#also just to make a note that this is relation to their soccer ego. when I say that Reo's dream is just to win the world cup i mean that

Tumblr media
This line really puts into perspective the rest of Nagi's character and confirms the theory I've had regarding his dilemma.
The major flaw of Nagi's character is how spoiled he is. Literally. He grew up being a genius and never having to try hard to get what he wants. However, this in turn made him unable to enjoy whatever he did because since it was so easy for him to achieve it, he didn't see a point in it anyways.
When he started soccer, he found it easy so he didn't see any enjoyment in it. Hearing Ego's speech about winning the world cup didn't fire him up because he could imagine himself easily scoring that winning goal.
Tumblr media
This is the reason why Nagi finally got fired up when he lost against Isagi. He experienced the feeling of trying his absolute best and failing anyways. Soccer is not so easy that he can breeze by with little effort at this level. This is what sparked his motivation.
Tumblr media
Now this is all a basic analysis of Nagi's character: in order for Nagi to get motivated, he needs a proper challenge.
Yet after the Manshine match, when Nagi "wins" against Isagi, he lost that fire. Right after, he begins losing. But how? Shouldn't Nagi be fired up again because he is seeing that his skills aren't up to par with the world-standard if he doesn't try hard? Isn't this a proper challenge for him?
Well, let's go back to Nagi getting fired up after losing to Isagi.
Remember, Nagi's flaw is that he is spoiled. Whatever he wants, he gets it, easily. The key here is what he *wants*.
When Reo found Nagi and they started playing soccer together, Nagi found a new thing he wants. He wants to stay by Reo's side.
Tumblr media
I find the wording of this panel interesting. He finds soccer a pain because he has to put a little more effort into the training, although not the matches themselves, and he doesn't want to play soccer anyways. But in doing so, he is also being with Reo, which is what he does want. So basically: needing to try + something he wants = being engaged and/or motivated with the activity. Without his "want," the activity is only a pain.
While Reo's dream is to win the world cup and be the world's best, Nagi's dream is to be the world's best with Reo. He wants to play soccer with Reo. However, up until his loss against Isagi, this had never been challenged. They had won every match so what reason did he have to try in order to get what he wants? He already has Reo by his side. In this case, he didn't have the "needing to try" component of the equation, thus his lack of motivation in the first arc of the manga.
However, when he lost to Isagi, now his dream, his "want", was in jeopardy. He tried his hardest and still lost, proving that this task required his effort. Not only that, but that dream of reaching the top with Reo was no longer guaranteed. It was now a goal he needed to strive for.
Tumblr media
Another factor that plays into this is the circumstances. Nagi had to choose between staying with Reo or teaming up with Isagi and Bachira. In fact, he initially invited Isagi to be with him and Reo, but Isagi refused, forcing Nagi to choose.
This likely contributed to Nagi's mindset of needing to win and get stronger in order to be with him again, to "dream" with him again. It forced Nagi to put in more effort. And he didn't find this a pain because he is doing it to get what he wants. He is trying harder in order to be able to dream with Reo again. Hence his motivation.
Tumblr media
Now flash forward to the Manshine match. Nagi now has to put in more effort than ever because of Chris and Agi's teachings. But as he stated himself, it isn't fun for him. This is where the circumstances come into play as well. Ultimately, Nagi is playing soccer for the sake of being by Reo's side. He isn't playing soccer *for the sake of soccer*.
He's like, the complete opposite of Isagi in this way. Isagi is motivated by his pure desire to win and be better. Soccer itself motivates Isagi. But for Nagi, it is not enough to motivate him that soccer requires effort to win. it needs to be effort + WANT. He believes he needs to be better at soccer in order to be with Reo. His "want" isn't soccer, it's Reo.
But unlike during the Second Selection, Reo is now on the same team as him. So now when he is faced with the effort to try hard, he doesn't challenge himself by the fact that Reo isn't by his side. Unlike before, Reo is like 5 feet away from him. Whereas before he needs to win to see Reo again, now if Nagi wants to see with Reo, he just needs to walk over to Reo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nagi is still chasing after what he wants and he is still putting in effort, but he is no longer being forced to try even harder. Before, his desire to be by Reo's side propelled him forward in situations where this desire is exploited, but now, Reo is right there. All he needs to do is beat Isagi and overcome that obstacle to their dream that had been placed so many chapters ago.
And then... what next?
Does he continue chasing after their dream? Well, they're already at the world's stage. They are experiencing the best of the best. And he has Reo by his side. It's not like he can actually lose Reo at this stage now....right?
Deep down, Nagi had gotten comfortable again. He's fallen into the mindset of believing that Reo will always stay by his side, no matter what he does. This "no matter what" is crucial because that means that even without his effort, his "want" will be achieved. In the equation of Nagi's ego being: needing to try + something he wants = getting fired up, the "needing to try" requirement hasn't been fulfilled.
So what does this mean for Nagi going forward? What does he need to do in order to get truly motivated on a reliable basis?
Um, idfk.
Nagi keeps talking about how he will "get fired up" and he'll finally do it, but we've yet to see him actually do it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing is that Nagi still doesn't understand his ego. He wants to get fired up, but he doesn't understand what he needs to do to get to that point. Everyone else does this by visualizing their ideal, but Nagi doesn't have one. All he wants is to ultimately be with Reo.
First he needs to understand exactly WHY he got fired up before and then recreate those circumstances to do it again.
No matter what happens, I think the ending of this match and Nagi's character will tie back to what Isagi said here

Blue Lock Headcanoas!!
mainly complementary for my ao3 Bastard Truth, but also just thought of them on the way
in no particular order
Tumblr media
Hiori:
he’s a lot harsher and more honest/crude with his roommates Isagi, Kurona and Yukimura than with others
usually very nice and sweet to strangers and new friends, as we can see with his first meeting with Isagi and Nanase, obviously on the soccer field he’s more aggressive, but now that he has found his true purpose and he has gotten comfortable with his friend group, he lets himself much more loose
we’ve already seen that in the manga but he loves talking in gaming terms because our boy is a certified  g a m e r
Tumblr media
Kurona:
falls asleep like a statue with his face to the ceiling, but after falling asleep he will move around a LOT, even accidentally waking himself up sometimes lmao (already mentioned that)
there was one time where he woke everyone up by pushing a lamp down the table, that’s how everyone ended up knowing
no confirmed family, but I like to imagine he has sisters that used to play with his hair (and he also likes to play with his hair since he was small). So they would always end up making braids into it, and he picked up that habit as well
he’s a simple soul but cares a great deal about his friends, and can pick up on small social cues, not as well as Hiori who does it with his analytical mind, but Kurona does it by intuition and it works really well sometimes (sometimes not so)
every joke that comes from his mouth is also a genuine question
in another universe, he would be my cute little pet shark, accompanying me on my daily morning seafish massacres
Yukimura:
Tumblr media
Kaiser:
mentally unstable, sometimes has suicidal thoughts, but strongly suppresses them
takes different medication to function, from mood stabilizers to sleeping pills
if he doesn’t take sleeping pills, he can’t fall asleep as he will just keep repeating his ptsd flashbacks in his head
he doesn’t really like sleeping on the soft mattress that he gets in hotels or initially in the Blue Lock facility, will sometimes end up sleeping on the floor, but he complained about it to Ego and he made him a custom mattress
very tech-inept (usually that’s a fun character quirk, in this case not so much…)
can use basic features of a phone, knows what social media is but barely uses it outside of interviews
likes to read after he learned reading (confirmed canon)
he sometimes thinks about his mom… once in a year maybe. But when he does, he’ll think about her a lot. Every possible scenario. Every what-if. Until he represses all his thoughts for another year
his eyeliner is not just for show. it partly is, but it’s also yet another thing to set himself apart from his dad
he has terrible handwriting, but he has perfected his autograph to a T and it looks so elegant and beautiful you wouldn’t even fathom that his usual writing looks like doctors’ notes
his parents met at the Berlinale
Tumblr media
Isagi:
he really wasn’t trying to hide his injuries very much because when it comes to things outside his expertise, which is soccer and keeping his schedule, he tends to be a bit klutzy
yes, he has metavision and it helps him outside of the soccer field as well, but that’s more for short-term unexpected scenarios
spoiler
Also I was recently looking at Isagi’s profile again and his strengths/weaknesses are very relatable lmao
Strengths: Finding the good in others.
