i loved that part in sweet tooth s2 where after johnny leaves the preserve with rani in ep6 we catch a glimpse of them in the finale living their best lives.
i love how much their friendship had the space to grow and flourish under their newfound freedom.
i loved their little conversation about how their loved ones both lost themselves with the need to keep the two safe. the pain in how after a while they knew it stopped really being about them anymore. the regret over the things their loved ones have done that they've stood by and let happen without protest that wasn't either too little or too late.
the silent promise in how that conversation ends. the air of never again and the hope of we'll be better than we were yesterday, tomorrow.
and finally the shot of rani's shaking pinky, and with it the bittersweet reminder of however many tomorrow's we have left.
#none of this happened btw i am just in massive denial over johnny's death :3#also i loved these two's little mini friendship arc i found it so touching <3 :(#we won't see any more of it...#johnny abbot#rani singh#sweet tooth#sweet tooth s2

Name ten favourite characters from ten different things (books, tv, film, etc.) then tag ten people
I was tagged by the dear @gffa who clearly enjoys making these lists and seeing everyone else also struggling with just choosing ten. Itās hard but I shall do my best sdfk <3
1. Lara Croft - Tomb Raider Okay, letās just get it out: I prefer reboot!Lara. idk I know some people think she sucks and the games suck for whatever reason, but I found the games and their mechanics super fun, and Laraās story really compelling. She was a young girl who was determined to make her own way in the world, and instead went through something extremely traumatizing. She kept pushing through, kept getting back up no matter what the world threw at her. She went on this clear journey that was compelling and fun and messy. She wasnāt perfect. She pushed people away, she fucked the world up because she was determined to find the answers she felt would make all she went through make sense. Her survivorās guilt was present really well in RotTR but most especially in SotTR. People were dying but she was so focused on finishing her personal mission. She was numb to it despite the fact it still horrified her. And her arc ended well. She finally was able to reach a place where she was able to let go of her losses and try to join society again. And Iām gay for her. So, you know.
2. Senua - Hellblade: Senuaās Sacrifice I cannot recommend this game enough. Itās tough to play bc itās not just a horror game but you feel a lot of Senuaās anxiety, which is part of the point to the game. Senuaās a Celtic warrior who suffers from psychosis, and the game devs worked directly with both professionals and those who experience psychosis. Thereās a whole mini doc to it which is great, even if you canāt stomach horror. Youāre in Senuaās head with her throughout the game. You see what she sees, you hear all she hears, and she talks to you directly at times. But the beauty of the game is Senuaās trueĀ journey. She goes on a quest to try to rescue a loved one she lost to Vikings, but the real story is about a girl realizing sheās not a monster for seeing the world differently. That the abuse and ableism she faced werenāt her fault at all. Thereās so many little things I can point to in this game that just made me so emotional, and itās such a beautiful and necessary story to tell. Senua is great and deserves a hug.
3. Anakin Skywalker - Star Wars If you asked me at what point in my life Anakin became one of my favourite characters, to the point I frequently talked about him even on my main blog at random intervals, I couldnāt tell you. I havenāt the faintest idea; he just was. And if you asked me whyĀ he was a fave early on, I also couldnāt tell you lmao. It might partially be that I grew up on the prequels, and maybe at such a young age I didnāt really grasp at first that this was a story about a guy who was already revealed to be a villain, but I havenāt the faintest clue. He just is now, and Iām so passionate about his story. Heās complex and difficult and written so well. You want him to be happy, you feel heartbroken seeing a good character fall so deep, and you want to smack him upside the head a whole lot. You laugh at his silly dialogue (which he has as Vader too smh), you cry when you see him struggling, you become horrified by his actions. His storyās also a great inversion of the Chosen One trope - whereas usually we see Chosen Ones struggle, become imperfect and undoubtedly traumatized, they remain heroes the whole time. Anakin doesnāt. He becomes the bad guy, one of the worst in the series (Palps takes the award tho). But even then, when you think this guy has nothing to offer but an intimidating villain, heās shown to have good. And then we see how much good he had all along, the good he forgot and was punished for and hated himself for. His heart that had good intentions but he chose the worst actions. Heās complicated and I love him. And more over, I love how many people who struggle or have mental illness can relate to him. I love that he wasnāt treated as a guy whose actions were glorified, but that were honestĀ in both the good ones and the bad ones. Anyone can fall, and anyone can get back up, if they choose to. I just. Love him. He means a lot.
