An Old Fashioned Meet Cute

A/N: hi! this is my first fic here and i hope you like it. comments and constructive criticism is very much appreciated just please be nice and i tried not to describe nor reader nor the Hilda character too much apart from the fact that they are plus size so it can cater to more people (altough the Hilda character is a white woman originally, I left that out because I wanted everyone to be able to read it) :D. and a huge thank you to @divine-mistake for encouraging me to make this blog and post my fics. ily Tay <3, this one's for you.

Pairing: Bucky Barnes x fem!plus size Reader

Summary: Bucky didn’t remember much of his life before the war. Not as much as he would like, anyway. But he was content to at least have remembered something. The memories of his teenage shenanigans with Steve always made him laugh. But there was a memory that he didn’t even know it was on his mind until that day when he accompanied Steve to the thrift shop. And until an Avengers party, where he met you.

“Steve, come on… Shouldn’t you be showing me the wonders of the modern world?”, he mocked. He knew Steve was doing his best, he did. But he knew that this wasn’t just a friends’ afternoon. And Bucky didn’t need a babysitter.

“I will! I just thought it would be nice to see something less overwhelming first and Sam told me a thrift store would be a nice place to start. Most of this stuff is new to us anyway”, Steve said, picking up a CD of a shelf.

“Yeah, ok”, he mumbled. The things he did for Steve. He mindlessly wandered through the little cluttered store, browsing the shelves full of knick knacks. He saw vinyls, old books, a great variety of toys, some paintings and an old fashioned vanity, with an old mirror, a few vintage perfume bottles, and… Oh.

“Steve?”, he said, picking up the old calendar that was propped up against the stained mirror. Carefully, he lifted the calendar up, looking at his friend. He had seen it before, he knew he did. He flipped through it as he waited for Steve to make his way across the store, careful to not bump in any of the tables containing delicate porcelain tea pots. His eyes scanned through the cover, a delicately painted picture of a curvy woman and with the saying “HILDA, 1940’s calendar” in bold red letters above it.

“Oh wow”, Steve let out a belly laugh. “You remember when we stole some of these? Man, we even took these to war”, he said. He started to remember. Him and Steve running, each one with a calendar in hand, flipping through the pages, Steve whining that he would never find a girl like that. He didn’t even think twice before taking it to the counter, with Steve giggling like a school girl behind him.

“For the memories, punk”, he said in a stern voice and a frown, but with pink dusted cheeks.

“Of course”, Steve said in a mocking voice.

“So, Tony’s throwing a party next weekend”, Steve said as he entered the training room.

“I prefer the thrift store”, Bucky mumbled, without tearing his eyes from the punching bag.

“Come on, Buck. I think it will be good for you to go”, Steve said. “It will be something small, Tony will introduce the new team assistant, so no eyes will be on you”, that got Bucky’s attention.

“Small?”, he said, pushing his hair from his face.

“Very”, Steve assured, but he had that look that Bucky knew very well from his young years; the look he would get when he was about to pick a fight. He was up to no good. But he didn’t want another trip to a dusty thrift store.

“Yeah, sure”, he mumbled.

You were shaking in your boots. Yeah, you knew that you would work for them, which meant that you inevitably would have to attend this kind of things. But this wasn’t like your former office jobs, no. You work for the Avengers now.

“You can do this. You have to. Do it for the paycheck”, you said, trying to reassure yourself as you shakily applied mascara. As you browsed through your wardrobe, you let out a sigh. You remembered shyly asking for advice on what to wear from Natasha, but you took it with a grain of salt. She could wear a potato sack and still look gorgeous, and you were… Well, a potato. You knew this was another test. If you couldn’t handle all eyes on you and the eventual bickering that was about to happen, you were not fit for the job. But damn, you at least expected a few weeks of taking care of documents and serving coffee before a party. In a room. With the, quoting the tabloid you read that very morning “super team that saves the world and looks hot doing it!”. You were a pretty confident person. But this… Anyone would be nervous.

“You can do this”, you told yourself one more time before heading out.

When you got to the party, not everyone was there. You politely greeted everyone with a nod, and gave your name to the ones you didn’t have the pleasure to meet yet.

“You, pick your poison”, Tony Stark pointed at you while walking to the bar.

“No, thank you, Mr. Stark, I won’t be drinking tonight”, you managed to say, silently thanking all the gods above (even the one that was sitting not too far from you) that you managed to hold back the quiver in your voice.

“She doesn’t want to be vulnerable around us. Smart, I like her”, said Natasha. Sometimes you wonder if she was a telepath like Wanda.

“Is there anything wrong, Y/N? I sense that you are uneasy”, asked Vision, with those glassy unblinking eyes. You wondered if he was in your mind that very moment.

“Gee, I wonder why”, said Rhodes, before taking a sip of his drink.

“I’m okay, just… A bit nervous, that’s all”, you said.

“Well, then you definitely need a drink”, said Tony, handing you a glass of champagne that no doubt cost the same as your previous paycheck.

Soon enough, the awkwardness made way to pleasant conversation. You laughed as you listened to their banter. It wasn’t like any business party you ever attended. No, it was more like a family gathering than anything.

The sounds of the elevator doors opening caught you attention as three men wide as refrigerators walked in, followed closely by a pretty young woman. Of course you knew them. You read all about them. Especially The Winter Soldier, the little devil on your shoulder taunting you by remembering you of every single time you talked to your friend about your crush on him.

“Sorry we’re late guys, Steve went to pick me up before the party and we had dinner”, said the blonde, linking her arm with Steve Rogers himself.

“Nah, Sharon, don’t cover his ass. We were late because the three of us had to wrestle Barnes into changing out of that old ass Henley”, said Sam.

Instantly, Tony and Natasha cheered and raised their glasses, making you laugh.

“Yeah, yeah, very funny”, said a gruff voice coming from the bar, making you turn your head, seeing Bucky Barnes open a beer bottle with his vibranium hand. 'How did he sneak past everyone?', your thoughts were interrupted as you took him in. You wanted to personally thank Sam, Steve and Sharon for making him wear that tight fitting black shirt.

“Well, Y/N, here’s Capsicle, Mrs. Capsicle, New Captain, and Snowflake. Guys, this is Y/N, the new assistant. Oh, and there’s Spider Boy but he’s on curfew, Strange had to hop out of the dimension and Scott but he’s… He’s somewhere out there being small, I don’t know. Watch were you step, just to be safe”, said Tony

“Hi”, you gave a shy wave, being greeted right back.

If it wasn’t for the serum, Bucky is absolutely sure he would have a heart attack on the spot. You were wearing red heels, a form fitting black pencil skirt and a white button up blouse and he could see your curves, your strong arms, your thighs. You looked absolutely amazing. You look like one of the girls that Bucky would’ve rushed to ask for a dance back in the day. But what really made him stare is the fact that your body type looked eerily similar to the character of the calendar he spent an embarrassing amount of time staring.

As your eyes scanned the room as you were bombarded with questions, Bucky made sure to avoid your gaze, looking everywhere but your face: his shoes, the ceiling, the armrest on the couch, Steve’s shit eating grin. Oh. So THAT’S what it was about. Little shit.

Even avoiding your gaze, he made sure to keep his ears open. A man could be interested, right?

By the time the party ended, Thor and Bruce were sleeping, Tony was buzzed walking around singing Iron Maiden, Natasha and Sharon were talking, Steve and Sam were giggling like two school girls, Rhodes went home and Vision and Wanda were talking and looking out the window to the New York skyline.

Which left you – and Bucky – alone.

“Uhhh. I guess I’ll start cleaning, then”, you said. Your face was on fire. The only person that you were sure didn’t like you and you were awkwardly standing, not knowing where to look and what to say. It didn’t help that you were attracted to him but damn it, you were not going to lose this opportunity because of a school girl crush. So you decided to keep yourself occupied by taking some empty glasses and bottles from the table and taking them to the kitchen.

“Oh, come on, Y/N! Let the cleaning crew deal with this in the morning!”, said Natasha.

“No, no, I don’t mind. I like to keep myself busy”, you said with a smile. Technically, it wasn’t a lie. You only hoped she couldn’t see how awkward you were.

“I’ll help”, he said, picking up some glasses and following you.

“You can pick up more of these glasses and I can start washing them”, he said. “I- I noticed you got your nails done, so…”, he said, and you shyly looked away while thanking him and making your way out of the kitchen.

In no time, the room was getting emptier. Vision and Wanda went home and Thor took Banner back to New Asgard. And you were almost done with the dishes, having also gotten rid of most of the empty food containers. As you both cleaned, you and Bucky got a bit more comfortable with each other.

“I’m sorry for seeming a bit standoffish earlier”, he said suddenly. “I’m not used to parties and I don’t know how new people will react to me. Especially pretty women”, you smiled at the compliment, but felt your heart ache. You were so caught up in your insecurities that you didn’t even consider his side of things.

“You don’t have to be sorry. I don’t know how you feel but by what I’ve seen and heard, you have a family here. You’re out there fighting to save the world. Trying your best. This is redemption enough, don’t you think?”, you said as you put the glasses to dry, missing the awestruck look that Bucky sent you, a goofy smile making its way into his features. “Okay, you wait here and I’ll get what’s left”.

