Casino Blues
02.2. All or Nothing
Rusty Ryan x Male Reader | Platonic! Danny Ocean x Brother Reader
Fandom -> Ocean's Trilogy
Masterlist | Previous / Next |
Tumblr media
Linus thought, that the Royal Casablanca—the Casino of all Casinos—looked rather ordinary. Like a normal tourist vacation ship and nothing at all spectacular.
Though when they had stepped inside, Linus was astonished surprised—because the inside, the furnished set up, was so extraordinary and smelling—literally—like royalty.
Placing your sunglasses on top of your head, you gave the young lady at the receptions a warm smile of greeting.
»Good evening, Names DeVill—[Name] DeVill—and I would like to get a Chip for the Gloria Round. Start capital is five hundred million, plus the nine thousand insurance fee for my three staff members.« you said, gesturing to Linus and the Malloy Twins.
The way you said it, implies that you had been in Royal Bianca before. Otherwise, Linus couldn't understand how you could perform your acting so well.
»You had been here before or?« asked Linus you, when you had stepped through the double doors and into the lounge of Gambling Paradise.
»Mhm, yeah, when I was ten and then around age sixteen.« you replied, shushing Linus—who was about to ask another question—with a hold up of your fingers.
If the Gloria Round, a special Poker table—where there are only the Card games of the Madness Category being played—is only reserved for the grand players of the richest, then how come you're able to get one?
There was also the question, how you said "DeVill" as your surname—it does rings a bell in mind though—when it should be Ryan.
~~~
Linus, who stood next you—acting as your assistant—and watching you play, was getting just a tiny bit overwhelmed—anxiously even—with the way, how you played.
Now he could understand why Rusty had said, to never play against you. You really are merciless—mad—even.
It's the way how you sat there, so causal—leg swung over another—but also posture straight, implies a seriousness of professionalism.
But what really causes a disturbance towards the other players—bringing them out of their own concept and comfort, their confidence slowly breaking apart like biscuits being dunked into tea—was your ability of mimic.
You didn't really had a pokerface, it's more a type of jester—cheshire cat—one, with how you would glance at them, face stoic like stone—sometimes raising an eyebrow or moving your head in a certain direction of angle—and then you would break out into a smile, whenever you had a winning pair or bluffing them into a belief.
You had won every game so far and those games—be it; Devil's House, Texas Holden (the old original version), Jester Day or Crowns Deal—had been played in the last past hours at least more than thrice.
The nickname; Devil's Gambler was a true fit for you.
»My, my, Ladies and Gentlemans, where do you think you're going?« you begun, when the first player started to get up, after you had won yet again a round of Texas Holden—proudly proclaiming a Yeehaw.
»Through this whole evening, how many hours? Ten hours we've played all the card game at least over three times, except for Royal Flush and I believe it's the perfect game to end such glorious night, isn't it? Or do tell me, it seems that you're all—how do they say?—aah, yes, scared. The Royals of royals from the highsociety of richness, cannot be mere mortals and be scared from a single play of Royal Flush, now can they?«
Now you started to taunt them and it worked. They sat down on their chairs again.
„Linus. End the Game and get [Name] out of there.“
Linus didn't registered Rusty's voice, too engrossed with what you're about to do next.
»Exactly. That's what I thought. Now, I would say for this last round to make it into a majestic night, to make it truly a memorable highlight, we'll go; All or Nothing.«
„Fuck.“
All or Nothing meant, you betting the whole money—the sums you've won so far and what's still left in the Start Capital—you have.
And Royal Flush is not one of those simple card games, like Texas Holden—even though it belongs in the category of Madness Games—which could be, with good practice and some luck, won—no, this Card Game was the toughest and roughest of all of them.
Royal Flush is a game, which can turn you into a sobbing mess of self-doubt if you realise you're about to lose.
~~~
When you had started laughing, during the final set of Royal Flush, it had spooked Linus so much that he flinched visibly—thought for real, you were either about to lose or simply had lost it now—and then he remembered what Rusty had told him; make sure [Name], under no circumstances, drinks any kind of alcoholic beverage.
When Linus asked why, all he got was; Medications.
You're sober though—Cola the only drink you had all night long—and that's brought Linus minimal pressure of anxious he felt at the beginning back—because there was no reason for you to laugh so carefree during such a serious moment.
Why, thought Linus—swallowing hard, when you laughter got uncontrollably now, till you're just a wheezing mess at the table—are you like this?
»Game, set and match. Royal Flush.« you said, bringing your cards down onto the table and looking the last remaining player directly into the eyes. Grinning wicked wide.
„Games over, Linus. Get [Name] out of there, before he starts another game.“ „Linus. We meant it. Get out.“
»A pleasure it was to had you, prince of Monaco, as my opponent and bringing you to tonight devastating loss.«
Linus wanted to sob now. There's an actual prince and you beat his royal ass in a mere card game.
»So's mine. The son of Delpho DeVill surely care for another round, doesn't he?«
»Your highness, I apologise, but my Boss needs to attend another meeting now. Perhaps next time and nice to meet you.«
Linus pulled you up from the chair and out of the room, Virgil and Tuck following right away—from another room—with a luggage carrier full of bags, which are filled with way much money than Danny had said to win.
Rusty had to catch you, when—once being outside of the Ship and on the docks—you came running into his arms and prepped kisses all over his face.
It was clear, when you had started to dance with Rusty around—singing off key one of the songs you had at your wedding—and also accepting Rusty's marriage proposal, which hadn't even asked—as you two are already married—that one or more of your Colas had been spiked with something. You wouldn't have acted like this otherwise.
If you only had wanted to play more rounds and going to the auctions, then Danny or Rusty could've said; it's the Gamblers high which runs through your veins like ecstasy—but that wasn't the case.
»Linus, I know you probably have lots of questions and perhaps your confused, but later. Eventually.«
~~~
Besides what Rusty, in a moment of annoyance, had said to you—he had a few ideas how to make it up to you—didn't regret it, when he, as promised long ago, could finally pay you free.
So laying next to you in bed and having you cuddle up in his arms, was a heavenly bliss—Rusty wouldn't exchange for anything.
The Best Biscuits for Coffee
Tumblr media
We all know that there's nothing quite like dunking a biscuit in a lovely cuppa. Of tea, that is. But what about the coffee lovers amongst us; surely we deserve a piece of that action too? There are two sides to enjoying coffee and biscuits, and they don't always go together. On the one hand, there's flavour. It's gotta taste good, right? A well-earned coffee break is not something we take lightly. But then there's dunking. How much do we need to dip that biscuit...
