A MAJOR CELEBRATION - HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

I’m a bit late on this, but it’s here! This is not only my anniversary piece, but my love letter to both the game and the community as a whole. I wanted to include as many grumpuses as I could, and I got way more than I ever thought I would ever draw lol. There was a point where I just had to stop or else I would be in muppet purgatory forever, but I really tried to get as many as I could.

Bugsnax as a game was something I didn’t expect to hit me on such a personal level. It truly was a game I fell deeply in love with for being inspirational, emotional, and creative. Because of that, it kicked a nasty art burn out phase I got right after graduating college, and made me pick up my tablet again. My art drive has been so strong, I’ve made more pieces this year alone than the last 2-3 years combined, and that’s saying something. I’ve improved so much too, it’s crazy looking back at what I was making at the start of the year to now.

This game had me so invested, that the moment I finished it, I went online and found so many other people who were also super into it. I actually wanted to push my comfort zone and put myself out there. I wanted to meet people, get involved in the community, talk to the artists I ended up looking up to as I discovered them through the tags. It’s such a surreal experience, because it actually happened! So many of these people are incredibly kind and talented, I feel honored to have made friends with so many of them, and have created some amazing friendships with them too.

Because of all this, it really made me put my year into perspective. 2021 was not an easy year for me personally. There are people out there in the community who mean so much to me...it makes me really appreciate them so much, and I have nothing but gratitude. There’s plenty of personal stuff I rather not get into, but if it were not for me taking the steps to put myself out there, meet people, and have people that genuinely support me as I support them, I literally don’t know where I’d be without them. You guys made and continue to make my year a very special one. I literally can’t thank you all enough, you all have my deepest gratitude.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you guys for the incredible year; and thanks Young Horses for the amazing game that kick started this whole thing.

PHEW, WOW, THAT’S A LOT OF GUYS

Fun Facts:

- The total number of Grumpuses is 87. 73 of them being OCs and the other 14 are the main cast.

- If you noticed, I tried grouping a lot of these guys with certain themes and have it make sense for them to hang out with each other (kind of). I tried my hardest to keep it consistent, but there may be a few stray guys cause it would ruin the sort of even looking set up if I changed where they were.

-Obviously, some of the interactions and pairings are more or less little nods to other people’s connections with each other, whether it’s personal friends or people really liking their ocs together.

- I had to save out 5 different versions of this project because I had the time lapse running the whole time. The files were becoming so big, saving/opening the file became a struggle. Between the 5 files w/the time lapse recordings, the total file sizes ended up being 15.3 GB.

- The clean, final version of the project w/out the time lapse and still retains all the original layers is 172 MB.

- I started this project on November 6th, 2021 & finished it on December 2nd 2021 (That’s about 3 and half weeks, or about 26 consecutive days. No, I did not take a single day off working on this; and don’t worry, I took care of myself and had people check up on me just in case I was found lying on the floor family guy style)

- I haven’t done a large scale project like this since Dungeons and Grumpuses which was all the way back in March of 2021, so that tells ya how much I’ve grown and improved over the last couple of months.

- I have been told several times that I was crazy and was gonna die during this project, and I did several times lmao.

life journey so far:

Ia grew up alongside their twin, Adina, in a village of Pasamani near Nevinon. 

Their childhood was spent being yelled at, ignored and constantly silenced, as well as made to work on the family farm. They grew up around a lot of siblings, 11 of them in fact (counting Adina), however the pair kept to themselves mostly, generally ostracised by the children for being a product of an affair.

As a child Ia was curious and social,trying to make friends wherever they went.

Their biological father would visit them every now and again, focusing more on honing their musical talents than giving emotional care. Their father encouraged experimentation and expression over rigid rules and his company gave them belief that there is life outside of the abusive home they were being brought up in. Their father’s stories about his travels intrigued them and they had decided to take up the lifestyle from an early age.

Ia was often considered lazy and to be of little worth as a worker by their caretakers, however their actions came from their complete disinterest in the tasks they were expected to perform, rather spending their days exploring or making noise.

At the age of 11, word of their biological father’s passing got to them and Ia was left heartbroken and confused, unsure of how to deal with these emotions and not getting any outside comfort. The year after that they don’t remember. 

At around 14, their mother suggested they marry the merchant’s son and they complied, thinking anything would be better than what they had thus far. The marriage was arranged to be on their 16th birthday. The only issue with the affair was that Ia hadn’t been going through puberty as was expected and at 15 they still hadn’t had their period. This frustrated their mother, seeing as she counted on the marriage to bring in money for the family as well as getting rid of at least one mouth to feed. So she took them to Nevinon to see a physician about it. After a bit of rummaging around their lower abdomen (which is how they got the horizontal scar on their lower belly), the physician found they lacked ovaries. This did not sit well with their mother and in a fit of rage attacked them with a pair of surgical scissors (which is how they got the chest scar. The physician managed to fight the woman off and throw her out of his practice. The physician and his wife took care of Ia for the next six months.

They met Vedra, Mete and the band at 15 on one of their expeditions into Nevinon. They clicked with them momentarily and on an impulse they decided to leave the physician and his wife in favour of going traveling with them. The consequence to this is that they lost Adina and it took them many years to reconnect. (You’ll be able to read more about Adina once I make their about post)

Vedra helped Ia get back out of their shell, her passion for life and helping others, as well as her general competence as a group leader did wonders for them. She worked hard to help them relearn the behaviours they were shunned for in their childhood home and much like their father, encouraged their experimentation even outside of her own understanding. They developed an unbreakable bond and are often described as platonic soulmates. 

During this time, Ia developed a romantic and sexual relationship with Mete. This was truly a relationship only in their head, seeing as Mete never admitted publicly their involvement.

Their relationship was pretty toxic but Ia’s low self confidence stopped them from realising the future repercussions. This went on for about a year and when they were 17 (and he was 20), Mete ran away with half of the band, taking a good chunk of their money. The band soon fell apart.

Ia and Vedra continued to travel as a pair, collaborating with whoever was willing, hoping to change the world one politically conscious song at a time.

This went on for a couple years - most of their early twenties. During this time, Ia struggled to form meaningful romantic relationships with people and relied heavily on sex as a means to survive.

When they were 23, the word of Vedra’s father falling ill reached them and she decided to go out on good terms with him. Ia followed her back to Vesuvia, unsure of what they would do without her. 

They settled in the Temple District, working odd jobs to survive as well as continuing their creative journey.

extremely fun fact for people who think ‘popularity’ is important to me: i would 100% rather have 10 people who regularly comment, reblog my fics with tags and interact with me than 100 people who read my fic and either leave a like or simply move on. i think this is true for the VAST MAJORITY of writers tbh. i’m glad that people think i am a ‘popular’ blog (i am not in the grand scheme of things, one of my ex-best friends used to run a kpop reader insert blog with like 30,000 followers) bc it gives me an ego boost lmao, but i really just want people to read and enjoy the stuff i write!!!

