thank you for answering my question about switching the tags! Follow-up question: What do you mean by the item on camera doesn't match the tag? If for example, you try one two similar looking tops (blue tank for the ex) and u switch the tag entirely, would that flag the system or do you mean switching a bra tag for a shirt tag on sale? I had no idea that the cameras are able to pick up if the item you're scanning matches the tag itself on the computer.

it's true that similar items are harder to spot, but if you're hoping to rely on poor camera quality, don't. I have personally operated CCTV cameras before and can tell you right now that technology has improve beyond what we see on TV- If I could read the bumper sticker on the back of a utility van a full block away using an exterior surveillance cam, there are DEFINITELY cameras that can see the difference between a cotton tank top and a camisole of the same color.

And again, its different from place to place- an old gas station might have stationary cams in grainy black and white, but if it's owned by a larger corporation or has been robbed a lot in the past, they might be phone-camera quality.

Also, anyone reviewing footage can rewind back and see WHERE you picked up whatever you have, and what you've put back- and if you happen to swap tags or slap one of your own on top of the original somewhere a camera can see you, you're boned, 'cause nobody will see that and think it was accidental or a computer error- it'll go down in court as deliberate intent p much immediately

Also, do keep in mind, places like Target won't nail you the first time they see you- they'll keep your face on file and wait until you come back and do it again until they have a high enough dollar value to ensure criminal charges. Places like that, you won't know you're fucked 'til it's too late.

I have personal reasons for not stealing or frauding, and I'm not about to claim judgement or approval for anyone who does either, but fraud especially is fucking risky and yall gotta know

Chapter Twelve: Difficult Conversations

Jason sat across the street, watching the church from the rooftops. He'd been to the church almost every day for two weeks, but he avoided Sister Irene. He went to mass, but he couldn't build up the courage to confess. The thought of sitting in the confession booth made his stomach ache. He let the thought drift to the back of his mind as he slurped broth out of a styrofoam container.

The lights turned on and off in one of the little windows of the church. He wondered if he was losing his mind. Jason felt a presence on the rooftop with him, and without turning around or moving, he whispered, "What's wrong, Robin?"

"Why are you out here?" Tim questioned. Jason let Tim sit next to him before offering him some noodles. "Thanks."

"See that church?" Jason asked. Tim nodded. "I go there."

Silence fell between the two, and Jason took another sip of broth. "You date, right? Can I get some advice?" Jason asked. Tim offered Jason a pained expression. "If I—. Hypothetically speaking, of course. If I liked a girl, and that girl was a nun... And I knew she might've liked me back. What should I do about that?"

Tim ate a little bit slower while he thought about Jason's question. "Did you talk to her?" Tim asked.

"Actually, no. I've been actively avoiding her at church," Jason replied. Tim chuckled. "Listen, she's kind of terrifying... And that is coming from me, a literal zombie."

"I've gotta go, but I can stop by and hang out for a little bit later if you want," Tim offered. Jason smiled and shook his head. "I hope everything turns out alright with your hypothetical nun."

Jason went back to watching the windows as he listened to Tim leave. The lights flashed on and off again, and he scratched his head as he tried to figure out if it was purposeful. The pauses in between led him to believe it was morse code. "U-U... P? U up? You up," Jason decoded out loud. "Shit." He made his way to the church. He was startled by Irene poking her head out the window.

"I sensed you," she whispered. Jason swallowed hard and perched on the ledge outside her window. "I can also sense your discomfort right now..."

"That's because I'm uncomfortable... But I do want to talk to you. I get that you're gonna be a nun. So it's kind of pointless to even ask—."

"Are you asking me on a date?" Sister Irene questioned. Jason nodded and rubbed his arm. "Wouldn't it be selfish of me to leave? I mean, not much I could use my gifts for outside of the church."

"It'd be blasphemous if that was your only reason for being here. Sister Irene, do you even believe—?"

She climbed out the window and stumbled, only for Jason to grab her and hold her close. He held tight to his grappling line, and she laughed at him. He let the cord pull them up to the roof, and she giggled while she held onto him. Jason let go of Sister Irene once they were seated, and she lay her head on his shoulder. "I know that it helps people who believe... Nice to see a sister know what's going on with them," she paused, "But I don't know what I believe... I believe in you. I know that."

"So you're not even a Catholic?" Jason asked. Sister Irene shook her head. He would've been upset if her eyes weren't so kind. "Do you uh-. Do you want to get something to eat—?"

"Give me the night to think about it? See me in the morning?" Sister Irene interrupted. Jason nodded and moved to help her back to her room, but she grabbed his wrist. "Let's sit for a while. Talk to me. I know you want to talk."

