💙Smoshblr December Asks💛

It’s been a truly wild year in this fandom and I genuinely love the comfortable and supportive space we have created together here on this platform! 🫶

And since the year is coming to an end, I thought it might be fun if we celebrated that with a little ask game, of sorts!

The "Shayne guesses his coworker's favourite [...]" is prob one of my fave smosh series and also what partially me inspired for this! Since it might be a tad difficult for all of us to guess for eachother, I figured it'd be cool, if, instead, everyone shared their Top 3 of those categories (and more)!

So my idea was to send "top 3" asks to all you lovely ppl in the smoshblr community. One for each day of december 🩵

Some of these questions will be directly smosh related and others are just random categories I'm curious about 😊

And while I already plan to annoy my mutuals & blogs I follow with this 😹🩷 I also want to bring some joy to the smosh blogs/fans I might not know yet! Including the ones that might enjoy the channels, but don't usually post much about it themselves!

bad buddy fandom getting-to-know-you-meme!

Tagged by @telomeke, thanks friend! I had to get through the weekend drama deluge before I could clear out some brain space to answer this one properly, because I never mess around when I'm talking Bad Buddy.

Name and whatever you want to share about yourself

Shan, she/her, I live in the US. I am a lifelong consumer of stories and both an avid reader and drama watcher. I write a lot of meta because when I enjoy a thing I love to dissect and unpack it, and I post on tumblr because I have the most fun when I do that with other people.

When did you watch bad buddy/join the fandom?

I watched Bad Buddy live when it was airing! I was not on tumblr then but I was lurking around fandom spaces and following the week to week discussions around the show, but not actively participating in them. After that my interest in bl as a genre only grew, so I created this blog about 9 months ago to start joining in the fun.

Favourite ship/s

Pat/Pran, of course. They are amongst my all time favorite couples that I've seen in any media, period. I will spice this up by also admitting Pa/Ink didn't do all that much for me. They were just a bit too underwritten for me; I am not someone that is wowed by side crumbs or enjoys filling in the gaps myself. But I am really looking forward to seeing Milk and Love headline their own show soon.

Favourite character/s

Going to take a stand here and throw my love Pat's way, because Pran is the character most in fandom seem to connect with. But I just love Pat. He's such a kind and loyal and devoted person at heart. He's a little bit of a himbo about his emotions, but he's also quite smart in his own way and he understands more than people realize. I love his easy acceptance of his own sexuality but also others around him. He has good instincts about people and it's no coincidence he ends up surrounded by such a good community of his own making. And I respect the hell out of his willingness to fight the constraints of filial piety to call his father on his bullshit. He is someone Pran can trust to stick with him through a lot of hard shit, and his easy forgiveness of Pran's more prickly attributes is crucial to their relationship health. For someone with such a healthy ego, Pat has no problem putting it aside for the man he loves. That's real strength, right there.

Favourite episode/s

Joining the pile on for Episode 11, my beloved. When I tell you I was sobbing the first time I watched it. Tears just pouring down my face from the moment Pat told Pran he understood they had to go back all the way through Pran's song for Pat and their return home. It's one of the most moving sequences I have ever seen in a romance, the way they came to the realization of what they were facing, chose each other anyway, and decided they were going to find a way to stay together, even if it couldn't be in exactly the way they hoped.

Favourite scene/s

Oh gosh, there are just so many. The aforementioned sequence in ep 11, both major rooftop scenes, that lone tear tracking down Pran's face at the end of episode 4, Pat confronting Ming. On the lighter side, there's also the brainstorming roleplay from ep 3, pretty much every courtship scene where they flirted via PPL, the FINGER LICK, the final episode wrestling match and sex acrobatics. Every scene between Pat and Pran was just aces.

One thing you would change about the show if you could

Okay, fam, just remember, you asked! Bad Buddy is one of my favorite shows of all time, but as I have discussed with @waitmyturtles at length, it is not perfect and I have some serious quibbles with it from a writing standpoint. My top 3:

Wai outing Pran and then Pran spending the whole episode apologizing to him. Nonsensical, infuriating, and the show didn’t do the work to make us understand Pran and Wai’s friendship enough to accept that. I still hate poor Jimmy's face to this day and I blame that on Aof.

Pat gets shot as the deus ex machina to resolve the Wai plot. Villain comes out of nowhere in the same episode, the whole situation is tonally discordant, no follow through and the injury is treated like he got a paper cut in the aftermath. It's just lazy writing. Honestly, send all of episode 9 to the trash heap.

Finale fake out. Aof undercut his own themes about the struggle of the closet and sublimation of your own needs in service of filial piety in order to play a prank on the audience. Dumb waste of half the finale’s run time that actively worked against the message he sought to deliver, and that ep 12 preview nearly ruined ep 11 for a lot of people. Luckily the second half of the finale was so strong it made up for it, but I maintain the fake out was a bad choice that I would definitely go back and change.

What are your some of your favorite fanworks made by other people?

I am a meta girlie at heart so I am always most excited reading deep dives. I cannot possibly remember all the good shit I have read on Bad Buddy, but I'll give a shoutout to the BBS (gender neutral) girlies keeping the meta alive to this day @telomeke @ranchthoughts @dudeyuri @dimplesandfierceeyes @chickenstrangers @miscellar @grapejuicegay. I am always so excited when I see new posts about this show on my dash and I had a great time clowning with you all on OS2.

What are your favourite fanworks you've made?

I wasn't here when the show was airing so I actually don't have a deep library of my own meta for this show (not that made it onto tumblr, anyway). But one of the fun things about being in bl fandom is we get to make connections across the shows we're all watching, so I'll give a shoutout to this post I did drawing a line between Pran and Jae Won of The Eighth Sense.

sorry this took long to tyupe my cat is attacking my keyboard as we speak he is very upset with me i think (lol). Anyway, if youre comfortable posting stuff like meta/art/liveblogs/etc. that is a great way to make friends. to post and ppl see your posts and rb them and get to know you via interactions. Also reblogging a lot of stuff and speaking in the tags is a great way to add a pt and make friends. ive followed lots of ppl (and ppl have followed me) from my tags before. Send ppl asks off anon for ask games if you want! Participate in fandom events if there are any you like. Interaction is always key I think...at least in my experience. idk if that helps but i hope so :D!

