How did you find the confidence to put your work out into the community?
Iā€™ve been wanting to make my own fic for this community, since the inspiration from you and a bunch of other creators was influential on me. But Iā€™m worried it wonā€™t be well received,
I would love to join the peepaw multiverse, honestly, all of your stories are amazing and I believe my idea is a good one. But Iā€™m not sure how to execute it.
Any words of advice?
tbh as blase as it sounds; i do what i want.
my fics have always kind of been written for me by me exclusively, the only reason why i put them online is bc sometimes i think "hey someone might like that too!" there's a reason why i put "self-indulgence" in the tags a lot bc it really is, im literally just entertaining myself and invite anyone who's even vaguely interested to come and see too. sometimes people will come and flock together, sometimes not, and thats fine to me. i know i joke a lot about "oh i got a good grade in public approval" or something but honestly? im past that point; my writing is a well-loved hobby of mine and i don't need anyone's attention to find enjoyment in it.
so i guess it has to do a lot with yourself, yknow? im not really sure how to coach self-confidence LMAO if you like your idea, then go for it!! it's your idea!! only you know how your idea pans out. im literally just some guy on the internet sitting in a specific nook and playing with my blorbos as ppl occasionally say hello KJSBKJDBā€“
and again; the Peepaw Multiverse is pretty much open-source, it isnt some fancy club to be accepted in. if you got a peepaw, then they'll most likely fit into the PMV haha!! i honestly do not hold a monopoly over it ā€“ it's also not something that's super serious, it's basically just a bunch of ppl playing dolls bc its funny. sure, some faces might pop up way more than others but once you stop viewing everything as some grand popularity contest, things get a lot more enjoyable bc i can assure you, there will always be at least one person who will like your stuff. maybe they're quiet but they're there and i think thats kind of heartwarming. but i do encourage ppl to voice their joy over other people's creations bc then we can enjoy it together!!

Hello! I saw your post on asking ab ppl's opinions on the DSMP and had so many thoughts to share I actually went to my pc to write this, lol. Long ask incoming, sorry.
I started watching the DSMP in august of 2020, specifically right after the Techno vs. Dream duel. At this point in time, the Dream SMP tag had only like ten posts--not exaggerating, you would scroll and see the same few posts over and over again cause there was almost no fandom. I followed the series pretty much religiously all the way up to the prison break, where I then basically had to stop watching cause my life was falling apart (paying attention to streamers all day every day causes you to fail classes, who knew?)
So I guess I don't have a lot to say on the ending, other than it certainly was an ending. I think the crew did a good job with what they had, I liked the realization c!Tommy had towards c!Dream and what was once an innocent intention of server unity twisting into something else. I think using the nuke to blow everything up to start anew was a cop-out, but I also know (or at least feel like) the server itself was falling apart IRL and they had to bring it to a conclusion somehow. (Because of that, I knew the server wouldn't get a "season 2")
You mentioned how you liked it on a thematic level rather than emotional, and it really made me think about how my own interest manifested. I was certainly invested in these characters and their stories, but I only carried an emotional attachment to c!Tommy and c!Dream (and DreamXD, but only because I love deities in fiction).
I think, story-wise, the DSMP had many elements that hit hard, c!Tommy's abuse being one of them. During the prison arc, when c!Dream is being tortured constantly by c!Quackity, a large part of the fandom rooted for c!Q because c!Dream was an abuser and deserved the dehumanizing treatment. And boy do I have some opinions on that, lol. Because of the nature of the DSMP, I never thought of it as a teaching element, and your comment on that only being prevalent to children's media struck a chord--because, yeah, that makes sense. The target audience for the DSMP is a bit skewed, because it does take place in an all-ages video game, but the storyline and characters themselves would never get a G rating. I always considered the DSMP to be a bunch of people having fun exploring the different ways they can write a story/character, without any real end-game in mind. They did marvelous, too, in my opinion. I don't believe the DSMP was ever meant to be a literary marvel, or whatever the video-game equivalent is, so for a bunch of then-friends just throwing ideas at a wall and seeing what sticks with the fans, it did it's job.
People now, coming into the fandom for the first time, or looking in from the outside trying to analyze it, don't understand it, imo. It's not that the narrative can only be experienced at the time it was written, because no, you can watch and re-watch it thanks to VODS and recap channels. But so many people hear stories of it being a great time and a great story with great characters and then analyze it to put it on a pedestal only to see that its a piece of fiction with many flaws. Not understanding that the SMP wasn't created to be role-playing server, that never even crossed their minds. It was meant to be a place to have fun and explore a snapshot. That's not saying the cc's shouldn't have made the story in the first place, it's just highlighting how out of control the SMP got due to influencers' fame and fun writing. It was a product of its time because everyone was together, quarantined, exploring how far they could go in a virtual setting. Sorry, rambling a bit. I just think that a sensation like the DSMP can never be repeated on such a scale, and that feeling is why so many outsiders expect so much.