Jason chewed his lip, and he turned to her. "I don't sleep well... I mean, sometimes I sleep, but I have nightmares. They feel so real. I assume they're memories," Jason mumbled as he lay back.

Sister Irene looked at him and frowned. Jason opened his mouth to speak again, but he couldn't say anything else. Instead, they sat in silence for what felt like forever. After two hours of sitting in silence, Jason took her back to her room and bid her goodnight.

Instead of going back to the clock tower, he wandered around the city from rooftop to rooftop. His phone vibrated in his pocket, and he answered. "Hello?" Jason whispered.

"Are you on patrol?" Bruce asked.

"No, I'm just out getting some air... And I met up with someone. I'm not gonna go behind your back," Jason whispered, "I respect you too much to do that." Jason's voice was sincere.

Bruce didn't say anything back. Not immediately. He paused to swallow Jason's words, and he managed a broken, "I really do love you. You know that, right? I just don't want to lose you again."

"I love you too, Dad... And I get it. I just want you to treat me like everyone else does. They at least give me a chance before they put limits on me," Jason took a breath, "I do understand, though. I just want—."

"We'll talk tomorrow night," Bruce interrupted, "I've been listening... And I want to see how much you've improved. It's just scary. Letting go is scary."

"You don't have to let go. You just have to trust me," Jason replied. Bruce sighed.

"You're right," Bruce whispered, "I'll see you tomorrow."

"See you tomorrow, Dad," Jason whispered. Bruce hung up, and Jason went home.

Barbara was asleep at the computer, and Jason put a blanket over her. "Left you some pizza in the oven," Barbara mumbled, "You're home early..."

Jason went to get cleaned up and took the pizza box out of the oven. He turned on the tv and ate a few cold slices. He felt as if Bruce was avoiding him, but Jason wouldn't allow that much longer.

(pls don't say dog tag chains istg) so like what are their individual experiences/thoughts with what society has decided as not-masculinity and if either of them were to experiment with such presentations on their own/with their partner, how would that go?

I honestly think Otto was a marching band nerd or a theatre kid? I might be borrowing too much from the source actor on that. I feel like he was a pretty energized person in his youth (ADHD/-tism?). After being kicked out of the house and in college he probably did express himself in more alternative ways. I hadn't given it that much thought, but I could see him being a neo-90's hippie with a guitar, long hair, and nail polish. Kind of a selfish douche but it's because he was someone who was never allowed to be himself. (And alcohol makes you super douche-y, too.)

He was probably a Philosophy or Religion major (never completed). Super smart but extremely insecure which turned into extreme egoism which was worsened by his drinking to deal with his anxiety and over-activity. I can see him being kind of an asshole and wearing a dress as a lark, but I can also see him wearing something like a broomstick skirt and a t-shirt and sandals. There's a couple of paths I can see him having taken stylistically. I can even see him going into a punk or goth phase at some point, though briefly and pretty quickly snuffed out by his mom.

Ultimately, I think neo 90's hippie dude playing a guitar under a tree in a long skirt with painted fingernails rings truer than all of the other possibilities.

Atticus was absolutely raised as a girl. I'm confirming that now. But I like the inclusive thought of intersex individuals. Thank you for including it.

And, yes, Atticus is a dapper dude. Being in a relationship with Otto probably brought even more dapper dude-ness out. Otto is a dapper dude, too. You should SEE both of their collections of flat caps, vests, and cardigans! It's like a Newsies fitting room in their closet.

As far as Atticus' thoughts about wearing more feminine things, they didn't begin to welcome back in the possibility of dresses and other femme-coded clothes until they started looking more masc via body and facial hair. It's the contrast visually in the femme and masc social and cultural categories that they wanted to achieve. They love the visual of someone who is hairy and masc presenting in clothes that are seen as feminine in themselves.

They own see-through mesh crop tops (as every queer should, in my opinion, don't at me) and flowy sundresses. But they wear things like that for parties and events. They're more comfortable in gremlin or dapper wear.

They do both have wedding rings. I only believe this, because I have no doubt that either Otto knows a metalsmith or was one at some point. I am absolutely certain they have hand-crafted rings that hold some sort of significance from the metal it was crafted.

As far as jewelry, I think Otto probably had earrings (or just one) in his youth/young adulthood. I don't think he wore excessive rings because he used his hands too much for them to feel comfortable. Maybe bracelets or a necklace with some sort of stone on it.

Atticus, a late bloomer in their identity as nonbinary masc, definitely went through the overly abundance ring trend (including a poison ring because, of course!) and all of the 90's jewelry stuff with the chokers and hemp necklaces and yada yada. And if they were anything like me (I mean...) they had their neo 90's hippie phase, too.

