The Hair in Agatha’s Locket
Tumblr media
I’ve been reading a lot of interesting tweets and theories regarding the hair in Agatha’s locket, and I personally thought it’s been fairly obvious since episode one whose hair it is.
Music tends to play a subtle but important role in media to represent different themes. One of my favorite parts of watching movies and television shows is picking up on the intentional selections by composers/music supervisors.
So how is that coming into play here?

In episode one we see Agatha, as Agnes, enter what her mind has envisioned to be the bedroom of her son, Nicholas. Here is the first time we hear this particular theme play: Nicky
Now we know that episode one, Agnes of Westview, was heavily inspired by Mare of Easttown. A show where the main character struggles to cope with the loss of her son.
This theme is also different than a lot of other parts of the score. The melody having a childlike innocence to it. But there’s also something else: heartbreak. Pain. Grief.

In episode two, we hear a variation of the theme. This time when Agatha is out of the spell and looking at the locket.
I find variations to be just as interesting as the actual theme itself. In the simplest of terms, a variation is when a theme or formal technique is repeated, only in a different form. Composers tend to use this to highlight contrast throughout the piece, but also to invoke interest in the audience. Or, more importantly, to highlight a shift/change in the mood that they want to convey to whoever is listening.
So what is the composer trying to show the audience?
Throughout Agatha All Along, we’ve seen more parts of Agatha revealed, through her intimate relationship with Rio to the care she shows for Billy.
Underneath all of that though, it’s apparent that there is something very, very broken within her. Something that has been haunting her.
Nicholas.
I could be wrong, but all signs have pointed to it being Nicky’s hair since episode one.