You were back in no time. “Okay, so just more two champagne flutes and one plate left”, you said but before you could give the dishes to Bucky, you slipped, and if it wasn’t for Bucky’s reflexes, you would’ve fallen hard. You yelped as the sound of breaking glass hit your ears and for a second you two just stared at each other, before Bucky pulled you closer and back to a standing position.

“Thanks”, you said as he helped you straighten up.

“Your ankle, does it hurt?”, he said.

“Uh, no, I don’t think so”, you said.

“Ah, I think it does. And I can’t let a dame go home alone on a hurt ankle”, he said, giving you a dashing smile.

“You know what, now that you’ve said it, it hurts really bad”, you said, catching on. “You know what’s amazing for a bad ankle?”, you asked, and the gentle smile in your lips and the mischievous glint in your eyes made his heart piston inside of his chest.

"What?", he said softly, stepping closer, like you were sharing secrets.

“Ice cream and a walk on the park. Very therapeutical”, you said, making Bucky laugh.

Before you knew it, Bucky had already scooped you up into his arms and rushedly announced that you had slipped and fell, whisking you away into the elevator.

“Dude, that took all night”, said Sam. “This is the smooth guy you told me about?”, he said, while Steve and Sharon laughed.

While everyone got ready to go home, Scott came out of the kitchen in his Ant-Man suit eating some leftovers.

“Someone owes me 20 bucks for making her trip”.

An new director ruined the perfect job for me and my coworkers, and now every chance we get we ruin her.

This first started about 7 years ago, when I worked at a catering company for a fairly large university. The company was part of the school’s dining services, so it was basically just fancier dining hall food, but it was an amazing job to have as a student. The catering director was an awesome guy, and the supervisor was just as good. We had an excellent team dynamic, we had lots of fun, we got jobs done, and we actually brought in a lot of business. Most of the work was catering university events, so we got to work at film screenings and and workshops and stuff, plus the really great summer concert series the school sponsors, and we got to watch the events for free. Plus I got to take home piles of leftovers, which as a poor college kid was a dream come true. I worked there for a couple of years, until it all started to unravel. That’s where this revenge starts.

The director of dining services was a nice lady, but she was retiring. The school hired a new director and at first we thought she was going to be a good addition. She was younger, really active in getting to know everyone, and she had tons of neat ideas to make the food better and healthier. But once she started, for some reason she decided our little catering crew were a waste of resources. She made it her mission to make our jobs miserable, in the name of ‘cutting costs’. The catering director asked around, there was no initiative to cut our costs, because we were bringing in so much business. But kept cutting hours, and then she started coming after employees’ jobs. She fired half our staff, and then came after us for taking too long to work events...because we were down to 8 people from 25. Eventually she took it one step too far and fired the awesome catering director. Then she fired the supervisor. Which meant that the employee with the most seniority was ME, a 21 year old slacker student who only worked part time and wasn’t allowed to purchase anything or work during my class hours. I wasn’t even allowed to drive a university van! It was literally not possible for me to do what she wanted me to do. So I quit. And the few people left quit too. It was to date the best job I’ve ever had, and when i had to quit I was livid. Here’s where it gets good.

The catering crew all went their separate ways. We still keep in touch and hang out, but everyone got new jobs. The other students and I graduated and moved on. This all happened in a decent sized city, but there just aren’t a ton of dining services director positions in the area. There’s a casino, there’s a couple medium sized hotels, maybe a few assisted living places and event centers, but that’s it. And it just worked out that the catering crew got jobs at most of those places, since we came with a great reputation. I worked as a food and beverage manager at one of the larger hotels, and one day while I was up at the front desk someone came in to drop off an application. It was the dining services director who ruined everything! I guess the university wasn’t happy with her after the debacle with catering and they let her go, and now she was putting out applications everywhere she could.

She didn’t recognize me. She thought I was a front desk person and rudely threw her application to me, told me to make sure the managers got it. I smiled, I said of course they would...and after she left I put the application through the shredder. I also tried to block her number on the hotel phones, and left a note about her and how rude she was at the front desk, just in case she came back. Then I went back to my office and called up everyone from catering who I was still in touch with, warning them about what the old director was up to. The old catering director was a manager at the casino, and when she applied there she mysteriously never heard back. Two people worked in HR at other hotels, and she never heard back from them either. Assisted living center? Never heard back. The event centers weren’t hiring, and they did NOT keep her application on file. She tried for months without any luck. We warned everywhere we could about her, and she didn’t find a job for months.

I got a text from my old supervisor the other day. She’d gone to a Taco Bell for lunch and saw the old dining services director. She went from making upwards of $150,000 at the university to being an assistant manager at a really mediocre Taco Bell. Apparently she’s gained a ton of weight, and she’s going through a nasty divorce. I want to feel bad for her, but I don’t really. She could have kept her cushy job if she’d just left our little crew alone. But she cost a bunch of hard working people their hard earned jobs, she cost me and other students our desperately needed income, and we just made sure to pay her back for what she deserved.

The location was great! You can easily walk to downtown from there. The waiters at the restaurant were very sweet. The biscuits were amazing! The bed was better than expected but probably older.

Bed was comfortable, people were so friendly and our waitress for breakfast was the best. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will come back.

There was an elevator to get your stuff up to the room and the view was wonderful.

The room was good sized and had someplace comfortable to sit besides the bed. Loved the little dog that lives there on the property. The manager was super nice and helpful.

Excellent hotel! Friendly service, nice clean room, nicest hotel I ever stayed. And the bed was comfortable. Also loved it was within walking distance of downtown Eureka Springs. Would stay here again.

The facility is not opulent, but it was clean and welcoming. The owner is very personable and talked with me at some length bout the local music scene and things to do. The location was very good and the overall vibe is gitchy – much more interesting than the sterile chain hotels.

We enjoyed the access through our room to the back balconey. The room actually smelled great and not like a hotel room.

The rooms were very clean. The owners were very cordial and friendly. Continental breakfast was served each morning with everything you could want to start your day. The motel is perfectly located at the start of HWY 23, so I didn’t have to dawdle through town every time I went out for a ride on those twisty Arkansas roads. Special towels were provided to wipe down the motorcycles each morning so as not to get the guest bath towels all greasy.

Very clean and friendly. Parking lot was full and the manager came out and moved her car and had us park right in front of the lobby. Great stuff

Very quiet with scenic view in the back overlooking the pool. Extremely clean and neat! Don’t worry about the older look of the hotel- the rooms are updated and our room fridge was way bigger than what we had at the Hilton. Plus we had a microwave! Continental breakfast included and the coffee was very good!

Tom and Debbie were the nicest hosts ever…. We will never stay anywhere else but here on every return trip to Eureka Springs! They will really go well out of their way to make your stay as best as possible. We were both extremely impressed.

The bed was great, the over all experience was wonderful.

This was a honeymoon trip. There was champagne and chocolates waiting on us. The owners gave us cheesecake and we were left orange juice for breakfast.

I discovered them recently and ordered some stuff. It was like a few skirts and pants that I really needed that came in 5x...I was so excited to find plus size clothes friendly to my body size and sensory issues not from Walmart (because typically that is what my family can afford, and I'll wear like the same clothes from Walmart or the occasional thrift shop for years until they start ripping apart because of my sensory issues)...The stuff I bought fits amazing (I literally was giggling I was so excited how comfy it was).

But now I've actually looked into them more and I feel bad...(although not sure if Walmart is any better ethically, really) 😬. The way they change their styles out fast made me feel like "I gotta buy this right now!" and looking at their website for some reason I thought "oh they must be pretty legit, Katy Perry works with them" (which I don't even like her idk why I thought that lol).

I belatedly discovered this webseries, and it resurrected (see what I did there?) my love for Wednesday and how the Addams Family canon runs on the endless possibilities of this loving, happily eccentric family being 100% true to themselves and the world just having to deal with it. The show was everything I never knew I wanted till I watched it, the perfect blend of Addams-macabre and cozy slice of life with bonus Wednesday navigating the world alone, without always knowing her family will back her up, and it made me crave more of adult Wednesday’s mini adventures in LA. For this canon, I’m good with gen or, if you want to write that, more of Wednesday’s adventures in dating guys who really aren’t up to the challenge, and you can absolutely have Wednesday interact with OCs I haven’t listed as part of a pairing. I’m keeping the prompts pretty short, just to (hopefully) pique your creativity, as I expect I will love any way you make these or any similar scenarios play out:

-Wednesday goes to IKEA

-More of Wednesday’s interactions with the nice interns at her receptionist job. Maybe they invite her out to happy hour, or to the beach or a club. Or maybe we get to eavesdrop while they shoot the breeze on their lunch break, possibly over barbecue-chicken pizza from CPK.

-More of Wednesday’s gigs. She already babysits and walks other people’s dogs, what else might she do for extra cash that would be both really common and seemingly ill-suited to Wednesday, except she totally makes it work for her? Cat sitting (especially if the cat belongs to someone incredibly rich whose house is full of secrets – and expensive things for the cat to knock over), driving an Uber/Lyft, becoming an AirBnB host, catering/server, working the late shift in a New Age/occult supply store where none of the woo is real…?