Weakness: Looking too much at other’s expressions.
Tell me that's not a good boy who truly cares about others??? (and then on the soccer field he won't give a f* lmao)
Tumblr media
Noa:
he’s French, but his personality is so stereotypically German omg, according to his wiki he’s been like that since small but I like to imagine that he picked up some habits from his German colleagues
this is fun because now I can imagine all the German stereotypes on him lmao
he doesn’t like being late and he hates it when others are late
he has no sense of humour
he wears socks under sandals
at the beach he reserves seats by putting a towel on them (it’s not part of the rules, but at the beach there are no rules)
he doesn’t necessarily like Japanese polite nature, but he acknowledges its strengths (which is why he was even more surprised when he met Ego with his very untypical crude nature)
more on the way!

The latest chapter of the manga has brought back the true meaning of "Blue Lock."
The stakes are higher and almost everyone is clawing out of their way to make it to the top.
It's a reminiscent of the first and second selection arcs where no one is spared. You like Kira? Too bad because he got eliminated first. Want to see Nagi and Reo teaming up in second selection? Not gonna happen anytime soon as Nagi was walking away with Isagi's team to their next match. Wanna see Naruhaya make it? Having a great backstory and reason to join the program doesn't make you have a plot armor to push through because you don't have enough talent and skill just like with the geniuses and prodigies out there.
And it's the same for Isagi too. He is not immune to any obstacles that he is facing today. It's already foreshadowed by Ego in the previous chapter.
Tumblr media
This is going to happen sooner or later. Also, interesting note is that it's the second time that Isagi had misunderstood someone's true intentions in this match. It happened with Kiyora before when he thought that he was going to pass the ball to him and not with Kaiser. He looked genuinely surprised for a moment. And in the second moment of clarity, he now realized that Noa was using him too to tap and awakened Kaiser to his full potential.
Now how Isagi would react to all of this is the interesting part in the next chapter. I'm seeing theories circulating online that he *might* get a mental breakdown like with Ness, put him into a clearer perspective and made Noa realized that he won't be just a stepping stone for him by doing some crazy but amazing moves once again or him signing up for Dortmund after this match and play against BM in the future (this is the first team who has shown interest to him in this arc. And if I remembered correctly wasn't Dortmund his favorite team back then?)
It's not a farfetched idea for one of these things could happen. But then again, this is Blue Lock we're talking about. Some unpredictable things could be happening soon.
Also, I'm not really mad at Noa. It just showed and proved on why he was the current top one in the franchise. He's a real egoist. You don't just survived and make it to the top by being physically skilled on your own.
I also highly disagree with him not caring about Isagi. He took interest in Isagi because of out the Blue Lock players, he had shown potential the most and he was a proactive player. Isagi doesn't wait for things to be handed out to him. He seeks his opinion and advise on soccer related things.
To your perspective, this was a cold, calculating move from Noa. But in all honesty, Noa had just done what is logically for the best and this is how he could tap out both Isagi and Kaiser's potential and ego.
The author also might be showing that Isagi needs to stop seeing Noa as his idol and mentor.
But rather a rival as well in the same vein as Rin and Kaiser.
Because if you want to become the world's number 1 striker then you have to beat the current world's number 1 and that is Noel Noa himself.
The author cooked in this chapter and I couldn't be any more glad of it 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Fic recs for taehyung? I love your stuff btw I’ve read them all uwu
Tumblr media
As a beacon of extra-ness in an already extra world, I am entirely incapable of just recommending fics like a normal blog. No. I’ve got to wax on like a bloomin connoisseur. I have compiled some (but not all) of my favorite works in several different categories and sorted them accordingly. This crazy list is so long I had to add a “keep reading”... but I simply couldn’t bear to leave any of these off the list. They are all so good!
Fics have been divided into 8 categories. Some are under the cut.
 ▨ FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS and FRIENDS TO LOVERS ▨  ▨ ARRANGED MARRIAGE ▨ ▨ FANTASY ▨ ▨ ANGST WITH A HAPPY ENDING ▨ ▨ HYBRID and ABO (alpha/omega) ▨ ▨ MULTIPLE PARTNERS ▨ ▨ NEIGHBORS AND ROOMMATES ▨ ▨ TABOO THEMES and DARK FIC (Sex Work/Power Imbalance/Very Unsafe Sex) ▨ ▨
▨ FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS and FRIENDS TO LOVERS ▨
Insomnia by @hobiwonder
This is one of those fics I read and literally could not stop thinking about. It is wildly hot and honestly hilarious. Poor reader cannot sleep and the beautiful bro she’s tutoring offers a rather unconventional solution.
(Ego) Hoe Chronicles: KTH by @suga-kookiemonster
Listen. If you find a niche fan blog devoted entirely to Ego Tae... I’m not gonna say it’s mine. But it’s probably mine. I once told suga-kookiemonster that I would literally read a story about Ego Tae going grocery shopping on a Wednesday night and I stand by that. In this lurid romp, the reader falls into the clutches of everyone’s favorite bohemian sex lord and he rails her into another dimension.
Falling, Falling, Gone by @johobi
Pining (mutual or otherwise) is not really my thing, but I would straight up read Jo’s laundry list if she posted it. As usual I was blown away by how everything she does seems somehow better than any other version of it. This reader is really unique as well, and her relationship with the wildly popular soccer star Tae comes to a sexy and hilarious head at a sort of bachelor auction. With sharp dialogue, delightful subtext, and fantastic side characters, you really shouldn’t miss it. It’s pretty much perfect.
A Friendly Favor by @baeseoul
This is the classic “teach me some sex for another woman” trope and it is done so well. Sweet best friend Tae is looking to benefit from your experience, but his is not the only world about to be thouroughly rocked.
Officer Kim and the Criminal Crush by @ddaengyoonmin
This is one of the best twists on childhood friends to lovers I have ever seen. Tae grows up to become a cop and reader grows up to be a societal menace. I won’t spoil it, but it’s the perfect blend of nostalgia, tenderness, and smut. This fic technically doesn’t have a name so I had to give it one to link it. It’s part of an AMAZING series Zoe did that I also highly recommend.
Out of the Blue by @jimlingss
This is one of those stories that blooms throughout the narrative until you are left with this gorgeous flower at the end. I loved the journey of these two characters. It was real and it perfectly captures the experience of finding your soulmate in the person you least expect.
Sin Pijama by @brilliantlybasicb
This fic is a switch culture fic. It is wild wicked hot and this Tae is unreal. I love the way he lets the reader think she is in control just long enough. It is a wild romp with an adorable sequel and honestly you should read it.
Girls Like You by @jjiminah
I was in jjiminah’s asks IMMEDIATELY about this fic because I had FEELINGS. The reader begins wordlessly teasing and tempting Tae on their morning bus ride every day until he is literally losing his mind. Everything that follows is fire. Jjiminah has hinted she will wrote more for these two and I NEED IT.
Sighs and Sonnets by @btsaudge
This fic is beautiful. Like it’s basically art. This is a bad boy who is bad for you. But he has the soul of a poet and the stroke game of a renaissance master. Bittersweet and seductive, this fic is a full experience.
The Text by @taetaesbaebaepsae
Tae is your friend with benefits but it looks like feeling may have been caught by one or more parties. When you attempt to soothe your aching heart with another pretty boy, Tae decides to stake his claim. This was very sexy. The whole fic was sexy.
▨ ARRANGED MARRIAGE ▨
Monster by @neonlights92
Monster and all of its companion series about each of the boys is one of those fics that I reread constantly and also just think about constantly. This is one of the best mafia AUs out there and it’s characters are vivid and unforgettable. Tae’s stubborn resistance to his lovely new wife in contrast with her quiet, clever strength really brings this story to life. A word of warning. The masterlist links are a bit messed up. To read part two you must click on part three. And to read part three must click on part four. The link to part four is at the bottom of part three (or you can just search it on her site. It is definitely all there though).
Dichotomy by @kpopfanfictrash
There is a reason the incomparable Shanna is on this list three times. She is truly incomparable. This is childhood friends-to enemies-to spouses and it is wonderful. I adore this Tae. He is sharp and vulnerable and occasionally heavy handed, but truly a gem. This fic also features one of the best angry sex scenes I’ve ever run my eyeballs across.
