Time is weird for zduhać bc they don't age while they sleep, and sometimes the line between sleeping and waking gets blurred. Ches was also put in a grave and asleep for 200+ years so he is. A man out of time, to say the least.

He is vaguely slavic; he speaks russian and serbian fluently (english as a verrryyyyy third language, he's only been learning for the last couple years, depending on the timeline. He's also recently started learning a little bit of french!). Though, he has claimed that he is neither russian nor serbian, so no one actually has any idea where the fuck he came from. He literally showed up on Mira's door one day with a letter addressed to her mother asking for help.

He works for Mira now in the bar she runs (as a bartender). Patrons seem to like him a lot - hes very amicable in a 'grandmother telling you stories' kind of way.

He has two living siblings, Alexander (older) and Nadia (younger). He does not seem to get along with either, but ESPECIALLY Alex - he tried to kill Alex on sight once lol.

Lore wise, no one knows for certain exactly what happened to him - how he lost his arm, what happened to his face, etc etc. He doesn't talk about it, nor does he want to. The only thing that is confirmed (and this is fun new lore i dont think i've shared!!!) is that he blames Alex for all of it.

After not seeing each other for a couple centuries, Alex came to Ches to beg for his help. During this reunion (which Charlie had to break up bc it immediately turned into a physical altercation lol), Ches made clear that 1. Alex was somehow responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people and 2. Whatever it was that Alex did, it directly resulted in Ches being tortured, losing his arm and becoming a zduhać.

Paper Cut has grown accustomed to the sound of foreign yet warm laughter. The flames that occupy the bonfire in front of him could only hope to rival such warmth. But the best thing about this kind of laughter is that sometimes, it would include his own. It’d make for a great journal entry and an even greater bandage.

“Leave it to J to get Dr. Cut of all people to leave his lil’ man cave.”

Another wave of laughter ensues, this time he joins in. He can’t deny the person’s claim - J’s siren call was the straw that broke the camel’s back. But he has no regrets; even with all the unfamiliar faces and voices, he feels like he’s finally home.

The laughter never seems to die down. That observation can be attributed to the fact that J being the center of attention – but he almost always is the center of attention, just how he likes his social interactions to be. But the best part is that he doesn’t even have to try. Paper Cut supposes that’s just how it is when everyone in the neighborhood knows your name and your game. But in a way, Paper Cut himself also garnered such a reputation.

Paper Cut’s job is to heal paper cuts and beyond. Even if he doesn’t believe it, his fame has been the consequence of his own choices. Not charging patients cash for medical services was and will always be what makes him infamous. It’d be abnormal if it was simply free but the strange charging fee of a piece of paper for every session would’ve been enough for people to call him crazy.

You can call him a quack all you want but at the end of the day, he gets the job done – this is what Joe thinks of his work ethics. Joe was more concerned that he wasn’t taking care of his own health. After all, the doctor can’t heal if he himself is sick, right?

Everyone there knows that there’s some kind of tension between the two (or at least, almost everyone - one guy insists that they’re simply “very close friends”). They’d rather not assume but they’ve grown somewhat impatient waiting for their friendship to eventually transform into a romance. And they have to admit, the two men make good in-group gossip material.

As soon as J is done with his arduous task, he plops down next to Paper Cut with a mug of his own, which he extends towards his seatmate. Paper Cut chuckles and clinks his mug with J’s to humor him. It works, as J lets out a satisfied laugh. But J is pleasantly surprised when Paper Cut moves to imitate him but with his own other seatmate, Mercuria, instead. And she also humors him.

Before long, the air is filled with that warm, foreign laughter again as people clink their mugs affectionately. Paper Cut closes his eyes, submerging himself in an orchestra of delight.