Hope this makes sense, haha. Sorry it's not juicy discourse, but thanks for listening anyway.
No its fine, thank you very much for telling me this!
I initially started watching I think right before the exile arc started but by the time I figured out how to best watch it and caught up with it, it had already been going for a few days, then I followed along with it for a while until I lost interest sometime after the big clingyduo v. Dream fight. Then in late 2022 I was at a local comic con and saw someone in a ghostbur cosplay and some people carrying around a big lmanberg flag and it just made me feel so nostalgic that I wanted to rewatch/finish it, and because I thought it would be fun I also made this sideblog to liveblog it. Im pretty sure dsmp was already over or at the very least getting close to the end by the time I did that, so it gave me a kind of distance that definitely affected my experience with the show.
Like, I think if I had kept up with it throughout (what i would consider to be) its decline and then had to witness that ending after all that, I would definitely feel more negatively about it, so I understand why it was upsetting for a lot of fans, but as it stands, I can mostly just remember it as an overall good piece of media that started stumbling towards the last quarter or so and then ended in a way thats fine, although not particularly satisfying on an emotional level. Like, Dream and Tommy's whole storyline was essentially about the cyclical nature of violence and I think ending the cycle is the best way to resolve that kind of story and in theory, having them make amends before they both die together sounds good to me, but idk, in practice I just didnt like it lol. I think its mainly because their attempts to make Dream seem more sympathetic were kinda too little-too late; Dream didnt have his own pov when most people did which automatically dehumanized him in the eyes of the audience, which was brilliant for the manipulative and unpredictable villian character that he was, but I feel like the CCs didnt really realize that that was the case and didnt feel the need to show stuff from his pov, when it was actually vital imo
You said that people coming into the fandom now come into it with these expectations and I think thats true, but I feel like people who have been following it since the rp properly started also tended to put it on a pedastal because of how genuinely impressively good it was in the beginning, and then when the finale was Like That, a lot of them were insanely disappointed. I also think thats where a lot of the discourse revolving around the ending sending a bad message comes from ā€” a lot of people think of it as something very polished like an actual tv-show when thats simply not what it is or ever was. Its just people fucking around and having fun, and when people just fuck around, theyre not really thinking about "being responsible to their audience" or whatever. Take it from me as a writer lol, I have plans for ya-novels that touch on serious topics and with those I do try to be mindful of the fact that my audience is younger (although teenagers are obviously not children and already dont need to be taught via their media anymore imo), but when Im just writing a little short story I'll usually make it as fucked up as possible just because thats fun to me, yknow

Hello!! I love love love your arts. I feel like a lot of them have a sense of 'movement' which contrasts a lot of very polished artworks.
I love works with meticulously planned composition, layers, highlights, etc. I love works with a certain kind of loose yet purposeful application of value and colors. (The Two Cakes thing in the fandom). And I noticed that your arts belong to the latter category which I can rarely find!
If you don't mind me asking, do you have any artists or artworks that you're heavily inspired from? Do you draw on a pen-tablet, IPad, or other media? What application are you using? I feel like three questions are already too much for one ask so you don't need to answer them if you don't want to. I enjoy scrolling through your blog either way!
Hiiiiiiiiii dear anon!!! thank you soo much for sending this message! it made my day šŸ§”šŸ§”šŸ§” Loose but thoughtful art is what im striving for so its really make me happy to hear that i have some success in that Answering your question i draw using some cheap old model of genius pen-tablet. Bought it 10 years ago as my first device. Still running. Heard a lot of shitty comments about quality of genius tablets at that time, but even more only about Wacom in recent years i think (fuck them. Wtf with pen's tips that are constanty erasing. For who this product is made for. Ew). as for the apps, i use clip paint studio, for studies - heavypaint (great thing). There are AMAZING artists on tumblr who inspire me heavily with their works. like. i follow ~400 ppl here. because i like to stare at art. so. im gonna talk about my favorites! @crowthis - king. queen. i dont know the pronounces sorry. they draw magnificent things i love their style SO much, its such an inspiration. sometimes i just visit their blog to go through art tag and experience all that beauty. (half of their wrks i have downloaded on my desktop) It's loose, quite 'chaotic', but SO atmospheric. The mood, composition, texture, everything. Themes. I like black and white drawings as much as the ones with colours, it so bright and blatant\bold in a way, but it works perfectly, it gives your the right sense of the work. Even tho usually i prefer more calm colours, it makes me go 'wow!' And their works looks really simple and intuitive but as an artist you know that haha no its fcking hard to do things like that. it takes skill and knowledge. loose work is tricky
@frozensoba - idk how much time i could stare at their recent fish drawings like jesus christ. i wish i could do that. i want to be able to do that. my ass is ready to work every time i see it and drawings like these really inspire me to draw simple things and non-humans bc i feel like you can draw beautifully everything that exists. you just need to know how. Colours, texture, rhytm, lines... everything on its place. I love colours especially. Its very gentle kind of harmony going on there, and the palette is huge, intricate.