▨ FANTASY ▨
Chism by @kpopfanfictrash
The world-building in this story is genuinely awe inspiring. You could write series upon series within this vivid universe. The god of Winter is missing and Summer’s heat burns unchecked for many years. The reader is a warrior with a unique ability tasked with guarding a very interesting prisoner. This story is so good. I mean it is really bloomin incredible. It’s hard to say what I liked best about it, because it was stellar across the board.
Obsidian by @kpopfanfictrash
In the pantheon of delicious Tae incarnations, Obsidian Taehyung is essentially unrivaled as a grey witch who moonlights as a sexy rock star. His extremely erotic clash with a white witch detective plays out as the two of them track down a sinister killer (with the help of some truly memorable side characters).
Out of this World by @ddaengyoonmin
This one is really unique. Tae is a merman scientist on the water planet of Neptune and when the reader and her misguided crew crash into his sea, he takes it upon himself to improve inter-species relations. This fic features excellent world building alongside several twists and surprises. Clever scientist Tae is downright irresistible.
▨ ANGST WITH A HAPPY ENDING ▨
Picking Flowers by @jamaisjoons
So this story is a journey - truly a beautiful one and it’s a gorgeous addition to the hanahaki genre. There is real pain and I cried real tears, but gosh it was so sexy and so worth it. I was surprised by how truly immersed I ended up in this piece. I lost track of everything else. The end is insanely satisfying, but the journey is really what makes this fic unmissable.
Until Yesterday by @jimlingss
This fic destroyed me slowly then slowly put me together again piece by piece. When I say I went through it - I WENT THROUGH IT. The story is loosely based on the movie “The Vow” and it is just fantastic. Beautiful and tender till the last word.
The Foolish Muse by @bibbykins
This is the story of someone who is deeply in love, but knows they deserve better. It is a sexy and evocative work with allusions to mythology that fit seamlessly into the narrative. I think my favorite part is Tae discovering how much the reader meant to him and what choices ultimately lead them to a really delicious conclusion.
Back to You by @ladyartemesia
The last time I did a fic rec list, it got like 700 notes. Ya girl is not makin the same mistake again. I spent hours on this list. My work is comin along for the ride. Kim Taehyung is the love of your life, until one day he disappears without a trace.
Vacancy by @ppersonna
This one is the only idol AU on the list and I normally don’t read those, but Lindy’s work is too good to miss in any setting. I am thrilled I took a look because what I found was a glimpse into a beautiful relationship that weathers and eventually overcomes the challenges of loving in the limelight. There is a LOT of emotional depth and symbolism which really elevates everything about this lovely story. The reader’s internal struggles in the face of her lover’s fame are extremely well done.
▨ HYBRID and ABO ▨ (alpha/omega)
Eye of the Tiger by @opaljm
I am beyond hype about this story which is (very) loosely inspired by Zootopia and features a cocky tiger Taehyung and a fiesty prey hybrid he needs to fake date in order to keep panther Jimin from murdering him. (Tiger Tae got a tad too frisky around Jimin’s mate and now things are dangerously awkward.) This story is already so freakin good. I cannot wait for the rest.
Silver and Blue by @taetaewonderland
What happens when you get on the wrong side of the right werewolf? Very sexy - very crazy times. Chronologically this is the first of the Silver and Blue series which follows barely civilized were-Tae through his courtship and eventually his relationship with the spunky reader. Holla to all my impreg kink homies. This is the fic for you.
Heat Run by @ladyartemesia
As I said before, the last time I did a fic rec list, it got like 700 notes. Ya girl is not makin the same mistake twice. I spent hours on this list. My work is comin along for the ride. Alpha lawyer V is a man of many secrets, but his well ordered reality spirals wildly out of control when he crosses paths with a fiery omega set on saving the world from his wicked ways.
Beautiful Stranger by @interludemoonchild
This was a wild ride from start to finish. Taehyung is a tiger hybrid shifter who escapes from the circus to be close to a veterinary student he bonded with. There is a lot of interesting twists and surprises in this one. I was definitely screaming at the end.
Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell by @jingabitch
A very young wolf hybrid Taehyung adopts you as his pet human when you are just a kid. After Tae leaves to serve in the military he returns to an adult version of his sweet little princess and chaos ensues. Mind the tags for this one folks. It’s excellent, but there are very triggering themes throughout.
▨ MULTIPLE PARTNERS ▨
Level of Restraint by @lemonjoonah
This is not strictly a Tae fic in that he is only one of three major players in this twisted masterpiece. Lemon is the undisputed queen of the surprise twist and this one is truly brilliant. People dropped this fic in the discord calling it the best fan fiction they had ever read and I am not here to argue with them at all. Fair warning, every word - every inch of this fic is sexy and it’s delicious brand of titillation is wrapped around your psyche good and tight by the end.
Four by @luxekook
The quadruplets next door are fueling your very lurid fantasies. It turns out they have some fantasies of their own... You will need water if you read this fic. This is the original patented Kim Taehyung Horny Hive Mind 4D Experience™
▨ NEIGHBORS AND ROOMMATES ▨
The Heat Wave Series by @curly-bangtan
The original story (chapter 1) in this series is definitely famous, but I don’t know how many people have read all 9 chapters and if you haven’t, you are really missing the incredible journey of two very horny idiots stumbling recklessly towards real and amazing love. Everything is set off when the air conditioner breaks and a pair of wild roommates shed their inhibitions along with their clothes.
Flicker by @chimoona
So this fic started out with adorable neighbor dynamics and ended with erotic rope tying. Baby I was ABOUT IT. This was so bloomin hot and also like sweet and tender. Really a sexy and sentimental treasure.
Not Your Typical Flower Shop Story by @jungtaeyoongles
This story goes from “aww” to “WHAT THE-” real quick. Fast paced plot and twist after twist turn the whole flower shop au upside down and then inside out. I can’t say more because spoilers but like - WOW.
▨ TABOO THEMES and DARK FIC ▨ (Sex Work/Power Imbalance/Very Unsafe Sex)
Extracurricular by @ppersonna
One of my favorite professor-student AUs. The reader writes her gorgeous professor a borderline erotic analysis of several major works of art and he feels compelled to discuss it with her privately. Lindy really outdid herself on this one. It is scorchin. Professor Tae is actually really sweet and somehow that just makes the whole thing hotter.
Akrasia by @nitaescence
This is insanely hot. Emphasis on the insane because it’s basically a super erotic romp where you have sex with a man you don’t know (Taehyung) on a crowded public bus. I literally felt my blood pressure going up the longer I read. Whew.
The Client by @jungkookiebus
This one hit me right in the feels. Taehyung is a sweet and lonely man who has a standing Wednesday appointment with an upscale sex worker. As the story progresses, feelings become involved on both sides. When I say I am checking her page thrice daily for part three... This is so engrossing. And this Tae. I just want to hold him.
Daffodil Dreams by @sombreboy
Tread carefully ladies and gents. This story is excellent, but it is easily the darkest fic on the list and, if you choose to read it, please read the trigger warnings carefully. The reader is a psychologist called in to analyze a very dangerous criminal. As their sessions progress, however, several boundaries are crossed.
Obey by @jjkfire
Taehyung is the most feared and ruthless member of the local mafia and you are the world’s most inept escort. You needed a job, but had no real interest in sex work and you’ve managed to fly under the radar as a glorified waitress until Kim Taehyung himself walks into your agency and decides that you’re the only girl he wants. Oh my gosh I loved this story so much. It was downright amazing and there is a surprise at the end that makes everything even sweeter.

