dragon age positivity meme | accepting

i’m going to be answering these in one post for the sake of simplicity and cutting down ooc posts!

my actual favourite quest is paragon of her kind, but i talked about why i love that one here. and yes, i don’t even rly mind the deep roads.

my second favourite is probably the landsmeet, especially taking into account that it has some sub-main quests that are grouped together under the umbrella of preparing for the landsmeet. such as resucing anora, breaking out of fort drakon, and solving the unrest in the alienage. i find returning to the alienage as tabris second to aeducan returning to orzammar, but it’s still very interesting coming back to a place where you grew up with no power, suddenly having power. and regardless of origin the worldbuilding is good, immediately the fact that you’re barred from the alienage upon initially entering denerim tells you a lot about the state of elves in ferelden. the choice at the end isn’t particularly difficult, “slavery is bad” isn’t a controversial opinion even in ferelden and so even the warden i created with the intention of being That Kind of Human couldn’t choose that option, BUT it does make for an emotional choice when playing tabris

as for rescuing anora and breaking out of drakon, i just love the humour in the quest. i never have my warden break out themselves just so i can have the companions bullshit their way in. my personal favourite combination is zevran and oghren, although i do enjoy morrigan-leliana and sten-dog, as well. i think my fave thing about oghren and zev tho is that iirc they’re one of the most successful combinations.

as for the landsmeet itself, it’s not particularly challenging, but i enjoy the variety of options you get and how it changes the game going forward. like, in every game anora is queen for me in some capacity, but beyond that i’ve had a bitter king alistair working with a warden who recruited loghain, loghain and the warden alone, etc. i enjoy the politicking and making an alliance with anora. it’s enjoyable even on replays.

my actual favourite personal quest is cole’s, which i talked about here. instead i’ll talk about iron bull’s b/c i’m glad they committed to what they started in trespasser and i also appreciate how the choice is set up. most of us save the chargers b/c the lot of them stole our hearts in the two scenes they were in, but unlike some other choices in the series choosing the sadder/arguably worse option doesn’t require you to be roleplaying as an evil bastard to choose it.

so like, most games i save the chargers, but my playthrough where i’m playing a practical trevelyan-- she goes with the qunari dreadnought. the chargers were assets, but a qunari alliance could have been more beneficial in the long term. heck, even my inquisitor who saves the chargers feels a lot of guilt about it-- because even if she didn’t know the people on the dreadnought, there were a whole lot of them, and her decision got them killed. she needed to show she cared for her own people first, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t matter.

which contrasts this personal quest for something like... say, fenris’s third one, which don’t get me wrong, is very emotional. but i cannot fathom why a hawke how kept fenris around for all that time and clearly spent time talking to him would just say “yeah you can take him” its just kinda over-the-top cruel. so i am glad when i can roleplay the alternate decisions i ordinarily wouldn’t make.

and i love seeing the quest’s differing effect on bull. he adjusts either way, but one puts him on a path where he’s going to be facing you, one way or another. and he pays the price for that.

i’ve answered this before the last time i reblogged this meme and answered the dalish mage lore from da:i and rivain just. as a whole. i’m going with the lore regarding elvhenan, though, b/c i think the games do a good job of subverting what we were told in da:o and da2 while also explaining how those misconceptions happened. i love going back to the previous games and seeing new angles to the lore and the places where they were building up to it. i love seeing the foreshadowing within inquisition itself.

and i just love how elvhenan is characterised, as a hyper-magic society where reality and dreams aren’t necessarily different things. and where feelings are just as physical as every other aspect of a person. it explains so much about the fade, spirits, solas, it makes even comments like merrill’s-- someone with a pretty nuanced view of spirits-- kind of sad. she calls the fade “another people’s land” not knowing that it was her land, and her people.