@nerdyhideoutphilosopher-2 - going crazy over their works. honesty dont know what to say. go look and see. unique voice Artists id like to mention as well: @dynasoar5 - i mean. just go and look at that. i love how loose and messy kind of rendering is but it looks amazing. and overall. simply amazing drawings fuck yes @jadenvargen - just go and look at his works. i see no point in talking. simply beautiful. looks easy but also hard as fuck. the colours are so bright and rich and very bold but somehow everything is right on its place. it leads you where it should. just wow. the skill i respect @snippit-crickit - once again. beautiful. i really love their studies and how they render things, the colours. @sen-art-acc - LINE WORK. LINE WORK. go check it out. LINE WORK!!!! and i simply like how tidy and clean the drawings look like with colours. i cant do stuff like this. i have zero patience to be this accurate and precise. Also if you love loose artwork i should recommend you those artists for sure @shican, @dude-standin i love as well @wuntrum and @cordspaghetti works a lot. I followed both of them because mcr fanart i guess? tho never was into mcr and stayed for the drawings alone Also, if we're speaking about more "pro" (dont like this term either, forgive me) kind of artists i have some huge inspirations as well (tho my art not in any way reminds of them im afraid lmao. but i hope maybe in ten or ok 30 years or more ill be somewhere). There are a ton of artists i like, but its for another post i guess. To much talk. So here we go Sergio Toppi - he's an amazing at working with lines and composition. I have his comic books on my bookshelf. I open it everytime i want to get energy to draw. You cant look at his drawings and NOT to get inspired. He's incredible. The rhytm, the shapes... damn. i can look at his drawings for hours. And he was the main inspiration to work with lines and composition more, to play with it more. I dont have a lot of line-work on this acc (last quiobi drawing, some year\two-old dghda drawings, eugene one) but i actually exercise it a lot. Lines are extremely powerful tool. And as for composition... The shapes, negative spaces, love it. And he's extremely good at working with colour too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Francis Vallejo - he's illustrations are so good... he's incredible with composition and rhytm his drawings have. Negative spaces, one again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anders Zorn - i adore his black and white graphic drawings. Angles, framing, line work. Spent a lot of time looking at his works. Cant get enough of it. The way he draws people, the plot, themes. What he chooses to portray, the way people look, what they do. There is such a special mood to his drawings, there is something extremely psychological about it, isn't there? he's a master im mesmerized by
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bernie Fuchs - composition, rhytm, once again. I love it when you want to look at something for more then 2 seconds, because the rhytm of the drawings leads you into different places and opens its plot in parts. No matter where you look u'll find something interesting and even though there is lot of going on its still not a mess and looks and feels fucking awesome. And i love his colour palettes too. He's very good at setting the mood (check out his less commercial works)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the colour here's a few i love. (Though they're still extremely good with everything else)
Hovsep Pushman - the man is a mystery. His work with colours, light and texture is beyond me. Also it has disco elysium vibe to it. I dream of being capable of something like this when im sixty or so (im not gonna be)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mead Schaeffer - simple but powerful. Looking at his works like eating a tasty ice cream.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
same goes to Dean Cornwell - though its a bit more complex, his composing. You need to pay more attention
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd like to mention one other artist - Jamie Wyeth. his works are something else entirely, i dream of drawing like this one day. Loosiness, themes, mood. Ill probably cry if i see those ones in real life one day, somehow special to my heart, relates
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He has these series - "Seven deadly sins". Ive been in love for some time
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the inspiration drawings on itself - thinking about it im coming back to dragon age tarot cards. Not all of them, but i still go 'jesus i want to draw like this' at some, through years. This one especially.
Tumblr media
Soooo Thats it i guess! I mean. I love to talk and talk about art especially. I probably could write ten more posts like this no problem. I actually heavily into landscape painters since... Well. Nature. Ice, oceans, sky. I sadly havent really tried to get into the genre myself, i do not draw lots of backgrounds as you can see. Should work on this probably, life's short. But im always happy to share my fav artists! So hit me up whenever. dm or send an ask! And a beautiful work for the ending

2: A creation that came out completely different to what you had first pictured in your mind
hmmm i actually think my sam wilson + legacy set kind of took a left turn as i was looking through the eps for clips to use lol, i hadn't totally planned it out so it was a bit of flying by the seat of my pants and a LOT of trial and error šŸ˜…
7: What is something you want to develop in your future creations?