We've established that Atticus probably has gauges currently. Otto doesn't really wear much jewelry, though he might have a bracelet or two. He seems like a bracelet guy on the wrist he doesn't wear a watch on.

They do both have watches. They are both very nice watches. They both have more than one watch. It's a clock maker/watch repairer thing.

I haven't really thought of anything specific for their accessory wear, though. This is all just off the top of my head speculation.

As far as thoughts on gender (specifically non-masculinity) and how it would go to experiment with the barriers...hm.

I honestly don't think Otto gave gender expression for himself beyond masculinity much thought before Atty. I mean, yes, he wore skirts and painted his nails and challenged masculinity expectations when he was younger, but I don't think he specifically identified those acts as affront to masculinity but, rather, as an affront to society in general.

I think Otto having Atticus as his partner and meeting other trans people has opened his eyes to gender in a way he never considered. And as a cis man who does not openly present as queer, he probably never had to consider gender. He had some privilege.

There was an article I read decades ago about a cis (this article was written before that term existed) man trying on a dress not as a joke, but as a genuine exploration into wearing clothes assigned to females. He was taken aback by how much emotion he felt when he looked in the mirror and he didn't look pretty. He saw an image that he, and society, defined as ugly and unacceptable. (Please keep the time period in mind for this.)

He actually got emotional. I think he had a friend who was a girl, or his wife, someone socially female to whom he related his shock and emotion. He felt disappointed, even though he didn't identify as female, at how horrible he perceived he looked. He was genuinely upset.

And I believe the female person consoled him and helped him adjust the dress and perhaps fixed his hair, stockings, shoes, makeup, whatever it was that was included in this little social experiment. But the idea of someone not actually realizing how traumatic it is to have to wear a costume of a gender when you are not that gender and not "succeed" and have an emotional reaction to that fact is very intriguing. (In addition, the gendered costume is that of the most criticized and judged gender for not looking a specific way, especially back then.)

I like to think that Otto experienced something similar to this experiment when deciding to explore femme clothing for some sort of queer event and felt these emotions that were so surprising and powerful that he didn't want to leave the house. I like to think that Atticus and Margie and Cindy helped him deal with those emotions and to understand where they came from. I also like to think he started to understand the discomfort of trans people when society tells them what gender is and that they don't fit where they feel most comfortable and might never fit no matter how hard they try. (Which hits me, specifically, the 5'0 nonbinary masc with not enough whiskers to cause any question to people calling me 'she' pretty darn hard. Thus, Atticus would definitely have that reaction as well.)

They don't swear all that much. I dunno. That might be a generational thing. They swear when they feel it appropriate. Working retail has also beaten punctuational swearing out of me. But I do appreciate (unless it's a specific character trait) dialogue that isn't bogged down with swearing. This can be, and has been, done well in comedies and dramas. But for everyday life I guess they just don't find it necessary? I'm not sure I have a better answer than that except it might be generational.

As far as reclaiming queer slurs, maybe if Atticus was really riled up or feeling incredibly angry or confrontational, they would claim the small twig one. But it would have to be a pretty specific situation of which I don't know what would look like. Neither one of them are from a queer history where the word was used conversationally or affectionately. Atticus missed a lot of queer culture by discovering themselves later in life. They weren't a spunky butch kid. They were an introverted girl-thing who didn't understand why sex was so important and really liked Star Trek. They only became spunky after realizing and becoming who they were, so they haven't had much practice owning that confidence. Though they have much more than me. Another idealized part of Atticus that I've given them in addition to the killer body hair and mustache.

FUTURISTIC 100%. historical shit can be…very boring to me, usually cuz its all very repetitive? And to me its usually way too grounded in established reality and focuses a ton on aesthetic. like history is pretty much done, but the future is absolutely unwritten and unknown to for me its more interesting to speculate abt (pushes my ww1 horror story and 1200s zombie apocalypse story under the bed)

2. the opening chapter or closing chapter

opening, cuz its easier and more exciting to figure out while the closing chapter tends to beeee hard to figure out and kinda sad for me? cuz its over dfvfv like its the END. and u gotta figure out a satisfying wrap up for all these characters and plotlines and all that, which is a monumental task in and of itself (to me) EVEN THOUGH. i agree, working backwards can often hepl tremendously in working out how everything goes (i say this cuz i actually know the ending of my wip Typhoon Landing, so its easier to map out in a way)

3. light & fluffy or dark & gritty

dark and gritty ig? although it can be overdone in a way, where theres next to no levity and people bask in its grittiness. light and fluffy however can be boring and bleh, i'll take dark and gritty over that any day