4. Commander Shepard - Mass Effect I know that Shep is technically the playerās character and can be any combination of person, but anyone whoās played Mass Effect would get why they were put here. The original trilogy for Mass Effect touched on so many things, and was a really emotional one. You had your great moments with friends, you had your struggles against both unknown horrors, and horrors close to home (so to speak). There are so many small moments that stick out to you, and idk how many people can say that playing this story didnātĀ impact their life in a meaningful way, bc I canāt see how it couldnāt. Iāve played the games many times, but even after all of this, there are moments that I not just still get emotional to, but take on new meaning as I go through my life. And Shepardās the hero of the story. Theyāre not perfect, and they can downright be an ass if you play them that way, but their story is one of perseverance, of fighting on even when entire worlds are being lost and everyone is still looking to them. Everyone needs themĀ to find a solution. But even then, itās a story about friendship too. About tons of amazing characters that all have their own motivations, their own pasts and goals and hopes and failures. About how all these varied characters become a found family. And so Shepardās the hero of the story, but their companions arenāt just there to be sidekicks, but end up with all their own accomplishments and arcs and you go on this journey with all of them. idk the whole series is great dsalkkljads
5. Lexa & Clarke - The 100 Letās not talk about how terrible this show got and how messy it was because we all know. But it started with a really compelling story that was interesting, and to see two characters on screen who were flawed but understood each other, and to have them both be women - one who was a lesbianĀ and one who was a bisexual?? It made me so excited and itās a really flawed show but it meant a lot to me at the time to have a couple like that on a tv show, and so despite all its flaws, that relationship still means a lot to me.Ā
6. The BAU team - Criminal Minds Yeah, I put the entire friggin team down, and that means all of them. There was only maybe two or so characters that were on it I didnāt like so every iteration is put down. Criminal Minds isnāt exactly a complex show; itās a typical crime drama, and its unique feature is that it looks into the behaviour and minds of criminals instead of finding the science, like we saw with CSI. But the episodes were compelling and entertaining to watch, and, what do you know, thereās a found family at the center of it all and naturally Iām a sucker for it. Strangely enough this show is kind of a comfort one to me, bc itās entertaining but not always overwhelmingly emotional. I can put it on at any time and just have it on in the background, or when Iām not feeling well, and Iāll enjoy myself. Also strangely enough, Iāve seen almost every episode enough times that thereās a game in my house to see how long it takes for me to recognize the episode and its plot once a rerun is put on lmao. Thereās a lot of good shows like this out there - I enjoy SVU a lot too - but something just draws me to the characters on this one. Weāve been with them for, what, 14 seasons?? And weāve seen them go thru some shit, weāve seen them grow and change and theyāre all really unique. Itās not a complex show but it is good enough to just binge. A part that plays in it is probably the time in my life I started getting into it too, but Iām alright with standing by it.
7. Korra - Avatar: The Legend of Korra I probably donāt need to wax poetic about atla or atlok much at all. I just love her journey, as a brash and overconfident girl who realizes that being the Avatar is hard, the people expect so much and thereās a lot put on your shoulders. That, when things go wrong, people will blame you. She went and became this giant blue monster thing, but her struggles were all human. Her PTSD was shown really well, despite it being a kidās show. Sheās fun and her journey is lovely and itās definitely true that Korrasami did it way better, and both characters are bi women tooĀ (ā”āæā”āæ) We Do Not Talk About That Dumb Love Triangle Nonsense Though
8. Chloe & Max - Life is Strange What can I even say about this game? I donāt know. If youāve played it, youāll know why itās here. Itās.... wayĀ deeper than youād think itād get at first. I love the story, and I love the journey Max and Chloe go on together. I love their friendship, how Chloe was always trying to uplift Max and encourage her to follow her dreams, and Max just doing the impossible for Chloe. I love their relationship, because it was built on support and love and struggle. I love their complexities, their flaws, their strengths, their times together. I just fskljdjlksfd love them, I love this game and all its various stories and character arcs. Itās all so beautiful and raw and unique and yay, another pair of ladies loving each other is on this list.