What Biscuit Goes Well With Coffee?
Coffee is an entirely different animal from tea, and what (as they say) is good for the goose is not always entirely good for the gander. Coffee pairings are not always easy, but one thing is for certain. You need a biscuit with a bit of character. Something that will stand up, look coffee straight in the eye and announce 'Here I am'. The Rich and Chocolatey Coffee likes chocolate. And chocolate likes coffee. There's just something there that cannot be denied. Dark chocolate is bold, and the two bring out the best in one another. The creamy sweetness of milk chocolate tames the wild intensity of coffee into something more comforting. Something mocha-esque. A chocolate-coated biscuit is most definitely not made for dunking. But that does not mean it can't be the perfect partner for a cup of coffee. On the other hand, the classic chocolate chip cookie offers the perfect balance of chocolatey flavour with a slightly gooey texture that soaks up coffee like a sponge. The Buttery and Flaky Oh, the joy of a buttery biscuit! It's like a hug for your taste buds, and when submerged into a warm Arabica blend, it soaks up all that robust coffee goodness. The classic shortbread biscuit, with its crumbly texture and rich flavour, is the partner your coffee has been pining for. The Rough and Ready Sometimes you want something just a little more robust. A rugged dunker full of flavour like a classic Anzac bikkie. The Spicy and Aromatic Spice up your coffee routine with something that packs a punch, like these ginger and date biscuits. Dip them into a latte, and the creaminess of the milk perfectly complements the zesty ginger bite. Sweet and Creamy Cream-filled biscuits sit somewhere in the middle. They also completely divide the crowd. Whilst they will stand up well to a decent dunking, would you really want to?
What Biscuits do you Dunk in Coffee?
Debatably, there's an art to dunking. It's all about the timing—the quick, strategic plunge into the coffee, allowing the biscuit to soak up just enough liquid while retaining its integrity. Nobody wants a biscuit graveyard at the bottom of their cup. As any tea lover will tell you, just because a biscuit tastes really really good, this doesn't necessarily make it dunkable. There is an art to successful dunking and, let's face it, when you take taste out of the equation tea and coffee pretty much boil down to the same thing. So, let's explore the art of biscuit dunking. Timing Just like a perfect handshake, there's the right amount of time for a dunk. Too short, and you miss out on the coffee infusion; too long, and you're fishing for biscuit remnants at the bottom of your cup. Choose your weapon Not all biscuits are built for dunking. Go for something sturdy that won't crumble at first contact with your brew. Texture A slight softening from the coffee can elevate the texture to a whole new level of deliciousness. Flavour pairing Think about the coffee's undertones—nutty, fruity, chocolatey? Pick a biscuit that complements or contrasts these flavours. Nail your technique Dunk at an angle for even saturation and to prevent half the biscuit from soaking too much while the other half remains dry as the Sahara. Make it your own Because rules are made to be broken. Happen to like the biscuity sludge at the bottom of the cup? Go for it. Like the way a chocolate biscuit melts like a mocha? Have at it. Remember, the most important rule in the art of dunking is to have fun and enjoy your coffee just the way you like it—biscuit and all! Whether you are a coffee purist or a cookie monster, there's a great big world of biscuits waiting to be explored. Your ideal coffee companion is out there. To all the café owners listening in, knowing your customers' preferred coffee-biscuit pairings can turn a good morning routine into a great one. Maybe it’s time to jazz up that display case next to the cash register! Explore our range of handmade Australian biscuits and find your perfect pair. Read the full article
Market Position
McVitie's, a 180-year-old brand, has launched a £7.8 million master brand campaign to reinforce its position amid increasing competition. The brand's 'True Originals' platform, introduced in April 2023, has succeeded, resulting in a 4.5% penetration increase and a 22% sales growth.  It also doubled sales growth for the brand from 11% to 22% between April and September 2023.
“We already have a strong place in consumers’ hearts and minds in the UK, but you cannot afford as a brand not to continue to invest in that over time,” McVitie’s marketing director James King tells Marketing Week.
Walkers, a 125-year-old Company has been benefitting from a rise in sales in domestic and overseas markets. True to this, sales in the UK rose by 23% reaching £77m and export revenues grew by nearly 10% to £87.6m in 2022. Walker’s exports its packaged British biscuits to approximately 100 countries worldwide.
Walker’s Shortbread has announced plans to create a vegan version of the iconic Scottish biscuit. “Vegan is very much something we’re looking at right now,” Nicky Walker, managing director of the company told the Telegraph. “We like our product to be globally accepted, whether that means kosher, organic, gluten-free… we want to have our product enjoyed by as many different factions as possible.”
Texture and Flavour
Arguably the UK's favorite biscuit, the McVities Digestive, is famed for its sweet, wheaty taste, crumbly texture, and renowned suitability for dunking. On the other hand, are Walker's Shortbread crunchy cookies. They have a unique bite – a crunchy yet crumbly texture with a pure butter taste.
Sustainability
Walker's Shortbread is baked with no genetically modified ingredients, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or hydrogenated fats. The Company is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, for sourcing palm oil from sustainable forests. All of the Palm Oil Walker's use is certified sustainable.
McVities has introduced environmentally friendly packaging for its products. The Christmas packaging for McVitie's biscuits, for example, is designed to be the "most sustainable box ever." This features a reduction of plastic use and a commitment to diverting plastic from landfills annually.
Popularity Rate
Walkers Biscuits boasts an impressive 85% popularity rate, surpassing McVities' 77%. Walker's Shortbread, a Scottish bakery, reported a remarkable 16% sales surge in 2023, attributed to a robust festive season in the UK and increased US exports, leading to a 10% growth in export revenues to £87.6m.
In contrast, McVitie's Digestives remains a UK favorite, with 80 million packs sold annually. Their recent campaign resulted in a 4.5% increase in penetration and a doubling of sales growth to 22%.
Customers appreciate McVitie's for its crumbly texture, semi-sweet flavor, and health-conscious options like high-fiber Digestive biscuits. Walker's Shortbread, known for its rich, buttery taste and commitment to quality ingredients, continues to earn praise as "The World's Finest Shortbread.”
Conclusion
Choosing between McVities and Walker’s is subjective and depends on your personal taste preferences. McVitie's offers a wide range of biscuits catering to diverse tastes, while Walkers specializes in the art of shortbread, providing a luxurious and buttery experience. Whether you're a fan of the comforting crumble of a McVitie's Digestive or the sophisticated crunch of a Walker Shortbread, both brands offer a delightful journey into the world of British biscuits and cookies.