First, I would like to give all of the obikins a very large pat on the back. I mean, think of where we once were... barely hanging on..... almost shot out of the competition every single round..... even though we all KNOW that there are many Obikin shippers out there. Believe it or not, I myself do not ship Obikin in the slightest. :D I like Obi-Wan & Anakin as besties/bros only. But I support the fuck out of Obikin shippers because they are some of the nicest people in this entire fandom. ❤️

However, despite being such wonderful people, Obikins still receive a disproportionate amount of hatred. Even in this very poll, people have been name-calling, ship-shaming, and being general assholes toward the Obikins to an extent they have not been toward other ships (examples below — 😬 yikes!).

Why does this mean that Obikin should win while Codywan should lose? I'm so glad you asked! See, the thing is... you wanna know something about a huge proportion of the Obikin haters? Yeah, you guessed it! They're often Codywan shippers! (More yikes examples below 🙃). Obviously not all Codywan shippers are like this, but damn — the amount of antis within the Codywan community is deeply unsettling. 😬

In other words.... whether you ship Obikin or not... wouldn't it be super fucking funny if, after almost managing to get us voted out, these pro-censorship bitches had to swallow the fact that they fucking lost? 😂

heyy sorry dunno if ur ok with ppl asking for advice, but ive been on the twitter mgs fandom for a little while (mostly as a watcher rather than participating other than liking, rting and occasionally commenting or posting some art) and after a while i realized (a bit too late) that quite a few people that i interacted with are aggressively anti and i dont know how to pull away from them now.

Some were mutuals, i stopped following most of them but they still follow me and im not sure if i should just ignore it or whatever. My main account is very clean when it comes to pro/anti discussion and NSFW in general, altho i do like/rt/discuss a lot of anime art and media that has some questionable content in it (like the monogatari series for example)

Anyway, im just a bit scared they might see these "cracks" and it gets to a point of agression/exclusion/doxxing etc and im a bit terrified of that. Sorry if this sounds dumb, but could i ask you what you experience with the mgs fandom is like on twitter? Have you ever been in a similar situation?

It's totally cool to ask for advice! I'm not sure how much help I'll be though.

I have a twitter that's mostly MGS-focused, but I've been building up defenses against the anti movement for a long time before that. I used to be mutuals with someone who was a really notorious asshole twitter anti, actually. I broke that when they started publicly slandering me, but before they could actually dox me, and they still followed me on side accounts for a couple years after that. I got very careful about vetting who I regularly interact with after that.

I got lucky dropping into MGS fandom, I've found a bunch of people who enjoy freaky stuff as much as I do. But I also had one of those friends get doxxed a while back over ship discourse that was spun as something much worse.

Personally, if I see a callout post and it looks fishy (only includes accusations of fic or art, etc), I will a lot of times block everyone that's retweeted or liked it. It's made me sad a couple of times to break mutuals, but I know I'm saving myself the pain later of potentially seeing them fall for it with me. This, when my friend got doxxed, ended up causing me to block like half of the twitter MGS fandom ngl.

Honestly, my secret to not accidentally making full on anti friends is that when I get into a new fandom, I look up their discourse and who antis say shouldn't be shipped together. Then I look and see who makes art/fic of those ships. If I don't like those ships specifically, I find people who ship both that and whatever I like. Usually I end up liking one or more of them anyways (solimiller...). Or I'll go through that fandom's fics with warnings on them and check out those authors' other works.

That's how I keep accidentally meeting a lot of people in fandom, it turns out. I read a fic, I look at the author's other works or their profile, it has a social media handle, or a discord link, or whatever else, next thing I know I'm talking to them and 5 more people they recommended about whatever freaky kink I found of theirs.

I do actually have a (mostly nsfw) discord link that I would share here, but given some of the weird interactions I've gotten tonight I'm gonna wait a couple days before I post it publicly. It's fandom neutral technically but a lot of us like our war boys (mgs/cod mostly). But uhhh if anybody sees this and wants in feel free to dm me/send an off-anon ask and I'll slip ya a link real quiet.

I warn people some of the heavier content that I regularly post as well, even though I don't explicitly use any discourse labels, but honestly the biggest thing is just pulling your interactions like weeds. People on the internet are, mostly, strangers. You don't like someone's vibes? You can block 'em. You see them being a dick to someone else and don't wanna risk them doing the same to you ? Definitely block. Someone makes posts you don't like and it keeps filling up the tags you frequent? You can block that!

hi there big fan. id say first time writer but i think this is my second ask ive sent you actually. i was meaning to ask how you wind up participating in so many zines! it seems like every time i catch one taking applications it's something i'm just not a fit for, and the ones that i WOULD fit right in with always manage to pass me by. is it just a matter of knowing people? tracking certain tags? luck? genuinely asking because i'd love to take part in something like that and i always see you in so many! ok thats my ask. thanks for writing sooo good i love to read it. sparkle on

Hey Musashi, thanks for the ask, nice to see you in my ask box again.

Anyways, getting into zines! Well, for Ace Attorney getting my start was luck, I didn't even know what a zine was until a new friend told me and some others in our private server that they were in an AA zine and pre-orders had just opened, and so I rushed to support them. I won't ramble your ear off with the whole damn story, but eventually I found the @ aafancalendar which reblogs pretty much every AA event that could be going on. Not every fandom has it's own dedicated calender, but that one is fantastic!

In terms of getting into zines? Most zines have a blind submission process, so I am pleased to say I got into them via skill. But in terms of knowing ppl? That usually helps for running a zine.

Running a zine is a lot of work, but mods also get to be in their own zine, it's kind of a mod privileges thing. So that can be a place where knowing ppl helps, bc if you've shown you're a great mod, they might ask for your help on future projects. But there are still lots of opportunities to get into modding (many zines invite intern mods to learn the ropes!), and you can always just be head mod yourself too, (that's another story for another time). I’m also just autistic af and cold called ppl in the fandom who I admired and wanted to work with and who had worked on other zines. Your mileage may vary, but there’s no harm in asking, just make sure you’re fine taking no for an answer.

That's about how I got into half the zines I'm in, is I'm helping run them. But part of it is just persistence and not counting yourself out before you even apply. I want to get traditionally published too, so been trying the magazine scene, so I already had 1 years worth of magazine rejections under my belt, but even still, it does still hurt to get rejected even from zines, but you have to be persistent. I think I'm at a 50/50 acception to rejection rate when it comes to getting into zines. Sometimes, even if you're skilled, your prose style or whatever just doesn't vibe with the zine mods and that's not a reflection of your skill.