while i’m on that spirits in general make me sad. how perception screws with them, and how i think that just further isolates mages. for once i don’t think this is a plot by the chantry, i don’t think they’re lying about how they think spirits are, they’re just wrong to characterise them as they do. but at the same time i don’t think they’d disapprove of the effect is has on mages. it’s cutting them off from potential friendships, and not only that but friendships the templars would have 0 way of regulating given they could potential happen in dreams.

but i’m off-topic. the point is i find the worldbuilding surrounding elvhenan, to be some of bioware’s best. it makes sense, it’s nuanced and varied and doesn’t make elvhen characters wear one single hat. clearly it was a heavily flawed place, but it had a lot of merits and you can see why solas misses it or why cole, upon learning that the veil was never meant to be, feels validated by the idea that he was never wrong to want to be a part of both worlds.

da:i has the best soundtrack in the series and i don’t think this is a controversial opinion. i do love inon sur’s work, and i was a little worried when i heard morris was composing inquisition b/c i found me3′s soundtrack to be overall a step down from me2′s (it lost a lot of what made the mass effect series unique). BUT with inquisition he managed to keep dragon age’s unique sound while also improving upon it. the inquisition theme gives me chills when i start up the game and even while i’m walking around in the field and a few chords play while i’m picking up my 100th elfroot.

but it’s always hard to choose my favourite. it’s honestly a tie between journey to skyhold and the dark solas theme. both of these give me specific solas feelings, the former b/c you have solas entrusting a lot of hope and faith in the inquisitor (it’s esp poignant if by that point you have a burgeoning friendship with him). and b/c it comes off one of the strongest moments in the dragon age series, aka the battle of haven and encounter w/ corypheus. also i love the dawn will come, fite me. and from my inquisitor’s perspective, esp my main inquisitor, thora, this is probably the first time she’s felt like she was worth all this herald talk. even if she doesn’t believe it, the song beginning with a soft, unsure sound and rising to a triumphant end when skyhold is unveiled encapsulates what i love about the inquisitor’s story and my inquisitor’s personal feelings.

dark solas theme i love b/c it conveys so much of the sadness and loneliness of his character. i would talk more about it b/c it makes me so sad i literally can’t listen to it unless i’m writing post-trespasser solas and even then it’s risky. it’s just a good track ok. and it caps off my favourite dlc.

i talked about some banter i love here between bull and solas. i have to admit i have a hard time choosing my favourite in da:i b/c i just love so much of the banter in this game. i always tell myself not to choose solas banter, and i’m going to... choose one solas and one non-solas.

Solas: I do not understand you, Sera. You have no end goal for your organization. Sera: Nobles get rattled, and people get payback. I play in the middle. Solas: Why not go all the way? You see injustice, and you have organized a group to fight it. Don't you want to replace it with something better? Sera: What, just lop off the top? What's that do, except make a new top to frig it all up? Solas: I...forgive me. You are right. You are fine as you are. Sera: You hurt my head sometimes, Solas. Solas: Yes, I have been known to do that.

this banter is great to me (and all the banter leading up to it) b/c it informs so much about both of their characters. solas is trying to help sera, in this string of banter. he’s trying to give advice so that the red jennies could potentially become an organisation that does more than makes little people’s lives better with pranks or the occasional knife in someone’s back. it’s a conversation between two characters who are, in different ways, absolutely sick of the system and have different ways of dealing with it.

solas wants change. sweeping, societal change. sera isn’t sure change will help any, and would prefer the relative stability of a pre-breach world where she knows which way’s up. neither is wrong to deal with it the ways they are, and solas just has to look at the top he lopped off to see that, yes, they grow back just as bad. idk i just love solas and sera a lot and i love seeing what they have in common and how they handle their frustrations differently.