England's run down to Southgate, players breaking away from the past
Tumblr media
12:10 PM ETAfter nearly a quarter-century living in England and covering the national team for much of that time, I can tell you that this run to the semifinal feels different. (In a good way, I hasten to add, though obviously that does not mean they will win Euro 2020 because, history shows, they usually do not end up with a trophy.)Make no mistake about it, some things are the same. Few countries, at least among the "bigger" nations," have the ability to go from ecstasy to dejection based on a single result, for example.Win and you will hear pundits and fans -- at least those who make the most noise -- talk about how, deep down, England can beat anyone and how everyone with Three Lions on their shirt is "world class" or, as they like to say, "thereabouts." Lose and they are inept no-hopers at best, a spoiled, ungrateful bunch of disinterested stains on the national character at worse. This is not to say media and supporters in other countries do not get carried away when they excel, or turn into angry villagers with pitchforks and torches when they underperform. They certainly do; it is just that there is not normally the 180-degree turnaround from game to game. But while that part has not changed about England, what has is a lot to do with the man leading the team, Gareth Southgate, and a little to do with the sort of players who comprise his squad. Here are five ways in which this side is different.- Euro 2020 on ESPN: Stream LIVE games, replays (U.S.) - European Soccer Pick 'Em: Compete to win $10,000 - Euro 2020 bracket and fixture schedule
1. Southgate is likeable and humble and normal
England's manager is probably more relatable than any of his seven permanent predecessors. Let's remind ourselves that the list includes a guy who lost his job after saying he believed in reincarnation and that the disabled were being punished for sins in a former life (Glenn Hoddle), a guy who quit out of the blue in a post-game interview at Wembley (Kevin Keegan), a guy who had an affair with an Football Association employee and who was duped by a man dressed as a wealthy Sheikh (Sven Goran Eriksson), a guy who quit because the FA forced him to strip his captain of the armband (Fabio Capello) and a guy who had to leave after a single game because of an undercover sting that saw him talk about "by-passing rules" to register players (Sam Allardyce). Now, there is context and another side to all of the above and none of it means the aforementioned were worse managers than Southgate; in fact, from a purely footballing perspective, most were arguably better. But it does mean that the current England boss has managed to avoid controversy and drama to a degree that others did not. Moreover, he has done it while being humble and earnest, traits that folks find appealing.
2. Southgate is not unduly influenced by the media
Whether it is playing Kieran Trippier at left-back (and not playing Ben Chilwell at all), sticking with Kalvin Phillips in midfield, making Raheem Sterling a fixture or starting Bukayo Saka against Germany, Southgate has made a series of decisions that most might describe as well outside popular wisdom. The same popular wisdom, that is, which compelled previous managers to shoehorn Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and, occasionally, Paul Scholes into the same midfield.Nor does Southgate freak out when performances leave critics unsatisfied, like the 0-0 draw against Scotland or the second half against Czech Republic in the group stage, the latter of which saw England contrive to register 0.0 Expected Goals (which is frankly difficult to do).He has a plan, he sticks to it and he knows that, while short-term he might be judged by how well his teams play (and therefore risk a media battering), long-term he will be judged by how far they advance in tournaments (and, so far, so good).Southgate gets a basic concept that others seem to miss: Club football -- with its 38-game league season -- generally rewards teams that attack and play well, creating more than they concede. Tournament football, on the other hand, is a different animal, where risk-taking is discouraged.France won at the last World Cup by essentially sitting deep, not conceding and waiting for superstars at the other end to do something special. England have not quite gone that far -- and may not, given Philips is no Paul Pogba, Declan Rice is no N'Golo Kante, Sterling is no Antoine Griezmann and there is not a Kylian Mbappe in sight -- but the concept is not dissimilar.Gareth Southgate's approach has resulted in a squad that is at ease in tournament situations. Getty Images
3. England's players look like they want to be there
After most tournament disappointments in past years, the English media would run their inquests about what went wrong. This would be a familiar process. The coach's decisions would be criticised (always) and, usually, there would be a grand theory, sometimes involving an individual scapegoat, like David Beckham in 1998 or David Seaman in 2002 or Wayne Rooney most of the time, and sometimes noting a collective dereliction of duty.Inevitably, another of the sub-themes to come up was whether these players really wanted to wear the Three Lions and whether there were internecine rivalries that ripped the group apart. Eriksson famously remarked how players would eat and hang out with their club teammates, other managers have talked about how players felt "less protected" with England than at club level and others still noted how players felt it was a "chore," given the environment around the national team. And when things went awry, there was, punctual as ever, a story making its way into the national media. Maybe, if England get beaten by Denmark on Wednesday (3 p.m. ET, LIVE on ESPN), the cycle will be repeated.I don't think so, though, because there were none after the World Cup semifinal defeat to Croatia in 2018 and every indication is that, unlike past expeditions, there is no poison in this England camp. Credit for that goes not just to Southgate, but also to this group of players.
4. This group has the right blend of leaders and foot soldiers
2 RelatedThere is no question that, in terms of strength in depth, particularly in attacking positions, this England is as strong as any non-French speaking team in Europe. But there is also humility to the players Southgate has entrusted most over the past few weeks. There are very few alpha male, eyes-on-me, superstar types among the regulars, compared to yesteryear.Rice, Phillips and Jordan Pickford watch the Champions League on TV. The three Man City players are important to their club side without being indispensable, partly because of Pep Guardiola's strong collective ethos, partly because of the talent around them. Mason Mount is not an A-lister yet. Luke Shaw plays for Man United, but has had his share of setbacks. Harry Maguire is a natural leader, but was at Hull City until the age of 24.The one exception is Harry Kane, who has been carrying Tottenham on his back for many years, but in terms of ego and personality, he will not be mistaken for Zlatan Ibrahimovic any time soon. It is a blue-collar team for a blue-collar style of play, with plenty of talent and game-changers rotating in and out from the bench, whether it's Jadon Sancho or Phil Foden or Jack Grealish or Saka. This is not a side built around two or three individuals -- arguably, Kane apart, though even then you saw him go for long stretches with no service and he did not complain -- and that makes it different.
5. Success breeds success and confidence
This also feels different for the simple reason that many of the players know what national-team success looks like. England have reached the semifinals of major tournaments just six times, with Southgate and much of this this squad having done it twice, just like Sir Alf Ramsey and Co. in 1966 and 1968.England had gone more than 20 years without reaching the last four of a competition, before Southgate took them there in Russia. It does not mean the pressure is off, but it is not insignificant, because once a cycle begins, it is hard to slow down.Once you have experience actually achieving something meaningful, it becomes easier to do it again. This England team does not play with swagger, but the players do seem to have a quiet confidence. And that can be even more important.Southgate's England have managed to break the feedback loop of drama and disappointment. Not by necessarily playing better football or by having better players -- at least in terms of the ones who actually make it on to the pitch -- but in the way they carry themselves and the way the environment in the camp projects beyond them.It may not be entirely down to the manager. It may be the players. It may be the fans and the media who, after 18 months of pandemic, are just a little more chilled out and happy and wanting to highlight the positives. It also may or may not be enough to win the Euros, but it is a darn sight different from the past. Another very common question that we get is... how do I choose the right martial art or self-defense program for my child? Sometimes it even comes as a direct request as to who we would recommend in the area where they live. Dai-Shihan Miller has written the following article dealing specifically with these types of questions. Unfortunately, I do not maintain a list of preferred schools around the country that focus on real-world self-defense for children. There are a handful of schools around the world that I am personally affiliated with, but the job of keeping track of what everybody is doing and then setting up a referral system (of people that I would actually send MY own kids to!) would be too daunting at this point. However, there are some very important key points I'd like to offer that every parent should consider when shopping around for classes for a young child - boy or girl. 5 Key Points For Finding The Perfect Child-Safety and Self-Defense Program For Your Child 1) Be Clear on What You Want. Ask yourself, "what exactly are you looking for?" Are you looking for "Susie" to get a black belt and win some trophies, or are you looking for her to learn real-world self-defense tactics that (and this is important) she can use against a bigger kid or adult attacker on the streets today - not in 16th century Japan, China, or Korea? Believe me. The answer to this question will be critically important, because it will determine the answers, or even the necessity, of any other questions or considerations that will follow it. Why? Because we must be crystal clear on the results we want BEFORE we start out on the journey of finding the answers. This is just as true about martial arts and self-defense as it is about the career we choose, the person we marry, or any other life-shattering decision. And, if the decision about child-safety as it relates to your son or daughter is not seen as life-shatteringly important... ...I don't know what is! That being said, you should understand that my focus is on real-world self-defense, not sport karate or the latest fad in "parent-pleasing-cute-kid" activities. This