I think about Sophie Holland’s thread about casting Joey Batey a lot
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She tweeted this out I think a month or two before the Witcher came out. She talks about how difficult it was finding the perfect person to play Jaskier. And then Joey Batey walks in, with his charm and his lute and like - you can clearly read it in her tweets - it’s love at first sight. She knew she struck gold; she was going to a-star-is-born Joey.
I just think about how Sophie openly knew that Jaskier was going to be, if not maybe the standout, definitely the highlight of the show for a lot of fans (I won’t speculate on how anyone else felt, since I don’t think that info is on the record). And I just think this speaks not only to Joey Batey’s undeniable star power as an actor, but also to how absolutely visionary casting directors are when they set out to find the most-perfect person for each role.
Anyway sorry for my sappy rant. Just thank you Sophie for persisting, for doing that One Last Push, for finding us Joey. Many of us I know are forever grateful and indebted to you 💛

I read the book a while ago and DCTL!Sammy was so frustrating that as a Sammy fan, I need to rant about him.
The man in the book may have had his name, but that thing was not the Sammy Lawrence I knew and loved.
First off: What the fuck? No seriously, what the actual fuck. Who the fuck is this man and what has he done with Sammy? Lets take all the Sammys we’ve seen in canon and compare them:
Tapes!Sammy: A tired, annoyed and bitter musician who is done with the shit his boss is putting him through. He sounds like he has bags under his eyes and is wearing a perfected a Customer Service Smile(TM) during work hours. 10/10 would pay to listen to him bitch about Joey in the break room.
Chapter 2!Sammy: Creepy, dramatic, stupidly trying to get a demon to notice him, and a ham of a villain. Judging by the phrase “He will set US free” pared with the fact we find out he lives in the village built by the searchers and lost ones and that he appears to he their leader, it seems like in universe, he’s the only one who cares about these miserable, once human creatures enough to actively help them. Even Allison Angel and Tom Boris, the ‘good’ guys, slaughter them mercilessly in their own home after they kill their leader. 10/10, fucking superb you funky little cultist man. (Henry gets a pass because he’s just trying to live and appears to show more empathy to them/guilt to them: ‘I’m sorry I had to do that, nice hat though’, ‘please don’t cry’, to himself: ‘you bring death’ ‘once people, now fallen into despair’)
Hot Topic Q&A!Sammy: still creepy, but this man is a delight. He’s kind, he’s encouraging, he praises his fellow employees often, he’s passionate about his work and he has a wonderful sense of humor. We learn that he has memory problems but he’s trying his best. If this is what he’s normally like then I’m not surprised that the searchers/lost ones are willing to risk their lives to avenge him and I feel bad for him. 11/10, best sympathetic villain I’ve seen in years, would take him on a date to Coney Island.
Chapter 5!Sammy: Full of unbridled rage and pain after being betrayed. Attacks Henry on sight and we learn that he doesn’t like being seen without his mask. I don’t know what set him off this badly but I wish I did. 7/10, could’ve been better.
Employee Handbook!Sammy: Calling people sheep pre-ink is pretty weird to see from him considering that it’s an insult here and a term of endearment during the Q&A and I hope he’s either being sarcastic or is being blackmailed by Joey. 7/10, stop simping for Drew’s dick, king you deserve better wages, a better workplace, and a better boss.
DCTL!Sammy: I legit cringed every time he showed up and had to put the book down for a bit because he was just that unpleasant. Like Chapter 5!Sammy he is full of rage, unlike Chapter 5!Sammy he’s just lashing out at absolutely everyone and is a complete jackass who is also implied to be a bigot. The only thing this Sammy has in common with the other Sammys is his name, music and calling people ‘sheep’. If nobody said his name I’m pretty sure we’d all 100% accept that this is an entirely different character and that Sammy died before Buddy showed up. He’d be a terrible character who I’m pretty sure everybody would love to hate, but a different character nonetheless. His only redeeming quality is that he drinks ink and I think that’s kinda funny. -100/10, who are you and what have you done to my himbo ink husband?
Apparently, according to themeatly, DCTL!Sammy’s bad behavior is the ink making him more aggressive, and he disrespects Tom’s Job, not his skin color. I could buy those two points out of context as Sammy hates the pipes and pump switch in his office, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he took his anger out on Tom because he can’t do shit to Joey and Tom’s the one who installed the pipes/pump switch in his office. And I assume getting your flesh slowly but steadily transmuted into ink feels terrible and therefore, more likely to lash out more often.
But then why do we get the lines “What’s the matter Mr. Lawrence? Not used to giving someone like me respect?” (when Tom is talking to Sammy) and “I remembered Sammy calling the man from gent “Tom” and not “Mr. Conner” and I wondered if this was a habit of his. If this was what he did with everyone. Or maybe...how had Jacob put it in the bar about women and black people not getting the same respect” (Buddy thinking while watching Sammy talk to Abby)
How come we don’t get a non-inked DCTL!Sammy to compare to inked DCTL!Sammy? Why do we ONLY get the vile-behaving venom-spitting DCTL!Sammy? The audience might see the change in behavior and automatically think “Oh fuck something supernatural is going on” but this is a prequel story! we already know shit’s gonna go down! In story the characters could chalk it up to “Oh he’s probably being shitter than usual because he’s under a lot more stress than usual.” Or something like that.
