Hi, you seem like I can trust your opinion. I am looking for TV show recommendations and I need shows that are either a) actually good, or b) at least entertaining without too much second hand embarrassment. Help me chef

Oh I love this question

1. The Bear, my recommendation of this is mostly inspired by you saying "help me chef", but its also really good (and critically acclaimed if you care about those things). It's pretty popular at the moment so if you haven't seen it already, you've probably at least heard of it. Its a dramedy (like 60/40 drama/comedy), about a chef taking over his brothers restaurant after they (the show has some potentially triggering content so look into that if you have to before watching) killed themself, and if follows the ups and downs that come with that.

2. The Other Two, its a comedy about an older brother and sister, to a teen boy who's become like a teenage Justin Bieber over night celebrity. And it follows how the older siblings handle it/try to exploit their younger brothers new fame. I think its a really good satire of the entertainment industry.

3. Taskmaster, this show, just trust me, its really entertaining, I'd say the show its most similar to is Whose Line Is It Anyway, as its comedians doing silly things, but its also not like it that much, its really its totally own thing, again trust me! It's very funny, it may take a couple episodes to really get the gist of the show but its so worth it. Also there is i think 17 seasons of it all on youtube for free so lots to catch up on!

4. Severance, its a dystopian drama about a guy whos consciousness has been split between his work and home life, so when he's at work he has no memory of life outside of work and vice versa. And each side of his consciousness is slowly trying to piece together what's going on on the other side. It's a really interesting show, if you like the show Black Mirror, you'll probably like this!

I hope you will take this as a fun opportunity and not an annoyance but I was wondering if you had any book recs? I generally read fantasy and have been trying to break into Adult Lit over YA (while still liking YA and hoping to find adult novels with the same engaging settings and brisk pacing but with more advanced prose). Really liked Spinning Silver and Uprooted by Naomi Novik this year, and my favorites of your fics are Seven Suitors (obligatory), pacific rim au, and the snow queen one. I’ve never really read romance before but I’m willing to give it a try, especially if there’s other genre elements at play as well. Do you have any directions you could point me? I appreciate it!

Oh, I always love giving book recs, and thank you so much for giving me some preferences because it's so much easier to direct people when I know what they already like!

My current favorite YA author right now is Frances Hardinge, who writes truly magnificent prose and absolutely amazing worlds. If you like All That Remains, you will probably love the emotional devastation that is The Lie Tree, and a few of my other favorites are Gullstruck Island and Cuckoo Song. If you are a fan of Terry Pratchett, you also can't go wrong with her Fly By Night duology. Genevieve Valentine is another YA author I highly recommend; Mechanique is probably my favorite, but the Persona series is also top notch, and The Girls at the Kingfisher Club has a vibe that cannot be beat.

I haven't yet read Spinning Silver but Uprooted is also a fav of mine; I have a deep love of fairy tale retellings, or stories written to be like fairy tales. On that thread I definitely recommend the Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden (I have a few quibbles with the story, but the writing is solid and the first book had me captivated for a good 3/4ths of it), The Orphan's Tales by Catherynne M Valente, plus A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C Bunce (her Thief Errant series also lives RENT FREE in my head at all times).

Seven Suitors was fleshed out with Regency mores in mind, inspired by by historical mystery novels I read in that time period, plus some fantasy with more rigid social structure. The Crown & Court duet by Sherwood Smith is something I would consider formative for my writing in that quarter. For something actually regency set, though definitely not the same genre, I would recommend the Sebastian St Cyr series by CS Harris, which are mysteries set in Georgian London, featuring a brooding hero who starts off with an equally brooding, star-crossed actress as a lover...only to have the rug pulled out beneath him by the daughter of his father's long-standing political rival.

My scifi chops are rather thin-- I love the genre but I find lots of the deeper cuts here get too info-dumpy for me on the hard science level-- but I can definitely recommend The Expanse series by James SA Corey (as well as pretty much anything Daniel Abraham writes in the fantasy genre)

As for All That Remains, there are several extremely painful fantasy series I could recommend, because I love having my heart torn out, stamped on, and then taped back in. Guy Gavriel Kay is a great writer for that-- I suggest starting at Lions of Al-Rassan and then working your way forward through that setting by publishing date. The aforementioned Daniel Abraham also is amazing at this; The Seasons Quartet is a decades-spanning series that will truly make your tear out your hair at the end of each book. NK Jemisin is also amazing, The Broken Earth trilogy is where I would start out for intense heart-stomping.

