Chopta in Winter: Must-Have Gear and Essentials for a Safe Trip
A trip to Chopta in winter is like stepping into a snowy paradise. Known as the "Mini Switzerland of India," Chopta transforms into a breathtaking winter wonderland between December and February, drawing adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers. However, the freezing temperatures and snow-covered terrain present unique challenges. To make your winter trip to Chopta Tour Packages both safe and enjoyable, itâs essential to pack the right gear and prepare for the harsh weather conditions.
Hereâs a comprehensive guide to the must-have gear and essentials youâll need for your winter adventure in Chopta.
1. Layered Clothing for the Cold
Winter temperatures in Chopta often drop below zero, especially at night. Dressing in layers is key to staying warm while maintaining flexibility for activities like trekking.
Base Layer: Start with thermal underwear (tops and bottoms) made of moisture-wicking material like merino wool or polyester. This will keep sweat away from your body, ensuring you stay dry and warm.
Mid Layer: A fleece or wool sweater serves as an insulating layer to trap body heat. If you tend to feel colder, consider a down jacket for extra warmth.
Outer Layer: Your final layer should be a waterproof and windproof jacket. This will protect you from snow, cold winds, and any moisture that could seep in during activities like trekking.
Winter Trekking Pants: Opt for pants that are water-resistant and insulated, with enough flexibility for movement. Avoid jeans or cotton clothing, as they get wet easily and lose insulation when damp.
2. Proper Footwear
The terrain in Chopta can be slippery and icy in winter, making sturdy footwear essential. Comfortable feet will make or break your experience, especially if you're trekking to Tungnath or Chandrashila.
Waterproof Trekking Boots: Invest in a pair of waterproof trekking boots with a solid grip. Ensure that they have good ankle support to prevent injuries on uneven terrain.
Insulated Socks: Woolen socks are your best bet for keeping your feet warm. Itâs advisable to carry extra pairs of socks, especially thermals, to change into if your feet get wet.
Gaiters: These are essential if you plan to trek in deep snow. Gaiters fit over your boots and lower legs to prevent snow from entering your shoes, keeping your feet dry.
3. Head and Hand Protection
A significant amount of heat is lost through the head and extremities, so it's crucial to cover up well in Chopta's freezing conditions.
Woolen or Fleece Beanie: A snug-fitting hat or beanie will keep your head warm. For extra coverage, choose one that also covers your ears.
Gloves: Go for waterproof, insulated gloves that offer dexterity. Consider wearing a thin liner glove underneath for added warmth and the ability to use your hands without removing the main glove.
Neck Gaiter or Scarf: A neck gaiter or woolen scarf will protect your neck and face from the biting cold winds, particularly at higher altitudes like Chandrashila Peak.
4. Essential Trekking Gear
Chopta is renowned for its snow trekking, especially the popular trails leading to Tungnath Temple and Chandrashila Peak. For these treks, some additional gear is required to ensure safety and comfort in the snow.
Trekking Poles: These are incredibly useful for maintaining balance, especially on icy or uneven paths. They also help reduce strain on your knees during steep climbs or descents.
Crampons or Microspikes: In snow-covered areas, crampons or microspikes can be attached to your boots to provide extra grip, preventing slips and falls on icy patches.
Headlamp: Winter days are shorter, and if you're trekking early in the morning or in the late afternoon, a headlamp is essential for visibility. Make sure to carry extra batteries as cold weather can drain power faster.
Backpack with Rain Cover: Choose a comfortable, water-resistant backpack with enough space for snacks, water, and extra layers. A built-in or separate rain cover is essential to protect your belongings from snow or unexpected rainfall.
5. Camping Essentials
If you're planning to snow camp in Chopta, staying warm and safe in the extreme conditions is a priority. Ensure you have the right equipment for a comfortable night outdoors.
Four-Season Tent: Winter camping in Chopta requires a four-season tent designed to withstand snow and cold. These tents are made to handle the weight of snow and provide better insulation against the cold winds.
Sleeping Bag (Sub-Zero Rated): Opt for a sleeping bag with a temperature rating suitable for sub-zero temperatures. A mummy-style sleeping bag that hugs the body is ideal for conserving heat.
Sleeping Pad: A good-quality insulated sleeping pad is crucial to prevent the cold from seeping up from the ground. It adds an extra layer of warmth between you and the frozen ground.
Portable Stove and Fuel: If you're camping, you'll need a portable stove to prepare hot meals and boil water. Make sure the fuel you carry is suitable for high-altitude conditions.
6. Hydration and Nutrition Essentials
Though it may not feel like it in the cold, staying hydrated is vital during winter treks, especially at high altitudes where dehydration can contribute to altitude sickness.
Hydration Bladder or Water Bottle: Carry an insulated water bottle to prevent your water from freezing. For longer treks, a hydration bladder with an insulated sleeve can be useful, but ensure the tube doesnât freeze in extreme cold.
Energy Bars and Snacks: Pack high-energy, lightweight snacks like energy bars, nuts, and dry fruits to keep your energy levels up during treks. In the cold, your body burns more calories, so having quick bites on hand is essential.
7. Altitude and Safety Considerations
Chopta is located at a high altitude, and the treks to Tungnath and Chandrashila take you even higher. At these altitudes, the cold weather can intensify altitude sickness and other health concerns, so being prepared is essential.