Sera: I don't get it. If you want to change, just change. Why this "fake Warden" rubbish? Blackwall: For one, people wanted me dead. Being someone else kept me breathing. Blackwall: And then, knowing that people thought I was good made it easier. Sera: (Laughs.) You needed them to think you could, so you could think you could! Sera: You're smart, but you're sort of stupid.

i’m picking another sera banter b/c i love her. i love sera b/c she’s smarter than ppl give her credit for, she cuts through why rainier did what he did the same way cole does. their relationship on the whole is very sweet and it was hard choosing one banter. but i appreciate her ability to both love and support thom while also calling him out on his bullshit. the two of them are good for each other and im so glad they’re friends. my only regret is i’ve never seen thom as sera’s best man in wedding art. or sera as blackwall’s for that matter. their friendship needs more love-- actually, sera just needs more love period.

i love this codex entry, describing wisdom (solas’s spirit friend):

When the summoning ritual was complete, the spirit appeared. Both spirits and demons have no gender as we understand it, but this one, much like the rare and dangerous desire demon, presented as female. Although its form was not threatening, the spirit carried itself with a confidence, an awareness, I suppose, that I have seen only in the most powerful of demons.

This spirit of wisdom was polite and courteous. It answered our questions about the Fade, even acknowledging the difficulty when we could not understand what it meant. There was none of the bargaining one normally associates with a summoned creature, save that the spirit sometimes asked us questions as well. Heras shared a mathematical formula he had recently proven, while Etrenne explained her study on magical themes in the Chant of Light, and young Rhys talked a little about his mother.

When we were finished, the spirit thanked us for the conversation and then vanished, although none of us had dismissed it. We soon discovered that the summoning ritual we had devised was critically flawed. The spirit had been under no compulsion to come or remain. All the time it had talked with us, it had stayed of its own volition. Heras was greatly concerned that such a powerful spirit remained free, and has updated the ritual to correct for the weakness in the binding enchantment. I understand his caution, but I also confess that I quite enjoyed the conversation. I am not certain the spirit would have talked so freely had it been shackled at the time.

you can see so much of why they were friends in this codex. the politeness, answering and asking questions, no bargaining just a nice conversation where both parties learn things. and then you find out it never had to show up in the first place, it just wanted to-- and likely would not have been as accommodating had it not been free.

it’s great for informing us on a character we tragically don’t know all that well. and also? it’s incredibly sad when you think about what happens to it, it almost makes you wonder if the mages who ultimately bound and killed it would have had better luck simply asking for its protection. solas says something along those lines, but he also says it prefers remaining in the fade (interesting in itself, given that the chantry pushes the agenda that all spirits want beyond it. contradicted by multiple spirits we’ve met tbh, including cole, who actually quite likes the fade).

this codex is also interesting b/c it tells you some about what mages study and do with their time. and it goes back to what i mentioned previously, w/ chantry attitudes depriving spirits and mages of one another’s company.

anyway i love wisdom and it deserved better.

Full Snow Supermoon 2019

AVE NINHURSAG, Great Mother Earth, provider of sustenance and bringer of all life forms, HEAR US! AVE ENKI, Great Father of the Waters, provider of Wisdom and Protector of Mothers Heart, HEAR US! It’s been a very long time in the coming but as with everything in existence, everything happens when it is ready to occur, the reemergence and restoration of the original Gods and Goddesses has NEVER been as imperative as it is now with everything that is going on in the world! Because of the corruptions, endless wars have been started and maintained even against the better interest of EVERYONE involved on both sides and in the middle! Because of the intentional divisions fabricated by those who fear losing their stranglehold on the human world, many people find themselves being abandoned not only by friends but by their own families! Because of the selfishness and egotism that many self-proclaimed “Religious Leaders” use to keep their “flocks” in line, people are turning away from their Spiritual selves and are becoming so disconnected to the rest of the Multiverse they only know or care to know about instant gratification and getting what they can by whatever means necessary in THIS life because they are convinced that this is the ONLY life they will ever leading, dismissing the reality that we are all Spiritual Beings and that while we will eventually shed this mortal shell, that energy is eternal and will manifest itself in another form down the line!