i really want to explore blending gifs more, especially full-size gifs over full-size gifs! some of my fave creators manage to find and highlight (or even sometimes create) these really beautiful subtleties and i would love to be able to do that someday. also typography! i have to fight my brain with typography stuff and i would love to learn enough to get past that blockage and do it well
15: Talk about some of your favourite creators: what do you love most about their creations?
oh hey!!! this fits perfectly with my last answer lol
okay so i'm obsessed w these folks' creations:
@jackarthurdavenport - elle, a QUEEN of blending, not to mention gorgeous coloring & typography!!! her sets are so beautiful & creative and i adore everything she makes omg. itā€™s ALL quality
@niinazenik - phe is SO talented omg the COLORS the CLARITY the FONT CHOICES goddd everything she makes is so stunning!! seriously every creation i see is just... i wanna make stuff like that
@seance - omg every graphic is BREATHTAKING. from blending to fonts to shapes to colors to sheer creative force. it would take me a whole lot of years to reach that point & iā€™m always in awe
and then LIGHTNING ROUND bc i could go on for days about every single creator i love:
@inejz-ghafa @anya-chalotra @merlinsprat @luke-patterson for blending + typography + colors + creativity!! @steveroger @darksber @mandah-lorian @trashcora @erikillmonger @favreaus @roseapothecary for colors + clarity + creativity & more!!
i follow SO many amazing creators (yourself included šŸ’›šŸ’›), though, those are just the ones that happened to pop in to my head first! i encourage ANYONE who wants more creators to follow to check out my blogroll, because itā€™s full of them!

The buzzing from your phone invades your dreams until you fuzzily become more conscious. You realized half awake that bees do not vibrate, and therefore your phone -- YOUR PHONE! It's ringing!
You pick up not looking at the time or contact who's called you, "Hello?!"
"Ahh~, you finally picked up. I thought you were ignoring me."
Your voice still thick with sluggishness tries to laugh it off. "Sorry, I was dozing off."
"Eh, you must go to bed pretty early huh? I said I would call, didn't I? Here I thought you valued my time and would wait up for me."
You frown and hold the phone to your ear. "You know I do, Totty. More than anything."
"Then next time pick up on the second ring, okay?" Todomatsu's tone feels lighthearted like a suggestion but his words are more than a command. You feel angry, mostly at him and only a little at yourself for being a teensy - not a lot - bit turned on by him.
After a few seconds of silence Todomatsu charmingly asks in a low voice, "Hm? What's wrong, Y/N-chan? Cat got your tongue?"
The confidence in his voice sends shivers down your spine once more. When you open your mouth to speak you croak softly. You hear Todomatsu laugh at this, "I'm sorry, it's more like a frog in your throat then?"
"You sound so goodā€¦ " You breathed out the words, not intending for him to hear them. This is between you and Akatsuka-sensei.
"Is that so?" Todomatsu asks and you feel the color drain from your face. "I think your voice is so much better though, I could listen to you all night." Of course with those words your face is back on fire and you want to scream for joy.
You suck in a breath subtly trying not to squeal when Todomatsu asks, "When am I going to see you again?"
"Soon, I promise." Truth be told you want to see this devil as soon as possible but you don't want to seem desperate nor do you have the funds to waste. Rents coming up soon after all.
"How soon?" You scratch your head at this question from Todomatsu, "Umm, after finals?" That should definitely be after rents due! You'll even set aside some money to play around with, you'll call it your Totty budget!
"Aren't finals next week, that's too long from now." Todomatsu's voice sounds strained, "I need to see you sooner than that." The urgency and slight desperation in his voice has your heart twisting excitedly.
You hope to God that his manipulation will always be this sweet.
You giggle oh so nervously and say, "How could I say no to that?"
"I can't have you forgetting about me and getting a boyfriend from school after all."
You want to tell him about the guy you turned down, but instead you deny the possibility of seeing someone else. "I won't!" You cut in with finality.
Todomatsu laughs almost out of breath and you realize how it sounds like he might be walking somewhere.
"So, what were you doing before you fell asleep? Were you waiting for your prince, my sleeping beauty?"
Todomatsu is just too cute!! You're going to kill him, or least take a bite out of his arm to see if he tastes as sugary sweet as his words are.
"I'm studying, or at least was."
"Am I distracting you?" Todomatsu teasingly asks, and your head spins out of control.
Before you could properly articulate yourself your gums are flapping, "Nono! I wanted to talk to you!"
Todomatsu laughs lightly, "Wanted to talk to me, huh? You fell asleep though, Y/N-chan." Todomatsu's still teasing you and you in turn pay attention to every syllable. The way his voice is lower, the way he stresses out each word, the light hoarseness when he spoke, none of it escaped your perception.