The short of it: put your best works forward and apply to everything you’re interested in.

I'll also leave you with some more resources. So in terms of finding zines from other fandoms, the best resource I've found is @ ZineTown on Twitter. (I know we might not like Twitter, but they're incredibly professional, active and a huge community, extremely worth following.) I'd also suggest joining their Discord channel, bc it is not only great to find zines to contribute to, a ton of mods there also post looking for mods to help out and you can choose to get pinged for specific fandoms, or specific mod roles.

Also if you're into Genshin Impact at all, just from casual observation, they have a bonker yonkers amount of zines, so good time to be a Genshin zine fan.

tl;dr: Follow aafancalendar and ZineTown, apply for literally everything. Make sure to have a private friends server to build you back up after rejections (they will happen, sometimes zines have to reject even highly skilled ppl just for numbers reasons). Next to Me - Ch. 2

Flying down the stairs, your fist collided with the Tagger’s face, bouncing it off the wall and causing him to drop his gun. Catching yourself on said wall, you have enough time to kick his gun away before he delivers a blow to your liver.

Bent over, you are kicked in the face, knocking you down. As he advanced on you, someone hits him from behind. As he stumbles forwards, you roll out of the way, seeing your buzz-cut savior who continues his assault with a fire extinguisher. Landing another hit, he is kicked back as the Tagger recovers.

With Buzz-Cut off him, he looks at you as you get up. He is stopped yet again, this time by a blonde guy also hitting him with a fire extinguisher. The Blonde freezes as the Tagger quickly recovers, and kicks him into the wall. You go to rush him but stop, hearing a yell. Glancing, you see Buzz-Cut tackling the Tagger and failing as he catches himself on the wall and begins to push him back.

Buzz-Cut deflects a punch and goes to block an elbow, but you kick his attacker into the wall. Adapting, he punches the Tagger twice, stopping him… for a moment.

Lashing out, he swings at Buzz-Cut, missing. You kick him again, and again, Buzz-Cut’s fist slams his head against the wall.

The Tagger reaches down and you hear …a sheath? Light reflects off his blade as it knicks Buzz-Cut, forcing him back. You feel your heart racing as your lips twitch.

Kicking him once more, you are rewarded by the blade biting into your leg. He follows up with a swing, which you dodge, falling onto the ground.

The Blonde rushes him and stabs at him with a knife, only managing to get his shoulder before being thrown back, leaving his weapon in the Tagger’s body. Dodging a flurry of attacks, he’s forced against the wall, holding onto the Tagger’s arm as his blade digs into his side. With the Tagger held in place, you move behind him and wrap your arm around his throat, trying to choke him while pulling him off the Blonde.

Tightening your hold, you feel him elbowing you, but hold on. You then feel his blade arm move and are quickly able to guess what he was doing, and you let go. His blade pierces his jacket, right where you were.

Retracting his blade, he turns towards you, and the Blonde takes his blade back, causing the Tagger to swing at him, luckily missing.

By now you are grinning in excitement, it’s been a while since you had such a fun fight, unfortunately, it doesn’t last much longer.

Before the Tagger can make another move, he is riddled with bullets.

Shocked, you turn and see Buzz-Cut holding the gun you kicked away earlier.

Conflicted between being mad that it was over so soon, or glad that it was finally over. You don’t think for long, as a dinging distracts you.

Pulling your phone out, it says, “Game Clear. Congratulations.”

“Wel-” You’re cut off as the Tagger’s neck? Collar, explodes, leaving the wall and floor covered in blood.

Staring at his body, you hear the Blonde speak, “This person… Were they also made to participate in the game?”

Looking down, you see a phone by the body.

“Likely,” You say.

Saying nothing, Buzz-Cut goes to the body and begins looting it, causing you to grimace.

A buzzing sound is heard from a corpse to your left, shocking you that you missed it.

The Blonde goes to check it out and finds a walkie-talkie, from where you are you’re only able to hear, “...in our hands now.”

“”Answer”?” The Blonde mutters. “Hey, can you hear me? Hey, what’s this “answer” you’re talking about?”

It comes back on, “Return. The answer is in our hands now. Return to the beach.”

“The Beach?” He questions, being as confused as you.

My Crazy Roommates (Smut!)

The day starts as it does most days, you wake up, do your morning routine, eat breakfast, and go to work.

Later on, you return home, throwing your shoes off, not caring enough to pick them up, and making yourself comfortable, eating snacks, and watching whatever you want.

…That is until a bright flash blinds you.

“Ah!”  You exclaim.

Once the light is gone, you try to blink your blurry vision away. Succeeding, you see…

NIRAGI AND XUE YANG!

You sharply inhale before trying to escape, your breathing erratic.

Fortunately, they are still blinded by the light.

Unfortunately, you trip and fall. A glance back shows your discarded shoes. Refocusing on the situation, you try to scramble to your feet, but are kicked, landing on your back. You grunt as a foot lands on your chest. Following it up, you see its, admittedly attractive, owner, Suguru Niragi.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

You stumble over your words, unable to get any coherent words out, pissing him off.

“Answer me!” He stomps on your chest.

Fight or flight kicks in and you grasp his leg, but he is kicked off of you, stumbling into the wall.

Xue Yang purses him, not letting a moment pass as Niragi does his best to defend himself.

You miss the snarky comments Xue Yang fires off as your heartbeat fills your ears.

Using this moment to escape, you soon find yourself at your friend’s house, who calls the police for you. But, not even a minute after, your neighbor calls you, telling you that they called the police because of what sounded like “fighting,” and that the two occupants were already in their custody.

For whatever reason, after hanging up, you feel compelled to go to the police station and check on them, much to your and your friend’s bewilderment. But you go and talk to the police, giving them some completely bull story, which later on, you can’t recall how it went, only that you somehow knew what to say.

By the end of it, you say, “They’re my roommates.”

And they let you bail them out.

‘WHY THE FUCK DID I SAY THAT!’ You think, feeling like some higher being must be forcing you, for whatever reason.

By day’s end, Suguru Niragi and Xue Yang, are your “roommates.” Your very dangerous, and attractive, roommates.

Months passed and... you lived.

Though your life wasn’t great at first. You were the only one doing most of the work: cleaning; cooking: shopping: and having a job. What with your “roommates” threatening you, even if they did lose the weapons, you weren’t having a great time. You had expected worse though, you’ve seen their shows after all, which was another thing.