I am known for saying “what smoke covers, fire destroys” and what it means is that every distraction that is provided that keeps us fighting with each other rather than paying attention to what is actually happening is yet another vehicle that is ushering in our own destruction. This is bad enough but at least with fire you can choose to fan the flame or extinguish it and move on. I am also known for another turn of phrase “the truth is like the Earth buried under the snow” and what that means is that the more “pure” and “innocent” something appears, the less likely people are going to want to disturb it. The problem is that what lies beneath the snow is the source of what is plaguing the human race and until such time as it is uncovered and exposed, it will continue to have the negative influence over the people it has maintained for so long!

“So you want to start a war, in the Age of Icons?”

Yes sir, I most certainly do.

Now before people start getting nervous, let me explain what I mean by that. The kind of war I am talking about involves a “loaded gun” but NOT of the S&W variety, rather this gun is loaded with the information that has been kept from the general population of the world for much too long.

The kind of war I am looking to start is NOT one that brings death but the kind that rekindles LIFE. What I am looking to engage is a War of Words and Spiritual Reawakening. One that is long overdue and absolutely necessary for the survival of the Human race, the Earth and every form of Life in, on, above and below it. A Revolution to reclaim who we are and everything that was stolen away in the name of self-aggrandizement and power over the mortal coil!

They say that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it and when it comes to human history this fact increases exponentially. The truth is that we have all been lied to individually at some point in our lives but as a species, we have been lied to all our lives. We were told that there is only one road, one light, one savior, that his is “the greatest story ever told” but the truth is that is a boldface lie. The reality is that this is a deception people choose to follow because history dictates anyone who strays from that path or outright denies it needs to be destroyed. Oftentimes entire families would be executed and in many cases entire villages were annihilated leaving no trace of the people, culture, Spirituality or anything else. There is only one reason why ANYONE would ever feel the need to act in this extreme - it’s because they are guarding a secret, the likes that would not only cause the collapse of their socially accepted terrorist organization, but the eradication of every bit of their influence the world over.

You see there is more than one way to get a job done and when we are talking MILLENIA long acts of terrorism that include abduction, rape, torture, public humiliation, theft, corruption and murder - just to name a FEW of the charges - it becomes the duty of EVERYONE to stop running and hiding, to stop standing idly by while people are STILL targeted and slaughtered just for existing and take a stand! I am not talking about storming the beaches or even physically attacking a local organization, these are the tactics of those who have for years held the world hostage. Instead what needs to be done is to stop coddling the guilty parties - the ones that make claims that another person is going to THEIR psychosis-created place of cruelty and torture (Hell) just for being gay but out of the other side of their mouths state that the pedophiles THEY created need to be PROTECTED and have gone above and beyond ensuring the children that their well being means NOTHING to them by refusing to cooperate with authorities and instead of excommunicating the heretics CHOOSE to keep them on and HIDE them by moving them from location to location and in some cases even give the ones doing the obstructing PROMOTIONS! Such was the case with Cardinal Law who was moved to the Vatican and given the title of Archpriest of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, the sickest thing about that is many in the Vatican saw him as a VICTIM and not as the PERPETRATOR that he was. Imagine that, rewarding what SHOULD be and actually IS (according to their book) bad behavior manifesting in an act of defiance against their own Deity and a direct violation of the unconditional love and trust that the human children are ingrained with since birth!

These are the people who claim that WE are the ones who need to be “saved”! Well in a manner of speaking they’re right, however, the people we need to be saved from are THEM!

“If history is dead and gone, then how did we get here My God?”

We are where we are because history is NOT dead or gone; in fact, like the Earth after a snowfall; the truth that exists within its annals has simply been covered up by those willing to go to extremes to make sure that it stays frozen and inaccessible to everyone “outside of the inner sanctum” who would physically or socially kill (contrary to popular belief, there ARE fates much worse than death) anyone who tries to expose the lies and corruption for what it is and unmask all those who are guilty of betraying not only the human race, but the Ancients who were willing to give us yet another chance to get it right! We are where we are because the fatal flaw in their tactics was using OUR story to create their own! Twisting OUR information to suit their agenda! The names may have been changed to throw people off, but those who know better can see right through the illusion! This is why we are here, to REMIND those who have forgotten and to help guide those who fear retribution, that the way Home exists within all of us and that NONE of us are evil, no good, trash in need of THEIR “salvation”! If anyone needs to be saved it’s them from themselves!