You canā€™t help to stutter out your question, hoping just in your heart that your affections are returned. "Wh-what about youā€¦?" Todomatsu hums out, "What do you mean, Y/N-chan?" You're going to fucking scream!
"D-did you...want to talk to me...on the phone too?" Your eyes are clamped shut and your face is alight with shame and embarrassment. How can somebody as cringy as you get with Todomatsu? You have no shot!
"Yeah I did, you have a nice voice. Plus I wouldn't have given you my number if I didn't."
You sigh in relief, "You're kind of dense, huh?" Todomatsu speaks under his breath.
"I like you, Y/N-chan." You actually gasp and drop your phone. Knowing you wouldn't be directly in Todomatsuā€™s ear you flap and kick while squealing. Sure you just got a confession a few weeks ago, one you never gave a real answer to, but Todomatsu's admission has your heart soaring high.
You can hear Todomatsu laughing from the receiver of your phone, then it crackles with his voice when he begins to speak again.
"If you like me back that much then let's meet up somewhere right now?"

Hello!!! Really quick want to say how much I adore your writing!!! Also, I have had a question since reading why and how you ship Breach and Sova!! What are the chances for sometime in the future for them to become as close to a thing as nanobomb? From what I seen riot likes to listen to the fans but then also riot doesn't put voice lines like that for fun. Specially with breach being a flirt (I know he doesn't do it only to sova. There is phoenix reyna and viper maybe???) Also Breach and sova started on completely different ends than Killjoy and Raze (I think), and from what I am see is that Sage and Sova are more in the foreground to even become something romantic in the future. (From that line by sova. I'm not sure about sage) The idea of character development between the two could happen I can see it, but realistically speaking what are the chances? I know it is probably soon still to say anything but I think its interesting to think about!! Sorry my first language isn't english thank you for your work!!!!!
!!! First, tyty for the kind words!! Also, had you not mentioned it, I wouldn't have questioned your English LOL. I have friends born and raised in Canada with worse English than that :p
I respond to the Sage/Sova stuff first, since you brought it up, but to answer your question kinda directly, no. I don't think Breach/Sova will ever be as close to canon as nanobomb is. The essay as to why I think this will continue to be fan-sided is under the keep reading lol. Once again just reminding ppl I don't work for Riot so like, there's every chance they do something I didn't see coming.
But my thoughts on Sage/Sova stuff is kinda where I'm at for most other ships in the sense that I don't think there will be another ship hinted at until we get at least another year into Valorant's lifespan, and when we do, my guess is that it has something to do with Phoneix. Whether its with Yoru or Jett, I don't know but his character's in the spotlight as one of the originals, and most used in cinematics and stuff.
Breach/Sova is a ship that has some basis in how relationships can start and develop. However, despite the lines and the foundation that you mention as well in the voice lines, I would say that it will never get as cannon as nanobomb. This is because of three main points, namely, it's not popular enough among fans, I don't think too many "canon" ships are good for a fandom, and their creative vision.
So you mentioned that Riot does listen to fans, which is correct to some extent. For nerfs/buffs/skin lines and battlepass stuff, they will listen to fans for sure (lore stuff is a little touch and go bc it's a diff team and they already have a vision, which I'll go into later). But there are simply not enough fans behind Breach/Sova. Sage, Viper, Omen, and Cypher with Sova all have more numbers behind them, so if, say a popularity vote happened with the team planning to follow them and implement a new ship, then Breach/Sova wouldn't even be on the ballot. I think you can count the number of Breach/Sova content creators on just your fingers - maybe just the ones on one hand... if you look at that tag on AO3 a lot of it is me and a user called forresearchpurposes. By word count, it's mostly me. In terms of art, which reaches more people to start with, I've seen three regular artists who draw the ship: ninadrawsstuff, nomegusta, and moth. I saw cameos of it here and there but it was not the main focus, and people don't really notice it lol. Unless Riot already has the long game plan to push Sova and Breach together on the road from rivals to lovers, they won't be influenced to do so by fans. (unless my writing is just that effective *hair flip*. jkjk, i know my limits)
To a certain extent, I don't think "confirming" ships is great for a fandom like Valorant. There is no end story. There will be arcs and there will be development, but Valorant is not an rpg or anything where the story will have an end and the game ends there. Nanobomb was great imo because it was the gay representation in a major game that a lot of people wanted, and I think it's cute and fun. They still won't 100% confirm it because by confirming a ship you take the fun out of the guessing of fans. By keeping all ships possible (despite the "no fraternization rule" which really should come up soon in relation to KJ and Raze if we want this to be cannon), you generate more interest. People feel more free to ship who they want rather than following one ship "because it's canon". Canon ships don't stop people from shipping characters with other ones, but it discourages it. The writers would know this just as well as anyone, so they will always spill hints here and there, but nothing will be confirmed, and they may change their minds.
