The people’s names in brackets are my friends you gave me suggestions for my trips.
DECIDING WHAT TO TAKE
This depends on how many days you are away and what type of trip you are taking -  a bus trip, a cruise, hotels or staying with friends.
Does the Hotel have laundry facilities or if you are staying for a while - is there a Laundry Mat nearby.
Most Hotels have an iron. If there is not an iron in the room, ring the Front Desk
Always check what is included with the amenities on their website.
Take a peg less clothesline with the hooks and not the suction caps ( Aussie Disposal about $7) and some pegs. I bought some at Daiso’s (Japanese store) which was just $2.80 and have hooks. These are good as some coat hangers in your Hotel rooms cannot be removed.
Take a wash bag for delicates as if you are sharing a load then you can separate yours easily. Most laundry mats in USA have vending machines to change your notes into coins and buy soap powder. Most washes cost about $2 and they use quarters and takes about 35 minutes to wash. Then the dryers cost about the same for about 45 minutes. Don’t make the temperature too hot.
 WHAT TO PACK
Golden rule – make a list what you want to take, then lay it out and then cut it by a third.  There is always one or more piece that you will not wear.
For a summer holiday
One pair jeans
2 pair of ¾ pants,
2 shorts,
1 pair of good black pants. If black is not your colour then the colour that will match your evening tops
5 nice tops for day time that mix and match with your shorts and pants
4 nice tops for evening
1 cardigan for night and/or jacket,
1 rolled up rain jacket
1 long sleeved top.
Shoes  - Pair of thongs if you can walk all day in them. I cannot.
Runners or sneakers for walking
Good walking sandals or skechers
Nice pair of sandals or ballet shoes to wear at night
5-7 Bras as they can be easily washed
Underpants – well I take all my old ones and throw them out after wearing. ( Mary told me this one.) My last trip I took 14 pairs and must admit I did wash a few pairs and then started throwing them out in the waste basket.  Good way to have more room in your suit case for all the items you will buy on your trip.
Socks- this is up to you.
 PACKING
To pack, I  roll all my tops together. Shoes I put in plastic bags. Toilet bag at the bottom of the suitcase and at the end, so when the suit case stands up,  it is on the bottom. I bought the packing cells from Kathmandu and placed my bras in one, undies in another and socks in the third.  These are great as on one side of the cell  is mesh and when you put them in your suitcase and squash then down all the air comes out.  You can also buy these at Daiso (everything is $2.80 shop). These are located in Box Hill and 2 in Melbourne CBD.
Toiletries
When I have booked my trip then I start buying items for the Toiletry bag especially when they are on special. If you are going on a small trip then  and are getting low in what you are using now  - shampoo etc and if you think there is enough left for the days you are away then put that away in your toilet bag. Same with toothpaste, deodorant, moisturiser, eye makeup remover, conditioner, cleanser, sun tan cream etc. The packet of cleanser wipes are also good to take. Once your trip is finished you can just throw them all away and you have more space and less weight in your suitcase.
Always keep the small sample bottles after use as they are very handy to take small amounts of your conditioner etc away with you.
Put all liquids in Zip lock bags as for sure something will leak. I take a few extra as some always will break and they are also good for carrying food in on day trips.
Put in small nail scissors, nail file and I use the nail polish remover pads  (and do not take a bottle ) or otherwise buy the remover when you  get there. I buy a 6 pack of the flat Kleenex tissues as they fit very easily in your hand bag which does not take up too much room.
MAKEUP BAG
Same goes for the makeup. If you are getting low with your foundation, eye shadow  or eyeliner etc. put them in your make up bag. I buy an inexpensive mascara or take the small travel size. Less is better. Or in US buy up as Revlon, Estee Lauder etc are very cheap.
SHOPPING IN USA
Clothes and cosmetics are so much cheaper in USA.  When the Department stores have the Free gift sometimes you only need to spend $30 so then only buy one item and get a free gift. So go back the next day and buy the next item and so on.  End of season sales are just brilliant with extra 25% to 50% off. I love Labour Day sales which starts around 2nd Monday of September.  Revlon nail polish is about US$5 plus tax, same with Maybelline, Covergirl, Prestige.
Sizing I usually go down one size only for USA and go up one size for UK and Europe. Some say go down 2 sizes for US.
List of Department stores in USA.
Bloomingdales   and Neiman & Marcus very expensive and have High end brands
Nordstrom – up market and similar to David Jones
Macy’s – they have sales all the time and sometimes as good as or better than the Outlet malls. Visit the information desk show your passport and you 10% off voucher for 30 days. Read the fine print as discount not on perfume or makeup.
Dillard’s  and Belk’s -  similar as Myers.
Wal-Mart  - huge variety cheap cosmetics, plus they have food and alcohol.
Sears – cheap like K Mart
Target - huge variety of cheap cosmetics, plus they have food and alcohol
 VARIETY STORES
Wahlgrens – sells souvenirs and a variety of food etc Phone cards, cheap cosmetics
ABC Stores -  sells souvenirs and a variety of food etc, Phone cards, cheap cosmetics
Duane Reade – pharmacy sells food, cosmetics etc.
Discount Stores – Look online if any of these are near where you are staying
Nordstrom Rack  ( discontinued lines)  - lot of racks
Burlington Coats ( not just coats but discontinued lines) - lot of racks
Ross dress for less. My favourite store, just ask Lisa.  You must go through a lot of racks but it’s worth it. The racks are in sizes and in categories, tops, dresses, knits etc. My suit l bought last year in Denver was $70. So I bought 2. I believe Irene found one great store in Oregon and Hawaii.
Marshalls, TJ Maxx and Kohls - all very similar to Ross’s
Century 21 in New York and it was  Leanne who showed me the way to shopping bliss. My first Calvin Klein suit I bought for $100, plus it has bags, cosmetics,  so many different brands but you need to get there first thing in the morning as it gets so busy and close very late.
FACTORY OUTLETS IN USA
http://www.premiumoutlets.com/centers/
http://www.tangeroutlet.com/
 LAS VEGAS
Best place to shop especially Labour Day sales is Vegas. 2 Factory Outlets – North and South. Join up online and you can get coupons. The South is near the airport and North is past Fremont Street. North has more high end shops. Just take the Express bus to both Outlets. Look up the website and plan your day. Shops open at 10 am and close quite late either 9 or 10pm. I usually plan my day and have a list of shops I want to visit.