Now im not gonna say 'dont feel bad pls' bc I know that's not really useful but what I do think is useful is just discussing why that anon and many others feel the need to respond that way. As someone who follows a lot of writing blogs myself and have done for a long time, i've seen my handful of favourite writers come and go for different reasons, lose motivation for a while, gain motivation for a while, go from multi to single fandom, or single fandom to multi. Often times as a reader it can be upsetting when things change but it's also important as a reader to understand that some things aren't in anyone's control, I can't control what my favourite writers become a fan of or lose interest of, I can't control things in their personal lives that may motivate or demotivate them to write, but what I can do is support them as long as they're active, and if they move on to do things i'm no longer interested in or i'm the one that changed interests, rather than being upset that they're evolving to do other things or that they're not evolving with me, I think it's important that I still feel thankful for the works that I enjoyed while we were still on the same page and this is how I personally deal with those negative feelings. I think the anons that lash out at you probably just dont know what to do with themselves, maybe they got attached to your works while you were still only a jjba blog and now that you're evolving they're upset, while I understand how they feel, they're going the completely wrong way about it. I've learned to take these things and turn them into something positive for myself or at least something bittersweet that I can move on from but the anons that lash out at you for whatever reason probably haven't learned this yet. Maybe it's because i've moved on and changed interests a lot myself that I know how these things go for both writers and readers but those anons maybe haven't experienced this as much so they dont know what to do with themselves other than complain that you've changed and throw insults at you in an attempt to get you to revert back. None of this is because of the quality of your writing like they want you to believe, it's literally just because you've evolved and while some of your old followers might not like the new content for no reason other than it not being their cup of tea, it's definitely not regressed at all. You are pumping out a lot of content right now but every single thing i've read has just been better than the last. Things that really stand out to me is how well you get characterisation down to a T and all of your dialogue is just on point and from the pov of a reader I think those things seem the hardest to get right so I am such a huge fan of your stuff at the moment and I can tell you're really putting so much thought and care into each and every fic no matter how fast you're producing it, I think the fact that you're also proud of what you're writing at the moment really shines through as well and I just adore the passion that radiates from every completed request as well as in the responses for the subsequent thirsts resulting from these works that appear in your ask box later (I know i've sent quite a few by now~)

Just to be clear i'm not defending those anons in any way, while I can understand what they might be feeling/why they're reacting in the way they are I still believe it's just so immature to be hateful online point blank. Even during a time where I still got upset with writers if they started doing something else I still never targeted that negativity directly to the writer and sending rude or hateful comments whether on anon or not never something i'd stooped low enough to do even when I still had an immature way of thinking, however, I hope that it might make it a little easier to brush them off if we try and understand what they're really upset about, and that they're just putting the blame for their negative feelings onto the wrong thing rather than coming to terms with change themselves.

hello anon!! i appreciate the long message. i do feel bad for people who have no interest in what i’m currently producing and i get that they feel upset about it; i’ve watched a lot of fellow jojo writers move on completely or just stop posting, honestly. this kind of thing is why i was so intense about asking people if it would be better if i made a separate blog but the resounding answer seemed to be ‘i’m just vibing with whatever happens and i’ll block tags as needed’. 

i often return to works by my favourite reader-insert writers who no longer write for the fandoms i like (and i read stuff bc it sounds interesting or i trust the person who writes it), but change can be difficult and i guess at this point i’ve - whether u like me or not lmao - been a fixture in jojo reader-insert tumblr for a While so it’s probably kind of jarring.

honestly my idea of ‘short content’ is still over 1k words, i’m not good at reeling myself in! i guess it’s bc they see like, 1.5k jojo fic versus 5k jjk fic but it’s not that i didn’t enjoy the first fic, just that the point and the story came a lot quicker and so did the natural end! thank you anon, i appreciate you ;_;

Practical Tips on getting your fics out there!

I’ve gotten an influx of these types of questions here recently, and the more i thought about what i was gonna add, it became really long :(  

disclaimer: a lot of the things i bring up are just from personal experience as a writer on this site, what my followers have told me they appreciate, and what i tend to look for when im looking for fics to read! If you don’t like these tips then pls move on :) 

although i’ll mention them, i’m also not going to be focusing on cliche tips like “write for yourself” or “grammar issues” cause those are pretty obvious!

1. accessibility of your blog 

when you’re trying to get your name out there, make sure that you’re creating an inviting experience for any potential followers! this includes:

a memorable url! be creative!

have some fun designing your blog’s aesthetic! (i love cute blogs because it reflects a bit of the writer’s personality), and (i prefer blogs with white backgrounds because it’s easier to look through/read, say, in contrast to a pitch black one where the words need to be white!) 

put your masterlist link in your bio (even better if you can link most recent fic! found this most helpful when i revisit authors that i like and can easily see if they’ve updated or not)

an organized and easy-to-navigate masterlist (personally, i prefer masterlists organized by band, instead of types of fics ie. i hate when i have to choose between drabbles, oneshots, and series masterlists; i really prefer to see them altogether!) --> see section 3 

organized tags (if you’re going to be posting a lot of non-fic-related content like pictures or videos, tag them properly so followers can sort through and find your fics easily!), or (if you’re going to be writing in different mediums like drabbles, or answering asks, make sure to use a unified #mine or #writing or #fics to centralize your content) 

2. get your name out there!

write write write! once you have some fics that show your talent, don’t be shy! 

join writing groups: when i first started out, I joined a bunch of groups that would reblog my fics in the midst of the content of much bigger writers; these blogs developed a following, and as a result of my content mixing in with bigger blogs’ content, so did my own tumblr! there’s been a stigma recently with these groups, but im sure you can find one thats supportive and not clique-y! 

send your fics to rec pages: what’s the harm? the only bad thing that can happen is that they ignore you! who cares! get out there! 

if you can do the above, i really encourage you to ask your fave writers for advice/to read your fic: again, the worst that can happen is that they say no or don’t respond or don’t have enough time, but it’ll be a good opportunity to get some feedback! i for one read (or try to read) every single rec that falls into my inbox. if i like it, i’ll #rec it, and if i don’t, unless the writer asks me for feedback, i move on!! 

utilize your tags!!: i’m not entirely sure if this is still the same or not, but from my memory, it’s the first 3-5 tags that matter the most? so utilize them well; push back the tags that aren’t really relevant (ie. #writing, #fics) and push more the main subject line of what you wrote (ie. jungkook fluff, bts smut, namjoon angst). these will populate your fics into the tags better!

headers!: when i’m scrolling through an infinite page of fics, the headers catch my eye the most; try being creative! you can find a lot of info out there on how to make ur headers super aesthetic, but i can share my tips too! --> see section 3

3. your masterlist 

here are some practical tips! 

organize by band, not type of fic/member/centralize your masterlist: i went onto a blog recently and clicked their bio mlist link to find a page full of 20~ish “JUNGKOOK MASTERLIST”/ “JAEHYUN MASTERLIST” and when i clicked on each one, they only had like 2 or 3 fics per member. i think it would’ve been better if she’d centralized all her fics! that keeps whoever is looking interested and more likely to click on another fic while browsing

add info about the fics!: when scrolling through a masterlist, it’s easy to get lost; try to add some snippets of info (ie. a short sentence you liked from the fic, a quick summary, a description of the au/scenario, or even a header!) this all gives some info about the fics you have tagged! 

headers: this isn’t a requirement, but i personally love a good header on fics i read and i love making them myself as i finish up a fic and get ready to upload it; here are free sources: unsplash for HQ stock pics, crop/edit/filter in VSCO, and then add aesthetic script with fontcandy) 

try to fill it up!: after i visit a blog after reading one good fic, i usually browse through their mlist to see if there are any more that i’d be interested in. if there’s a lot to look forward to, i’ll almost always follow; try to write as much as you can in the first few months to try and fill up your mlist and give blog viewers a reason to visit your blog again, follow, or even reblog your content!) 