First-Aid Kit: Always carry a basic first-aid kit that includes band-aids, antiseptic cream, pain relievers, and any personal medications you may need. Include blister care supplies if you're trekking.
Sunscreen and Lip Balm: It might be winter, but the high-altitude sun combined with snow glare can cause sunburn. Carry sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and a moisturizing lip balm to protect against chapped lips.
Altitude Sickness Medication: Chopta and Chandrashila are located at elevations that may cause altitude sickness. Carry appropriate medication like Diamox to prevent or treat symptoms, and make sure to ascend slowly and stay hydrated.
8. Additional Essentials
Thermos: A thermos filled with hot water, tea, or coffee can be a lifesaver in the cold, providing warmth and hydration on the go.
Hand Warmers: These small packets can be placed inside your gloves or boots for extra warmth during freezing conditions.
Power Bank: Cold temperatures drain battery life faster, so carry a power bank to keep your phone, camera, or headlamp charged.
Final Thoughts: Prepare for an Epic Winter Adventure
Winter in Chopta is a magical experience, but it also requires careful planning and the right gear. Whether youâre trekking to Tungnath Temple, summiting Chopta Chandrashila Trek , or camping under a starry, snow-filled sky, ensuring youâre well-prepared will make your trip both safe and enjoyable. With the right clothing, trekking gear, and winter essentials, youâll be able to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of Choptaâs snow-covered hills while staying warm, comfortable, and safe.

As you gear up for your next skiing adventure, one essential item often overlooked is a top-quality skiing boot bag. Your ski boots are not just any footwear; they are the key to your performance on the slopes, and protecting this investment is crucial. With a range of features to consider and tips to maximize its use, finding the perfect skiing boot bag can make all the difference in ensuring safe travels and convenient organization. Let's dive into why investing in a high-quality boot bag is necessary for every skier heading out on their next snowy escapade! Skiing Boot Bags For Sale Online USA
The importance of protecting your investment in ski boots
Your ski boots are more than just gear; they're your connection to the mountain, your support system as you navigate icy slopes and challenging terrain. Investing in a quality pair of ski boots is an investment in performance and comfort. However, these essential pieces of equipment can quickly deteriorate without proper care and protection.
A skiing boot bag protects against potential damage during travel or storage. From sharp edges on other gear to harsh weather conditions, your ski boots face various threats that can compromise their integrity over time. By housing them in a dedicated boot bag when not in use, you ensure they remain safe from scratches, dings, or exposure to moisture.
Furthermore, protecting your investment in ski boots extends their lifespan and preserves their functionality season after season. Proper care also minimizes the need for costly repairs or premature replacements down the line. So, safeguarding your ski boots with a high-quality boot bag isn't just about convenienceâit's about ensuring peak performance each time you hit the slopes!
Features to look for in a high-quality skiing boot bag
When choosing a high-quality skiing boot bag, there are several key features to remember. Durability is essential. Look for a bag made from sturdy materials like reinforced nylon or polyester to ensure it can withstand the rigors of travel and protect your gear.
Another essential feature is ample storage space. A good ski boot bag should have separate compartments for your boots, helmet, goggles, gloves, and other accessories. This helps you stay organized and makes packing and unpacking your gear quickly at the slopes easier.
Comfortable carrying options are also crucial. Check for padded shoulder straps or handles that make transporting the bag more comfortable, especially if you need to walk long distances.
Additionally, look for bags with ventilation features to prevent moisture buildup and odors after a day on the mountain. Proper ventilation helps prolong the life of your boots by keeping them dry between uses.
Consider extra pockets or compartments for storing small items like keys, wallets, or snacks conveniently within reach while on the go. These thoughtful details can make a big difference in your overall skiing experience!
Packing and organizing your ski gear in a boot bag
Efficiency is critical when packing and organizing your ski gear in a boot bag. Start by placing your ski boots in the designated compartments to keep them secure during transport. Ensure they fit snugly to prevent any shifting that could damage the shoes.
Next, roll up your ski socks and stash them in one of the smaller pockets to keep them separate from the rest of your gear. This way, you can quickly grab them when you need a fresh pair after hitting the slopes all day. Don't forget about your helmet â place it on top of everything else so it doesn't get crushed or deformed during travel.
Utilize additional pockets for storing smaller items like goggles, gloves, or hand warmers. Keeping these essentials organized will save you time rummaging through your bag when you're ready to hit the slopes. Remember, proper organization protects your gear and ensures a hassle-free skiing experience!
Additional Tips for Maintaining and Protecting Your Investment
Regular maintenance is key to prolonging the lifespan of your ski boots and ensuring they perform at their best. After a day on the slopes, make sure to dry your boots thoroughly before storing them in your boot bag. If left unchecked, moisture can lead to mold and odors. Invest in a boot dryer or stuff newspapers inside your boots to absorb any remaining moisture.
Inspect your boots for any signs of wear and tear regularly. Replace worn-out parts like soles or buckles promptly to prevent further damage. Cleaning the exterior with a damp cloth will help remove dirt and salt residue that can degrade the materials over time.
When not in use, store your skiing boot bag in a cool, dry place to avoid exposure to extreme temperatures or sunlight that could weaken the fabric. Avoid over packing, as this can put unnecessary strain on zippers and seams, potentially causing them to break prematurely.