When they found out that they are, were, fictional characters, you expected them to likely lash out.

He was handsome, you would admit. Hell, you’ve said it in less… eloquent terms when you were at your most drunk, during the rare college party. But yes, Sunghoon is handsome, but it’s not the only thing you’ve realized.

Right now, you two are walking down a lonesome street at night, your shoulders occasionally bumping into each other as you laugh and talk. In the moments of comfortable silence, you would glance over at him.

‘He’s still young,’ You think.

And he is. Just like the first time you met him in college.

Now, it’s not impossible that he can look so young still, but you met him when you were nineteen. Now you’re twenty-seven. You’ve aged, you know this and your looks match it. Yet, Sunghoon still looks the same.

‘You are eternally handsome,’ You think.

“What?” Sunghoon asks, stopping to look at you.

“Huh?” You say.

‘Shit, I must’ve said that out loud.’

Looking at Sunghoon, he doesn’t seem that shocked but worried.

“What’s wrong?” You ask, but he hesitates, still worried.

Grabbing his hand, “You know me.”

He looks away, clenching his jaw before taking a deep breath.

“Do you know how we rarely meet in the morning?”

“It’s fine if you’re bus-”

He cuts you off, “I’m not busy.”

“It uh,” He struggles with himself. “It still hurts a little, over time, to be out in the sun. …Despite my age.”

That last part confuses you.

“Despite your age?”

“I’m centuries old, Y/n. I’m a vampire,” He says apprehensively.

You stand in silence, only staring at him. You are about to call him out in disbelief, but your face must give it away because he decides to prove it. Sunghoon raises a hand and his nails, growing longer, sharpen to a fine point, His skin, pale as he ever has been, becomes even paler, like death. He leans his head back and opens his mouth with a soft exhale, showing fangs. Shook, your gaze about his body, glowing in the moonlight, before landing on his eyes.

“Blood.” You are mesmerized by his… beauty.

“I was wrong.” You swallow before slowly holding his face in your hands. “You are eternally beautiful.”

Sunghoon’s features soften, looking relieved.

“Ordinarily, I’m not this dumb,” You say, walking toward the Sanderson house.

“Ordinarily, we don’t pay,” Your friend, Steve says, walking ahead of you.

Yesterday, your friends had the bright idea to go to the witches’ house. Now, as previously stated, you wouldn’t have gone, but your friends were willing to pay you just enough to go.

So here you are, having walked across town, through an old gate, up creaking steps, and into a house full of cobwebs, dust, and old knick-knacks.

“So.” You cough as dust gets in your lungs. “What are we here for?”

Silence.

“...Guys.”

Considering you all moved here recently, it occurs to you that they would likely not have any idea, only that this place housed witches. You at least knew about the Sanderson sisters.

“I’m leaving.”

You turn to go out the door, but one of your friends stops you. You couldn’t tell which though, it was too dark.

“Let’s just… look around.”

‘Tanner.’ You think.

“Besides, we had to pay you to come along.”

‘Steve.’

Sighing, “Someone at least find the lights, please.”

Fumbling is heard for a moment, before.

A metallic flick and a small flame, followed by another.

“Did you just light a candle?” You ask incredulously.

“You said to find a light,” Steve answers back.

Wind appears.

“Whe-”

Green lights appear beneath the floorboards and they begin to shake.

“Fucking hell!” Someone yells, though possibly could’ve been you.

As sudden as it began, the shaking stopped and the light disappears.

“Was this a prank?” You ask, wide-eyed.

MWAHAHA MY EVIL PLAN IS WORKING!!!

...genuinely though, i'm not sure if it's a small renaissance or a big coincidence! this is what i've seen happen from my perspective:

i (re)started my rqg relisten in march, and as a result i started both posting more about rqg and reblogging many more rqg-related posts/following ppl who are into it. the result is that i am now "around" much more of the community than i used to be. i've even gained some (more) beloved rqg mutuals! when i started jumping back into things as it were, i did notice two or three people in the main tag who were posting about listening to rqg for the first time, and i believe the carcar stuff started up (or has been active since at least) november or december of 2023. as it is, since at least march, there are people who never stopped participating in rqg shenanigans and people who are brand new to it, and i have also noticed that after i started my relisten, it seemed like a few other people started their relistens as well.

quite honestly, i did not know how much of this is simply me getting back into rqg (and therefore it only SEEMING like there's an rqg renaissance, when really it's just that i wasn't big in the community previously) and how much is a genuine rqg renaissance happening, but i'm glad it's not just me who has noticed this apparent resurgence of the fandom. whatever the reason for it is, i'm just happy to be here with you all! :) <3

an essay on the fetishization of east asians in fandom

ok y'all

i've got multiple asks about my opinion regarding the whole Sh*rtless Z/ko Sunday thing, and i do want to preface this all by saying that i do have friends and mutuals who participate(?) in this event(?) so i am in no way meaning to shame anyone or be the fandom's purity police as some anons have been claiming i'm attempting to be, lol

that all being said, i am half East Asian, and upon really thinking on the reasons why this "event" in particular irks me personally, i've come to the following conclusions which i hope you will read through with an open mind.

there's nothing necessarily "wrong" with this "event" to most people. yes, Z/ko is a bunch of pixels. yes, he's a cartoon character. yes, plenty of ppl draw diff characters shirtless. i'm in plenty of different fandoms that draw characters shirtless. whatever. Z/ko, however, is an East Asian coded character so i do believe that i have the right to speak on this

this "event" isn't necessarily "wrong" in terms of the fact that it technically does not actually hurt East Asians physically; however, i do believe that it is a SYMPTOM of a larger issue at hand

of course there are people who are participating in the "event" harmlessly and do not realize that they are worsening such a symptom. but there are others who are doing it intentionally which i think is very worrisome as someone who's an East Asian

the mass consumption of anime, kpop, jpop, kdramas, cdramas, media based on Asian culture such as ATLA, etc, etc, etc has led to a WIDESPREAD issue within fandom regarding the fetishization of East Asians

before you argue with me and say that is not true, i ask that you peruse the fandoms of popular animes or kpop groups (like BTS)

for years, East Asians have dealt with racism and hate and dehumanization regarding sex work and war brides and the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Japanese internment camps and all this other really terrible stuff that i will not get into at the moment because it's too upsetting for me to even discuss (i urge you to Google). that all being said, now, we (East Asians) not only have to deal with the trauma of those sorts of issues, but we also are forced to watch as our people are sexualized and fetishized to disturbing degrees