-Or, alternately, Wednesday finds a career that is perfect for her, in which she can have success and respect. What ever could that be and still fit into the non-Addams world?

-Wednesday tries speed dating

-Or, she runs into Brian a.k.a. chains guy (I cackle with glee every time I rewatch the bit when he tries to kiss her at the pet store) a third time – how does it not go quite as he wanted or expected this time?

-Wednesday’s family comes out to sunny, plastic, image-conscious LA to visit her and make sure she’s doing alright. She gives them a tour of the city, and LA will never be the same again.

-Wednesday takes an evening class, or goes back to school part time, or enrolls in an online degree program

-Wednesday takes a road trip, alone or with her apartment mates/colleagues/Brian/strangers she met for carpooling purposes. Bonus points if you work in real roadside attractions, or tourist traps, or famous sites/landscapes.

-It’s Dia de Muertos, and Wednesday goes out to celebrate and soak up the atmosphere. It may or may not live up to her expectations.

-If you wanted to get a bit meta and/or enjoy playing around with different formatting, what does Wednesday’s Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook/Tindr look like? Or, Wednesday gets tasked with updating company social media at her receptionist job, and she does it with her own special flair.

American Gods (TV)

Laura Moon/Mad Sweeney

Genres: Action/adventure, AU - canon divergence, Canon-style plot, Character development, Getting together, Smut, Worldbuilding

Let me preface this by saying how much I appreciate that you are willing to write for an ongoing canon! I love this pairing, and while most of my prompts are basically the same ones I’ve used in exchanges before S2 (which I am watching) started airing, let me assure you that I am 1000% fine with your fic getting jossed, or including a divergence from what we already know or how things happen in canon. You can work with the canon -- or as much of it as we have by the time you’re done writing -- or diverge in a way that works for your story. Really truly honestly it’s all fine since you are writing for an active canon, and I really truly honestly appreciate you wanting to tackle this! Canon divergences and canon-flavored-if-not-entirely-compliant stories are my jam, so please don’t feel anxious as the canon keeps unfolding, nor pressed to keep up with S2 if you can’t or don’t want to watch it right now. (I tried to keep S2 spoilers to a minimum in my prompts, but there are some spoilers.)

So *clears throat*

I ship it. Yes I do. They had me at “gimme-my-coin-dead-wife”-flicks-him-into-wall. The snarky road trip was the best thing I never knew I wanted until it happened, and I adored every second of it. They’re both such assholes and so fascinating, even if they start to mellow toward each other a bit toward the end of S1, and all the gods/magic/resurrection stuff swirling around them begs to be explored further. Also I love love love how their dynamic is about equal parts spikiness, pathos, and humor (they’re funny! and the canon doesn’t shy away from putting them in ludicrous situations), and it weaves seamlessly between those three. Plus she’s half his size yet can and does beat him up with literally one finger, and then there’s the angst of he having killed her, feeling really guilty about it, and then bringing her back.

Please give me either missing scenes from the road trip (if you can work in a divergence, that’s great - for example, I like Salim, but if you want to have him boot Sweeney and Laura to the curb and go off on his own, or Sweeney to boost his taxi before Salim catches them, or whatever else to have those two alone, go for it!), or a S1 divergence (instead of going to Ostara, they go where? to see whom? about getting Laura resurrected) or something about these two post-S1/during-S2:

-Laura discovers (how? you decide!) that Sweeney gave her back the coin after their accident – whatever happens next, some punching may be involved.

-Wednesday’s big war finally comes, and “don’t you dare die on me, you asshole” is a line either Sweeney or Laura (or both) might say to each other.

-Laura asked “What does Wednesday have to lose?” and the answer is…? (Yes, give me that sweet poetic justice. One possibility, though not remotely the only one, but as of S2E3 Laura is technically a god-killer...)

-On a similar note, Wednesday told that luckless cop that Sweeney had been against the big gods’ war from the start, and while Wednesday lies, Sweeney definitely seems to be participating out of a sense of obligation and lingering guilt over the war he ran from long ago, rather than lust for a good fight or even a dominant death wish. What if he decided to hell with Grimnir and his war and his having Sweeney kill random people? I’m guessing Sweeney too drank three glasses of mead so he can’t back out without dire consequence - but he does have a fierce, dead woman in his corner.

-They go to some as-yet-unnamed old god (feel free to bring in whatever mythology you want) in order to bring Laura back to life. Between Sweeney’s mouth and temper, and Laura’s mouth and temper, it doesn’t go well. Now one or both of them are in big magical trouble with a pissed-off deity and have to get themselves/each other out of it.

-Things happen and Laura finds herself in the position to throw Sweeney under the bus but also help/save him, and while he knows it’s only karma, he can still be pissed about it - how do they navigate this?

-Laura gets fully alive again, but traces of her (un)dead state remain – what are they, how does she cope, what price did she/he/they have to pay for her resurrection, and how does their relationship change? I’d especially be curious how it would work if they’re already a sorta-maybe-item and *then* she’s alive again and it’s weird in a new way.

-For reasons I’ll leave up to you, Sweeney and Laura have to stay put in a single place for a while and end up essentially cohabiting, regardless of what their relationship is at that point. Take “cohabiting” as literally or as creatively as you want -- in any case, I’m sure it will be marvelously disastrous and amazing.

-Slight or major AU from the opening of “The Ways of the Dead”: Laura has hitchhiked with Sweeney instead of going off in a huff with Wednesday, or she otherwise gets to New Orleans sooner, and she and Sweeney tear up the town together. Gimme bar fights, carnival shenanigans, backstage craziness with the Christian rock band (Sweeney seems to have a backstage pass on a lanyard around his neck when Laura finds him)… Maybe they even cross the paths of some loa and it doesn’t get all angsty (for what it’s worth, I think the reason the sex magic didn’t bring Laura back to life was because she couldn’t accept the truth(s) revealed during the astral-plain sex – see how she defaults straight to “this is all Wednesday’s evil plan” the morning after – not because the loa fucked them over as Sweeney said). They were actually getting along nicely in those first couple of scenes, only ribbing each other a little while still being their grouchy selves, before they got to Le Coq Noir. I wouldn’t have minded seeing some more of that.

-All the old gods hide their true appearance to an extent. A situation arises in which Laura sees Sweeney’s true, or at least old, self (I’m thinking of his surprise!poignant monologue about when he used to be a king, and the glimpse of him in full Celtic warrior mode in the S2 teaser). Or Wednesday’s war ends in victory, meaning the old gods again get belief, worship, and sacrifices. How does Laura, the ultimate skeptic even when she’s on the other side of the mirror, react? How does this new knowledge and new reality change her opinion of/attitude to Sweeney? Or to flip that around, if Sweeney were again relevant and believed-in, would that actually change his bad attitude and fix his issues (my guess is it would be complicated)?

-The power of names: for all his “dead wifeing,” there comes a time when Sweeney (has to) call her by her actual name, and that’s a tricky moment for them to navigate. Or, Mad Sweeney is almost certainly not his actual name, since true names have great magical power and so must be kept secret; Laura discovers or learns his name, from someone else or from himself; what does she do with that knowledge? Or, Sweeney gets to say “cunt” in a situation (sexual or otherwise) where, not only does Laura not peel his lips from his gums, but she finds that she can’t object, even though she knows that he knows that he’s getting away with it.

-So far in canon, it’s pretty clear that Sweeney has a lot of complicated but sincere feelings for Laura. But Laura is still pretty focused on Shadow (or rather her idealized vision of Shadow and what their relationship might yet be), whom she seems to equate with her own lost-maybe-to-be-regained life, although she’s starting to soften toward Sweeney as she realizes he’s doing things for her that are not all about getting his coin back (and her sparring match with Wednesday in “Muninn” may finally force her to accept that her relationship with Shadow died alongside her and Robbie on that road in Indiana). Tell me the story of how Laura stumbles her way to starting to feel more complex, maybe kinder or softer, really annoying for her blunt-force-trauma-personality things about Sweeney and about the notion that her dynamic with him is different from the way she tended to use men for her convenience without really letting them in in the past. Also I’m pretty sure that even if they felt the same – or sorta in the same ballpark – about each other, their relationship would still run on a lot of conflict, and I would so be here for it.

-On that note: in “Munnin” it also becomes clear that Laura has, without realizing it herself, started to rely on Sweeney. The “I trusted you” line made me think, whoa she’s too mad to catch herself doing it but this is huge for Laura, and the fact that she goes off with Wednesday (!) basically because she’s mad at Sweeney because she thinks he’s prioritizing his debt to Wednesday over her… Yeah, I would like to see that explored some more and/or to see Laura and Sweeney get to a point where they trust each other and rely on each other, and know it and accept it, however difficult the getting there and being there may be for them.