9. Solas - Dragon Age: Inquisition Okay. Thereās a TON of characters I adore in Dragon Age, and to be honest, I donāt know heād be my absolute top one. But I do like his story. I love Dragon Age companions, because, like in Mass Effect, theyāre all their own characters with their own stories and journeys. Solas is flawed. Like, really flawed. Hereās another guy on my list who went and fucked up the world a bit. His worst actions (and the consequences of them) were built on good intentions, on his desire to help his people. We can get into the way this direction BW went with the elvhen religion was icky, but itās a different conversation. I adore elvhen lore and I love exploring theories on it all the time. For Solas, I just like that heās complex. I mean, heās still silly and kinda weird, and he loves to hear himself speak on topics and loves Lavellan for encouraging him to never shut up, but most of all I kind of like their relationship? A friendship with Solas is still great, but I like that itās an asexual one (donāt fight me on this, idc, itās how I see it). Itās soft, built on mutual respect, one with no pressures or expectations. Solas asks for time and Lavellan gives it. Thereās no fade to black s.ex scenes that so many times arenāt optional in BW games. I just really like my asexual wolf god egg ok
10. Mulder & Scully - The X Files Okay, itās super hard to choose characters for this holy heck. BUT I really, really, really love their relationship. Mulder is an idealist who believes in the supernatural, and Scully his pragmatic scientific counterpart. And we could talk about how Scullyās character as a woman in science meant to a lot of people, and how Mulderās tenacity to not give up on his beliefs is a nice one (when itās not getting him into trouble). Their relationship is the slowest of slow burns in television history, I think. But itās good that way. Scully starts out thinking Mulderās just a delusional guy, one whoās intelligent but wastes his accomplishments, and he knows that. Then they go through shit, theyāre a team and many times itās them against a whole bunch of unbelievable stuff (and their own government). What I loved most was also their son, and Iām literally deleting all knowledge of the new seasons from my brain bc I think it was gross and took away from the story, but I liked that they were so close, loved each other so much despite there not really being a romance yet, that Scully trusted to go to Mulder to donate to her bc he was the only one she could think of for this. Itās another asexual relationship on screen, and itās built on a love that happens over time. I just fljksdfkjl could go on about it too.

This was hard lmao. I wanna give an honorary shout out to Peggy Carter since she had wonderful lines like:Ā āI know my value. Anyone elseās opinion doesnāt really matter.ā Which is *chefās kiss*. Peggy was the true unsung hero of the MCU and they gave her and Steve a weird ass ending.Ā Ā
idk who to tag bc Iām not sure whoād be into this, butĀ if youāre willing, Iād love to hear from @sapphicfinalpam, @mariaromanovs, @vinterskald, @zombiefishgirl, @nb-aziraphales, @serkonans and anyone who feels like doing it. Feel free to obvs ignore this, or only make a list without rambles, idk. I am never too sure about whoās into this or not, but if I didnāt tag you and you wanna do it, you can just say I tagged you and I definitely wanna read what you have to say!