is true whether we're talking about martial arts in general, the Japanese martial art of Ninjutsu and how it relates to child-safety, or self-defense-street-fighting. So, if you're still reading, I'll assume that you're looking for a good, solid self-defense and child-safety program for your child. So... 2) Look for Value - not price. That being said, we all understand that having a cardiologist - a specialist - treat us for a heart problem is going to cost more than to have our family doctor do it, right? We know and accept this because we want a specialist, not a general practitioner. And we know that we're not paying for the diagnosis and treatment, right. We're paying for the extra years of training this person went through... ...to be able to make that diagnosis and save our life! The same is true in the world of martial arts and self-defense training. You can find anyone with a black belt and trained in whatever XYZ martial art to teach your child to do whatever kicks, punches, or martial arts moves of their particular style. You may not find it so easy to locate someone who has the actual practical knowledge and street experience to back up those lessons. The price issue is for you, and you alone. Is it true that you can find schools and instructors teaching good stuff for less, and commercial schools teaching "feel-good" karate for a ton of money? Of course, but... When it comes to your child's self-defense, don't skimp here. Even if money is tight, most parents can easily save an extra $20 dollars or so a month (PER child) by just using the McDonald's money they spend and apply that toward class tuition - not to mention the extra gas, fees, and cost associated with Johnny being in all of those extra activities that won't save his life if he needs to! But more on this later. 3) Look for professionals. It's one thing to have real-world experience and quite another to not act like a thug in a classroom full of children. Your child - any student for that matter - needs a teacher who's focused on the student's progress and skill development, not on his or her own ego-gratification. I know your child is learning to defend his or her self, but that should never be done at the expense of their own safety. Make it a point to arrange to watch a class or two - and not just the beginners. Take note of how the instructors and senior students relate to, and treat one another - both on the mat and off. 4) Don't put this off. It can be difficult doing the leg work, checking out a bunch of schools or instructors, but... remember this. You're not buying a couch or a car. You're buying self-defense lessons for your child. You're buying him the gifts of future safety, happiness, security, and the ability to protect others of their choosing. What I mean is... if this is important to you - really important - if your child is important - then don't look through your calendar book trying to figure out when it will fit into your busy schedule. I hear and see this all the time. "Well," the parent says, "I just don't know how we're going to fit this in between your two soccer teams, swimming, Scouts, and underwater basket-weaving classes." Okay, the last one I made up. But you get the idea. If you wait until you have time, you are also silently hoping that what you fear MIGHT happen, WON'T happen. In essence, you're gambling with your child's safety. So, don't wait. And finally... 5) Don't let your child dictate whether or not she will learn to protect herself. Remember, our kids know little-to-nothing about the world. They don't know what dangers are out there. They barely know about the bullies in school and how far those people are willing to go to get what they want. I talk about this and 9 other mistakes that parents make every day in my book titled, "10 Really Stupid Mistakes..." I know that, as parents, we never want our children to be upset at us or to force them to do something they don't want to do. And yet we do it all the time. We make them clean themselves, eat good food, flush the toilet, learn proper manners, brush their teeth, and even go to school for twelve long years... whether they want to or not. Why? Not because "they" want to or will like it. Because we know it's good for them and will make them grow up to be positive, powerful, and productive people in the world. We didn't give them the option to get those shots when they were babies. Why then, would we give them the option as to whether or not they would learn to be able to stop a mugger, rapist, or bully from harming them? You know what... I don't know either.

It’s one thing when American late-night TV show hosts and online commenters make fun of President Donald Trump. It becomes something completely different — and, frankly, alarming — when world leaders mock the president.
On Thursday, a video leaked showing Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull mimicking Trump’s unique speaking style and exaggerated hand gestures, and stealing his lines: “The Donald and I, we are winning and winning in the polls. We are winning so much! We are winning like we have never won before,” said Turnbull, to raucous laughter from the audience at the Australian Parliament’s annual midwinter ball.
“Not the fake polls,” he continues. “They’re the ones we’re not winning in.”
Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull mocks Trump: 'We are winning in the polls. Not the fake polls...I have this Russian guy...Believe me." http://pic.twitter.com/f3r3MpcYzi
— Keith Boykin (@keithboykin) June 15, 2017
If you watch the video, it is undeniably funny. The prime minister later tried to downplay it, claiming that he was actually making fun of himself, not Trump. “It's a good-humored roast," said Turnbull, according to the BBC. "My speech was affectionately light-hearted."
But even though Turnbull thought his comments were off the record, he was still mocking the US president as a pompous clown in front of a room full of journalists and fellow politicians. When viewed in a wider context, that’s more than a bit unnerving. This is an ally of the United States blatantly demonstrating that he doesn’t take the president seriously.
Ian Bremmer, an American political scientist and president of the global risk-assessment firm Eurasia Group, argues that Turnbull’s charade shows that world leaders think Trump is the “least capable person ever to sit in the office” and are “appalled” that they have to work with him.
Here’s Bremer’s full quote, as told to the Washington Post Thursday night:
In the private conversations I’ve had with heads of states and ministers of foreign relations … they all feel what Turnbull just basically came out and said: This is, by far, the least capable person ever to sit in the office and it’s appalling they have to deal with him. … Even in a country that really needs to have a good relationship with the United States, you’re just not willing to deal with it. Your own ego will say, ‘Screw this guy.’
The Australians have made some blunt and damning comments about Trump before. Back in February, Trump blasted Turnbull over a refugee resettlement agreement during their first phone call, which ended 30 minutes early when Trump hung up. Graham Richardson, a former senior Australian cabinet minister, called the US president’s reaction a “normal Trump tantrum.”
This wouldn’t be as surprising if the comments came from a leader of a country whose relationship isn’t as close as Australia’s is with the US.
As my colleague Zack Beauchamp notes, Australia is an important and reliable ally. The country has fought alongside the US in nearly every major war over the past 100 years, including Vietnam and Iraq, that many other allies were hesitant to support. It’s also an important partner in the coalition fight against ISIS, with several hundred on the ground in the Middle East contributing to the counter-ISIS campaign.
It’s not just Australia mocking Trump, it’s the world.
Trump’s antics have become fodder for a number of politicians around the world.
French President Emmanuel Macron invited American climate change researchers to move to France last week by launching a website called “Make Our Planet Great Again,” an obvious play on Trump’s campaign slogan.
Last month, five Nordic prime ministers reenacted a photo of Trump, the Egyptian president and the Saudi king placing their hands on a glowing orb. Except the Nordic leaders used a soccer ball instead.
Mexico’s former President Vicente Fox mocked Trump’s love of taco bowls (“they are not even Mexican”) and emphasized that Mexico will not pay for a border wall in an profane YouTube video.
Even Russian President Vladimir Putin has trolled Trump. On Thursday, he offered political asylum to fired FBI Director James Comey.
It seems like this is the new normal, and it’s frightening. When world leaders would rather make jokes about Trump than work with him, there are sure to be implications for American foreign policy.
Some of this stems from Trump’s own unpredictability when it comes to foreign policy. Earlier in June, he finally committed the US to coming to the defense of any NATO member nation attacked by Russia after publicly criticizing the alliance for months. When Trump made the decision to withdraw the US from the Paris climate accords, leaders around the world expressed disappointment and frustration.
With the uncertainty of how Trump will respond in any foreign policy situation, world leaders can do little more than make jokes and wait for the next shoe to drop.

If you have no met your canine friend yet as well as he’s sending texts to see if it is possible to obtain together upon short diagnose, don’t be flattered. He’s both equally impulsive in addition to, more likely, trying you being back-up woman when his or her other packages fell by means of.
If you like often the pup and are able to give the dog a chance, in this case respond getting a positive ‘ thank you nevertheless no thanks a lot. ” It is advisable to say this kind of thing:
“It is going to be great to enjoy you, Greg, but We have plans this evening. Love to gathering with a extra notice while. Enjoy your special evening. ”
Put it out there and see how are you affected. A grownup dude who absolutely wants to recognize you will get often the message and acquire you at a distance ahead of time. 4. Text messaging does have an optimistic place in internet dating. Texting can be a superb complement for you to real dating. For instance, may great way so as to clarify plans or develop last minute improvements to the program.
A man do people want a healthy, more mature connection can easily make every power to show you will he’s curious and to quite simply see you instantly. Why? several. If she has a grownup fantastic guy, you are able to kindly purchase him along texting. I will see why perhaps good, reliable, single people love texting. If they sees your overall picture along with profile together with wants to meet up with you, the particular hunter along with him would want to get up on the result: discussion you. This is especially valid of some women I understand. They think chatting 1st just interrupts the routine and will need to skip the unit and/or email.