I feel like with how much he always has those headphones on, he probably has a range of music. From pop, indie, alternative, etc. He probably doesn’t really care much about lyrics and the meaning, though I don’t think he’d really vibe with songs that are explicit, as in sex lol, unless it’s something that’s more abstract yknow. He’s also not opposed to them either though. Just not preferred? I think if they just have a good beat or the melody fits with his current vibes at the time it’ll work. It’s funny that I don’t really write for Tsukki that much but I wanted to make his playlist first.

I think he has different playlists for what he’s doing at the time. If he’s on his way to school, and Yamaguchi isn’t with him, he’s probably listening to something upbeat to wake himself up. After practice on his way home, he’s probably listening to something chill to just relax after grueling practice.

Definitely has music based on his moods. I also feel like he has a preference towards indie music?? I have no clue why but I just feel like he does. He also probably has a few artists he keeps an eye on for when they have new releases but he isn’t obsessed with just one artist (Indigo la End is one of the artists I think he’d like). There are definitely songs on here he’d rather die than have his team know he listens to, Yuwakuno Party being one of them.

Out of the entire team, I think you’d be better off asking Tsukki (or Suga) for song recs. But it’s only a matter of whether or not he’ll give you them.

He probably listens to either hip hop, pop, rock, or the cute love songs (sad/angst or the good one’s he likes both). LOL Not that love is it’s own genre it’s just, they’re good. He likes it, any type of genre. Of course, whenever he’s the DJ for the day, he makes sure he doesn’t play cute love songs, cus he’s got an image to uphold, ya know?

I ALSO feel like he likes rap music? My friend and I were talking about that so like owo I think he and Noya have the same music tastes as well but I’ll probably only put one or two songs that are the same for either.

He doesn’t organize his playlists very well. I’m sorry. I just feel like he doesn’t?? But he knows which playlists are for what. They definitely range from playlists he listens to when he thinks about Kiyoko (or you heheh) to whichever he wants to listen to and that one playlist somehow has the songs, and the only songs he wants to listen to at that moment. Actually, there should be a correction, it’s not organized well to people who look at his playlists but it’s organized to himself.

I also think he’s a big fan of JPOP groups. I think he’d probably be a fan of Nogizaka46, and this is where he and Noya will probably have a disagreement (but they still listen to the other’s favorite jpop group because its still good music ya know). Sad uwu

I feel like Noya listens to pop, rock, indie, and like Tanaka the cute love songs and rap songs :3c. I want to say that Noya’s the one that finds the various love songs and gives Tanaka the recommendations. The song genre I think that was playing during that one episode where Ukai had videos of everyone and it was Nishinoya’s video, I think that was rock?? So that’s where the whole rock genre comes from anyway so lol.

In terms of a JPOP group I think he’s a fan of, it’d be AKB48 who are rivals with Nogizaka46 lul. And look, I want to say when I was researching into the music culture in Japan, it’s usually the girls that are fans of JPOP groups? But, I feel like Tanaka and Noya would be fans of them ;-;

I think Noya either organizes his playlists like in a keyboard smash all caps, and only he knows, or there’s just a bunch of playlists that are like “new Playlist” or whatever the defaults are loool.

Suga doesn’t really care which kind of songs he listens to. He likes them all. I feel like he leans towards “softer” songs, whatever that means, though I tried putting in a range of songs for this mixtape. Maybe I’m projecting here because I love Suga and I see a lot of myself in him, but he just likes the chill music. Which is funny because of how feral he could be. He definitely has songs he listens to that are more upbeat though. I also think he likes rap. But like I said, I don’t think he really has a preference of what genre of songs he listens to.

He has multiple playlists, from what he’s feeling mood, what activity he’s doing (working out, homework, cooking, etc.), to just what he wants to listen to at the time. Which means that playlists changes a lot because of how much he deletes and adds so he can have “atm vibes”. I think he also gives them funny names, maybe throwing in emoticons so some people don’t know what playlist is for what but he does!

I think Suga would give great music recs too. He has range so he can give anything for any genre. I think out of everyone here, Suga has to be the best DJ. He just knows what songs to play that fits best with the group and the vibe that’s going on.