#liz.txt#long post#there are others who were left out bc this shit's hard!! jldskljf#thanks gffaĀ (ā”āæā”āæ)

Ermandaās Inner Sanctum:Ā Scorpion 4.04Ā āNuke KidsĀ on the Blockā
As much as I loved the end scenes, the episode copied the mission setup of 3.03 It Isn't The Fall That Kills You. Ā I love parallels and moments that recall past Scorpion jobs and tech to solve new problems or heartfelt character & ship developments (e.g., the āboredā Waige parallel to Quintis at the end of 3.15 Sharknerdo). Ā Given that season 4 is a reset of the series, I expect a revisit of various topics to show character development over the past 3 years, but unilateral copies are weird deja vu moments that spoil the magic of the series in my opinion. Ā The remaining elements of the episode were very enjoyable though because they led into the touching end scenes that I think sparked excitement for everyone in this fandom. Ā Let's get into the juicy bits!Ā
Sylvester Dodd, Esq.Ā
Sly is juggling his responsibilities as a Scorpion employee and Alderman of West Altadenia quite well since he uses his experience in one field to assist with another. Ā Now he plans to be Cabeās defense! Ā Yay! Ā I am guessing he learned his lesson after Heywood Jahelpme Morris! š Ā Anyways, this is a great development because it serves as an extension of a father-son bond Sly and Cabe strengthened during Slyās Alderman campaign last year. Ā With Patty Logan in the mix, this new arc will be comedic and touching! Ā Slyās character development has really improved from previous seasons. Ā He gives an amazing speech to rally the team behind his goal to study and pass the bar exam in 2 DAYS!!! Ā All I can say is GO SLY GO!!!Ā
š§ WEāRE ALL IN THIS TOGETHERĀ - High School Musical castš§Ā
Waige
Ow my Waige! Ā Walter supports Happyās presence because she could act as a buffer if he drones on and on about genius things. Ā He fears the same result will occur with Paige as his previous romantic interests. Ā He really wants this to work after the road it takes for him to get here! Ā And as she does best, Paige finds a unique way to accommodate Walter! Ā This scene takes me back to 2.15 Da Bomb, which is my all-time favorite Waige scene. Ā It reminds us how Paige is different from every other woman in Walterās life whether she and Walter are on good terms or bad! Ā I love their new dynamic and I look forward to more cuteness from these cuties! šššššššššĀ
Baby Quintis
IT'S OFFICIAL!!! Ā Happy wants a baby ASAP!!! Ā EEK!!! ššššØāš©āš§š¶š»š¼š¤š Ā Given the nature of the press release and the sneak peeks for the episode, the prevailing question amongst the fandom is why Happy wants to spend more time with Waige than her own husband. Ā When Toby realizes Happyās behavior change is a psychological response to a strong emotional desire, he remains supportive. Ā He is not jealous because he knows how badly Happy wants a family of her own. ššššš Ā
This is really great for everyone in the fandom who have wanted to see a pregnant Happy since the idea was teased in season 2B! Ā If you have been paying attention, you have noticed the foreshadowing elements that indicate the story's direction. Ā Since the writers teased this storyline at the end of season 3, I have tossed between the direction the writers would choose because of Toby's words to Happy in episode 3.07 We're Gonna Need A Bigger Vote. Ā But this current episode strongly suggests that Quintis' first child will be a bio baby in my opinion. Ā One of the biggest reasons why I am now convinced of this is because Quintis literally can not afford to adopt considering their current financial status. Ā Another is found in Happy's wardrobe, which is uniquely tied to all pregnancy mentions. Ā I forgot to mention this detail in my last review, but there was a significant wardrobe change, reflective of the looser and softer clothing of season 3A. The episode, along with 4.03 Grow A Deer, A Female Deer, also foreshadows how this new arc will unfold. Ā
Happy will carry a child. Ā She has stated that is what she wants. Ā Happy and Toby can not afford adoption. Ā However, TV is funny like that and could create a unique adoption scenario, if desired. Ā
Baby Quintis will be a girl. Ā The fawn from episode 4.03 was female (and spoiler alert: sneak peeks of the next episode reinforce this). Ā
Quintis will struggle with conception because nothing comes easy for these geniuses on this show, even in their personal lives. Ā The writersā goal in season 3 was to explore how Happy and Toby would navigate a sudden life change given the stress of their current circumstances. Ā This seasonās arc will likely test their resolve to develop their EQ and overall preparation for parenthood, teaching patience and perseverance.Ā
Happy will experience complications, but at which moment is unknown. Ā Her mother, Grace, died from childbirth complications, but this is not Happy's fate unless Jadyn Wong or CBS surprisingly decides not to renew her contract for another season, if ordered. Ā In addition, I do not think the story about the soldier's wife and her circulation problem and their infant is a coincidence. Ā
The baby will likely be a preemie. Ā The fawn was delivered prematurely and survived in episode 4.03. Ā If this baby is born at the end of the season with a pregnancy reveal between now and Christmas, then the length of the season without a significant time jump makes this a likely scenario.