What especially pisses me off is how EASY it would be to fix the bigot problem! What if we took the lines and changed them to: “What’s the matter Mr. Lawrence? Not used to giving a blue collar like me respect?” (So that it establishes that it IS the job and not the skin Sammy has a problem with like themeatly had wanted us to read it as apparently.) and “I Remembered Sammy calling the man “Tom” and not “Mr. Conner” and I wondered if this was a habit of his. If this is what he did with everyone. If it was, then how come he never calls me by my name?” He’d still be an asshole but at least he’d be a less shitty one.
Speaking of which, lets talk about something that I’ve never seen anybody else comment on: the fact he treats our protagonist Buddy with so much more disrespect than I’ve seen every other character in the book. It’s not just me, right? Was I really the only one who noticed this?
While Sammy does call everybody by their first names, (Joey, Tom, and Abby) the exception to this rule appears to be Daniel “Buddy” Lewek, whom he instead calls “Art Department”, while the other characters are referred to casually instead of properly, they at least are called their own names, poor Buddy gets a nickname based off of which part of the studio he works in.
Right off the bat, when Buddy helps DTCL!Sammy get the ink out of his face do you know what he immediately does afterwards? Does he say “Thanks for the help”, “Oh hey, you’re new.”, “I swear those pipes will kill me one day, good thing it wasn’t today” or anything else like that? nope!
He just drags Buddy to the closet and he forces him to clean up the ink. In the employee handbook, we know that only Wally is allowed to clean up ink-related messes and it’s fair to assume that Sammy knows this so why is he breaking the rules by forcing Buddy to clean the ink for just being at the wrong place at the wrong time? He didn’t even apologize for his behavior anywhere, he just intimidates Buddy and later in the book attempts to kill him for Bendy.
In conclusion: I am frustrated and this is not my inky himbo music man.

SlipKnot the Beginning
[All of this info was copied form the archive of this blog on Skyrock.com circa 2009-2010: User - maggot777 on SkyRock . com]
[I’m just sharing it and take no credit]
Des Moines is the capital of Iowa, the twenty-ninth of the fifty states of the USA. The city contains about 200,000 inhabitants for a little less than 200,000 km² and 500,000 reside in the suburbs. There is no Persian diversity in Des Moines, to speak in numbers 90% of people are white. The city is not known as a "dynamic" city, it is rather total boredom there! If we had to summarize what there is in Des Moines we would put: offices (especially insurance companies), factories, churches, a few shops and buildings ... ah I forgot the city hosts also the World Pork Expo. We understand why some say it's "the asshole of the United States"! "It's not just a big urban center, it's not a village either, it's just ... the area. There is absolutely nothing to do. The main activity for young people is 'is to find something to do. In Des Moines, everything is closed at 6 p.m. When you're not old enough, you can't go to a club; when you're old, you go. and you realize that it really sucks. And then it's a very conservative place, where people are not very inclined to encourage artists, whoever they are. " (James Root in Guitar Part, July 2001) "Des Moines is like a cemetery with buildings growing on it. It's a small place, with a majority of old people. It's the second highest concentration of old people in the country. Imagine what it is like. to be 15 years old in this puritanical and totalitarian environment. There is nothing else to do but to have rabies! " (Corey Taylor in Hit Parader, May 2000) However, it was during a concert in Des Moines that one of rock's greatest anecdotal moment happened. On that day of January 20, 1982, Ozzy Osbourne was playing in the city and tore off the head of the live bat! Indeed a spectator had thrown the animal, then unconscious, on the stage to provoke the singer who, thinking that it was one of his plastic bats, bit it deeply! Several rabies vaccines were injected into him. It was this event that traumatized young Joey Jordison, aged less than 7, for life. In high school he joined the Avanga group as a guitarist. But considering the terrible level of the drummer he had to place himself behind the drums. But quickly he is annoyed by the other members of the group, preferring to smoke weed and get drunk at various student parties. He then left the group and created Modifious. He recruits his neighbor Tim on vocals and Jay, Avanga's guitarist who has since become one of Joey's best friends. The trio that lacked a bass player found one in Ryan who had responded to the ad about the band. Modifious then makes Trash Metal, a style that fascinates Joey. Unfortunately some time after the formation of the group, Jay is killed one evening, in a car accident, after falling asleep at the wheel. Despite the drama, Modifious hires a new guitarist named Bruce. But the Bruce in question abandoned the group some time later and joined Atomic Opera. He is replaced by a certain Craig Jones, a friend of Ryan's. In 1992, Tim left the group, replaced by Josh Brainard on guitar and vocals. It is this formation which, in 1993, will record the first two demo cassettes of Modifious: Visceral and Mud Fuschia. By dint of playing intensively in Des Moines and its surroundings, the group began to have a good reputation. He even manages to get the first part of the group Type O Negative! Which will be their hour of glory. In 1994, the two demos are combined in a CD: Sprawl. Then the Trash Metal went out of fashion giving way to Death and Black. The group then changes style for a more radical music but that displeases Ryan who leaves the group. Following the departure of Ryan and the disaffection of the public Modifious split up in 1995. But Joey has already planned everything: he has two groups in parallel. He is the guitarist of Paul Gray, when he arrived in Des Moines in 1989, played in VeXX