OKAY so it’s already been confirmed that Hinata reads manga. I dunno how into it he is but I feel like it’s more lowkey than Tendo and also because I feel like he does spend more time with volleyball. But I also think he still does watch anime every now and then and his little sister probably watches a lot of Sailor Moon so he’s bound to have watched that too. Like that’s so cute I love sailor moon. If you don’t know what I’m trying to get at, I want to say that his playlist does consist of anime openings and endings. BECAUSE THEY’RE GOOD OKAY.

I also think maybe Vocaloid?? Like maybe he finds a few vocaloid songs because he found it through youtube recommend when he listened to anime openings and stuff. But otherwise, I think as he and his sister gets older he probably listens to what his sister does because sometimes he’s just too busy to find music (which is valid because I know my brother’s music that he plays and whenever I play something new all of a sudden it’s on his playlist, i’m also the younger one)? Or he listens to whatever is in passing (like what his friends listen to) or, again, anime openings and endings.

He probably kinda attempts to organize his playlists at first but eventually he gave up? So he probably just listens to whatever is on his library of songs and skips whatever songs he’s not feeling. If he does organize anything, it’s by songs from who recommended it or where he heard it from. Like anime songs, or songs heard from natsu, or suga, etc.

IS IT BAD THAT I THINK YAMAGUCHI WOULD LISTEN TO SAD MUSIC??? LIKE Okay he probably has a few things he likes but some that stick out would be rock, indie, or indie rock. Like, he grew up with Tsukki they probably listen to the same music together ya know? So with that in mind, they have similar artists and genres in general I think. Yamaguchi listens to songs with good beats he can vibe to or those soft songs he can listen to when he’s like taking the train and going through the day wanting to chill or whatnot. He also probably names his playlists like “chill dayz,” “just want to vibe,” “!!!! kinda day,” etc. lol it’s pretty cute but also I felt that.

The streets were cold that night and you regretted not putting a scarf on, at least your luxurious fur coat was keeping you warm. Your heels clicked in the dark street where your taxi had dropped you off. The only light came from the bar you were heading for, laughter and music were leaking out of it. You quickly walked in, to get out of the cold winter night. A warm lighting hit your eyes and as expected a small band was playing and singing while half the bar chatted around a couple of drinks. Smiles were on everyone's faces and not one lonely drunk was to be seen, only the bliss of the warm beverages. The welcoming atmosphere soothed you, the heat of the fire reached your exposed skin and the freezing night air was soon forgotten. 

You searched around looking for anyone who could possibly be the person who had invited you here and spotted a man in a booth sitting alone on the crimson leather. He had to be him, he had all the looks of a rich person, his position straight and clothing overflowing in opulence. You put on your best smile and strode over towards him,

“Are you Park Jimin?” you asked in a soft voice, looking down on the man whose face was still hidden by the darkness. 

The man turned towards you and you were dumbfounded to discover that he was young, and drop dead stunning. His blonde hair was swept away from his forehead, revealing the integrity of his statuesque beauty. His cheeks lifted as his mouth curved to form a sweet smile making his eyes turn into small moons. 

“Yes, I suppose you are here for the sugar baby deal Y/N Y/L/N?”

You tried regaining your composure facing his glowing face and a shiver travelled down your spine as the sweet sound of his voice reached your ears. He had even remembered your name which the few sugar daddies you met had done. They were usually of mature age which is why you were surprised to see that the man facing you had the face of a 25-year-old. You sat down and took off your coat to be left only in your black silk dress that you had chosen to show off your nice shoulders. “I am indeed.” you answered, taking in the sight of the place you were in.  The golden light escaping from the tongues of fire reflected on Jimin’s face and there was so much softness there, yet also something indescribable that made your head spin. A half empty drink was on the table, and you assumed he had been here for quite a while. He must have come early because you made sure your were bang on time. “I hope I didn’t make you wait too long.”

“No, don’t worry.” he hummed sweetly.

“Good then.” 

You reached for your bag and pulled some papers out over which you would discuss the terms of the relationship that was going to be established between the two of you. “I would like you to be very honest about the questions I will ask you.”