Lastly, the writers, and Nottingham (idk if I got his name right or wrong) in particular have mentioned repeatedly that they have some sort of creative vision in place, and while its flexible depending on actual game development, they generally have an idea of where they want to go. And maybe it's gut feeling but the lead mentioned that he generally takes the story very seriously, and was against the dancing Brimstone gif at first. Do I agree w him on the seriousness, no. But I do understand where he's coming from. You have this vision that you're trying to convey, and it's being misconstrued or whatever. There's a lot to be said about publishing art of any form and thus releasing it to people's interpretation, but I'm sure they do want to support the no fraternization rule in canon even if the fandom treats it like it doesn't exist. But my gut feelings remains. They aren't thinking about how to make the next ship cannon. Characters will flirt, they will tease but nothing will come as close to nanobomb for some time.
So, that answer's kinda bleak, but I love the ship and I'll keep writing my enemies to lovers things, even if Sova gets put w someone else.
ALSO, if Riot makes me eat my words and ever makes tremorbolt canon or whatever version of canon that nanobomb is... idk I'll literally work for them for free for a couple weeks. 60 hours of straight writing, outline, screenplay, anything they want from me, I'll fly to their HQ to make them coffee idk.
But yeah, that's my answer. I hope it answers your question, and I'm sorry if it's not what you wanted to hear.

HELLO.
I just wanted to say that I love, love, love your tags on that character/tool post a lot! Some of my favorite shows/books involve characters that can't keep it together and just barely make it to the end of the story or make it there in an "inconvenient way" and tbh I find that usually the narratives that follow these characters don't really work away from them either--the narrative is just usually more questioning instead of fully formed.
Like, 'what if/how would', y'know? There's less of a clear meaning and more just 'what if they hadn't done that. what if they had done that. what if all that meant nothing. what if that struggle was all there was'.
But oh boy, when they DO work away from the narrative. *chefs kiss*
I mean, most of my favorite Bleach characters are narrative nightmares who either hinder or cut off lines of theme in the story entirely. And, in general, I think there are A LOT of characters in shonen--a genre known for very long narratives that can't possibly complete every thought but also can't just abandon all those characters introduced ESPECIALLY the fan favorites or personal favorites--work in the way you described.
Tbh i think your tags really highlight why so many ppl get drawn to these characters/why they're so fun to play with in fanfiction.
If you have more to add or more thoughts about this you want to lay down I am here, eagerly awaiting and ready to pick them up.
Also, who do you think in Bleach is the most fun characters who sort of drop kicked the story, in your opinion? Who's the one you like the most? And who's the one you dislike the most?
[For posterity the referenced post is this one.]
Aww, thank you! Thatā€™s really lovely to hear. I was anxious about even putting it in tags because I donā€™t think I presently have the capacity to explain it wellā€”and even if I did might still sound bananas to many. Or at least the bit about negotiating with characters and how *they* feel about being subjects in stories. Because as much as that really is my practice saying it out loud takes me back to likeā€¦ FFN in 2003 where every store was prefaced by extensive chat-form back-and-forths between the fic author and their character "musies" and that is not something I think fandom would benefit from bringing back in force, hahaha. But anyway.
Hereā€™s the part where I disappoint because I donā€™t think I actually know Bleach well enough to speak to it in this context. WHICH SOUNDS DUMB EVEN AS I TYPE IT BECAUSE LOL WTF IS THE NAME OF THIS BLOG WE ARE CHARLATANS AND POSERS FOR CLAIMING AS OUR NAMESAKE NOT ONE BLEACH BUT THREE BLEACHES but truly, my experience of Bleach has a shallow depth of field. I feel like I have weirdly intimate knowledge of some severe rabbit holes but a non-existent to uneasy sense of the gestalt.
Like idek man, in my "slow re-read where I am actually paying attention" Ichigo hasnā€™t even met Byakuya and Renji yet. ToT
I'm gonna put this behind a cut because it spidered all over the place, but in summary:
characters and their capacity to produce narrative failure
the charm of longform serialized series and their invitations to imagine stuff
me attempting to talk about Hitsugaya and feeling a fool, as usual
I guess in general terms, Iā€™m really interested in characters and their capacity to produce narrative failure. Not failure as in 'bad' but failure as in things that break form or are circuitous or are actively detrimental to a narrative arc. All my strongest examples of what Iā€™m thinking of are from a different fandom and therefore not relevant to this blog, alas. By comparison I think anyone in Bleach can keep it together better than the characters that are immediately coming to mind, lol. But I think this idea dovetails often with trauma narratives, or depression narratives, because these things are oftenā€¦ non-narrative? Like, thereā€™s no fourth or fifth for minor fall or major lift. Sometimes itā€™s the same thing over and over again, or maybe nothing. Maybe itā€™s the exact same self-sabotage narrative dictates could have been avoided. Maybe itā€™s some act that emanates forth but cannot be explained because it cannot be explained and will never be explained. Thatā€™s a version of what Iā€™m talking about, in any case, though not the only version.