where he was bassist alongside guitarist-singer Josh Brainard and drummer Anders Colsefini. In 1991, VeXX changed its name (but not its line-up) and became Inveigh Catarsis until 1993. From this date the guitarist-singer Josh Brainard left the group to join Modifious. The group therefore split up, but Paul and Anders, who have become very friends, form a new group. They then formed Body Pit, a Death Metal combo composed of guitarist Mick Thompson, second guitarist DonnieSteele and Danny Spain on drums. Body Pit, starting to make itself known, even managed to compete with Modifious and Atomic Opera in the Des Moines Metal scene. Beside that, Paul finds his drummer friend Joey Jordison in the group Anal Of Blast that But let's take a step back. We are in 1992 and Paul is part of the Painface group. He plays alongside his friend Anders Colsefini on vocals, Patrick M. Neuwirth on guitar and drummer Shawn Crahan. The quartet plays dark and aggressive music and, rehearsing in Paul Gray's cellar, they manage to compose five pieces: "Slipknot", "Gently", "Idiot", "What's Wrong" and "Wise Up". They record his songs with the means at hand. These pieces gathered under the title of Basement Sessions, are in fact part of a rehearsal of the group. In 1993, Shawn Crahan joined another group: Heads on the Wall. This event will temporarily stop Painface's career. During its three years of existence, from 1993 to 1995, Heads on the Wall will perform four times in the first part of Modifious. The guitarist is a certain Kun Nong with whom he decides to set up another project called Meld. The group therefore brings together Shawn Crahan on drums, Kun Nong on guitar, Paul Gray on bass, Anders Colsefini as singer and Donnie Steele on guitar. Even though the band members start to compose a few songs, Shawn can't seem to get the band off the ground. But in 1995, while he was tinkering with Paul Gray in his garage, Shawn told him that he wanted to create THE band. Anders Colsefini as singer and Donnie Steele on guitar. Even though the band members start to compose a few songs, Shawn can't seem to get the band off the ground. But in 1995, while he was tinkering with Paul Gray in his garage, Shawn told him that he wanted to create THE band. Anders Colsefini as singer and Donnie Steele on guitar. Even though the band members start to compose a few songs, Shawn can't seem to get the band off the ground. But in 1995, while he was tinkering with Paul Gray in his garage, Shawn told him that he wanted to create THE band. Shawn and Paul recruit Anders on vocals, Donnie on guitar, and Kun on guitar to create The Pale Ones. The combo will repeat and compose, in the basement of Anders 'parents' house, as if their life depended on it. To perfect their technique, they go so far as to film their rehearsals on video! One day Shawn's mom looked at one of the tapes and said, "Anders, you look like a wolf ready to attack. Shawn you look like a gorilla. And the band in general makes me feel like I'm attending the party. what would overexcited cavemen give before going to slaughter a mammoth! " From that moment on, Shawn will be called Kong by his comrades as a nickname and in tribute to King Kong. But about two months after the formation of the group Kun Nong decides to leave the group and turns to more punk projects. Anders would later say: "Kun Nong is a phenomenal and exceptional guitarist, but certainly not a Metal guitarist." Meanwhile Paul tries to convince his friend Joey to join the group on one of his nightly visits to his workplace. Joey works at Sinclair's gas station. Paul suggests that she go see a rehearsal. He will miss two because of his job, but he will eventually come to Anders 'parents' basement to see the band play. It is low to the ceiling, narrow and covered with bits of carpet to absorb sound and avoid neighborhood problems. But unfortunately, the carpet from a pet store is impregnated with the smell of puppy urine that does not control their bladder! Despite the drawbacks, the little drummer was impressed by the three pieces performed: “Slipknot”, “Gently and“ Fur. ”Joey then said to himself that he absolutely must join this training. This is what he will do officially on September 15, 1995. The group, now composed of a drummer AND a percussionist, takes more power. Shawn then leaves his place of drummer to Joey and tinkers with a percussion kit thanks to his talents as a welder. During Joey's long working nights at Sincair's, Paul and Shawn visit him. They then talk about the future of the group. Shawn then declares that there should be a second percussionist to increase the aggressiveness of the combo. Anders then agrees to sing and do percussion. In the visual, like Joey, Shawn is a big fan of Kiss, it is also the first concert he saw during the Creatures Of The Night tour. Moreover one fine day, Shawn arrives at a masked rehearsal of a clown mask. A few day later, Joey did the same and arrived with a Kabuki mask, which is in traditional Japanese theater, on his face. He also has the good idea to add red and black paints to it for a more frightening aspect. Which is also in agreement with his two-tone hair of the same color. But the idea of the masks at first was just a joke. Joey will say later: "We had trouble playing a song, we were so laughing!". To replace Kun Nong the group decides to recruit guitarist Josh Brainard to add a melodic touch to the sextet. The group now containing six musicians, composes in a very short time six new songs: "Killers Are Quiet", "Do Nothing / Bitchslap", "Confessions", "Some Feel", "Part of Me" and "Tattered And Torn" . After briefly changing their group name to Pyg System the sextet then adopts the name Slipknot ("flowing neud"). Joey is in charge of the group's logo. He first creates a beautiful tribal "S" then draws the logo of the typographical group SlipKnoT. The idea of putting a capital "K" came from the fact that Joey, in these days, was a mega-fan of KoЯn. A few months later, Anders got the tribal "S" tattooed by a certain Greg "Cuddles" Welts who soon became the band's official tattoo artist. It must also be