Sh*rtless Z/ko Sunday is an example of how this phenomenon has manifested itself even in the Z/tara fandom. in the past year or so, a few key members of the Z/tara fandom has always insisted that the Z/kka fandom fetishizes both Z/ko and S/kka. but, if that's the case, then what is Sh*rtless Z/ko Sunday?

it's yet another way that a bunch of pixels that are meant to represent an East Asian coded boy (don't you dare tell me he's "just from the Fire Nation" shut the hell up) wind up fetishized by primarily wh/te women!!

again, i don't give a damn about what you do or what you post as long as it's tagged properly, but i do want you to understand the ramifications of what you post. think of all the East Asians who are literally traumatized because of people constantly pulling their eyes at us or using our cultures/looks as an aesthetic (like the foxeye trend) or fetishizing us and our culture while k/lling us and being racist to us (like the mass shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, where several East Asian women who were working at spas were m/rdered)

even the argument "Z/ko's just a bunch of pixels!!" pisses me off because who do you think he's supposed to represent??!! what do you think he means to all the little East Asian kids who've never seen themselves represented onscreen before?!!!

don't even get me STARTED on the way that K/tara is dealt with within the Z/tara fandom. i'm not brown so i won't speak on such an issue personally, but i do know that many of my friends who are have been incredibly frustrated with the way K/tara is treated in fandom too

if you're wh/te or even just not East Asian, please consider what i've said. before you release content, consider what you're contributing toward the dehumanization and fetishization of East Asians. it's frustrating and painful to constantly see our people or characters who are supposed to be representative of our people fetishized in fandom, esp by wh/te people.

i first joined the IT fandom last january after watching the movies. i read the book about 3 years ago, but i didn’t even realize that there was a fandom to join until i watched the movies! i always loved the story, but idk something about the movies really sparked my interest in IT and that’s when i joined the fandom!

my #1 favourite ship is of course, reddie! i just absolutely love the childhood best friends to lovers trope and i believe they are soulmates. i also really love stanpat, i wish we could have seen more of them but their story of how they met and fell in love warms my heart <3

How it started: After ages of going around and sending myself link after link so I would not lose sight of great posts and until my email inbox was full, I finally decided to make myself an account. That is it. That´s the story.

How´s it going: *looks around* Good, I guess? I mean, I´m still here, so...

What I post: Ufffffffff. Everything and anything that touches or inspires me, I guess? The content here that I reblog is as eclectic as my music tastes. We got witchy stuff, fandom stuff, quotes, life lessons, you name it. I did finally get around to making an additional blog to reblog all of the wonderful pieces of fan content here and leave a comment because till now I have been very neglectful of that. But that is another story...

Aesthetic: Personal? Blog related? I have absolutely no idea... Next question please.

Last thing I googled: That would be the conversion of cm to feet, but if that does not count then it was an anatomical picture of the hymen. There was a conversation ging on in the family and I had to explain the location. It was much easier with visuals, I tell you.

What I am wearing: an oversized shirt with the wolf medallion logo form “The Witcher” series, black shorts and a dark green dressing gown with flowers and pretty little humming birds. Yes, I´m in my sleep wear. No, I am not ashamed. The last couple of days have been hell, I´m still recuperating.

Dream job: Physician, and I´m working hard to get that damn doctors degree.

Favourite animal noise: wolves howling. That moment when it sends chills down your back, when the hairs on your arms stand? Love it and it gets me every time.

Random: If asked a question I start stuttering and mumbling and warbled bla-bla just comes out of my mouth until I try collecting my thoughts. That may take a couple of seconds though.

Dream trip: Japan, Prague, Venice, these three are from the top of my head but otherwise I´d like to travel and see the world. Yes, vague, I know but the world is big and nobody has time to write long lists about this.

Favourite food: Dumplings. Do not, I repeat, do not make me specify which dumplings cause I´ll eat or at least ry them all if given the change. I already diviate from my normal answer of “There is so much good stuff out there, I could never choose”, okay?

Nationality: Welp, before I make this any more complicated I´ll just stick to what is in my passport: AUSTRIAN

I was tagged by @inwiste ily but as soon as you tagged me I forgot every piece of media ever.  I have Definitely forgotten some ppl to list, such is the nature of the game and my goldfish brain.  I’m not even sure these all count as fandom, per se, but they’re from media I like. RIP.

I felt Seen by one depressed and self-destructive lady on a horse, okay? Also, her speech about her place being to be left and burnt in the house when the men no longer had need of it? ouchie

2. Miriel and Indis (The Silmarillion)

They are tied because they are both No-Character-Development Queens and their relationships with finwe and each other are queer bc i said so.  No hate in this house bc Miriel has two hands to hold, ok?  I felt Seen by the depressed lady with a loom.

3. Deryn Sharp (Leviathan Series)

as a child reading this series, I took one look at Deryn’s complicated relationship with gender, said “so we don’t have time to unpack all that” and now I’m queer. 

4. Lavinia (from Ursula K. LeGuin’s novel of the same name)

we love a queen with good characterization who wasn’t thrown under the narrative bus for the male lead.

5. Anahita (Anahita’s Woven Riddle)

Witty women, loving families, nomadic pastoral culture, persian poetry, what’s not to love about this book?

6. Aziza (The Dovekeepers)

This is one of my favorite books of all time.  Prepare to cry.  And in hindsight I’m surprised it took me so long to figure out why transgressive gender performance is so appealing to me.

7. Sophie (Howl’s Moving Castle)

Book and Movie Sophie both have different good qualities, but in general the themes about age and beauty were so refreshing.

8. Bedelia Du Maurier (NBC Hannibal)

She’s not a good person.  She is cowardly, she is violent, she honestly turns my stomach.  Good stuff.  Also she has immaculate strap energy.

9. Katara (ATLA)

I think there were in-show writing issues that she took the brunt of, and fandom isn’t always so kind to her, but I love how complex she is as a character.  

10. Hilda (from the Netflix show of the same name)

She is so sweet, so stubborn, so good-hearted.  I love a character whose good traits are also their bad traits.  She’s a very realistic 12 year old.