Enjoy Safe and Convenient Travel with a Quality Skiing Boot Bag
Investing in a top-quality skiing boot bag protects your valuable ski gear. Choosing a durable and well-designed bag ensures that your equipment stays safe during travel, storage, and transportation to the slopes. When selecting the perfect boot bag for your needs, look for features such as padded compartments, sturdy zippers, ventilation options, and ample storage space.
Remember to pack your ski boots properly by placing them in the designated compartments within the boot bag. Organize additional gear like helmets, gloves, goggles, and accessories in separate sections to keep everything secure and easily accessible. Maintaining your ski equipment by keeping it clean and dry will help prolong its lifespan.
Knowing your investment is well-protected, you can enjoy peace of mind with a high-quality skiing boot bag. Say goodbye to tangled straps or damaged gearâinstead, embrace hassle-free travels with all your essentials neatly packed in one convenient place. Choose a reliable online retailer offering top-notch skiing boot bags for sale in the USA, and get ready for an unforgettable skiing experience!

Itâs vital for any camper or hiker to know what to do if a snake bites you. But, more importantly, what you should do to avoid getting into that situation in the first place.
Writing the title of this article, let alone the content, makes me shudder. And each encounter with a snake during my camping expeditions has given me heart palpitations. However, itâs an irrational fear as there are rarely any deaths from snakes in Australia.
Knowing a little bit about snake behaviour and adopting these easy tips could not only save your life but also help you enjoy your camping trip with more confidence.
Tips for staying safe around snakes
1. Wear appropriate clothing
Nearly all snake bites occur on the ankles, hands and lower parts of the legs so covering up these areas will significantly reduce the possibility that a snakeâs venom will enter your bloodstream.
You might think you need to wear metal armour to prevent a snake injecting venom, but most venomous snakes in Australia have relatively short fangs and tend to wipe venom into the wound rather than inject it deep into the skin. A good pair of gaiters or jeans will make it more or less impossible for an Australian snake to penetrate the skin.
It goes without saying that you should wear closed footwear. Not only will it protect your feet, but it also creates more vibrations than sandals or thongs. This will help scare snakes away before you reach them.
Closed shoes and gaiters are a must for heading into snake territory. Photo: Melanie Rees
2. Carry first aid
Whether youâre going for a short hike or a long camping trip, itâs a good idea to be prepared for the possibility of a snake bite. Your first aid kit should contain pressure immobilisation bandages â heavy crepe bandages are ideal in fact.
3. Ensure you have some form of communication
If youâre in an area with no mobile reception, try to source another form of communication or at least let someone, such as a Park Ranger, know your movements. A PLB is an important piece of kit to carry if youâre heading to remote areas.
One of the crucial things, if bitten, is to keep the injured limb immobilised, so youâll need to stay still. Then use a PLB to call for help.
3. Be vigilant when hiking
Snakes are incredibly shy creatures and most will feel your foot vibrations and get out of the way before you even see them. There are exceptions though. When snakes are just warming up, they can be slower to react to your presence, and if taken by surprise they can strike without warning.
The main tip for hiking is to watch where youâre walking. When hiking over logs and rocks, itâs a good idea to step on the log and then over it, to make sure you can see the other side. Some snakes may also hide in nooks in rock faces or sun themselves on rock ledges so always make sure you can see where youâre putting your hands. Or wear gloves and a long sleeve shirt if youâre climbing up a rocky path.
Of course, watching where you walk is easier said than done. When youâre bushwalking, youâre usually looking at your surroundings, not where youâre putting your feet, which is why itâs important to carry first aid equipment and wear proper protection.
Keeping your site clean is hugely important to prevent snakes from hiding under your gear. Photo: Melanie Rees
4. Keep your campsite clean
Snakes love mice. If you leave rubbish around the camping ground, it can attract rodents and hence snakes. There are many reasons to keep your campsite clean, but if you ever needed an additional incentive, this is it. Snakes also like to hide under things, so keep picnic rugs and other items off the ground when youâre away from the campsite.
5. Check your sleeping bags & boots
Because snakes see humans as a threat, itâs incredibly unlikely that a snake will come into a campsite while youâre there. But they could curl up in warm places like your sleeping bag if you leave them it in the open while youâre out.
Itâs always a good idea to keep sleeping bags closed up in your tent or the in back of the car while youâre out hiking. If you forget, shaking them out is good practice, just to make sure you donât cuddle up with any unwanted visitors at night.
The same goes for shoes. Boots are a bit like hollow logs and even a metre long snake could hide in them. If youâre paranoid like me, you can stuff socks in your boots at night and shake them out in the morning.
6. Be careful when collecting firewood
If you have permission to collect firewood, itâs a good idea to wear a long-sleeved shirt and gloves, as snakes often hide under leaf litter and logs.
If collecting wood at night, I always carry a torch to ensure I can see where Iâm putting my hands and that the stick Iâm picking up is indeed a stick.
What to do if you encounter a snake:
If you see a snake, stay calm, back away and wait for it to move. Snakes will only strike humans when they feel threatened.
Donât provoke it or make any sudden movements that they could perceive as a threat.
Never try to kill a snake.
Like all native animals, theyâre protected, but also the majority of bites occur when people try to kill them.
If the snake wonât move, donât poke it with a stick or shovel. Many snakes can strike quickly from a distance.
While foot stamping might encourage a snake to move off a track, Iâd personally only do this if I am a long distance from the snake (i.e. at least several metres) as it can still be seen as a threatening action, especially if the snake is cornered.