Do we expect great emotional regulation and self-awareness from an elementary schooler in an abusive household? on that same note, hazel should also be held accountable for the same things, like saying devs problems werent that deep and having wanda, a FAIRY GODPARENT, basically agree??? also when she was like "oh friends work things out" i didnt hear no apology for not hearing dev out or at least for leaving him in the dark on if theyre friends or not. and the thing is i dont expect her to do that on her own, because shes 10, but theyre fictional 10 year olds who will have more maturity than most real kids either way, so like... yknow?

additionally its kind of a double standard either way, if you dont expect hazel to act mature, why on gods green earth would you expect DEV to??? and hazel, compared to dev, has people to guide her the right way and people that are patient with her, meanwhile dev doesnt get that, the most hes ever gotten is hazel and THATS NOT HAZELS JOB!!! im not saying the writers are claiming it is, its just that its frustrating that the writing has ended up with her feeling like the only person who really gives a damn yknow

Okay this is probably stupid and pointless but WHATEVER i'm embaracing the cringe. This is a rant about Lae'zel's evil qualities BECAUSE SHE'S MY WIFE AND IM STARTING TO GET ANNOYED at people either ignoring that side of her or hating her because of it!! I've seen some people make the claim that folks only think Lae'zel is cruel and selfish because they never bothered to keep her in their party for long enough to see the variety of facets of her character, and i'm just gonna say this: Lae'zel hasn't left my party i think even once since she joined, and I can confirm that she definitely is cruel and selfish. You have to remember that Lae'zel has essentially spent her whole life drilling "kindness is weakness, violence is of virtue, intimidation is your weapon, your only purpose is to Ascend no matter how bloody a path you must carve along the way" into her head bc that's the only way she knows how to survive

And this is entirely reflected in her actions, how she treats the player and the other companions, and what she approves/disapproves of— especially in the early hours of the game before she's had much room to develop at all. She likes when the player is violent for the sake of furthering themselves, and sometimes even when it's just for fun (i.e. torturing Liam for no reason other than entertaining some goblins). she likes when the player is intimidating to the point of comical. She likes when the player treats the people around them like scum that are beneath them. She likes when the player puts their own needs before others. I know this because i'm playing a character that is typically aligned with this kind of behavior, and Lae'zel absolutely loves it to the point of admiration and obsession (her words). from my understanding it's pretty easy to foster a neutral to positive relationship with Lae'zel even on a good aligned character because that's the way the game works. It's actually REALLY hard to get your character on a companion's bad side. But getting Lae'zel to admire you is going to be hard too if you aren't willing to be at least a little wicked and cruel, forsaking compassion from time to time!!!!!

and I dont know..... i guess when I see posts where people try to convince us that she cares from the start and she isn't ALL THAT BAD in the beginning I feel like does a lot of disservice to her character and JUST how much she grows over the course of the game. Like no, she doesnt actually care about the players and the companions at the very beginning, because not only are they strangers that she's known for a couple days after spending a lifetime of associating caring with frailty, but also because she has no actual reason to. Lae'zel is lawful and logical, and to care for somebody at this point in her story is illogical. the only reason why she should want the player and companions alive is A) because of their knowledge of Faerun and B) so she has as much manpower as possible to cut down her foes quickly, minimizing the chance of ceremorphosis creeping up on them. They are her only chance at being able to actually navigate this world completely foreign to her without losing her mind and to get to the Creche so she can continue seeking her true purpose: ASCENSION. and once they get to the Creche she gets MAD if the player tries to cure themselves before her. She threatens to leave. she definitely is THAT BAD and it RULES SORRY!!

it isn't until much later in the story that she is able to show even a glimmer of empathy towards the struggles of the companions i.e. Gale and Shadowheart. That in my opinion, although also depending on the player's actions, is the entire purpose of her arc having MAJOR developments a bit earlier than most of the companions— so that she can start to challenge herself and her own faith much earlier and subconsciously in the process understand some of the other companions crises of faith too

Like. man. i just don't understand why some people are so unwilling to admit to themselves that Lae'zel is not a good person, at least definitely not at the start of the game. i guess it's because they view that as a bad thing? but to me personally it's what makes her SO INTERESTING and why I immediately latched onto her. Lae'zel easily has the most ties to the main narrative out of all the characters in the game, she's arguably the most important companion in the game, and she's pretty consistently been a centerpiece in Larian's marketing for it. but she essentially has NONE of the makings of a traditional hero in a personality and moral sense. She's nasty, she's brutal, she's sadistic, she's ignorant, she's full of herself, she's brash. I love that side of her so much and i love that subversion of what we would typically expect from a character who's constantly at the forefront of an adventure story like BG3's. just completely a product of her own environment, and justifiably so, when you realize the historical agony of her people and the horrors they had to overcome

I've torn flesh from monsters and men. I've laughed as they suffered.