For me, feedback and engaging with my followers and friends is what keeps me motivated🥰🥰 But, how do you get followers and friends :00

Starting out in a new fandom can definitely be tough, cause gaining followers and notes takes time. But, what helps with that is basically making content. Post regularly! (And being more active during the day in US time is smart cause most ppl in the fandom are from there). If you put in time and effort to make your content look good, easy to understand and eye catching, you’ll steadily gain followers. Using lots of tags, but correct ones, will also help!

But! You also have to participate! Rbing and actively engaging in other people’s content is key. We are all relying on one another, so if we all put in some effort, then fandom will be a much nicer and vibrant space for everyone. Or, that’s what I think at least!🐇💗 If anyone else has tips for our new member, then please let us know!🌸🌸

i’ve seen quite a bit of meta floating around abt sam’s situation vs tory’s and how that enhances their rivalry but i’ve seen v little abt how how fighting itself means different things to them and how i personally think that rly shows itself in the school brawl so i’m going to babble on abt that for a min.

so to recap what most ppl already pinned down: tory and sam’s beef isn’t just about miguel. far from. tbvh i’d ever argue it’s mostly *not* about miguel but he factors into the situation so strongly bc miguel is the *one* thing tory had that (at the time) sam didn’t. it isn’t just abt him, it’s abt what he represents. it’s abt sam seemingly (re)staking her claim to one of the only good things in tory’s life. from tory’s perspective she has very little in contrast to sam. sam lives in wealthy encino, has her own car, a membership at a country club, and participates in karate bc she’s a legacy child and to do so is at her leisure. her dad has his own personal dojo she can practice in whenever she wants and oh yeah, her lessons are free bc her dad is her sensei. sam who could easily afford karate lessons doesn’t even have to, her dad actually jumps at the chance to give them to her.

tory has to work for everything that’s hers and then some, supporting a mother with frail health and taking care of her bby brother. tory’s life is more precarious and vulnerable than sam’s bc of her financial and living situation, and frankly, she needs self-defense skills more than sam does. remember when she’s at the store with aisha and describes to her how some perv tried to grab her, a move she then blocked? how she stabbed him in the face with her duster/bracelet??

i feel like the gravity of that is lost on most ppl bc in context, tory’s almost bragging abt it and showing off a lil bit. and why wouldn’t she?? she thinks aisha is a badass, she saw her breaking boards blindfolded!!! she thinks aisha is cool and she wants aisha to think she’s cool too, so she’s telling her smth abt herself that she correctly feels aisha would admire. but context aside, it’s v scary and sad that tory was in a situation where she had to do that.

tory had kickboxing training even before she joined cobra kai. going off some of her dialogue to miguel, abt how some ppl in this world have to fight for everything they have, i’m going to assume her safety applies here. given that her financial situation is so precarious, i don’t think tory would’ve taken kickboxing classes unless she felt like she had to. like— don’t get me wrong, tory clearly enjoys fighting. it’s prolly a good way to relieve all the stress she’s under, having head of household responsibilities at 16/17. but we see in s3 when her mom can’t rly work anymore and therefore she has to work even more herself, tory leaves the dojo specifically bc she can’t afford lessons. so that leads me to believe that even if tory enjoys fighting, she wouldn’t spend money on it unless doing so was of necessity to her.

tory does not live in a world of stability. her mother’s health is precarious and unstable. her financial situation is precarious and unstable. even working two jobs she didn’t have enough to cover rent. it was so, so heartbreaking but u could see it in her eyes that she was considering the landlord’s offer. she was considering sleeping with some gross ass adult man who berated and belittled her just to have the stability of a home. imho she would’ve done it if kreese didn’t handle the situation (and he definitely didn’t do so for selfless reasons, but that’s another matter entirely so i’m not gonna go into that).

sam, on the other hand, doesn’t just have stability, she has luxury. again, the big house, her own car, wealthy, supportive, healthy parents who have the time and the means to be there for her and provide her with whatever she wants, let alone needs. fighting is v different for sam. from sam’s perspective, karate is meditation. karate is a way to find balance, to center yourself and spiritually connect with your body. karate is recreation and sport, tournaments where rules ensure everyone’s safety at the end of the day and fighting with honor scores u points while fighting with dishonor gets u disqualified. where fighting with honor is “fair” and fighting without honor is “dirty.” 

now, i know sam *theoretically* understands karate from the self-defense perspective too. bc she’s heard daniel’s stories. bc she used it against kyler when he made her uncomfortable. bc she and robby got into it at the mall to come to demetri’s defense, thereby actively protecting another person. but sam does not have daniel’s lived experiences of struggling with poverty or being put into harm’s way as gravely as daniel was in his youth (at least not until the school brawl, i’m getting there). sam never had to stab a pervert in the face bc he predated upon her and grabbed her. sam did face bullying, yes, but as hurtful as being slut-shamed on the internet is, her safety was not threatened in that situation the way tory’s safety has been threatened, nor the way her father’s safety was threatened in his youth.

i definitely think the context of their situations influences how each thinks of fighting. tory intimately understands fighting for survival in a way sam does not, in a way sam simply cannot relate to. tory doesn’t adhere to the rules the way sam does bc rules have never done shit for her. actually, the rules themselves keep her down, her mother got fired from her job at the restaurant precisely bc she was bringing home leftovers to feed her hungry children. tory has no reason to distinguish between dishonorable fighting and honorable fighting bc at the end of the day, fighting is a necessity for tory in a way that it is not a necessity for sam. tory doesn’t fight to win points or to meditate, or to spiritually connect with her body. tory fights for self-preservation.

from sam’s perspective, tory fights “dirty.” from tory’s perspective, sam lives in a fantasy world where there’s some kind of manufactured distinction between fighting “fair” and “dirty” only for those who have the security and luxury to made that very distinction. to tory, fighting is fighting and that’s that. to sam, fighting is a discipline, an art, a tradition, and is meant to be practiced with a level of etiquette shown to your opponent. bc that’s what tory is to sam, an opponent. but sam isn’t an opponent to tory— she’s an enemy. these are not the same things.

i think the way tory and sam understand fighting really rears its head in the school brawl. tory’s had it with sam, she’s had beef with her since the moment sam accused her of stealing and it reaches its tipping point during the party bc first, sam beats her in the drinking competition, embarrassing her in front of everyone, and then she goes and kisses miguel. who isn’t just tory’s bf, but one of the only good things in her life at that moment.