4. try not to reproduce cliche fics: 

honestly tumblr’s writing community (and armys) has grown insanely these past few years and, unfortunately, even from my perspective, in the past 3-4 years, all the writers have sort of become blended together in my brain. but, i can say that the ones who consistently stand out are the ones who produce consistent content and think outside of the box! 

i tend to gravitate towards fics that have really interesting plotlines (ex. btssavedmylifeblr’s VOID is always a surprise to read because it’s sO unique! i usually don’t read ot7 fics but this one is legit my fave) 

I know it’s tempting to try and just write typical smut fics to try and gain some traction, but tumblr is already too overloaded by that kind of content; try to write something that’s special and unique! this will set u apart from the thousands of other writers here --> see next section

5. create unique fics: 

this is also personal to my writing style, but i get so bored writing just casual fics about the members, and it affects the fics i choose to read too; i prefer unique fics which you can achieve through: 

circumstance/au: create a fun au!; don’t just create an arranged marriage, create an arranged marriage in joseon dynasty, or between a werewolf and a hunter! (shameless self plug); don’t just give me friends to lovers, but give me spiderman!jungkook friends to lovers! (ie. cupofteaguk’s exchanges)

jobs: give them out-of-the-ordinary jobs; don’t just give me enemies to lovers, but give me rival!anchors who end up loving eachother! (ie. jimlingss The Newscasters)

fun dialogue: create good back-and-forth, (something i’m still working on!)! this will help your characters develop personality, and that way, readers will start to develop that themselves as well (ie. dad!yoongi from insemination wars by prolixitae is such a specific character that i love so much!, or obiwrites’ garden characters were so memorable!)

create memorable personalities: don’t give me a flat character, try to develop 4d personalities in all of your characters! (im still working on this too!) this way you can really make an impression on your followers! a great way to practice/recognize this is: “Ask my Character.” Can your followers ask a specific character a specific question, and would you be able to deliver an answer that is very specific to that character’s tone/voice/personality? If yes, then ur doing well! If not, try to think of ways that you can make tht specific character from a specific story, really unique and separate from your other characters.

6. some practical writing tips

be yourself, write for your own pleasure, blah blah blah; yeah you know already haha but here are a few more practical tips! 

grammar check: if you can, try and hone your grammar! makes for an easier read 

write like you: i personally LOVE this by obiwrites, but even the way she writes exudes her personality and is so specific; try not to be caught up in adding hundreds of synonyms and exquisite language; in fact, simpling it down and being more concise and honest with your writing is better than a superfluous sentence; this will also give ur characters so much more dimension and funk

use those commas/sentence variation: try to use more commas; this will feel like you’re the narrator to your own story; it also makes it more fluid to read in my opinion, over those short. clipped. sentences. (ie. “he came over, sitting down on the corner of your bed with an expression you’d never seen before” over “he walked over. he sat down, looking sad.”) 

half-half dialogue/narration: a fic with too much dialogue can get confusing, and a fic with too much narration can get dry; try to balance them out, and weave in and out of each! 

quality over quantity: don’t feel burdened to write a 30k word fic. in fact, i think some of the shorter fics (ie. any of versigny’s stuff) made a bigger impression on me over the longer fics because they were short, left me wanting more, and were just so high-quality in such small quantities. try out your hand at drabbles and one-shots, and don’t feel too burdened to try and develop a series right off the bat! 

abandon pigeon-holes: i’m guilty of this; i start series and then end up with no vision for the stories and they end up giving me writers block. its okay. just stop or discontinue them or leave them on a hiatus; it’s okay. your priority is yourself, and if abandoning certain works are part of that, then go ahead. it’ll help you progress more. 

and finally.......

Version you speak or questions how tumblr might be romanticizing them theres always annoying people in the replies saying that theres a version where she wanders down the underworld herself, or that the version where shes kidnapped is...weak or a damsel in distress since it doesnt fit into tumblrs made idea of empowerment?? Its so annoying honestly. I saw this kind of stuff in a lot of posts while exploring the greek myth tag and its just... infuriating. I definitely should ignore them but it seriously makes me kind of sad and angry at the same time? The hades and persephone posts are everything(mostly tumblr-fad!) Version I reread your original post and yes I do agree, tumblr-fad! Persephone does take away a lot of the complexities and archetypes I read you examine. I think Hadestown might portray Hades and Persephone's power struggle well, it doesnt completely ignore the implications its giving off for the sake of some romance. This is what tumblr is doing and it's really annoying. By doing this and reducing the characters here to simple boxes it's taking away your interest in the myth, I think that's what you meant? I think your study of Hades/the underworld being Persephones self, cthonic meaning "spirit of nature within, inner self" while I dont fully understand that's really cool. I especially dislike how woobified and depowered he usually is in the tumblr-fad! Theres a lot you can work with him as the antagonist in a retelling I think. In fact maybe itd be great to have a retelling that explores the power struggle between Hades and Persephone and shows how Persephone gets through adversity and becomes of equal power through oppressive authority? Thatd be really cool. Tumblr-fad! Version is the twilight of myths but kind of the opposite. In twilight, the author itself romanticizes the creepiness and power struggle that might be there between Edward itself(although Bella does have a lot of agency so I think that's why it resonated so much with female readers?) while the Persephone has a various amount of versions, most versions being she was kidnapped/abduction with many meanings and metaphors and allegories to things, and tumblr-fad! Version ignores nuance in favor of their ships. Thanks for being so open and honest about this, I honestly was stressed because I thought my response maybe being immature or uninformed might be irritating or annoying. I haven't been sneaking through your blog or anything like that, I just saw your original post in the goddess demeter tag so I searched up "Persephone" on your stuff since I was curious with what else you might have to say about it. I wish Tumblr could maybe bother to learn something called not everything is entirely not THIS thing or the OTHER and maybe do something different from what Hades and Persephone coming to be known as the peak of all love stories on the website.

I think I’m starting to understand what you’re getting at regarding the perception of victims as “weak,” and it makes a lot of sense. Thank you for clarifying regarding the “damsel in distress” trope because that’s when it clicked for me what you were talking about. I actually agree on that point, I think there is a tendency for pop feminism to kind of portray more vulnerable, sensitive or fragile women as less feminist, so I can see how you’re applying that to your views on how people on tumblr perceive the story of Hades and Persephone.

That said, I think you have a lot of different angles you’re looking at this whole thing from, and that’s great! However I think there’s so many subjects you are trying to tackle here that it seems like you are kind of are only half informed about, maybe from exploring discussions online. I think this is resulting in conclusions that are kind of confused and lacking in more solid foundations, if that makes sense. I think maybe you might benefit from exploring each element further on their own merits.

For example, did you know that there are a lot of different feminist viewpoints on Twilight itself? And not all feminists completely condemn it? In my opinion, there are a lot of things about Twilight to criticize, however there was a distinct element of hatred for the interests and desires of teenage girls involved with how people responded en masse to the Twilight phenomenon. I don’t think you were old enough to be directly familiar with all this at the time. I think a decent primer would be this video from Lindsay Ellis (tho please keep in mind that some of her most recent content is not for younger audiences). It doesn’t cover all angles of the topic, but it does give an alternative perspective in retrospect about the raging Twilight hate that swept through pop culture for a long time:

Also, there is a whole conversation to be had about the concept of “woobification,” and why that word exists, as well as how it is used in conversations about girls and women’s fantasies. The original post I made shows that I have my own frustrations when male villains and darker archetypes are whittled down to something seemingly non-threatening and “socially acceptable” myself (like...turning the beast into the prince in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast), but in my experience, people have often used the word “woobie” to describe any explorations of the vulnerability of these types of male characters when women do so because they find those men intriguing or attractive, and that can get kind of tricky because in many ways, those conversations can harbor a subtle resentment and shaming towards female fantasties, period.