Take the time to learn how to treat a snake bite in case the worst happens. Photo: SA Ambulance Service
Treat all snakes with caution
Treat all snakes as potentially dangerous, even if theyâre tiny. Baby snakes are just as dangerous as adults are, if not more so. This is partly because theyâre more difficult to spot, but they also tend to be more skittish and unpredictable.
Even treat dead snakes as dangerous. Snakes can still have biting reflexes and the venom can remain on the fangs long after its death.
Treating a snakebite
Treat all suspected snakebites as life-threatening.
In Australia, bites might just look like a superficial scratch and not the two puncture wounds you might expect.
Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage to the limb immediately, splint the limb and call an ambulance.
Even in a remote location, you should keep the limb immobilised and stay calm and still.
The bandage should be applied to the whole length of the limb and be as tight as you would strap a sprained ankle.
Never wash or cut the wound, as the hospital will use venom on the skin to identify the snake.
Donât suck out the venom and donât apply a tourniquet instead of an immobilisation bandage.
First aid and snake awareness courses are a good idea if you want specific information as well.
Managing your fear of snakes
It might be reassuring to know that even though Australia is infamous for its venomous snakes and we love the outdoors, there are far fewer deaths in Australia than America, India, Africa and many other countries.
Itâs rare for Australian snakes to strike. Itâs even more uncommon that the fangs will get through clothing and the skin. When they do, most snakes donât actually inject any venom or itâs in such small amounts that antivenom isnât needed.
So, there you have it, what every camper should know about snakes
If you wear the right clothing, go prepared and stay vigilant, itâs unlikely you will ever get into a situation where you wonât be able to confidently enjoy your holiday.
Itâs important that youâre prepared, so ensure you have a snake bite kit and first aid kit on you at all times. You might even come to love our slithering friends. After all, they really are beautiful creatures and crucial to the Australian bushland.
Have you ever had a close encounter with a snake in the bush? Let us know in the comments.Â

10 Features not to Forget When Building a House
Having absolute necessities present inside your house is a good thing if you want to live a comfortable life for a long time. When you are building a custom house, you can add certain unique features to it. There have been many times where people decided to create a new custom home but forget to add different elements. Because of this, they had to demolish their houses again to rebuild them with those specific new sorts. And this rebuilding process can cost a lot of time and money.
If you are building a new house for your family and want to have certain features, both unique and functional, you need to keep a budget in your mind before you consider the various options. After you have set a financial plan, you then have to research what features you would like the constructor to add to your house project. This article will be helpful to you for not forgetting the special features while building your house.

As you are going to buy different appliances and products that require you to power them through an electrical outlet, you will need to install them beforehand. Consider adding extra outlets inside your bedrooms, inside the kitchen, in the garage, and in the bathroom. In this case, having more is better than having less. You will hate it when you need to power something, and all the electrical outlets are already in use of power existing appliances. So, it is a good idea to have a spare electrical outlet present in every part of your house. To achieve such a thing, you can ask your contractor to place wires accordingly, before cementing the walls. Project homes Sydney is a great source to accomplish such an entity.

Also, consider insulating and heating your garage if you want your car to start on a cold, snowy morning. It is a must-have feature that you should not forget.
3).Water Heater
Just like heating your garage and other rooms during the winters, a water heater can be beneficial in the winter season. Nobody likes to wake up in the morning and take a cold shower in the freezing weather. So, to avoid this from happening, install a water heater that has a functional heating capacity. It will provide you with hot water for the whole year. There are many water heater available on the market that you can choose. These come in different shapes and sizes and with different water heating capacity. Choose an option this suitable for you and provides you with an ample amount of hot water.
4). Garage Floor Drain

The presence of a floor drain will let you get rid of water easier when compared to not having one. Installing a floor drain inside your garage is the best possible thing you can do. When you clean your car inside your garage regularly, water may get trapped, which results in it polling inside of it.
5). Heated Flooring
The Heated flooring is trendy in countries that experience constant cold temperatures. It can make a massive difference to your mood, especially when you have trouble getting out of bed and placing your feet on the cold floor. This feature is easy to install when your house is under construction. However, it can become challenging if you decide to add it afterward. You will have to break the whole floor and place heating pads and install an entire new flooring from scratch.
6).Mudroom
A mudroom is a small room near the entrance of your house, which allows you to change your clothes, store your footwear and jackets. By having such a room present, you will be able to stay organized and keep your house free of a mess at all times. Also, installing a sink inside such a room can be very beneficial as well.
7). Extra Wiring
Having some sort of extra wiring present along with your first wiring can save you a lot of headaches if the primary installation gets broken and stops working. This will come in handy when you install a certain new appliance, like a speaker system, and you do not want the wires to be visible. Also, it will save you money as you will not have to break down your walls to pass through new wires.
8). Backup Generator Pre-wiring
Getting your house pre-wired for your backup generator will allow you to hook it up when you decide to get one quickly. Also, a good practice would be to have a small space made of concrete slabs present to store your generator correctly. It is something that should be earlier, to avoid searching for free space after you have a fully developed house.
9). A Hidden Safe Compartment
A safe is a must-have feature if you plan on keeping cash and expensive jewelry inside your home. However, a standalone safe can still be visible to prying eyes and can easily be carried away by thieves. To avoid such thefts from happening, go for a safe that can embed into s secret space, you asked your contractor to develop beforehand. Not only will this safe be fireproof, but it will also be hidden from any prying eyes trying to steal from you.