said that Greg, since 1995, is the drummer of Have Nots, a group of Hardcore Punk directed by David "DaVo" Wilkins, owner of the tattoo and piercing shop Axiom where Greg works, and in which Paul and Joey officiate. as ... guitarists! Des Moines being quite small, people quickly learn of the existence of the group without it being done in concert yet. In November 1995, the group decided to give a small concert in a local club named Crowbar (which would later be renamed The Love Shack) but under the name Meld, to keep the mystery on SlipKnoT (an idea of Josh). This intimate concert was done under a greenish lighting, without a mask, but with make-up inspired by the group Kiss and fancy accessories, such as pipes crossing the various piercings of Paul's face and Anders' wolf skin. The group being convinced that their compositions were of quality, he decides to contact a professional recording studio to put the compositions on CD. They contacted THE Des Moines studio called SR Studio. It is directed by a certain Mike Lawyer who has produced artists such as Todd Rundgren, Tinny Tim or Michael Bolton. At the end of 1995, Anders and Paul meet the sound engineer of the studio: Sean McMahon. They manage to convince Sean to come see them rehearse. He then made the trip to the cellar of Anders' parents to see the sextet repeated. At the end of rehearsal, Sean remains speechless as he is so impressed by their music, he does not understand their approach or their lyrics. He then agrees to produce their first recording. Work then begins at SR Studio, where the band goes there as soon as possible to rehearse, play and record as much as possible for the album whose title they have already chosen: Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. To feel at home and make themselves comfortable, they decide to redecorate the studio in their own way: porn posters, particular lights, toys and objects testifying to the strange atmosphere that reigns there. The bizarre atmosphere moves to the parking lot where corpses drawn in chalk appear ... The tracks are recorded live with the three drummers at the same time. Shawn puts so much heart into the work that the (poor) wall next to his percussion is filled with holes made by his sticks and fists. For one track, Joey plays the drums completely naked! Throughout this recording period, Joey continues to work at Sinclair's gas station. He left rehearsals around 10 pm, picked up a CD player and a portable TV, and began his night shift. An hour or two later, Shawn usually joins him to talk about the future of the group until five in the morning. These "small working meetings" used to scare potential customers who went to seek their essence, But the finalization of the album, arrived at the mixing stage, may be longer than expected. Indeed, in February 1996, Donnie, the guitarist of the group, decided to leave the group because "the musical and spiritual orientation" did not suit him because he would in fact have had a mystical revelation and would therefore have seen God! The other members of the group, being tolerant, accepted his departure amicably. Joey then proposes to replace Donnie by Craig Jones, the last guitarist to date of Modifious. Craig then arrives in the middle of mixing the album. The atmosphere within the group is tense: the mix is most chaotic! Each of the six band members give a different opinion of how one song should sound than another. Having a habit of remedying it with violence to sort out the various problems, Joey, Paul, Anders, Shawn and Josh often come to blows. In addition, in the end, the group is very disappointed with the mastering of the album and insists that Sean remake it himself. During the mixing, SlipKnoT discovers that in addition to being an excellent guitarist, Craig is a computer buff and handles samples wonderfully. However, before releasing a record, the sextet must prove itself on stage. It was finally on April 4, 1996 that SlipKnoT gave its first real concert in a Rock club in Des Moines called Safari. The rumor of the group having swelled, it is about 200 people who come to attend the concert, which is about the maximum of people that the club can contain. Taken by Joey in his own car, SlipKnoT is already dressed exceptionally. Shawn wears his Clown mask and Joey wears his kabuki mask; Paul has his piercings attached to each other again, Anders is covered in tribal paint, Josh is masked with an executioner's hood, and Craig wears a stocking on his face. While the group is piling up on the small stage, Joey starts repeating the same phrase, louder and louder and more and more mean: "I need a little Christmas in my drink!". Then the group starts with its eponymous hymn: "Slipknot". The group will then make its small effect although sharing the poster with another group endowed with a more important notoriety named Stone Sour and carried by their singer: a certain Corey Taylor. The Corey in question, being there during the band's performance, soon became a big fan of the band. The following month, SlipKnoT will be featured seven times as Safari's headliner. During their second concert at Safari; Paul chose to cover his face with a pig mask "because it was cheap", which earned him the nickname Porky. The machine being launched, at each concert the members disguised themselves in the most extravagant ways by associating the great guignolesque with the unhealthy. Indeed, at one performance, Shawn showed up wearing a Barney costume, a fat half-man, half-dinosaur figure appearing in an educational series for small children as the main hero. He would add later: "It was the hardest thing I have done in my whole life, but I managed to make Barney have it to be on crack!" The others will appear in turn dressed in the costume of a nun, a shepherdess, Santa Claus, in a worker's jumpsuit stained with paint or in a ball gown! The concerts are introduced by a sample, directed by Craig, of a mad laugh and a naive melody of an ice cream truck while Shawn uses a power saw to spark sparks above the impressed audience. Moreover, the idea of samples to accentuate the creepy and