He nodded and watched as you started writing his name at the top of the form. While you did so a fancy dressed waiter appeared by your side and he seemed quite out of place in this rustic place, your eyes driffted up to look at him after he asked politely what drinks you would like. Jimin offered to pay as a good sugar daddy would do and let you choose your drink before he quickly turned his attention back to you.

You began by the boring stuff, “So, I would like you to give me your age.”

“24.”

You had almost got it right, he was only three years older than you, it shouldn’t have but the thought made a small spark light your stomach. 

“Any siblings?”

“No.”

Although the answers were short there was no harshness in his voice and a gentle look on his face as he observed you note everything down.

“How about your parents?”

“I don’t know my father…”

Your pen wrote down, and you looked up at him waiting for the rest of his answer.

“My mother is dead.”

His face was blank as he said that, but there was what seemed to be a glimpse of pain, not anything obvious so maybe it was your imagination. You preferred not to ask too many questions and quickly noted his answer before moving on. After all, you didn’t need to know more than that. You were a bit curious about what had happened but it wasn’t appropriate to start asking questions, you weren’t his friend. 

“So I would like to learn a little about you, just so I know what type of person I am dealing with. So we could start with your hobbies maybe?”

He nodded and took a sip of his drink, “That sounds like a good start.” He thought a little about where to start and opened his mouth with a dazzling grin, “Do you like ballet?”

“To be fair I don’t know much about it, why?”

His face sparkled, “I used to be a dancer.”

“A ballet dancer?”

“Yes, I used to be quite good,” You could tell he was very passionate about this subject, his eyes shone just at the mention of ballet and just that made you more interested, “I started dancing at the age of three, and proper ballet at 7.”

“Three?”

“Yes, I honestly was very good, I danced for many prestigious ballets, with the finest dancers and musicians.” he sighed the memories flooding his head for a second. You tried picturing him dancing ballet and although you didn’t know much about it, a part of the black swan movie, you could only bring yourself to imagine something beautiful. 

“Why did you stop?” you asked, genuinely curious about his past dancing life. His face went blank for a second his smile completely disappeared only for an instant before reappearing a bit fader than before.

“I moved on.” The sudden change of attitude had you wondering what had actually happened, he clearly still loved dancing, but once more you were in no position to ask questions about sensitive subjects. You decided to move on, maybe ballet would come back into conversation later but you shouldn’t be the one to start the topic.

You learned quite a few things about Jimin but to be honest you forgot half of the conversation whenever he licked his lips or sent you a smirk. His grip around the crystal glass was firm and you found yourself wondering what he could do with his fingers. The amount of attention he gave you when you talked was rather flattering he seemed genuinely interested in what you had to say. Some sugar daddies only had interest in your body, so as long as you looked and dressed nicely that was fine by them, those men usually had nothing to do with your brains. They always preferred when you shut up and laughed at their stupid jokes, you were just another of their trophies. You usually ended those contracts quite quickly when you started to get enough money, and now that you were quite wealthy you usually didn’t even get a contract with them. You did not want to feel degraded as a woman. 

“So I must ask you, are you in any type of relationship? Do you have a boyfriend or a girlfriend, a husband or a wife? I have no problem with it, but it’s important for me to know just so I can fill the rest of the contract.”  you stated.

Your last sugar daddy was married, but he had lied to you. You only found out after you had given him sexual favours. His eyes widened, “I thought sex wasn’t included.”

“It isn’t officially, but I take it upon myself to offer it to the men I enjoy.” You took your drink and brought it to your lips hiding your lips curving into a coy grin.

When those words left your mouth he gave you a smirk and asked teasingly, “You like me?”

Music influences college life

Prologue

Music. Music is everywhere; it travels in the wind, vibrates in the water, and moves from person to person. It’s embedded in our everyday lives. Music reaches into the deepest parts of our souls and grabs all sorts of emotions we didn’t even know we were capable of feeling. Music can define a person in ways such as how they behave to the style of clothes they wear. For us as college students we use music as a way to focus on certain task, to put ourselves in a certain mood, or to give our minds a break. We also come to find we use music as a way to connect with others. The beautiful part about music is it has the power to bring all types of people from all walks of life together. All it takes is for another person to feel the same way about a song/artist as you do and that could be the start of new friendship. Music is healing, it’s a certain type of medication for the mind and soul.