Fluffember Prompts
A collection of  prompts from @gumnut-logic Fluffember challenge. (Now posted in my Pick & Mix collection with previously shared Fluffember stories)
*** ***
The Beast. Day 8: Encounter.
It was dark. Only a few rays of sunlight managing to penetrate the lair he had entered. He had been warned on numerous occasions about the beast that inhabited this area and was known to attack when woken, but he had not believed. Yes, he had seen it on many occasions, but all of those times it had been funny, friendly and caring. Surely, just because it was woken early it wouldn't attack. Especially since it was him.
He creeped closer. Currently it was lying on its stomach, eyes were tightly shut, and bizarre noises were emitting from it. Finally, reaching his destination he leant towards it, his hand reaching out, but then a sudden snort from the thing in front of him was released causing him to jump back. Maybe it wasn't best to disturb it? Maybe Gordon was right, and the beast did attack if provoked this early? Although his brother was known to make things up. This probably was just one of his jokes and the usual encounter would be received. He had to be brave and find out the truth. Straightening himself up, he stepped forwards, and placed his hand confidently on the shoulder in front of him…
"Virg…"
No movement, no signs of him waking, so he tried again…
"Virgie?"
This time a groan emitted from his brother, then once again he grew quiet…
"Virgie," he pushed harder on his shoulder, "please wake up."
A yawn, and a pair of bleary eyes opened, grumpy and nothing like the kind-hearted peaceful ones he was used to… He moved backwards… Maybe this was a mistake… But then there eyes met, and a soft gentle smile illuminated the features of his brother.
"Hey Alligator, what's up?"
"Nothing," Alan replied with a little snigger at the nickname.
Virgil regarded the three-year-old in front of him. "Nothing, really?"
"Well, Gordy said you were a beast in the morning, but I didn't believe him, so he said I should come and see for myself."
"Did he indeed?"
Alan nodded his head.
"Well, I'm not a beast."
"Knew it!" Alan cheered happily.
"But," Virgil looked at his clock, "when I am woken this early, I am known to turn into a bear."
Alan gasped in shock.
"And you know what bears do, right?"
Alan scrunched up his little nose and shuck his head…
"Well, they are known to attack."
"Really?"
"Yes, with…" Virgil paused for dramatic effect… "tickles!"
A fit of giggles erupted from Alan when Virgil pounced, flung him over his shoulder, then onto the bed where he began tickling him madly.
*** ***
Favourite Drinks. Day 9: Hot Beverage.
We all know Virgil likes a… Okay, scratch the likes and replace it with needs… That boy needs a cup of coffee to function. In fact, his need for the beverage runs so deep that there is a coffee machine on Two. As soon as he's in flight and the autopilot as been selected a quick press of a button will dispense, just underneath the control panel, a deliciously rich warm coffee with one sugar and no milk or cream. Just the way he likes it. The machine is actually a new addition. A birthday present from Brains. Oh, and yes, the rumours were true, Virgil did cry with happiness when he was gifted it. So, yes, our artistic guy is a coffee addict, but what about the others? Have you ever wondered what their favourite hot drinks are…
Alan. Well, his favourite will always be hot chocolate made with milk and topped with marshmallows and cream. The best hot chocolates though are made by John, who also claims this drink as his favourite. When on the homestead he will whip up Alan's and then make his own with water, no milk. Then they will sit, just the two of them, beneath the stars they love.
When Penelope is nearby Gordon will claim that his favourite beverage is an English breakfast tea with a drop of milk, and yes, while a nice cup of tea is enjoyed, it actually takes his second spot. His first choice, well, that will always be hot water with honey and lemon. The taste, soothing. The smell reminding him of his childhood and time spent with just him and his mom after he had completed an early morning swim. Also he likes to think of himself as a no-frills kind of guy… Yes, I know, hard to imagine!
Scott, like Virgil is a coffee addict. Okay, not as bad as Virgil, but he does like a drink to help spur him on after a long morning run. However, unlike his brother he prefers his beverage Irish. Coffee with a shot or two of whisky. It was actually his father who introduced him to the mix after his first difficult rescue. He put a drop in some of his and Scott's mugs and they sat together talking through their troubles. Now, while sipping on the warming liquid, Scott will drift into a daydream, one filled with him and his father, finally reunited after eight years apart.
And the rest…
Well, Lady Penelope's choice is certainly no mystery. She is a Tea connoisseur, with numerous flavours tested throughout the years. Everything from English Breakfast, green tea, berry infusion or a simple chamomile to a chocolate mint, and even a candy floss blend. Which she personally found a bit sickly. Her favourite, Earl Grey which will always be consumed at eleven am.
Parker, just like the lady of the manor loves a good old fashioned 'cuppa' tea, with full fat milk, two sugars and don't forget the digestive biscuits for dunking.
Brains, doesn't have a favourite, and will drink anything you put in front of him… Which should be done often because he'll just get wrapped up in his work and forget to hydrate.
Kayo does not do hot drinks, of any kind, and will always turn to a homemade fruit smoothie.
Grandma. She's a perfect mix of four of her boys, and loves nothing more than a freshly made mocha, with chocolate sprinkles of course…
*** ***
The Secret Talent. Day 12: Food.
One of the boys has a talent that his family don't know about. Well, actually, Kayo knows because it is impossible to keep anything from her, but she has always kept the secret for him, even if she doesn't quite understand why he keeps it hush. There is also a strong possibility that John knows too, he has never actually brought it up, but the guy knows all and sees all. The rest of the family though, they don't, and Gordon the one who possesses this particular skill would prefer to keep it that way. Not that there is a reason in keeping it a closely guarded secret. Yes, he would probably receive some gentle teasing at first but once his brothers clicked on to the benefits of his talent and that they had actually been happily enjoying the results of his gift for many years then they would definitely let it go. Yet, he still would like to keep it from them. Prefers it that way because although he shares the final results, the preparation part, well that is just for him…
So, you are probably wondering what this mystery ability is?
Gordon can bake. Cakes to be precise. From cheesecakes and blueberry muffins to double chocolate fudge cakes or a good old-fashioned Victoria sponge. Big proper sized ones, tiny minute ones, fantastically intricately decorated ones and even tiny bitty cupcakes with triple frosting. You name it, he will bake it, he will even add intricate decorations on top. Oh, and if you are wondering, yes he has even made ones in the shape of their individual birds before.
