‘Paid for It’ by Chesty Matt
Here’s ‘Paid for It’ by “Chesty Matt”. Joe Matt made a little satire of Chester Brown’s ‘Paying for It” by reorganizing the panels and writing new word balloons. When I saw this up for sale it blew my little mind; “A NEW COMIC BOOK FROM JOE MATT?!?!?” This has got to be the only thing published by Joe Matt in the past 10 years and he didn’t even draw it. Wait, he did a thing in that Drawn and Quarterly anniversary thing, too, but still; NOTHING FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS?? As an angsty oversexed teen I got into his comic book Peepshow right away. First it was the short, jam packed, auto bio strips in Kitchen Sink stuff and I followed along all the way to that strange period where he and Chester Brown and Seth were all putting each other into their auto bio stuff and it was full on fan boy geekdom for a young comix fan like me to watch those dudes riff on each other while also creating some damn good comic books. Peepshow, at the time, taught me a lot of stuff. First, it taught me that the underground guys could not put out a monthly comic book like the mainstream guys, or Dave Sim, could. The wait in between issues of Joe Matt comic books was agonizingly long. First it was a few issues a year and then it went to a few years in between issues. It was frustratingly insane, you had to commit to being a Joe Matt fan. And that leads to the Joe Matt fans, the 2nd thing I learned about comix was the fan base and how us fans of the underground gotta be ten times worse than those comic con assholes who spend all year making their Adventure Time/Thor mashup costumes; how you gotta be OBSESSED to truly get into it. Joe Matt fans had to be frustratingly committed to wait so long between issues and keep buying them. His letters pages in the back of the book were the best. So many people hated him for his porn addiction and his depictions of it but damn if they weren’t lovingly following every issue because they were KEEPING TRACK, man. And then he started putting a couple fans in his comics and they got pissed off at the way he depicted them? It was fantastic. Maybe it was all a foreboding prediction of what would happen when we all got so much more connected with the internet and all the flame wars to come. I still don’t understand what the right stance to take is because it often seems that the same folks decrying people like Joe Matt on their tumblr are doing so in-between posting selfies of themselves giving blowjobs while in cosplay so what the fuck nothing makes sense any more. Where am I going with this? I’m rambling too much here. But, anyway, Joe Matt comics were so good and its been like 10 years since a Joe Matt comic and really its been even longer than that because the last Joe Matt comic doesn’t count so much for me because it was a meandering 4 issue run that took 4 years which was just him sitting in his bedroom talking about how much he masturbates and that was downright weird; though I still bought every copy. And now this little thing comes out and even though he’s not even drawing it and just re wording it to rip on his buddy its still funny as shit and classic Joe Matt and I love it. Its just good, its Dean Martin roast classic dirty good. And reading it I also think how much shit like even this little send up probably doesn’t fly with all the trends going on in the little SJW communities powering a lot of the zine scene these days, who knows. I loved it and you’ve totally got to be a dedicated fan of Chester Brown, Joe Matt, all that shit for it truly to elicit a hearty belly laugh and man am I just the fanboy this comic book was made for. Raise your hands if you own a copy of ‘Cerebus World Tour 1995’ when it came out because of its 20 pages of a Chester Brown/Dave Sim comic jam…