unhealthy character went around the heads of all members. Thus, Craig gave up his position as second guitarist to concentrate on electronics. Paul then had the idea to call his friend Mick Thompson with whom he had already played in the group Body Pit with Anders. But after Mick's arrival on guitar, the group being now seven, Anders 'parents' cellar became too small and Craig was forced to put his equipment in the laundry room! But it would have taken a lot more to discourage SlipKnoT ... the idea of samples to accentuate the creepy and unhealthy character circled all of the members. But after Mick's arrival on guitar, the group being now seven, Anders 'parents' cellar became too small and Craig was forced to put his equipment in the laundry room! But it would have taken a lot more to discourage SlipKnoT ... It was finally on October 31, 1996 that the group gave birth to its first record: Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. The album, printed in 1000 copies, will have cost a total of 15,000 dollars, between recording, mixing, mastering and pressing. A large part of the sum was paid by Shawn, which indebted him heavily. To celebrate the release of the CD, SlipKnoT organized a big party bringing together no less than 400 people obviously all masked! This Halloween party will mark, according to the group, a turning point in the history of Safari. It is indeed from this event that the Metal public began to frequent the club regularly. The picture of the album cover, with its glaucous atmosphere, in fact shows Joey masked and crouched in a metal cage bristling with spikes and including the mechanism of a large circular saw. This instrument of torture was obviously built by Mr. Crahan, like a work of art which he delicately titled Patiently Awaiting Jigsaw Flesh ("Flesh patiently waiting for the jigsaw"). The title of the album refers to the most basic cycle of life: to mate ("Mate"), to feed ("Feed"), to kill ("Kill") and to start again ("Repeat") this infinite cycle. . These nine tracks already carry the basics of today's SlipKnoT. In the notes of the libretto, the group dedicates the album to a certain Joey. He is not' This is of course not drummer Joey Jordison but Joey Plumley, Franck Plumley's brother being a close friend of the band. This Joey accidentally died while handling a gun while the band was recording the album. On the internal photo of the CD, we also see two people close to the group: Greg Welts and DaVo. Finally the booklet includes the name of Corn Wallace. It's actually the name Joey and Anders coined after the drummer drew a childish monster with huge claws and wacky hair. They then began to use this name to sign, one these drawings and the other these texts. while the band was recording the album. But it was on a local radio station in Iowa, KKDM 107.5, that a certain Sophia Jones received the CD and, although not an outstanding Metal specialist, particularly enjoyed the album. She then begins to make a rave review of the album, which then allows SlipKnoT to participate in the Battle of Bands, a competition organized every Wednesday by KKDM at the Safari, and which opposes groups of Des Moines to make themselves better known or at best get noticed by a label. In his first competition, SlipKnoT faces Stone Sour and wins which allows Corey Taylor to think he would really like to sing in this band! During his subsequent participations, SlipKnoT then begins to become a very busy occupation for each of the members of the group, including Joey and Paul who also have to perform within the Have Nots. Especially since Joey, who does not drink, does not support very well the alcoholism of his comrades including Paul! It is besides after a particularly catastrophic performance in October 1996 that Joey threatens to tackle the group to concentrate only on SlipKnoT. It is therefore from this moment that the members of the group will agree not to drink before a concert. Meanwhile, SlipKnoT is starting to gain momentum but no label wants them! It was then that the group asked Sophia Jones to become their manager. She hesitates but accepts because she feels a lot of talent in them. She even declared after a few months: "I see SlipKnoT doing Ozzfest, selling a million albums, making the cover of Rolling Stones and starting her own label."

A Conversation with Chosen Few Guest DJ, Emmaculate!
Raised by a Father and Mother who were a musician & abstract painter, respectively, Eric Welton AKA Emmaculate was groomed for the arts.  As a child he dug into his parents’ and older brother’s record collection spanning from The Beatles & James Taylor to Run D.M.C. & The Fat Boys.  Growing up on the outskirts of Chicago, he was exposed to the sounds of House Music in the late 80’s as a young teenager. In 1990, Eric started collecting House & Hip Hop records and learning how to blend.  One of his close friends had an older cousin who was a DJ with an extensive record collection, but was incarcerated.  Eric’s friend brought this collection over to his house, which turned out to be a treasure chest of 80’s House Music.  The obsession began.  Eric’s mixtapes quickly caught the ear of some older guys in the area.  They took him in under their wings, taught him much more about the music & culture, took him to legendary record stores Importes Etc & Gramaphone, & introduced him to a professional recording studio.  This all led to Eric starting to DJ basement & house parties as a teenager, some thrown by a budding young promoter, Julius the Mad Thinker (co-founder of Mi Casa Holiday), who is one of Eric’s high school friends.
Eric was nicknamed Emmaculate as a play on words because of his immaculate attention to detail & quality.  He developed his DJ’ing & production skills in House Music & Hip Hop, and became one of the go to producers and sound engineers in Chicago.  He has worked as a producer and mix engineer for many top Urban Music artists in the US, as well as DJ’d countless events.  Over the years, Emmaculate forged relationships with some of the Chicago legends of House Music, giving him an invaluable education and mentorship.
