where there’s a lot of stuff that doesn’t change at all, and obviously i don’t wanna write stuff that would just go the same as canon. 

so instead i wind up bouncing between different scenes that WOULD be interesting to examine under this lens, which is why both stories are kind of just collections of scenes without much through-line. hopefully law’s chapter will be a bit more cohesive, cause the wings play a more direct role in that one.

hey, another deleted scene! originally i was gonna have ace be doing some post-school traveling to parallel his canon blackbeard hunting adventures, and have him drop in on vivi to visit since they met in canon. i can’t actually remember why i deleted this other than it felt kinda outta place and i wasn’t sure where to take the scene but it was fun!

“Miss Vivi!” Terracotta’s voice sing-songs from the direction of the entryway. “There’s a young man here asking for you!”

Vivi blinks, glancing up from her book. “A young man?” she repeats, bewildered. The only young men she’s on close terms with are Kohza and his friends, but her house is practically their second home- Terracotta would just announce any of them by their names.

“A young man?” her father echoes, sounding decidedly more alarmed.

Vivi laughs outright at his tone as she sets her book aside and hurries to the entryway, her father following after her more slowly, leaning on his cane.

As if it’s boys he has to worry about, anyways.

She rounds the corner into the entryway, glancing curiously around, and-

“Vivi!”

- is immediately grabbed up in a massive bear-hug that lifts her clear off the floor. She recognizes the voice first, and then everything else comes through in pieces: bright orange hat, wide grin, freckles.

“Ace?”

He cackles with laughter and drops her back down to her feet, giving her a chance to look him over properly. He hasn’t changed much, in seven months- his hair is a little longer, and it looks like in the absence of a dress code he’s quit buttoning up his shirt, but that’s not much of a change, anyways.

“I- what are you doing here?” she finally manages, still all but gaping.

He grins. “Graduated! I decided to take a page out of your book and do the international travel thing, instead of,” he pulls a horrified face, “college. So now I’m just, ramblin’, y’know?”

“How long ago did you leave home?” Vivi asks.

He wiggles a hand in the air. “Two months ago-ish? I haven’t really been keeping track.”

“So you must have some good stories already, right?” she asks, bouncing on her toes a little.

So I've been looking for some art trends that have been going on since I left. Since I deleted my Instagram they've been a bit harder to find, but I found one that was pretty small (at least from what I found, again no Twitter or Insta so I don't know if it was big there.) But it was something along the lines of, "how would you dress my OC compared to how I dress them." I think it's a cute idea because it reminds me of the DTIYS challenge, which I love so I wanted to give it a try.

He tends to wear women's clothes including dresses, skirts, and blouses. This isn't a typical dress he wears. but I wanted to try designing small dresses based on other fairy tales. This one is inspired by Alice in Wonderland, hence the blue dress, hearts, and red roses. Anyone and everyone is open to dress him up anyway they wish (note yes I did say he wears women's clothes, but he also in one point of the story has to wear a tuxedo so he's not opposed to wearing men's clothes either). In all honesty if you draw your version of clothes for him I might draw it to at a different time just to get some more art practice in (I'll credit you no worries). Hugo Redford is a privileged boy with a big house, a comfortable life and enough money so he doesn’t have to worry about it right now. His parents have a boring marriage and fight a lot over petty stuff. Actually, his mom doesn’t love his father. She likes to fuck him, sometimes, and make a better use of his money than he actually does. She invests, he’s the trophy husband. This is why his parents let them marry, they saw a lot more potential on her. Grandma Redford is literally every cold-hearted socialite you’ve ever heard of.

Dean, his father, has an affair with his business partner - a much younger man. Hugo caught Dean cheating on his mother, but his father didn’t see him and the son never confronted his father about it.

Helen, his mother, is polite, capable, smart and full of rage. She comes from a middle class family, nothing like her husband’s family, but she always had great ambitions, which is why she married him. Helen raised her son to be better than her husband, but you know, he’s a man, so she doesn’t have high expectations - for Helen, all men are trash.  He feels like every accomplishment he does, his mother isn’t pleased enough and maybe she’ll never get to love him as much as he wants her to love him.

Hugo learned a valuable lesson in life: don’t expect much from people, and expect even less from Dean Redford. Which is why, when his father told him a year ago that he had siblings, Hugo’s response was a meme. Even before he met Connor and Casey Roberts, Hugo already knew they weren’t cut for that kind of thing. He has a good eye to spot rotten people, since he grew up surrounded by them, and he knew the Roberts Twins were good people.

The first thing Hugo told his brother, Connor, was: “You won’t last a day here. Go back to wherever you came from, you’ll be much better off. He doesn’t love you”. He didn’t say this because he’s mean, although it’s kinda true, but because he felt responsible to prepare them for how the upper class would react to them. Therefore, Hugo would antagonize them to make sure they would be ready.

Dean is a gentleman, he’s fun, he plays golf, tennis, baseball, everything you can think of. He has a way with people, he just knows how to be magnetic, and although this isn’t innate to Hugo, he copies it well enough to be a second nature. Dean wants the world, he wants everything he can put his hands on and leave his mark. However, he has a horrible habit: he gets bored. The twins are the byproduct of an extramarital relationship with their mom, while he was engaged to Hugo’s mom.