I’m getting the impression that maybe there’s something about Hades and Persephone, or at least the archetypes they embody, that really intrigues you, but you’re not sure what you are supposed to think and feel about it from a feminist perspective. That’s ok, ultimately you’ll figure it out on your own. I can’t tell you what to think about the myths themselves on their own, separate from contemporary feminist media because that’s ultimately it’s own thing, and you can springboard your own perspectives and reimagining off of the original in any way that feels right to you.

 What I can do though, is leave you with some age-apropriate content that I was consuming at your age, as well as a link to a site that explores stories with similar archetypes that Persephone embodies. 

The site is called Girls Underground, and it explores and catalogues stories about girls who go on heroine’s journeys in the “Cthonic” context like I was talking about, as in exploring their own inner psyches through the experience of traversing a strange, scary, magical place. Sometimes these stories involve the trope of a spooky attractive male character who takes on an adversarial role that is sometimes also romantically charged, but not all of them do. I think the resources page may be of particular interest to you because it links to essays on subjects within this genre of storytelling. The Examples page has a ton of other stories not listed here that you can take a look at, however not all of them (but many of them!) are kid friendly.

Movies that I would recommend: 

Labyrinth (1986), which was my favorite film since early childhood, and is the reason I love these types of stories to begin with.

Legend(1985), which doesn’t depict a healthy dynamic, but is a great film and does have a big place in the general conversation about this type of storytelling.

Howl’s Moving Castle, either the book or the film. 

Pan’s Labyrinth is rated R for some gore and violence, and it has scary moments, but I think it’s fine for most teens. The character of Pan is not part of that whole “demon lover” trope because the heroine is a small child, but he takes on a similar role in terms of being a figure that embodies the underworld and thus a major part of the heroine’s psyche.

Honestly, I would consider Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (the original, not the live action remake) a good rendition. It was written by a woman.

Jean Cocteau’s black and white La Belle et La Bete.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, or a film adaptation of the same.

Rebecca by Daphne DuMarier, which is what my username is from. I’m fond of the Hitchcock film adaptation.

Honestly, the 2004 adaptation of Phantom of the Opera is...flawed, but it was my introduction to Phantom, and it’s a lot of melodramatic fun. 

It’s worth noting that in a lot of these stories, there are not perfect, healthy relationships depicted between men and women. There is cruelty, there is harm. But in many cases, that does not mean these stories have nothing to say about relationships between men and women, nor does it say that they are solely tales about abuse and we cannot find romanticism within them. An unnecessarily-long answer under the cut, because I don’t particularly like what you’re implying, anon. And I don’t have a problem with serious questions, if that’s what this is.

First of all, I feel like I’ve explained this before, but the issue with being asked questions like this is that I have no way of telling who is asking a serious question, and who is baiting me for an answer so that they can twist my words. Because I’ve experienced the latter quite a few times, including over something as innocuous as the tag I use for the two of them on my own personal blog. I can answer a question in good faith all I want, but it means nothing if the immediate response to that answer is “So you’re saying that [wildly misinterpreting what I typed]?”

The point of coming off anon is so that I can have an actual conversation with the person in private instead of getting three, four, five anons in a row and clogging up my blog, because there are always followup questions when I answer things like that, of varying degrees of bait. It’s not a waste of time.

And frankly, if you’re not attaching your name because you’re worried about getting anon hate in return, I’m...genuinely offended that you think I would enable something like that.

Now, your actual question.

I do not appreciate the implication that I don’t care about consent and tagging. I do my best to tag things so that people know what they’re getting into, without spoiling the story. Or I will put warnings in the author’s notes of individual chapters if certain topics come up. And I have had people ask me about tags that I’ve left off before, and I’ve added them, because I realized that I made a mistake, or that the implication I made was more blatant than I thought.

But the difference between that and the anons that I’m referring to is that they want tags for things that make the fic sound far more severe than what’s actually happening. Or, as mentioned in that author’s note, the people who ignore all the context and nuance of the situation to screech “abuse!! rape!!” on a fic that they clicked on despite the tags. I like fuck-or-die as a trope. And I always tag for it. If it’s not your thing, don’t read it.

For example: both of my fics where they’re trapped and have to have sex to get out, someone has left me a comment about Akechi being an unforgivable rapist. Completely ignoring that their other option in a fuck-or-die situation is “die”. In the Casino fic, they also completely ignored that the characters had a conversation in the next chapter where they discussed how it had come very close to rape, but Akira didn’t consider it that because of the situation they were trapped in. And the comment was on chapter seven. Five whole chapters after the conversation. I can’t tell if that person kept reading because they were hoping someone would shank Goro for his “crimes” or what, but their reading comprehension wasn’t great.

Other example: The person who sent me an anon on here that just said “Tag your Akeshu reblogs as abuse, please”. That’s not a question, that’s a blanket command. That’s not someone who wants to block the posts, because I have a tag they could use for that already. That’s someone who wants me to assign their morality to my blog. Which I feel confident in saying, because when I refused, they sent me an angry message about how abuse was “non-negotiable” and I “HAD” to tag it. What made it extra funny was that the last Akeshu thing I had reblogged was some cute chibis just sitting around, and based on their attitude, they wanted that tagged as abuse.

And then there’s you. I’m assuming you’re the person who left the anon on the knifeplay fic, since that seems to be the one you’re focusing on. The problem here is that you chose to focus on two lines out of the entire fic, where Akira was basically making a quip to himself in the narration, without the context of literally the very next sentence. Goro doesn’t want to hurt Akira at that point. “Suffering” in that context is in reference to the fact that he’s going to drag out Akira’s orgasm in response to Akira teasing him.

I’m not going to debate whether or not Goro “wants” to kill him in canon, because that’s not the point. The fact that the plan exists and Akira makes one single line of reference to it doesn’t affect the situation that’s happening in the fic itself. It has no relevance to Goro teasing him with a blowjob for half an hour.

If that line about shooting him hadn’t been there, and it had just been, “The look that Goro shot him promised nothing but suffering. Akira probably wasn’t going to be allowed to come for a long time.” Would that have been acceptable?

Basically, I don’t give a shit about “mean antis”. I give a shit about people reading way too far into things, or completely misinterpreting what I wrote, and then accusing me of stuff because they’re ignoring context.

been reading a lot of yandere stuff and it feels like the targets of the yanderes' love are not allowed to feel anything besides fear or all-purpose kindness (or arousal in the dubcon/noncon works). ex: they can't feel frustrated enough at their situation to vent (without the yandere/world deciding to "punish" them violently for it). its pretty frustrating... yeah twisted love is cool, but why does it seem like a lot of yandere works lack the romance and are just rape/torture porn fantasies?

Anyways, Kai here to answer to the call of rants! Cause this pathetic sack of flesh (That’s me, Kai!) just loves to bitch and moan about yandere stories :) So let’s ponder why this is the case...