But No later than this say that again, executing a bunch of texting first can make an naive sense relating to connection. Like a little more, being a phone call at first, it’s your final choice to get over texting treadmill and ask for what you want. So when he is focused on9491 meeting a female for a authentic relationship, he will probably step up.
How would you do that? Just simply say this type of thing if this individual seems to be swept up on sending texts:
“It may be great to listen the modulation of voice connected to all these great written word and email. I’d love a telephone call when you’ve got period. Hope that works for you! 555-1212. ”
OR PERHAPS
“Thanks to get in touch. Allow me to get to know anyone but I find sending text messages isn’t an ideal way. But receiving up with you actually over coffee beans might be; ). ”
So… the bottom line in texting in addition to dating are these claims: use txt messaging sparingly, effectively and, above all, don’t study too much by it. Remember, true and genuine love come about in person, grin to laugh, touch to the touch. Not around the phone or if your computer.
I may LOVE to pick up your sending text messages stories in addition to answer this question about how to really make it work for you though dating or maybe in your marriage. Leave us your responses below.

A man do people want a healthy, more mature connection can easily make every power to show you will he’s curious and to quite simply see you instantly. Why? Mainly because that’s the best way men determine whether they as you. It’s all about how she or he FEELS while he’s to your account, and he is aware of it. Whenever he’s looking for something more than one fun nighttime, a good guy will do exactly what he can to impress you by way of asking you offered, and then use your event.
Texting is usually good for a simple “had a great time” or maybe “sleep well” note after having a nice moment. Or a “looking forward to slurping spaghetti in addition to you Friday. ” Let him know if you are thinking of him / her and valuation him. Make it14972 simple, as well as leave it generally there. If you don’t grab back, proceed.
Here’s what to perform next to ensure you don’t get ensnared on the inappropriate guy again… You can find clear impulses when he IS CERTAINLY into any person… CLICK THIS and see how!

Why I stopped doing Pre-med (my lengthy and candid explanation)
If you know me personally, you might be surprised to hear that I’m not doing pre-med anymore. In fact, this massive pivot happened so quickly and dramatically that I, too, am trying to figure out how my seemingly robust pledge to pursuing a career in medicine toppled like a tower of toothpicks the literal instant I entered college. Surely enough, I dove head first into some intensely angsty rumination sessions to wrangle apart this ugly mystery, and I scraped together a semi-coherent analysis of how this happened to me. Here’s the best explanation I can come up with:
Any good scientist knows that to properly appraise the strength of a scientific theory, you shouldn’t just be scouring for examples to confirm it, but rather scouring for cases to disconfirm it. Looking back into my past, I’ve discovered that I did a whole lot of confirming, and very little disconfirming. All my life, since showing an early propensity for biology, the life sciences, then medicine, I’ve gotten puff after puff of ego boosting encouragements. At a dinner party, people are always asking you what you want to be when you grow up. I’d say medicine, people would nod their heads with recognition, no further questions asked. As a result, I’ve lived my whole life full of self-assurance without self-examination, enjoying the cushiness of people’s approval. Once I established that I was going to be a doctor, everything I saw and all the ways I behaved seemed to fall into place, conveniently fitting the narrative. I’m not squeamish around blood? Pure doctor material! I’m skilled at memorizing anatomy terms? You’re on the right track, Dr. Feng! Soon, it became a self-fulfilling prophecy, where I’d purposely act in ways that would be in character, because future-doctor-Gloria was my identity. When I started having my first doubts about pre-med during the first few months of college, I surprised myself by how flimsy I became when I was confronted by the question: Why do you want to be a doctor? Up until then, I've been going at it with 110% confidence because I liked it, and my liking it made sense to other people. Chemistry class sucked, but I was able to make it through the semester because I told myself that it’s all part of the process. “I want to be a doctor” became a mantra that I’d remind myself time and time again through times of intense stress, but the more I said it, the more unfounded it felt. I reached a point in the year where I would tell myself repeatedly that I was in it for the long haul, but feeling less confident every time I said it. God forbid, if someone asked me “Why?” during those anxious times, I would’ve imploded under the weight of all my existential angst because I literally felt as though I had no good answer. “I want to help people.” Nothing felt more fabricated to me than that weak ass reason, which alone is hardly a justification unique to a career in medicine.
Here are the few pivotal moments and thought trains that poked holes in my confidence for being a doctor. Note: these are explanations, not justifications. If you’re reading this and are still on the track to doctorhood, I will root for you like the aggressive soccer mom you never had. All I ask is that you check in with yourself every once in a while, honestly, so that you know for sure your life is heading in the direction you -- and only you-- truly want.
I tried and failed to get accepted into any of the combined medical programs I’ve applied to last year. Of course, considering the incredibly low acceptance rates to these prestigious programs, the odds were not in my favor, and it’d be foolish to expect acceptances to roll in easily. But this did plant the first seed of doubt in the back of my head that all these admissions officers who turned me down were seeing something in me that I might not have been aware of at the time. I felt as though I’ve poured my heart and soul into the “Why Medicine?” essays, writing with as much candor as I thought was possible. When you’ve laid out all your cards like that and you still get the thumbs down, it’s hard not to think that, just maybe, I’m not as equipped or compatible to be a doctor as I had thought. Maybe this was some kind of sign. This was a fleeting thought that didn’t initially shake my resolve at the time, but it reemerged with a different effect on me once my doubt train started to pick up speed this past year.
All my friends were getting their asses kicked by their computer science classes, but the challenge seemed to make them like it even more. Meanwhile, I was getting my ass beat by my pre-med classes, but my motivation seemed to be way more fragile. I was performing, for the first time, average in my class. While this sounds pretty unremarkable and expected at an elite institution where you’re no longer the big fish in your tiny little pond, it was a major source of frustration and disappointment for me. The fact that this rank-consciousness mattered so much to me, and the fact that so much enjoyment in the subject seemed to evaporate once I realized that I wasn’t the highest performer anymore indicated that I might’ve only enjoyed my pre-med classes in high school because I was good at them. I sat down in my virology class one day after having one of these revelations, looking at the powerpoint slides with almost a different pair of eyes. I have to memorize all the types of RNA and DNA polymerases and the different ways they could stack together DNA crumbs to build a new strand? Why and how is this knowledge important to me? Oh yeah, I need to shove this down my brain so I can regurgitate it onto a sheet of paper next week for a grade. I don’t actually find any of this interesting. What am I even doing here? Something I found even more curious is the fact that I've survived my statistics class second semester, which I thought beat me to a pulp at least as bad as chemistry did, but I liked it even more because of it. In fact, that class even managed to restore in me a modicum of confidence in math, an area I was sure I was going to avoid like the plague in college. In fact, I'm really glad that I took it, as I actually feel like I've learned something valuable and enriching if not directly applicable to my life. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for Neuro and Chem.
I was totally getting high off of the youthful optimism and individualistic spirit of Carpe Diem of the college students around me. After being immersed in all these big-picture-thinking communities at school, or reading 21st century lifestyle design books like the 4-hour workweek or Nassim Taleb’s books, all I could think about was seizing the day and making the most out of the present. I lost some faith in the idea of super-delayed gratification— the idea of enduring a dreary and soul-sucking life now so that you can live a happier and more comfortable future down the line. When I was down in my depths of existential gloom, all I felt I had going for me was the good faith that the future me— Doctor me— would enjoy my life, even though the current me did not. But what a waste of your livelihood would it be, I'd think, to spend the most important decades of your life jumping through hoops while stressed and broke, when you can technically engineer your life such that you can work hard, ride its ups and downs, AND enjoy its fruits now. After all, your life is really just a massive sum of today’s. If you keep living for brighter tomorrows, you’d go through life squandering all the today’s, which are actually all we’ve got, and all we’ll ever get.
I remember just hanging up from a video call with my sister while I was sitting on a couch in the lobby of the Sciences Library, when I entertained this train of thought. I had just won a Hackathon at MIT by randomly deciding to take a leap of faith and flex my creative muscle, and had one of the most novel and eye-opening experiences of my life. I came into touch with (cw: intense self-flattery) the fact that I was an adaptable person with many talents, a person with a creative eye, a knack for playful intellectual thought, a slightly unconventional character, with visions and ambitions that seem a little larger than life sometimes. All of these parts of myself, which I didn’t think fit the qualities of the prototypical pre-med student, felt more to me like diversions and hindrances than assets… which made me sad. Somehow, I thought the competitive straitjacket of pre-medicine and the highly standardized structure of pre-professional training was forcing me into a mold that missed so much of what I liked about myself. Sure, I knew I had characteristics that would make me a good doctor--that hasn't changed about me. But at the time, when I felt like college was just starting to set me off on my personal renaissance, sticking doggedly to the competitive-as-hell premed plan that I no longer felt super passionate about felt pretty damn stifling.