These are factors I believe are inevitable. Ā However, these are very focused on Happy. Ā Where does Toby individually fit in this scenario besides being a sperm donor and supportive husband? Ā I go back to the conversation between Scotty and Toby in episode 3.24 Maroon 8. Ā Scotty's wife was prepared to give birth very soon and he was very concerned that the injury he sustained in the crash landing would cause him to miss the birth or never see either of them again. Ā Since there have been subtle clues about an impending struggle in Toby's personal lifeĀ likely slated for the second half of the season, it might be possible that the writers play with an idea where Toby faces difficulty in reaching Happy for the birth of their child. Ā This is also likely considering Collins is still at large and we don't know what role he plays in the story later this season. Ā Yet, one could also argue that the comment Toby makes while he's dancing links to a future parallel with the "Shiny Happy People" moment of 2.13 White Out on a lighter note. Ā Baby Quintis is going to create a lot of character growth and influence a lot of other arcs for the season! Ā I am really excited about the possibilities!!!Ā
STOP WITH THE QUIEEN DRAMA!
If you are reading this title and think I am about to bash Quieen as a ship, then let me āš¾ you right there and say hello because you must be new to my blog and these reviews. ššššš Ā This is more of a mini rant about the missed opportunities in a Happy and Paige friendship for the series. Ā I personally do not expect these two characters to have the same relationship that Happy has with Walter or that Paige has with Toby because their personalities are different and thus they will not naturally flock to one another as friends. Ā (Yes, I am aware of the irony of this statement considering Paige is in a relationship with Walter.) Ā The tension that exists between them in this episode is understandable given the circumstances. Ā At first, it didn't make sense why Happy would want to hang with Waige and Ralph out of the blue when the press release for the episode dropped. Ā The sneak peek revealing Paige and Walter's initial conversation before the mission suggested that Walter may have been behind this change given what we know about him as a character. Ā He does weird things when he is concerned about something. Ā Thus, he naturally defaults to experiments to test his hypotheses. Ā But throughout the episode we see that Happy's behavioral change is a result an inner emotional turmoil just as Walter's defense of Happy's presence on his dates with Paige suggests the same. Ā It's another unique Walter/Happy parallel showcasing their EQ struggles as the most robotic characters in the series. Ā The situation on a whole also links so well with Happyās characterization.
Yet, the navigation of Waige's relationship presents opportunities for Paige to come to Happy to seek more insight about Walter since this show has established the strong Happy/Walter friendship and how they are very similar people. Ā Heck, Happy and Walter had the same walk when they entered the warhead hangar! š Ā The impending Quintis baby developments also create a chance for Happy to come to Paige for parenting advice like she did in 3.04 Little Boy Lost now that she wants to start a family. Ā She is inspired by the bond between Ralph and Waige and follows them to understand the scope of that connection. Ā Her focus on this is the reason why she is projecting her guilt over an accident leading to a catastrophic event and disappointment over being dismissed from the drive-in movie towards Paige and her EQ contributions to the team. Ā That frustration extends to a lesser extent to Toby and Cabe. Ā She is uncomfortable with the emotion, hence, she regresses. Ā However, the function of drama between Happy and Paige is annoying to use as a bonding tool in high stress situations when there is so much potential in their friendship without it. Ā As Toby states, Paige's work with Scorpion is a reason why he and Happy are married today. Ā Paige managed to piece together a last-minute wedding ceremony for them. Ā Happy gave Paige advice regarding Drew and Ralph from her own personal experience and even hilariously called out her jealousy towards Linda. Ā So all I'm saying is WHERE IS THE LOVE?!! Ā The drama is reflective of a common trope and societal fault that simply needs to dissolve. Ā The women of Scorpion do amazing things for this team and it is about time we see more SIGNIFICANT heartfelt moments between them! Ā My hope is we will eventually see a bond form from respective learning experiences because there is so much potential and new material that can blossom from a portrayal of this relationship on screen.Ā
Drabbles...
The lawyer interviews... ššššššššššššššš
So who is really Alderman? Sly or Patty? Patty is cracking me up because she is clearly running this ship! šššššš
Ralph is so throwed and Paige doesn't like it... ššššššššš Geez guys, how did we get here already?! He was a little kid just the other day!