All the blame falls onto the author. I mean, they’re the only person who’s writing these stories after all. It’s not like these characters are real, ya know? But why is it that authors just like to copy one another? Well, I have a bunch of theories but none of them particularly nice. But they’re the hard truths.

1. Authors who write yandere stories are simply unimaginative and they just copy their predecessors.

While writing is a passion, I know there’s a grind in wanting views and increasing in popularity. I can’t tell you the type of schemes Julie and I came up with to make this blog more popular on tumblr since the demographics here seem to want the yandere aesthetics or the dramatics. Sometimes, authors just like to chase those clicks and views. So the appeal to the majority and what is a safe to write is normally the go to. Since they see that other people who write ‘X’ about yanderes get to cum money, they don’t really have the incentive to think outside the box or explore an avenue they were interested in because other people might not want to explore that avenue with them.

Or they aren’t schemers (like Julie and I lol) and are simply that unimaginative. They see something they’re predecessors wrote and go, “I like that” then just copy it thinking they’re doing something original simply because they’re the one writing it now. Let me say this now before anyone mistaken me: there’s nothing wrong in writing an overdone trope or following a path of your favorite author/story. Tropes are fun and if you like a certain thing, that’s cool. There’s a reason why the liberal arts study previous works compared to, say... the sciences. You wouldn’t study a medieval medicine practice since it’s outdated. But you would study the Scarlet Letter to widen your horizon and develop your craft. And that’s the important key: “wide your horizon and develop your craft”. The problem with most writers is that they see a book and consider it the word of god. It is terrifying when I hear people say something like “I’m trying to copy Stephan King’s writing style”. Fucking yikes my dude! Besides the fact that Stephan King is generally a bad writer, you shouldn’t mimic a teacher but become your own person. Take a technique or two you like and blend it to your style. Don’t become a chameleon (unless you are going to parody/satire said author). If you’re going to do a trope, I say consider two things: 1) Are you planning to do anything with the trope? Are you going to push it forward or explore a facet that you don’t think others explored? and 2) If you don’t plan to push it forward and just do a gratuities writing of the trope, are you willing to accept that fact? Are you going to accept it and not cover your ass when someone comes around to point out  that it’s a copycat of another story (Ex. The Hunger Games Series and the Divergent Series)? Are you willing to stand up and say “Fuck yeah I was inspired by them and made my own version because I love the trope.” If you’re will to answer these two points confidently, then go for it. Cause the worst thing you can do with a trope is A) Not do anything with it and B) Lie to yourself that you’re doing something new.

This suddenly reminded me when I saw one of these writing blogs complaining about getting copy and paste writing requests. They were complaining about wanting to be original and not wanting to be a commodity. Well... first of all, if they don’t want to be a commodity then stop writing people’s requests, the fuck lol. Next it’s laughable that they think their original. Let’s ignore the fact of the complete irony that they think they’re writing something original when what they’re writing is a plot given to them by a stranger and also that they’re a fandom writer (oops, spilled the tea again). There’s really nothing “original” anymore since we can point out a specific trope and trace it back to an ancient text that done the exact same thing. What is “original” is the blending of tropes, the reactions of tropes, and the element that authors put in their writing to give it life. Cause at the end of the day, if you entertained an audience, then you won.   

2. Authors who write yandere stories secretly hate yanderes.

Okay, so this is a theory that Julie came up with and I probably won’t have a lot to write on it compared to the first point. Anyways, the theory is that some of these authors who write yandere stories just hate yanderes. I mean, look at half the shit that are yandere stories. Straight up torture, clickbait yanderes, and scumbags. This is what people imagined a yandere would be. You can at least tell the difference between someone who liked yanderes or hate them. For example, when yandere’s has a “gentle moment”. If it’s genuinely sweet and soft, then that person probably likes yanderes. If not, then that person probably doesn’t and can’t get their head out of “I hate yanderes” mode. We can also look to the first point about scheming and getting them views for tossing in a yandere. Just like the otome game community, even if the product is shit, we’ll still eat it up because it’s a product for a community that doesn’t get a lot of products of their bias. 

3. Authors who write yandere stories are simply bad at writing romance.

Again, probably not a lot to write on this point since I spent it all on the first point. Anyways, as this point state, sometimes authors are simply bad at writing romance or not interested in romance. It just happens, you know? An author will bite off more than they can chew and end up making a mediocre story. And that, combined with point one and maybe point two, then of course no one can make an actually good yandere romance story since they can’t get out of their head of “Romancing a scumbag”. Also, sometimes people read a story thinking it’s a romance story when really, it isn’t. It happens and we can’t fault the author too much since they either need more practice or it’s our fault for assuming it’s a romance to begin with. Also, can I complain about all these people who tag some stories as a romance when it’s clearly not? Now they’re the real villains here. 

4. Specific authors who write yandere stories have a fetish for rape/torture porn.

Okay okay. I get it, some people got their fetishes and coping mechanisms. Put down your pitch forks. What I’m annoyed about are people who don’t acknowledge their fetish or at least state it at the beginning of their stories. Come on, don’t be those tagging jackasses who incorrectly tag their shit. Not everyone likes your fetish. You stay in your clearly defined lane and I stay in my clearly defined lane. Cool? Cool. Well, on this website. People are pretty good at their tagging and warnings. The problem are the jackasses outside of this hell site. If tumblr is hell, the rest of the internet is the void.

Well, tbh, this point isn’t too bad. People do what people do and I can’t complain too much. And hey! I would rather read these rape/torture porn stories versus the copy cat stories. At least we get porn and the possible reward of being able to jack off to it. It’s just that nine times out of ten, the “yandere” isn’t a yandere. What a surprise.

AN: this is another fic that I wrote and posted on one of my old blogs but since it got deleted I decided to edit it a bit and repost it on here. It’s just a quick cute little Drabble about Jungkook because my ass had been biased wrecked. Also feel free to leave comments and criticism I’m always curious how people feel about my stories. 

Jungkook x 1st person reader

Genre: Fluff, humor, some explicit language

Sitting in the middle of a gas station aisle, crying with a pint of double chocolate ice cream sitting on my swollen stomach is certainly not something I had ever pictured myself doing, but hey life is full of surprises.

In all reality, I wasn’t fully aware what exactly made me cry. It could have been the fact that the store I currently sat myself in didn’t have the chips I so desperately craved or the fact that the baby currently making himself home on my bladder made it literally impossible for me to pick myself back up.  After I had earlier fallen to my bottom in a sad attempt to reach the last pint of ice cream I now held so dearly.

To anybody passing by I probably looked like a looney who couldn’t get her life together. my face was youthful and chubby, so I was probably mistaken for a helpless pregnant teen who finally had a mental breakdown and was currently wallowing in her own self-pity.

But in reality, I was just a married woman; pregnant with her first child who just really wanted some damn Cheetos. At the thought of the lost Cheetos again tears slipped down my cheeks.

“Fucking cheesy bastards.”

“All I want to do is eat you!” I wailed leaning my head against the sweltering tub of delicious ice cream.

“At least I have chocolate ice cream.” I smiled, rubbing small affectionate circles against the tub.

At the end of the aisle entered a pair of high heels and light up sneakers that quickly came to a halt. Gazing up I meet the face of an elderly looking woman, with thick makeup, big earrings, and a hard pinched face. Her face scrunched in further at the sight of me and she quickly grasped the child tagging along close to her steering them right back out of the aisle.