The South Outlet is all under one roof and has great bargains. I shop here first as both have different discounts. The South had Tommy Hilfiger Polo shirts for $25 then the North had the same items for $35. Ralph Lauren in the North I got a cotton cable knit for $20. So I always go to both especially if you love shopping. The South has Elizabeth Arden and the North has Estee Lauder and Lancome.  Ann Taylor is a great store for ladies. I got my sister a t-shirt for under $5 in the summer sales and good quality. Skechers sales are great, buy one get second for half price. Levi jeans you can get around $40.
There is also the Fashion Show Mall very similar to Chadstone with lots of eating places it is just past Treasure Island and also the Miracle Mile Shops which part of Planet Hollywood complex.  It has H & M, ABC shop, Wahlgrens and lots of places to eat as well. There are 2 Ross Dress for Less in Vegas. One is near the M & M shop and the other down past Wynne’s Casino.
HALF PRICE TIX IN VEGAS- Check the website for locations and shows.
There are many places along the strip you can get tickets for shows that night for half the price. They open around 10am and you can get reasonable priced tickets for Shows that night or the next plus food vouchers and tours.  It might cost you $2 and get a voucher that gets you a Buffet for less than $20, just an example. If you come back the next day you get the VIP treatment and line up in the express line.
HOTELS in Vegas
Most Hotels are Casinos and you do not have Tea/Coffee facilities in your room. Some have Mini bars or occasionally you get a Refridgerator but  you can request one. Sharon bought me an Infuser, it is a big element that you put in a cup of water and it boils.  Some Hotels include breakfast in your deal so that is great. If not, then take your own bag of tea bags or coffee from home or from the previous Hotel you stayed at, buy the infuser, take a cup bought from a $2 shop together with your plastic bowl and then buy some cereal and milk from Wahlgrens/ABC/Whalers  or whatever store is closest and you are set for breakfast.  Always take every packet of Tea/coffee in every Hotel and save it for the rest of your trip. If you run out just ring the Front Desk and ask for more when the cleaner comes around.
Sharon always told me to leave a dollar on the pillow case for the cleaner each day and they leave extra tea/coffee for you.
FOOD
The size of the meals are so big and quite cheap but remember to calculate  your tip which is roughly 15-20%  of  the bill before the tax. The wages are very low for a waitress. They get only around $6 to $8 an hour plus the tips. We asked one girl and her tips also cover the person who clears away the dirty dishes, the cook and the barman. Some places have a suggested tip percentage on the bill so they will list 10 %, 15% and 20% so you can choose. If you pay by card you can add the tip on. I usually leave my tip in cash. If you are at a bar then it is $1 per drink.  Sharon told me to keep my dollar bills so I can leave the tips separately. Sharon is my guru for tipping and much more.
If you eat in the restaurants that are part of your Hotel in Vegas, and nearby Hotels you can use your room key and will put your food bill onto your Hotel bill so when you check out you can pay by either credit card or cash.
Good places to eat.
PF Changs – Asian food but modern
Roys  in Hawaii in Lewers Street – has the best Lava cake for dessert. There are a few around the US
Californian Pizza   Kitchen – not just Pizza,  I love the Cobb salad. Yum.
New York Cheesecake Factory – not just cheesecake
Wolf Gang Puck
Hard Rock cafe
Buffets are in every Hotel in Vegas.

A Week In Toronto, Canada, On A $55,000 Income
Welcome toMoney Diary, where we’re tackling what might be the last taboo facing modern working women: money. We’re asking millennials how they spend their hard-earned fund during a seven-day period — and we’re tracking every last dollar.
Today: a freelance copywriter working in the field of advertising who attains $55,000 per year and spends some of her money this week on a one-piece swimsuit. Below, we asked the OP some questions about her career. Editor’s note: All prices ought to have converted to U.S. dollars.
How did you get into your line of work?
“I worked in marketing and copywriting at large companies for five years before constructing the leap to freelancing full-time. I left my last chore shortly after a round of layoffs left me doing the work of two people. I was unhappy and anxious, so I left my job to freelance. In hindsight, I likely should have taken more time to freelance as a side hustle and build up a client base before discontinue, but fortunately it’s worked out for me in the long run.”
What are the challenges of has become a freelancer?
“The biggest challenge for me is the isolation of running freelance. I typically run from home, so it’s been really important for me to has made every effort to get out and meet with friends and family often to make up for the lack of human interaction during the day. Another big challenge for me has been managing the business side of being a freelance. I’ve always ran in creative fields, and it took me a long time to get a handle on the skills needed to run a business. Managing my business finances, dealing with taxes, pitching new business — it’s all been a learning experience! “
What advice would you give to someone start now as a freelancer?
“If possible, start freelancing part-time while you still have the security of a stable job to give yourself time to build up a roster of clients. Once you do run full-time, make sure you have savings set aside is to support you through the first year or so of business, because it can be tough getting a full-time freelance business off the ground. And make sure you take time to appreciate all the benefits and rewards of working for yourself, because freelancing are likely to be stressful and tiring, but it helps to reflect on why you’re doing it.”

Day One
7 a. m. — I awake to stinky-breath kiss from my puppy, who is standing next to my bed, tail wagging, chipper as anything. This is her be pointed out that she’s ready to go outside, subtle as a kick in the pants. I roll out of bed and open the back entrance for her. When she’s done her morning business, I let her back in and crawl back into bed with her for a morning snuggle. My boyfriend, L ., got into the shower while I was up with the dog, so the two of us take full advantage and spread out.
7: 30 a.m. — L. kisses us both goodbyes and heads to work. I get up, wash my face with Cosrx Good Morning cleanser, then apply the Ordinary Buffet serum and Tatcha Water Cream. I brush my teeth, drink a glass of water, and take the dog for our morning outing. We’re luck enough to live near a huge urban park with a lot of off-leash dog roads, so I get to start my day surrounded by nature while the dog runs around like a maniac terrorizing the local squirrel population. I try to simply enjoy the warm morning, but I’m already making a mental to-do list.