Your note about longform shounen definitely resonates with me, too. In my mind I donā€™t like long things and I prefer series that are more self-contained but whenever I have ever landed in a long-term fandom, with a piece of media I felt obliged to carve out chunks of my life for, and to interact with at that level of creative fannishness, itā€™s always been something stupid long and serialized by the seat of its pants. I know plot holes or dropped threads bother a lot of people (makes total sense, donā€™t get me wrong) but I find these things incredibly attractive. I see them as invitations to join in the fun. Especially when itā€™s so much a part of the form and genre to have this, as you said, lack of real expectation that every thread will be followed to its conclusion (or that it would be worthwhile to do so) and every thought completed.
Thereā€™s this piece by David Grann that was published in The New Yorker in 2004 that I really love that speaks to part of this idea, albeit in terms of fictional universes versus fictional characters. But Grann is talking about Sherlock Holmes (Doyle original) and the ways that Sherlockians would like, approach apparent lapses in narrative and then solve them according to the established rules of the universe. I just love that. Thereā€™s also the line, "Never had so much been written by so many for so few," which LOL if that ainā€™t fandom I donā€™t know what is!!
I feel like Iā€™m actually talking about three distinct but related facets of these thoughts in this post, except all at once and without clear transition, uhhhhh.
Gah, I am broken and now can ONLY think of examples from my not-Bleach fandom, but to try a different tack and add yet another facet to this already funhouse-mirror post, my various attempts to write Hitsugaya often feel like they come up against a version of this. I think Hitsugaya has aggressive side character energy, and I find it difficult to make him the center of a story and have it feel right to me. He feels different to me than writing other minor characters, where they can be the center of their own stories even if their story is not the main story. Like, two of my fave characters in my other fandom have literally likeā€¦ three lines in 350+ episodes and it feels easier to imagine THEM at the center of their story and I think what it comes down to is that Hitsugaya probably prefers what he not be written. And when he does become more narrative I think heā€™d prefer that none of it was happening in the fist place. But at the same time he always seems to beā€¦around??? whether there is really a good reason for him to be present or not. XD So while, say, he and Bartleby "would prefer not to" (because THAT'S what this post needs, a Melville reference), Bartleby actually opts out and Hitsugaya out here volunteering.
He also often feels non-narrative to me because he feels very declarative, if that makes sense? Like, the coming-to-decisions or coming-to-realizations parts of existence happen pretty quick, or are approached perfunctorily. I feel like I find narrative in the "coming" part of that equation and instead Hitsugaya will be like, well, Iā€™ve already done that part without you, and/or plan to do that part in the future and it will still be without you, the audience. Anyway, hereā€™s the determination Iā€™ve made, hereā€™s what Iā€™m going to do, and here begins the long and probably tedious process of my doing that thing (off 2 go train in a cave for a bit). I donā€™t think he actually believes the world is that simple, Tab A into Slot B, but I do think heā€™s already made that assessment and can see coming to terms with that as a horizon, if that makes sense. So even if he doesnā€™t know the answer to something, or is completely at a loss of what to do (what to say to Hinamori? how to productively address the number Aizenā€™s done on him) thereā€™s still not necessarily a story there. Maybe the answer is you grind, and it is repetitive and boring. Maybe you just hold things. Thereā€™s not even the act of learning how to hold things, necessarily, just the practice of doing so.
Wow, that probably doesnā€™t sound good! I feel like I need to suffix this with the assurance that Hitsugaya is my absolute runaway character in the whole series and this was true 15 years ago and it is still true now (truer, even) and everything I just said are reasons why I love him.

i honestly don't mean to be rude but im kinda wondering why u stan so many white people and so few ppl of color
i know you didnā€™t mean to come off as rude but this does come off as rude. do you ask this to white people who in your opinion donā€™t stan poc? or do you only ask this to poc, like me, who you donā€™t feel stand enough poc for your liking? because up until veep came back from hiatus i was mainly posting about one day at a time, which is a show about poc. and hello? i was a superstore blog, a series which is led by my love, america ferrera, for a good two years too.