Shooting a glance back at me she muttered a quick “This is why you don’t do drugs Daesung.” before clicking her heels away and dragging the confused wide-eyed child with her.

Pulling my eyebrows down into a frown and jutting out my bottom lip I took a look at my reflection in the freezer door that stood before me. Swiping at my tear stained cheeks I set my eyes and moved the ice cream from my swollen belly to the floor. Wiggling myself side to side in an attempt to move my body from my sitting/lying position, which seemed like a good idea in my head, but in all reality 6 wiggles in the baby apparently did not appreciate my efforts and was happy to stay in the floor as the jabs against my stomach lining started up.

“If I ever get home, I’m going to kick your father’s ass for doing this to me.” I seethed into the air placing a hand on my tummy in an attempt to sooth away the oncoming sickness that built up in my throat.

“You are going to do what to my ass?” the voice held a smirk and at the turn of my head, dark brown eyes that held a mischievous glint looked back into my own.

“Kick it Jungkook, I’m going to kick it all the way back to America.” I threatened.

“How did you find me anyway?”

Jungkook smirked, “you texted me...remember?”

A heat made it’s way to my cheeks as the memory came back, this pregnancy brain had really taken its toll on me.

Behind Jungkook there were small chuckles, lifting my neck slightly I saw his giant friend standing behind him hiding his chuckles in his thick scarf.

“Shut it Yugyeom or I will vomit on you.”

Looking pointedly back at Jungkook, “why’d you bring him?”

“Muscles,” answered Jungkook coolly. “So you ready to go home or do you want to stay here? Should I come back later?” Jungkook’s voice held a mocking tone and as much as I wanted to punch him, I couldn’t help but laugh at his goofy self.

Going to my side he nodded for Junhong to follow suit and with both of their help they managed to left my 8 and a half months pregnant ass off of the floor and to my feet.

“Do you want this ice cream?” Yugyeom asked picking the melting tub up off the floor. The sight and smell of it now made me sick and I shook my head quickly.

Leaning into Jungkook’s side and embracing his warmth and soft homey smell I looked up at him. “Take me home please”

His chest shook softly with laughter as he placed a small kiss on my hair.

He squeezed my swollen frame close to his in a comforting embrace before whispering into my ear.

“Whatever you want Love.”

“You know you looked like an upside-down turtle on the floor like that.” I could feel the smirk on his lips as he pulled me towards the door. Yugyeom a few steps behind.

“Hey, Jungkook?”

“Yes, princess?”

“Shut up.”

Finally making it home Jungkook picked me up, barely, and carried me to our shared bed, laying me down softly on my side and making his way around the room collecting random articles of clothes and throwing them my way. Smiling to myself I struggled to undress and put on one of Jungkook’s old shirts and a pair of boxer shorts.

Giving me an affectionate smile Jungkook followed suit stripping down to his boxers and slipping out of the room for a second. In that time I buried myself in the blankets adorning my bed and turned some random tv show on. my eyes slowly drooping close as the fatigue from the recent events overcame my swollen body. It was moments later when I felt the bed shift and the warmth of Jungkook’s half-naked body pull me close. One hand rubbing smooth slow circles against my belly another clicking buttons on the tv remote. Rolling on my side I came face to face with Jungkook’s side and snuggled in close. Eyes closed and relishing in the euphoric moment.

But then a loud crunch interrupted my peaceful scenery. Ignoring it I snuggled in deeper only to be greeted by the sound of a couple more crunches.

“Kook what are you eating?” I questioned with a small hint of annoyance.

“Cheetos,” he gave me a big smile “you want some?”

It’s not a coincidence that bi and trans people (especially trans women) are the ones that are most frequently stereotyped as sexual predators, in both the gay and straight communities.

(This is one of only a couple people on the list where I don’t know if they’re a survivor. It’s none of anyone’s business obviously, it’s just that everyone else involved blogs very openly about being a survivor. And that’s important because they’re trying to sell the entire thing as being pro-survivor, when it actually involves attacking survivors.)

Their only receipt for this is that memestealingasexual talked to someone on Twitter who had also, in a separate conversation, told sleepdontvisit that some survivors look at loli stuff because they identify with it, instead of looking at it in a sexual way. 

Then they call this “a nice web of every big inclusive blog supporting and promoting pedophiles who consume child porn lmao!” 

robotbisexual (formerly theangrybi):

They are targeting bi trans and intersex CSA survivor @robotbisexual as a pedophile apologist. Their only receipt for it: an old call-out post where robotbisexual/theangrybi said “@leavesurvivorsalone is so fucking violent that without a single fucking example other than the fact that I think they’re violent, they come to me (a CSA survivor) and scream that I’m a pedophilia advocate… Also as a warning: they are apparently mobbing and viciously abusing and wishing harm on anyone who reblogs this post. Especially if you’re a CSA survivor. Please be careful.“ 

If you’re re-reading that, trying to figure out how robotbisexual became a “pedophile apologist” for saying that this person had "started a campaign to call everyone who disagrees with you (including multiple CSA survivors) ‘pedophilia supporters’”?/???????????????… don’t worry, so am I.

The rebuttal said things like “As a sexual abuse survivor who has worked in the mental health field, I have a really big problem with people pointing at sexual abuse survivors who explicitly state (as in the luchagcaileag link above!) that they have zero attraction to children and feel physically nauseous at the idea of exposing children to anything sexual, and that they have kinks that are obvious responses to their sexual abuse that they are using to try to heal from their sexual abuse, and saying ‘THIS PERSON WANTS TO RAPE KIDS AND ANYONE DEFENDING THEM IS JUST AS BAD.’”

They even pointed out that “everyone you are calling a pedophile apologist, or a pedophile, is a fucking sexual abuse survivor who is fighting pedophilia and child sexual abuse.”

This is not an example of @socialjusticeichigo being a “pedophile apologist.” 

But it does have an example of sleepdontvisit lying about what people are saying, in the rebuttal. (the lie: ”they’re literally saying ‘enjoy[ing] art of adults fucking children is just content people ASSOCIATE with pedophiles, they’re not actually pedophiles!! :)’”)

Same exact thing actually, for @evilguacamole, except this blogger appears to be a cis bi guy. The sole receipt: that he reblogged that same rebuttal. 

This is starting to look like a personal vendetta.

Bi/trans/aro survivor and one of the people being targeted the most often by exclusionists.

This one is especially messed up. The first receipt is @periegesisvoid​ noting that they’re being harassed by @bipeoplearentyourpawns​, who then reblogs it to make fun of them. (And to implicitly acknowledge the other thing in the post, which is that bipeoplearentyourpawns suicide-baited @luchagcaileag​.)  

But of course that’s not what the receipt is for; I haven’t seen any exclusionists call out bipeoplearentyourpawns for consistent harassment and suicide-baiting. No, it’s somehow trying to claim that the problem here is… that this somehow implies that periegesisvoid is a pedophile apologist?? 

The second receipt is periegesisvoid suggesting to luchagcaileag that she should turn off anon, because of that same suicide-baiting. 

(The suicide-baiting isn’t just bipeoplearentyourpawns. It also comes from sleepdontvisit’s call-out efforts.) 

The third receipt is from periegesisvoid’s discourse sideblog, @golbatgender​. It’s a reblog of a list of variations on radfem rhetoric, such as SWERFs vs TWERFs, and the different positions each group holds. 