8: 30 a.m. — I feed the dog and then feed myself — a pot of Earl Grey tea to fuel my morning and pair it with a piece of sourdough toast drizzled with honey. I recently switched to tea on weekdays because my anxiety has been off the charts and coffee tends to make it worse. I have a general nervousnes disorder and experience panic attacks, so I try my best to keep them at bay when possible. But tea will never fill the same void my morning coffee usually does.
8: 45 a.m. — I’m at my desk in my home office, where I put my mental to-do list on paper and get started checking off items. I expend the morning send emails and chatting with my biggest client about ad direction for an upcoming campaign.
11 a. m. — I take a quick break to walk to the bookstore around the corner from my house. I pick up three volumes — two fictions by Canadian writers Esi Edugyan and Catherine Hernandez, and a nonfiction book The Secret Wisdom of Nature by Peter Wohlleben. Then it’s back to work on ad copy. $54.77
1 p. m. — I break for lunch. We have a mishmash of assorted leftovers from a dinner party, so I graze on those while I heat up some sad tomato soup that’s likely close to its expiration date. I soup it up( sorry for the pun) by adding leftover quinoa from the fridge, some spinach leaves, and leftover roasted potatoes that I chop up and throw in the pot. Then it’s back to work, where I invoice a client for a project I wrapped up on Friday and get back to a writing project. I’m at my desk for the rest of the day, with a few procrastination snuggles and chats with the dog hurled in for good measure.
6: 30 p.m. — L. comes home and asks if I want to go out for wings at our local pub. I’m in, but have a bit more work to finish. He takes the dog for her nighttime stroll( I take her in the morning, he takes her in the evening ), and we make plans to meet a friend at the tavern a bit later.
8 p. m. — After finishing as much work as I can, L. and I walk over to our local. Our friend is already there, and we catch up over wings and nachos. I also have a pint of a local APA. We all trade off on who pays for these dinners, and today it’s our friend’s turn.
10 p. m. — We catch up for a couple hours about work, travel plans, politics, and more. Then L. and I stroll home. I let the dog out for one final pee of the night. Then I make myself a beaker of Sleepy Time tea and read the latest issue of The New Yorker.
11 p. m. — I do my nighttime skin routine: Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil Cleanser, Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, The Ordinary serum, and Dermalogica Sound Sleep Cocoon night cream. It seems over the top, I know. But my scalp in wintertime is like a ragged piece of sandpaper, so I pay good money to make it not look and feel quite so terrible. I head to sleep right after.
Daily Total: $54.77
Day Two
6 a. m. — I’m get up early today to get a jumpstart on work that I’m stressed about. I’m cursed with being most productive first thing in the morning while also being terrible at getting up early. I sneak out of the bedroom so as not to disturb L. and get to work at the dining room table finishing an article.
8: 45 a.m. — Complete the article and send it to my client. Hopefully there won’t be too many revisions; I’ve already spent way more time than I expected to on this project, and I’m billing a fixed rate , not by the hour. I do my morning routine and then head out with the dog. On the way to the park, we stop to get her nails clipped at a local store. It costs $13 and I tip-off$ 4 because the groomer is always so patient and kind with my dog, who is quite the chicken shit with her fingernails. $17
10: 30 a.m. — I’m back after a very slippery stroll. There was a flashing freeze overnight, so I shuffled awkwardly like a penguin to avoid falling while my puppy took no such precautions and careened around with more than a few Bambi-on-ice moments. I stimulate myself a breakfast taco with egg, cheddar, avocado, and a local brand of fermented hot sauce. While I’m waiting for the egg to cook, I snack on quick-pickled cucumber from the fridge. I realise pickles are a weird thing to start the day with, but it simply feels right. Then I’m back to my desk responding to a flood of emails.
12 p. m. — I take a break to shower, which is something I do far too infrequently as a person who works principally at home. Self-employment has turned me into a bit of a hermit-gremlin. Then it’s back to run. I picked up a shift at the bar I work at tonight to help a sick coworker out, though I usually only work one weekend shift per week. As a result, I’m emphasized about get all my work done before I have to leave.
4 p. m. — I put on more makeup for run than I wear on a typical day: concealer for that under-eye luggage, eyebrow gel, eyeliner, mascara, and blush. Then I’m out the door walking to the subway. I swipe my Presto card to get into the station. My Presto card is tied to my credit card and autoloads $50 whenever my balance drops-off below $10. A single ride in Toronto is $3.
5 p. m. — I arrive at the bar, where I say hi to everyone working and then snack on the staff meal, which today is tacos. Nothing incorrect with a doubled taco day. I got this part-time bartending gig when I first started freelancing in 2016, back when I had few clients and not enough money coming in to subsistence myself. I can afford to quit the job now, but I love the people that I work with, and I love that it’s so different from my normal workdays. I’m on my feet rushing around and constantly interacting with new people. So for now, I’m happy to keep up one shift per week.
11: 30 p.m. — The bar was slammed tonight, considering it’s a random Tuesday in the dead of wintertime. Good for tips, bad for my sleep schedule. I have a quick pint of IPA as my staff drink and chat with another bartender, and then it’s time to hustle home. I induced $140 in tips tonight, but I end up spending $19.01 on a taxi ride home, plus a$ 4 tip-off. I justify it by telling myself my tips-off are practically free fund, since I don’t usually work Tuesday nights. I can find a justification for spending in almost any situation. It’s one of my hidden talents. $23.01
12 a. m. — I get home and am greeted by pitiful cries and many face licks from the dog, who I pet and wrestle for a couple minutes. I chat with L. for awhile, who has tried to stay up to wait for me, although I suspect he was actually passed out on the couch until I opened the front door. Then I do my nighttime skincare routine, brush my teeth, get in my PJs, and get to bed by 12:45.
Daily Total: $40.01
Day Three
7 a. m. — My alarm is blaring, and I wish it would just stop being so rude. I bundle the dog up in her coat before we head out on our stroll. The trails are just as slippery as yesterday, with the added complication that there are ice pellets falling from the sky that feel like itty bitty daggers stabbing your eyeballs. Although, in all integrity, I’m glad owning a dog forces-out me to get out and interact with the world in some little style every day. As someone who has long had anxiety and occasional bouts of depression, it has helped my mental health immensely. So has just having her around as a buddy. I’m so grateful for her. Dogs are the greatest.