His favourite time to bake will be when he is alone. Everyone else might be out on a mission and he isn't, or they are off island for some other reason. That will be the moment, his time, to grab an apron, put on some music and get all the ingredients he needs. Then when prepared, he will whip up some cakes ready for when his weary family return. Other times will be usually really early in the morning. He will wake about two hours before Scott, whip up some cakes then stick them in the oven. By time they are coming out Scott will be getting up, but he heads straight for a morning run, and never catches the clean-up and decorating process. He will then stow them away for later in the day.
The taste… Well, they certainly do not taste like anything their grandma would make. In fact, anyone who has been lucky enough to try one as always remarked on the exquisite taste and then will ask where they were purchased from. Gordon will come up with some wacky cake shop name to cover his tracks and no one, not even his brothers, will think to go and look for this place because he will tell them that he enjoys picking them up. So they let him, because if he isn't pulling some sort of practical joke then that is a good thing, and when it comes to food they know he won't jokingly tamper since decent food is a precious rarity in the Tracy household. There is also a secondary reason Gordon would never add a silly ingredient to his cakes, and it's the exact same reason he would never dream of messing with Virgil's piano or one of his paintings, because baking is an art form, a way for him to express his inner self.
Tea and Biscuits
Pairing: Tom x Reader
Rating: Friendly Fluff
Disclaimer: I do not own Tom in any way, shape or form. This is purely for entertainment purposes. I write for fun and make no money off of this, whatsoever.
Warnings: None
Summary: What better way to cheer you up than a cup of tea with your best friend. (No biscuits were harmed in the writing of this story!)
—————
"Hey, Tom?" Her nimble fingers toyed with the fray on her throw, nerves shaking her voice. The phone gripped tight in her other hand, holding it to her ear.
"Yes, y/n?" He played with the hemline of his shirt, staring blindly at the wall opposite him. He paused, waiting for her response.
"Can...can you come over?" She finally uttered.
Lately, she had been feeling a little down. There was no particular explanation for it, only that her motivation to function on a daily basis was getting harder to summon. It was particularly on days such as those that she craved him the most. He was the greatest cure for a rainy day. His smile alone could make her forget that she was feeling low. On top of that he would always find ways to make her laugh. Little did he know his little quirks and foolery did it anyway.
She held her breath and waited for his reply. Come on, please.
Out of habit he looked to the watch hugging his wrist and looked at the time. He wasn't sure why as he had nothing planned and for his friends time was not an issue. Work had gotten the best of him and forced him in to checking the time every five minutes or so, just to make sure that he wasn't running late. He shook his head and moved his wrist out view as if to scorn the watch face for showing itself.
"Of course, are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Her reply came a little too sudden for his liking. Instead he heard, 'I'm not fine'.
He reassured her that he wouldn't be long and hung up the phone. He rushed about his home to make sure firstly, that he looked presentable and smelt good, and also to be sure that his home was shut and safely secured.
Taking one final glance in the mirror he nodded with satisfaction and grabbed his keys, leaving for y/n’s.
****
She was pulled abruptly out of her trance by a knock on the door. Chucking the throw aside she made her way to answer it. Peeking through the spy-hole she made sure that it was Tom and not some random salesman trying to sell her his, or her, wares.
Opening the front door she barely had time to register him before feeling his arms wrap tightly around her, capturing her in an embrace. He pulled her close and held her still, for a moment, until he felt her give in.
She stood, wrapped up in his arms, enjoying the warmth of his body and the intoxicating smell of his cologne mixed with the scent of fresh washing. She closed her eyes and allowed her senses to drown in him. Almost instantly she felt that little bit better.
He rubbed her back, soothing and gentle, kissing the top of her head before gently pulling back. His eyes sought hers, capturing her gentle hues with blue. He then offered her a sweet smile and asked her once again if she was okay.
"Yeah, just feeling a bit down and lonely." She nodded, her gaze casting downwards, ashamed.
"Well, I am glad you called me over then." He noted her shame and shook his head. She was a fool for being ashamed of her emotions, scared to let them show. He gave her another hug, brief compared to his welcoming hug, but enough to shake her out of her shame.
"Shall we go and get comfy, then we can just talk?" Tom made the suggestion, grateful when she accepted, and then lead the way in to the living room.
As any friend would, he then ventured in to her kitchen. Knowing each cupboard and drawer, inside and out, he went about making them each a cup of tea. He knew that a cup of hot tea could solve almost anything, especially paired with a decent biscuit.
"Aha!" He exclaimed with pride when he remembered where she hid the biscuits, his favourites.
Pulling together a tray full of goodness he brought it through to the living room but not without shoving a hobnob in his mouth, carrying it between his teeth as he toddled carefully in to the room.
Y/n looked up from the fray of her throw and chuckled.
"You just couldn't wait, could you?" She gestured to the half of a biscuit hanging out of his mouth. His eyes gleamed with pride at his ability to carry a tray without dropping anything, whilst successfully munching on a biscuit. He shook his head and laughed, taking the sweet food from his mouth.
"Can't resist a good hob nob!" He licked his lips, freeing them from the straying crumbs.
Her brow raised and delivered to him a really?! stare.
"What? Why are you looking at me like that, hmm?" He looked on innocently as he plonked himself down beside her on the sofa.
"A good hob nob, eh?" She tried so hard not to laugh, chewing on her lower lip.
He took a moment, trying to get what she meant. Ping! There it was. He then rolled his eyes and playfully nudged her, shoulder to shoulder.
"I didn't mean it like that!" He squeaked. "Stop making everything I say sound dirty, madam!"
"I can't help it! You're voice went all husky when you said hob nob." She pointed out. "I am pretty sure you were ready to make out with the biscuit the way you were sucking on it!"
"Now who's being the dirty one??" It was his turn to raise his brow at her.
She picked up her mug of tea, nursing the mug of warmth in her hands and bringing it slowly to her lips. She eyed him over the rim of the mug as she took the first sip, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
He picked up another biscuit and carefully dunked it in his tea, giving her that look of playful disapproval as he took a bite of the tea soaked sweetness.
She waited for the perfect moment, his mouth filled with biscuit before asking,
"Fancy a hob nob?" Her tone dropped, purposefully making her voice soft and sultry.
He looked over to her and watched as she slowly dipped her biscuit in her tea and pulled it back out just as tantalisingly slow. She brought the delicious goodness to her lips and bit in to it, just like all those women did in the chocolate adverts that made you laugh with how ridiculous it looked. His baby blues widened as she let out a moan, enjoying every crumb of his favourite biscuit.
"Honestly, woman!" He shook his head as she began to cry with laughter making sure to tell him about the look on his face.