It points out that radfems like to say that all sex work is rape, that porn is rape, that prostitutes should be shot, that all kink is rape and abuse and pedophilia, that doms should be shot, and that all “Bad Ships” (ships that portray abuse) are rape and abuse and incest and pedophilia, and that “Bad Shippers” should kill themselves. 

This is still not pedophilia apologism. Saying that people make huge negative generalizations about sex work, porn, and “Bad Ships” is not saying that pedophilia, or even sexual abuse, are okay.

And for saying things like “if you can’t stop looking at [fictional and/or consensual sexual content], you are trapped in a cycle of self harm, and need to get outside help from parents, partners or doctors.”

They also specifically target them for statements like “Not all kink is sexual. Claiming that is a form of hypersexualization. Stop doing it.” How that is “pedophile apologism” is beyond me.

The same receipts also try to call them a “pedophile apologist” for saying that it’s possible to be a non-offending pedophile and to deserve to live, and for talking about how their abusers were not pedophiles, but were abusers who were looking for easy prey in the form of children.

oh god worry about ppl like that in ina like, there really people out there who don't want you shipping ficitional children?????? and the main ina cast is roughly between 12-15. and got i started watching ina in 2013 when i was 19. which apparently for some people is like bad uwu because it's a show for young teenagers (like lol too bad i'm 27 and even though i haven't kept up with aries i still love ina and all the little babies and wont stop shipping). i didn't even know there was people out there who get UPSET AT AGING UP??? like wtf???? sorry i want them to be old enough to marry, adopt children, have a job, and also f.uck. the dpk au is my lifeblood (and has a lot of Problematic™ content that's never even been posted online anywhere bc it used to be an rp. my favorite is that out of all the relationships in the au, tenma and kyousuke's is probably the most unhealthy bc of kyousuke's mental health. some very bad things happened to fei (per request of my rp partner) (part of vanfeny and garsha's revenge on saru as they were sent to megun while saru walks around ''free'' (what exactly is free is a whole other lore mess in itself that i wrote up about post chrono stone future). and that just lead to more bad things fei then did to himself. problematic™ content 9492347 in the dpk au, shipping ozrock and lalaya. (even worse, bc of lore planning i did for the au and decided how their species worked, lalaya is about 6.5 cycles (faram obius years) or roughly 130 earth years and biologically similar to 13 year earth years, and ozrock is about 48 Ixal years roughly 48 earth years and biologically similar to 24 earth years. so like even a worse ship. i mean just ignore cultural norms would be different on an alien planet and also she's royalty and has an obligation to be wed even younger and is probably socially more mature than a human 13 year old. rip sorry i just like alien stuff. a lot of this was also because wouldn't it be great for lalaya to have a really long lifespan so the human friends she makes get older faster and also die way before her :) ina's gunna hurt me with the bug aliens then i'm going to… continue to hurt myself with more alien life span stuff.)

Anyways, With TenKyou, idk I think it's easy to paint tenma as the innocent ~pure baby~ and kyousuke as ~bad boy~ bc of the first inago… and seed kyousuke was a little bastard man (affectionate). which would idk explain the default to kyouten. but like kyousuke chills the hell out in chrono stone and galaxy. and just bc tenma is a dumbass with a heart of gold obsessed with soccer doesn't necessarily mean he's has to be ~innocent baby 受け~ trope. (not that these are the only tropes that decide) (maybe it's bc i sort of like messing with what it must be like to be the main protagonists best friend and watch him continue to overcome everything and be in the spot light and how everyone praises him. kyousuke with self-esteem issues, looking back at all the problems he's caused, tenma has flaws but they're either negligible or something to love about him and mine have only hurt others. disregarding his own goddamn plot armor in the past. complex, emotional, suffering kyousuke is how i like my kyousuke. need we even get into how god eden was canonically revealed to be physically/mentally abusing seeds and that whole can of worms) (also just "nervous baby i don't know how to approach tenma" kyousuke, "cheeky little shit doesn't have any regards to personal space and boundries" tenma) at least if anyone starts giving me shit about an ina ship or problematic fictional ina content, i can always respond with something i drew back in 2015.

back to the matter of new snap though… that line is so familiar (im pretty sure it's in the eng txt, i have it set to jpn audio tho). i recently started keeping a log of the messages that pop up on the camp, lab, and map screens (but haven't saved too many bc i get distracted or at least i know i'm missing quite a few i have vague memories of). (also idk why my first thought to that line was mirror responding with "That was because you were the one calling me that.") there actually were a couple messages i saved initially that would be useful for fic writing:

Todd: "The professor used to be kinda reckless back in the day. I suppose after 10 year he must've calmed down a bit."

and

Mirror: "Todd's calmed down since I last saw him. Or maybe he's just acting mature because you kids are around…"

possible implications from these that I'm deciding to consider for headcanons:

both reckless and wild in their early 20's but that's not unusual, so they were acting like reckless young adults when they were 20. makes sense.

because mirror mentions the last time i saw him (which is definitely implied not 10 years ago since todd had a research team pin so obviously he's been around a bit since the lab was established) meaning todd is potentially still a chaotic bastard but is just trying to act like an adult in front of the kids. beautiful.

and on that note another wonderful Tood message:

Todd: "I never invited Phil to be my pupil—he just declared himself my "number one student" and started tagging along! But honestly…I was kind of flattered."

the possibility that when todd showed up in game, after that cutscene he went to talk to mirror like "this 10 year old just started following me and wont go away, pls help. what do i do?????"

this unsupervised 10 year old just followed a ~30 year old man into the wilderness and somehow just declares todd is mentor (and took the research team pin from todd to ''borrow''). this is a hostage situation. todd is the hostage.

the idea that perhaps todd just got back from a long expedition and was glad to be back and spend time with mirror, except this kid started following him around and wont leave him alone or go away, and then when he got to the lab there were two more kids there. how the fuck am i supposed to get it on with mirror when we have little alone time and when we finally do we're constantly at risk of being interrupted and/or walked-in on. (that last part was mainly the premise of the fic i wanted to write. "these kids are a handful how are we supposed to have intimate time. especially bc they're all so young and have child energy levels and when they go to bed i am already fucking exhausted." i'm thinking it might work better as like a drabble collection, that way i don't have to adhere to a plot line and can pick and choose scenarios to write because i keep winding up with more scenario ideas that i can nearly piece together into a coherent timeline anymore.)

(also todd doesn't trust phil to keep his mouth shut and doesn't like the optics of the random 10 year old who started following him (UNSUPERVISED) just blabbing to his parents about how his cool mentor is dating the professor at the lab like yikes that could end badly worst case scenario.)

6 Expert Tips for Building Your 2019 LinkedIn Marketing Strategy

I’ll be honest. I consider LinkedIn a necessary evil.

I don’t have my push notifications on and I don’t check out what’s going on in there even half as often as Twitter (which, for me, is about 1/10th as often as Facebook.)

However, the platform made some significant improvements in 2018. In fact, I’m actually looking forward to using it more in 2019. Crazy, I know!

LinkedIn has made huge updates to Groups, rolled out native video functionality for company pages, launched a Vimeo integration, and have even started dipping their toes into Stories.

So, with all that in mind, I wanted to build a strategy for my 2019 LinkedIn marketing.

I asked some of my friends to whom I look for LinkedIn advice for some tips because I know they get great engagement on their posts.

Below are six of the main components of my 2019 LinkedIn strategy based on my research combined with what these great LinkedIn marketers had to say.