8: 15 a.m. — I feed the dog when we get home and attain myself toast with honey for breakfast. I can’t defy the siren song of the coffee cupboard after such a late night. I brew up a pot in the Bodum, knowing I will regret this decision soon. Then I settle in at my desk and respond to emails I missed while I was at the bar last night. I also work on a few projects for a client in the tech industry.
11: 15 a.m. — I change into workout gear and head out early for my Pilates class. It usually only takes me approximately half an hour to get there by metro, but I don’t want to take my opportunities in the terrible weather. The streets are pretty much abandoned and I start to wonder why I’m the only weirdo braving the cyclone — perhaps everyone else knows something I don’t? But I make it on the metro just fine( swiping my preloaded Presto card again) and make it to the studio without incident.
12 p. m. — Our class is small because the cyclone has scared people off — there are only four of us. I’ve been coming to this studio for four years, and it’s like a warm, supportive home away from home. Everyone is so encouraging and kind, and the classes are challenging but grounded in mindfulness, which I find really helpful for my anxiety. I don’t pay, because I have a monthly unlimited pass.
1 p. m. — After a challenging, uplifting class, I reward myself for coming in this shitty weather. I head around the corner to my favorite Vietnamese spot in the city, and order a small rare beef pho. “Small” is a misnomer — it’s a big bowl brimming with rich broth, a huge tangle of rice noodles, and paper-thin slice of rare beef that cooks in the broth. I load my bowl up with Thai basil, bean buds, chili, and hoisin sauce and demolish the whole thing, along with complimentary Jasmine tea. I run into two friends while I’m at the restaurant and chat with them for a few minutes before I leave. $10.01
1: 30 p.m. — I’ve had a nice, long mid-day violate, but I have to get back to work. I walk down the street to a coffee shop, buy an Earl Grey tea ($ 2.13+$ 1 tip-off ), and take advantage of the wifi. I work on an article for a client for a few hours and respond to work emails. After my first mug runs out, I order a peppermint tea ($ 2.13+$ 1 tip-off ). $6.26
3: 30 p.m. — I pop over to my favorite local brewery in this neighborhood, where I stock up on a mix of their beers because we’re having people over tonight ($ 38 ). Then it’s back on the subway with my preloaded Presto card. $28.91
4 p. m. — Back in my neighborhood, I stop off at our local butcher shop for chicken thighs for the chicken tacos we’re constructing tonight. I also pick up flour tortillas, salsa, limes, and an onion. We have the rest of the ingredients at home. L. and I have a joint account for our rent and fund for shared expenditures like groceries and pet costs, and I use this account to pay. It comes to $24.34, so $12.17 for my half. $12.17
4: 15 p.m. — After checking that nothing urgent has come in by email, I get back to working on the article I started earlier today.
5: 30 p.m. — I pour myself a glass of wine from an open bottle in the fridge and get started on the chicken for our tacos. I cook the chicken thighs in a spicy chipotle and tomato sauce, and let it simmer and thicken for quite awhile on the stovetop. While the chicken is pretty much taking care of itself, I prep some of the accompaniments: I make a garlic-cilantro-lime crema to top the tacos, slice up some avocado, and prep cotija cheese. I also pull a jar of quick-pickled onions L. made a week ago from the fridge so I don’t forget about them.
6 p. m. — L. comes home and heads out on a stroll with the dog. Dinner is in good shape, so I head back to my desk to get more run done.
7: 30 p.m. — My friend and his partner come over for a game night. We ingest many tacos, drink many beers, and play many rounds of board games.
10 p. m. — Our guests head out, L. gets to work cleaning up, and I get to sit down on the couch because I cooked. I love this arrangement because I enjoy cooking but hate cleaning up. Also, I’m a messy cook. The kitchen looks like it was hit by a tiny, isolated tornado when I’m done with it. L. deals with all that while I watch an episode of Killing Eve and drink a glass of wine. I head to bed around 11.
Daily Total: $57.35
Day Four
7 a. m. — Before I’m fully cognizant, I hear tires whining on my street and realise we had freezing rainfall last night. This changes my dog-walking schemes because the trails will merely be too treacherous. I do my morning routine and the dog and I head to a local schoolyard instead, where she cavorts around with another puppy and chases poor unsuspecting squirrels.
7: 45 a.m. — Back home, I feed the dog and stimulate myself a pot of Earl Grey and a smoothie with banana, cashew milk, cinnamon, peanut butter, spinach, and chia seeds. Then I’m at my computer sending emails. I work on media pitches for one of my clients, which isn’t something I’ve done in a while, although I ran as a publicist back in the working day. Although most of my work is copywriting, I do get pulled into communications and marketing work for clients because I have experience there, too. I only opt the writing side of the biz.
9: 45 a.m. — I break for a quick shower, then hop on the subway use my Presto pass. I’m meeting a friend who also runs freelance for a run date. We have free admission to a new coworking space because it’s our first visit. I get an Earl Grey tea and get back to work.
1 p. m. — My friend and I break for lunch. I have a lentil, beet, and mushroom salad. Then we continue working, with a bit of rumor and procrastination sprinkled in, of course.
3: 30 p.m. — We settle our bills for our drinkings and lunch ($ 16.73+ $3.80 tip ). We then walk out to hop on a streetcar home, but there’s tons of construction outside and traffic is a mess, so we decide to start walk-to. $20.53
4: 15 p.m. — We’re still walking. To reward our parched egoes, we stop in at a local brewery. We end up getting two rounds and each pay for one ($ 10.65+ $2.30 tip ). I have the nitro stout and then the English-style bitter. We catch up on relationships, friends, travelling, family, and everything under the sun. She’s one of my best friends, and it’s great to spend a whole day with her. $12.95
7 p. m. — I realize the dog is probably traversing her little legs back home with no peeing breakings throughout the day, so I call it an evening and take the subway a couple stops. I grab a bottle of wine ($ 11.41) and a frozen pizza ($ 4.56) on the walking home from the station, because the smoothie and salad aren’t cutting it after two brews. $15.97
7: 30 p.m. — The dog loses her shit when she hears me come home and I let her in the backyard. L. texts to let me know he’s on his way home soon after a run event. I give the dog dinner and then pop my dinner in the oven. While I wait, I pour a glass of wine and turn on an episode of Killing Eve.