2017 marked the year that Emmaculate began releasing music as an artist himself. His break out single, “Do It” ft. vocalist Kaye Fox, was released on Terry Hunter’s T’s Box Records and reached the top 10 Soulful House chart on Traxsource.  Since then he has released several singles, remixes & an EP on T’s Box, Dopewax, & S&S Records.  He has played live sets at Mi Casa Holiday in Mexico several times, as well as Amsterdam Dance Event in 2017 & 2018 for T’s Box & Chosen Few DJ’s. His sounds are eclectic... sometimes hard, acidic, dreamy, jazzy, funky, & soulful... a cosmic slop of organic technology".  I first spoke with Emmaculate two years ago (Check out my first conversation with Emmaculate here). Since then, his career has grown rapidly. I recently had a chance to speak with Emmaculate for a second time about his continued growth, his new projects and playing this year’s Chosen Few Picnic and Festival!
Black Widow:  It’s been two years since my last interview with you and quite a bit has happened with you and your career.  What has that journey been like?
Emmaculate:  It has been an amazing journey. I’m very happy I made the decision to change the route of my career. I spent many years working in the studio producing other artists; predominately R&B and hip hop artists. I wasn’t just producing music for them, I was helping them with their marketing and promotion and helping them manage their business and the decision to put that same effort into myself, by releasing my own music under my own name and working on branding myself…was a great decision.  I’m also glad I made the decision to start working with Terry (Hunter).  It has been such a blessing. We’ve developed a really good, reciprocal working relationship. He’s done so much to help me and provide his platform for me to release my music and more. It’s all happening faster than I expected honestly.
Black Widow: I know! Just two years ago, we met and I recorded vocals for your re-release of your song Fenix.  You have quite a few releases since then with Kaye Fox and others, remixing and of course producing.  You’ve been very busy.
Emmaculate:  Yeah, I’ve released three records with Kaye Fox, done some instrumental tracks for the 2087 project, remixes packages on various things and the Glenn Underground remix of my track, The Light did excellent. I’ve been able to work with quite a few incredible artists, Mark Demayo, Mike City, Alex M. I have an EP coming out on Youruba records with Osunlade. Even on the DJ side, I’ve been able to play ADE twice, SouthBySouthwest, and it’s just been one thing after another and I’m very happy with the momentum.  I’m just keeping my nose to the grindstone.
Black Widow: What do they say, “Booked and Busy”!
Emmaculate:  Absolutely, it’s all about focusing on the work, the creativity and putting blinders on the distractions. As long as you stay focused on creating, all the other stuff lines up on its own.
Black Widow:   What have been some of the best lessons you’ve learned over the past two years?
Emmaculate:  There’s a lot of noise and negative noise if you choose to listen to it or give energy to it but like I said earlier, I’ve learned to just focus on the work, the music, the creativity.  I’ve learned to stay focused on what we do it for; it’s about the love of the music; the creative and personal artistic expression.  Its fun…you have to remember to have fun with it.  It’s not supposed to be stressful. This is art. It’s supposed to be what we love and it’s a choice.   Staying focused on creativity and treating people well, that really sums it all up.
Black Widow:  Has your creative process changed? Do you approach making music differently now?
Emmaculate:  I’ve learned quite a bit over the last few years.  For the people who read the credits, you can see I do a lot of remixing, editing and final mixing of records. I’ve mixed the majority of Terry’s records over the past few years and by working with him and seeing his process, I’ve learned.  It’s always something new to learn and watching him and how he builds records has been a great learning experience. He’s a master at his craft and it’s led to me working with other artists and watching how they do things.  As an engineer, working with Joey Fernandez has been great. He’s another master at his craft.  He’s taught me some tricks of the trade in terms of mixing and things like that.  We just all have a good synergy because we always bounce ideas and critique one another.   Even as a DJ, watching great DJs do their thing is very inspiring. There are always takeaways from being in the midst of fellow creatives. I’m a sponge, I love the experience of being around some of the greats and observing what they do and taking that influence and applying them in my own way.
Black Widow: I definitely relate. I remember not knowing much about songwriting and song structure because I was a poet. Being around Terry and Mike was great because I was learning how they put my words to music and how they place them and even now over the years, connecting with other songwriters and vocalists is so inspiring to me.  It’s nothing like sharing space with other creatives. You just learn so much.
Emmaculate: I love drawing inspiration off of what other dope people are doing.    Competition can be positive and fun or it can be negative in spirit.  I believe iron sharpens iron so you want to be around people who are great at their craft.  It can’t be ego based, fragile, and paranoid and negative spirited.
Black Widow:  I agree there are so many artists in this scene and there is space for everyone.
Emmaculate:  There’s enough opportunity to go around for sure. Every success from any artist here draws attention to our city as a whole and makes it more likely for all of to get more opportunities. That’s how I approach it.
Black Widow:  Building those relationships and connections with others in the industry is important.  It helps because it’s another form of support.   I remember my 1st performance and being so scared. After I performed, I remember Terisa Griffith being so complimentary to me. It really did something for my confidence and it was such a small thing but it meant a lot. I remember thinking Terry threw me under the bus [laughter] when he asked me to perform with such an incredible lineup of experienced talent but he really did it to make me better and it was a huge learning experience for me.