He pouted and sipped at his tea, not amused in the slightest at her teasing him.
"You owe me one! Big time!"
At least it was safe to say that she was feeling much better even if it meant having to endure her being such a tease and picking on him. Poor Tom.
—————
For those who may not know, a HobNob is an oaty biscuit made here in the UK. It is well known for its dipping power compared to the feeble Rich Tea! (Although I love a good rich tea biccy!)
Fanfic: New Year’s Eve
This is a present for @lovetheturners. Since she wrote the great AU Unexpected, I’ve written her an AU Turnadette. @thatginchygal came with the idea, though she said a drabble would do. I’m afraid it has quite run away with me ;). TW: None
Shelagh hadn’t planned on visiting her colleague at New Year’s Eve unannounced, but she hadn’t planned on her apartment being damaged due to a fire started by her neighbours, either. Now, she stood in front of Doctor Turner’s door, willing herself to ring the bell. She had somehow expected him to live in a bigger house, maybe Victorian or Edwardian. Instead, he lived in a modern apartment.
“He doesn’t need much, it just being him and Timothy,” she told herself. “Not since his wife died in a car crash years ago. Like my mother.” She shifted her bag from one hand to the other, inhaled deeply, and rang. It took roughly two minutes before the door opened. Doctor Turner’s eyes – those delightful hazel eyes that she could surely drown in, would she let herself- widened in surprise as he took her in.
“Nurse Mannion,” he said, “Is something wrong? Am I needed at the hospital?” His hair was delightfully ruffled. He wore a smart button-down shirt that matched his navy jeans. There was a stain on the collar. The sleeves were rolled up, showing off his arms dusted with dark hair.
Shelagh blushed and lowered her eyes, trying not to get distracted by the bit of hair that was visible on his chest; he hadn’t done up all buttons. “No, Doctor Turner. It’s just that… There was a fire in my apartment block. Nothing too serious,” she added as his eyes grew big, “but there was a lot of smoke. None of the tenants are allowed to go back tonight, and I had nowhere else to go, with my family living in Scotland, and all the trains already departed… and I suppose I could’ve gone to one of the nurses, but I don’t expect they’re home, not at New Year’s Eve…”
“Of course. Come in,” he said, stepping aside to admit her entrance.
“Thank you,” she murmured. Her glasses fogged over in the hallway. Her cold fingers struggled with the buttons on her coat.
“Are you all right? Nothing damaged?” Doctor Turner asked.
“No, I’m perfectly fine. I don’t know about the apartment, though.”
“Here, let me take that,” the doctor said, taking the bag from her. His work-roughened thumb brushed her knuckles. She shivered.
“This doesn’t weigh anything,” he said.
“I didn’t have time to pack anything much,” she said. “I just took my phone, my toothbrush, and some clothes. Oh, and my Bible.” It had her name embossed in gold on the cover. Her mother had given it to her when she turned five. She took her glasses from her nose and wiped them on her scarf.
“Wise choices, Nurse,” he said. She couldn’t be sure, not without her glasses, but he seemed to wink at her. “Let me put the kettle on,” he said, and disappeared into the house.
“I’m really awfully sorry. I’m sure this isn’t how you planned on spending your evening,” Shelagh said as she trailed after him.
“I was going to spend it watching awful films, drinking alcohol, and eating too much chocolate and Turkish Delight,” he said from the kitchen, “so your visit is a most welcome distraction, really.”
“What about Timothy?” Sometimes, the doctor took his six year-old son with him to the hospital, when there was no one who could mind the child. Shelagh loved sitting with Timothy. She had a set of coloured pencils and crayons in her locker just for him.
“He’s in bed. Poor mite was tired as you won’t believe. I promised to wake him just before the new year starts. He wants to see the fireworks,” Doctor Turner said. “We can wake him as I show you the guest bedroom.” He fiddled with his sleeves, pushing them up further. He had a band aid on one of his hands, those big hands that had brushed hers just a moment ago, that would probably fit perfectly over…
Stop it.
“Can I help?” Shelagh asked, dawdling on the threshold into the kitchen.
The electric kettle had started humming. The counter was full of dirty dishes; plates with half-eaten slices of pizza, mugs with coffee that looked like it had solidified, forks that stuck to pans…
“I haven’t had time to clean that yet,” Doctor Turner murmured, turning away from her. She still saw the flash of crimson that shot into his face, though. He stacked some plates together, looked at some of the cups to see if there were two that he could still use.
“It’s a job for two, anyway,” she said. She pulled her jumper over her head, threw it on one of the kitchen chairs, and filled the sink with hot water. “Better not get that plaster of yours wet,” she said. She opened one of the cabinets, found a pair of rubber gloves, and put them on.
“You don’t have to,” he said as she tried to prise some spaghetti off a plate.
“Nonsense. I feel bad enough for coming here in the first place,” she said.
“Don’t,” he replied.
She looked up, her eyes locking with his. Another shiver climbed up her spine. Doctor Turner – she could’ve looked up his first name on Facebook, but she’d felt that it was something he should offer her herself, as if it was a gift- swallowed. There was a wrinkle next to his mouth. She wanted to reach out and smooth it with her thumb, but she was holding a plate. Besides, she was wearing yellow rubber gloves.
She dunked the plate in the hot, soapy water. “The sooner we get this done, the sooner you can get back to your couch and chocolates,” she quipped, praying he’d think her red cheeks were due to the steaming water.
“You make me wish I’d actually gotten something decent to eat, like olives and cheese, or those little sausages they always seem to have at cocktail parties,” Doctor Turner said. She handed him the cleaned plate so he could dry it.
“I’m a vegetarian,” she said.
“Oh.” He put the dried plate away, then walked to the fridge and opened it. “How do you feel about… half a jar of pickles, some onions in vinegar, and half a bell pepper?” He took the bell pepper out of the fridge and grimaced. “Scratch the bell pepper,” he said, and dropped it in the trash.
“I like pickles,” she reassured him. She put another wet mug on the rack to dry.
“I’ve also got milk and cereal, or some stale biscuits.”
“And chocolates and a box of Turkish Delight,” she said.
“Half a box, but yes. Praise my patients.” He grinned. “And a bottle of very good red wine, if you’re feeling up to it, Nurse Mannion. What do you say? Is it a night to imbibe?”
“Unless you propose we become completely decadent and drink it straight from the bottle, we really need to get these dishes done.”
“We’re not that naughty yet, I suppose,” he said. He took up the towel and started drying.