10). Backwater Valves
Backwater valves ensure that sewer water does not get back up through your houseâs drain pipes and pooling inside your basement or garage. It can be easy to install while your home is in construction, but a difficult thing to do afterward.
Final Words
There are many other features other than the ones mentioned above that you can include inside your house while it is in its development stages. However, there have been many times where people have forgotten about them, and they realized it when it was too late.

How to Get Through Winter With a Prosthetic Leg
Winter means cold weather, snow, and ice. As much as you may look forward to winter for the holiday season, the weather during this time is less than ideal for amputees, making it hard for them to get around. Using a prosthetic leg in slippery conditions can be downright dangerous. Fortunately, there are a couple of things that you can do to make sure that your prosthetic leg functions at its best â even if weather conditions are brutal. Proper care can make all the difference, so here are some tips for keeping your prosthetic comfortable during the cold weather:
 Add Traction to Your Footwear
Just like you would choose tires that wonât skid on the ice, you will want to invest in some good high-traction footwear. Rubber soles and snowshoes will be your best bet. Look into winter boots or even cleats for better traction. If you are in an area that involves harsh winters, you should take a look at gel liners for your prosthetics, which are highly recommended by therapists. Not only will they insulate your prosthetic and allow you to stay warm, but they will also improve overall mobility. Amputees often have a hard time walking through snow due to the texture and the uneven ground. It is not recommended to walk on icy sidewalks or snowy roads. This is why extra traction will be needed as an extra layer of safety.
 Stay Warm During Cold Season
Wind, cold temperatures, and moisture can build up pain if precautions arenât taken. You want to wear your prosthesis anytime you leave the house and go into cold conditions. Itâs crucial to keep your body warm and insulated in this kind of weather, which means that you should wear multiple layers, waterproof clothing, wool or fleece, and proper footwear. Exposing yourself to the cold is painful and can cause sickness, so bundle up! Keeping your whole body warm will also decrease stiffness in the other parts of your body, making it easier to move around.
 Be Careful When Walking
Itâs important to walk slowly and be careful while you are navigating through snow and ice. There are so many falling hazards in these weather conditions. Do not try to run or hurry through this weather, and take it easy by being steady. Another option for amputees is to use a walker, a cane, or a pair of crutches for slippery surfaces. You want a walker that has grips on the bottoms of it so that you can minimize your risk of slipping. Another reason to use a walker is that it will prevent nerve or joint pain. Walkers can be terrific tools to help you get through the winter.
Find Out What Specialized Prosthetic Technology is Available
There are tons of new advances in technology for amputees in order to make sure that they are comfortable and safe throughout all conditions, especially the winter. There are now prosthetics with heat regulation and bionic ankles that bend. There are only a few options of what is available, but prosthetics should be made for amputees to be able to do the bare minimum, which can be hard during winter. This is why there is always new technology targeted toward amputees in order to make it easier for them. When the winter time comes around, this is when amputees will need it most.

The best women's rain boots you can buy
The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.
The Insider Pick:
Rain boots don't have to be ugly. For all-weather durability, a reasonable price point, well-designed construction, and a comfortable fit, you canât beat the cute Sperry Top-Sider Saltwater Rope Emboss Neoprene Rain Boots.Â
Chances are, youâve likely been caught in rainy situations where you werenât equipped with proper footwear. It is why rain boots are an essential part of your shoe closet. They may not be the kinds of shoes youâll need to wear every day (or, at least, weâre hoping they wonât need to be), but itâs ideal to be prepared with a solid pair for when unsavory wet weather hits.
There are a plethora of rugged, workwear-style rain boots on the market that may be better suited for the likes of outdoor workers or those who live in, say, tropical storm-prone areas. But for the purposes of this particular shopping guide, we're focusing on rain boots for the everyday woman. For instance, the following water-resistant shoes are great if you need to get from home to the office or run an errand around town, but they may not be ideal if you need to sludge through knee-deep mud or cross shallow rivers. Consider the specific purposes your rain boots need to serve before deciding on a pair to buy.
In general, rain boots are tricky to review and there are no âperfectâ styles. Rain boots are inherently uncomfortable, given their non-breathable materials â your feet will inevitably sweat if you have them on for too long, or they will feel damp if your socks happen to get wet. Some styles include a thick insulating lining or lambswool insoles, which may require you to size up if things feel tight. There are also styles that donât include any lining, which means you will have to figure out how thick you plan to wear your socks, which will also determine the sizing of your shoe. Some styles look more chicly versatile, others are more practical. All this is to say, you need to figure out your personal preferences and how you plan to wear your boots before you buy a pair.
If attractiveness is a top priority and you reside in a climate where you need to ward off only the occasional light showers, there are stylish booties and sneakers with waterproof uppers that may satisfy your needs, without going the full-on ârubber bootâ route. Look for styles that call themselves âwaterproof,â such as Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Waterproof Nubuck sneakers ($120, at Nike) or Blondoâs Liam Waterproof Suede Bootie ($129.90, at Nordstrom).
But for those of you who are looking for something more functional and substantial made with sturdier materials, there is sure to be a pair that speaks to you in this guide ahead.