Emmaculate:  I have a similar story. At the T’s Box party, ADE in 2017, Wayne (Williams) and Alan (King) were doing a tag team at the T’s Box Party.   I’ve been DJing professionally since 1990 but it was my first time DJing in Europe. I remember Terry saying; hey…get in on the tag team! That was my first time playing with Wayne and Alan [LAUGHTER] So here I am, my first time playing in Europe and I’m in a tag team with legends. [LAUGHTER]  You know…you have to get uncomfortable in order to grow.  Being nervous and uncomfortable is a good thing. It pushes you to the next level.
Black Widow:  I completely understand that! Every experience is a learning one; good and bad!
Emmaculate:  What you said is key…stay focused on improving your craft. You have to always push yourself to improve and be better.
Black Widow:  My dad would always say, whatever your art is, it’s a muscle and you have to work that muscle every day.  You have to make space for your craft.  I think I’ve really come to a greater understanding of that since “Fenix” honestly.
Emmaculate:  You know what’s funny about Fenix?  Terry never told me what he had up his sleeve when he was doing that version. Julius and I had done the song on our own label years ago.  One day he called me and asked me why I called it Fenix. I explained it to him and he said ok and that was that.  When I heard what you wrote, I was like, WOW, that’s perfect!  It’s amazing that we never had a conversation about this when you wrote it because you articulated exactly what I wanted the song to say. That’s the way the universe works.
Black Widow: My dad call’s that the “collective consciousness”
Emmaculate: Exactly! Your dad is a wise man.  That’s exactly what it is and we just happened to be tapped in…all three of us.  It worked.
Black Widow:  I loved that opportunity so much because after making Rough, I wanted to do something different and show a different side of me. Don’t get me wrong, I love “Rough” but…
Emmaculate: I think you made it clear in the song, how much you love it Rough! [LAUGHTER]
Black Widow:  [Laughter] True, but it was just a piece of who I am and I wanted to share another side and Fenix gave me that opportunity!
Emmaculate: Absolutely! I still play it and the acapella version all the time.
Black Widow:  We are totally getting off topic! [Laughter]
Emmaculate: I know! But it’s all good!
Black Widow:   What was your reaction when you got the call to play this year’s Chosen Few Festival?
Emmaculate:  Terry called me a few weeks before the official announcement and tricked me.  I honestly never expected to get booked to play this year.  I thought it might happen one day but I never thought it would be this year.  Terry says, "What are you doing on July 6th"?  I remembered that date but said," Whatever you got for me".   He says, "Does that date ring a bell"? I’m like yeah that’s the day of the picnic. When he called my daughter’s mom was around and he said to put him on speaker phone.  He tells her not to make plans for July 6th and told her I was playing the picnic this year! I was like WOW! That’s crazy! Thank you! It was such a pleasant surprise.
I’m so honored to have that opportunity. A Friend of mine said it best; The Chosen Few Picnic is like the Superbowl for us.  I feel like I get to play in the Superbowl!  I’m excited about it. I’m looking forward to it and I’m a bit nervous too but it’s a good nervous! [Laugher]
Black Widow: Have you thought about your set?
Emmaculate: I have but I never pre-plan a set. I call it “Planned Improvisation”.  All Djs have a glossary of blends that they know work.  I’ll usually create a separate crate for a gig and put a collection of records together that I think work for and then wherever it goes…it goes. I’ve learned to just go with the flow and the mood.  You think you are going to approach a set one way and it goes a different way. I have a few different thoughts on how to approach it so you’ll just have to see. I have a diverse musical palette so it will definitely be interesting.
Black Widow: I’m sure! I can’t wait to see what you do!
Emmaculate:  I’m looking forward to it! I’m grateful and humbled that they thought of me. I can’t wait to take it all in and hear the other DJs too! It’s just a great time!
Black Widow:  I agree! There’s nothing like it.  My only advice would be to take that moment in. That moment on that stage…It’s going to be incredible!  Thank you for speaking with me today!
Emmaculate: No doubt!  I definitely will! It’s always a pleasure.
You can catch DJ Emmaculate this year at the Chosen Few Picnic and Festival on July 6th, The Groove Society at Celeste Every Tuesday and the Soulnic Experience at Pier 31 on August 3rd. He will also be at the Amsterdam Dance Event and Mi Casa Holiday this October!!

The greatest and most disappointing Players Weekend nicknames, ranked
Some players hit the nail on the head, and some completely failed at this exercise.
Now that MLB’s Players Weekend jerseys and hats have officially been revealed in advance of the end-of-August celebration, it’s time to start judging people. Lightly, of course, but judging is happening nonetheless.
We’ve already called out the players who decided not to use a nickname at all, since they clearly hate fun. (It’s also possible that the league refused to approve their nickname requests for one reason or the other, but let’s just go with “hates fun” for right now.)
So this is the time to look through the entirety of the league’s nicknames and see who really stepped up to the plate here (baseball puns!) and who struck out looking. Below, the greatest and most awful nicknames from around baseball based on no real rankings system and put in whatever order I thought to put them in while writing this.
Look, it’s only fair that the effort for this post matched the level of the effort players put in choosing their nicknames.
10 Greatest
Carl’s Jr - Carl Edwards Jr. (Cubs)
Edwards Jr. is the only player in the league that was allowed to put a brand name on the back of his jersey. The policy makes sense in that the league can’t have players compromising their sponsorship deals with other companies that could conflict.