“Naughty Nurse Mannion and Devious Doctor Turner,” she joked.
He winked, which turned her insides liquid. She blushed some more, and wished she’d put on something else than her scuffed boots, a pair of faded jeans, and a ratty jumper. The T-shirt she wore under it had a permanent ketchup stain at the bottom, but she’d tucked her shirt into her jeans, so she was pretty sure the doctor wouldn’t see.
Do stop it, she told herself. It was one thing to have a massive crush on her colleague, to have it for months and months, and to go to him because there was nowhere else to go, but quite another to go breathless and giggly and ridiculous any time he did something nice. Like touching her hand. Or winking. Or pushing those sleeves a little higher. Some nights when she woke up and felt alone, she’d think of his face, of his pleasant voice and big hands, till a tiny throb started between her legs and she was quite breathless.
“I prefer pickles over onions,” she stammered.
“And chocolate over Turkish Delight?”
She nodded.
“What a perfect pair we make,” he said, and smiled.
I know, she thought.
***
After the dishes were clean and gleaming and returned to their proper places, Shelagh and Doctor Turner crashed on the couch. It was a leather one –“leather is a lot more forgiving with spilled juice”- in a rich blue. Doctor Turner had put some pickles on a plate, and chocolates and Turkish Delight on another. Shelagh chose one shaped like a Christmas stocking and ate it slowly as she nursed her cup of tea.
“What do you want to watch? There’s plenty of films on the telly tonight, but we can always go to Netflix and pick another one.”
“Which ones are on right now?”
Doctor Turner took out his phone. “Come and have a look,” he said. She had to scoot over and sit next to him to do it. Her hair brushed his face. She pushed a tendril behind her ear, stubbornly training her eyes on the small screen of his smartphone. She could feel his breath gently ghosting past her cheek, though, could feel the heat of his jean-clad leg as it almost pressed against hers. He wore some spicy aftershave that had almost worn off during the day; only the base note lingered now. It had mixed with the detergent they used in the hospital, and with something else that Shelagh couldn’t name.
“There’s a romantic comedy you might like,” he said, voice hushed since she was so near him.
We sound like conspirators, or lovers.
“Would you like that?” he murmured.
He could put his arm around me. I could turn my face to his, and kiss him and kiss him and kiss him…
“Kiss me,” she said.
He blinked, his long lashes throwing feathered shadows on his cheekbones. “What?”
“Kiss me, Kate. It’s one of the films that’s on tonight,” she stammered, blushing. “See?” She pointed to his phone.
“Ah. Well, let’s watch that, then.” He stood up to grab the remote control. Shelagh felt the loss of his warmth and scent keenly. She kicked her boots off, tucked her feet under her, and hugged herself.
Doctor Turner sat down farther from her than before. She thought she saw his fists uncurl then tighten again from the corner of her eye, as if he wanted to do something with them, as if he wanted to touch her. She might have been wrong, though.
***
The film ended at half past eleven. Doctor Turner stretched as soon as the credits started to roll. His joints popped. He winced and rubbed his shoulders. “Don’t ever get old, Nurse Mannion. It wreaks havoc on your joints.”
“You’re not old,” she softly scolded him.
“Older than you, at any rate.”
“A lot of the doctors at the hospital are. Now, I’ll go and use the ladies’ room, if you don’t mind,” she said, getting up from the couch with joints that didn’t creak.
“The bathroom is up the stairs, first door on your left.”
“I’ll deposit my toothbrush there for later, then. Thanks.” She zipped her bag open, took out her toothbrush and deodorant, and made for the bathroom.
The Turner household had and old-fashioned tub on gilded legs. The spout had the shape of a lion’s head. Shelagh stroked it, then applied some fresh deodorant and studied herself in the mirror. Her cheeks were flushed. She touched them with her fingertips, feeling the warmth seep from skin to skin. She’d have to wish the doctor a happy new year in less than half an hour. If they’d already woken Timothy, that might mean she would not get carried away by her own romantic feelings. Afterwards, she would slip into the guestroom, put on her pyjamas, and try to sleep in an unfamiliar bed. Hopefully, she would be able to move back into her apartment tomorrow. She didn’t want to put the doctor out, and hotels were rather expensive at this time of year. She could always ask one of the nurses if she could stay with them, she supposed.
“It’s just one night,” she told her reflection. Good thing, too; she hadn’t brought much clothes with her. There was only what she wore now, and clean underwear, another T-shirt, and her pyjamas. She could hardly let the doctor see her in those, though. Just thinking of the lacey nightdress made her blush. It had been a bit of a lark when she’d bought it, egged on by Trixie and the other nurses. Her real pyjamas had been in need of a wash, though, and there had been so little time to pick what to bring and what to leave behind…
She took care of her bursting bladder, washed her hands, and went back to the living room. She stopped dead on the threshold.
Doctor Turner was holding up her rather daring nightgown and staring at it with knit eyebrows, his mouth a little ‘o’. Blood shot to her cheeks. She marched in and snatched it from his hands, stuffing it in her bag. The silk slithered over her hands. It refused to be put out of sight completely. “It was in the bag for a reason,” Shelagh said, not looking at the doctor. She was blushing so fiercely that tears stood in her eyes.
“I’m sorry,” Doctor Turner said, voice thick. “Your bag fell over. I didn’t mean to look at your possessions.”
“Maybe I can still go to a hotel. I’m sorry I came here. We’re only colleagues, after all, and…”
He took her hand. She stilled, but couldn’t bring herself to face him.
“Please look at me,” he whispered.
Helpless, she obeyed.
“I’m sorry,” he repeated. “I’m sorry I looked into your bag. I shouldn’t have. And I’m sorry for what I’m about to do.”
“What are you about…” she started, but then, he kissed her, and she couldn’t talk anymore. He had cupped her face with two hands, but one now slid down her throat and shoulder and came to rest in the small of her back. She slung her arms around his neck, her knees far weaker than she could have imagined. He tasted of Turkish Delight and wine.
I could get drunk on him and him alone, she thought.
He slipped the tip of his tongue between her lips and curled it upwards. The tiny throb that she sometimes stilled when she was alone in her bed came alive purringly. Something in her belly coiled. She sighed into his mouth, one hand at the nape of his neck, brushing the little hairs that grew there. “Don’t be sorry,” she said when they broke their kiss.
He walked her back till she fell on the couch, her head hitting the pillow propped in one of its corner. “I’ve imagined doing this for a very long time,” Doctor Turner said, sitting down in the space between her legs.
“How long?” she asked.