8: 30 p.m. — L. get home and takes the dog for a stroll right away. Then we chat about our respective days over wine. L. mentions that some coworkers were asking when we were going to get married and have kids. Awkward — it’s weird how people who don’t “ve known you” all that well can be rather nosy about your personal life. After we chat for a bit, I go through my evening routine and head to bed around 10:30.
Daily Total: $49.45
Day Five
7 a. m. — I wake up and am surprised to not have even a whisper of a hangover. I chalk it up to the pizza. I do my morning routine and take the dog for a walk in the off-leash park.
8 p. m. — Back home, I feed the dog breakfast, construct myself a pot of tea, and boil an egg before sitting down at my computer to send a bunch of emails and start working on social media transcript for a client.
12 p. m. — I finish up what I’m working on and break for the working day. Since I pretty much always work one weekend day at the bar, I try to take a half day off on Fridays. I take the metro to the Art Gallery of Ontario, where I’m meeting my parents to consider the new “Impressionism in the Age of Industry” exhibit. We all have gallery memberships, so admission is free.
2: 30 p.m. — We’re famished after a few hours of art appreciation, so we go to a ramen restaurant that’s close to the gallery. I get a bowl of ramen and a brew. My mothers pay.
3: 30 p.m. — I get back on the subway and head home. I find an email that I’ve been charged $50 Canadian to reload my Presto pass ($ 38.03 USD ). $38.03
4 p. m. — On my walk home, I stop in at the drugstore where I buy concealer, mascara, Pepcid AC( for the dog, “whos got” frequent upset stomachs from eating weird shit she observes on strolls ), and the latest issue of Vogue. $54.08
4: 15 p.m. — Back home I burrow into some blankets on the couch and read my new book, Washington Black by Esi Edugyan, with a dog snout resting on my foot.
6 p. m. — L. get home early from run and takes the dog for a walk. While they’re run, I get started making a simple stir-fry for dinner with veggies we have to use up: mushrooms, zucchini, bok choy, onion, and peppers. I make a sauce of soy sauce, chili paste, mirin, ginger, and sesame petroleum, and serve the dish on rice.
7: 30 p.m. — We were going to meet friends at a pub in our neighborhood, but the climate is crappy, and we’re both beat after a long week. We open a bottle of cabernet sauvignon that L. brought home, eat our stir-fry, and watch Roma on Netflix. We both head to bed around midnight.
Daily Total: $92.11
Day Six
8 a. m. — L. is out the door early because he’s helping a friend with some home renovations today. I have a slower start to the day, cuddling in bed with the dog until she gets too antsy to stay still any longer, at which point I take her for a walk. We head to a new location today. I drive us to a river trail, and we spend over an hour walking the frozen banks. One of us daydreams about vacation plans, and the other chases field mice.
10 a. m. — Back at home I give the dog breakfast, stimulate myself a cup of coffee and some soft scrambled eggs, which I feed with a piece of sourdough toast and an orange.
11 a. m. — I hop in the shower and get myself ready for a busy day: I’m running a double transformation at the bar. This is very unusual for me — I usually work one six-ish hour transformation per week. On my style to the metro, I stop at a juice store and buy a bougie green juice so I can get those nutrients in while I’m at work. I get a combination of kale, celery, apple, lemon, romaine, cucumber, parsley, and dandelion greens. $9.89
6 p. m. — The bar has been busy all day, and I take a quick break for dinner before getting back to it. I order a salad so I can get my protein and veggie fixing without get too full. I dislike being stuffed when I have to run around on my feet all night. I get 50% off the price of my meal. $5.71
11 p. m. — The chaos continues through the evening, and I finally get cut around 11. I’m supposed to go to a friend’s house party after, but I’m depleted, and I didn’t think I’d be working this late. I text my unhappiness and then have a faculty pint at the bar. It’s nice to get by my feet. Between tips and wages, I made around $380 today, so I again justify taking a cab home ($ 19.01+$ 4 tip-off ). $23.01
12: 45 a.m. — I’m back home and plan to go to sleep, but my intellect is still racing from my busy night. I watch a couple episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine until my eyelids get heavy. I head to bed around 2 a.m.
Daily Total: $38.61
Day Seven
8 a. m. — I wake up earlier than expected, and I can hear L. getting ready for his basketball game. I’m not the greatest sleeper, so I figure I’m probably up for the working day. I take the dog to our local schoolyard for a running because it’s rainy and there’s a gale alerting in effect.
9 a. m. — I give the dog breakfast and stimulate myself a pot of Earl Grey and scrambled eggs. Then I sit down to work on some personal writing projects. I went to school for journalism, and while I don’t work in hard news anymore, I do still write essays and short fiction. My income from it is unpredictable, so I don’t factor that money into my earnings. I usually expend a lot more day on these projects, but it was tough this week because of my extra changes at the bar.
11 a. m. — I’m not being as productive as I’d like and decide to put my work away instead of pushing through. Today is my only day off this week, so I try to be a bit more forgiving of how I’m feeling, which is tired and unmotivated. Instead, I read more of my book with some Vogue infringes for variety.
12: 30 p.m. — I decide to go shopping before the wind really picks up this afternoon. For some reason, I find wind cyclones scaring. I go to the liquor store and buy a bottle of bubbly, because the Oscars are tonight and they demand a bit of luxury ($ 22.82 ). I assure a man asking questions change who is frequently in the neighborhood. Whenever I assure him I give him change, but I don’t have any on me today so I give him a$ 5 bill, and we chat a bit. $27.82
12: 45 p.m. — I go to the butcher shop, where I get chicken breast on sale and trout ($ 15.91 ). Then I stop at a cheese shop for brie that’s on special and a baguette ($ 7.61 ). Next, I head to a fruit and veggie store to pick up broccoli, tomato, cucumber, bok choy, mushrooms, avocados, grapefruit, banana, grapes, eggs, and almond milk ($ 29.51 ). And lastly, I go to a Polish deli for a big package of pierogies ($ 5.32 ). $58.35
2 p. m. — Back home, I unload the groceries. For lunch, I fix a little plate of baguette slicings, a hunk of brie, grapes, and cucumber slices. I also have a wee thimbleful of leftover red wine to accompany it, so I can imagine I’m picnicking in France instead of holed up in my apartment. Then I get back to reading my book.
