I have mixed feelings about Zerxus in season 3 of TLOVM, but I’ve gotta say hearing him give a Totally Unbiased Account of EXU: Calamity with Definitely No Omissions Whatsoever was kind of funny. Like “ooh I thought I could count on my friends….they condemned our civilisation….” Ok Zerxus. Buddy. Last time I checked, Nydas was actually the only one trying to stop Laerryn from blighting the tree. You sat there like a chump and did not help whatsoever. And uh. “They condemned our civilisation with their hubris” ummm pal I think you’re missing an important detail there. Like yes the point of EXU: Calamity is that everyone played a role in the disaster, everyone was responsible in some ways for that ship crashing into the iceberg, but uh. Zerxus I think some people were maybe a little more responsible than others. Like, for example, the certain someone who pulled the Lord of the Hells into Exandria. I think that individual’s hubris is maaaaaybe a little bit more important than some of the other hubris on the table here.
And like, this isn’t me bashing the writing, I think it is in-character for TLOVM!Zerxus to say this, since he’s been a jaded miserable devil for a thousand years. But omg when he had the CHEEK to be like “in the chaos I found myself face-to-face with the Lord of Torment himself” like EXCUSE ME??? Buddy you just happened to “find yourself” face-to-face with Asmodeus huh??? Just coincidentally, on accident??? You were just taking a stroll around Avalir and he ran into you without warning??
Zerxus. Please. Be serious for a moment. Would you like to explain to Pike the exact circumstances of HOW you found yourself face-to-face with Asmodeus, hmmmmm? A certain “pulling Asmodeus through the tree and unleashing him upon the world” situation?
Like, I know it was meant to be a serious moment with lots of Calamity-related hype but like, it was really giving “Girl what were YOU doing at the devil’s sacrament” energy. In the most literal way possible

There's poetry to the way he's being very resentful about them, but the way they're presented here, assuming we're seeing through Zerxus' eyes, is very saint-like.
Golden halos, glittering, looking away sternly, painfully.
And he's not included in it --- not in the blame, not in the holiness.

This line from Brennan (and series producer Kyle Shire) has been living rent-free in my head ever since EXU Calamity first aired - so here, for all your hubris-expressing needs, is Eternal Disco Brennan! He points onwards, oblivious to the coming of punk and glam rock and all the forces of tide and time that will drag him from his glittering throne and dash him upon the shores of the Top of the Pops of yesteryear...

thinking about how, in calamity, time and distance weigh on the narrative like how evandrin haunts it, but just like how evandrin isn’t dead—“the ritual didn’t work. what’s the most logical explanation?”—the docking into cathmoira every seven years is not the only way to see these family members. but the narrative is weaved in such a way that it isn’t until we’re in the thick of the finale, and people are vivisecting on teleportation pads and overcrowding airships and fleeing through portals in trees—and then patia teleports the orb and library, guaranteeing her end. loquacious turns down the offer to return through the gate. nydas does not leave on a ship or his dragon, and zerxus does not leave on tempest, and cerrit does not leave with his kids (although he does leave for them time and time again). it’s never even a choice for laerryn. and it all matters, and it truly was never an option to begin with—“we all go down with the ship”—but that’s not what I’m talking about.
there’s all these ways to get around, it’s the age of arcanum after all. if you can’t do it yourself, you surely know someone who can (for a fee or a favor, of course).
so, to follow to a logical explanation,
nydas never visited his brother, his family?
zerxus never went to see his son?
how many times do you think patia or laerryn offered to teleport for a visit? how many times did zerxus almost ask?

Out of all of the many, many memorable and quotable moments in EXU: Calamity these two lines Brennan says at the end always gets me. Saying this, at the end of a tragedy, that the lives of the characters and their choices did matter, no matter the final outcome is something I really appreciated. So, because I’m super normal all the time, I had to get it tattooed on me permanently!

It is real fun when the guests don't know about the cast's connection to an NPC, so Robbie is just sitting there silently watching them bully this NPC going, "Well, this tracks."

Do you ever stop to think about how Ludinus is just an amalgamation of Laerryn (or every Age of Arcanum wizard really) and Zerxus without any of their nice or redeeming qualities?
He's just a guy who locked himself in his tower in Molaesmyr obsessing about the gods and Ruidus, had brief contact (like "reaching into an Alien Dream"), and decided he needed to hack into the weird power source under the city without knowing what it was or what tampering with it would do so he could commune with whatever was on Ruidus all because he was curious. But unlike Laerryn and Zerxus who tried to prevent further catastrophe after unintentionally destroying a city, Ludinus doubled down and decided this was still a good path to go down for another 500 years. What a dick.

a headcanon that i have is that the reason why fcg thinks the world is flat is because they are a aeormaton and some old programming still rememebers being on Aeor the flying city that is flat like a vinyl disk.

This channel composed nine songs (more like background music) for Exu Calamity and it rocks so I'm sharing it in case y'all haven't heard it yet. It's also on spotify but the videos have really nice painting-like visuals.

Having dnd NPCS (and OCs) is so crazy because I know their entire life their interests their loves their friends their everything but there is not a single other person who knows about all these thoughts swirling around in my head
It’s like i know how these characters broke down in their rooms by themselves what poetry they tell themselves in the dark and what their childish little hopes and dreams are and how it all ended… you’re the biggest silent tragedy a famed martyr of your time but only in my head
It makes me think about how i will be someday; how most of me will have just been thoughts I had never said and in the far future i will be dust, with nothing that is left of me at all