-And since I’m on the subject of Laura, you know how she’s not actually an abrasive bitch all the time to everyone? And when she is, the people on the receiving end of it sometimes richly deserve it, and anyway it’s refreshing to see a female character who doesn’t bother flirting and accommodating others for the sake of social harmony? As much as I enjoy watching her rip into people (ahem, Sweeney), I also love it when she acts differently, like her genuine interest in getting to know Salim and her joy in seeing him again in S2, or her running passive-aggressive battle of wills with Wednesday, or even her general disaffection and numbness in “Git Gone.” Her beginning to feel sympathy for Sweeney and her anger and disappointment when she feels let down by him are a part of that, and I’d love to see all that explored more. Nuance! Give me all the nuance and seeming contradictions in both Laura and Sweeney’s characters!

-My perfect AG spinoff would basically be Sweeney and Laura tooling around America, looking to get her resurrected (whether they succeed or not is up to you), stealing ever more ridiculous vehicles, arguing/fighting and having those pesky moments where vulnerability and genuineness creep in – and fucking. So yessiree I’d be down for porn, including “it’s technically necrophilia/zombiesex” porn.

-All the petty, ridiculous ways in which Sweeney’s bad luck manifests itself make me laugh (can’t help it, won’t even try), and I’m down for more variations on that theme.

-If you wanted to throw in some worldbuilding, maybe something exploring living death. Magical bargains. What kind of favor did Sweeney do for Ostara that would be worth her bringing someone back to life as repayment? What other powers might Sweeney have (he doesn’t seem on a par with someone like Wednesday and Ostara, nor is he really a god, more a mythological being/kinda-deified former-mortal)? How long can a dead wife keep going before she’s “soup”? What other superhuman abilities might dead!Laura have? Can the dead do magic? What even are the rules governing and the limits of different beings’ magical abilities?

If it helps your inspiration, you can find some of my meta and lots of tag-burbling about these two here. I have read the book though I remember it only in bits and pieces, and while I prefer the show characters and the fact that they get thrown together, you can use or riff on book material if you want. With reference to one of my DNWs, for this canon, describing Laura’s physical decay is totally fine. Also, Shadow/Laura don’t interest me except as a part of Laura’s backstory (so if your story wants to include Laura figuring out or having already figured out that pinning all her hopes on Shadow to make everything right is unrealistic, unfair, and not how it works – by all means, go for it!), and Shadow/Sweeney interest me not at all.

My one canon-specific, really strong DNW for this pairing is this: I’m not into Laura being Essie’s reincarnation/descendant or – as fanon suggests and canon hints she may be – some sort of reincarnation of Sweeney’s wife from back when he was a king in old Ireland. Reincarnation/“new love looks like old love”/“lost love found again” plots bore me, and I don’t enjoy ships that hinge on characters being somehow destined to be together. Characters having agency is my jam as much as canon divergences are. Or if your fic really needs to go there, please please please don’t dwell on the Laura-Essie-Sweeney’s-wife-of-old thing, a brief mention would be more than enough. I’m certain Laura would have neither time nor patience for the notion that Destiny Fate and All That Jazz threw her together with ginger minge, and even if it were technically true, she’d still want this relationship to work on her terms – and Sweeney obviously has a problem with Laura’s cheating, her relationship with Shadow, her personality (though he also recognizes they’re alike in many ways), and all that maps onto his anger and sadness over becoming irrelevant over time, so it’s not just about Laura. So yeah, let them be their own (grumpy, spiky, dysfunctional) people, and let Laura’s dynamic with Sweeney not be shaped solely by his past and his issues.

Cabin Pressure

Carolyn Knapp-Shappey & Arthur Shappey & Martin Crieff & Douglas Richardson

Genres: Action/adventure, Canon-style plot, Humor, Slice of life

I just want more canon-y stories with their loopy humor and their weird yet loving family dynamics among the crew. Shenanigans in mid-flight or in the tedium which precedes and the tiredness which follows them. Someone smuggles (knowingly or not) an exotic animal on-board, legal, security, medical and/or slapstick chaos ensues. A mechanical, passenger- or smuggled-goods-caused problem arises and is solved during a journey. More games played on board GERTI. Playing around with a specific destination, like in many episodes, would be a plus. If it helps inspire you, my favorite episodes in terms of tone and content are: Douz, Gdansk, Johannesburg, Limerick, Ottery St. Mary, Uskerty, and Xinzhou.

For this canon, I prefer gen with maybe, if you want to go there, some Douglas/Carolyn on the side. That’s a ship I always thought had potential – they understand each other very well and trust each other... some of the time, but they’re both also snark-masters, tend to look down on anyone not as smart or quick-witted as they (Arthur being the sole – occasional – exception), and are really good about keeping their defenses up against other people. But I requested the gen group, and I definitely want the gen group – please don’t feel pressed to write the ship, that’s just a wild suggestion I threw out there.

Moonlighting (TV)

David Addison/Maddie Hayes

Genres: Action/adventure, AU - canon divergence, Canon-style plot, Established relationship, Getting together, Humor, Mystery/procedural, Slice of life

I osmosed tons about this show over the years but didn’t get around to watching it myself till recently. And then I loved it much more than I thought I would! Yeah, sure, some of it’s dated, and some of it’s ropey in terms of how the characters interact ( all the casual sexism and battle of the sexes stuff are very 80s indeed), but the chemistry! the banter! the funny! the shiptease! Gimme!

I tried to come up with lots of prompts, but ended up with a list of stuff I love about the show – and would love to see in fic – with some prompts mixed in. Hope it helps! Basically, give me as much of the show’s “flavor” as you can, and I’ll be happy.

My two DNW requests for this canon would be: please ignore everything that happens post-S3 (so if you want to write Maddie/David in the aftermath of their resolving their UST, please go ahead with the canon divergence of your dreams, I bet it’ll be a million times better than canon), and please don’t have secondary characters (Agnes and Herbert, or Maddie and David’s relatives and exes) hijack the story. They can be in it, but I really do want a David/Maddie story, despite the canon sometimes sidelining them due to behind-the-scenes shenanigans.

Prompts/likes:

-all the banter, wordplay, innuendo, puns, comic repetition

-arguments – those long, explosive, funny, overlapping, always hilarious fights they have

-breaking the fourth wall – yes, please. In canon, they often seem to know they’re fictional characters but ones that exist in the real world, with studio lots and such. Do they now know they’re characters in a fanfic of fictional characters that also exist in the real world, or something even more mind-screwy?

-David calling Maddie “blondie blond” – it just makes me laugh – and Maddie calling him “Addison” when angry but “David” when worried or when shit hits the fan

-random cultural nods – off the top of my head, canon referenced Spanish poetry, objectivism, American realist drama, Dr. Seuss, Shakespeare, of course all the Hollywood tropes and genres; go high or low culture, go famous or obscure, even if I don’t know the reference, I want it! Ditto if you decide on a plot that parodies and pays homage to a cultural landmark story (The Silence of the Lambs? Much Ado about Nothing? A Hitchcock movie? Something else?), I’d love it!

-speaking of: I love the pun-tastic episode titles referencing everything under the sun

-all the canon-era detail which both takes me back and jars me with how much things have changed: people smoking in public buildings, seeing someone off at the boarding gate, dial and push-button telephones, VHS rentals, no cellphones/internet, all the 80s fashion and permed hair… Throw it in just for kicks or weave it into the plot (e.g., they’re following someone and only have a paper map and their own faulty sense of direction to help them)

-casefic – I love the silly plots (and chases! All the chases!), which often combine really gruesome outcomes or real violence with slapstick. I’d be especially tickled if you wrote a plot that starts out silly and seemingly innocent (e.g., they get “hired” by a kid who lost their homework) but ends up deadly serious, or vice versa

-I also love the flashes of really dark humor, usually provided by David snarking about plot developments, though my favorite example remains the intro to S3E1, with David assuring his sick mother that they’ll sweep the Emmys, and then they lost big time and we see a title card saying that the mom died on Emmy night. What can I say but: ROFL

-Maddie and David are really pretty terrible detectives, but they always manage to solve the mystery – or a solution falls into their laps – and I’m here for it

-Blue Moon almost never seems to take on actual paying clients – what else might David and Maddie do for much-needed cash? Bodyguards, extras on a movie, professional consultants on a movie (probably a really shlocky, C-grade production being filmed in the middle of nowhere), dance marathon, talent contest…

-all the shippiness before the UST becomes RST – in canon they slow-danced in a bar, they slept side by side on a plane, he’s snuck into her house multiple times when he was in trouble, etc. etc. etc. The sky’s the limit!

-maybe they get together in a different way than in canon and/or they have a relationship that departs from canon? Or how about if they resolve the UST as they do in canon, but then find a way to be both partners and lovers, without getting so wrapped up in what they each think the other one should be that they spoil everything? Basically, could they be mature enough to have a relationship that works for them both, or be friends with benefits, or hell even break up but remain each other’s most important person (and maybe still have sex occasionally)?

-tropes – the canon plays with so many tropes, you could too! Some suggestions: there’s only one bed, undercover as lovers/married/client and bodyguard, waking up married, any variation on Lady and the Tramp you can think of (including David having to pretend he’s a class act while Maddie has to play the slob, for a case or because of a situation with their families or…), they get zapped by a mad scientist they’re surveilling and swap bodies, etc.

-road trip! Oh the possibilities...