Read on in the slides below to learn why the Sperry Top-Sider Saltwater Rope Emboss Neoprene Rain Boots are our favorites and to find out why you should also consider the Native AP Rain Boots, the Sam Edelman Tinsley rain Boots, the Hunter Original Tall Rain Boots, and the Timberland Womenâs Nellie Lace Up Utility Waterproof Boots.
The best rain boots overall
Sperry
Why you'll love them:Â The Sperry Top-Sider Saltwater Rain Boots are durable after years of wear, well-designed for rain, and work effortlessly into the winter months.
I speak from personal experience when I say that Sperry makes great rain boots â Iâve been wearing my pair for almost five years now, and they still keep my feet perfectly dry in the rain.
Youâll see that this âduck shoeâ design from other brands like L.L. Bean and Sorel, and each company offers something slightly different from Sperry. For instance, L.L. Bean offers a resole program, and Sorel's boots have better traction if you plan to go hiking. But Sperry's boots have the advantage of an affordable price in the $100-$120 range, and these Saltwaters canât be beat if youâre in need of a simple shoe that keeps your feet dry as you go around town.
The boots come in a wider width, which is good for those of you who have wider feet, but it's important to note that some buyers with narrower feet sized down to get a better fit. Sperry's boots also have a micro-fleece lining for a layer of warmth, a cute and handy side zipper for quicker wear and removal, and a âwavyâ outsole design that Sperry says is ideal for âultimate wet/dry traction.â
For snowy days, a decent six-inch shaft is great for walking through snowstorms with confidence. But for me personally, I love a boot that looks just as stylish as it is practical in unpredictable weather. The hardest part will likely be deciding which color to get.
Pros: Comfortable, durable for snow, many color options
Cons: People with narrower feet may find these too big
Buy the Sperry Top-Sider Saltwater Rope Emboss Neoprene Rain Boots from Sperry for $99.95
Buy the Sperry Top-Sider Saltwater Rope Emboss Neoprene Rain Boots on Amazon for $45 to $198 (Prices vary by size and style)Â
The best lightweight rain boots
Native
Why you'll love them:Â While other rain boots will feel heavy on your feet, Nativeâs AP Rain shoes repel rain just as well while weighing only 11 ounces.Â
If ethical shopping is a priority for you, Native is a brand to watch. The company does not use any animal products in its collections, which is good news considering how materials like leather and sheepskin are prevalent in many high-end boots.
The AP Rain shoe is constructed out of a waterproof, dual-density EVA (Ethylene-vinyl acetate) upper, which is the same kind of dense material that is used for the soles of athletic sneakers. It makes this rain boot both sufficiently shock absorbent and slightly bouncy, while keeping the weight down.
The insole of the shoe is rather bare bones and donât offer much in terms of support, but itâs nothing that inserts canât fix if you need extra support. The outsole is constructed out of standard rubber that's fairly durable.
The style is Chelsea bootie-meets-running sneaker, making the AP Rain boots one of the most versatile styles Iâve encountered. You could easily wear these boots with cuffed-up jeans or with a dress and still look polished with an effortless, athleisure vibe.
Elastic side panels make them easy to slip on and off. I particularly love the not-too-high ankle silhouette, which is perfect for basic rainfall. These shoes do the trick of looking fab and keeping your feet dry. Just don't try puddle jumping or walking in the snow with them.
Pros: Extremely light, ethically-made, stylish
Cons: Offers limited support
Buy the Native AP Rain boots at Zappos for $80
The best rain boots under $50
Sam Edelman
Why you'll love them:Â With a chic design and low price point, the Sam Edelman Tinsley rain boots are a favorite among fashionable women because they look like an ankle bootie.
If youâre looking for a pair of stylish rain boots that wonât break the bank, Sam Edelman's Tinsley rain boots will do the trick. Given that Sam Edelman is a purveyor of trend-forward apparel and accessories, the Tinsley is likely to be one of the chicer and more aesthetically-pleasing types of rain boots youâll come across.
With its Chelsea boot-inspired silhouette and monochromatic all-black color, the Tinsley is ideal if looks and pricing are top priority factors. After all, we know that rain boots arenât the sexiest kinds of shoes to wear.
Like many ankle boots, the Tinsley have stretchy elastic side panels and a pull-on back tab. These boots have a cute, one-and-a-half-inch low heel and a rather impressive five-inch shaft, which makes this a capable boot in the likes of shallow slush.
But be aware: Buyer reviews most complained about the sizing of the Tinsley. Since there are no half sizes available and the shoe runs on the narrow side, those with wider feet found this shoe uncomfortable. If youâre considering this style, you may want to order both up and down in two sizes if youâre somewhere in-between, and return the one that doesnât work.
Also consider the thickness of your socks or inserts you might want to include, which may ensure a better overall fit.
Pros: Stylish silhouette, comes in both glossy or matte finish
Cons: Customers with wider widths found this style too narrow, no half sizes available
Buy the Sam Edelman Tinsley rain boots at Zappos for $44.99

What to Do on Corner Kicks in Indoor Soccer
While you are taking a nook kick in indoor football, you have some alternatives regarding what you could do and what the relaxation of the games in your team can do. What making a decision depends on numerous elements that Iâm able to outline in this newsletter!
The primary aspect you need to consider is that you do not have a good deal area to run up and kick the ball from since it is probably situated so near the forums. Which means you can not kick the ball with lots strength, so you want to depend on finesse and placement.