if you go to my blog /tagged/mi_gente, thereā€™s an entire tag of poc celebs that i care about, that as Latinos, are as the tag translates to, ā€œmy peopleā€
also to answer your question, not that it was any of your business to begin with, the white celebs i mainly care for (hugh laurie, jld) i stan because their work helped me through some of the lowest points of my life and i owe so many of my friends to them and the work that brought us together. not to mention some of the best days of my life so far involve experiences iā€™ve had with them. the reason you think i stan so little poc is because the poc i care about like eva longoria for example, arenā€™t doing work that has longevity so it doesnā€™t survive past a few episodes (RIP telenovela) or i have people like gina rodriguez who keeps shoving her foot in her mouth and saying stupid things, or the women of oitnb who once the show comes back all of Spanish Harlem from the show will be back all over this damn blog.
anyway please donā€™t come back to me with this again and instead of worrying about who poc are stanning go worry about white people stanning mainly white people

Fever, I have an important question to ask you. As much as I admire your art and your style and your active participation in the Zootopia fandom, why show an over excessive amount of pride? Like yes, we get it you "invented/founded" Spicy Nick Day but why be so narcissist about it? We see large blogs (larger than yourself) such as Trish or Rem but you don't see them bragging about their own achievements...or their ability to produce artwork, do you? I'm not against you I'm just curious. Thanks!
Oh, um.. 0///0 t-to answer your question, no I donā€™t see them doing that..
If youā€™re referring to how I carry myself in my blog descriptionā€¦there is a relevant reason behind everything I included, trust me, but I can see where youā€™re coming from- that all together it sounds like Iā€™m tooting my own horn. In all sincerity, my whole focus from the beginning was to try and sound like a real person at first glance. I didnā€™t want a short and choppy simple-sentence description like: ā€œZootopia/WildeHopps Artistā€ (period. description over.) Iā€™ll leave the basic information like that to my name, age, gender, and role (answers the essential questions in a snap) Also Iā€™m not exactly a ā€œHi!, Hey there friend!, or Hello! Iā€™m Emery! sort of person. Idk I feel like awkward doing a greeting that way. I didnā€™t exactly want my blog description to sound like a list either y'know with a bunch of commas and stuff //not that Iā€™m hating; itā€™s just not ā€˜meā€™// I like putting personality and thought into who I am and what I essentially do for any newcomers to understand from the get go. But apparently it gives off an egotistical vibe //nice going Emery -_- all your talk about putting ā€˜thoughtā€™ into what you wrote. Unbelievable// Anyway, I wrote ā€œI provide Zootopia, (as in movie related posts) WildeHopps, (as in ship related posts bc this is overall a shipping blog) and fanartā€ (as in mine and other artists fanart related to both ZTP and WH) all for those said reasons. I wanted viewers to know right away whatā€™s in store. Then I direct them to my art blog bc Iā€™m basically saying ā€œspecifically my artworks are more easily found here rather than through my #tags so yep. Easierā€ s'why I made that blog in the first place :/ Now I know I donā€™t have to credit my own icon, but I just thought ā€œwell thereā€™s a quick way for them to judge whether they like my art or nahā€ but I think I just might take that part out of my desc. since itā€™s obvious :P Once all my *core* or for lack of a better term, *main* blog purpose is addressed, I gave a little info on my *human* rep in the fandom, again, so Iā€™ll come out as a real person, crazy teen, an easy to talk to fangirl, blah blah blah, someone who will take questions and even embarrassing criticism into considerationā€¦ā€¦without actually me saying so like ā€œjust message/ask me about anything!ā€ Honestly, I canā€™t even be online and especially messaging all the time everyday so I left that out. Also I donā€™t like publicizing my social flaws unless I have to (hence this post) :P As for the ā€œ*Creator of Spicy Nick Day*ā€ part, honest! to! goodness! My soul, soul, soul purpose for adding that detail was so anyone who doesnā€™t know what that is or has questions could be directed to me, the person who would know the most about it. Seriously I only put that in my desc. to help- not to be narcissistic at all (which is why I gave that bit of info in *asterisks* rather than an egotistical emoji like ā€œCreator of Spicy Nick Day šŸ˜Žā€ or emoticon like ā€œCreator of Spicy Nick Day ;)ā€ I felt the asterisks were more professional. Not saying 'Ye I did that ;) šŸ˜Žā€™ (see how those symbols make all the difference? Ehh to me they do) Lastly my reason for writing ā€œAlso Iā€™m @arsonist14 if youā€™re into that sorta thingā€ was NOT originally a shameless plug, but more of another vital information bit. Allow me to explain, since FeverWildeHopps is my sideblog, ppl will get confused if this ā€œArsonist14ā€ person pops up in replies all the time answering questions only Fever would know. Y'know. And I didnā€™t want to write all that "btw arsonist14 is my main so if you see me in replies and stuff itā€™s me blah blah blah" so basically yeah I made it a shameless plug sorta. Um, so now that thatā€™s over my profound apologies for being prideful and irritating. I apologize in advance if I do it again. For shame, Emery *places brown bag over my head* *hides* Youā€™re a bold anon- thatā€™s good.