-playing Twenty Questions or another game during a boring stakeout, and personal revelations come spilling out

-Maddie’s experience as a model proves key to cracking a case, whether you want to make the whole story a riff on the world of fashion (The Devil Wears Prada parody, anyone?) or use that as a surprise plot point

-they get tangled up (again) in international espionage and go on a globe-trotting adventure, either chasing a MacGuffin or being chased – basically, get them out of Los Angeles and their relative comfort zone, and send them Indiana Jones-ing all over the world

-the show often makes 80s-typical mean jokes about Russia and the Cold War – what if a case took Maddie and David to the Soviet Union in its last years? Give me all the culture clashes, David being obnoxious and Maddie trying to be diplomatic, all the vodka, chases down frozen streets and over the frozen Neva River, dodging the KGB, sneaking around behind the scenes at the Bolshoi or Kirov Ballet and winding up on stage…

-when they visit a “rough” dive bar in S1, there’s a whole scene of David teasing Maddie to show tough-girl attitude, and she quips that she can’t wait till he has to accompany her to a high-society event. Um, yes please!

-they attempt to date like a regular couple, and stuff keeps getting in the way – whether they go to the opera/ballet and a fancy restaurant, or a basketball game and out for beers, or they try a quiet dinner and a movie at home (or all of the above!), canon-like complications keep interrupting. But then again, the ridiculous way they work is what brought them together in the first place. Bonus points if the fish-out-of-water partner ends up getting into the other one’s date-activity of choice, while snarking all the way.

-David has been to Maddie’s house multiple times – including to sleep over, both platonically and not – and they’ve both crashed at the office, but what little we see of David’s place, it seems to be a bachelor pad/hovel with a large yet mysteriously unfurnished living room. Maddie visits David/comes to spend the night/hides out with him from villains, and shenanigans ensue.

-canon often resolves the clash between David’s opportunism, happy-go-luckiness, and cockiness, and Maddie’s gentle idealism, worrywartness, and romanticism, by having David “win.” That can be funny, but what if the plot gave Maddie the right a bit more?

-I’m honestly not that into smut for this pairing - a fade to black, something implied, something referenced, innuendo, maybe brief flashes (heh) of what the characters think about/imagine/remember work much better with the canon’s overall tone, I think.

Likes:

I love pre-canon, canon, post-canon, canon-divergent, and missing-scene stories. I love character-driven and plot-driven stories equally, and I love fics which mix humor and angst/serious business when appropriate for the canon.

I love stories about characters at work and play, group dynamics, family dynamics (including constructed families), professional partnerships, friendships, alliances, rivalries, intimate couples (new lovers/first times as well as long-term/established couples), UST-ridden couples who are not just UST-ridden but connected in other ways too, etc.

I love irony, snark, humor as well as angst arising from the characters rather than the plot crowbaring it in, linear, non-linear, and 5+1 stories, hopeful endings, happy endings, bittersweet endings, worldbuilding, spiky characters who keep their jagged edges and spikiness in adversity as well as when their lives are going well, square-peg-in-round-hole characters, characters who are their own worst enemies as well as those who can get over themselves when the occasion calls for it, characters with conflicting values which may or may not be reconciled/resolved, characters who treat each other with respect and as equals even if they hate/annoy/can’t stand/love to dislike each other.

I especially love workplace stories (this can mean anything from an actual workplace/casefic/procedural setting to anything that revolves around the canon world in which the characters live) in which the characters are competent and dedicated to the job, and while they may not be exactly friends and they may well irritate one another, they still manage to rub along to get the job done and maybe even grow to care about one another (much to their surprise and sometimes reluctance/discomfort). Or, if they can’t get along, show me why not and what’s preventing them from finding common ground.

In terms of ship dynamics, I love (where it fits the characters) banter, competitiveness or antagonism shading into attraction (this tension need not be resolved), oh-god-why-did-it-have-to-be-you-what-did-I-do-to-deserve-this, bickering yet loving couples, faithfulness, characters who are serious about their romantic interests, characters who think they are much better at flirtation than they actually are, characters forced to work together only to prove much more compatible than they initially assumed, fics which mix an exploration of characters’ professional and everyday lives with shipping. A dynamic I cannot resist is shipping a couple who are incompatible in some important way (they are ideological enemies, cop and criminal, spies from opposite sides, one betrayed the other or they betrayed each other), and while they love and want each other they’re also not willing to change sides or surrender/compromise their identity for the other’s benefit, and how they might (or not) make their relationship work anyway.

I don’t have any very specific likes for smut, other than smut fitting the characters – show me how their canon dynamics spill over into the bedroom (or other place of congress). I also like sexual scenarios that subvert expectations a little and surprise the characters themselves (e.g., the person who’s usually quiet or more passive taking charge, the more aggressive person goes with it possibly snarking or commenting on it as long as they can). And I like sexual scenarios that contain an element of competition, antagonism, oh-god-this-is-a-bad-idea-but-we’re-going-for-it-hammer-and-tongs, not wanting to admit feelings or show vulnerability except oops it happens anyway, whether the characters acknowledge it or not, or just people getting way more into it or being more affected by it than they thought they would. When it fits the characters and their canon dynamic, you also can’t go wrong with we-both-wanted-this-for-forever-and-now-we-both-know-it-so-here-we-go-diving-in-headfirst. For het and/or slash, oral, vaginal, anal incl. pegging, manual (ifyouknowwhatImean) – it’s all good. You can go as veiled or as explicit as you like, but please avoid excessive medical jargon – I don’t find a lot of mention of “penis” or “clit” sexy.

Getting In Gear With Fashion World

Do you ever wish you could get everything you need super quickly from one place to avoid multiple orders and ensure efficiency?

Well me too, and you know where I found that recently?

Fashion World! Excuse me. I know I’m pretty late to the game but boy am I glad I still turned up to play.

The amount of departments and sheer choice is immense. Fashion world is a sister company of JD Williams & Company, and it’s one of the UK’s biggest shopping companies offering a massive collection of brand name products for pretty much all ages and sizes.

We stan a company that is plus size inclusive and Fashion World is no exception. We dub thee, stanned.

Now I’ve been searching for new active wear because tis the season of reassessing my wellbeing and fitness goals. Full disclaimer this has absolutely nothing to do with weight loss or diets, so if you’re looking for me to advise you in this area I’ll have to say try somewhere else.

As someone that used to be allergic to fitness (that can be a thing right?), then ran into its open arms, then had a really gross break up (we were on a break) then found myself once again somewhat in love and back together, it’s been pretty turbulent.

Needless to say I know it’s about mind-set, balance and doing what works for me. “Health” looks different for each person and last year I learned that sometimes health isn’t even accessible for many let alone me, and that’s okay because what I’m looking to get isn’t necessarily healthy but happy and balanced.

I know that for my job and also for me, being active is so important. I love to feel mobile and ready to take on a challenge regardless of being a big girl, and so as I overhauled my goals for getting and staying active I wanted to make sure I had the right kit to do it.

So whatever your reason, if you’re planning to get active this year, and more importantly on your terms, Fashion World is a great place to get whatever you might need.

I love how many sports brands are now catering for plus sizes because the reality is exercise isn’t about any body type or any number on the scale; having the right gear can sometimes be half of the battle when you’re big and I am so glad that there were so many incredible options carried on the Fashion World website.

I needed several new items right down from trainers to sports bra, and so I headed to the Fashion World website to see what they had to get me ready for my New Year goals.

A big pull for me is that a lot of the stuff on the Fashion World website are down in price which means you actually make a big savings when ordering from them rather than directly through the brands website or other retailers.

The sports bra from Panache is so amazing! I always find it difficult to find sports bras because they’re not necessarily big, but they do need to be strapped down. The great part about this being wired means that there’s added support. It means that the girls are strapped firmly in place and not going to box me while I box. The back latte design is so gorgeous and I love that it just reinforces the fact that you can look cute while you train. Again this is cheaper than buying directly from Panache so it’s a bit sneaky but worth it if you save coin.

The rest of the items I got are all Adidas. So firstly a round of applause for Adidas and its plus range, going up to a 24/26, which is substantial seeing as there was a point where there was no plus sizing at all, but let’s hope they further expand their plus sizing.

I ordered the AOP tights (leggings), the stripe hoodie, linear slim tank and the Adidas run 70s trainers. Now if you I ordered directly from the Adidas it would have been a bit higher in price, but again you can save by ordering through Fashion World.

I am SO impressed with the amount of plus size sport and active wear ranges Fashion World carries and honestly I have no doubt that I’ll be going through them for all my active wear needs from now on.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon - Slightly Canon Divergence: Do Bong Soon x Ahn Min Hyuk

In this universe, Bong Soon doesn’t work at Ainsoft as game developer because I want to keep their cute relationship free of unprofessional boss-employee trope. And there is no crazy murder kidnapping sub-plot either. Just pure fluffy stuff.

Taking off the watch, Ahn Min Hyuk signs. He debates the idea of working out a sweat and then sleep like a log but decides to hold back until he completes the regression testing of the latest game. The last batch of added new features are going well but he wants to make sure that the established features don’t catch any bug as well.