on top of that, like, okay, tory is v aware miguel used to date sam. so when she’s dating miguel herself, i think she does take a kind of satisfaction in that, in knowing she’s “taken” miguel from the pretty, privileged princess who has everything else, pretty privileged princess who once accused her of stealing and would then go on to mock and ridicule her. i think it increases the sting for tory when sam follows up beating her in the contest with kissing miguel not just bc she’s hurt, but bc it’s an added slap in the face that sam “reclaimed” this one good thing tory thought she’d managed to “take” from her.

come the school brawl and sam is aware tory’s angry. tory announces on the damn loud speaker she’s coming for her, prolly to embarrass her in front of everyone the way sam embarrassed her the night before. fight ensues and they’re matching each other p well, i’d say tory mostly retains the upper hand bc she had the element of offense on her side while sam’s blows were primarily defensive…it’s slightly in tory’s favor but rly could go either way until the point where tory breaks out the spiked knuckle duster/bracelet.

if u look at sam’s face after tory puts it on, like…she’s shocked. she’s frightened. she was not anticipating that at all. tory on the other hand, has a mocking expression and from her tone, i kind of think she’s reveling in sam’s reaction. bc tory knows full well sam has never had to fight the way she has. sam’s never actually had her safety compromised so it’s like. utterly incomprehensible to her the moment it happens. 

tory is the first person who has ever actually threatened sam’s safety and tory knows that, and she relishes it. from tory’s perspective, sam is just as foolish as she is pampered, and she gets to be the one to snatch sam’s sense of security away from her the moment she introduces a weapon to the situation and shows sam; ‘no, this isn’t just a karate match. i actually want to hurt you, and i am going to use whatever i have to do that.’

and…i think she was just trying to hurt sam, personally. ik a lot of the ck fandom thinks tory wanted to kill sam. and i actually think sam herself thinks tory wanted to kill her bc of the visceral reaction she has to tory afterwards. sam has ptsd after the school brawl and it’s not just bc of tory, it’s clearly also bc of what happened to miguel. what robby did to miguel out of anger, anger not created by— but definitely inflamed by —the fact miguel and sam shared a smooch. but sam also has nightmares of tory trying to kill her and it’s tory’s voice that makes her freeze up during the fight at the laser tag place.

i think sam also inevitably associates tory with what happened to miguel, bc while robby, not tory kicked him over the railing, it was tory who started the brawl. and miguel went upstairs specifically bc he was trying to get tory off of sam. he followed them up there bc he was tryna calm tory down. so i think that’s also why sam is so shook by tory after, that inevitable association with miguel’s fall/coma. but i defo think bc tory was the first person who ever actually threatened sam’s safety for real, sam felt like tory was going to kill her. and to be fair, when tory gets sam on the floor and yanks her hair back, it appears that she’s doing so specifically to expose her face/throat area as she pulls her opposite arm back to stab.

sooo with that i 100% understand why so much of the ck fandom and sam herself would think tory was tryna kill her, but i personally don’t think that. i think she was trying to scar her face. i think tory might have specifically been aiming for the mouth bc she wanted to punish sam for the kiss. stabbing/slicing her mouth would be targeting a place on sam specifically associated with the incident that pushed tory’s anger over the edge.

i also think it’s entirely probable tory was just unleashing all of her built up stress on sam during that fight. tory was more aggressive not just bc she’s the one more pissed off but bc her nerves are fucking fried. she throws all of her negative emotions in the brawl and she has infinitely more of those than sam, created by her precarious and fraught living situation wherein she’s had to endure much more hardship than sam and she’s constantly on her guard, fully aware of how fragile any semblance of stability she manages to carve out for herself/her family is. while sam, on the other hand, gets to live in what must appear to tory as this soft, fuzzy fantasy world where mom and dad take care of all the important stuff and sam doesn’t have to worry abt a thing.

i maintain that i don’t believe tory was tryna kill sam, but i do believe she rly wanted to hurt her. and she did…sam is hospitalized after the fight. tory goes back to cobra kai to train for the next one. bc that’s what tory’s life is, one fight after the next. she doesn’t have the luxury of treating karate as a means for meditation or recreation like sam does. and i truly think that impacts that dynamic more than often given credit for.

socknography: the importance of preserving fan creator biographical data

i wrote earlier on utilizing collections and bookmarks to boost the archival power of ao3, and in that post mentioned how i wish authors would fill out their bios so we can preserve fanauthor information as well as we preserve the fics themselves. so, here is my rant about WHY WE ARE SO IMPORTANT.

for my masters thesis i wrote about the layered pseudonymity of fanfiction authors, and after doing a ton of research, i find myself still thinking of the pseudonymous/anonymous divide as it pertains to fic. we have authors we consider “famous” and ones whose followings eclipse that of traditionally published authors, but unlike traditionally published authors, we don’t put a handy bio at the end of our fics. in fact, if you want to find out about the author, you have to hope they’ve linked somewhere to their tumblr or twitter or dreamwidth, or they have consistent pseuds across platforms. and from there, you have to hope they have an ‘about me.’ but most, myself included, don’t.

unlike traditional publication -- where amazon and goodreads and even the back of the book contains biographical info -- and even unlike the rest of fandom archival etiquette -- which, despite having virtually no committed rules still maintains its organizational structure -- there is no standard etiquette on fanauthor biographical data. 

i speculate the reasons fanauthors are hesitant to write their own biographies is very complicated: 

there is no “ask” for it or existing standard. when i publish stories under my real name, i’m required to provide my bio, which contains my accomplishments, where i got my degree, where else i’m published, and my website. all literary author bios follow this formula, so they’re pretty easy to write. other than this post, i have never seen a request for fanauthor bios. so without an editor demanding it, and without a standard formula or platform to draw from, a total lack of information becomes the norm, and almost any info other than the standard “name. age. pronouns. ao3 name. list of fandoms and/or pithy one-liner” of tumblr or occasional ask game is seen as a deviation from the norm. even ask games get a bad rep sometimes, and they’re transitory, a post you see as you’re scrolling through to somewhere else, not static, like a dedicated profile page.