“For months. Maybe longer,” he confessed. He took her face between his hands again and nipped her bottom lip.
The throb was pain now. She pulled him closer, moaning as she felt his weight on her. “I’ve loved you from the moment I knew you,” she admitted, her voice tremulous and breathy.
“It sometimes feels to me I’ve loved you even longer than that.” With the hand he wasn’t using to keep himself propped up he caressed her breast. Her back arched. She shivered, even though she was burning.
“Doctor Turner,” she moaned.
“Do call me Patrick, Nurse Mannion.” Offered like a gift, like she imagined.
“Patrick,” she said, rolling the ‘r’ like a pebble in her mouth, breath catching on the ‘k’. “Only if you call me Shelagh.”
“Shelagh,” he promised, kissing her before she could say anything more, every kiss punctuated by fireworks outside. Their light painted the living room yellow and orange and red and green.
“Is that why you came here tonight?” he whispered between kisses. “Because you imagined doing this too?"
“I’ve never done this before,” she said.
His hands stilled. She opened her eyes, studying him between her lashes. He was smiling, the wrinkle beside his mouth more prominent than ever. She touched it with a trembling finger, following its course from his cheek to his chin. “What’s wrong?” she whispered.
He took her hand and kissed every fingertip. “Nothing, my darling, my Shelagh. It’s just… It’s a rather big thing to take from you. Maybe we should save it for another time, when I haven’t had too much to drink.” He winked. “Maybe we should do this when you’re wearing that rather daring nightgown.”
She smiled. “Do you think so?”
“Yes. There’s no hurry, is there?”
“Well, I’ve no idea when I’m allowed back into my apartment…”
He laughed at that, pulled her up, and took her in his arms. “Have you seen the time?” he murmured in her ear.
“No.”
“The new year has started. Happy new year, Shelagh.”
“Happy new year, Patrick. Shouldn’t we wake Timothy? He’ll be so disappointed if he won’t see the fireworks,” Shelagh said, resting her forehead against Patrick’s.
“We should,” he agreed, but they stood in each other’s embrace for a good while yet, reluctant to let the other go now that they had found each other.
Cream Soup and Tea
Location: Wasabou kanakura yumemiya, TST? Tsim Sha Tsui
Price: Part of a meal - $82 HKD (black truffle and mushroom rice with goose liver) and $98 HKD (pan fried salmon and grilled chicken with rice)
(2020 me: :’) fancy restaurant food, what a faraway dream in these pandemic days)
It's creamy and a half way between a good filling thick broth and a more watery soup. It actually looks better than the photo shows because I had a little taste and before I knew it half of it was gone because it's SO GOOD. To the green herbs on top that adds a splash of colour and the crunchy biscuit dunked in to bring extra texture and also little clams that complements the soup really well. The soup subdues the natural clam fishiness and smooths it over with sweet yet salty cream. Amazing. I’m sad it ended.
And I know I usually don't comment on the food but Goodness Gracious, is it amazing as well. I got the black truffle and mushroom with goose liver and rice and damn. Damn. I know it looks like a tiny slab of meat on a cushion of rice, but god is it good. The goose liver is so rich and fried so well. The moment I bit into it there as an explosion of juice and flavour that just. Completely took me away. The rice was its own mushroomy experience as well but managed to do its job and soften the impact of the rich and salty liver just the same. The only down side for me is that it looks like a small portion, but at the price of $82 for a meal of such prestigious ingredients, it's about what I can ask for.
The other plate, my mom's, was pan fried salmon and grilled chicken with rice. Usually, badly made cooked salmon seems to lose its taste in the process, so this wholesome salmon flavour on my tongue right now suggests a brilliantly skilled culinary execution had taken place. Neither the fish nor the chicken was stringy or in any way dry. It was juices galore, and both had a soft inside matched gloriously with a crispy skin.
Last but not least, the tea at the end is the perfect amount of sweet and milky, a good full stop to a juicy sentence.
25 Low-Sugar Baking Projects for Not-Too-Sweet Treats
I love sugar as much as anyone; it's the backbone of most everything I do, since it provides desserts with volume, structure, body, flavor, and, oh yeah, sweetness (its least important job as far as I'm concerned). Sugar's at the top of the food pyramid for a reason, a sweet cap to an otherwise balanced diet, something to be consumed in moderation.
For the most part, I accomplish that with portion control: thinner slices of cake, smaller scoops of ice cream, one cookie instead of two. But a number of my favorite recipes have a relatively low amount of added sugar, around eight grams or less per serving. For those who love baking, but feel like cutting back on sugar for one reason or another, these recipes should fit the bill.
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Like the original, my homemade Fig Newtons feel pretty virtuous. The cakey cookie is lightly sweetened with honey and brown sugar, while the filling itself is made from nothing more than dried figs, plain applesauce, and a squeeze of fresh orange juice. It's a chewy, fruity snack that's not too sweet or rich and easy to customize with the variations in my cookbook (including apricot-strawberry, blueberry-lime, cherry-banana, and...bacon!).
This simple galette is primarily sweetened by the pears, with just a few spoonfuls of added sugar to draw out their juices. Cardamom, Chinese five spice, and vanilla bean amplify the natural flavor of the pear, which stands in creamy contrast to the crispy crust below. It's the ideal dessert to conclude a night of tapas or wine and cheese, but to be honest, I'm all about having it for brunch.
Vanilla Pear Galette »
The bulk of sugar in these lemony scones comes from a sprinkle of turbinado on top, an entirely optional (though delightfully crunchy) addition. The dough itself leans on fresh blueberries for sweetness, with just 2 teaspoons of sugar to help with flavor and browning.
Lemon-Blueberry Scones »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
My buttermilk granola has less added sugar than its commercial counterparts, just enough to help it brown and crisp in the oven. With toasted sugar, that sweetness is even milder, tempered by a hint of caramel complexity. Serve it for breakfast with Greek yogurt, or grab a handful whenever you need a light and crunchy snack.
Buttermilk Granola »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
In most recipes, sugar serves some key structural role, but in these grainy English muffins, I use honey in an entirely optional way—to serve as a sweet counterpoint to the graham-y flavor of whole wheat. You can dial it back to taste, but I'd use at least an ounce, so the yeast has a snack during its long, overnight rise.
English Muffins »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Few things are as satisfying as homemade bagels that turn out just as blistered, chewy, and flavorful as if they'd come from an old-school bakery. There's just a pinch of sugar to help fuel the dough's slow, overnight rise and a bit of malt syrup in the boiling water for a glossy brown and aromatic crust, but the total amount is still well below our 8 gram threshold—even if you opt to make cinnamon raisin bagels instead.