Once you really start to understand these fundamental parts of her character and like. ACTUALLY ACCEPT THEM as a core part of her identity..... you really start to see that she's also brave, and clever, and intelligent, and has an intense love for her people and culture, and is actually HILARIOUS (both intentionally and unintentionally). When she really lets the player in too, specifically in her romance, and you get the privilege of watching her let her guard down, it feels like something you're not meant to see and like you're infringing on a private moment. because she's genuinely so sweet and warm in these moments and she's only really let the player character access that part of her because she trusts them, not YOU. And to Lae'zel, this is probably the first time in her life she's ever trusted someone..... and she's probably damning herself for it. Trying to blame it on an obsessive and carnal lust with no real emotions or love involved. Because she's not a good person, and she's not a person who trusts and loves. and it's so good and relatable and well-written it makes me want to SCREAM 😭😭

But you... I don't want to hurt you. I want to protect you.

Just. I DONT KNOW. IM RAMBLING AT THIS POINT BUT....... LAE'ZEL MY LOVE!!!!!! johann pachelbel was not one of the great composers we studied in school, and history was not kind to his work. thus, his Canon was lost to time until being written down sometime in the 1920s, but for some reason i am unable to discern from wikipedia, it was not recorded until the 40s.

a 1968 performance of the piece brought it to the public eye, and it was an immediate success. that same year, a greek band called aphrodite's child released a baroque rock cover of it (its kind of incomprehensible lyrically but it's fun) and not long after a spanish band called pop tops also did a cover of the piece, called oh lord why lord. i like this one better personally

anon from yesterday n yea i watched it earlier, overall p much what i expected . i thought kaitlins acting was rly good in particular in the scene where dennis was monologuing abt their childhood n i think it provided interesting insight into her as a character nd how dennis can affect her but th misogynistic speeches were just a little 2 real for me so i just kinda sat thru them like uhh …. okay then! bc they were jst sooo aggressively vitriolic. like, sure, you’re not supposed to agree with dennis, but at the same time, none of it was being said in a comedic way yk. it was just dennis repeating real things ppl actually think and say abt women

yeah so much of the episode had me sitting there stone faced. which isnt really a great thing for a comedy show. in terms of lore I like the episode because it provides some more insight into the trash twins dynamic. and also it was a dee centric episode (finally!).

but imo I think the issue comes from the fact they are trying to do three things at once.

1: use the characters as vessels for social satire, in this case satirising the way men treat women's sports and also the way they try and negatively define the relationships between women.

but also 2: create interesting and deep characters that feel human. the gang are deeply flawed but you do connect with them.

and finally 3: make it all funny.

and sometimes these three things can work together well. but sometimes they can clash.

for example:

they were trying to depict the way men treat women's sports. and lots of things about it was effective. it felt viscerally uncomfortable. you could really empathise with dee and how small she felt in that moment. it said some interesting things about how women are people who are going have conflict with one another but their inter-personal relationships aren't entirely positive or negative. they are complex.

but none of that was particularly funny. or, as a woman who rlly likes dee, enjoyable. (and you could also argue that it didnt achieve anything - ill get to that later)

it also felt less like an exploration of the trash twins as siblings, and more like an exploration of men vs women. which is okay, because in this instance they were using their dynamic as a means to portray an issue. but when they do that, it is often at the expense of making them feel human. or at least making them feel like their own characters.

and then theres the whole thing about whether satire is effective if it is just someone touting bigoted language with no real subversion. (this shit is confusing so feel free to disagree with me if ive said it wrong)

I think I would've loved the episode sooooo much more if there was more explicit subversion of the stuff dennis was saying. for example, the waitress kicks the punching bag and is great at it. but then dennis beats her. when I watched that, I presumed it would be revealed that it was part of the waitress's plan to make dennis hurt himself, so they could win. but that was never said, I dont think. and also at the end: the waitress says she doesnt like womens sports. which is something dennis said earlier. and on one hand, that is completely fine because the whole point is that women arent a monolith. they have differing opinions about women's sport.

but then again, why does dee just stand there and take it? she was beaten down throughout the episode, and at the last moment had a tiny victory. she overcame her internal obstacles. but her victory was subverted and turned bitter because she received no external validation. (which is interesting from a dee lore stand point but not satisfying as the audience) so that was aim 3, being funny, getting in the way. they went for a punchline, which slightly ruined the effectiveness of the satire. because dennis's claims were only temporarily subverted. in fact, his misogyny about women's sports was actually reinforced by the ending.