The first four are centered around how to construct the perfect LinkedIn post.

1. Write More!

You have 1,300 characters available to you on a personal LinkedIn post. It turns out, at least in this case, longer is better.

In fact, some people have reported their long-form updates receive 10 times more visibility than a short post or link to an article.

If you are going to link to an article Mark Rogers, marketing director at Carney, suggests doing two things:

“If you’re posting a link to a blog post on LinkedIn, do two things:

1) Provide value directly in the post itself. Before the link, write context about what it is and why people might want to read it. Write this in a way that tells a story and engages with your reader. If you keep them reading the post, they’ll be more likely to click through.

2) Lose the link preview. When you post a link, LinkedIn gives you the option to remove the preview. Do that. People see so many links on LinkedIn that they tend to ignore typical link posts. Removing the link preview is a bit counterintuitive, but it works to catch attention. People see that it’s not a traditional, boring link post and they’ll take a second to read what you wrote (as long as you follow step 1 above). You can also replace the link preview with an image or video." - Mark Rogers, marketing director at Carney

It’s also recommended that you post the link to your content in the first comment, as shown above, instead of within the post. If you do this, remind your readers to check out the link in the comments so they don’t forget to look there.

This is because, like other social networks, the LinkedIn algorithm wants to keep people on LinkedIn (of course they do) for as long as possible. 

Every time you publish a post on LinkedIn the algorithm determines whether your content shows up in the feed and how far of an audience it reaches.

By not including a link that would take users off of the platform, your content is more likely to be shown in your followers’ feeds. Content you post on LinkedIn should be optimized for engagement and not just to get people to click the link to content on your own website.

2. Tag People in LinkedIn Posts

Once you’ve formatted the perfect post that provides value to your readers it’s time to tag people!

When you tag someone in a LinkedIn post, their connections and people who follow them will also see that content. Once a few people engage with the post it’s also seen by those people’s followers and connections.

This doesn’t mean you can just tag anyone in your post, though.

Stick to tagging people you’ve quoted or referenced in the content you are sharing. (hint hint: like I did with this article.)

Then, if there’s someone you’ve been talking to recently who you think would find the article particularly interesting, you can tag them as well.

Tread lightly with this though - not everyone will appreciate being tagged in this way.

You may want to start by sending a post directly to them with a message about why they’ll find it interesting and then if they’re receptive to this, continue helping them by tagging them in the next piece of content you share if it’s related to their interests.

In fact, Yisrael Friedenberg, linguistic engineer and chief branding officer at Expirit, recommends doing exactly this.

“What makes LinkedIn the most powerful networking tool of all time is not that you can go viral. Vitality is useless for most people on LinkedIn, because they will not make one single solitary dollar off of that attention.

All the money is to be made in the relationships you build on LinkedIn. They'll become the clients and referral sources you need because they'll actually know and like and trust you, which you can't achieve by going viral once and getting a thousand likes on a post.

So instead of putting all of your attention on writing the post which will make you famous, focus on choosing people to build relationships with. Engage actively with their content. DM them. Schedule calls and meetups. 3. Use Hashtags to Get Discovered

LinkedIn users can follow a hashtag to get content on that topic in their feed even if they don’t follow specific influencers for that topic.

You may have noticed LinkedIn now auto-suggests hashtags when you post an update.

At first glance, their recommendation engine leaves a lot to be desired. I tend to see hashtags suggested by LinkedIn that are very broad or have very little, if anything, to do with what my post is about.

However, the suggested hashtags can give you some inspiration for what to include.

If you’re unsure which version of a hashtag to include, do a quick search for that topic in LinkedIn and you’ll be able to see the number of followers on that hashtag.

4. Upload Native Video

In case you’ve been stranded on a deserted island for the past year, allow me to remind you: video is vital.

Like most other social platforms that want to keep you on their network for as long as possible, LinkedIn favors native video over links to external videos.

Native video means uploading a video file directly to the platform as opposed to simply sharing the link to a video which is hosted somewhere else, such as YouTube.

Here are a few great ways to include native video in your 2019 LinkedIn marketing strategy:

Record a short video giving an overview of the content you’re sharing.

Review a book or other piece of content and share your review.

Share videos of client testimonials. (Not sure how to get clients to record one? Start here.)

Do an overview of a product or platform and share a few tips or tricks.

Create a teaser or trailer to a longer video or episode of a series.

5. Build Company Influencers Not Just Your Company Profile

When LinkedIn company pages show up in search, Google previews up to 156 characters from your company description. While having a fully-optimized company profile page is important, you have to go beyond just posting as your organization to be successful.

People want to follow and connect with other people - not just brands.

"People on LinkedIn, for the most part, follow people, not companies. So leverage your internal influencers." - Tammy Duggan-Herd, director of marketing at Campaign Creators.  

In addition to uploading great native video to LinkedIn, Tammy Duggan-Herd has a detailed roadmap for how to leverage your internal influencers to expand your reach.

“My tip for 2019, don’t depend on your company profile for posting content on LinkedIn. People on LinkedIn, for the most part, follow people, not companies. So leverage your internal influencers (employees who have larger networks) to post your content. If you don’t already have internal influencers, choose someone to become your face on LinkedIn and work to build them up.

If you want to reach even more people, then you also need people to engage with (comment, like share, watch) these posts, ideally within the first 48 hours. Again, you can leverage your internal team for this, but keep your requests reasonable. While your social media presence may be a priority for you, chances are that it is not for your coworkers.

We choose one post per week that we want to amplify and ask that the whole company engage with it. This takes them less than 5 minutes and we see close to 100% follow through. These posts achieve 4x’s the reach of our other posts.” - Tammy Duggan-Herd, Ph.D

6. Stay Up to Date with New LinkedIn Changes

With all the changes that have already come to LinkedIn in the past year, there is a lot to keep up with. I make sure to dive into each LinkedIn update and learn about it as much as I can.

I also follow people like those mentioned in this article to see what they’re doing on LinkedIn and learn from them.

One person I love to keep an eye on and from whom I draw inspiration is Christopher Penn, co-founder and chief innovator at Trust Insights.

I asked him what he was focusing on when it comes to LinkedIn in 2019 and he shared with me an important update LinkedIn is making to its developer program. All developers need to migrate to Version 2.0 of LinkedIn’s API and OAuth 2.0 before March 1, 2019.

Apps that have features like signing in with LinkedIn and sharing on LinkedIn will need to make this update. Platforms that allow users to manage LinkedIn company pages should pay close attention because access will be restricted to those participating in the LinkedIn Marketing Developer Program.

While this isn’t something most marketers need to tackle themselves if you are using a third-party app to publish to LinkedIn, advertise on LinkedIn, or manage your company page, you’ll want to make sure the platform you’re using makes the necessary changes to be added to the Marketing Developer Program.

Sound a little overwhelming? I thought so too so I asked Christoper what steps marketers should take.

“Steps for marketers to take: get better at tagging and attribution, and focus on the data you do get  - traffic from LinkedIn to your owned media properties, measured with your web analytics software.” - Christopher Penn, co-founder and chief innovator at Trust Insights.

So, make sure you’re measuring traffic from LinkedIn to your own site and use tracking URLs when necessary. If you’re using a third-party tool to publish to LinkedIn, it may be worth reaching out to confirm they are planning to maintain their tool’s functionality. Otherwise, it might be time to search for a new social publishing tool.