Act 1: The Piano in Johnson

Ever since I could remember music has been a part of my life. My parents never  signed me up to learn any instrument but my dad got me and my cousin different color acoustic kid guitars one Christmas and he also got me the ‘I Can Play’ piano. I loved this because it had cartridges that you put in it, hooked it up to the TV and I was able to learn different songs. The last time I played it I was probably in second or third grade and soda spilled on it. The summer of third grade we moved. Sometime after we settled into the house my parents got me a keyboard for Christmas. It came with a song book and I could read the simple treble clef and for a few weeks I would try to play it by reading or pulling up the song book on the keyboard so it would show you how to play and you would have to repeat it.

I wanted to learn modern songs so I went to YouTube and I would search for piano tutorials. There are many different versions of songs on YouTube ranging from slow and easy to hard. I always learn through a simple paced tutorial and I only play the lyrics because playing cords takes practice and it’s hard to play two different rhythmic patterns at a time. It’s easier for me to play what I can hear and every time I play a note I can hear the next lyric in the song.

Earlier in the school year,as I walked through the rec room, I saw someone by the piano with their phone out trying to play ‘7 years’  by Lukas Graham. I only heard the beginning notes as I walked through but I could immediately tell what song he was trying to play. There was also a time I walked in and as I approached the rec room I heard the piano. I noticed that there was only one other person in the space. He stopped when I walked in but after a few minutes he continued to play. I listened to try and see what he was playing but I couldn’t figure it out.

Someone recently approached me one day when I was playing in Johnson and asked me if I was good at playing. I didn’t know how to explain it. I told him “kind of, I just search the song on YouTube and follow along.” I mentioned that I only play lyrics. I asked him how he played and he responded with expressing that he “plays it by ear”.  I also talked to a girl in my audio class. She told me, “I can read the treble clef. I took piano lessons growing up.” We talked about the different ways to play and we realized she is someone who would play two parts with two hands.

The piano in Johnson is great because it gives kids in the Hall a place where they can express themselves through music and feel like they have a voice. Don’t be afraid to walk up to it and try. Maybe you’ll enjoy it as much as I do just remember that no matter what happens, if you feel inclined to play to keep practicing and never give up. Music is a part of everyone’s everyday life, don’t let someone else’s words erase who you are as a person.

Act 2: Party Vibes

My first college party was on Halloween weekend. Everyone was dressed up; costumes ranged from sexy police girl to a dude wearing a Stewie face mask (Family Guy). Music is everything at parties. It sets the vibe of the party and gives people a way to use their “buzzed” energy. Music has this ability to make the listener feel a certain way. One of the upperclassmen here at Kutztown loves to go out. She says sometimes the parties are really lit and sometimes they’re okay, “a great night out depends on which Frat house is throwing because some play good music (a.k.a dance music rather then rap)  and some don’t.” In other words when students go out to party they’re looking to dance and get “lit”, but it’s more fun to dance along to songs that are boppy and upbeat rather than rap songs where you can hardly hear what the artist is saying. Imagine a college party without music… yeah you can’t because it’s not a thing. Music is part of the party culture whether it’s a party here at Kutztown or just a hangout in your dorm with friends.

Act 3: Melodious Coffee

It's finals week! You've been trying to keep up with your work all semester, but you are finally caught up. You try and try to make time to study, but could never really look at your notes without falling asleep. Students often use energy drinks and coffee to fight drowsiness when they know they are falling asleep, but… there's one the thing that every student uses when they are studying to stay up called...music!

You wouldn’t think most people actually listen to music while studying due to the fact at a young age you was told not to. From interviewers I came across some negative effects when trying to listen to music and study at the same time. As a college kid myself I fall victim to this technique. No matter what genre the music falls under I need to have some type of sound in the background for me to stay up and study notes. I personally don't drink coffee or energy drinks since they are not necessarily good for you; however I listen to melodious coffee which requires no money to help me fight sleep to review notes. I realize from students the variety of music that is listened to while studying is vast. It was very interesting to see that students prefer instrumental music (which contains no vocals) over music that actually contains vocals. The anonymous student answered “I would die without music in a day”, “Music helps me study it really serves as a background noise so i don't fall asleep.” These answers were the most common responses when asked the same questions with different students. We can see music most of the time has a positive effect when it comes to studying. I believe we should abandon unhealthy items like energy drinks and coffee if we can use music as our own melodious caffeine.