I've begun to realize recently that I actually might also enjoy doing other things besides medicine (whaaaat?). Before college, I'd always choose classes or study the things that aligned with the pre-med path. When selecting my courses for Columbia SHP, for example, I'd only choose to enroll in physiology or biology classes. I had the choice to take other things at the time, but my a priori assumptions were that I simply won’t like what isn’t pre-med related, so I didn’t try them. Before second semester I shrugged and said “what the heck” and enrolled in an economics class, and I also said “what the heck” for applying to work at Kinvolved; my expectations for both were initially quite low, as I was secretly hoping that these would dispel my what-if questions from first semester, as an obvious distaste for them would reassure me that medicine was the way to go. Lo and behold, I was taken off guard by how much I actually enjoyed these experiences. All my life, I’ve never had to make any hard choices between medicine and other appealing alternatives, because I've never given myself one. In essence, closing doors on the other things was a lot easier back when I didn’t have a clue about what was behind those doors. Pre-med has been all I knew, and everything I thought I liked, until college showed me otherwise.
Lastly, the difficulty of my pre-med classes did (and still does) intimidate me. This reason does fall secondary to the first five I’ve just stated, as, I think, if I were really 100% set on being a doctor, I’d be resourceful enough to find ways to tolerate the workload. But having to shoulder a very taxing course load throughout my first semester, while feeling isolated and unsure the entire time, even in the presence of the hundreds of other pre-med students, was not a great feeling. I guess I blame this unsavory experience (and I forgive myself, of course) on the rocky adjustment period of first semester freshman year, and my underestimation of the importance of forming supportive study groups. Can this problem be remedied easily in the future with a little initiative? Of course. But did this nevertheless paint my first semester experience with an extra shiny layer of demotivation and disillusionment, and propel my I-don’t-wanna-do-medical-school-anymore spiral? You betcha.

Equation for ICO’s Expected Funding Level
With an Excel file and industry market map for separating success from failure
I. Setting the Stage
We’re going ever deeper into the ICO space here at The Mission and it’s child publication, Humanizing Tech. What started 6 months ago on The Base Code Fund’s investment into Ethereum as well as various conversations with a few knowledgeable players in the industry, from hedge funds to new ICO practitioners to even some folks building a new exchange, it’s always been our goal to open-source the knowledge and tools that we use.
Today we continue that tradition with a simple, new tool for you to gain at least a little bit of knowledge from.
After doing a number of Google searches and research over the last month, we had yet to come across a simple market map that lists out how many ICOs are in each specific industry vertical. For example, 17 in the finance space, 10 in the protocol layer, 2 in file storage, 3 in crowdfunding, etc.
The goal is to get a sense for what areas are being overpopulated with ICOs and which areas haven’t been touched yet (a lot).
It seems almost like there are parallels between the early internet where you’d have a listicle of hundreds of websites until it got to be too much and search was invented. And then, of course Google + ads = mountains of cash.
So, we started looking at various lists and figured we’d get started with the Smith + Crown, since they are viewed widely as reputable and have already done some curation of their own. We extracted their list into Excel and started running an analysis on it, which is what follows.
Note: please update me in the comments if you have better data you can cite on any of this. Here’s my ICO List Excel File should you want to continue the analysis.
II. ICO Funding Equation
From the data set we extracted there were a total of 200 recent ICOs (i.e., 2017-ish), both currently offering tokens and ones that had closed. I have a feeling Smith + Crown removed the scams and BS ICOs, which is why we don’t see a list of 800 total coins that I’ve read are currently being traded.
Out of these 200 ICOs, only 42 have raised anything meaningful (more than $200K). That means your probability of success if you do everything right technically, market yourself using a standard approach and have a decent team, is 1 in 5. That’s a 20% success rate.
To put this into perspective, a meaningful VC-backed Seed round, on average, is about $1M from PitchBook data. But the success rate, I can tell you from experience, takes much, much longer, requires much more tech and customer traction, and is far, far harder.
So, I’ll take a 1 in 5 probability of funding success any day of the week with far less up front work.
Data Source: http://ift.tt/2gcgVzT as of July 20, 2017
If you look at that graph of successful fundings above (in white), you’ll notice that it’s pretty much a straight line of revenue from $0 to $25M unless you are one of the Big 3 who raised approximately $230M, $150M, and $100M.
So that curve is what you often hear in the startup and VC industry. Everything follows a Power Law curve. That’s the picture above. A few massive winners, and then a bunch of smaller players.
For example, the bottom 42 companies raised $225M in total. That’s the same that the #1 company raised. Crazy, right? It’s also the same if you add #2 and #3 together. Again, about $250M.
So, the #1 company raised about $250M. The #2 and #3 companies together raised about $250M. And the rest of the group (#4 through #45) raised about $250M. Then everyone else raises zero.
So if you raise some type of money, you have a 3 in 45 (or 1 in 15) chance of hitting a home run or grand slam. Call it 5% probability. Still not bad compared to the standard startup / VC funding game.
That’s because of human behavior. We’re lemmings. Like 5-year olds playing soccer, everyone is running around chasing the same ball. It’s the same thing playing out in public company stocks.
The top 5 tech companies together have a $3 trillion market value (Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, Alphabet). Took them decades to get there, but they did it. Compare that to less than $1B market value for these recent ICOs.
The Equation. So now to the fun part, if you’re interested in STEM. The power-law regression line that predicts the amount you’re going to raise on this curve.
The r-squared is about 0.5, which is pretty good because a perfect correlation would be 1 and no correlation would be 0. But, you can tell just by looking at the chart with your eyes that it’s the right fit. (By the way, do you know that this is considered Artificial Intelligence? Yah, kinda funny when you see it like this right? Not so scary.)
y = 2E+09x^-2.369
y is your total capital raised
2E+09 is a shorthand for 2x10⁹ or 2 with 9 zeroes behind it
x^-2.369 is where you input where you think you are going to fall along that 1 through 45 company line. So enter a number, 1 or 2 or 3 etc. That part is up to you based on your confidence of an ICO.
The actual equation predicts a company could raise $2 billion if you follow the curve out up and to the left. As so:
Which means we haven’t seen nothin’ yet for that white line of reality. But it also means that it’s only going to be 1 company who does it. And that means it’s likely going to be a full stack coin, from protocol layer (think HTTP on the web), through transmission layer (think URLs on the web), to enterprise enablement layer (think Facebook’s platform for business ads) to consumer layer (think Snapchat itself).
A tool, raised to the power of a tool, raised to the power of a tool, raised to the power of a tool.
Don’t forget, Ethereum started life as an ICO but it’s also the underlying technology enabling all these other ICOs. Like the backbone of the internet itself that you can invest in directly.
It’s ICO was only $18M if memory serves, but its current market cap is $20B. That’s in only 3 years.
To put that liquid valuation into perspective, AirBnB (the 2nd most highly funded startup of all time behind Uber) is currently only valued at about $30B after a decade.
So an ICO is growing 3x faster than one of the best startups to ever do it for some really technical protocoly something or other that very few understand compared to freaking hotels.
We’re not just in the first inning, we’re still in the first at bat.
III. The Market Map
The next step in any type of analysis like this is to start to identify the types of projects that are successful and compare them to the types that are not. In doing some, we can begin to develop a gut feel for what has a higher probability of success and what doesn’t.
As we look through the 45 companies that have been successful in 2017, a few things become immediately clear:
Protocol stuff is raising the most money. That’s because it’s still early days and the big problems are about building out infrastructure. That’s why EOS (parallel processing and scalability around transaction speed) raised so much so quickly and put them in the #1 spot.
The next big area is platforms. The ole startup platform play. Today, if you’re not a platform, yer nuthin’. So, we’re going to see platforms for everything start to play out. And then, a platform for platforms. Oy. It’s going to get messy.