Bagels »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Look, it's not my fault if you wind up drowning these in maple syrup, but the waffles themselves have only a pinch of sugar in the batter. Instead of doing an overnight rise, I often make these brown-butter waffles first thing in the morning. Then I let them rise all day, so I can griddle them up to serve along with soups and stews or (my fave) fried chicken.
Brown-Butter Yeast-Raised Waffles »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
I learned to make biscuits when I was about two years old, less a reflection of my skill than a testament to the truly foolproof technique—smushing butter into flour with reckless abandon. Biscuits are a fast and simple breakfast or the foundation of a breakfast sandwich, but they're also an easy side for just about any meal (well, any Southern meal).
Light and Fluffy Biscuits Recipe »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
As with my lemon-blueberry scones, the dough here is just barely sweetened, with most of the sugar coming from the chocolate itself. So instead of a sweet milk chocolate, choose something bitter and dark for a bold take on chocolate scones.
Chocolate Scones »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Thanks to whole wheat flour, digestive biscuits have an amazing, graham cracker–like flavor and crunch. Paired with a shiny coat of dark chocolate, these crisp but tender digestives are immensely satisfying with a cup of tea (and when sugar is of no concern, they're the perfect size to sandwich around a toasted marshmallow for s'mores).
They may be showered in powdered sugar, but that's only because Mexican wedding cookies (a.k.a., Russian tea cakes; a.k.a., snowballs; a.k.a., Danish wedding cookies) start with an almost savory dough. And, of the sugar that's sprinkled on top, a good deal is lost along the way, scattered across your baking sheet and (real talk) down the front of your shirt.
Mexican Wedding Cookies »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Though lightly glazed in barley malt syrup, homemade Wheat Thins don't require much added sugar, so you can grab a handful of crispy crackers without overdoing it (whatever that means to you). Plus, there's a little more glaze than strictly necessary, so a good deal of the sugar that's present on paper won't ever make it to the crackers themselves. With a sprinkling of coarse salt and the grainy crunch of wheat germ, these savory-sweet crackers are as hearty as they are crisp.
Homemade Wheat Thins »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Unlike the epic crunch of homemade Wheat Thins, these whole wheat crackers are thick and tender with a gentle snap (like the Carr's ones you buy). They're fun and easy to make (the dough comes together super fast in a food processor), and they will keep up to a month in an airtight container. Pull them out as a homemade addition to cheese plates, or smear one with peanut butter for a simple snack.
Whole Wheat Crackers »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Out of everything on this list, these are my all-time favorite for snacking; they're unambiguously salty, cheesy, and crisp. Like any other cracker, these have a great shelf life, so I like to make a big batch to enjoy over a few weeks. Plus, when I'm feeling creative, homemade Cheez-Its are easy to customize with additional herbs and spices or alternative types of cheese.
Homemade Cheez-Its »
With a cheesy crust, chunks of salty ham, slivers of scallion, and shredded Gruyère scattered throughout the dough, savory scones make a hearty breakfast, or they can be cut small to serve alongside bowls of creamy tomato soup.
Ham and Cheese Scones »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
With fresh parsley, a dash of onion powder, garlic, paprika, and cayenne, these cheddar biscuits have a bold flavor that can stand up to even the heartiest bowl of chili or chowder. So grab a spoon, dollop the dough onto a half-sheet pan, and start baking!
Garlic-Cheddar Biscuits »
It breaks my heart to see Irish soda bread relegated to a bit of St. Patrick's Day kitsch, especially when recipes treat it like some sort of fruity scone. In reality, Irish soda bread is a crusty loaf that's chewy and satisfying enough to pair with any meal or even just a charcuterie plate. It has an almost pretzel-like flavor that goes with any sort of stew or braise.
Irish Soda Bread »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Like bagels, my favorite dinner rolls are briefly boiled before baking, producing a crackly crust that's glossy and eggshell thin. Inside, they're fluffy and light—perfect for mopping up sauces and stews. Thanks to a long overnight rise these rolls can be a make-ahead element for family dinners and holiday gatherings, letting you knock out the work of making and shaping the rolls a day in advance.
Crisp and Fluffy Dinner Rolls »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
I've always thought of chicken pot pie as a secret pastry since the best part is the crust, whether you opt for drop biscuits or a flaky lid (I'm partial to hearty whole wheat). But even if the crust is the star, the filling has to do its part, which means the chicken has to be juicy and the sauce has to be thick and full of flavor.
These biscuits get their sweetness from thick and mellow sweet potato purée. The sweet potatoes also lend a bright orange hue and wonderfully buttery flavor. Serve the biscuits alongside hearty soups and stews or with a spoonful of jam.
The Best Sweet Potato Biscuits »
Angel biscuits are buttery and tender, but their flavor and texture is more similar to a Parker House roll than a traditional biscuit. After proofing overnight, they're ready to bake in the morning, so you can enjoy them for breakfast, lunch, and maybe even dinner.
Pumpkin purée transforms a regular white sandwich loaf into a beautiful and flavorful bread. The pumpkin purée imparts the bread with a subtle earthiness and seasonal flair. It's a versatile loaf perfect for toasting, sandwiching cold cuts, cubing for bread pudding, or whipping up a grilled cheese sandwich.
Yeasted Pumpkin Bread »
It's true that these are technically cookies, but their almost-savory flavor gives them balance and depth. With biscotti, the exact amount of sugar per serving depends on how you slice it, so aim for 30 12 millimeter pieces to keep the sugar in check. Lean and crunchy with a refreshing anise flavor, they're perfect for dunking in fortified wine or snacking on with a cup of coffee.
Almond Biscotti With Anise »
Toning down the sweetness in these gingerbread cookies allows the rich flavors of freshly ground ginger, orange zest, and warm spices to shine through. Despite the addition of both brown sugar and molasses, these cookies are rolled so thin the yield is quite high, leaving only 3 grams of sugar per 2 1/2-inch cookie. Serve them plain or with a thin layer of royal icing. Either way, they'll be gone in a snap.
Gingerbread Cookies »
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
This banana bread is classic, but it's certainly not plain. While it's an optional step, toasting the sugar will bring the bread an added layer of depth. Ripe bananas give the loaf structure, while replacing some of the all-purpose flour with oat flour makes for a moister bread. Baked as two 8-inch loaves, cut into 10 slices each, our classic banana bread technically qualifies for the list—so just keep an eye on the serving size. However you cut it, our take on this recipe will be a hit.