The kind of shots I am referring to will not shed blood, but they will blow so many holes in the story that has been shoved down all our throats as well as our ancestors throats for so long that their book will be reduced to confetti and used to celebrate the demise of their reign of terror! The greatest impact we will have is NOT in retaliating with violence, but with simply speaking the truth, providing the original texts that they warped to suit their needs and showing the world that there is no reason to be afraid! That just because our aggressors stake claims does NOT mean we are OBLIGATED to believe them, let alone uphold them as though that is our station in existence simply because THEY say so! It is time that we told them that we are done playing their game and pandering to their egos as though we were actually beneath them and required them to tell us what any God is thinking or desires! It’s simply amazing how what they claim their “God” wants is ALWAYS right in line with what benefits THEM the most isn’t it? How unforgivably and blasphemously insulting to any Deity to outright say that it’s “His Will” yet for whatever reason THEY are the ONLY ones who ever receive the message as though this Deity will only hold audience with them because the only interest this Deity has is in giving intrinsic rewards to those whose level of vitriol knows no bounds!

It is time we let it be known that unless ANY Deity comes down from on High to issue such proclamations of implied superiority, whether it’s for an individual or group, that we don’t care what they claim! From one human to another the problem with talking is that ANYONE can do it and make claims that they alone are the messenger of the Gods then proceed to issue the most selfish and self-righteous statements ever conceived! Unlike what they want us to believe, our Deity does NOT favor any one person or group over another generally speaking, that how we are viewed is determined by what we do and why we are doing it. For example the Abrahamic Religions have for 2,000+ years implied that we NEED people to dictate to us what’s what as though only those people are connected to the Deity when the truth is we are ALL connected to the Deity and can pose questions that may or may not be answered directly to Him as well as the Grand Council. We do need to remember that if we do not receive direct answers that it does not mean we are being ignored, sometimes silence IS the answer. Sometimes it can be a resounding “No” and sometimes it can mean that they need a ‘minute’ to ponder the inquiry, whatever the reason, pushing the question rather than respecting the answer is NOT how one demonstrates respect to those who have already done so much for us INCLUDING sticking their necks out to protect us in our hour of need! This kind of arrogance can lead to a very undesirable response!

We will never and should never take it upon ourselves to “substitute” our own answers in place of the Deity, that is what the Catholic Church does and we see how well that has worked out, especially for the children! This is what Islamic State does and we see how well that has worked out, again especially for the children! This is what the Zion state does and we see how well that is working out, you can’t say BOO about Israel or Zionism without being accused of being an anti-Semite anymore even if what was said was not only TRUE but was in NO WAY anti-Semitic! IT IS TIME THESE SELF-RIGHTEOUS HYPOCRITES WERE PUT IN THEIR PLACE IF FOR NO OTHER REASON THE SAFTEY AND WELL BEING OF THE CHILDREN AND THE RESTORATION OF SANITY TO THE WORLD!

Tonight is the night of the Full Snow Supermoon and people may be feeling heightened senses of apprehension, tension, agitation, frustration, stress and even depression. This is not so uncommon; however, the world is in a massively chaotic state and these senses are most likely the result of everything that is going on in the world and not just a lunar reaction. During this energy shift which will last until the Vernal Equinox it is absolutely necessary for people to spend at least a few minutes a day meditating. Even meditating a few times a day when the stress levels get to be really up there. We need to do this so that we keep ourselves focused, our internal energies in balance so as to better counter the external stressors that those who thrive on people needing to be “saved” prey upon. There is nothing more infuriating to someone who prides themselves on manipulating and using a person who’s fallen on hard times to benefit their cult than a person who’s fallen on hard times but has enough sense of self to know when someone is attempting to exploit them and lets them know it!