If there was one exception that the league was going to make (seeing as they had to approve all of them) we’re glad it was this one.
Who? - Hu (Rays)
This evokes “Who’s On First?” in a big way, which is fun. Too bad Hu is a pitcher and doesn’t actually play first base. It’s a nice joke about the homonymic nature of his name, and hopefully the announcers take advantage of the weekend to make a lot of puns in the booth.
Corey’s Brother - Kyle Seager (Mariners)
Not only did Kyle Seager mock his own relative obscurity when compared to his brother, but he also insulted his sibling in the process of explaining the decision to put his name on his back.
Seager said, in regards to Corey not picking a nickname for the weekend at all,
“He’s boring. You’ve got to do better than that. If you’re going to play that good then you gotta do something.”
For Players Weekend, Kyle is the better Seager sibling. You did this to yourself Corey.
Beef - Welington Castillo (Orioles)
Get it? Like Beef Wellington? Because his name is Welington? He loses a few fake points here because it was already his nickname but it’s a great nickname that makes us laugh so it belongs in the Top 10.
Tokki 2 - Joey Votto (Reds)
Votto’s jersey matches that of the Rangers’ Shin-Soo Choo, who will have “Tokki 1” on his back. You can read the full story of why these two players chose the nicknames they did over at Red Reporter, but if for some reason you don’t have time to make the extra click (just make the extra click) it’s a story of teammate bonding from years ago that has endured until now. Aw, heartwarming teammate friendships are the best.
오승환 - Seung-hwan Oh (Cardinals)
Oh getting to use his native language and put Korean symbols on the back of his jersey is super cool and not something that can happen usually in the league. This is the perfect example of a player not choosing a nickname, but instead using the Players Weekend opportunity to do something unique on the field.
PTBNL - Josh Phegley (A’s)
This is so beautiful. Phegley, who fits the bill of a Player to Be Named Later perfectly as a backup catcher who came to Oakland as a throwaway player in a trade, isn’t afraid to poke fun at himself here and in the process has one of the best nickname jerseys of the weekend. Way to commit, Josh.
Pickles - Sonny Gray (Yankees)
Why did Sonny Gray choose Pickles for his nickname? Nobody seems to know. That makes it better though, as he either just decided that his own nickname was going to be Pickles starting right now or there’s a really good story behind it. Gray just got to New York, way to make an impression.
Knapp Time- Andrew Knapp (Phillies)
If Andrew Knapp’s nickname of “Knapp Time” stems from a situation where he once put someone to sleep in a high school brawl or something, that would be awesome. As it stands, it’s pretty awesome anyway. When your last name works as well as his does for a quick pun, it’s hard not to just go with the obvious choice.
Brotato - Brad Hand (Padres)
This could have gone poorly, but it’s just on the right side of silly frat bro that it works. Brotato is fun to say, and evokes a character from Dazed and Confused or American Pie. Silly? Yes. But the point of the weekend is to be silly for the most part. If Hand wants to let his bro flag fly than more power to him.
10 Most Awful
Just Blaze - Michael Blazek (Brewers)
What? Oh god no. Where Brotato worked in a goofy, innocent frat bro way this one sees that line in the sand and catapults over it without looking back. It’s too obvious a pun (we get it, your nickname is Blazek) and while he’s probably been using that nickname since he was a teenager there definitely could have been more creativity put into this one.
Speedpass - Steve Cishek (Rays)
Why? Just why?
Tommy Two Towel - Tommy Hunter (Rays)
This sounds like Hunter desperately wants to be a part of a Goodfellas remake but couldn’t think of anything better. If he did get cast in such a film, any character with this moniker would absolutely be the first one to tell everyone about a heist and get shot because of it.
King Krol - Ian Krol (Braves)
King K Rool would have been a cool alternative here. Alas, this nickname just reminds me of this scene from How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days.
Fist - Doug Fister (Red Sox)
Fist is just a nickname we’re really about to let happen? Really? Combined with Chris “Stickman” Sale on the same team, and the Red Sox are really cornering the Are You Sure About That One? market.
Mamba - Jonathan Schoop (Orioles)
There’s only one Mamba. One of his teammates should have told him that before he submitted this as his choice.
All Rise - Aaron Judge (Yankees)
There are better judge puns out there Aaron, and you know it. Fans have been yelling them at you all year. You couldn’t have done “Your Honor” or “...Jury, Executioner” or “Dredd”? There were so many other options, and Judge picked the weakest of the many that he had to choose from. He’s being held in contempt for this one.
TK - Ty Kelly (Phillies)
Not only is this just Kelly’s initials, but it also makes it look like he forgot to put a detail in and is waiting for his newspaper editor to fill things in for him.
B-Craw - Brandon Crawford (Giants)
This not only is too simple a nickname, and something that any decent high schooler could come up with for a friend, it also sounds like the nickname for someone who owns a roadside gas station/crawfish shack somewhere. And I wouldn’t trust Brandon Crawford around seafood.
CT3 - Chris Taylor (Dodgers)
This is just too easy. We get it. Your first name starts with C, your last name starts with T, and you wear number 3. Way to be creative. It also doesn’t even get “roll off the tongue” points because Chris Paul’s CP3 nickname is one letter off and he got there first.