They are only a week away from the launch of a new game and everyone is in frenzy. He made sure that the cafeteria is open 24/7 and convert two other board rooms into secured napping areas for female employees apart from the usual sleeping corner. But all the catering efforts can’t erase a harsh truth of the gaming industry: his staffs are slowly becoming walking cross-bred between panda and zombie.

So he told everyone to go home today and leave a small team who has not pulled all-nighter stay behind for emergency calls.

He also needs a break from all the office buzz.

Flipping out the cellphone, he is about to set alarm clock for 10:15pm, hoping to catch a short nap before seeing a new message from Bong Soon. His heart swelled at the flashing bright yellow icon but soon flops at the two-sentence message:

“I will stay with grandma for two more nights. I will call you when I get back.”

“Is everything alright? Should I come and pick you up?”

“I know it’s summer but keep warm, don’t sleep in your sleeve-less shirt”

“Send grandma my hello. I will come visit her next week”

Sleep tight Bong Bong!

Looking at the three fluttering heart icons, Min Hyuk lets out another sign. He misses her, really really misses her. He wants to hear her calling him Minmin, wants to see her, hug her and kiss her. But seeing how the messages are unread, she probably deserts the phone somewhere. And he doesn’t want to interrupt her quality time with grandma either. She only gets to see her a few times a year. Not to mention, grandma is sick. Bong Soon could be sick too. And he feels anxious about the possibility.

Tossing the phone on the nearby table, he goes for a shower, hoping to get rid of the murky feeling.

The regression test doesn’t go well.

At 2am, strained eyes and dampened spirit, Min Hyuk decides on a kitchen break and makes a cup of tea.

It is in times like this that makes him want to call Bong Soon just to hear her voice. But it’s too late into the night. The messages remain unread and it makes him a little lonely.

She’s only been away for three days and he feels like three months have passed.

It’s crazy to think how fast they have gone from being just two complete strangers to a couple in matter of months. No, deletes that statement, they were not completely strangers. He has known her for years. He has kept her in his heart since that Sunday morning, building her an altar and worshiping her devotedly as one would to a savior. He has looked for her traces in any girl in pink but she remains elusive. Just when he resigned to the idea that she was just a creation of his panic mind, Bong Soon stormed in and upended his life.

Sipping tea in front of the closet’s painting, Min Hyuk thinks of wonder and traces the contour of the canvas girl’s hidden face, making a mental note of calling Bong Soon first thing in the morning.

That is when his fingers brush past something plastic. It’s transparent and were put in places which are not very noticeable at the first glance. On a closer look, there are many of them dotting the painting and uncannily resemble sticky notes.

Picking one up for a better look, Min Hyuk realize it’s Bong Soon’s writing. The one he’s holding reads: “Minmin, don’t stay up too late” decorated with a cute drawing of a stick figure snoring out a string of Z letters in descendent size. That one draws a chuckle out of him.

Another draws a big bowl of steaming rice in the middle with a single line “you promise three meals a day” with a pouty face to accentuate the mood. He actually laughs out loud reading the note and feels a bit guilty all at once. He didn’t remember what he had for the last meal or when that last meal happens to be honest. The last few days were hectic and without her around, food doesn’t seem to taste anything.

One note is a reminder of him taking a break whenever the stabbing scar aches. It’s followed by a smaller line saying “I’m sorry.” His smile fades at the line but his eyes are warm. He has an overwhelming urge to drive all the way to Busan to hold and tell her that’s his decision, for his selfish wish of keeping her out of danger, his and his alone. It’s not her fault. And hope to kiss away her misplaced guilt. Oh, how he wishes to kiss her now.

There are quite a few of them sticking here and there. Some are just silly doodles. Some are tips for relaxing neck and shoulder muscle or how to make home-made eye patch. He smiles, laughs and feels warm inside. The unfinished tea has grown cold but Min Hyuk doesn’t notice.

2pm. Shit. He overslept.

Checking the phone, he saw one message from Secretary Gong assuring that they have received his notes on the regression test results and the development team are working on the issues. They will let him know asap if anything happens. It came in at 9am so work seems to be fine.

Stretching arms, he debates whether he should go to the office at this point but rationalize his choice to stay home as a testament of his amazing leadership skill. If everything can go smoothly without him, doesn’t it show how well he has trained the staff?

Messages to Bong Soon were marked as read but there is no reply. But strangely it doesn’t bother him as much. Maybe he should take this day off to visit grandma, and Bong Soon. Her transparent notes are laid neatly on his bedside table. He took picture of all of them last night and now they will be with him all day wherever he is.

Feeling excited over the idea of getting to Busan, he strolled into the kitchen to get water and almost chokes when Bong Soon chirpily greets him:

-          Good afternoon sleepy head! I’m back!

Apparently Bong Soon is unfazed by his dramatic antic of dripping off water and goes on her monologue as usual:

-          Grandma is getting better so she told me to go home. “A measly cold won’t kill me,” yeah, right, as if it’s not the reason she wasn’t able to get out of bed for three days. But Dad’s cold remedy and Bong Gi’s prescription seem to be working so she is up and around this morning. Gyeong Shim said she would come over to look after her tonight so that’s why I come back. Mom made so much side dishes, I brought some for you. I bet you haven’t eaten any since forever so should we have ‘linner’?

-          Well, hello beautiful stranger, and I believe you mean ‘dinner’? 

A shocked but very awake Min Hyuk lightly teases the cheerful woman unpacking several little containers at his kitchen table

-          Well, dear sleepy stranger, I think ‘linner’ is the correct term. Remember ‘brunch’? What time do you think it is?

-          You haven’t had lunch?

-          Yeah, dad normally eats in shop, Bong Gi is at hospital as always, and mum is off to share the dishes with the neighborhood ladies. I don’t want to eat alone and plus…

Her voice trails off and she seems to be suddenly engrossed in knowing how many containers there are. Min Hyuk is dying to know what comes after her “plus” but they can come back to this “plus” after the meal, when she is well fed, less blushed and more comfortable. They have all the time of the world.

-          Give me two minutes to wash up. Come right back.

He winks at her and skips to the bathroom.

Their ‘linner’ goes on well. Bong Soon told him about grandma and he fills her in about the regression test. They argues a bit over whether it’s time to pull out the Korean flag chopstick and Bong Soon doesn’t look convinced when he said it’s actually an interior design highlight. But he doesn’t lie when he said it’s endearing to him.

They ends up spending the afternoon lounging and absentmindedly watching tv. Head on her lap, he told her of the upcoming launch of the new game. It never fails to excite Bong Soon.

-          Next week! Yay, I can’t wait to play it!

-          And I can’t wait to not worry about it

-          Aw, sleepy head, you will be worry-free soon, but I must admit, your workaholic self is sexier than your usual carefree CEO image.

He loves how her tease mixed with relaxing smile. In his signature move of pretending to be scandalized aka. hand-over-mouth, Min Hyuk signs exaggeratedly:

-          Well, so no future break for me then. Who knows courting would be this demanding?

Bong Soon’s light kiss on his forehead feels ticklish.

-          Don’t push yourself too hard. You have a one-week-of-working-per-month reputation to uphold

He chuckles lightly and leave a perk on her hand.

-          Thanks for the notes by the way. They are awesome!

She quickly realizes what he refers to and smiles shyly.

-          Oh that, so you found them

-          Though the hiding place is quite unique

-          Isn’t her me?

-          That’s why you leave them there?

-          I’m taking care of grandma so I can’t check the phone frequently. And I know you tend to…watch her…a lot…so I left the notes there just in case I can’t reply your messages right away.

-          Thank you

-          It’s nothing…do you like it?

-          I like you

-          Come on, you know what I mean

-          I like you

-          You’re messing with me

-          I love you

The last sentence seems to make her blush more than usual. His strong woman, his love, his friend, his everything blushes when he says he loves her. Min Hyuk feels ecstatic. Her accepting silence emboldens him.

-          I love you, love the fact that you appears in my life, love that I can protect you, and love that we are together, right now and forever

-          Now you’re just cheesy

Bong Soon laughs lovingly.

-          But what’s up with the stick figure? I don’t think I’m that skinny…or maybe I am. Time to get back to the weight bench. I have to tell you, I’m not a weight-lifting kind of guy, not really my style, I’m more treadmill type of guy, elegant and smooth…but you insist…

-          I missed you, for the past three days.

-          ...

-          I miss you a lot it’s ridiculous. I miss you. I love you.

He can feel her hand in his is getting warmer. Min Hyuk doesn’t look up but he knows she is blushing. They’re both ridiculous, in love, and deliriously happy. And he doesn’t want it any other way. Putting her hand over his wildly beating heart, he mutters softly:

-          Thank you, for loving me.

How to Manage Marketing Campaigns like a Financial Currency Trader

Profit and loss statements need to be generated.

Budget status updates have been requested.

Juggling multiple marketing campaigns is stressful. But more importantly, it’s also incredibly risky.

Soon enough, you’ve depleted your budget to the last few cents, and you have nothing to show for it.

Or worse, you didn’t spot the right trends in a successful tactic before spending too much on the underperforming ones.

And now you don’t have enough money to re-allocate to top-tier mediums.