3 p. m. — L. texts be asserted that his team is going out for a pint after today’s games, and I’m secretly happy for more alone time. I love living with my boyfriend, but I’m an introvert at heart and sometimes miss the dependable solitude of living alone. I operate a bath, illuminated a bunch of candles, and select a classical music playlist on Spotify. I hang out in the tub for a while and wash my hair while I’m in there so I won’t need to do it tomorrow before a party in the evening.
5 p. m. — L. gets home and cleans the apartment while I read more of my volume. I also place an online order for household items that are running low. I get dish soap, hand soap, puppy turd pouches, probiotics, and Palo Santo sticks. $72.26
5: 15 p.m. — After browsing the internet using a bit, I decide to finally buy a one-piece bathing suit from a local designer that I’ve been eyeing for some time. I’d like to start swimming at the local community center pond for exercising, and I need a one-piece suit to do that. $144.53
7 p. m. — We had originally planned to have friends over for an Oscars viewing shindig, but we realise earlier today that we forgot to invite them over. Oops! It’s a party of two instead, so we make a salad and caramelize some onions to go with the pierogies we heat up and serve with dollops of sour cream. We pop some popcorn, then pop the bubbly and shamelessly judge the outfits of famous people while we sit in our sweatpants, stuffing our faces. I head to bed around 12:30 a.m. after watching the full show.
Daily Total: $302.96

RYDER RIPPS
Internet Archaeology seeks to explore, recover, archive and showcase the graphic artifacts found within earlier Internet Culture. Established in 2009, the chief purpose of Internet Archaeology is to preserve these artifacts and acknowledge their importance in understanding the beginnings and birth of an Internet Culture. We focus on graphic artifacts only, with the belief that images are most culturally revealing and immediate. Most of the files in our archive are in either JPG or GIF format and are categorized by either still or moving image, they are then arranged in various thematic subcategories. Currently, a major focus of Internet Archaeology is on the archiving and indexing of images found on Geocities websites, as their existence has been terminated by parent company Yahoo; who discontinued GeoCities operation on October 26, 2009. Internet Archaeology is an ongoing effort which puts preservation paramount. Unlike traditional archaeology, where physical artifacts are unearthed; Internet Archaeology's artifacts are digital, thus more temporal and transient. Yet we believe that these artifacts are no less important than say the cave paintings of Lascaux. They reveal the origins of a now ubiquitous Internet Culture; showing where we have been and how far we have come.

Computer skills do not usually correlate with a strong fashion sense. So when Nicola Formichetti, Lady Gaga’s former stylist and the current artistic director for Diesel, met a whiz kid named Ryder Ripps four years ago, he expected a geek.
Instead, “he turned up wearing like, almost hot pants — a crazy outfit with a mohawk,” Mr. Formichetti said. “And he looked so cool. I was like, ‘You’re Ryder?’ ”
Yet when Mr. Ripps sat down at a computer and began coding, there was no mistaking his true identity. “It really looked like Picasso painting, or like Beethoven playing his piano,” Mr. Formichetti said. “He looked like this mad scientist writing all these codes on the computer and just creating all these visuals that were really twisted.”
Mr. Ripps, the 27-year-old artist, programmer and creative director, is the consummate Internet cool kid, as fluent in HTML and JavaScript as in the language of conceptual art. Unlike most techies who hail from computer or business backgrounds, Mr. Ripps arose from the fashion and art worlds.
He was a founder of the influential online art community Dump.fm, and has made a name for himself with imaginative cyberpranks, including a 2012 website, WhoDat.biz, that pretended to be associated with Kanye West.
As the creative director of the digital agency OKFocus, Mr. Ripps and his place at the increasingly chic nexus of art and technology have attracted clients like Nike and Red Bull. His programming know-how and hyperactive digital-native sensibility have made him a sought-out adviser to creative professionals like Mr. Formichetti, with whom he is working on a “digital experience” for Diesel.
Mr. Ripps has also designed websites for the musician M.I.A. and the hip-hop producer Mike Will Made It, and collaborated with the video artist Ryan Trecartin. “He is definitely somebody who I feel like I find myself consulting when I want to talk out an idea that he particularly has the knowledge space for,” said Mr. Trecartin, who met Mr. Ripps in 2010.
At the time, Mr. Trecartin was struggling to find high-resolution images of corporate logos for a project for W magazine. A mutual friend introduced him to Mr. Ripps, who quickly tracked down the images. “He had all these different tools he’d developed where he can mine different Asian websites,” Mr. Trecartin said. The collaboration went beyond simply tech support. “He’s very generous with his ideas,” Mr. Trecartin said. “It was like collaborating with any artist. He just happened to be a programmer.”
Mr. Ripps’s ability to straddle disparate worlds springs from years of trolling the forgotten corners of the web. “The Internet is just a ton of different people,” he said. “So, being good at knowing how to equally access these people to speak to them is being good at the Internet.”
Born in New York City to the designer Helene Verin and the painter Rodney Ripps, Mr. Ripps was exposed to old-school creativity at an early age. But it was the freewheeling Internet of the mid-’90s that captured his imagination. He hung out with hackers in AOL chat rooms and lurked on video-game message boards. He learned HTML at a computer camp and used his skills to project a confidence online that he didn’t have in the real world.
“In real life I was a really shy 10-year-old kid with arty parents,” he said. “Online I was someone who was powerful, who could create things that people saw immediately.”
In 2011, three years after graduating from the New School with a degree in media studies, Mr. Ripps founded OKFocus with the artist and programmer Jonathan Vingiano to subsidize his less-than-lucrative art career. OKFocus’s work is infused with both Mr. Ripps’s sincere belief in the liberating potential of the Internet and the mischievousness of early AOL hackerscc. Its websites are loud, playful and often disorienting.