Now is the time to remember our Ancestors and not only what they were forced to endure - how many of them were mocked, tortured and murdered - but ALSO how many of them persevered and fought to survive against all odds despite everything, giving us the sense of self awareness that we need to NEVER AGAIN allow things such as the Burning Times, Crusades, Inquisition, Papal Bulls such as the ‘Right To Discovery’, the Salem “Witch Trials”, the Dakota 38+2, The Red Holocaust, The Nazi Holocaust (which affected a lot more than just the Jews) or ANYTHING that calls for the viciousness and brutality against ANY person or group JUST for existing not because they actually did anything (all ACTUAL criminals should be prosecuted accordingly) EVER happens again! Now is the time to celebrate Life and reconnect to our Spiritual selves, to raise the vibration and lift ourselves and each other out of the abyss they used every method to keep us in so as to break us, to make us forget who we are and where we came from! NOW IS THE TIME TO TAKE A STAND, HOLD THE LINE AND LET THEM KNOW:

Well, entrepreneurs of America, I have some good news for you: as the owner of your own business, you can contribute to your own solo 401(k) — also known as an individual 401(k) — and the contribution limits are even greater than what a corporate employee would have.

This being said, the solo 401(k) rules can be a little complicated, but thankfully I have put together this guide for you.

Let’s start with the basics.

What Is a Solo 401(k)?

A solo 401(k) plan is a 401(k) for a self-employed individual.

It retains all of the great, tax-saving features of a group 401(k) you would find at a large corporation — but with far less compliance to deal with. This is because most of the compliance involved with group 401(k) plans has to do with fairness among employees, but this obviously isn’t an issue for a self-employed person who will not seek to be unfair against him- or herself.

Solo 401(k) plans come by many other names, including:

Individual 401(k)

Single K

Uni K

Self-Directed 401(k), which is actually a specific kind of solo 401(k) plan that I discuss below

Of course, something as great as a solo 401(k) does come with rules and guidelines that must be followed, so read on.

Solo 401(k) Rules

Who Can Open a Solo 401(k)?

You can open a solo 401(k) if you meet all of the following requirements:

You have self-employment income from your own personal effort. This includes not only small business owners but also those who work for another business as an independent contractor. However, passive investments such as rental real estate income do not count as “income from one’s own personal effort.”

You report this income for tax purposes either through a C corporation, an S corporation, or as a sole proprietorship (whether you have a disregarded LLC does not matter).

Your business, if you have one, has no non-owner “full-time employees.” For these purposes, “full-time employees” mean employees working more than 1,000 hours during the year for your business. Note that if you have, say, one business (Business A) that owns another business (Business B), and while Business A does not have “full-time employees,” Business B does, this could constitute a “controlled group” and would preclude you from opening a solo 401(k) for either of your two businesses. You may, then, have to open a more expensive and compliance-heavy group 401(k) plan. However, it is important to note that while the tax code permits these part-time employees, not all solo 401(k) plans do, so be sure to check with your provider first on their rules.

Can you open a solo 401(k) if you have a full-time job? If you have a W-2 job, and your self-employment income is from a “side hustle,” then you can still open a solo 401(k) as long as the requirements above are met. However, as I discuss below, you have to take into account your contributions to your day job’s 401(k) plan when determining your maximum contribution to your solo 401(k) plan.

Who Can Contribute to a Solo 401(k)?

Business owners and their spouses can contribute to a solo 401(k) plan.

Solo 401(k) Rules for Spouse: It’s important that each individual have their own, separate account. So while ABC Company could have a solo 401(k) plan called ABC Company Solo 401(k) Trust, Spouse A will have an account — say at a bank or brokerage firm — in the name of ABC Company Solo 401(k) Trust solely for his or her benefit, while Spouse B will have an account in the name of ABC Company Solo 401(k) Trust solely for his or her benefit.