so aim 3, being funny, got in the way of the satire and also the portrayal of the waitress's character. despite being seen as multi-faceted throughout the episode, at the end her motivations and character becomes secondary to a punchline. why would the waitress do all that if she didnt care about sport? (im suppressing my deetress instincts rn) why would she stay? why did dee not question why she said that? whatever it achieved, it definitely made dee's character more tragic.

so ultimately this episode is fascinating because I think most of the issues with it, you could argue, are subjective. you could argue that sacrificing humour for a serious and uncomfortable depiction of misogyny (like in the gutter ball scene) is fine. or you could have even found that scene hilarious. and you could argue that because the ending is funny, it is fine to negate the other two main aims. and you could even argue that the ending is actually brilliant because it subverts the sports movie stereotype and is a more accurate portrayal of the experiences of women in sport!

I hope I dont seem like im just shitting on the episode. I liked lots of it. and ill probably be talking about its implications with dee and her relationship with dennis for ages. but yeah idk. I could argue about this in circles forever.

but tldr: weird episode. some good bits, some bad bits. and also the good bits could be bad bits and the bad bits could be good bits. depending on your priorities / what you want the show to be.

ok so. i know people hate ai here, at least in its current capitalism driven form. we all know the discourse points, im not gonna rehash the existing arguments for or against ai bc thats not the point of this post. this post is only for asking a question about something i really really dont get

what makes creativity unique to humans?

and, i think i should write about my own view on this so that the question and the intent behind the question is completely clear. im not here with a truly formed opinion and trying to vouch for anything. im looking for other perspectives

first thing you need to know about me is that im on the autism spectrum. the second is that im a muslim. these two things inform most of the base of my thinking and decision making. and also science, i guess. i AM still an engineer

so, someone claiming to be muslim, to believe in a single and all powerful creator, asking a question about the uniqueness of humanity might seem weird. but, “causality” is very much a core of islam. everything that happens have a cause, and yes this goes for every “supernatural” looking event as well. yes, god is making the world turn and the rain fall and the flowers bloom and the sun set and so on. yes these all have their own causes in the form of physical laws. its important to understand that these causes do not negate the role of god, it just negates the ways to “prove” the existence of a creator. which. isnt relevant to this topic so i should rerail

so. causes. human body, human brain, also has them. 

our eyes are incredible. our ears, hands, livers, the whole deal. its all incredible. they are miracles. but, they are not magical. its all still working according to physical laws.

im a computer vision engineer, so lets take our visual system for example. the pupils of our eyes are, basically, small holes for light to get in. this light, drops on the retina, and is converted to electrical signals, which are then carried to the related parts of the brain via the optic nerves. this is the complex part, which i do not know enough about to get into, begins. all i know is that its a bunch of math. our brains are constantly doing calculus and using multiple very complex algorithms to give meaning to the images our eyes capture.

what i do for my job is a very crude version of this. sometimes i use deep learning to help with more sophisticated problems as well. but basically, all our projects have the same parts: a camera/eye, some cabling/neurons, and a computer/brain. and sometimes robotic hands too. those are usually not the parts im dealing with.

and honestly, most of the computer technology is like this. from the very start from back in the 20th century, the basis was always how the brain works, either intentionally, or unintentionally. the way it resembles our brain kept evolving, and now we have deep learning algorithms. which, according to my preschool education major ex-roommate, work very similar to how children learn. you just keep showing the program data and tell it what that specific piece of data is about, and it draws its own conclusions about what “makes” that data. honestly, one of my biggest gripes about working with these systems is that i dont need to code or debug as much as my other projects. if there’s something wrong, 99.99% of the time, its about the dataset

returning to the visual system again, the way digital vision systems and the human visual system works is so similar that, there have been recent studies and working prostheses for blind people that send the visuals from a camera directly to the patient’s brain. these systems still need a lot of work to be able to be used widely, but it proves that we can convert our digital data to signals that can be interpreted by our nervous system.

thats a lot of ranting to say basically 2 main things:

1. the human body isnt magical. it works according to existing physical laws, most of which we already understand. the way i see it, there’s no reason for us not to be able to understand exactly how our brains work. and this includes the concept of “creativity” as well (which i dont think we need to understand to replicate, but again, another topic. another rant.)