Walter is lucky Paige didn't hear his "I told you so!" He would have been in so much trouble! ššš
Paige and Happy are in full-on petty mode... šš±š±š±š³
How do you not have an explosion protocol even though the warhead is being decommissioned?! *facepalm*
Toby's moves to The Commodores are downright hilarious!!! ššššššš I wonder if he plans on using those moves in the bedroom... #KinkyQuintis! At least Toby notices the danger before the others literally die from exhaust! Silver lining? šššššš He's such a dork!
Happy: Why do you want to be human anyway? Being human sucks! She's ruined all of us. Toby: Well... she is the reason we're together. That is a good thing, right?! (Happy remains silent). Aww Happy! My baby is all emotional and she is uncomfortable about it! š¢š¢š¢š¢
Omgness! The way Walter closes the plug after Paige shoots down his definition of a fun date during catastropheā¦ šššššššššššššššššš
H: The sign says, "No Swimming,ā boss! šššššššš
Walter (to Happy & Paige): You two make a great team. Me: I agree! Why use a fight to get them here, writers?! We've been known this!
Explode the warhead?! Lordt, here we go again! š³š³š±š±š±š±š±
Did anyone notice Happyās subtle question of concern over the safety of the lighting guy given the new plan?! HOLY CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!! šš¾ šš¾ šš¾
Okay Happyā¦ donāt drop this plastic wrench! ššššš
Paige and Happy make up and Walter is confusedā¦ this is the subtle comedy I like!!! šš¾šššš
Cabe being treated as an intern is just too much! šššššš Cabe coming up with a method to locate the warhead based on the science the geniuses presented earlierā¦ PRICELESS! Heās a great fit for this team as Toby suggests! Papa Cabe FTW!!! šš¾ššššš
These geniuses are terribly direct at the worst times!!! šššššššššš
Sly saves the county money and funds science club in one fell swoop! And heās gonna be Cabeās lawyer?! Oh yeah! šš¾ šš¾ šš¾ šš¾
H: I want a baby... soon. You were right. I want a family... Iāve always wanted a family and I want one with you because I love you. T: The woman who hates being human wants to make another human?Ā H: Yeah, something like that. T: Shall we start now?Ā OH MY QUINTIS HEART!!! ššššššš ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY LOVE OAK!!! šššš³šš
Waige is too stinkin cute! I am feeling 2.15Ā end scene flashbacks! Are you?!! šššš¹šš Ā Also cue the āboredā parallels between Waige in this episode and Quintis in episode 3.15. Ā Paige and Toby, respectively, remind their robot significant other that they will never get tired of their antics/personality! Ā GIVE ME ALL THE WAIGE AND QUINTIS PARALLELS!!! šš¾ šš¾ šš¾šššššššššš

Goodbye June & hello July!
I cannot believe we are officially in the second half of 2019!Ā Where did the first half of the year go?Ā Iām going to need time to slow down a bit because I am thoroughly enjoying my summer and am not ready for the craziness of the fall yet.
Letās see what I read in Juneā¦
June was a decent reading month for me.Ā I managed to finish 11 books, which sounds like a lot, but 3 of these books were shorter childrenās chapter books I listened to via audiobook with my daughterā¦Ā I also didnāt accomplish much on the blog front, but I did take 2 weeks off during my vacation & the aftermath of getting back to reality.Ā I hope to get more accomplished both reading & blogging wise this month.
Ā»Ā MatildaĀ by Roald Dahl
This was actually my first time reading Matilda and I loved every moment!Ā I grew up watching the film adaptation, so I was familiar with the storyline.Ā I can now really appreciate how well done the movie adaptation really is.Ā Reading this definitely gave me all the nostalgia feels.
Ā»Ā My Fatherās DragonĀ by Ruth Stiles Gannett
This book was listed inĀ The Read-Aloud HandbookĀ as a good book to read-aloud with younger children, so I gave it a go via audiobook with my 5-year-old.Ā Ā This was a cute story that was simple enough for younger children to understand.Ā If your children enjoy picture books likeĀ The GruffaloĀ with lots of clever trickery by the main character, and want to attempt simple chapter books, this is a good place to start!