Rollovers to a Solo 401(k)

Many small business owners wonder if they can roll a previous retirement plan into their solo 401(k). The answer to this question is generally “yes” with some important caveats below.

These Accounts Can Be Rolled Over to a Solo 401(k):

Traditional, Rollover, or SEP IRA: can be rolled over to solo 401(k)

SIMPLE IRA: can be rolled over to solo 401(k) as long as you have participated in your SIMPLE IRA for at least two years

Former Employer’s Retirement Plan: can be rolled over to solo 401(k); note that you will receive a Form 1099-R but if you rolled over the entire balance correctly, the transaction will not be taxable. Also keep in mind that your former employer’s plan may have rules regarding how soon after you end your employment you may roll over your balance, so be sure to check with your former employer’s plan before attempting a rollover.

Note that indirect rollovers — in which you withdraw money from an old retirement account and then contribute it to your solo 401(k) within 60 days — may be done once every twelve months.

Pro Tip: None of the rollovers described above should be attempted on your own, else you may trigger a taxable event. It’s recommend that you work with a qualified provider to not only set up your solo 401(k) but also help you roll over your previous retirement funds into your new solo 401(k) if you so choose.

These Accounts Cannot Be Rolled Over to a Solo 401(k):

Roth IRA: transfers from Roth IRAs to 401(k) plans are not permitted under the tax code. Note that this does not mean that you cannot use after-tax dollars to fund your solo 401(k); there is, in fact, a Roth solo 401(k) option that I describe later in this guide. Also, a Roth conversion may be done on funds that have been rolled over to your 401(k).

Current Employer’s Retirement Plan: while rolling over your retirement plan you have with your current employer may be permitted under the tax code, it is very unlikely that your current employer’s plan would allow you to do so.

Solo 401(k) Contribution Limits 2019

This is one of the coolest parts of having a solo 401(k) — you can contribute nearly three times as much as you could to a 401(k) through a corporate employer!

Solo 401(k) contributions have two components: the “employee” component (also known as the elective deferral) and the “employer” component (also known as the employer nonelective contribution).

Now, the contribution limits are based on one’s earned income, so before we get into the specifics of the contribution amounts, we first have to discuss what “earned income” means in this context.

Defining “Earned Income”

In order to determine your solo 401(k) contribution limits for the year, you must first know your “earned income.”

If you have a C corporation or an S corporation, your earned income amount is easy to calculate: it’s the W-2 wages that are paid to you during the year by your S corporation. So if you receive wages of $100,000 during the year from your corporation, this $100,000 amount is your earned income.

Now, if you’re a sole proprietor — meaning that you report your business income or loss on Schedule C, which gets attached to your Form 1040 — your earned income is equal to your net earnings from self-employment as reported on Schedule C less one-half of your self-employment taxes paid. This is because you receive a deduction for one-half of your self-employment taxes paid on page 1 of your Form 1040. So if you net $100,000 in your sole proprietorship business for the year, and you owe $14,000 of self-employment tax on this income, your earned income would be $93,000.

Employee Component: Elective Deferral

Now that we’ve defined earned income for contribution limit purposes, we can get into the math.

The first component of solo 401(k) contributions is the elective deferral available to you as your own employee.

For 2019, you can contribute up 100% of your earned income as an employee up to:

$19,000 for those under 50 years of age as of December 31, 2019, or

$25,000 for those 50 years of age or older as of December 31, 2019.

It is important to note that if your self-employment income is a side hustle, and if you contribute to your 401(k) plan through your day job, then you must reduce the employee elective deferral amounts above by any amounts you have contributed to your corporate 401(k) plan through your employer.

What if you contribute more than is allowed? If you make a mistake and contribute more than the allowable amounts, you can withdraw the excess by April 15, 2020, without penalty, though you will still be subject to tax on any earnings on those overcontributions.