pseudonymity veers too close to anonymity. an anonymous author cannot have a biography. a pseudonymous author can, but biographies may be seen as defeating the purpose of writing under a pseudonym, or multiple pseuds. a sock account is a sock for a reason -- you don’t want it associated with your main. moreover, i believe fandom creates an environment in which to acknowledge your accomplishments and promote your own content is seen as narcissistic. fanfiction can sometimes be seen as a genre of selflessness, donating time and energy into a community centered around a shared canon, not personal gain. to acknowledge the self publicly is to invite attention, and attention is contradictory to anonymity.

shame and humility. the more information you have on the internet, the easier you are to find. very few fanauthors use their real names, or feel comfortable connecting their fan identity to their real one. i hear pretty constantly how often fanauthors hide their fannishness from their coworkers and loved ones, how only the people closest to them know they write/read fanfic. moreover, you might think “my most popular fic only has 10 kudos and 1 comment, nobody wants to know about me” (which is so not true, but i’ll get to that in a minute).

fandom is constantly changing. with a central archive for fanfiction in place, it’s easier now to be in multiple fandoms at once than it ever has been. if you want to read all sugar daddy fics, there’s a tag for that, and if you’re not picky about canon, you have an entire buffet of fandoms to choose from. communities are growing and shifting and changing shape. i move fandoms, and i keep my friends and readers from previous fandoms. i get dragged to new fandoms frequently. my interests and inspirations change, but i don’t erase my history or identity every time i move, i only add to it. i am always betts whether i’m in star wars or the 100 or game of thrones. but if you only read my fic, you don’t know the stories behind it. many people don’t know i entered fandom in the brony convention community in 2012, or that i was sadrobots before i was betty days before i was betts, or how fandom changed my life and led me through a path of personal trauma recovery, or that i co-founded wayward daughters, or ran the fanauthor workshop, or all these other things about fanfic that is not fanfic itself. 

if you are a fan creator, your fannish personal narrative matters. telling your story helps preserve the metatextual history of our genre.

i think constantly about what our genre will look like in 30 or 50 years, if it will be like other genres that began as subversions of the mainstream: comic books, beat literature, science fiction. genres that, at the time involved groups of friends creating stories for each other, bouncing ideas off of one another, experimenting with or distorting other genres, and which became, over time, well-regarded forms with rich histories. 

maybe one day, like the MCU, we’ll have a dedicated production company that churns out adaptations of longform coffee shop aus written between 2009 and 2015. maybe “BNFs” will be read in high school literature curriculums. maybe our work will end up on the real or virtual shelves of our great grandchildren. and if that happens, if fanfic goes entirely mainstream, how will fanfic authorship be perceived? how will fanpeople in 2080, if humanity is still around by then, interact with the lexicon we’ve created and preserved? what would you do if you found out Jane Austen wrote under five different sock accounts across three platforms over the span of twenty years? how would you, a fan of Pride & Prejudice, even begin to find all of her work?

we have so many social constraints pushing against us. there’s purity culture, which encourages further division of identity -- fanauthors may write fluff on their main and have various sock accounts for underage/noncon fics. if you’re a scarecrow, you’re much harder for a mob to attack. there’s misogyny, which dictates women/queer ppl shouldn’t be writing about or indulging in or exploring their sexuality at all. there’s intellectual property and a history of DMCAs, which, although kept at bay by the OTW, may still have influence on the “illegal” mentality of our work. with social armies against us, it’s easier to exist in the shadows, on the fringe. we change URLs based on our moving interests, and split our identities a million different ways, and keep sarcastic “me” tags full of self-deprecating text posts. we are difficult beasts to catch, because we have not been allowed to exist.

i spent a lot of time today googling the word for “pseudonymous biography” and came up empty-handed (if someone knows of an existing word, pls let me know. “pseudography” is apparently a fancy word for a typo; “pseudobiography” is a fake biography), so for lack of anything better, i’ve come up with the term “socknography” because 1) it’s funny and doesn’t sound intimidating, and 2) it encapsulates the sensitive and complicated way fanauthor identifying conventions work. and also i think “fanauthor biography,” “bibliography,” and “profile” just doesn’t cut it for the actual work of these pieces. they don’t necessarily include IRL biographical data, they include more historical/community context than a bibliography, and the words “profile” and “about me” don’t really inspire interaction, or acknowledge the archival importance of this work.

astolat’s fanlore page is my go-to example. astolat writes under multiple pseuds and has major influence in the history of fandom. she’s also a traditionally published author, but you notice, her ofic novels are not mentioned, nor any other real-life identifying information. fanlore has a really good policy on this in place, for those concerned about doxxing. 

(moreover, i am not suggesting you centralize your socks. they’re socks for a reason. but most everyone has a main, and that main identity has a story.)

there are 2 existing spaces to preserve socknographies. 

fanlore, a wiki owned by the OTW, you can make an account and create a user page (which is different than a “person” page) using a user profile template

ao3′s “profile” page, which is a big blank box in which anything goes

(i’m not including tumblr on this list because i don’t think it’s a stable platform.) 

fanlore’s template is straight to the point and minimal, which doesn’t really invite narrative the same way a literary bio would. ao3′s big blank box leaves us with the question -- wtf do i say about myself? how do i say it? how much is too much? and because of that, most profiles are either blank or only include a policy on translations/podfic/fanart, and maybe links to tumblr and twitter. but let me tell you, if i have read your fic and taken the time to move over to your profile, you better believe i am a fan. and as a fan, i want to Know Things.

introduction (name/alias, age, location, pronouns, occupation)

accomplishments (degrees, personal history)

fan history (fandoms you’ve been in, timeline as a fan, how you were introduced to fandom/fanfiction, what does fandom mean to you -- this is where your fan narrative goes)

fandom participation (popular fics/posts, involvement in fan events/communities, side blogs, interviews, etc. 3 & 4 might be one and the same for you)

spotlight (which of your fics are most important to you/would you like others to read and why? what are the stories behind your favorite fics you’ve written?)

find me elsewhere* (links to tumblr, twitter, insta, etc.)

policies on fanart, fanfic of fic, podfics, and translations

i’ll be working on filling this out for my own profile as an example, but you can also see how my @fanauthorworkshop participants filled out their fanauthor spotlights, and the information they provided. obviously, you should only share that which you feel comfortable sharing, and as your fandom life changes, your narrative will change too. it’s not much different than updating a CV or resume.

tl;dr the goal is to provide a self-narrative of your fan life/identity for posterity. who are you and why are you a fanperson? why do you create fan content? what are you proud of and what do you want to highlight to others? who are you in this space?