4. animal companion or found family

found family for sure. i rarely have signifigant animal companions in my story cuz…well, theyre pets. the only one i can think of rn is EFJ, Dez's eventual cat who can TALK, but even then she doesn't get much attention story wise. she's just someone Dez can talk to and take care of v-v but yeh all my stories tend to have a semblance of found family huehue

5. horror or romance

HORRORRRRR cuz i don't have the patience for romance ig lol. i also don't really care for it :p way less interesting to me than horror

it depends? i prefer hard magic typically but in the case of certain settings like Discworld, the soft magic system is extremely interesting and feels natural to the world and stories! but for stories like FMA, the hard 'magic' system being built around chemistry and math is like WHHOOAA and its super cool and neat to me. so…either is fine!! if i find it interesting and that it fits in the world it resides in

bsd: gonna shock everyone i know..... nikolai :) his vibes are just impeccable. i love his whole view of life and what he does in hopes to achieve his impossible goal. i love that he's crazy cuuhraaaayyzeeee asylum but also is he. keeping us on our toes. and most importantly he is FUN every time he's around you can't help but have a good time even tho he's like, gruesomely murdering someone (i mean for me it's also part of the fun but eh)

criticism is valid and understandable and no media is free of it, but some people really spend almost all their time in a certain fandom doing nothing but hating it and its creator (biggest example is the bnha fandom is 2017ish. i swear most posts i saw abt it were hate posts from people who were still following the manga religiously)

not to mention the version of this that's like ignoring canon completely and making up new personalities for the characters in an attempt to make them non-problematic and such. pls just make ocs

Ah, don't worry about it, I'm just chronically afraid of scaring people off. I can relate to that sentiment, and I already have dedicated my time to Roy and Roy only! I'm all Roy all the time. Even in sleep. After all, he is the man of my dreams :P

For real though, wish sleep wasn't a survival requirement cause there are THINGS I could be doing instead, but I gotta be unconscious for several hours a day or face the consequences (of being mad sleepy). I get the most productive during the night cause nobody bothers me and I can focus strictly on the task but no, society just has to be diurnal.

Aw 😊 I want Roy to be happy 🥺 it's what I'm here for. I'd love to talk more in general but I'm always worried of coming off as annoying, so I just don't and stick to dropping lore in the tags unless someone asks (heh). Well, logically I could put all that info in my stories, but me vs. writing is a losing battle. I'm trying! But as with everything in my life, I'm scared of getting it done. So here's a small fun fact! Originally, and I mean "before I realised what I want is to hold Roy hand and that nobody can actually stop me if I did" originally, Max served as Roy's good friend who showed up out of nowhere and didn't talk and occasionally babysat Yellow. And now they have 8 kids (as you can probably infer if you read my tags lol)!

My Thoughts on S1E1, "The Rising"

Good old Lake Como.

"How do I look?" Always amazing, Mac, though here you are so bebby. Gosh, tiny Lucas is tiny.

Ugggh, Nikki. My least favorite story arc in the show. Even with her redemption arc, even her face makes me mad.

I am soooo glad this awkward flirting is only in this episode. Mac and Nikki have never vibed with me.

JACK DALTON

"Who loves ya, baby?" We all do, Jack.

I always wished they would have played more into the original Mac's reason for not carrying a weapon - not just so he doesn't get caught but because he doesn't like them. That was actually one reason I used to be so upset at the reboot when it first came out. I still feel like Mac's character was off for this first episode - a little too cocky, not super developed. But still lovable, and with so much potential!

It's so cool to see how much Lucas has grown into this character over the years, really making it his own while still holding on to its essence.

Lol "serious bad-assery" - Nikki thinks she's so cool. (Spoiler: she's not.)

Love this whole chase/fight sequence so much. The music, action, everything... perfect.

The sweat on Mac's forehead when dangling out of the 🚁 - such a great detail!

Kind of weird to me that Mac seems to be using so much guesswork with this bomb, especially when we know that he's one of the best specialists out there.

That fight scene in the back of the vehicle is one of my all time favorites. The whump is excellent.

Okay, but when does MacGyver ever do anything the way Jack has in mind?

DIY or die. Still so lame, lol. The parachute is awesome, though.

Oof. That landing looks painful and the whumper in me loves it. Even more, I can't get over how worried Jack is as he rushes to Mac's side. ❤️❤️❤️

Is it bad that I'm actually a little surprised that Jack knows what a Phoenix is? Just seems like something he wouldn't care to learn, especially since he's a sci fi junkie but I never really hear him talk about fantasy.

Oooooooo Nikki's on the loose. Gotta end with suspense, to hook those viewers and make them want more. Well, I want more of this show, but not because of her.

Well, awesome re-watch of episode 1. Definitely not my favorite by a long shot, but so iconic and with some amazing moments! It just makes me that much more excited to get to see the show and the characters grow!
