Ngl I'm just beyond disappointed that anyone in that dev team thought cutting this was a good idea. Especially when we know they went out of their way to add in a someone who wasn't put in this game as a companion and wasn't intended to be one initially, while Ketheric was, even more so because of how half baked it was. I'm baffled and gutted that this was worth keeping to them, while Ketheric, who is far more plot significant, was not.

You can still play up to getting to persuade him which was where he was meant to join you and idk why the fuck they left that in then.

I didn't originally envision him that way, but I think it's a fun interpretation of the character. He definitely has a characteristically Russian way of speaking; gruff, curt, and direct, so that accent would fit! Either that or the vaguely eastern European accent Jaheira has lol

but im not really discouraged, dating has never been a high priority for me, like Ever. lmao. all my relationships were what i consider to be quite natural and not something i ever actively sought out. i only decided to try to try it out in a more deliberate manner bc i recently moved states and i work from home so its difficult to meet new people in any sort of capacity and i thought i might go a little crazy without some new human interaction

I feel like "do you feel an accomplishment after completing a task" discourse is going the way of so many, where people who claim not to feel this are deciding they're the perfect ones to explain how they believe it would feel and ascribing an exaggerated level of emotion that few people ever reach, which means that more people read those posts and decide they also must not feel Sense Of Accomplishment Emotion: The Ticker Tape Parade when in fact everyone involved does, it's just small and weak bc they don't nurture that feeling and instead as soon as they complete a task they wallow over their belief that they're chemically incapable of being happy for themselves

i'm learning russian and french at the same time and I swear to god if I accidentally find a random cyrillic letter in the middle of a word writen in latin alphabet one more time or accidentally mix languages mid sentence, I will yell

or sometimes I find that when I'm writing a translation of a word in russian that sounds similar in polish I just write the russian word again but in latin alphabet for some reason

or I can somehow remember all of my miniscule spanish when I'm trying to learn french even though I literally don't remember a word in spanish otherwise

my language module is broken at this point, if you ever find my notes and there is something like boнjour, just ignore it, I literally don't pick up on it when I'm making and rereading my notes

ANYWAY IT WAS SO STUPID but essentially, both my friend and i showed up late to class on tuesday (for separate reasons) , and there's two other people in the class who consistently show up late ALSO... and so i guess it really pissed off my teacher that day for 4+ ppl to be late??? esp since we were talking abt the reasons why, AND our class discussion ended up sucking (as usual tbh)...

but she sent out this really mean-spirited (other people thought so too) email after class titled "gentle reminders" that essentially was like: "i know we usually spend the first 15 minutes of class time talking (which my professor is a huge part of LOL), but it is ESSENTIAL for you to show up on time, after that period you will be counted absent, it's part of your participation grade" blah blah...

and like... idk. it just felt really demoralizing cuz FIRST OF ALL, she was glaring at us in class, and second of all, my friend was late because she attends AA at seven in the morning every day, another girl has soccer practice in the mornings AND has a sprained foot, and my bus only comes once every 30 minutes so if i miss it, i'm automatically late by extension...

I agree that jimwen being the most boring part of MLC is not an upopular opinion (literally anyone I talk to says the same and it's the same case for me) but here's a truly unpopular opinion in regards to jim saying that bullshit about being poor and gay to li ming: I don’t understand the shock and outrage in the fandom. Yes, it's an incredibly shitty thing to say but internalised homophobia exists and imo that line is completely in character for jim, I expected him to react in a similar fashion. He's always been bad at listening to li ming's feelings and desires (if those weren't in line with what HE wanted for li ming) and also the internalised homophobia signs were there since early on too (just rewatch the scene where he's finished talking about beam's cheating ass to wen and wen has to tell him that relationships fail all the time regardless of gender; jim's finishing line was literally "but this is what I think," indicating he knew wen was making sense but still thought his relationship with beam ended the way it did because it was a queer one). Imo what the show is doing is highlighting the difference between jim's generation and li ming's (or even wen's). But I think people keep forgetting jim is supposed to be almost 40 (and therefore, because of the time he grew up in, holds some antiquated/harmful beliefs) though, honestly, that's kind of the fault of the casting because who's going to believe earth is almost 40? My mans looks way younger than that 💀

yeah everything you're saying is so true, which is why I personally wasn't shocked at jim reacting negatively to li ming being queer, but more so the phrasing & how blunt it was in the preview and it led me to believe that it probably won't be as crazy in the actual show, but we shall see. it's so true that jim definitely has a lot of internalized homophobia & that is definitely a super interesting take to explore, though tbh it makes me sad to see jim & li ming have trouble connecting to one another again when they've just kinda buried the hatchet but anyways. but ultimately I think that generational difference that you talked about doesn't work bc it's really hard to see earth as a 40 years old, which I've talked about before, so when he talks I see a regular young dude who definitely should know better, instead of the character that's intended to be shown to us. I used to think they should've just lowered jim's age, but taking into account that his age is actually important to the story being told, they just should've casted an actual 40 years old. which in turns wouldn't have worked bc moonlight chicken was built around ships & more importantly around earthmix...

Hey so I picked up if we were villains on your recommendation and am loving the Shakespeare structure and references. I have been getting "disaster bi" vibes from the protagonist since act one but I'm halfway through and haven't seen the signs of a turn coming in his relationships. Does the book get gayer? Or is it all in my head?

oh, hey! well, i am glad you're enjoying it so far! oliver is *definitely* a disaster bi with a lot of internalised issues and a glaring blindspot in self-reflection. idk if you've read my (very short) goodreads review for this book, but i think what's essential to this story is the simmering potential haunting the text in every aspect. you have characters, relationship dynamics, plot points, mysteries, class dynamics, etc. (even shakespeare's texts) haunting the narrative—mostly metaphorically but in connection to the big "who-done-it" even literally. the subtext is definitely what gives the text its meaning and creates palpable tensions in all aspects of the narrative. in the end it all boils down to a myriad of "what-ifs" that ignite and fuel your engagement with the text.

so, does the book get gayer after the halfway point? kind of, but also kind of not. it's very hard to give a clear answer because the appeal of the story is based on the elusive nature of the text as a whole. that doesn't mean that some things are not more explicitly expressed further down the line. it just means that the story skilfully uses potential and ambiguity (i.e. "what-ifs") to build narrative & emotional momentum. if you get the feeling there is *something* there, then there's probably something there. the story definitely asks you to pay attention and pick up on hints and cues before presenting you with any revelations—it's kind of its charm, i think. so, is it all in your head? no. no, it's definitely not all in your head. but i am sure you'll get what i mean once you've finished the book....