Hugo is disciplined and the kind of person that says exactly what he thinks, even if it’s the cold, hard truth. He does the hard things, the dirty job, he gets things done. If his siblings wanted to know his world, they had to get ready, which is why he took the matter with his own hands to prepare them.

His name is inspired by Victor Hugo, and just like his namesake, doesn’t believe in snitching. He has a machiavellian personality, for him everything is politics. He has a weird moral compass, yet, it’s his own ethical code and he doesn’t break it. He is strongly motivated by sense of duty.

Greek god Hermes vibes. Hugo will listen behind closed doors, steal stuff he finds suspicious and do everything he can to make things better, even if it’s the worst thing possible. Absolute wine snatcher, will steal every available bottle of wine with no guilt. A little bit of a kleptomaniac.

Sleeps around a lot, doesn’t care about gender, and doesn’t pretend he’s straight. It’s just nobody’s business, so he just doesn’t explain it.

He joined Broadripple when he was a freshman, just like most of his family.

He is organized, but always misplaces his academy card.

Hugo avoids the headmaster’s portrait at all costs because he thinks it’s creepy and feels his eyes are following him. When he can’t avoid, he tries to imagine the headmaster dressed like Trixie Mattel.

Sometimes he forgets to greet Sister Clary and it’s… Alwful.

He is scared shitless of the Lorehill Woods, but likes to hang out there and read murder mystery books for the sake of poetic justice. It’s not often and he doesn’t go deep into the forest.

After the former president of the Broadripple Boy’s Club graduated, Hugo was nominated by him as president. He has no idea how to be a president of this club, but he definitely has in mind challenges involving the woods and the ruins. Being nominated as the president is a lot of responsibility and Hugo is afraid he won’t do justice to the former members.

As a roommate, he is pretty neat, but the beginning of the year is the worst. Hugo hates white walls, it gives him anxiety, so it takes him some time to cover the wall beside his bed with anything that resembles wallpaper.

Hugo often got in trouble with the nuns for bad behavior, so on Junior year he got into mandatory Buddy Club duty until he graduates.

Hugo is a member of the Track Team and plays as the goalie to the soccer team. He hates team work, but he had to choose a sport.

* GETTING  TO  KNOW  THE  ACCOUNT : WHAT  INSPIRED  YOU  TO  TAKE  ON  THIS  MUSE : By suggestion since there were things in my creative exploration that I felt lacked. While Hiraga is a dear, sweet muse and a wonderfully written character all his own, there were still some aspects of the softer, gentler things I wanted to write that his character differs on. So, after writing Terrence for some years as a standalone story arch, I finally penned him as a muse where I truly got to know his character in a clear, bright light (tho that in of itself is still something I am learning). WHAT  ARE  YOUR  FAVORITE  ASPECTS  OF  YOUR  CURRENT  MUSE :   Despite his own perceived short comings and the very real issues his anxiety panic disorder places, he is an abundantly giving man. He has a hope that surpasses his own miserable beliefs, an idealist heart with a nihilist mind. He hopes for so much, and turns that hope into action, though at times he feels awfully drained for it and overwhelmed, it ultimately does not stop him. He stumbles a lot with interactions and relationships, especially the closer someone gets to him (in his main verse) but makes up for it with his patients, or at least tries to. He is non confrontational and will not strike back, though he knows self defense. He is focused and directed, tho if he were too honest, he’d confess to hopelessness. His social bonds and community is a part of his greatest strength and worse weakness. WHAT’S  YOUR  BIGGEST  INSPIRATION  WHEN  IT  COMES  TO  WRITING : Yeah cheesy for some, but it is in fact my friends. I’ve gone sometimes well into the several months period of no writing at all, and still they stuck by me, working with me on it. They inspire me greatly and give me so much motivation and ideas that sometimes I have some trouble channeling them all into something solid and productive. So I end up making a catalog of ideas and methods and stories to work with them, and collaborate on. Asides from them, it would be my books. My music. I listen to a wide range but mostly my gothic metal, my dark instrumentals, my foreign tongues. But ofc that is easily subject to change. I have many many bookmarks and I use them for numbering portions of books to later study and mull over, and see where about I can apply it, if at all. If nothing else I take the concept and put it into my art.  FAVORITE  TYPES  OF  THREADS :   All kinds. I love the character building ones, that explore where and how two muses came together at all. I enjoy the ones that make me crack my psychology books, my philosophy books, and really work with the other mun to piece together and world build. I find it absolutely fascinating to learn how they will interact with one another, be it action, such as fighting a foe in the AU for Terry, or some muse trying to convince Main Verse Terry that the supernatural exists, or how he would handle having his own ideals challenged (such as his taught homophobia) when he does meet supernaturals, especially of light or holy standing. But also I love me some silly threads, some sweet and cozy threads; just give me all sorts pls ♥  BIGGEST  STRUGGLE  IN  REGARDS  TO  YOUR  CURRENT  MUSE : He just won’t talk about himself. Not in the Main verse. He is terrified of being close to anyone too intimately, so writing his AU is basically just writing what he could possibly be if he just learned to open up. Which isn’t to say he does not open up, he does so in ways of telling a lot while telling little, and vice versa.