Curiously enough, adopting the same methodical mindset of a financial currency trader can help you better manage results.

Here’s how.

Start With a Currency Arbitrage Mindset

Here’s the problem with digital marketing.

It changes every day. Old stuff gives way to new stuff.

And you never really know how a campaign will perform until you try it.

That saying (1) is unhelpful and (2) requires extra money to experiment with potentially budget-draining activities.

But it’s true.

You really don’t know which playbook, game plan, or actionable tip is going to work until you experiment. The stuff that worked last year almost certainly won’t work the same this year.

Not to mention that every business is structured differently. Each caters to diverse audiences. So copying your competitors or that awesome tactic you read about is also out.

What works for Company X might bankrupt Company Z.

If there were set-in-stone tactics that produced million-dollar businesses overnight, every dude on GrowthHackers.org would be rich.

PPC might be amazing for your friend’s business. But that doesn’t mean investing in PPC is instantly going to turn you into the next Zuckerberg.

So where do people turn when they hit this realization? A/B testing.

You all know those case studies that promise a mythical pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

I did X and generated a 40000000000% increase in conversions!

Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but it’s not that far off.

Most A/B tests fail, though.

They take too long to get results. Plus that whole “bias” thing. And of course, sample size.

You need a minimum of 1,000 conversions monthly for statistical significance.

So what should you do instead?

Implement a currency arbitrage mindset.

Currency arbitrage is a strategy in which the trader takes advantage of different spreads offered by brokers for a particular currency pair by making trades.

Different spreads imply a gap between the bid and ask prices. Meaning, they can buy and sell pairs to make more money.

What does this mean in English?

Place lots of small bets on different tactics, channels, platforms, and mediums so that you can evaluate their effectiveness in real-time.

Once you see specific trends developing (either positive or negative), you double down on the winners and cut your losses on the rest.

This way, you can test multiple experiments at once without the bias and lack of statistical significance that comes with A/B testing.

You get in and out fast. And you come out on the other side with specific campaigns to focus on rather than a mixed bag.

For example, you can’t always control the end result. But you can control the inputs that eventually get you there. And you can monitor, forecast, or predict where those will fall based on just a few days’ worth of performance.

Then, you can fine tune and adjust each ‘level’ accordingly to squeeze out the best results.

Adjusting Your Budget Based on Market Movement

The first banner advertisement ever appeared on HotWired in 1994.

Is that tie-dye? Yes, yes it is.

But it gets worse:

Super subtle. Lord have mercy on us all.

But guess what?

This banner ad debuted with a click-through rate of 78%.

Yes, you read that right. Seventy. Eight. Percent.

If you told any marketer today that your banner ads are getting a 78% CTR, you’d get laughed out of the room.

Why? It’s inconceivable. It’s probably impossible in today’s world.

Today, the average display ad CTR is 0.05%.

This all brings me back to one concept coined by Andrew Chen:

The law of shitty click-throughs:

All marketing strategies over time will result in shitty click-through rates.

As more and more people use these tactics, the market becomes saturated.

Users get sick of it, and they don’t click. Or they go banner blind.

You can see trends that follow this concept with almost any marketing activity.

Remember the good old days when Facebook organic reach was insane?

You paid nothing and reached thousands or millions of eager users.

Now, organic reach is almost nothing:

As more and more marketers use the concepts put in place, it results in fewer and fewer results.

This is a perfect example of market movement and active management in currency trading.

You can’t hold certain trades forever and expect exponential performance.

Just because something is generating an insane ROI now, doesn’t mean you can ride it off into the sunset.

Markets are constantly shifting, just like marketing tactics.

What was hot one day (banner ads) isn’t now.

If you don’t adjust your strategy based on analytic research and forecasts, you risk declining performances associated with passive management.

Passive management is when you sit idly by and attempt to cruise to the finish line on your current strategy.

Active management relies on analytical performance data over time to spot trends and make informed decisions about what needs to change.

If you notice a decline in organic reach on Facebook, you probably shouldn’t be dumping your campaign dollars into it.

Unfortunately, us marketers (including me) fall into this trap more often than we’d like to admit.

You log in to Google AdWords or Analytics and see some great conversion data:

Your plans are working as you’d hoped.

But that doesn’t mean you can sit back and let the good times roll.

Sure, you can do that for a little bit. But over time, as markets, tactics, and consumers shift, you’ve gotta take an active role in managing campaigns.

Adjust based on trends.

A great way to do this is by analyzing specific topics on Google Trends:

Or even keeping up to date with the latest studies on popular marketing tactics by conducting a basic Google search:

Stay up-to-date with market movement and look at the underlying trends or patterns. Because when people are blogging about it, tweeting it, favoriting it, or liking it, it’s already too late.

Be Cautious in a Bull Market

When everything is running smoothly, it’s referred to as a bull market.

Investor confidence and financial optimism are at an all-time high.

On the surface, everything is running like a well-oiled machine.

Unemployment is low. The economy’s GDP is growing steadily. Stocks are rising.

And your marketing tactics are getting more traction.

But with all of this surface-based optimism comes serious potential side effects:

It now becomes difficult to predict potential shifts and trends or when tactics might change.

Facebook’s organic reach was booming just a few years ago. Until, of course, it didn’t.

Have you ever seen The Big Short?

If not, I highly recommend it. It’s a great movie.

Not just because it’s an incredible, intense account of the 2005 housing crisis.

Mainly because it features Steve Carell:

In all seriousness, it’s a great movie that heavily relates to digital marketing.

The main concept of the movie was based on the true story of Michael Burry, a hedge fund manager who shorted the housing crisis of 2005.

He believed there was a housing bubble, leading him to short sell and bet against the banks who thought he was a chump, taking his deals like candy.

The idea of short selling is motivated by the belief that a security’s price will decline, enabling it to be bought back at a lower price point for maximum profit.

And people thought Michael (Burry, not Prison) was insane.

Who in their right mind bets against the housing market when prices are nearly doubling year after year?

But Burry noticed a few troubling trends. He saw that subprime home loans were in danger of defaulting. And many adjustable rate mortgages with balloon payments were all adjusting around the same time.

He decided to throw more than one billion dollars into credit default swaps.

It’s safe to say that the banks weren’t too happy in the end.

Here’s the moral of the story:

Very few people believed him. But Burry discovered the mystical unicorn that most marketers strive to find.

The main point as it relates to marketing campaigns is this:

You need to find your own big short.

Your own diamond in the rough that you can tap into before anyone else.

Your own display ad invention that generates a 78% CTR.

Finding the tactic that brings your conversions up by 10x.

Sounds wonderful. But you know it’s not easy. Because it hasn’t been blogged about or shared at conferences just yet.

But examples of it do already exist in the marketing world today.

For example, Brian Dean of Backlinko raised the link-building bar with his skyscraper technique.

He took a spin on a classic link-building tactic that increased his search traffic by 110% in just two weeks.

On top of a massive increase in traffic, he generated countless backlinks from thousands of different referring domains:

So where do people turn when they hit this realization? A/B testing.

You all know those case studies that promise a mythical pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

I did X and generated a 40000000000% increase in conversions!

Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but it’s not that far off.

Most A/B tests fail, though.

They take too long to get results. Plus that whole “bias” thing. And of course, sample size.

You need a minimum of 1,000 conversions monthly for statistical significance.

So what should you do instead?

Implement a currency arbitrage mindset.

Currency arbitrage is a strategy in which the trader takes advantage of different spreads offered by brokers for a particular currency pair by making trades.

Different spreads imply a gap between the bid and ask prices. Meaning, they can buy and sell pairs to make more money.

What does this mean in English?

Place lots of small bets on different tactics, channels, platforms, and mediums so that you can evaluate their effectiveness in real-time.

Once you see specific trends developing (either positive or negative), you double down on the winners and cut your losses on the rest.

This way, you can test multiple experiments at once without the bias and lack of statistical significance that comes with A/B testing.

You get in and out fast. And you come out on the other side with specific campaigns to focus on rather than a mixed bag.

For example, you can’t always control the end result. But you can control the inputs that eventually get you there. And you can monitor, forecast, or predict where those will fall based on just a few days’ worth of performance.

Then, you can fine tune and adjust each ‘level’ accordingly to squeeze out the best results.

Yes, you read that right. Seventy. Eight. Percent.

If you told any marketer today that your banner ads are getting a 78% CTR, you’d get laughed out of the room.

Why? It’s inconceivable. It’s probably impossible in today’s world.

This all brings me back to one concept coined by Andrew Chen:

All marketing strategies over time will result in shitty click-through rates.

As more and more people use these tactics, the market becomes saturated.

Users get sick of it, and they don’t click. Or they go banner blind.

You can see trends that follow this concept with almost any marketing activity.

You paid nothing and reached thousands or millions of eager users.

As more and more marketers use the concepts put in place, it results in fewer and fewer results.

This is a perfect example of market movement and active management in currency trading.

You can’t hold certain trades forever and expect exponential performance.

Just because something is generating an insane ROI now, doesn’t mean you can ride it off into the sunset.

Markets are constantly shifting, just like marketing tactics.