A good website, Mr. Ripps said, “is one that understands that users are sitting there, possibly in their underwear, in a dark cave, feeling alone together. One that can connect with people on that level. It’s like with music, like when you listen to a song and you cry because it understands you.”
This approach has attracted hip brands that see their websites as a storefront window onto youth culture. “Nowadays, web know-how isn’t enough,” said Virgil Abloh, the creative director for Mr. West and a founder of the streetwear brand Been Trill, whose website OKFocus designed. “How web design can resonate with culture is what Ryder and OKFocus excel at.”
Mr. Ripps’s skill at manipulating culture in the digital age is perhaps best exemplified by his various online stunts.
In 2012, OKFocus developed a multiplayer game in which users compete to find a single pixel, and in late 2013, it garnered attention with Drake Shake, an app that pastes a random image of the rapper Drake on any photo when users shake their iPhones. The app went viral; at one point, Drake himself posted an Instagram photo using the app, perhaps unaware that Mr. Ripps had forged a note to Apple granting himself permission to use Drake’s trademark.
He signed the forged letter “Ralph Romeo.” “Which is a fake name I use sometime because it’s very illustrious and romantic,” he said.
The Internet has let Mr. Ripps assume many creative roles, not all of them rooted in real life.
For years, creative agencies shaped the look and feel of commerce from entirely behind the scenes, like ad Wizards of Oz. But as marketing has moved from print and television to the internet, many of these companies have moved into the public eye, no longer simply peddling others’ products but also their own distinct identities. Here, in that spirit, we’ve asked three smart groups who are making boundary-pushing work at the intersections of art and commerce to make an ad for themselves. These three aren’t all creative agencies per se—OKFocus is, while The Jogging is more like an artist-run gallery and to.be is a tool for creative expression—but their output shares a critical approach to the digital medium in which they’re all working, and a careful understanding of how art gets disseminated on the internet. And so, even at the margins of the marketplace, their experiments might soon have a big impact.

Founders: Ryder Ripps, Jules Laplace, Jonathan Vingiano
Years in business: Three
Employees: Three, plus a network of freelancers
Elevator pitch: “Internet Legends/Tyrants of Conceptual and Technological Alacrity” okfocus
Ryder Ripps started OKFocus to make money. As an artist, he got early attention for projects like Internet Archeology, a website dedicated to curating the art history of the internet, but Ripps says he “didn’t want to pursue an art career full time.” Instead, he took his interests in programming and branding and built an entirely different type of creative practice: a full service digital agency. Along with a couple of like-minded programmers, Ripps created OKFocus to apply his conceptual ideas about business to real world companies. “I really enjoy the idea of understanding corporate America from the inside,” he says. Unlike other artists, who flirt with the mechanics or symbols of the corporate world, OKFocus is not simply playing at advertising. They are in business. Part of their strategy has been starting attention-grabbing, single-serve sites like newmoticons.com, a random emoticon generator, but the big bucks are in projects for corporate clients like Nike, including a recently designed app that uses a smartphone’s accelerometer to give a 360-degree augmented reality view of Nike’s London store/exhibition space, 1948. OKFocus’ most telling alliance has been with #BeenTrill, the brand from Virgil Abloh and the Kanye West camp for whom they’ve been doing digital creative direction. As their art for the previous page suggests, OKFocus has a strong affinity for the trappings of hip-hop, which is fitting: the rap game seems to not have a problem blurring the distinctions between art and hyperactive commerce, allowing for the co-existence of these two opposing forces. Given Ripps’ left-field pedigree, OKFocus could’ve just been making projects for internet art fans, but maybe the drive to ball out in the straight world is more interesting—and even, perhaps, more honest. hg
How does the internet make you feel?
One body of his work adds to the Internet’s perpetual swarm, the other freezes time to reflect on the deluge of images and information we consume. Artist, designer, philosopher and prankster, Ryder Ripps makes work both for and about our digital lives. His site design for M.I.A. and work with Ryan Trecartin for W are high profile, but collaborating with strangers and passersby online is what Ripps finds most rewarding. Dump.fm, his aesthetically influential brainchild, is a real-time site where people communicate with images, riffing with each other using pictures, conversing with visual content. He is currently developing Solid State Tomb, tombstones embedded with solid state drives holding the collected ephemera and memories of a life. These are then meant to be accessed and shared with future generations of family, also acting as a historical document for the greater culture. Upcoming collaborations include an Internet project with people too famous to name and an installation with Mark Essen and Thunderhorse Video at Eyebeam gallery.

A few posts back, our friend Nancy made a comment.  She wanted to know where I shop. It was funny because I also received a couple of emails asking me the same question.
So, here goes–95 percent of my wardrobe comes from J. Crew.  I’m very brand loyal to this company.  Think back in retail history ladies.  Way back. Before online shopping.  Back to the days of mail order.  Remember those days?
I would eagerly wait for the mailman to deliver my favorite catalogs. Chadwick’s of Boston, Tweeds, and the mother of all catalogs—the J. Crew catalog!
This is from the Spring 1987 J. Crew Catalog. Some things never change.  The clothing is pretty much the same. And that is why I love J. Crew!
I’ve been a customer since 1983.  There have been years where the pickings were slim and years when I wanted everything and anything I could get my crossed-eyes upon.
And Jenna Lyon’s vision of the edgy catalogs of the present day gets on my last nerve. But I still love the clothing that J. Crew and J. Crew Factory have to offer.
Yes. Jenna Lyons drives me up a wall. I’m sorry but those pants are ridiculous looking.  The news of her deciding to leave J. Crew did not make me sad. At all.
Crew’s clothing is my style.  It’s my comfort zone.  It’s what I feel good in.  And, for the most part, the quality is good.
One of my favorite looks from J. Crew–head to toe!  A black Tippi Sweater, Stewart plaid pants–and one of the few J. Crew pairs of shoes I have. Dulci kitten heels.
I stick to the basics. Nothing outlandish. I love the Pixie and Marti pants. I am not a fan of J. Crew’s jeans however.  I love the sweaters although there have been seasons of lesser-quality goods.
Some of my Pixie, Marti and City Pants from J. Crew. There’s a lot more too!
I love the cuts of the blazers from Crew.  I’m a fan of the button-down shirts and the turtlenecks—except the flimsy cotton ones that stretch out
Some of the blazers I have collected from J. Crew over the years...