The last area we’re seeing is the emergence of consumer-based coins. Something directly related to everyday people. It’s very small, and emerging, but as we know from the rest of the tech industry, the consumer side always creates the most value. It’s not the OLED display maker who is gaining all the profits, but rather Apple with the fully integrated iPhone.
I have an idea for one in the consumer space that I think makes a whole ton of sense that we’ve seen play out time and time again. It all comes back to human emotion. In this case, ego. But we’ll wait and see if someone comes up with the idea, the right approach, and executes on it.
Here’s my ICO List Excel File should you want to continue the analysis.
IV. Helping with Marketing ICOs
I spend a bit of my time as an Entrepreneur in Residence at The Mission and one idea we had that we’re still doing customer development on is whether people would be interested in reaching The Mission’s core audience to market their ICO to a totally new section of the millennial population (not the overly technical early adopters who already visit all the forums).
If so, get in touch so we can chat about any problems you’ve been having and whether you see an opportunity for yourself. A bit on our reach:

Egypt vs. Cameroon, 2017 Africa Cup of Nations final preview: Top defensive sides face off for a continental title
Other teams might have had more stars, but Egypt and Cameroon were the two best organized sides at AFCON. They've been rewarded with a place in the final.
The Africa Cup of Nations will crown a new champion on Sunday after two of the continent's most historically successful sides made it all the way to the final in spectacular and somewhat surprising fashion.
Cameroon and Egypt, led by Hugo Broos and Hector Cuper respectively, have eschewed attacking flair over a three-week period where favourites Algeria, Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal have grossly underperformed or eliminated by the tightest margins to defy pre-tournament expectations. The two managers are relatively inexperienced on the continent, a rarity for managers in the final, but history favours Egypt who defeated these same opponents 1-0 in the 2008 final and have won seven of their eight AFCON finals.
Cameroon excels with their top players refusing to show up
This was supposed to be the worst Cameroon side in recent memory, at least on paper, and with Egypt returning to Africa's premier competition for the first time since 2010 following a cascade of unfortunate events that saw them miss three consecutive competitions, no one expected them to make it this far in Gabon. In a competition where the purists and most entertaining sides have fallen by the way side, it's perhaps a little unfair that two of the least exciting teams have the chance to be crowned champions but the very nature of AFCON, and indeed, all cup competitions, is to make oneself hard to beat safely in the knowledge that there are no extra points awarded for attacking verve and breathless derring-do. And following the odds both sides overcame to return to the summit of African football to set up a repeat of the 2008 final, it's hard to begrudge them of their moment in the sun.
For Cameroon, this has been a surprising battle against the odds as they reached their first final since 2008 and got past the quarterfinal for the first time since 2010; interestingly they lost both times to Egypt. Their record in subsequent competitions makes for grim reading: failed to qualify in 2012 and 2013, and finished bottom of the group in 2015 with only two goals scored. After the incredible success of the early noughties that saw them win consecutive AFCONs in 2000 and 2002 as well as Olympic soccer gold at the Sydney Games in 2000, the Indomitable Lions had fallen onto difficult times, directionless and purpose. The golden generation of that era had all-time greats like Samuel Eto'o, Rigobert Song, Carlos Kameni, and a host of household names to call on but the present day Cameroon side was shorn of genuine A-list quality, and to make a bad situation worse, eight regulars elected to make themselves unavailable for the roster.
Liverpool's Joël Matip, Bordeaux's Maxime Poundjé, Marseille's André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Nancy's Guy N'Dy Assembé, Schalke's Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Lille's Ibrahim Amadou, West Brom's Alan Nyom, and first choice goalkeeper Andre Onana, who plies his trade for Ajax, all chose their club careers ahead of representing Cameroon. That left manager Hugo Broos, himself inexperienced at international level, with a huge task on his hands.
The Belgian's roster of 23 had 14 players making their competition debut, with few outside of their homeland giving them a chance of making an impression at the most open AFCON in recent years. Yet the many absentees seem to have done Broos and Cameroon a massive favour, with the Belgian boss eking out a string of impressive performances from his motley crew of inexperienced heads, devoid of the ego and friction that has derailed the national team in years past.
Hugo Broos has proven to be a great hire for Cameroon.
Cameroon are hard to beat and defensively solid with the centre-back pair of Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui and Adolphe Teikeu keeping star-studded Senegalese and Ghanaian attacks at bay. Captain Benjamin Moukandjo has been a leader in midfield and Christian Bassogog has caught the eye with his impressive performances from the right flank. The surprise standout performer has been goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa, cousin of first choice Onana, who has set Gabon alight with a string of important saves, including denying Sadio Mane during the shootout in quarterfinal. The 21-year-old has yet to make a single senior appearance for Gimnàstic Tarragona but like Charles Itandje before him, he continues a rich tradition of Cameroonian goalkeepers with unremarkable club careers who seem to save the best for the national team. It is worth noting that before Thursday's 2-0 victory over Ghana in the semifinals, Guinea-Bissau were the only team Cameroon defeated in regular time in their run to the final.
Egypt defend well and break fast
Egypt themselves haven't been exactly swashbuckling, indeed the major talking point in the buildup to the tournament was how Hector Cuper set his side up to be defensively compact while sacrificing attacking flair at the altar of rearguard solidity. Cuper has repeatedly defended his tactics that all that matters is the result, and when a side goes an entire competition conceding just once, it's hard to argue the end does not justify the means.
Egypt play counter-attacking football, as they soak up pressure for long periods before launching the ball forward to their speedy attackers upfront. This especially suits star man Mohamed Salah to a tee, as well as Kahraba and Mahmoud "Trezeguet" Hassan, all of who use their pace to occupy space behind opponents. It hasn't been pretty to watch -- in fact all of Egypt's games have been snooze-fests -- but it has been an effective strategy bringing out the best in their attacking trio even when the performances look disjointed. The diabolical state of the pitch in Port Gentil, where Egypt played their opening four matches, didn't help matters either, as a newly commissioned arena surprisingly proved unfit for purpose.

44-year-old Essam El-Hadary doesn’t look his age
It's impossible to discuss the Pharaohs' run to the final without acknowledging the importance of their 44-year-old goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary; his collected mien during the latter stages of the penalty shootout against Burkina Faso showed the invaluable advantage that comes with having big-game experience in high stakes encounters. Egypt's failure to make it to the AFCON in recent years meant all but three of the players on the roster had experience in this competition, and with El-Hadary one of the remaining stalwarts, the legendary goalkeeper has rolled back the years to guide his young teammates to the cusp of their country's eighth continental success.
Will either team take a risk?
With two teams set up to play on the counter-attack facing off, it will be incumbent on either side to take the initiative from the off, a strategy which suits neither side. Cameroon appear to be the more creatively impotent of the two sides with central midfielders Sébastien Siani and Arnaud Djoum usually bereft of attacking instincts, leaving the captain Moukandjo to shoulder the creative burden.
Egypt, for their part, are perhaps the most tactically aware side on the continent since Cuper arrived, and their disciplined approach stands them in good stead for this encounter. They are unbeaten in 23 AFCON games, a run that stretches to their 2-1 loss to Algeria in 2004 and with big game experience that saw them defeat Nigeria en route to qualifying, Cuper's side are favourites for a reason.
Projected lineups
Egypt: The Pharaohs play a straightforward 4-3-3 and generally have a settled side, with fit-again Mohammed Elneny the only selection headache facing Cuper. If the Arsenal midfielder is deemed unfit to start a game of this magnitude, expect Ibrahim Salah (no relation to Mohamed) to start in his place. Marwan Mohsen suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in the quarterfinal against Morocco and Kahraba has since edged out Sporting Braga's Ahmed Hassan Koka as the leading striker.
Cameroon: Hugo Broos also deploys a 4-3-3, although his side have taken some time to evolve into a settled team. Having started with Ernest Mabouka at right back in the opener against Burkina Faso, Collins Fai has started in subsequent matches to complete the back four. Moukandjo and Siani have been ever-presents in midfield, with Djoum, Edgar Salli and Georges Mandjeck taking turns to complete the midfield trio. In attack, Vincent Aboubakar has been a surprise if justified omission and Clinton N'Jie since dropped to the bench following disappointing outings in the opening two games. Bassogog provides flair and is the creative outlet down the right wing, with the willing Jack Zoua starting in place of Aboubakar and Ndip Tambe operating from the left side of attack.