Ā»Ā With the Fire on HighĀ by Elizabeth Acevedo
I adored Elizabeth Acevedoās debut novel,Ā The Poet X, so I was very excited to read her next book.Ā I listened to her first book via audiobook, and fell in love with the authorās narration.Ā I chose to listen toĀ Fire on HighĀ via audiobook as well.Ā I loved this one just as much as her first!Ā Elizabeth Acevedo has a beautiful way with words & I adore her characters & plotlines.Ā I typically stray away from YA contemporary, but Iāll read anything Acevedo writes!
Ā»Ā Deconstructing Penguins: Parents, Kids, and and the Bond of ReadingĀ by Lawrence & Nancy Goldstone
*3.5 Stars*
This was a very interesting little book about a husband & wife team that run book clubs for parents & their children.Ā The Goldstone team breaks down books into their elements: characters (protagonist vs antagonist), setting, themes, etc. to really dig into what the author was trying to convey with the books.Ā The authors talk about a few of the books they frequently utilize in their bookclubs in detail, so if you do not want to be spoiled for these books, you might not want to pick this up.
Ā»Ā Daisy Jones and the SixĀ by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I know this book has very mixed reviews due to its format, but I LOVED this book.Ā SinceĀ Daisy Jones and the SixĀ is told in interview format from many different characters, many people were turned off.Ā Since I knew this was the format going into the book, this read like a classic rock band documentary playing out in my mind.Ā This book was meant for TV or film adaptation.
Ā»Ā Dark MatterĀ by Blake Crouch
Dark MatterĀ blew my mind.Ā I think Blake Crouch did a wonderful job taking such a complex theory and constructing a story accessible to all different kinds of readers.Ā Ā Dark MatterĀ would appeal to a wide variety of readers: science fiction, thriller, romance etc.Ā Ā I read this book with one of my book clubs and it made for an excellent discussion.
Ā»Ā Amelia BedeliaĀ (Audio Collection) by Peggy Parish
I listened to this audiobook collection with my 5-year-old daughter.Ā We really enjoyed listening to this collection of stories about Amelia Bedelia.Ā Actually, Amelia reminded me a bit of Anne fromĀ Anne of Green Gables.Ā Ā Since these stories were first published in the 60ās and 70ās, it was a bit dated, which made it a bit more challenging for my daughter to totally understand all of Ameliaās misunderstandings, but it was a great opportunity to talk to her about words & phrases with multiple meanings.
Ā»Ā The Night TigerĀ by Yangsze Choo
*3.5 Stars*
I picked upĀ The Night TigerĀ after discovering that it was set in Malaya in the 1930.Ā I love historical fiction, especially one with a touch of magic realism.Ā Ā I think the author nailed the setting here, which was the best part of the book for me.Ā It really felt authentic and I also liked that the author really showcased what it was like for a woman in Malaya in the 30s.Ā I also enjoyed the magic realism elements and the Malayan folklore & superstitions.Ā On the flip side, the length of the book was far too long and the pacing was too slow, particularly in the middle, so it took me a long time to trudge through this story.Ā I also did not care for the romanceā¦ to be honest, it was off-putting.Ā In my opinion, the book would have been much stronger without it.
Ā»Ā A Spark of LightĀ by Jodi Picoult
A Spark of LightĀ was classic Jodi Picoult.Ā Ā I respect that Jodi tackled such a hot button issue like abortion, despite the fact that it must have had an impact on her career.Ā Ā Is there a topic she wonāt address?Ā Unfortunately when you are dealing with the abortion debate, most people are firmly pro-life or pro-choice.Ā There isnāt much of a gray area.Ā Ā I think Picoult did a wonderful job of showing the perspective of women that choose to have an abortion and that it isnāt typically an easy decision for most.Ā Picoult addresses many issues in the abortion debate that are very relevant right now.
I had a hunch about one of the twists, but the other took me completely by surprise.
Ā»Ā The Storied Life of A.J. FikryĀ by Gabrielle Zevin
This book will definitely be one of my top reads of 2019!Ā What bookworm doesnāt love a story about books, bookstores, and the people that love books?Ā Ā The Storied Life of A.J. FikryĀ was heartwarming, funny, and emotional.Ā Iād recommend this book to fans of quirky characters & fans of books likeĀ A Man Called Ove.