One of the maximum common things to do on a nook kick is to kick the ball instantly along the boards in the direction of the opponents aim. Your teammates must be in particular positions when you try this. One teammate has to be proper up subsequent to the goalie, screening them and preventing them from getting to the ball because it goes into the container. Every other teammate ought to be right on the far publish of the goal, to faucet the ball in if it squirts through the field â and it often will. Subsequently, a teammate needs to be on the pinnacle of the box, so if the defenders try to clean the ball, your teammate can intercept and take a shot.
Some other sort of nook kick is to hit the ball lower back to one in every of your defenders whoâs near the midfield line
That is effective for some reasons. Initially, it opens up the complete field to you. Your defender can hit the ball to both facets of the sphere, rather than just into the center, like Whilst you are taking a corner kick. Additionally, on a hook kick, the opposing defenders are usually all of their container, or near it. Which means that your defenders are unmarked, and they are able to take the ball and perhaps even take a shot. Subsequently, it throws the opposing protection into disarray, because they do not know who ought to mark your defender.
Some other approach is to kick the ball as difficult as you could into the middle of their container. This relies on both your teammates or their team deflecting the ball into the purpose. That is used a whole lot extra in more youthful leagues, however, it could marvel the opposite team and lead to a goal even in greater mature leagues.
Because you now know what to do on nook kicks in indoor football, you have to try the strategies out! Go out and play a recreation and take a look at them out â they may even bring about an intention or for you!

Cultured Kanazawa with tea houses galore, Kenrukoen Garden and a nice castle, chased up with a trip to snowy Shirakawa-go
We immediately liked the look of Kanazawa on arrival - nice and compact with easy buses everywhere to all the attractions. We spent our first day exploring the Chaya districts where the town looks more oldy worldy and there are plenty of original tea houses to visit. Joanna Lumley had taught us that in Japan, when you visit somewhere of significance, it's often the case that you can get a stamp for a memory book. So far we'd either failed to remember or the attraction didn't have a stamp option (could only get a hand drawn good will message) but, we managed to get our first one from a tea house visit in Kanazawa đ! Plenty of Japanese people were dressed in kimonos here and so Zee and I spent some time trying to sneak photos of them. We had a cuppa and unusual dessert at a local tea house sat cross legged on the floor around a little table with the pretty garden in view through the window/door - we felt like right locals đ. Got some local curry tucker from the next chaya district before the weather turned on us a bit so we decided to do a bit of shopping and head back to chill in the hostel with a film (slumdog millionaire) and reminisced about all the things we'd seen there that were in the film. Weather had really perked up for us the next day so we went around the beautiful Kenrokuen garden and Kanazawa castle. The garden is rated in the top three gardens in Japan apparently :) It was really lovely and the blossom had started to come out. We took part in a traditional casual tea ceremony too and I think I've decided that when I get a house I'd love to decorate some aspect of it in the style of a Japanese tea house. The castle and its grounds were also beaut and plenty to see and stroll around. Zee burned off some energy challenging me to step jumping contests - he beat me âšď¸. Next day we had booked on a coach tour that would take us to the traditional village, Shirakawa-go. It is one of a few towns left that still have original thatched roofed houses that are triangle shaped and have their sloping roofs at a 60 degree angle in order to cope with the snow fall they get. We were all very excited to see and play in the snow, just wish my choice of footwear had been more appropriate as was wearing my slip on pumps. I was close to losing them in the deep snow many times as your legs would disappear into it! We walked around the town, up to the view point, into the forest and across the suspension bridge stopping off for sustenance and warmth at a great cafe where the little old couple running it had lived there all their lives. Got the coach back to Kanazawa late afternoon and went in search of a sushi restaurant we'd been recommended as being the best sushi in town and a favourite of the locals - we were told we had to try the most expensive 'fatty tuna' as was very succulent, which it was! I'm trying to get better at sushi and fish eating and am not doing too badly - I had the raw fatty tuna and miso soup which had whole fish carcasses in!! I tried a bit of laura and Zee's who had a selection of proper fishy ones but couldn't have had a whole selection myself...it's just too fishy!!

Blisters, the bane of every hikerâs existence, are caused by three factors: friction, moisture and heat. When youâre trekking long distances, youâre going to work up a sweat. Your temperature will go up, and naturally, there will be pressure and friction from both your boots and from going up and down the trail.
But, these inevitable factors donât mean you have to surrender to blisters. If you take the steps to keep your feet as cool, dry and friction-free as possible, then you can hopefully escape your next adventure without shredding them to pieces.
With that in mind, letâs take a look at all of our top 10 tips for staying blister-free on your next hike.
How do you prevent blisters when hiking?
1. Choose boots that suit your feet
This tip sounds like a no-brainer, but the main offender when it comes to blisters is wearing shoes or boots that donât fit properly.
You could have a pair of the most expensive and high-tech boots on the market, but if theyâre too narrow, or too small youâll probably end up with a bunch of angry red blisters. When choosing footwear, keep in mind the conditions youâll use them in, the fit of the boots, the breathability of the style, and how much support they offer. A boot thatâs great for weekend day hikes isnât going to hold up on rocky terrain such as the Larapinta Trail for example.
If youâre tossing up between a few models with different features, check out our footwear guide here which should hopefully put you in the right direction when it comes to getting the perfect fit.