2. our technology already resembles us so much, and we keep improving upon what we have. i said before that the human body is a miracle, and honestly? i think what we can do with some plastic and some metal is also a miracle. if something is possible with the existing laws of physics, then it can be replicated using only metal and plastic. thats incredible.

and based on these two points, i cannot imagine a future where we cannot achieve AGI. and i cannot see a reason that makes us “unique” in the way that it cant be replicated

also, im pretty sure i can write all my thought processes in pseudocode and mathematical notation, so i do not see what prevents us from replicating a human brain. tho as i said, im autistic, so this could just be a case where my brain is the outlier.

i guess i lied. i guess i do have a formed opinion. the goal of this post stands, however. i really wanna see this from other people’s perspectives, and understand what these unique human qualities that cannot be broken down to maths and algorithms are. especially from people with brains that work differently from me

Guardian Spirit au

Danny is a Guardian Spirit, except Guardian Spirits in this au are truly terrifying.

They focus a lot more on the guarding aspect of being a Guardian Spirit then being comforting or approachable, so they look terrifying. Like a massive chimera of different animals and eldritch abomination looking stuff.

Guardian Spirits are generally some of the most powerful ghosts and most ghosts know not to mess with them unless you want to have a second funeral. They are also usually mistaken to be demons and malevolent spirits by humans even though they just want to guard the thing they are guarding and be left alone.

Appearances are deceiving in this case bc even though Guardian Spirits look terrifying as heck they are usually pretty docile and kind as long as you dont try to hurt/take the thing they are guarding.

For example Pandora is a Guardian Spirit, most Guardian Spirits are animalistic in appearance with Pandora being one of the few exceptions (though that doesnt mean they have less sentience or intelligence, they just look like animals and can usually talk as well)

Anyway back to Danny, because of the nature of his creation and of course his obsession his ghost half ends up being a Guardian Spirit. Unfortunately he drew the short end of the stick and instead of looking vaguely human in his ghost form like Pandora he looks absolutely terrifying.

He's about the size of a two story building (maybe a little bigger). He has huge feathery wings, a scorpion tail, is four legged with bird feet with sharp talons, has thick white fur all over the rest of his body, and of course he has an elk skull as a head. His eyes are still glowing green but it's just the iris and pupil, the selera is pitch black in the sunken eyes of the skull.

Thankfully he only looks like that in ghost form. Not so thankfully this monstrous appearance obviously doesn't help disprove his parents claim that all ghosts are emotionless monsters that need to be eradicated.

Protecting Amity park is easier in this au since most ghosts take one look at Danny's ghost form and just nope out of there. The exceptions being Skulker (who wants to catch Danny even more because he is a halfa AND a guardian spirit) and Box ghost who is just stupid about not angering incredibly powerful being.

Danny goes through an angsty faze of "am I a monster?" But his friends and soon his sister pull him out of that and when they meet Pandora and they find out that Danny is a Guardian Spirit the boy accepts and is happy with this part of himself.

The main threat to Danny in this au are his parents and the GIW since of course a giant ghost monster that appears from nowhere and disappears seemingly into thin air attracts more attention and seems like a bigger threat.

Meanwhile Danny is just trying to get by. Sometimes he goes through partial transformations that are troublesome to deal with without anyone noticing (these include: scorpion tail, the wings, having the top of the elk skull appear on his face sort of like a mask he can take that one off of his face and it dissipates but the other ones are actually part of his body)

In this au he meets other Guardian Spirits (tho Pandora is basically like his unofficial mentor/mom), has to avoid the GIW and his parents, has to try and convince the town that the scary looking huge chimera is NOT going to hurt anyone, and also deal with Vlad trying to capture him to work for him like his vultures do (Vlad has no idea Danny is the Guardian Spirit in this au, he is increasingly annoyed that this Guardian Spirit keeps foiling his plans to kill Jack)

Also I might throw in some Ghost king Danny just because I think Guardian Spirit!Danny would beat Pariah Darks ass. Plus the image of a crown that looks so tiny in comparison with Danny's huge elk skull head is just hilarious (tho I'd probably have it so the crown of fire changes based on the king so it would probably change to be big and intimidating to fit on Danny's ghost form's head, but change to a normal size whenever he changes back to human)

The partial transformations are caused bc Danny has to transform into his ghost form at least every few days or else it starts transforming on it's own so yeah Danny can't have his ghost form lay low even if there arent any ghosts attacking Amity.