What was hot one day (banner ads) isn’t now.

If you don’t adjust your strategy based on analytic research and forecasts, you risk declining performances associated with passive management.

Passive management is when you sit idly by and attempt to cruise to the finish line on your current strategy.

Active management relies on analytical performance data over time to spot trends and make informed decisions about what needs to change.

If you notice a decline in organic reach on Facebook, you probably shouldn’t be dumping your campaign dollars into it.

Unfortunately, us marketers (including me) fall into this trap more often than we’d like to admit.

You log in to Google AdWords or Analytics and see some great conversion data:

Your plans are working as you’d hoped.

But that doesn’t mean you can sit back and let the good times roll.

Sure, you can do that for a little bit. But over time, as markets, tactics, and consumers shift, you’ve gotta take an active role in managing campaigns.

Stay up-to-date with market movement and look at the underlying trends or patterns. Because when people are blogging about it, tweeting it, favoriting it, or liking it, it’s already too late.

When everything is running smoothly, it’s referred to as a bull market.

Investor confidence and financial optimism are at an all-time high.

On the surface, everything is running like a well-oiled machine.

Unemployment is low. The economy’s GDP is growing steadily. Stocks are rising.

And your marketing tactics are getting more traction.

But with all of this surface-based optimism comes serious potential side effects:

It now becomes difficult to predict potential shifts and trends or when tactics might change.

The idea of short selling is motivated by the belief that a security’s price will decline, enabling it to be bought back at a lower price point for maximum profit.

And people thought Michael (Burry, not Prison) was insane.

Who in their right mind bets against the housing market when prices are nearly doubling year after year?

But Burry noticed a few troubling trends. He saw that subprime home loans were in danger of defaulting. And many adjustable rate mortgages with balloon payments were all adjusting around the same time.

He decided to throw more than one billion dollars into credit default swaps.

It’s safe to say that the banks weren’t too happy in the end.

Here’s the moral of the story:

Disneyland Tips from an Annual Passholder

If you’ve been here long, you know we are ALL Disney obsessed. As soon as my husband started looking at prospective jobs in Los Angeles four years ago, I was excited for quite a few reasons, but mostly because I could possibly be living SO CLOSE to Disneyland. Fast forward four years, and here we are. You’d think my craving for all things Disney would have been satisfied with how often we go, but really, my love for it just grows with every visit! Haha 🙂 I get asked a lot what my best tips are for doing Disneyland and what I’d recommend, so here are all the delicious details in one post for fellow Disney lovers like me.

1. The first thing to remember is that you won’t get everything on your list! We were at Disneyland more than 30 days last year (that’s an entire month!) and we still didn’t experience everything that they have to offer in the parks. Before you go, decide what’s most important to you and to your group and focus on a few main things that you don’t want to miss.

2. You only need one app – the Disneyland official app. Through that app, you can make dining reservations, see where character meet-and-greets are in the park, check wait times, and see all the entertainment scheduled throughout the park that day. You can also access any photo pass photos that are taken throughout your trip, and use the Max Pass (more info on that in a minute!) through the Disneyland app. We’ve found it’s the most up-to-date when it comes to ride closures, wait times, and for entertainment schedules compared to other apps. You can also see information on each ride – like height requirements, thematic elements, and what age group the ride is best suited for.

3. It’s OK to bring young kids. In fact, I’d recommend it! Disney is so much more magical when experienced with little ones! The parks are incredibly kid-friendly, and even BABY-friendly. There are nurseries/baby changing stations in both parks that make it easy to take care of little ones. They even offer plenty of chairs for breastfeeding, entertainment for little ones that need a break, high chairs, a whole room dedicated to changing tables, and they even have a tiny toilet that you can use when you’re potty training toddlers (seriously, they think of it all). The care center in Disneyland is located right off Main Street by the First Aid center, and the one in California Adventure is located right by the Ghiradelli store. They also offer a ride-switch pass to parents, so if you’re there without additional adults to watch kids while you go on “big kid” rides. Just ask the cast member at the entrance to the ride for a rider-switch pass before you get in line. To those who questions whether or not it’s worth it to bring young kids who won’t remember anything, I say: THEY may not remember it, but I most certainly will. I mean, just look at that FACE!

4. Consider the time of year you’re going before you book your trip. The busiest times of the year are in the summer (June through August) and/or surrounding holiday weekends. If you’re looking for less crowds, try going in January through March or in September and October. If you want to experience the  EXTRA Disney magic during the holidays, always go sooner rather than later! (I.e. if you want to go for Halloween go at the beginning of the month when it’s first decorated or if you want to go for Christmas, go the last week of November or the first week of December before it gets too crazy). If you like to avoid crowds definitely skip the week leading up to Christmas and the week following Christmas. Usually the park is SO PACKED for those two weeks that the parks reach capacity around 11 AM. The weekdays in the parks are always less crowded, too. Saturday and Sunday are almost always more crowded.

5. Speaking of TIMING – when you are at the parks, it’s best to get there early, especially if you have little ones who want to ride all the rides in fantasyland and not wait 50 minutes (those rides don’t have Fast Pass or Max Pass options). The earlier you get there, the less crowded it will be. I’d recommend getting there as soon as the park opens (or even get in line BEFORE the park opens). If you’re staying at the Disney park hotels or get a 3-day park hopper with a magic hour, BE SURE TO USE IT! You can literally get on all the rides you want to ride before the park even opens to the rest of the general public. Then you can just enjoy the rest of your day soaking in all the magic and taking things slow (which is so nice when you have little ones!).

6. Take advantage of the Fast Pass feature! And in my personal opinion, GET THE MAX PASS! Fast pass is free, but Max Pass is $10, per person, per day (and it is 100% worth it). With Fast Passes, they are a physical ticket you have walk over to the ride to pick up and keep with you until it’s time to ride. While they are great and can get you on the ride in a short amount of time, you still have to take the time to walk to the ride to pick up the fast pass. When you use the Max Pass feature, it’s all ELECTRONIC! You can book a Max Pass through your mobile device from anywhere inside the parks without having to walk to each individual ride to pick it up. When you have young kids with tired feet, it’s well worth the investment (even if it’s just for one day).

7. Speaking of mobile devices, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be using the Disney app to check times, book max passes, and using your phone to take about 300 photos every time you’re there, so I would recommend getting a portable charger. THIS ONE is my favorite and can fully re-charge your phone 4-5 times. Worth every penny.

8. One of the best things about Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure are the SHOWS! Whether it’s fireworks, Fantasmic, Parades, light shows, or a sit-down show in a theatre, you really can’t go wrong. If you would rather not wait as long saving spots, several restaurants throughout the parks offer preferred dining packages with reserved seating areas (also worth the money with young kids, in my opinion). World of Color (which is my FAVORITE) also has Fast Passes available for reserved seating – get there early in the morning for better seating! The matterhorn macaroon is also a fun, tasty treat.  Carnation Cafe: Good meatloaf, DELICIOUS fried pickles. Plaza Inn: I hear they have delicious breakfasts, but their FRIED CHICKEN is our favorite. Cafe Orleans: Get reservations, then order the Monte Cristo, Pommes Frites, and Beignets and thank me later. If you’re a fan of gumbo, I’d recommend that, too. Blue Bayou: Nothing beats that atmosphere, but the Gruyere Mac ‘n Cheese comes a close second. Their gumbo is hard to beat, too. (You’ll definitely need reservations here – you can book up to 60 days in advance). Bengal Barbecue: The safari skewers are actually pretty tasty and actually low-cal Red Rose Taverne: The grey stuff really is delicious! Also, POUTINE. Ghiradelli: We love their Ocean Beach Sea Salt Caramel Sundae, Nob Hill Chill (my husband’s fave) and the Sea Salt Caramel Quake Shake. Plus, you get a piece of chocolate just for walking through the door! The Cove Bar: Get the lobster nachos – or if you don’t like seafood, ask them to substitute tri-tip for the lobster. SO, so good. Their cotton candy lemonade is also a fun drink. (This will be renamed the lamplight lounge after Pixar Pier opens, but rumor has it some of the most beloved menu items will be staying put!) Flo’s V8 Cafe: Their breakfast is delicious, and they have sides for $2.99 that are the exact same size as a kid’s portion, so we get the kids sides for dinner every other time we’re at the parks! Cozy Cones: Their churros with dipping sauce, Red’s Apple Freeze, and the Bacon Mac ‘n Cheese bread cone are all delicious! Pacific Wharf Cafe: I’m not sure there is anything better on a cold day than a warm, sourdough bread bowl full of clam chowder. Schmoozies: My favorite place for ice cold fruity drinks on hot days at the parks, but they also have AMAZING donuts and cronuts (if you can get to them before they sell out!). Studio Catering Co: If you couldn’t get into the Cove Bar (they don’t take reservations!), you’ll want to try the “Obviously Nachos.” They are a close second to the Lobster Nachos. Corn Dog Castle: I’m not a huge corn dog fan, but even I will eat these corn dogs! Turkey Legs: Okay, so these aren’t my favorite thing (they’re a little greasy for my taste), but I feel like they are a right of passage in the Disney realm. You have to try it at least once!