This made for an excellent book club discussion with the moral dilemmas in the story.
Ā»Ā Beezus and RamonaĀ (Ramona #1) by Beverly Cleary
I remember a teacher reading us this series as a kid, so I decided to give the audiobook a go with my daughter.Ā Despite the fact that this was originally published in 1955, I was surprised how timeless it felt.Ā Sure, there were definitely some parts that dated it, but overall it still felt relevant.Ā Beezus and RamonaĀ captures the complexities of sibling relationships perfectly, especially siblings with a significant age gap.

Ā» Normal People by Sally Rooney
At school Connell and Marianne pretend not to know each other. Heās popular and well-adjusted, star of the school soccer team while she is lonely, proud, and intensely private. But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her housekeeping job at Marianneās house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagersāone they are determined to conceal.
A year later, theyāre both studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain. Throughout their years in college, Marianne and Connell circle one another, straying toward other people and possibilities but always magnetically, irresistibly drawn back together. Then, as she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to save the other.
Sally Rooney brings her brilliant psychological acuity and perfectly spare prose to a story that explores the subtleties of class, the electricity of first love, and the complex entanglements of family and friendship.
Ā» Keeper of the Lost Cities Collection (#1-5) by Shannon Messenger
Twelve-year-old Sophie Foster has a secret. Sheās a Telepathāsomeone who hears the thoughts of everyone around her. Itās a talent sheās never known how to explain.
Everything changes the day she meets Fitz, a mysterious boy who appears out of nowhere and also reads minds. She discovers thereās a place she does belong, and that staying with her family will place her in grave danger. In the blink of an eye, Sophie is forced to leave behind everything and start a new life in a place that is vastly different from anything she has ever known.
Sophie has new rules to learn and new skills to master, and not everyone is thrilled that she has come āhome.āĀ There are secrets buried deep in Sophieās memoryāsecrets about who she really is and why she was hidden among humansāthat other people desperately want. Would even kill for.
In this page-turning debut, Shannon Messenger creates a riveting story where one girl must figure out why she is the key to her brand-new world, before the wrong person finds the answer first.
Ā» Educated by Tara Westover
Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her āhead-for-the-hills bagā. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her fatherās junkyard.
Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education and no one to intervene when one of Taraās older brothers became violent.
Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. She taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University, where she studied history, learning for the first time about important world events like the Holocaust and the civil rights movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Only then would she wonder if sheād traveled too far, if there was still a way home.
EducatedĀ is an account of the struggle for self-invention. It is a tale of fierce family loyalty and of the grief that comes with severing the closest of ties. With the acute insight that distinguishes all great writers, Westover has crafted a universal coming-of-age story that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers: the perspective to see oneās life through new eyes and the will to change it.

Ā» Creating Room to Read by John Wood
The inspirational story of a former Microsoft executiveās quest to build libraries around the world and share the love of books
Whatās happened since John Wood left Microsoft to change the world? Just ask six million kids in the poorest regions of Asia and Africa. In 1999, at the age of thirty-five, Wood quit a lucrative career to found the nonprofit Room to Read. Described by the San Francisco Chronicle as āthe Andrew Carnegie of the developing world,ā he strived to bring the lessons of the corporate world to the nonprofit sectorāand succeeded spectacularly.
In his acclaimed first book,Ā Leaving Microsoft to Change the World, Wood explained his vision and the story of his start-up. Now, he tackles the organizationās next steps and its latest challengesāfrom managing expansion to raising money in a collapsing economy to publishing books for children who literally have no books in their native language. At its heart,Ā Creating Room to ReadĀ shares moving stories of the people Room to Read works to help: impoverished children whose schools and villages have been swept away by war or natural disaster and girls whose educations would otherwise be ignored.
People at the highest levels of finance, government, and philanthropy will embrace the opportunity to learn Woodās inspiring business model and blueprint for doing good. And general readers will loveĀ Creating Room to ReadĀ for its spellbinding story of one manās mission to put books within every childās reach.