Employer Component: Employer Nonelective Contribution

The second component of solo 401(k) contributions is the nonelective contribution available to you as your own employer.

This contribution amount is based on a percentage of your earned income:

Corporation shareholder-owners can contribute up to 25% of their W-2 wages.

Sole proprietors can generally contribute up to 20% of their earned income.

Overall Solo 401(k) Contribution Limit for 2019

The overall 2019 solo 401(k) max contribution limits — after you combine both the employee piece and the employer piece — is $56,000 for those under 50 years of age and $62,000 for those 50 years of age or older.

However, as a C or S corporation owner, you’d have to be paying yourself a salary of around $150,000 before approaching these maximum contribution amounts! And remember, many corporation owners take most of their profits as distributions rather than wages to save on Social Security and Medicare taxes, so you’d realistically be looking at total corporation income before wages north of $300,000 or $400,000 before you have to worry about approaching these limits.

How to Set Up and Start a Solo 401(k)

Opening a solo 401(k) is surprisingly simple, and the fees aren’t terribly onerous either, especially if your needs are simple. Now, a solo 401(k) is not as inexpensive to set up as an IRA —which is typically free unless self-directed — but you still don’t have to break the bank to set up your plan either.

Here’s how to open a solo 401(k):

1. Ensure Your Eligibility.

The first step in setting up your solo 401(k) is making sure that you are, in fact, eligible to do so.

To do so, review the section above called “Who Can Open a Solo 401(k)” and discuss your situation with your tax professional if you’re not sure about your eligibility to start a solo 401(k) plan.

2. Choose Your Solo 401(k) Provider.

The first step in setting up your solo 401(k) then is to choose your solo 401(k) provider, who will set up your documents and adoption agreement.

As you do your research, you will find that there are a wide range of providers at a variety of price points.

In general, your account and investment options will be more limited the less expensive your provider, while more expensive providers offer greater flexibility and more investment options for your account.

See under “Here Are the Best Solo 401(k) Providers” below to learn more.

3. Open Your Account Before Year-End.

A solo 401(k) must be set up before December 31 for which you want to make contributions. So if you want to make 2019 contributions to a solo 401(k), you must set up your solo 401(k) plan on or before December 31, 2019.

This is different than a SEP or IRA, which you can set up after year-end.

Because setting up your account is a process — and because there’s generally a glut of procrastinating business owners who start the process in December — you should start the discussion with a solo 401(k) provider somewhere around October or November at the very latest.

How to Contribute to a Solo 401(k)

Payroll or Lump Sum

When it comes to funding your solo 401(k) plan, you have three options:

Contribute via payroll deductions.

Contribute via lump sum.

Contribute via both payroll deductions and a lump sum.

Every solo 401(k) provider is different, so be sure to understand exactly how you can fund your solo 401(k).

Solo 401(k) Contribution Deadline

Note that the solo 401(k) contribution deadline is the extended due date of your individual tax return (if a sole proprietor) or your business tax return (if your business files its own tax return). Specifically, here are the solo 401(k) contribution deadlines for specific tax situations:

Deadline for solo proprietor who has not extended Form 1040: April 15

Deadline for solo proprietor who has extended Form 1040: October 15

Deadline for S corporation owner who has not extended Form 1120S: March 15

Deadline for S corporation owner who has extended Form 1120S: September 15

Deadline for C corporation owner who has not extended Form 1120: October 15

So if you’re making solo 401(k) contributions, be sure to keep in mind the deadlines above.

Rolling Into a Solo 401(k)

As mentioned above, your solo 401(k) can accept tax-free rollovers from certain qualified retirement plans, including traditional IRAs, SEP IRAs, former employers’ 401(k)s, and more.

Rollover funds go to a pre-tax portion of your solo 401(k).

Note that rolled-over funds are not subject to the contribution limits or deadlines mentioned earlier in this article; you can roll over any amount of qualified funds into your solo 401(k) this year and still make your normal contributions by the deadlines stated above.