Choose boots that cater to the needs of your feet, and the environment youâre hiking in.Â
2. Lace your boots up properly
When youâre putting on your boots, take the time to lace them up properly. Starting at the base of the laces, pull them firmly and work your way up so that they conform to your feet snugly all the way around.
The less friction there is, the lower the risk of getting a blister. Youâd be surprised just how much this step can make a difference, so donât rush! Your feet will also swell while you walk, so adjust your lacing as you need to.
A lot of trouble can be avoided if you lace your boots on properly.Â
3. Wear your boots in to mould them to your feet
We donât want to sound like a broken record, but it is a good idea to make sure you wear your hiking boots in before you take them for a proper spin on the trail. There are three steps that we recommend you take to wear in your shoes:
4. Wear them at home
When you first get your boots, itâs a good idea to go for a walk or have a shower before you put them on at home. This helps simulate the hot environment your feet will be in when you hike.
Then put on your hiking socks, and wear your boots around the house on clean surfaces. Walk up and down the stairs to test how they feel on an incline and decline, and do your best to mimic an uneven terrain. Take notes of any points where you might feel a pinch where a hotspot might form.
By testing them inside, youâll be able to return them if theyâre not the correct fit which will save you some strife in the long run. Once youâre confident theyâre comfortable, then you can take it to the next level.
Lace on your shoes while youâre at home to break them in.Â
5. Put them on for a walk
The next step is to take them for a test run outside. Whether itâs for running a few errands on the weekend or taking your dog for a walk, ensure you wear your hiking socks (more on that below) so youâll be able to get a better picture of how your boots hold up out of the comfort of your house as well.
6. Then go on a day hike
Once you know that theyâre A-OK, you can head on a day hike in your local area to really put them through their paces. If you put in the time to wear your boots in, youâll have a good chance of staying comfy and blister-free on a longer trek.
But, before you jump into that, there are a few more things you should consider.

7. Choose moisture-wicking socks
Whatever you do, take those value 5 pack cotton socks and shove them back into your drawer. Theyâre perfect for wearing on your days off, but theyâre not suitable for long distance hikes. What you need are , as they will wick moisture away from your feet. Less moisture means a reduced risk of blisters.
Your sock should come up past your boots so that the top of your boots donât rub on your ankle. So choose the height based on the shoe or boots you have. If youâre serious about comfort and blister prevention, then the combination of a liner sock and a for comfort without the extra bulk. Ensure that there are no bunches in the liner before you put the second pair over the top so that you donât create any friction points. Also check that your boots still fit properly with the additional socks youâve pulled on, especially when you first try them on.Â
Specialised hiking socks are an absolute must.Â
8. Tape any blister or hotspot prone areas
If youâve got delicate skin that is prone to blisters, then it might help to use sports tape on certain areas of your feet before your hike. Apply the tape to a clean and dry surface and that you smooth it down firmly so there are no wrinkles or bumps.
And when youâre actually out and about and you feel your feet getting warm â stop, and tape it while itâs hot! If you leave it too long, then the blister will probably rear its ugly head.
9. Take breaks to cool off your feet
Itâs not always best to keep calm and carry on. If you feel a hotspot forming or your feet are getting overheated, stop and take off your socks and boots.
This will give you the opportunity to reduce swelling, dry your feet, and to manage any problem areas. Itâs also a good time to refresh and refuel before you head off again. Just make sure that if youâre airing out your boots while you rest, that you do so out of direct sunlight. Leaving a pair of boots (especially ones with a full leather upper) in direct sunlight might make them shrink, which will cause even more friction.
By easing and treating hotspots, you can mitigate discomfort and potentially stop a blister from forming.

10. Use anti-chafing blister products
There are a few products that you can use before, or during a hike to help prevent and alleviate pain from blisters.
If the skin on your feet is susceptible to abrasions, then put on some anti-chafing balm, or vaseline if that works for you just on your problem areas before you lace your boots on. There are also foot powders available which will help to absorb moisture if thatâs a pain point for you.
How do you treat or care for blisters when hiking?
Keep a few things in your rucksack for blister management while youâre bushwalking in case you do get a blister. There are so many different things that you can bring depending on what works for you.
Youâll also have to balance what you take with how much space and weight you have free in your pack. You can get blister kits that come with everything you need, or you can customise your own. Hereâs a list of essentials to bring for blister treatment:
Spare pair of socks
Bandages
A tool to drain a blister
Lubricants
Sports tape
Blister patches so you can manage any problem areas.
What do I do if I get a blister?
If you do get a small blister, then donât try to pop it. Instead, dry the area, and apply a blister patch to prevent the âroofâ of the blister coming off.
If the blister is large and causing you a lot of pain, then you may have to drain it to prevent it popping on its own and getting infected.
Just make sure you sterilise the needle, dry and disinfect the area beforehand, and then wrap it in a clean bandage afterwards.
Keep the blister essentials that work for you in your rucksack.
Now grab your rucksack, lace up your boots and hit the trail!
If not taken care of properly, a tiny blister can blossom into a large, painful and stride-crippling sore thatâll make it hard to enjoy the views of your hike.
It can take a bit of trial and error to find the perfect blister prevention method that works for you. But once you find it, youâll be able to jump into that next adventure with confidence.
How do you keep your feet in great condition when you walk, hike or run? Let us know what your tips and tricks are.Â