…and more–Lady Jackets and plaid. What’s not to love??
I’m also a fan of the striped fabric when the cuffs are turned up. It’s little things like that that I love!
Three guesses as to where my costume jewelry is purchased!
But I know and am familiar with J. Crew’s clothing.  The J. Crew Pencil skirts fit my body well.
See what I mean?  Scarf from J. Crew, sweater and pencil skirt from J. Crew. The Number 2 Pencil skirt is one of my faves!
I’m not one for fussy dressing. I like my solids. They are easier to mix and match.  I’ll do stripes. And we all know that I will do plaids on any occasion. But I tend to stick to a more classic look.
With shoes, I’ll stick to shops other than J. Crew.  My foot is too narrow for most of the brand’s shoes.
Here’s a bit of what I have from J. Crew.
An sampling of button-down shirts–the striped tunic is Tory Burch–how did it sneak in there?
One of two draws full of sweaters. All from J. Crew.
No. It isn’t sheets. It’s the white dress shirts I have from J. Crew.
Printed Campbell pants and a roll-neck sweater
My other favorite plaid pants and green Tippi Turtleneck..
OK–this is the last one.  I love this leopard skirt too.
Nordstrom is another store that I shop.  Surprisingly, I don’t buy many clothes there. I’ll stick to shoes and boots and bags.   I make my good boot purchases during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.
If you have the time, a couple of hours spent purusing Nordstrom Rack can produce great buys!
I have better luck at Nordstrom Rack. Especially with jeans. The variety of jeans at Nordstrom Rack is terrific.  I purchased quite a few of my beloved AG jeans at Rack.  And quite a few pairs of shoes too!
This leather Longchamp bag was my deal of the century at Nordstrom Rack a few years back. I saw it and ran up to the checkout. It was about $100. I wear this a lot!!
Two more Nordstrom deals. The bag is from Nordstrom. Rebecca Minkoff. Someone returned it and it went over to the sale table. I grabbed it!  The shoes are from Nordstrom Rack and were the second deal of the century. I actually fell in love with these shoes when Susan from Une Femme d’un Certain Age posted them on her blog. They are Paul Green and at $350 were out of my price line.  I happened to be at Nordstrom Rack one day and the shoes were there. In my size.  I think they were $107. and I had a $50 gift card. Great day in the mornin’!!
In all honesty, as much as I enjoy shopping, I love to make my purchases during sales. I don’t buy at retail prices.
I don’t buy luxury brands either. I am very much aware of my budget and what I cannot afford.
Leather Longchamp bags are the closest to luxury that I will buy.
OK. Bonaparte may have given me the red Longchamp bag for my birthday last year, but he made the purchase at Nordstrom!
And when we travel to France, I’ll keep my purchases purely to bags, shoes and my beloved Rondini sandals.  My body is just way too curvy for a European fit—so I avoid clothing for the most part.
Two examples of shopping during traveling. Rondini sandals and Repetto ballet flats. Every trip to France during the summer months means another pair of sandals. The price is great because the sandals are custom made and last forever.  BTW, the shirt is J. Crew and the jeans are AG! But look–this is an outfit that I can wear till I’m 85!
When it comes to buying clothing, it really helps to really know your body type and what works for you.  Boyfriend jeans and cargo pants look horrific on me.  Skinny and legging jeans work better for my body.
Old Navy is great–great for basics like plain tee shirts and lets hope their iconic t-shirt dresses are never disontinued..
Best $15 I’ve ever spent. This t-shirt dress from Old Navy can be worn all year.  I have five of them–just in case it is discontinued!
I’m not having a good Gap year. I purchased a pair of jeans but the offerings were better in the past.
And then there’s Lilly for the bright summer dresses. But I think I’m going to check out the consignment shops for a bit of her brightness this year. I don’t want to pay full price!
Surprisingly, the outfit I wore today —I loved!!  And I didn’t wear one item from J. Crew. My skirt was about four years old from GAP, the sweater was a cardigan I wore backwards because I liked it better that way.  The scarf was one I stole from Oona—she purchased it at Target a couple of years ago and the denim jacket was from Kut From The Kloth. I purchased this jacket when I was heavier. It’s a size Large. But it fits great due to the amount of stretch.
Today’s OOTD. And not one item from J. Crew!  The skirt, from GAP, is a great fit–it’s a stretch fabric and fits the curves beautifully.  I don’t have a white crew neck sweater so I wore this cardigan backwards. I don’t know what it is that makes me love this outfit so much. Yes I do. It looks great on me. And ladies! Admit when you know an outfit looks great! Don’t be shy!
And that is also why I try everything on. In multiple sizes. One brand’s size 6 could be another’s size 8 or 10.  I don’t pay much attention to the numbers on the tags these days.
I don’t get rid of a lot of clothing simply because what I do have really isn’t trendy—the styles last for quite a few years.
Online shopping for me?  Sometimes.  I shop J. Crew online when I am absolutely sure of the sizing of the item—such as Pixie Pants and blazers.  I’ve taken my chances once ordering on Zulily and was lucky.
My one-time online purchase from Zulily. $29.99 and I was very pleased with this tunic. I don’t wear it often –although I should wear it mor!
I took a chance recently with “6PM“—I purchased a pair of AG Jeans and they were fine—I know my size in AG.
A coupla pair of AG Jeans. These are GREAT jeans–but shop around for the best price!
However, I’m better taking the time early on a Saturday morning, wearing comfy clothing and good underwear and spending the time in stores. It can take me four hours to find the right shirt. And that’s ok because when I take the time, I know that I’ll make a purchase I’ll have for a long time.
Going shopping? It’s serious business so dress for comfort!  Wear comfortable shoes too!
Shopping for clothing should be treated seriously.  After all, when you are dressed in clothing that you love and that you feel great in, it makes your day a lot better.
Don’t you think?  How do you shop?  Where do you shop?  Malls, small boutiques.  Share your tips in the comments—it’ll be fun!
Sometimes shopping can be challenging if there is a really great sale going on. People pushing and shoving–it’s a real jungle and the song that plays in my mind is by CCR “Run Through The Jungle”!!
